View Full Version : timing is right to put out 4/5 FM album and tour it!

after being completely ecstatic for a day, i'm getting worried they will succumb to their waiting-on-stevie habit and not go ahead with finishing their album and touring it before the massive FM tour coming up at the end of 2017/18.

i'm worried SN's tour will bomb, she will decide to contribute after all, which will ruin all these fantastic plans of an album and 4/5 tour before the end of 2017. instead they'll squander all next year working on her songs when she finally decides to rejoin, and we will not see anything from FM before their next GH world tour.

mark my words. this seems to be the pattern. :distress:

Adding the original Christine quote from RS interview talking about the album and the tour, for some ccntext -

RS: What is the future of the band at this point?
CM: Well, we cut seven songs in the studio already for the start of a brand-new studio album. Which we did probably nearer two years ago. We shelved that temporarily and then went on the road and did the tour. And now, actually, I think we're going back in in October to try to finish it off. Stevie hasn't participated yet, but hope springs eternal. She's going on a solo tour at the moment. But Lindsey and I, we have plenty of songs. There are tons more in the bag that we have yet to record. And they're fantastic. So we're going to carry on and try to finish the record. And then maybe if Stevie doesn't want to be part of that then we can go out and just do some smaller concerts.
RS: You would consider doing some shows with just you, Lindsey, Mick and John [McVie]?
CM: As a four-piece, yeah. With a view of doing a huge world tour after that, with Stevie.
RS: And would you expect that we'll see this new album in 2017?
CM: One would hope so, yeah. That's the plan. And I can't wait for it to be finished. It'll be great. And then we'll hopefully do this world tour with Stevie. And after that, who knows? But we're all still alive, how about that? So that's a start.

While I don't think her tour with the Pretenders will bomb, I DO think you're right that she will go into the studio with them after the holidays and that there WILL indeed be a final Mac album with the five and that there WILL NOT be an album or tour with just the four of them.

Despite what Chris or Mick has said in the press, I just don't believe Warners would get behind them and finance/promote an album without Miss Nicks. Just my two cents.

i'm confused why people keep bringing up Warners or any label. they can self-release, they've done that before. Warners is not a good label for them anymore anyway.

and they just need to have a promoter for a tour, not the label. and you know that both Mick and Lindsey - and i'm convinced Christine and John too - can tour relatively cheap, they do it all the time. they would make tons of money for promoters if they tour in this never-before-seen formation selling out smaller venues for higher prices. others do it all the time and find promoters. much smaller draws than FM, namely MFBB and LB solo completely alone, have no problem getting gigs so makes absolutely no sense FM would not.

I'm having this worry, too. In her recent radio interview, Christine has said the band has already signed on the dotted lines for the tour dates. So, if Stevie wants in in the album at the 11th hour, and the band welcomes her, they'll have to shelve the new album yet again, tour for two more years, THEN release it.

yup.

there's no downside for them in releasing and touring that 4/5 FM album. they are getting their massive money on the tour following it either way.

but somehow, they keep the door open for her to come back at 11th hour and mess up their plans.

I think they should sign with Matador. With "Tusk" being as popular as it is with the indie rock crowd, I think there would be a curiosity factor with Fleetwood Mac on one of the largest indie labels around. Of course, Nonsuch would also be a great indie label option, since it's an autonomous subsidiary of WB.

Ok Elle, I'm still a lityle high from the gas at the dentist earlier, but why are you worried?? You were so happy at this news!
I predict Stevie would be grateful if they went on without her for an album. It would free her up without guilt. I also think her tour will do moderately well, so no need to run back to them.
Relax.

When is my mouth going to not feel like a f%$@ing catcher's mit??!!

Lindsey and/or Christine should release solo albums if their songs are ready. Don't call it a FM album if Stevie is not involved. She's the most famous member and you guys must deal with that. At this point an album/tour with 4 of them (especially without Stevie) would bomb.

i don't know i guess it just looks too good to be true? they never had the balls in the past it seems, and always pulled back. maybe they finally will now, it would be so amazing, different and just plain interesting!

and like you said - win-win for everyone involved.

nobody is arguing the most famous or most commercial point. we are not interested in that. and band's having their money coming to them from the upcoming world tour with all 5, so they don't seem interested in that anymore either - they can have their cake and eat it too!

the band made album that is more FM album than what they released as FM in the last 15 years should not be taken apart and release as 2 solo albums, when the music is not solo. makes no sense whatsoever.

Sure it does. A Christine solo album with Lindsey on backing vocals on a few tracks, and vice versa. Sorry, at this point don't shame the Fleetwood Mac brand with a partial lineup. I don't care what you think, that's my opinion and let's see if your 4 member band gets off the ground.

I'd rather not have her nasal voice on a FMac record. Great way to go out. I would love an artistic album without her drudging up old songs diminishing the work that LB and CM have done.

plus it would be cobbled and stitched together like SYW and EP were, instead of a nice cohesive sounding album that LB and CM seem to have now with all their co-writes.

Ok, fair enough.

She's been doing demos from the vaults. While Christine and Lindsey have been writing fresh music. They are actually recording together as a band. I don't want her coming in with her 3 songs and saying here, turn them into Fleetwood Mac. vs.. actually being in the studio and recording, singing, and writing with the other two. LIke an actually band.

i think reading thread after combating thread of people belittling Fleetwood Mac as a brand if SN is not a part of the formation is throwing us off. it may be just a really loud minority of fans disagreeing and requiring FM to not ever do anything without Stevie, in any circumstances.

completely illogical yet for some reason some *fickle* fans insist on it!

this is interesting. she does exhibit negative energy towards FM a lot! this is really visible in some of her solo interviews (i think it was IYD screening or something?), she rolls her eyes when mentioning the band and portrays Fleetwood Mac as this stone around her neck dragging her down, that she has to go back to although she really doesn't want to (back one the chain gang? ;) ). people say she's generally in much better mood and engaged at her solo gigs than at FM where half of the time she looks like she is just going through the motions and doesn't want to be there.

so it does look like it will be a win-win for both the band and for Stevie if she is not on this upcoming album.

Who's to say the songs Lindsey and Christine are crafting are great? Has anyone heard them? Also, beginning with Tusk , EVERY Fleetwood Mac album has been 3 solo records smashed together. Once Rumours made them all financially secure, they drifted into their own orbits, and re-united to record commercial music every few years. Each writer pursuing the sound they wanted. Nothing on Tusk (except maybe Think About Me) sounds anything like a full-band song.

Elle, I think SN and LB BOTH have ego issues, don't you think?

Jamie

that's a really interesting question, Jamie. i'll try to unpack some of it, and i'm sure you and others can probably add some complementary thoughts.

i think that LB is, however unbelievable that may sound for a person with his level of [recognized] talent and success, in fact insecure. i'm not really sure that examples people bring up as his ego are legit. for example, people keep claiming how he does long guitar solos live, to show off. yet for a recognized great guitarist, he barely does any solos. maybe 1 and 3/4 per show. you go to any rock concert, and you will hear multiple solos from multiple guitarists and other instrumentalists per concert. compared to most other bands, and especially other known guitarists, LB barely does a guitar solo live.

as far as being a perfectionist in the studio and thinking he is right, that may show a level of intolerance or incapability to be open to discussions, but i don't think he insists on his way in the studio because of some ego trip or power play; he just thinks his way is right. i suspect Christine may be the only one (and probably in recent decades Johnny Mac) who were able to make him go their way in the FM context - but i might be completely wrong. and in the context of other bands, LB certainly fills in whatever kind music they do anyway, and adds a bit of his unique twist. NIN vs EOTS vs Delta Rae music is completely incomparable, yet he found ways to fit into what they were doing (and you can be happy or unhappy with that, LB fans certainly have the whole spectrum of very extreme views on that EOTS Tango-era sounding song!).

in relation to one another though SN and LB still have a weird and somewhat childish level of competitiveness.

as you know i don't know that much about Stevie. one thing that does strike me from some of her statements throughout the years, starting from "i wanna be a star!" is that - well - that was her main purpose then, and some of her behavior and statements now signal she is still thinking that way. she is the person who wants to be upfront in the limelight, known and praised. but in relations to Lindsey, she definitely seems to have some unresolved power struggle issues. maybe not just in relation to him, but also Christine, or others, otherwise she would not insist David Stewart has "no ego" - which i thought was a crappy thing to say and somehow i don't think Dave Stewart liked it that much.

elle

he cant even sing anymore. He screeches. Just my opinion.

i'm guessing you have never seen a Lindsey solo show.

we used to have huge discussions over on Lindsey-board whether fans like better his young or his older voice. in his younger days he used to have a range, but i strongly dislike most high male voices and didn't like his either.

on the other hand, on his solo tours as well as on new tunes that are composed for his current range (think Sad Angel live!), his voice is strong and unlike when he was young, i do like his deeper voice.

with FM live, i think he/they adjust the key of songs so that all members can more-less sing it, and so LB having the guitarist thing to fall onto, probably goes with whatever range is appropriate for other vocalists even if he can't really hit the notes and has to yell them.

that's a really interesting question, Jamie. i'll try to unpack some of it, and i'm sure you and others can probably add some complementary thoughts.

i think that LB is, however unbelievable that may sound for a person with his level of [recognized] talent and success, in fact insecure. i'm not really sure that examples people bring up as his ego are legit. for example, people keep claiming how he does long guitar solos live, to show off. yet for a recognized great guitarist, he barely does any solos. maybe 1 and 3/4 per show. you go to any rock concert, and you will hear multiple solos from multiple guitarists and other instrumentalists per concert. compared to most other bands, and especially other known guitarists, LB barely does a guitar solo live.

as far as being a perfectionist in the studio and thinking he is right, that may show a level of intolerance or incapability to be open to discussions, but i don't think he insists on his way in the studio because of some ego trip or power play; he just thinks his way is right. i suspect Christine may be the only one (and probably in recent decades Johnny Mac) who were able to make him go their way in the FM context - but i might be completely wrong. and in the context of other bands, LB certainly fills in whatever kind music they do anyway, and adds a bit of his unique twist.

When you say "she is the person who wants to be upfront in the limelight, known and praised" I have to disagree, at least in the last 20 or so years when shes been touring with Fleetwood Mac. As I've said before, Stevie is definitely more subdued during Fleetwood Mac shows, and she is very aware that she is part of a "team". She has said this, and it shows. I can't speak for how she might have acted in shows during the seventies and eighties, as I was not old enough to have attended those shows. I do remember hearing a story about her doing something on stage back then that Lindsay was irritated with and he showed it in so many ways. And that since then, she has subdued her actions on stage when she performs with Fleetwood Mac. Not sure if that's true, but that's what I remember reading somewhere.
Bottom line, I believe both of them are egotistical. It just seemed that you were kind of alluding in your post that it was just one person in the band that was egotistical. (Stevie)

Oh and as far has her saying when she was young that she "wanted to be a star", I take that as kind of tongue-in-cheek thing. Kind of like when you hear a lot of rockstar guys say, "yeah when I was young I wanted to become a rockstar because they get all the chicks!"

I vote for a Stevie and Christine tour. Mick and John can come along also but I would prefer Lindsey get out. His ego is too big to fit in the room, the show has to be all about him or he throws a tantrum, and he cant even sing anymore. He screeches. Just my opinion. I think Stevie and Christine would bring in some pretty huge crowds also. Hmmmm....one can dream.

Lol I think you are confused about which fm members have grown up vs which ones never passed the stage of tantrum throwing and ego / power trips. :).

just giving the flow of quotes.

i don't really know whether or not Lindsey is egotistical. maybe he is. you are saying he is. can you give me some examples?

i do think Stevie very much likes to be in the limelight and she doesn't hide that. nothing wrong with that, she's an entertainer and that makes sense.

I guess you could argue that she's in the limelight when she singing her songs, and she kind of has to be. Otherwise she's kind of subdued when she tours with them, as compared to her solo shows. Doesn't smile as much, doesn't move around as much, etc.
As far as an example of Lindsey being egotistical, I really don't want to bring up something that's been rehashed over and over again on threads from the past. And by the way, I don't think being egotistical is necessarily a bad thing, although it can probably get in the way of production sometimes, which I think is just one of Stevie and Lindsey's issues with each other.
You know I've said before that Lindsey is a nice guy ( or at least he was to me). So no hard feelings.

not moving around as much might be due to any number of factors (i could never move in those high high platform heels!), but i think you might be referring to instances where she seemed disengaged and disinterested. i think that particularly happened on 2009 tour, and the reviews were brutal to her.

at some of his 2012 m&gs, when they were preparing 2013 FM tour, Lindsey was actually saying how much he didn't like she got all those bad reviews, and that he will try to make sure that doesn't happen on the upcoming tour.

of course, you wouldn't want him to hold back all that energy he brings to their live show!

I'm comparing her not moving around and not smiling as much to her solo shows, where she does much more of that (as she should - she's the only singer on stage).

you know what, i bet that we'd have lots of fun! while i get in huge disagreements with some of the SN fans here, once we meet in person we usually have a great time!

ah makes sense, and i definitely don't have any solo frame of reference, as you know. her solo shows may be shorter than Mac shows too making it easier to keep the energy up? from everything i read it seems pretty clear that she enjoys solo shows much better than Mac shows, whatever the reason might be.

during Mac shows one of the band members always takes her by the hand and escorts her when they are entering or existing the stage (usually in the dark) - either Lindsey, or Christine, or Mick, at various points of the show. i just assumed that's because of her shoes and the worry about her tripping over all the wires lying on the stage floor.

When I saw the 3 shows in LA. Stevie had amazing stage energy and look liked she was having a blast. I give her a lot of credit for being on pitch most of the night, too. She has shortened her range, but her energy was amazing.

I was very impressed. Christine was very pitchy the first night. I actually rolled my eyes at the Queen.. but she was so much better night 2 and 3. I guess 16 years does take away from that muscle.

sounds like the Today Show performance. Stevie was really strong and on pitch, while unfortunately Christine was not which was too bad considering the exposure they were getting performing on the show.

you are thinking SYW tour. in 2014, it was this time of the year, Oct 9 i believe. i was there, all night in line waiting, i would know if it was freezing or foggy :p. all night spending on the street was a little cold for fans waiting, sure. and it was still dark out when the band came out for soundcheck, but not nearly as cold as in the middle of the night. by the time they were recording the show it was daylight and pretty normal weather for that time of the year in NYC.

i have videos of soundcheck on my youtube channel btw.

So that's a start.

to put us back on track - Christine quotes above gave us the hope that we will actually see a release of FM new music, and possibly even a small venue tour to showcase that new music.

as some here have already noted, this seems to be a win-win for all various band members and all various fans (and yet inexplicably there are some fans who keep trying to drag this joy down into the mud! ):

FM members who are eager to release new music get to do that and showcase it live
SN gets to have her solo time
they all get together at the end of 2017 for one final FM tour
SN fans get new solo tour they crave, and i think i've seen all over fb some new re-releases they've been craving too, so they must be ecstatic
FM fans, and especially CM and LB fans, get new cohesive album we've been waiting for
FM fans, and especially CM and LB fans, get to see them live in intimate venues performing new songs
FM 5 fans get to see all 5 one last time at the massive world tour

if all this materializes it would be pretty spectacular!

It was a cold autumn day, quite drizzly. You remember this correctly.

Christine was most notably out of pitch, but all three of them sounded bad. The only song from that micro-set that sounded good was The Chain.

EDIT: of course, John and i just dug out a screencap saying it was 45F. it was definitely not summer anymore! but compared to about 33 overnight (i was freezing and had to borrow a jacket from FMN&R!), we were all warm by 9am when the band performed televised parts.

So, we're nearly a week into October. Mick's tour is over. I wonder if the Mac 4 have gotten together yet. I wonder if they will be using The Village like they did last year (or was it the year before?) or perhaps they'll convene at Lindsey's house. Grrrrr, I'm excited but guessing about what they are doing is painful.

There's hope yet....
Just read that The Stones are issuing a studio Album in December....

Admitted its Blues covers, not new stuff..
But according to Ronnie Wood, they recorded 11 songs in 2 days!!!!

Mick is 73, Keith is 72 and Charlie is 75.
So our band are babies.
Lets hope they can get all get in the studio and turn something round, pretty quick.

exactly about Stones! how many albums did they released since 2013 - both new and old music?

since 4 of them are going in the studio in October to finish the album, i don't see "all" happening, but with the current Fleetwood Mac2 Buck formation it looks like they plan to finish the album by Christmas!

Mick Fleetwood Says He Hopes Fleetwood Mac Finishes a New Album "Before We Hang It Up"

Before Fleetwood Mac launched its 2014-2015 world tour, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood worked on some new tracks that have yet to see the light of day. Fleetwood says that "before we hang it up," he hopes the band will complete those recordings and release a new studio album, while admitting that he isn't sure if that will happen.

"We have what we would call a large stash of great music. I'm not quite sure what we're heading to do with it," he tells ABC Radio. "I hope that we are able to [put an album together]. It's just getting everyone on the same page to finish off the work that we've been doing."

Mick admits that one Fleetwood Mac member who currently isn't on the same page is Stevie Nicks, who will be launching a new North American solo tour on October 25.

"She's busy doing her own stuff," he points out. "And in this point in life, we've all dedicated so much time to Fleetwood Mac, you go, 'Hey, it'd be great if we could, but if not, don't worry about it.'"

Fleetwood tells ABC Radio that even if Nicks chooses not to lend her talents to the project, he hopes the music that's already been recorded will be released in some form.

"I think there's some thought that some of that lovely music would come out as a sort of duet album, maybe…from Christine and Lindsey," Mick poses. "And if not, it will stay in a room, waiting for the day that maybe it would make sense that all of us can contribute to that being a Fleetwood Mac album."

He adds, "Before we hang it up in the next few years, I truly hope there's another lovely album that will come out."

I actually think most everything Lindsey has released in the 21st century has been produced in a fairly spare way. Say You Will definitely had some muddy moments, but his 21st century solo albums have certainly had a very clean, distilled, metallic sheen to them. It is kind of odd how much time he spends in the studio to achieve that, though.

I think Stevie's 24k Gold album showcases that there are huge benefits and giant detriments to recording quickly, though. Some songs like Belle Fleur came out just kicking total @ss, while others such as Lady definitely needed more time in the oven.

Whatever happens, I just don't hold out hope for a great album if Stevie is involved. It will end up being this giant, cautious, middle of the road compromise hammered out by their lawyers and managers.
