View Full Version : Stevie really needs to rethink not participating in the new Fleetwood Mac album

All it's going to prove is that creatively they don't need her and turn a lot of fans against her.

A. Behind the Mask proved that the band needed Lindsey.
B. Say You Will was definitely missing Christine but it was better than Behind the Mask.
C. The new album will be even better and it will be without Stevie and that will make it obvious that she is the weak link in Fleetwood Mac. Frankly, Christine McVie songs are the best examples of the Fleetwood Mac sound, not Stevie. Lindsey and Christine can still create magic. Maybe she knows she can't compete with what Lindsey and Christine did artistically.

Further proof - Tango in the Night. It's Fleetwood Mac's 2nd biggest selling album around the world. It sold 11 million copies. and only 3 million were inside the states. The weakest charting single, Seven Wonders, coming from Nicks. What did she really offer on that album - a great vocal on Seven Wonders, and a nice vocal on Little Lies. That's it. She didn't really participate in the album they had been working on for years.

As far as sales go and the tour, she won't make a difference if the music is good, which it will be. It will not sale a lot anyway. Tom Petty just had a number one album and it's still not Gold. Pathetic. They don't need the money, so small venues aren't going to matter that much to anyone but Mick, who is a money-grubbing whore. The album is for artistic purposes.

I want Stevie to make 24K Gold part 2, but I think if she were smart, she better participate in a big way with the new album. Not participating will only hurt her legacy. We all know that Lindsey and Christine have already created a masterpiece and Stevie is just going to make herself look bad. Even though it only may hurt the album, Stevie needs to be part of a masterpiece.

If it hurts the album, which it will, because she's not in it with her soul, I would seriously say to her: back off, we are making something beautiful here. Don't come ruin it.

At 68 years old, her legacy will be fine. She needs to do what she wants at this point. Not worry about what some fickle fans would think of her. I mean, I don't think there were tons of fans hating on Lindsey and Christine when they left. Disappointed at best. Did it ruin their legacy? No.

I wouldn't call fans fickle just because they want the classic lineup or nothing at all. I'd rather they all do solo albums if the 5 of them can't do this likely final album.

I saw them in Nashville in July. It was a good show(the light show was FANTASTIC). But, at the end of the day, I realized that I really only knew the hits, and wished I'd saved my money.

I guess that's the definition of "casual fan"...

Jamie

thank you for the voice of reason! that whole other thread about how FM album without Stevie would be just LB solo is a great example of fickle fans trying to muddy the clear points Jondalar expressed here!

basically -

if FM cares about their artistic legacy, they'll release 4/5 album and tour it.
if they care more about Stevie's individual legacy than collective FM legacy, they'll wait for her, cobble on a few of her songs like they did for Tango, and run in the ground points from SYW and EP that FM is not anymore a whole but just sum of individual parts. their overall artistic legacy will be cemented with yet another non-cohesive stitched together album.

I find it interesting that you point out what he said but statements like...it will make it obvious that she is the weak link in Fleetwood Mac. She will come in and ruin the album. We all know who the Queen of Fleetwood Mac is...seem to be just fine.

I personally believe that they will wait for her...out of total respect for her and out of recognition that this is what Fleetwood Mac has done in relation to her solo career for a few decades now. They may not get along well but I think they pretty much respect each other fully.

For the record, I don't think calling people fickle fans is a dagger or anything. I do think that calling people here "trifling bitches" as Sorcerer999 did is a problem and no more of that is going to be allowed.

But what I wanted to point out about your quote is the difference between what is said about a member of FM and what is said about other posters. So, what if someone calls Stevie a weak link? That's not being disrespectful to anyone here.

As far as we know, FM is not on this forum. You may get insulted if a member of Fleetwood Mac is criticized, but Fleetwood Mac is not you. The fact that someone attacked a member of Fleetwood Mac is not a reason to insult the person who did. You don't have to show respect for the people in FM. You have to show respect for the people who are posting here.

Now, when you have individual forums, for Stevie, Lindsey or Chris, I try to stop trolling in those forums. I think if you go into an individual band member's forum and intensely badmouth that individual member, you're probably trying to bait his/her fans rather than state an opinion. So, we police that kind of trolling more.

But in the Rumours forum, opinions about different band members are going to clash often. If you don't like having your favorite member trashed, don't come here. Lots of people have stopped coming and that's a great thing. Go to your favorite Facebook page where band members are loved and praised. When you're here, don't think that someone has to be nice to a band member out of respect to you. People should be nice to YOU out of respect to you. That's what required.

John McVie can sing all of Stevie's parts just as good if not better than she can. Imagine how beautiful a rendition of landslide with Lindsey on guitar and John singing would be. And songs like Silver Springs with John up front at Stevie's mic and staring at Lindsey as he sings. It has the potential to be really good.

and also completely missing the point. Don't Stop was the only Chris song FM did in her absence, and only because that song has completely transcended way beyond Fleetwood Mac. my teenage son asked me after seeing FM live in 2013 why did they chose to cover that song - that's how much in a collective fabric and dissociated from the band that song is. that was the only song he knew (other than GYOW which was on Guitar Hero or one of those games).

however huge Dixie Chicks and others who covered it made Landslide, it did not reach the status of Don't Stop.

there's no need to do any Stevie songs during FM 4/5 gigs, she had many fewer hits than Chris, and they still did only Don't Stop.

you are building a very nice argument for why they should not wait for her - after decades of putting up with it now they are getting to be so old that the time is to break off this bad habit of letting her putting FM on back burner to the point of scarcely having any albums out. if they want their legacy to be artistic in their last years and not just a touring oldie cash machine, it's time to actually do something artistic.

that said, you are probably right and they will wait for her... out of procrastination or misplaced greed probably.

The last thing Stevie wants is for them to release an album and do a tour without her. What if they find being a quartet is more creatively rewarding, is more enjoyable, and is still viable enough to justify doing without her? Maybe going "medium machine," as Lindsey might say, might prove to be more enticing as a long term option. Maybe they would take a "life's too short" attitude regarding Stevie and doing another massive cash-grab tour. I think that's unlikely, but Stevie choosing to be absent potentially opens up Pandora's box.

Family Man was the 5th single released nearly a year after the album had been. Lindsey's Big Love and Chris's Little Lies which bookended Seven Wonders were both top 5 hits.In that context Seven Wonders' position was a poor showing although IMHO the song is very good.

They did a big tour on it, too. BTM... I think it sold close to 1million. About same as SYW..

stop spitting on SYW! that album came out after napster, etc etc... sales at that time cannot compare to previous decades, same as sales now cannot compare to early 2000s.

while i agree that SYW was disjointed and 2 solo albums slapped together, most of Lindsey's songs on it are so fantastic that it overrides non-cohesiveness as an album.

that said, if original Gift of Screws came out instead of plucking those songs for FM, that album would be in a completely different stratosphere from SYW. it's too bad, but at least we have a 2001 bootleg version as a consolation.

Another arguement for Stevie participating in the new Fleetwood Mac album is age.

Stevie keeps bragging that woman in her family live to be 90 years old. However how many women in her family were cocaine addicts for 15 years. That had to of hurt her heart muscles. She would be very lucky to live to be 75. And how many women in her family lived the rock 'n' roll lifestyle? The human papilloma virus causes cancer and I wonder how many versions of that are floating around in her body mutating. The older she gets the weaker her immune system will be and she won't be able to fight off stuff like that. Cancer is a huge threat to her.

timing of her participation will barely change though, she's already too late:

if Stevie participates in that album that's almost finished, it will extend the timeline so it will be finished and released after their 2017/18 tour. which will be the same timeline for them to start another album with Stevie.

but they can put this one out in 2017 if Stevie doesn't rejoin in the last minute, extends their timelines, and deprives us of any opportunity to see these new songs live, ever.

At 68 years old, her legacy will be fine. She needs to do what she wants at this point. Not worry about what some fickle fans would think of her. I mean, I don't think there were tons of fans hating on Lindsey and Christine when they left. Disappointed at best. Did it ruin their legacy? No.

Jamie

I agree. You got a point there Jamie. Its her life.I'm not going to dictate in what she should do at this stage of her life.Again I could care less if she records with FM or not.I'm not going to bash the crap out of her if she doesn't .At this point .This album topic is sounding like a broken record."Pun Intended". The same goes with the rest of the Mac.Let them do what they want. The one thing that I'm upset with the Mac including Stevie is give up the GREED factor and charge normal or below tix prices or for free .Thats the only thing that will make me stop seeing them.My friend went to see Foreigner play for free at the local fair last Saturday.

Michele

There are many boards with policies such as this, and I've never quite completely gotten it. While I understand the general intent and purpose, there's a slight sentiment of "You have to be nice to the people who post because they are regular joes; you don't have to be nice to celebrities because their lives are better than ours so they have to pay." Cheap shots at various band members are so tedious and boring ("Stevie sounds like a goat"....OMG I never heard that one before ); I get tired of wading through posts like that to find a thoughtful critique or insightful opinion (which every now and then will come from the very same poster). I'm not bothered in the least by conflicting opinions or honest criticisms. But it's pretty easy to discern between stuff like that vs. name-calling, rude remarks, and insults (which I think are baiting no matter what forum they are in). I always try to make sure my comments are adding value to the conversations and appreciate it when others do the same. Why can't we just be respectful of everyone? Because as you say, it's only as far as we know that FM is not on this forum. If they were, we would have to be respectful to them, but they wouldn't necessarily reveal themselves. I mean, after all these years, you never found out that I'm Billy Burnette. :D

It has nothing to do with their lives. It has to do with the fact that they ARE NOT HERE. No one says you have to be nice to regular joes either. If you want to start slagging the Barista at the local coffee shop that's fine. Just as long as he's not posting here.

I think they have waited...and waited...and waited...
and now I think they are starting to lose all respect for her. Patience is wearing thin, to snapping point.

In my opinion, this is the belief of the people on this board, not the band members. I think that the members of FM expected this to happen after the last few years of constant touring and knowing that Stevie had put out a solo record in the meantime. I don't think they have lost any respect for her or are anywhere near snapping. If they decide to make an album without her, it will be some kind of experiment and we will see how it goes.

While I definitely agree that Christine and likely John are not irritated, Mick definitely is. I also suspect after nearly a decade of playing the press game and bending and contorting for Stevie, Lindsey is probably inwardly upset, too.

Before I have someone jump on me for that comment, I'll lay out the evidence. Lindsey has immensely softened his sonic style with his most recent releases, most notably with the EP and soundtrack songs. He's worked with outside producers, and collaborated with popular musicians... two things he hasn't done in decades. He has also greatly softened his tone with Stevie in the press, and remains steadfastly complimentary and understanding of her. He's pulled out every trick he can muster to make Stevie happy, yet apparently none of it is enough. He can't be happy, no matter how Zen he appears these days.

Getting back to Christine, I doubt she's upset... but I get the distinct impression she's itching to make up for lost time. She's come out of her nearly 2 decade long abdication eager to record. How do we know this? She's so intent she's even openly speaking about the band moving forward without Stevie, if necessary. Christine is a fairly understated woman, so for her to make such a bold proclamation, it means she stands fully committed to recording, and soon. I also suspect that she wouldn't make this announcement to the press if others in the band didn't share her feelings, too.

It's actually pretty astonishing that public opinion on the Ledge has shifted against Stevie so drastically. Not too many years ago the Ledge was derided as nothing more than a lair for obsessed and psychotic Stevie fanatics who eviscerated anyone who dared discuss anyone other than Stevie and her greatness. The sea-change that has happened here is no one's fault but Stevie's. She's managed to turn her most ardent, lifelong fans against her- no small feat!

We do agree on one thing, though. I feel that referring to her as a goat is just petty. Calling her out for her own diva behavior? Totally fair game.

I agree. The turnaround here, regarding Stevie, has been very surprising. Your assessment of "how it used to be" here is spot on. And those of us that are pretty harsh critics of her, aren't new here! But there is a new wave of people who don't seem to worship her anymore. At least not like they used to(of course there will always be "that group", but it just seems far smaller now).

I'm afraid I have to admit I am one of those changed. I was pulled into the Mac machine in '97 because of Stevie. I was bewitched by her, under her spell completely. When I first saw the band live in '04, I screamed nothing but "STEVIE!!!" for the first 20 minutes starting when she walked out on stage. I literally lost my mind. Saw her live in '05 as well because I simply couldn't get enough of her. But lately, that feeling has dwindled drastically and it's because of this behavior. Surely the woman has the right to do what she wants and has earned it but the games must end. It's tiresome and it's downright ridiculous for grown adults to still be playing this game at their age.

Decide what you want to do and stick to it. If the solo thing is what you want, then please by all means, leave the band.

Hideous, horrible, tacky, rude, and sexist thing to say. How many times have the boys in the band stuck their "tusks" into God knows what?
Terribly misogynistic post.
How do you know ANYTHING about her health?

Misogynistic? Really... false outrage! Sometimes the truth hurts. She has been horrible to her body but she seems to have forgotten that.

She'll be on the new album. I promise.
This is how they play up the speculation with the media.
Although I wouldn't mind a Buckingham-McVie project at all. They saved Tango In The Night and wrote the strongest songs for Mirage.
Yes on TITN, no on "Mirage." Stevie had the best songs on "Mirage" and saved that album.

Absolutely ..Stevie was still at the top of her game for the Mirage sessions in 1981. TITN on the other hand.. her only decent song was from an outside writer.

She mentions it constantly.
And they were ALL horrible to their bodies.
To extrapolate your logic, I assume you think John "deserved" his cancer because of the horrible treatment he inflicted on his body??
I don't mind the goat, ego-maniac, diva, self-absorbed, insults hurled at her.
You just brought it all DEEP down into the gutter by trying to link her past indescretions to her current health, and then tying it to a reason she needs to fall inline and record a record.
It seems highly judgemental

No I'm saying that the smart thing for her to do is too record the new album because there is no way in hell she is living to see 90. Personally I would love 24k gold part 2 but I don't think she realizes the new Fleetwood Mac record is her last chance to record with them.

don't think so. Mac album has been held up just because they were waiting for her to join, since 2009. she can join at any point, they have tons of new material, and if she doesn't join now, they can release one or 2 albums in fast succession, without her. and if she decided to join them in the creative process, they can release another album with all 5, whenever she's ready.

If you're going to throw insults around, at least find a new word.

Well, there is another word for it, actually. But "goat bleater" is often used in it's place: the word is "tremolo."

http://bohemianvocalstudio.com/vibrato-vs-tremolo

"What is vibrato – and how does it differ to tremolo? For starters, Vibrato is the natural state of your vocal chords – if you took consonant sounds and words out of the mix, your resonant voice would gravitate towards vibrato after a few seconds of holding the tone." . . .

"Whereas tremolo is actually shifting the pitch itself up and down like doing hammer-ons and pull-offs on an electric guitar – it’s tiring, wears your vocal chords and sounds a little bit like a goat ‘bleating’.

David Coverdale had a great natural vibrato while singing for Deep Purple in the 70’s, along with Paul Rodgers in Bad Company/Free, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles – whereas Stevie Nicks (who’s voice I absolutely love, by the way!) and Mick Jagger (Ditto) actually use Tremolo for the most part because of their throat position, delivery and chord closure."

I understand a lot of the frustration around Stevie's behavior as of late. I myself am annoyed beyond belief with her. But I've never understood the value in calling her names or mocking her weight, etc.

And personally, if we're going to go with the goat angle, that's one of my favorite animals, so...

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE if the four of them released as much material as they possibly could.

I'm still crossing my fingers that this album doesn't get shelved again before the start of the next tour.

Jondalar, this is gravely ignorant and malicious, HPV it's a very serious problem and it affects women and men alike, even if the latters in smaller number. You shouldn't talk abut this topic lightly in any way, more so since there could be people here on this board that have suffered from it and they have risked their life.
Also I'd like to point out that the infection usually happens during the 20-35 years old time window and it's unlikely for a woman to develop an illness because of it at a much later age.

Whilst it's difficult to agree with the exact details of Jondalar's post, I do have sympathy with his general premise. That's to say, Stevie has lived a rock n roll lifestyle and that is bound to take it out of her body. Though Stevie may have other female family members that have lived to a good age that doesn't automatically mean Stevie will follow suit. Those other female family members probably haven't abused their body repeatedly over a long period of time as Stevie has.
*Substance abuse- Klonopin, cocaine, alcohol, cigs, pot + whatever else
*Travel- regularly moving between time zones and expecting the body to constantly adjust
*Touring- those concerts look pretty draining
*Recording- as with travel, pushing the body to extremes in terms of an irregular body clock

Whilst I hope Stevie (and the rest of the band) do indeed live to a good age, I'd say their life expectancy probably is slightly lower than if they'd lived a more regular lifestyle. Of course, that shouldn't be a factor in terms of how a person chooses to use the remaining years of their life; she might say to herself- 'I haven't got too much longer left, I'd really like to maximise Stevie-time instead of devoting time to the band'. which is absolutely fine provided she were straight with the band.

Maybe it's only my way of thinking but I believe all these things aren't any of our business.
However I'd say that they have already reached a considerable age for people who have lived a very stressing life, and in pretty much good health.
It still remains the fact that dragging serious illnesses on to justify the topic is incredibly insensitive for who is on this board.

anyone ( an adult ) using the internet ... anonymously , must risk / understand they are going encounter something they don't agree with , people who don't share their likes and beliefs and should be prepared to accept it ,move on or leave ,if is so upsetting to their delicate sensibilities , then the internet should be avoided or stick to benign places like Disney , one million moms and ellen.

This is hilarious- people who have no clue about Stevie's life and health are sitting here... discussing Stevie's life and health. Only on the internet. Heck, I may as well jump in!

Two things: first, Stevie looked really good on her last three tv appearances. Second, she is very, very rich and has presumably gotten good health care and advice since she quit cocaine and Klonopin... almost 25 years ago. A lot of people her age have had hip replacement or arthritis or something else that limits or restricts physical a activity, but she's on stage performing- wow!

We all have a life expectancy body clock that is ticking along all the time. Everything we do that's unhealthy speeds that clock on a bit. You can have access to the best health care in the world. It doesn't mean sh!t. And yes, stuff you do in your younger years will impact later in life.

As I said,I hope Stevie lives to a good age. But just because she had family members that lived to a good age, it doesn't man she will too.

God how heavy, who's the real nun here now?
It's never too late to prolongue the life that remains to live changing your lifestyle to a healtier one. Stevie is clean since the mid-90s and eats more carrots than we ever did in our whole life, and she exercises when she can. And alternates periods of touring with periods of resting or during other kind of work, even if here most don't seem to appreciate it. She's not dying tomorrow. Actually she's living healtier than me.

Christine confirmed that this tour would definitely be happening in a recent interview with Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2. She didn't mention if all five members would be taking part or not.

from both Stevie and Christine's interviews, the answer is yes, and Christine said all 5 signed on the dotted line.

in addition, Christine also mentioned that 4 of them might tour earlier in 2017, with the songs from the new album they are finishing this year.
