Stevie Nicks, Pretenders At Mohegan

I may be living in my own little bubble these days — and who could blame me? — but I think that the music of Fleetwood Mac is only growing in people's estimations. The recordings in question span styles and decades, from the late '60s blues rock to the early '80s soft pop. Some music ages poorly, some pop just keeps getting sweeter and better.

Stevie Nicks, of course, had a career before Fleetwood Mac. (She and Lindsay Buckingham had a duo that landed them the gig.) And she's had a notable solo career apart from the band, making big duets with people like Tom Petty and Don Henley. But she's known for her mega-hits with Fleetwood Mac, and when people think of that band, though it famously had many lineup changes throughout the years, they think of the Buckingham/Nicks iteration of it, which dominated the second half of the '70s. The band's famously knotted romantic entanglements add to the story.

Fleetwood Mac's "Mirage" got a deluxe re-issue earlier this year. It was the band's first record of the '80s, and a close listen reveals that the members were still in top form then, even if the hits weren't as indelible.

Nicks is partly known for her witchy stage persona, the lace and veils and whirling moves, but her singing is what's special, that mix of country twang, rock grit and sweet sensitivity. She's got plenty of proud confidence and bad-ass attitude but loads of emotional shading. She's a legend.

Stevie Nicks, and the Pretenders (rock originals as well), play Mohegan Sun Arena, Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville, Friday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. $69 to $89. 860-226-7711 and mohegansun.com.

Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde team up at Mohegan Sun

This alone is worth the price of admission: In concerts on Stevie Nicks' current tour that comes to Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, Nicks sings "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." No surprise there; it was a big hit. But here's the fun part: the person singing the Tom Petty part? Concert opening act Chrissie Hynde.
Well, technically, The Pretenders are the opening act, but The Pretenders have been pretty much Hynde for years.
In any case, this concert is a celebration of 1980s rock goddesses, with Nicks the ethereal enchantress and Hynde the leather-clad riot grrrrl.
Pegging them just to the 1980s, though, is a mistake. They both have continued to produce vital, oft-acclaimed music. Nicks, now 68, saw her latest album, "24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault," debut at #7 on the Billboard charts. Hynde, 65, likewise scored big with her new album, "Alone," produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Stevie Nicks, 7 p.m. Friday, Mohegan Sun Arena; with The Pretenders; $69, $89; 1-800-745-3000.

Stevie Nicks, Pretenders thrill Mohegan Sun Casino crowd (review)

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – More than four decades into her musical career, Stevie Nicks has a lot of stories to tell.

Fleetwood Mac's most recognizable voice stopped by the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday night, treating concert-goers to a career-spanning set – and career-spanning anecdotes – as part of the "24 Karat Gold" tour.

Known as the "Reigning Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" to fans, Nicks lived up to that title early on in her set, with a humble demeanor juxtaposed against a voice that – despite decades of touring – sounded nearly identical to recorded versions of songs such as openers "Gold and Braid" and "If Anyone Falls."

Nicks also wasn't afraid to hit some of Fleetwood Mac's most memorable tunes early on in her 19-song set, including a memorable performance of "Gypsy," complete with Lindsey Buckingham's memorable guitar melodies performed courtesy of longtime guitarist "Waddy Wachtel," who Nicks said she has known since 1971 and whose discography as a session guitarist spans from James Taylor to Iggy Pop.

Unfortunately, however, fans hoping for performances of "The Chain" or "Go Your Own Way" would be disappointed.

Instead, Nicks and her backing band took a fresh look at "deep cuts" from her first two solo efforts – 1981's, "Bella Donna" and 1983's "Wild Heart" for much of her set, alongside tracks off Nicks' 2014 effort, "24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault," which were accompanied with stories from Nicks about how each song was written and subsequently "lost" over the years.

Notably, according to Nicks, "Starshine" started off as a 1979 demo written and originally performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers between album cycles, which left the song unreleased until 2014.

In one of the night's most notable moments, Nicks invited Chrissie Hynde – who opened the show with seminal New Wave band the Pretenders – on stage for a performance of another Petty tune, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," with Hynde and Wachtel providing Nicks support during the song's choruses, originally sung by Petty.

With much of her set moving along at a slow pace, Nicks would save some of the night's best performances for last, starting with a brooding rendition of 2011's "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)," which Nicks said was inspired by the film "Twilight: New Moon" and inspired her to release her first solo album in nearly a decade. She also offered the one-two punch of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman" and an extended rendition of solo effort "Edge of Seventeen."

Nicks rounded out the show with a pair of encores that aptly paid respect to the two distinctive eras of her career: concert favorite "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac, which Nicks said she has performed at every concert since 1975, and "Leather and Lace" from 1981's "Bella Donna."

Hynde and the Pretenders opened the show with a lengthy set to an already-full arena that included back-to-back performances of hit songs "I'll Stand By You" and "Back on the Chain Gang" along with "Brass In Pocket."

Yeah, it's insane to think that Stevie would sing Go Your Own Way solo... and about as likely to happen as Lindsey singing Dreams at one of his solo concerts! Any FM fan who went to see Stevie would know not to expect to hear GYOW or even The Chain, even though I know she sang that song a few times on one tour. They might expect to hear Dreams or Landslide, but not these two. I think the reviewer either got confused or was being sarcastic.

Totally loved every second of the show at Mohegan. Tops on my list: smart and classy use of digital backdrops and lights to enhance the mood of each song, players closer to each other on stage created a family feel, gorgeous use of the colorful shawls and whatever that fluffy one was for Moonlight (maybe it sourced that seeming possession by the spirit of Bella), choice of songs both current and from way back...but I disagree about some reviewers list of "deep cuts" - to have Title Track Mashup of Bella Donna and Wildheart was worth every penny, and minute of driving! Rocked me in a new way to the core 👍🏻 Deep cuts would have been something like "I Sing for The Things" , "Alice", or "Just Like a Woman" in my humble opinion. Especially lovely was singing "Leather and Lace" with long timer Sharon❤️️ Crowd was more than rawkus with shouting, whistling, cheering, dancing, and clapping - but there were those baffling-to-me peeps who just like to sit and watch. At first I didn't get it about all the story telling she did of songs and people - until I realized what a gift for the basic non-crazy-all-knowing fans who get to walk away with an actual history lessson. So many were much younger than the songs - and I think it was brilliant of her to include stories of the vaulted songs for concert goers 10 to 80 !! My biggest wish is that this show gets onto a commercial DVD to keep that history part of the recorded performance !! I asked the videographer but he said as of now, the recording is just for her archives (sigh). I cannot be more happy for Stevie with this short little tour - everyone seemed so happy and truly enjoying themselves - oh, and even though we are missing Lori, congrats on her baby having that baby soon! I remember her missing from the 91 show when she was having that baby herself 👍🏻 I am once again humbled and changed from the inside💋 And so grateful that I get to show up for the most fabulous Literary Amazon that is still blessing us with her gift! I remain, THEE Eternal Fan.

Deep cuts would have been something like "I Sing for The Things" , "Alice", or "Just Like a Woman" in my humble opinion.

Deep cuts are songs like If You Were My Love, New Orleans, Belle Fleur, Starshine, Moonlight, Wild Heart & Bella Donna. Even Golden Braid.
