View Full Version : New Mick interview for Rolling Stone

As far as Fleetwood Mac is concerned, you guys wrapped up a world tour – your first in more than a decade with Christine McVie back in the fold – a little less than a year ago. What does the future hold for the band?
Well, we're all dedicated to getting together about a year or so from now and going and doing another two years of touring all over the world, probably. And we also have a huge amount of recorded music. A huge amount. None of it's with Stevie. Or very little. Some of it is very, very old stuff that Lindsey maybe did with her years and years ago. We're not quite sure what will happen with it. But you know, doing this band is a huge investment. We're only off the road for less than a year, and when you add in the time it takes to put a tour together, do rehearsals, get it up and running, the whole thing, it's three years that you don't do anything else. And Stevie has her own life and career and I think … you know, she just doesn't want to spend the time right now. And we're quietly saddened about that but also I sort of understand.
Do you think there will be a new record?
I really don't know. The hope was that there was going to be. I do know that when Christine came back, she came back with a bag full of goods. She ****ing wrote up a storm. She and Lindsey could probably have a mighty strong duet album if they want. In truth I hope it will come to more than that.
So nothing's planned ... but it could happen.
There's always a "could happen" [laughs]. But one thing that's for sure — there really are dozens of songs. And they're really good. And so you think, "****, I don't want it to be that, decades later, when we're all pushing up daisies, someone hears this stuff and goes, 'Well, that should have come out!'" So we'll see.

Just do a duet between Lindsey and Christine. Their music is more compelling, anyway. They have much more of a muse with each other. Plus, their relationship isn't fake. So I expect the music would be more authentic.

I'm stupidly hoping for a reissue of Bella Donna and The Wild Heart.....
I've said it before, etc etc.
Stevie isn't capable of writing new songs, she's not a musician as such, so its all intuitive with her.
Lindsey should take some of this really old stuff of hers, and meld it into worthwhile songs.
Then they might have an Album, who knows.....

I think this is spot on. She's not a composer. She can barely play the piano.
She will always need help writing. I think there is a sense of jealousy when it comes to LB and CM being able to collaborate and crank out songs by themselves. Stevie always has had people around her to give her direction. And she's done quite well with it. Time to buck up and put out.
"None of it's with Stevie.....or very little". What are you saying Mick???
Also, what is Stevie doing then? We are in the 8th month of 2016 and there's no mention of a solo album either.

Good. There will be another tour. It should be their last tour though. They don't need to still be up there when they're pushing 80.

really as a duo they never would have lasted ...
but when was this interview done ? maybe something changed since then ,
but at this point I know i am not wasting a dime on the next tour if they have nothing new or she is in the band and has no new ( new ..not previously done and dropped or never performed ) songs and Lindsey and Christine do

I don't think it says when the interview was done, but I believe it was in rolling stone today so it must've been fairly recently.

But Mick hasn't mentioned this old stuff before. Do you think mentioning it now means something? Like maybe they have been tossing around the idea of digging up some of the old stuff with Stevie on it and throw that in, even if she doesn't appear on new songs with Lindsey and Christine?

slapping together something from unused demos because she doesn't want to give what 2 weeks to record vocals for 2-3 songs ( if she needs more time than that she needs to give it up ) , if she doesn't want to do it let her go
is that fair ? to us ? to the band ? that they piece something usable to include her on the record she want nothing to do with but will gladly take money for . then probably not want to or can't perform what ever it is live

Two solo tours. Christine opens for Lindsey and they perform some of their new songs together and then Lindsey finishes with his solo act

Well, at least we know that we weren't being paranoid or unreasonable. As maddening as this confirmation/information is, we now know where the blame lies and we now know the band is as pusillanimous as ever. If the remaining four had a backbone, they'd give Stevie an ultimatum.
Please, please, please, will Christine and Lindsey release a duet album?!

I don't get why Stevie would commit to a 2 year world tour in the first place. She doesn't want to take the time to put down 3 or 4 songs for a new album, but she wants to go on the road and just sing the same old stuff. Does not make sense to me.

Greed. She and the rest of the band love making money. Touring old songs means she won't have to deal with the stress of working with LB in the studio. Hey, if she doesn't want to make new music, fine. But then the band needs to do it without her. They won't because they are afraid of ostracizing their big money draw/ shawl queen.

You would think with Christine back and Stevie missing her all those years, she would love going into the studio and doing an album. I'm disappointed. If you don't want to record with the rest of the group, then leave. Don't tour with them. It's very frustrating.

This is so frustrating! I love Stevie as she is my main reason for being musically invested in the Fleetwood Mac fold, BUT, girlfriend needs to STEP IT UP !!!! This is not Rocket Science! Mick, John, Lindsey and Christine--- record the album as a foursome. Subsequently, have Stevie come in for 3 weeks, lay down background vocals, and pull 3 OLD songs out of her "demo vault". Suddenly, you have a 12 track album ready for release. Done!! What's the problem? These people are so spoiled, it's ridiculous! How much longer can I spend time, money, and interest on a these brats?
Stevie's contribution to the "new" Fleetwood Mac album would consist of "Julia", "Space Needle", and "What Has Rock N Roll Ever Done For You?". Good Lord, entire countries were built and demolished in the time it takes for these people to get their act together! Yes, Stevie is mostly to blame.

I agree, its difficult to understand this. Stevie won't or can't (the latter in my opinion) contribute to a new album. Yet, is willing to commit to a new World tour.
We saw them in July 2015 and she frankly looked to be going through the motions, you know on autopilot.
She doesn't need the cash, that's for sure...
Maybe she has a solo album planned "the vault 2"...But then she should use Vault songs for a new FWM album.
Confused or what.

I could be mistaken, but I think Stevie's recording contract with Warner/Reprise Records ENDED with the release of 24 Karat Gold, her last solo album. Since she currently doesn't have a record label, her management needs to spend time finding a label for a subsequent solo album. Could a NEW label deal already be in the works for Stevie? Who knows? Why not just record three new songs with The Mac and call it a day? I'm not really craving a 24 Karat Gold Part 2.

I am. I understand everyone's frustration but I really hope Stevie will work on a solo project soon.
Basically confirms what everyone has thought for some time. This band literally goes out of its own way to crap on itself and throw any goodwill/momentum out the window every single time. IMO this goes down with the stupidity of their 1998-2003 lull. They were HUGE again with The Dance and then they just faded away for a few years. I'll never understand why Lindsey and Stevie didn't capitalize on The Dance and re-release BN in 1998 for its 25th anniversary once Chris left and toured as BN. With Christine back though...wow, that was basically the one thing that could generate interest in the band again after a decade of same-old tours. And they HAD the momentum..again! And then boom, no new music, no new plans...just another potential world tour with the same set, same lame stories, and rougher voices.
The four who are interested should finish recording and release the damn album. Stevie's presence isn't exactly going to have them selling millions, so just make the thing and get on with it.
These people are legitimately way too old to be wasting time. Either disband or do SOMETHING.

Perfectly stated. When I read Mick's comments in the RS article today, I was BEYOND FRUSTRATED. What gives? What is this, Whack-A-Mole? One ESSENTIAL member spends YEARS in a SELF IMPOSED EXILE walking dogs and gardening; as soon as enough begging convinces HER to rise from the grave, the HIGH PRIESTESS decides to pull this "Mabel Normand" crap and run off with the mad hatter (Run for your life, Alice, SERIOUSLY?). Then, once we convince these two princesses to get their act together, the "tortured creative genius" develops a sudden case of AGORAPHOBIA, pulls a Great Garbo, and wants to spend time alone recording banging sounds on a bathroom floor. I've invested nearly 40 years consuming this band's product, merchandise, and live performances. Girl, I'm the one who needs a little sympathy! This band actually has a chance to go out in style by creating a great piece of art together in the twilight of their career. Instead, they'd rather behave like spoiled brats. I'm seriously about to toss my platform boots into the bonfire and walk away. Ugh, somebody give me a Xanax!

Will Lindsey really agree to do another massive tour without some sort of new project. I have to admit, I will be disappointed if he goes along with it. The greatest hits tour has been ongoing since 09.
As much as I hate to see things end poorly between them all, it seems like a matter of time before somebody in the band calls BS on the entire thing.
When Christine came back, they should of mapped out a plan and signed on the line. They gave Chris an ultimatum, they should practice what they preach.
I'd rather Stevie just pass on another tour because we all know 6 months into it she will crap all over it as one big hindrance to her own agenda. I'm sure her casino shows will really add to her legacy....lol...

As much as I loved the shows I went to last year, it all seems very sad now.
I can't help but think of Mick's infamous playboy interview from a few years back. Maybe he should of just walked away and moved on. Call it a day.
Now I get why Robert Plant refused to do a full Zep reunion tour, crap like this is a prime example.
This band has turned into a whole lot of foreplay and zero follow through.

She and Lindsey could probably have a mighty strong duet album if they want.
The "Rumours Five" started with Buckingham-Nicks duet joining the fray. Perhaps it was meant to end with a Buckingham-McVie duet. Stevie may regret that one day, but it seems that "regret" or lost opportunity (what could have been) is as much of the FM legacy as the music with this "band."

Is any of this new with this band? I still would bet my life that there will be a new Fleetwood Mac record WITH Stevie. I see this interview as Mick's way to nudge Stevie along. I cant believe she and Lindsey would commit to a 2 year tour but not spend time to finish and record an album? That makes no sense. Mick hints that there will be a huge tour with Stevie but maybe no album with Stevie.
I am sure Stevie and Lindsey are fighting again. However, I cant see the band doing an album without Stevie and then she joining them on a 2 year world tour to promote it. THAT WONT HAPPEN. I see Lindsey definitely pushing for the project. This is Stevie's SAY YOU WILL moment. Maybe if Christine calls her up and sings SAY YOU WILL to her it might get Stevie to join in the album.
None of this is new with the band and they have ALWAYS come back together.

She said they would record, I take her word. Not Mick all I want is money Fleetwood. Unfortunately the rest haven't really had successful solo careers except Nicks, can't blame her for wanting to do other things. I don't blame her for not wanting to b on the road and doing 100 shows, honestly I don't know how any of them do it. That's y I don't come here often, your supposed to b fans but most of you just bitch and I can't stand it. Be happy there alive and still performing well! Not enough love in this world. Isn't this kind of Mick's M.O. though? Stevie drags her feet, Mick/others get frustrated, Mick goes to the press to air his grievances/dirty laundry, Stevie comes around eventually.
Not saying that it will work this time, but remember Mick's "I'm so sad because my band is dead and it's all because of Stevie" interview with Playboy (I think)? A few months later, she came around and the EP/tour was announced.

And Stevie has her own life and career and I think … you know, she just doesn't want to spend the time right now. And we're quietly saddened about that but also I sort of understand.
ok this is crap. this whole "3 year thing" came from a comment Stevie made during the last pre-Chris cash-grab tour and suddenly it has become like a law. Bull.
and really, you just frikkin toured. You haven't changed the ossified set list in forever, (one or two songs does NOT count) how much flippin' rehearsal time does it really take? If you've got mostly the same crew and the same damn band, why on earth do you need months of rehearsals?? Geezus no wonder they look bored with the material by the time they get on the road. Ridiculous. I hate to say this, but it is my fear-- one of them will be dead before they get their sh$t together.

It doesn't take months. Hell, the band I work for had to phone a former guitarist who lives in the NYC area in the middle of the night to fill in for a show seventeen hours later in Cincinnati, and it happened without a hitch (BTW, said guitarist has since rejoined the band).

And why do they need an 18 month tour in the first place. Didn't they make enough money to last their kids, grandkids and lovers this last tour. Do an album and tour for 6 months and then go home.

Fleetwood Mac’s New Album Is Apparently Being Held Up by Stevie Nicks

Read More: Fleetwood Mac's New Album Is Apparently Being Held Up by Stevie Nicks | http://ultimateclassicrock.com/fleetwood-mac-stevie-nicks-new-album/?trackback=tsmclip
It all comes down to Stevie Nicks. She’s the one person keeping Fleetwood Mac from completing their first album since 2003’s Say You Will, the band’s co-founder, drummer Mick Fleetwood, says.
He told Rolling Stone Fleetwood Mac have completed “a huge amount of recorded music,” but “none of it’s with Stevie. Or very little. Some of it is very, very old stuff that Lindsey [Buckingham] maybe did with her years and years ago. We’re not quite sure what will happen with it.”
Fleetwood similarly blamed Nicks for a long-delayed Fleetwood Mac tour that was supposed to start in 2012, crediting an “obsession” with her solo career. Apparently, not much has changed. “She just doesn’t want to spend the time right now,” Fleetwood said. “And we’re quietly saddened about that, but also I sort of understand.”
The ironic part is that Christine McVie‘s belated return to the band led to a huge influx of new material. “I do know that when Christine came back, she came back with a bag full of goods,” Fleetwood added. “She f—ing wrote up a storm. She and Lindsey could probably have a mighty strong duet album if they want. In truth, I hope it will come to more than that. … There really are dozens of songs. And they’re really good. And so you think, “S—, I don’t want it to be that, decades later, when we’re all pushing up daisies, someone hears this stuff and goes, ‘Well, that should have come out!'” So we’ll see.”
Whatever happens with Fleetwood Mac’s studio work, plans are moving forward for another tour, according to Fleetwood. “We’re all dedicated to getting together about a year or so from now and going and doing another two years of touring all over the world, probably,” he said.

I believe that they will do or attempt to do the 2 years tour..it is probably the last chance that they will have to make millions before one or more of them is unable to continue. The promised album has been shelved for more than 2 years now with no additional work completed and Mick now saying there may or may not be an album. .It does not take a genius to ascertain that the final cash grab slog will be it for this band.

I wouldn't mind if Stevie does a solo world tour and FM go on without her... I loved seeing FM but it would be far more enjoyable for me if they were split up, because I far prefer Stevie's solo music and concerts to her stuff with FM.

I'd be okay with it, too. I'd much rather hear new songs and old songs not played in a long time from Christine and Lindsey than hear "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Landslide," and "Gold Dust Woman" for the umpteenth time.

I think you did a setlist of McVie/Buckingham and I was astounded how enticing it looked.

Yeah, and we could do without Stevie's other songs, too, like Sara, Gypsy, Silver Springs, Sisters of the Moon, and Seven Wonders. Blech! More Songbird, Don't Stop, Never Going Back Again, Say You Love Me, Go Your Own Way, Big Love, Go Insane, and the Chain!

We're negative about Stevie, and the band, because she apparently doesn't want to do an album while the others do. For me, that's sad because I really want new music from Christine and because I love the musical interplay between Lindsey, Mick, and John. And, if I'm being honest, Stevie's contributions to Fleetwood Mac have been lacking, with a few exceptions, starting with "Tango..." So, them bending over backwards for the one who has been the weak link is especially frustrating for me.

People (yes even divas) don't flat-out refuse to do things without some sort of reason.
Despite all the positive aspects of a new release, there is something holding Stevie back, which I happen to believe involves her emotions. She's putting off the inevitable to make the band "last" in her own world.
At the same time, I know for a fact she's dreading having to go into the studio with Lindsey again... All one has to do is watch Destiny Rules, and you can see and feel the tension.
That being said, I think the reason is far bigger than these two things.. I don't know what it is, but it has to be pretty major.

It has occurred to me that this might have already happened, yet the band is still waiting for her to come around. As spiteful as Stevie can be towards Lindsey, I just can't see her throwing up a roadblock for Christine to record with Fleetwood Mac again. Not just that, I can't see Christine standing for it. If there is one person left in this world who can put Stevie in her place, it would be Christine McVie. My guess is Chris and Lindsey are just giving Stevie her space, since both of them left the band themselves for more than a decade. I think they both understand what it's like to not be able to not be able to provide for the band when it comes calling. Maybe they feel Stevie is owed her own space. After all, with the exception of Time, Stevie has stood by the band for the past 40 years.
No-one knows exactly what's going on....
Its all conjecture based on the odd interview, and reading a lot in between the lines...
Yes, Lindsey and Christine did give out that there would be a new Album as they had recorded new stuff.
But that was ages ago.
Mick has given information that they have new material but Stevie is holding them back.
But Mick is guilt of saying things for publicity.
IF a new Album comes it will be next year, 40 years on etc etc.

Yes, thank you... Many seem to forget this fact. For the first time in 40 years Stevie doesn't want to make an album, and she is vilified. Where is the hate for Lindsey and Chris when they refused to tour/left the band altogether?
I know the circumstances are different, but I feel like the hatred is imbalanced.

The band continued to operate after LB and CM left. The hate is because the band isn't moving on without her, and for reasons I have yet to comprehend, that is somehow her fault and not theirs.

I don't have any issue with them for leaving because that's what they wanted to do. I would be equally as ok with Stevie doing the same. In fact, Stevie left the band in 1991 as well and that was fine. No one should be in the band if they don't want to be there. Not leaving and forcing them to decide to move on without you or wait for you to get your act together is an entirely different action.
Also Stevie has been against making an album for 13 years and has actively held the band back from doing so multiple times. It was Lindsey's initial desire to do another album following the Say You Will tour, but Stevie was not on board so he went off and did solo albums. They got back together in 2009 and toured with the intention of doing an album but Stevie said no so Lindsey went off and did another solo album. Stevie did as well. They got together again in 2012 with the desire to do an album. They actually recorded several songs without Stevie and were able to get her to agree to sing background vocals on two songs to be included on an EP. The hopes were to use the rest on a future album. They toured on that EP featuring only a 40 year old song from Stevie and zero lead vocals. Then Christine joined and the intention all along was to do an album with her and the first thing that happened was they went in the studio and recorded new songs, without Stevie. Those songs plus the remaining Lindsey songs from 2012 were supposed to form the basis for an album with Stevie that has still yet to materialize due to Stevie's refusal to participate.

I get that Stevie wants a break after a huge world tour that followed on the heels of a previous huge tour. She's tired, she needs to recharge. I think she has always felt the need to be working, working, working over the course of her career (that said, minus a lot of substance abuse she could have a lot more to show for all that work). She's only in recent years really allowed herself to take vacations-- but even then she goes off on tour with Tom Petty, etc. So I'm conflicted by her conflicting messages... she wants time off, she needs time off, yet she herself is the one who can't sit still (the Petty tour, 24k album, etc) on her time off. It sounded in some interviews like she resented that Lindsey and then Chris got long stretches of time away from working to just "live" their lives or whatever they wanted. I don't begrudge her wanting that same thing. On the other hand, she can't entirely blame FM for not getting that sort of time of, because frankly her competitive, driven personality has been a bigger reason that she never got that kind of time off (except for a spell in the 90s when she was just out of it). You can't have it both ways-- you want two full-on careers, yet complain when you never have time to do whatever it is you want. There's really a stark option for curing that-- give up one or the other. She may want both, but if the demands are killing her, she has to make that tough decision. No one else can make it but her. Demanding that the band put everything on hold for her is unrealistic--- did they just stop altogether when Lindsey left? No, they got new players and kept going. Did they stop altogether when Chris left? No, they reformulated themselves as a foursome and kept going. They shouldn't just stop altogether for her either. That's never been the FM way-- not for Greenie, not for Chris, not for Bob, not for anyone. Yeah, she's a far bigger cash cow than the others (though at the time no one knew if the band could survive without Peter). She needs to stop whining and get some cojones and make a decision. You can't always have your cake and eat it too.

I am completely, entirely ready for the post-Stevie Fleetwood Mac. With a number of tracks nearly finished, the foursome can put out an album before the end of this year, and then if Stevie makes up her mind they can do another one next year. (I expect an album recorded without Stevie would actually be better, since there would be great enthusiasm behind all the songs.)
This band didn't always make an album at the rate of one per decade. During the Bob Welch years they did five albums in five years. And they were all great albums! Even the 'White Album' and 'Rumours' came out only two years apart.
If they're dinosaurs, it's time to stop behaving like the lumbering Ultrasauros and to decide instead to act like the nimble little Ornithomimids.

I never thought I'd say but I'm with you. I think I would probably love an album written entirely by Lindsey and Christine. I love both their work, both as members of FM and as solo artists. I think it would be magical. I can get my Stevie fix through her solo work, should she continue to make records that is. The Rumours lineup may be together again but I think the magic or whatever it was that existed between Stevie and the rest of the band has long gone. Yesterday's gone...Yesterday's gone...

Not that it will make a difference, but I wrote a letter to Rolling Stone in response to the Mick interview. (It's the first time I've done something like this.) I complained about the lack of new music, the promise of that music two years ago, the band's desire to go out on extensive oldies tours even without new music, etc. etc.. My hope is they will run the letter. Maybe someone from the band or connected to the band will see it. A long shot, but who knows?

Mille: I’m sorry I respect their music, I think they are amazing, but that music for some reason when I hear it, I want to go on like a rampage and attack anything. Sorry, I don’t know what it is.
