View Full Version : A FM Album without Stevie is just a Lindsey solo album

And we know how well solo a Lindsey Buckingham album sells. And a tour without Stevie would be like a lounge show, which is ironic considering Lindsey described Christine's and Stevie's solo tours as a lounge act.
Wonder if they would still use Stevie's back up singers? Think they'd move Christine to the center of the stage? Or would she still stay in the back left corner?
To replace Stevie's songs, I wonder if Lindsey will perform more 12 minute solos on songs like Not That Funny, I'm So Afraid, and Come? Maybe more of his solo work like Big Love, Go Insane, the Ledge, or Walk a Thin Line?

Funniest thing I've read all day!
Even without a new album, they wouldn't be hurting for material. They could still do a GH tour, only it would be better because the primary hit writer for Fleetwood Mac would be there.

I totally agree with you. I think Lindsey would fully take over and it would be way too many long guitar solos and screaming from him. I love Christine though so she may be able to temper all of that...who knows? I don't think Christine wants to be front and center so it would be the Lindsey show. Just not my cup of tea.

Oh it would definitely be a lounge act, with Lindsey's "Oz, the great and powerful" head showing on the backdrop the entire time!

You all make it sound like Mick, John, and Christine didn't have a band until Stevie and Lindsey joined. They did, and it was called Fleetwood Mac. And, Christine even did a solo tour (albeit reluctantly). This tour will be every bit a Fleetwood Mac tour.

weirdly, looks like some of the Stevie fans needed a venting thread to for whatever reason spit on non-SN band members. i was expecting SN fans would be happy that FM 4 are leaving SN alone to do whatever she wants to do, and they have her all to themselves.
EDIT: this thread title is unbelievably insulting to FM's biggest hitmaker. and to the whole band.

I am a fan of her solo music (not the image )
I am glad she is doing her thing but I would prefer a new Mac record ...I am now Thrilled at a chance to have a record with just the 4 of them she is not Fleetwood Mac ,John and Mick are the rest are just hired player who can and have come and gone . I really hope they release the music they have been working on as i said they are creative musician she has settled on being a rock star .

Seriously though, it's ok for the Stevie haters to say anything and everything about her, call her names and make fun of her voice, but let her fans jump in and we are either young and dumb (NO, I'm 47 and have loved her since Bella Donna) or just being mean about the other four. Boo Hoo!! I can admit that Stevie has a huge ego, but your boy Lindsey......his is just as big or bigger. He thinks he's smarter, more talented and that he has the perfect little life with his perfect little wife and their horses, kids and dogs and he can do a perfect job making a perfect record as long as everyone else bends to his will and lets him make it HIS way. Puleeezze!! No wonder she doesn't want to record with them! Listen, it's like Trump and Clinton! We are not going to agree, EVER! If you don't want Stevie's fans defending her, then QUIT bashing her.

The problem with this is that you're making this Stevie vs. Lindsey, which falls on deaf ears for those of us who are fans of the band (i.e. Christine, Mick, and John). I don't care how mean Lindsey was during the recording of SYW, or any other album for that matter, I don't care whether or not Stevie participates, I don't especially care if Lindsey participates . . . I don't care how it happens, just so long as I get more music from the Fleetwood-McVie-McVie rhythm section.

This thread makes no sense. On several levels.
First off, Christine's there, so it can't be just a Lindsey solo album. The EP (with Stevie nominally present) is actually a Lindsey solo project plus Mick and John.
Second, Even if Lindsey were the only front person left in the band, what are the remaining members supposed to do--wait and beg a stubborn, narcissistic, unwilling, unhappy artist who refuses to record with them?
Fail.

What doesn't make sense? A FM album without Stevie will sell the same as a Lindsey solo album.
Lindsey will replace Stevie songs with longer solos.
Christine will remain in the left hand corner behind her keyboards.
Also, interviews and tv appearances will be sparse, if not non-existent.

A Fleetwood Mac album without Stevie would not be a Lindsey solo album in any sense. It would have an even mix of Lindsey and Christine songs, except for the fact that some of their songs are co-written, making this much more of a BAND album than Fleetwood Mac has put out in a very long time. It would be much more of a cooperative venture than 'Say You Will' was, which to me still feels like a Stevie solo record and a Lindsey solo record on shuffle.
Lindsey's a more flamboyant live performer than Christine, but that doesn't mean he'd dominate a live show. The show will most likely feature a fairly even split between his songs and her songs (with a few other FM songs thrown in, hopefully). It might even feature more of her songs than his, since she's had so many hits. Chances are she'd get up and play the accordion, guitar, maracas, or other instruments on a few songs, and I doubt she'd be buried behind her keyboard the whole show. If they don't use any backing musicians (which I hope they wouldn't), automatically she'd have a bigger musical role to play.
Yes, Lindsey has a big ego, but he has a big talent. From the recent quotes, it's clear that he recognizes and appreciates that Christine has a big talent, too. I have a feeling he would love performing with her, Mick, and John. I know I would love seeing that.

With Christine back, not likely. There's a built in curiosity factor that you're grotesquely underestimating.
Lindsey will replace Stevie songs with longer solos.
Stevie only had eight songs in the set. "Hold Me," "Got A Hold On Me," "Trouble," and "Go Insane" are hits they could easily add, plus whatever new songs, plus whatever pre-1975 songs they would add for the band's 50th Anniversary. Not only could they easily replace Stevie's songs in the set, they would still have too many songs to choose from. This comment alone makes you sound incredibly ignorant.
Christine will remain in the left hand corner behind her keyboards.
And Lindsey would be everywhere else. It's not like Stevie does a lot for their stage show anymore. It's not like 1975-1983 as far as she goes. She mostly loiters, arms flailing, with the occasional twirl these days. Meh.
Also, interviews and tv appearances will be sparse, if not non-existent.
Oh no . . . They won't get to play on Ellen. Bummer.

No, that's such a load of sh!t- it would sell a lot more. They have the FM name- that counts for a lot.

No he won't. It will be an intimate show and I'm sure the music will be fitting for the occasion. He knows how to craft a show- he's not stupid. I hope there will be space for Lindsey/Chris solo songs, pre 75 CM songs and PG songs.
Christine will remain in the left hand corner behind her keyboards.
I'm sure she won't. She doesn't stay behind her keyboards during full 5 shows she she wont stay there now. She wont venture away too much from her keyboards but I'm sure they'd now be more prominent front of stage. She's the co-star.
Also, interviews and tv appearances will be sparse, if not non-existent.

You mean Christine McVie who came back and sold out 6 shows at the Forum with her return.. when just a year earlier FMac couldn't sell the Staples center? We won't even talk about the billboard article that gave her a little credit for being gone 15 years and turning the band on it's head for a 1 1/2 tour.

people who so obviously care only about SN in this band, now when she gets to do what she wants, are still not happy. they can see her all on her own without all these other band members that they seem to hate so much. and obviously there's no reason for these chiffs to go see this particular 4/5 FM so i'm really not sure why they care how those shows will go.

You don't have to be a coal miner in another country to not know who Christine McVie is. Stevie had several hit solo songs and albums, had several solo videos, and appeared in a lot of magazine articles and covers. She's been solo on shows like the Tonight Show, David Letterman, Ellen, Rosie, the Voice, American Idol, America's Got Talent, and Dancing with the Stars. Those shows keep her name and image visible to the public. Christine simply doesn't have the name recognition that Stevie does. This is not a criticism or insult to Christine, simply a fact. She moved back to England some 15 years ago- in that time, Stevie has continued to release music and appear on TV. Hell, she even had a song sampled by Beyonce! That kind of thing keeps Stevie well-known.

Yes, Stevie is a publicity whore. Duets with Tom Petty and Don Henley in 1981, Bruce Hornsby and Kenny G in 1989, Natalie Maines and Sheryl Crow in 2001. Stevie loves kissing the asses of hit makers de jour. Which is all something the others never really cared too much about.
And Stevie's prolific release schedule during Christine's abscence? Two solo albums, two solo comps, a live DVD, and an album of leaked demos she found on YouTube. Color me underwhelmed. She only had one more album of new material than the woman who essentially retired from the industry.

I don't disagree with much of what you said. All those things you mentioned, including things I'd completely forgotten about, like Stevie's tour with Sheryl Crow, her duets, and her appearances on TV all helped to keep her name and face in the public eye. Her appearances on the Voice lasted for several episodes, and that's a lot of exposure. I don't know that it helped her sell albums, but it sure kept her in the public eye and introduced her to people ages 6 and up. If you can find many 16 year olds that know who Christine McVie is, I'd be thrilled... and shocked. Same thing with Lindsey. This is not a criticism. If you want to phrase it as "she's a publicity whore," (and I think that's where the 'hate' comes in), fine. But that's why many more people know who Stevie is, certainly much more than Christine or Lindsey.

Saying FM should not tour as a foursome without Stevie because people at the water cooler at work know her and like her better than the others is ridiculous. Even if this were true, it doesn't take into account that "best known" doesn't necessarily equal "quality music." The majority of FM fans (as opposed to millennial Stevie fans and casual admirers of Rumours) are interested in the music first: the selfies, the drag shows, the American Horror Story cameos, the costume changes, the "Landslide"-is-about-Katrina-and-all-other-important-world-events-shtick, and the Voice and American Idol guest spots are fun and all, but they have nothing really to do with the music we're interested in hearing.
Saying FM should not tour as a foursome without Stevie because people at the water cooler at work know her and like her better than the others is ridiculous.
plus, name Fleetwood Mac is way more commercially viable than name Stevie Nicks.
so there's no argument there.

Ah, now I see why this thread is making people cranky. I'm not saying FM shouldn't tour without Stevie, in fact I would see FM in concert without her- this thread is my opinion of why I think they won't release an album or tour without her. I really think Mick and the others want to avoid what happened before, with Behind the Mask polarizing fans, or worse yet Time, which crashed and burned. After the success of the Dance, they've done a really good job of keeping their legacy going. The band went from nearly disappearing to being the comeback of the decade, and I think they all want to go out on a high note, and the best way to ensure that would be to have all 5 participate in the recording and tour.
I bet Mick thinks the album and tour won't be nearly as successful without Stevie, and that's why they're holding off. And I agree with him. Doesn't mean a tour wouldn't make money, but even Christine said without Stevie, they would play at more 'intimate' venues, so clearly the band feels the same way.
Again, I love Christine- Save Me, As Long As You Follow, Brown Eyes, Warm Ways, You Make Loving Fun, Did You Ever Love Me, Skies the Limit, Love in Store, my God, the woman sings most of my favorite FM songs! I even like her solo record from 1984 or whenever. But do you really think people under 30 know she wrote Don't Stop? They don't. We fans, who check this board and know every song by every member, and can name every solo album and what year they came out, we are the minority.
Sorry if my opinion irritated anyone, that was not my intent. But so many of us are speculating why Chris and Lindsey haven't went ahead and just released the album without Stevie, and this is my guess.

I'll take both sides on this one.I say yes on one hand and I say no on the other hand because you have Christine there. If the Mac was only with Mick ,John and Lindsey. Then I consider a Lindsey solo with the Mac rhythm section of Mick and John as guests.

Yeah, that's why tickets cost four times as much and were harder to get.
And, Stevie had the fewest top-ten Fleetwood Mac hits.
Lindsey had Go Your Own Way, Tusk, and Big Love. Stevie had their only #1 hit, Dreams (I had to be snarky LOL) and Sara. Rhiannon, Gypsy, and Seven Wonders were, of course, complete failures because they didn't reach the top 10, and therefore don't count. And Silver Springs and Landslide were utter failures, as well. Considering the way Lindsey dominated their albums, it's interesting he's had the most recorded FM songs and yet the fewest singles. What could that say about his songs? Maybe they weren't strong enough to sell an album? I love a lot of his songs, whether they were hits or not, but if your measure of success is top 10, I don't know...
Since you mentioned the top 10, how many top 10 singles have Lindsey, Christine, and Stevie had outside of FM, since that's your measure of success? Lindsey-1;. Christine-1; Stevie-5. Top 20 hits? Lindsey-0; Christine-0; Stevie-5 more. Top 10 solo albums? Or can we quit already?

Not saying they were failures, just as Say You Love Me, Think About Me, and Everywhere weren't failures. But, you can't blindly say that because Stevie is the bigger household name, she's the only one the public cares about. She was a bigger household name in 1987, the last time they had a hit album of new material, and Lindsey and Christine had top five hits, while Stevie barely cracked the top 20.
And Silver Springs and Landslide were utter failures, as well.
As were Second Hand News, I'm So Afraid, and Songbird.
Considering the way Lindsey dominated their albums, it's interesting he's had the most recorded FM songs and yet the fewest singles.
How is that surprising? He's also the one who was hell bent on moving the band away from the mainstream, which ultimately saved their artistic credentials.
Since you mentioned the top 10, how many top 10 singles have Lindsey, Christine, and Stevie had outside of FM, since that's your measure of success? Lindsey-1;. Christine-1; Stevie-5.
Actually, Stevie only had four:
SDMHA: (a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers song that they turned into a duet for her album).
Leather & Lace (a duet with Don Henley)
Stand Back
Talk To Me (which she didn't write)
Christine and Lindsey wrote or cowrote their solo singles. So, if you limit it to songs they wrote/cowrote and sang lead by themselves (no celebrity duets to pad the numbers), they're pretty even at one apiece.
However, Stevie SHOULD have more success as a solo artist. She's the only one who worked to be a name outside of Fleetwood Mac (with hit duets with Kenny Loggins, Tom Petty, and Don Henley to begin her career outside of the band). Lindsey (before he left), Christine, and Mick only did solo projects as extracurricular activities.

Hey, I love Christine McVie!! But I'm a FM fanatic. Unfortunately, most of my co-workers don't know who she is. And mentioning Got a Hold on Me doesn't ring any bells for them. The average person has no idea who she is.
Average person? I'm glad that you're in touch with that element.

You forgot Whenever I Call You Friend, which was a top 10 song. And a top 10 song is a top 10 song, whether it was a duet or written by someone else.
And I don't think Stevie is "the only one the public cares about." I'm not saying that she's better than Lindsey or Christine, or John and Mick, for that matter. Having more hits or albums doesn't mean artistically she's a better singer... but it does make her very well known. If American Idol had asked Christine to be on the show, she probably would have declined, for whatever reason- fear of flying or maybe she is quiet and has no desire to be on tv. The point is, AI was a huge show and iconic, and it introduced Stevie to younger kids. America's Got Talent did the same thing for her.
THAT is why people know Stevie and not Christine.
There's too much nonsense in this thread to respond to all of it, but just responding to the title and initial post - an album released by Fleetwood Mac containing songs written and sung by Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham only, is as much a Fleetwood Mac album as Say You Will, Time, Behind the Mask, Rumours, Mystery to Me, Bare Trees, and Then Play On. Give me a break...

What doesn't make sense? A FM album without Stevie will sell the same as a Lindsey solo album.
Who cares if it sells? I don't want any members of FM to die poverty-stricken. But I don't think that's likely to happen, even if they never cross Stevie's path again.
So, the idea of an album put out by 70 year old people not breaking sales records is not something that bothers me at all. I wish it wouldn't bother the 70 year olds. If they have finally evolved to a point where it doesn't matter, I'm proud of them. Of course, I'll believe it when I see it. We may never get this album, but if we do, sales will be the last thing on my mind.

You must never have seen a Lindsey soloshow. Lounge? Don't make me laugh. I hope they ditch the backupsingers, and -players too. Lindsey's solo's have never topped the 5 minutes. And if you like Fleetwood Mac, their more rocking liveside is as old as this band is. Including some lengthened live-staples. The seventies and early eighties Steviesongs that were stretched out were legendary: Rhiannon and Sisters Of The Moon. With delicate and wildly rocking guitarextensions.
Big Love, The Ledge and Walk a thin Line are not solowork. And would all be very welcome at a 'Fleetwood Mac-extra concentrated'-show.

I haven't seen Lindsey solo. I know he called Christine and Stevie's solo tour lounge acts. Ditch the backup singers? I doubt it- he was the one who insisted on adding them for the Tango tour, before he backed out.
Come and Not That Funny live were so long, maybe they just felt like 12 minutes. Each. I thought Big Love was all Lindsey, and same thing with the Ledge and Walk a Thin Line- weren't all three songs recorded at Lindsey's home studio? None of the other band members are on those songs.

Source on him insisting on using Stevie's backup singers? All I've ever heard was that he wanted another guitarist (who, ironically, was going to be Billy Burnette if he had stayed, from what Mick said at the time). As for the lounge act, he walked that back after doing his first solo tour.

Big Love is a full band song, anyone can hear that. The whole band is all over it. Except Stevie who was busy sniffin glue or something.
They were definately on Walk a thin line. To my knowledge, the only Tusksong that is only Lindsey is The Ledge. The rest are all remakes of his homerecordings with the band in the studio. But whatever, they were Fleetwood mac songs. If Lindsey plays big love on his own doesn't make it a solosong.
You talk about 12 minute solo's. That's rediculous. Those songs have substantial vocalsections or other instrumental parts than guitarsolo's. Come and I'm So afraid were together in the set only one FM-tour, in 2003/4. In a two and a half hour plus show, two five minute guitarsolo's. Nothing out of the ordinary rockshow.
Gold Dust Woman lasts equally long, or even longer.
I saw Stevie solo after The Other Side of The Mirror. Do you have ANY idea how long Edge of Seventeen lasted? Including a lengthy guitarsolo? Still, that was the ONLY hightlight during a flat boring lounge act, even supported by a spinecringingly bad loungeset from Richard Marx, of all people. Aweful. What a waste of time and money.

Okay, a few more questions (though I bet Steve D. by now has already asked a couple of these). I vaguely recall reading somewhere that even if Lindsey hadn't left in 1987, you were probably going to be asked to at least be a backing guitarist/vocalist on the 1987 tour. Is that true? It was an interview with Mick, and he said adding back up singers was Lindsey's idea, and that they agreed to it. I cannot remember the name of the magazine, but it was right before the tour began. I am 100% certain about this. Mick said the band was willing to do anything to get Lindsey to tour, from adding the back up singers to only being on the road for 2 months. When Lindsey backed out, they increased the tour dates and added the back up singers. Adding a guitarist, they did that on the Mirage tour, so that was nothing new. No, both Mick and Christine have always said that Lindsey wanted more musicians. No one said he wanted more back up singers.
Lindsey wanted more guitarists and, in keeping with that, he ended up having a guitar army on his first solo tour.
In the October 10, 1987 issue of Billboard Mick said:
http://bla.fleetwoodmac.net/index.php?page=index_v2&id=859&c=18
With Buckingham gone, two guitarists--Rick Vito and Billy Burnette--have been added to the touring lineup. Both players have known the other Mac members for years, and, according to McVie, “They fit in perfectly. Billy’s mainly playing rhythm, which is refreshing and really fills out the sound. When we talked with Lindsey about touring and augmenting the band, he was planning on having more people--maybe four guitarists and six percussionists.”
That's what he has always said on this subject.

Great topic! While I love the Christine and Lindsey collaborations, let's be honest - they're basically Lindsey, guest starring Christine. Take Stevie off of Tango In The Night, for instance, and what have you got? Lindsey songs, and Lindsey songs with Christine's contributions.
When she came back to the band and was all excited about working with Lindsey, a big to-do was made about how they had written songs together - and all I could think was *groan* - we're gonna get a bunch of Christine McVie songs with none of Chris' soul in them - sterile, technological compositions with Chris' vocals and a bunch of chirping, dinging sounds and overdone guitar.
Good songs though they may be, Christine's essence is completely swallowed up by Lindsey's when they work together.

Christine's four songs on Tango are so important to the vitality of that record. Lindsey's songs might out number hers, but hers weigh a lot there. Without them, the album would sound cold and paranoid.
Both Lindsey AND Christine overplay his contributions to her songs. He is an important producer, but her songs in demo form are usually fleshed out and well-crafted, before he even gets to them. And, in the case of Everywhere, I prefer the demo!

According to folks here, Lindsey is playing guitar on Songbird, so it's not a solo song. Lindsey plays all the instruments on The Ledge, and none of the other members play on it, so it is a solo song, just like Make Me a Mask. But they're on a FM album, so they're considered FM songs.
I'm glad Christine and Stevie don't work that way. That's not a diss on Lindsey, if doing that made him happy and kept him in the band, that's great.

Christine's four songs on Tango are so important to the vitality of that record. Lindsey's songs might out number hers, but hers weigh a lot there. Without them, the album would sound cold and paranoid.

That Everywhere demo is fantastic. I love her Behind the Mask (title track) demo, too!! Christine can produce her own stuff, she's just an artist that knows what's up. Know's what's good. And, let's it come out the way it wants to. You have to understand art to get that much. A lot of people don't understand collaborations and what it takes to be an artist that's open to letting people work with you. It's why she had 4 hits by Rumours where Lindsey and Stevie each had 2. And in Stevie's case she had a number 1 hit. And listen to how much of a band effort Dreams is.

Great topic!
sterile, technological compositions with Chris' vocals and a bunch of chirping, dinging sounds and overdone guitar.
Love it. :]

"He (Lindsey) was planning on having more people--maybe four guitarists and six percussionists"

That's what he has always said on this subject.

If "Overdub" can demand extra players then Stevie should be entitled to do the same...
If Stevie want's "additional guitars" by __________ (insert name of Stevie's choice) then the Band should allow it even if someone (LB) throws a tantrum over it...

The same with Stevie's songs...It's often said something is lost when LB gets his mitts on her songs...

Well, he probably gets upset because nasal gets her additional guitar players by using her spirit catcher. I mean, she did use it to bring back Christine (according to her). Now if she got Jeff Beck with that damn thing... I'd put up with chipmunks singing Landslide.

Sometimes, Lindsey intrudes too much upon her songs, but that's usually because she lets him. Think About Me is a prime example, as is Isn't It Midnight. Both songs work really well, but I can see his footprints all over them. The demo of Think About Me features her original vocal--and it's superior to the finished result, where she's washed out by his loud voice. On Isn't It Midnight, he appears to have run her voice through some sort of pitch-raiser, "mucked about with it" as Christine would say (circa the ITM interviews). But, overall, his creative energy has often given her songs added strength. In demo, Hold Me is a very well-crafted tune that she has fully worked out. But the changes he made to it in the final arrangement turned a good tune into a wallop of a hit. His guitar work on Temporary One is very good--and it doesn't overwhelm or disguise the excellence of her vocal. One need only look at how bloated and washed out some of Christine's songs sound on Behind the Mask to see that her work with Greg Lindani (sp?) is equally generous--and not always to the best effect. On that record, only Save Me and the title track approach what the songs deserve. On the other hand, Patrick Leonard, the producer on Love Shines and Heart of Stone, knows exactly what to do with her songs. And Hollywood from Time is among the band's best--I think.

Carlos was there for as long as he was because Stevie wanted it.
