View Full Version : Stevie owes this band NOTHING

So, I can totally understand all of your frustrations about Stevie doing a tour and likely being the main reason that the new FM album is delayed until further notice. I'm annoyed too. BUT. I was thinking about what she has contributed to this band since 1975 and it's astonishing. Also, lots of people fail to recognise many of the following points. I've made loads about how she has contributed to this band.

Here goes...

- 1976 - Rhiannon is the single that propels FM to #1.
- 1977 - Dreams is the Mac's ONLY #1 single.
- 1981 - Stevie has enormous success with Bella Donna but keeps her
supporting tour short in order to join FM in the studio for Mirage.
- 1982 - The success of Bella Donna creates more interest in the new Mac
album and ultimately helps it to reach #1.
- 1987 - Even though Buckingham leaves, Stevie stays with the Mac and tours
for over a year.
- 1990 - After a successful solo album and supporting tour, Stevie agrees to join
the Mac for Behind the Mask. She is warned that it could sell less
than her own solo album and harm her image. It does sell less but she
still chooses to go on a huge supporting tour.
- 1991 - Even after Stevie's unwavering commitment to the band, Mick refuses
to let her have Silver Springs, which is HER SONG, for her
Timespace album.
- 1997 - Landslide is the song that captures the most attention from The
Dance and helps the album reach #1.
- 2002 - Even after a successful solo album and tour, Stevie goes back in to the
studio with the Mac even though her close friend and ally Christine is no
longer with them.
- 2003 - Stevie goes on a mammoth tour to help support the album which lasts
well over a year.
- 2009 - Another huge tour with the Mac without Christine.
- 2013 - Another huge tour with the Mac without Christine.
- 2014 - She is willing to put off promotion and touring in support of her new
solo album to tour with the Mac for over a year.

So, for the minute I can't think of anything else exactly but does that help to demonstrate how committed and vital she has been to Fleetwood Mac? If you don't think so then I think ignorance plays a large part in your judgement.

She's more than entitled to do what she wants. She owed the band nothing, even though I would LOVE a new album to come eventually when she and the rest of the band are all happy and ready.

New Years 1975- Mick Fleetwood asks Lindsey to join the band and Lindsey won't join unless he can bring Stevie

I don't think she owes them anything other than clarity about her intentions. She's voluntarily in a band and there are certain obligations that come with that.

I think that being in a band is giving and taking.
Stevie is well known for biting the hand that feeds her.

At the very least, she does owe the band RESPECT.

And the number she has been playing with Lindsey and Chris over recording an album is anything but that.

I agree with those that believe Stevie owes this band NOTHING. I don't think Christine or Lindsey do either. And if John were to quit, I'd say he's paid his dues, too. It's long been known that Mick keeps this band together. And he's probably the one that has had to count on it the most. He has guilted all of them from time to time to get back on the road as he makes no money on royalties and he spends money lavashly. (well, they all do- this is a band known for it's excesses)

The other part of the discussion here is Stevie owes the band respect. I think she has made her intentions clear to Mick and he doesn't like it. So he (like they all do) panders to the press to get leverage, hoping it will push Stevie back "into line" with his band. I believe she has probably been totally clear with her intentions. But Mick wants the Rumours 5. He needs the Rumours 5 and he now has Christine back.

As Michele said multiple times, I think the rest of band is to be blamed for not moving forward. They should do what they want to do: Break out into solo or duet groups if they want, record and tour as Fleetwood Mac, (as someone mentions a la Tango) and do whatever they want. Or, if they choose, they can wait for Stevie. I suspect Mick will continue to try to guilt and pressure Stevie in the press. But I agree, none of them own anything to Fleetwood Mac at this point. If Mick wants a band, he could find a replacement for any of them. It's Fleetwood Mac's history.

I agree with this totally. I think Stevie HAS made her intentions clear to the band and Mick is refusing to accept it. Just because WE don't know that for a fact, WE speculate and spew hatred. WE form opinions based on hearsay and the fact that Mick whines about her every chance he gets. You don't see Christine and John doing interviews and complaining about Stevie's reluctance to record. Lindsey.......well we all know how that works. She shoots barbs at him, he shoots barbs at her, they kiss and make up today, tomorrow they hate each other. It's called good old fashioned LOVE/HATE. It adds drama to an already volatile relationship and they both love that drama. SO, yes, I do think that the other members of this band are clear on where Stevie stands. The rest of us don't really matter in the scheme of things. Love her or hate her, she's got a right to do what she wants and apparently she wants to go solo right now. Good for her!

How do you/we know that Stevie has not in fact told Mick "I will NEVER work with Lindsey on a new FM record ever again"...Personally I think she has in fact told Mick this and it looks like Mick has tried every trick in the book short of firing her to try and get her to change her mind...How many years since the last full FM record???Looks like Stevie is standing her ground and Mick is unwilling to give up his "cash cow" touring revenue in order to move FM forwards...

Keep in mind, it's a bit telling that she wants to be the boss right now.
She took a potshot at LB. She fired back at Mick a bit. But at the end of the day, I don't think a 3 month tour is going to affect a FM album in 2017. Mick is touring, as well. I think she may have picked the down time correctly. If she extends the tour into 2017 that's different. But I think this still may be on track.

I think Stevie has great respect for FM but a certain band member has little respect for Stevie as an artist and that's the problem...After all the years Stevie has been in this band I think she has earned the right to record a few songs within the frame work of FM the way she wants...If Mick were smart he would tell Lindsey "Look Stevie is going to record her songs the way she wants with the producer of her choice and I don't want you giving her a hard time over it just do what she wants"

If FM would have done this the record probably would have been out by now...Yes Stevie's song may have been different but at least the complainers would have their FM songs from CM/LB...

Of course, Stevie has written/co-written as many top ten hits as Lindsey and less top ten hits than Christine, Mac or solo.

(Note: Stevie didn't write "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" or "Talk To Me")

Lindsey
Go Your Own Way
Tusk
Trouble
Big Love

Christine
Don't Stop
You Make Loving Fun
Hold Me
Got A Hold On Me
Little Lies

BlueDenimLamp, I think you've hit the nail on the head. In light of her recent RS interview, I think that Stevie Nicks is FINE with the idea of TOURING with Fleetwood Mac ONCE every 2-3 years----but THAT'S ALL. Stevie has probably told Mick in private that she has NO intention of recording a new album with Lindsey Buckingham at the production helm. She loves him one minute and hates him the next. It's easy to go out on the road when you really don't have to see ANYONE except for the 2 hours onstage each night. Technically, with personal assistants and handlers in tow, she could spend a year on the road with Lindsey and not really talk to him much. Being holed up in a recording studio with the "creative genius" is another story. The ONLY two people interested in making a new Fleetwood Mac record at this point are Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie. Mick, John, and Stevie couldn't care less about an "album". Moreover, NONE of these members stand to make a DIME off of a new Mac album. The CASH comes in TOURING. Mick just wants CASH from touring. Stevie would rather hang out with Dave Stewart, her handlers, and solo gal pals..............and John wants to be lounging at home or sailing a boat. CASE CLOSED

Mick & Stevie run the band...Lindsey may have the say in the studio but apart from that it's Mick and Stevie running the show...I suspect that Mick is more terrified of Stevie quitting than Lindsey...If LB quits Mick brings Rick back and problem solved...At this stage of the game a tour with Rick in the band would be almost as profitable as one with LB...

Lindsey Buckingham is NOT going to quit Fleetwood Mac at this stage in his life. He is no longer the carefree, fly by the seat of your pants, creative genius, bachelor that he used to be. Although Lindsey already has tons of cash, I'm sure he would like to continue financially setting his young children and much younger wife up for life. Fleetwood Mac provides the touring CASH COW that he needs to do just that. Songwriting royalties from 30 year old songs only go so far.

I don't know why so many folks have their panties in a wad over this delay in the album. This is what Stevie and Fleetwood Mac have done since she started her solo career. How many times have we heard her say that she goes back and forth to Fleetwood Mac? She spends a couple years with them and then a couple years solo. She will be going back to the band and my bet is that there will be another album...but it will likely be 2018 before it is out. This is what has happened since 1981.

Those folks who don't want her in the band and think she is "what rhymes with witch" are just going to have to be patient as I don't think anything will change. Stevie has the right to do her own thing...especially since FM has known what will happen after this tour since 1981.

I sincerely hope that Stevie's people are seeing the HATE that she's getting nowadays! Bitch has finally burned bridges...

I've said it for 10 years, but she is the WORST thing that ever happened to FM.

Kick that dumb broad to the curb, and let her enjoy her dwindling solo career, where she can be the ~boss~.

UNGRATEFUL ****.

Actually, she's pretty much a big reason that they are still here and viable at this point........ Good thing Lindsey made sure she was brought along, right? Bet he regrets that now, because he will NEVER shine in the spotlight like she does. Now don't get me wrong, they would have a modest following, I'm sure, but nothing like they have now. Oh, and certainly no number one hit, right? Yeah......
Also, I'm pretty sure Stevie's people couldn't care less about the hate coming from a few people here. After all, the majority of people love her. Check out her positive press over the last few days, the fact that her tickets are selling decently and she's back to making TV appearances. I'd say that she's definitely got more fans than haters. Get it girl!

I couldn't agree more. Stevie "haters" can say whatever they want, but she's doing exactly what some of you wish the rest of FM were doing right now: She's doing her thing, she's happy about it, and though I am sure she wants success and public recognition, she is doing her shows to get the songs she loves out there no matter what. Now I know some people's cynicism will stop them from seeing this.
Ultimately, Stevie's just doing what makes her hear content and some of the hate she's getting here comes from the fact the rest of band can't seem to do the same (musically) right now. I think her people can deal with that hate, if they ever see it...

Exactly. That's IT.

We all know what's coming. Hopefully later than sooner, but it's coming.

And we'd like ONE last good album from them, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. Because it just might be...

And it's not like she owes them anything. I mean, she'd probably be living in a rusty old trailer now, still waiting tables, if it weren't for them. Yeah, she owes them nothing...

FM's lucky to have Stevie in the band and Mick counts his lucky stars every time Stevie comes back to FM from her solo work...

I think the drama is manufactured to keep the band in the headlines. They're all multi-millionaires so I'm sure they can all keep themselves occupied for a year or two. Mick's on his own blues tour, Lindsey's buying property, Christine's probably drinking mojitos in Tahiti, and John probably couldn't care less.

Stevie's tour will also help promote the Mirage reissue. So this is all good press. I do think fans add fire to the drama, which all plays into the marketing strategy.

Except back then they weren't approaching the 50 year milestone. That's such a big thing for a band. There aren't too many big bands out there that have hit such a landmark. Shame it looks as if they won't be celebrating it with anything special. Guess they'll have to wait for Stevie for a tour in 2018 (snore) and mark the 50 years in the 51st year (just like the Rumours 35 year reissue being 36 years after the event- doh!).

Just my opinion (obviously) but I firmly believe that if their name isn't Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood or John McVie and you're a member of Fleetwood Mac, then yes, you owe the band. The band is what made you, not the other way around. The band lived through countless incarnations, two genre changes and multiple decades. So it's my firm belief that if you're a member of such a band, you should always do what's best for said band if you're still in it because they made your career.

That doesn't just go for Fleetwood Mac, that goes for every famous band and its members. If that's not what the members want, then its best to just go and not halt the creative process of said band.

Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine have all paid their dues and don't owe the band anything. They've given and taken, and if they all decide to make another album, I would be thrilled, but theycertainlydon't have to if they don't want to.

Who knows what would have happened if things had turned out differently. Hollywood is full of the ghosts of almost were someones.
On December 31,1974 . . .

Fleetwood Mac had the legacy (Peter Green years)
Fleetwood Mac already had a Greatest Hits album.
Fleetwood Mac had been heavily featured in music rags (Fake Mac)
Fleetwood Mac had been on two national music television shows.
Fleetwood Mac had the contract with Warner, and wasn't at risk of getting dropped.
Fleetwood Mac was independently managed, so they could do whatever they wanted without interference from outsiders.

Furthermore . . .

Christine had the first top-20 hit.
Christine had the most top-10 hits in Fleetwood Mac (4), followed by Lindsey (3), and Stevie (2).
The last top-10 hit Stevie wrote was "Stand Back," and the last one she sang was "Talk To Me."
The last two top-10 hits any of them had were "Big Love" and "Little Lies."
"Everywhere" was the last song to hit in the top-15.
"Rooms On Fire" was the last to hit in the top-20.
"Save Me" was the last time any of them hit the top-40.

The reality is that Stevie's importance to Fleetwood Mac has been inflated because of her solo career, but she's not the most important in the context of Fleetwood Mac.

SteveMacD
09-17-2016, 05:06 AM
Stevie's success can't continually be thrown in everyone's face without further examination. In terms of top-10 hits that they actually wrote or co-wrote, Christine still comes out on top. Christine had five top-10 hits, while the others had four each.

CHRISTINE
Don't Stop (3)
You Make Loving Fun (9)
Hold Me (4)
Got A Hold On Me (10)
Little Lies (4)

STEVIE
Dreams (1)
Sara (7)
Leather & Lace (6)
Stand Back (5)
(Stevie didn't write "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" or "Talk To Me.")

LINDSEY
Go Your Own Way (10)
Tusk (8)
Trouble (9)
Big Love (5)

So while Stevie had the only number one hit with Fleetwood Mac, she's also had the fewest top-ten hits. Her value to the band as a songwriter has been overstated. Christine is the real voice of the band. The ticket sales between 2013 and 2014/15 kind of prove that.

Wow, I didn't think anybody questioned that Stevie was the most successful of all the members. Stevie has 8 studio albums, plus 2 greatest hits, a 3 CD box set, and a live CD. And 2 live DVDs. Plus her live vhs and video collection on vhs. Of her studio albums, I believe 3 are multi-platinum, 2 are platinum, and 2 are gold. 5 were top 10 hits, 1 was #1. She's had 5 top 10 songs, and 4 top 20 songs. The Dance had 2 huge radio hits, both by Stevie.

I believe Christine had 1 top 10 hit and 1 top 40 hit. I believe Lindsey had 1 top 10 hit. I think Christine had 3 albums, maybe 1 of which went gold. She had one club tour. I can't tell you how many albums Lindsey has released, maybe 5? Maybe 1 went gold, and he's done 3 or 4 small venue tours. Stevie has done at least 12 amphitheatre tours, appeared on several magazine covers and been interviewed on radio and television, plus performed on several tv shows. I can't think of any time Christine has performed solo in the past 30 years. Lindsey has performed a handful of times on tv. Stevie has held several Grammy nominations; I don't know about Lindsey or Christine.

Oh, and she's the only one in the band with a #1 song. Can't forget that.

I was obsessed with Billboard magazine back in the day, and it really was a great tool, but even I have to admit it doesn't tell the whole story. The introduction of Soundscan showed that earlier charts had a margin of error to say the least.

But besides that, charts only rank popularity that week and say nothing of lasting impact. Stevie also had: Rhiannon (11), Edge of Seventeen (11), and Gypsy (12), all of which are still played regularly on various radio formats (unlike Big Love or Hold Me). And then there's Gold Dust Woman and especially Landslide, which have no chart ranking because they were never singles, but are must-play concert staples because they are as much a part of the public consciousness as the official singles.

So while I agree that using her solo success as proof of importance in the band is misleading, the statistics you cite are also skewing the picture.

And as far as the last tour's success, it is obvious that the Classic Five lineup will always be a bigger draw than any subset of four, so that isn't all about Christine. Imagine if it was Stevie who was back after a 16-year hiatus.

Obviously Stevie isn't a required part of the band. Even without her, they still have twice the number of lead singers as most bands. But she has given them more than just a handful of hit singles. She's a charismatic frontperson, with a persona and image that captivates fans and piques the interest of the media. Whenever you see a concert review, the picture is always Stevie, Stevie with Lindsey, or Stevie with Mick. I realize that's what drives a lot of fans crazy, but having a high-profile star in the band does a lot to keep the band relevant. When The Dance came out, I remember people saying they wanted to check it out "to see what Stevie looks like now." But then they got drawn back into the music once again.

Without Stevie, they are a talented musical unit who no doubt would have moved some records. But that describes a lot of faceless bands of the seventies who eventually drifted off into the sunset. Stevie is their hook. She set them apart and put them over the top as a superstar act. Did FM launch her career? Absolutely. But it's not the one-sided relationship some people want to make it out to be. If it was, half the threads in this forum wouldn't exist.

You can play the numbers game all you very well please, but you have to look at the bigger picture. In terms of maintaining longevity for this band, Stevie comes out on top, no doubt.

She has the most successful and continual solo career out of anyone from the band, and keeps them in the spotlight. Since Say You Will, it has been Stevie that has kept this band alive, albeit from a solo position. A greatest hits package, multiple solo tours, two studio albums, live concert releases, photograph exhibitions, album rereleases, television appearances, the list goes on.

Her American Horror Story appearance and featured songs helped bring the band to a younger audience, not to mention her talk show performances.

Meanwhile, Stevie has continually been criticized for doing nothing for this band. Yes, the publicity helps her own image and legacy - but one would be remiss not to automatically include FM as part of it.

Had Lindsey and Mick run the show the past 10+ years, there would be a chain of mildly successful Fleetwood Mac-themed restaurants... but that's just my opinion.

EDIT:: in regards to chart positions, the two songs Fleetwood Mac are most remembered for are Rhiannon (not top 10) and Landslide, which wasn't even released as a single.

I'd have to respectfully challenge that statement. It might be different somewhere in your gypsy soul, but here in the UK they are mostly remembered for Little Lies, Everywhere, Don't Stop, Go Your Own Way, Dreams and The Chain (and Albatross, Oh Well and The Green Manalishi). If you asked the average person on the street, probably 95% wouldn't be able to place Fleetwood Mac as the band behind Landslide and Rhiannon (in fact, just as many people have probably never heard of Landslide and Rhiannon).

I appreciate it is probably very different in the US and other places.

Okay, let's put it a different way: Christine had as many songs on the Greatest Hits album as Stevie and Lindsey combined. She was the voice. I wonder how the story would be different now if Christine had gotten help in 1991 and dealt with the issues that kept her off the road for the better part of a quarter century.

Did the thought ever occur to Stevie's fans that a large part of solo success is largely because she gives Fleetwood Mac fans a sense of connection to the band?

I saw her solo on the TISL tour (my only SN solo show) for probably the same reason I've seen chiffon-heads at a Mick Fleetwood's Zoo show (when Bekka Bramlett was one of the singers) and at a Peter Green show. I wanted that sense of connection.

And, she gives people that connection.

Hate to nitpick but it was "Say You Love Me" that finally propelled "Fleetwood Mac " to number one .

So it was a joined effort after all. Christine brought the first single, Stevie the only number one, and Lindsey the most popular song of the band.

Stevie doesn't own the band anything. That's why she should leave if the doesn't feel comfortable around her fellow band members anymore. But she says she won't ever leave and the band won't split because of her, so I guess they're destined to stand each other until they die.:lol:

I don't think she owes them anything other than clarity about her intentions. She's voluntarily in a band and there are certain obligations that come with that.

She said the band will never split because of her. But like you say, if you're in a band you have to fulfill certain obligations. If she doesn't want to, then the rest of the band I think it's entitled to do whatever they want.
Too bad they didn't release the album as a FM work.

Onstage with FM for the past few years, she's BORING AF. Before Christine came back, Lindsey WAS the show, performing with the energy of a teenager, while she showed the energy of a cement block.

Lindsey is by far the most energetic member of the band. Stevie can't even move!

And I say that with the utmost respect for elder people. :)

Are you referring to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies or about cassata, cannoli etc. ?

All of it. If it wasn't for Sicily there wouldn't be any Italy!! People only come to see Sicily and they sell way more then Italy. And if Sicily wants to go solo and be it's own country, it should be able to do whatever it wants. :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

I'm happy to see that the band is all finding ways to fit everything in. Stevie had her solo tour this year, Christine and Lindsey are releasing their album and will have a concert, with possibly more, and then Fleetwood Mac is all coming together for the two festivals this summer. Christine also said they will be playing in Europe in 2019, so that implies the 2018-2019 farewell tour. I'm glad they're all getting their cake and eating it too. Although I really hope they all make it through 2019.

90% of the time it's BBC Radio 2 otherwise Nation radio. The advert is James Wellbeloved and it's a cover of Landslide.

Probably down to the station then. I only ever listen to radio in the car and there's no way I could stomach Chris Evans in the morning. Smooth FM for me. Looked up Wellbeloved- lovely advert- never seen it before.

This is the worst thread I have seen on this board. Just the title of it is like nails down a chalk board  Then with so many comparing and measuring each member against the other. Who had more hits, who sold more albums, who is less successful, who has more talent, etc. Its really sad. I cant imagine a thread like this on another band like the Eagles. Can you imagine something like: Don Henley owes the Eagles NOTHING. He had a successful solo career. Glen Frey only had a few solo hits.
I mean....really! Its so 4th grade stuff.
Fleetwood Mac is like any other band. Each member is a pillar of strength and talent. When they work together its pure magic. To dissect them and make claims who is more talented is pure rubbish. The Mac is probably the most unique band for its members. Its a strength, not a weakness. Each adds something so incredible to the band. Each made each other the super stars they are today.

BBC Radio 2 is the most popular radio station in the UK with around 15 million listeners so chances are, whatever songs I hear on the radio, the majority of UK radio listeners are going to hear too.

Btw, Radio 2 loves Fleetwood Mac.

It's a mentality of insecurity. If you read between the lines, you can learn a lot about a ledgie.

We had a shipper era here during the non-Christine period and it was insufferable. Every post was about their romance. So this post is nothing in comparison. But we keep it movin..

That said, the people that disagree probably have so much more in common beside which member they like, etc. It becomes more visible in chit chat.

Personally I feel Stevie owes FM a few good songs for a new FM record! Prolific songwriter that she claims to be? More BS or has the well run dry?!

Doesn't she have anything important left to say? To inspire, change, and affect people's lives? Isn't that what should be the real driving force of writing and making music? Or is it about sales and money? Is she really that shallow? I hope she proves me wrong. A lot of her words and songs have been so inspirational and moving in my life.

When you have nothing left to say, you have to leave, like Lindsey and Christine did in the past (oh, and don't forget Stevie!).

If your inspiration returns, you can always come back, like they all did.

This privilege of "being in a band but doing whatever I want" doesn't work for me.

Good god, wake tf up. She doesn't NEED any more money. This is about EGO.

She's been acting jealous ever since Christine came back. She didn't realize how much Christine meant to the band's legacy, and to the fans.

She wants to be the center of attention, and she ONLY feels like that now when she's solo(because even when Chris was gone, Lindsey outshone her by leaps and bounds). And she SHOULD be solo, but she won't walk away from the payday, and ~what attention~ she does get with FM.

Lindsey and Chris walked away when they'd had enough, but she won't. She'd rather hold them hostage. She's a drama queen.

She had her turn from 1991-97.

ETA: While on her hiatus,, Christine released a solo album, which is only one solo album and a Fleetwood Mac album less than Stevie's output in that time frame, and she was mostly retired.

ETA2: Lindsey contributed a song to the box set in 1992 when he wasn't in the band anymore and helped finish "Paper Doll," not to mention his cameos on BTM and Time.

If it's something I love, I'd do it. Touring and recording cost most musicians money when all is said and done, but the simple passion for making music is what keeps them going. I'm talking about the people who rent a crappy van, play to 20 people, and staying in someone's basement or a roach motel.

I wish Stevie would make a record with FM, but she's not shallow if she chooses not to. Please...

I believe Christine was willing to participate in the making of Say You Will, but she wasn't willing to tour, so they didn't include her. I agree completely with this. I never understood why they didn't let Chris record. If she had been on SYW and just not toured, I would not have seen her as any less of a member of the band. Same with Stevie now.

I guess her ego was a bit hurt on that last concert on Thursday when a fan shouted at her to shut up and sing.

Chris's return meant sold out arenas and additional concerts on many cities (London, Sydney), something Stevie probably didn't expect.

Many of us wants her out if she clearly doesn't feel comfortable around the rest of the band, and even though she didn't bluntly express it, she say it every time she praises working with her friends (Tom Petty, Don Henley, Chrissie Hynde).

She should leave and end this drama, or say once and for all what she wants so they can all move on with their respective projects.

She has said this in several interviews. The house was secluded and in much need of repair. She restored a historic house that took some time. When she was on the world tour (Behind the Mask) is when the work started. She sort of knew that would be her last Mac tour (at least for awhile back then). She was still living in LA until the earthquake scared her and she moved back to England sometime after that when the house was finished.
