Orlando Nightclub Shooting: Mass Casualties After Gunman Opens Fire in Gay Club

At least 50 people are dead and more than 50 others are wounded after a gunman opened fire and took hostages at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning, police said.
Officials said a hostage situation developed after the gunman stormed the Pulse Nightclub about 2 a.m.
The shooter was identified by several law enforcement sources as Omar Mateen.
He was shot dead about three hours later when a SWAT team entered the club, police said.
The law enforcement sources told NBC News that Mateen was born in New York in 1986 and was listed as living at a residence in Port St. Lucie, about 125 miles south of Orlando.
The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism, officials said.
Mir Seddique, Mateen's father told NBC News, "this has nothing to do with religion." Seddique said his son got angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami a couple of months ago and thinks that may be related to the shooting.
"We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country," Seddique said.
Meanwhile, a man who answered the phone at Mateen's address, Mustafa Abasin, told NBC News: "We are in shock and we are said." He would not say how he knew Mateen, but said he was helping investigators.

"We are looking at probably in the range of 20 [dead], but we don't want to give you an exact figure," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said during a news conference. He said 42 people had been hospitalized.
Mina said a uniformed officer working extra duty exchanged gunfire with the shooter, who was armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and some type of suspicious device.
"The officer engaged in a gun battle with that suspect. The suspect at some point went back inside the club and more shots were fired. This did turn into a hostage situation," Mina said.

Officials made the decision "to go in on a rescue" just after 5 a.m. Mina said, adding that an officer was injured after being shot in the head.
"It appears his helmet saved his life," he said. "So he has an injury to his eye, but it looks like the bullet did hit his helmet."
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the incident "could definitely be classified as domestic terrorism."
However, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks said authorities were also investigating whether international terror was involved, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators arrived on the scene of the shooting at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott was also on his way to Orlando Sunday morning. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families and all those affected by this horrific tragedy. We are a strong and resilient state and we will devote every resource available to assist with the shooting in Orlando," Scott said in a statement.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the shooting by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and requested regular updates, according to a statement from the White House.

Police had previously reported on Twitter that there was a "controlled explosion" at the scene of the shooting. Mina later clarified that the noise was caused by a device intended to distract the shooter.
Revelers described scenes of horror inside the club. One witness told MSNBC that they had to crawl over bodies to escape.
A post to the club's Facebook page at around 2 a.m. warned "everyone get out of Pulse and keep running." Witness video from outside showed dozens of first responders at the scene, and several victims on the ground.
"It was tragic," club-goer Christopher Hansen said. "I wasn't sure if it was the music, because ... it went with the beat almost until you heard just too many shots."
"It was just like — bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang — and that's when you just know chaos is just, it was in turmoil," he added.

Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: "He's coming."
"The next text said: 'He has us, and he's in here with us,'" she told The Associated Press. "That was the last conversation."
Witness Anthony Torres posted to Facebook that he and his friends made it out of the club "just barely as we started to hear fire being shot."
"They are just pulling people out in stretchers loading them up," he said, referring to first responders. "Omg please god let everyone make it."

"People are screaming that people are dead," Torres wrote in another post.
The shooting at the nightclub comes during a series of national celebrations that mark LGBT pride month.
"As soon as we have any information we will update everyone," the club later posted to Facebook. "Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love."

Orlando's gay community is in "utter shock" and after a mass shooting at a gay nightclub early Sunday morning, a local LGBTQ leader said.
Approximately 50 people are dead and 53 wounded after a gunman opened fire and took hostages at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Rob Domenico, a board member of The Center Orlando, an LGBTQ advocacy and support center in the city, said "absolute devastation" is being felt across Orlando's LGBTQ community.
"Fear of the unknown is more overwhelming to us than anything, not knowing who of our loved ones is potentially laying on the floor dead," he said.

More likely the place was a gun free zone and the security and bouncers cant have any guns .I do agree with Mr Trump on letting them carry guns and they could go after and shoot the guy that cause this tragic event..It would been less deaths or none if the security and bouncers or a customer had weapons .Nevermind securing the borders.

welcomechris - so what if Hillary opposed gay marriage at one time? Have you *never* changed your mind before? Have you never grown, learned, evolved? Do you still have the same opinions you did 12 years ago, about *everything*? If so, you might want to get out more and see the world - meet different kinds of people - broaden your horizons.
This isn't about Muslims. That guy was an American citizen, and his religious *freedom* is no lesser than your own. This *is* about easy, unfettered, unmonitored access to military grade assault weapons in this country by anyone with a chip on their shoulder.
No one wants to "ban the guns" as you falsely state. And who the flip cares if you stand with Trump? Have some damn respect and stop making the gruesome death of 50 innocent people about your political beliefs, because this isn't the place for it.

The shocker from the call was that Teddy lives right down the road from the place where the shootings took place. Also he said he's been in that place in the past.

I think this particular assault was about homosexual hate. It was a single man, an American citizen, and it picked on a gay local in a relatively unimportant town.
I think turning this in an occasion to bash on politicians when we have other four, and I say FOUR threads, about that it's really unsensitive guys.
Skip, I'm relieved for your friend too. When France was attacked for a little while it was said that the terrorists could have been in Torino in North Italy, and my bestfriend studies there so I was really worried, I even told her not to go out. Thankfully that was not the case.

I think if someone wants to make a mark with insane violence they will use anything to justify or excuse it, not just a religion. Mainly I would say this was anti-LGBTQ, and second anti-U.S.A. There are hate stokers against both targets; how can they be kept to a further periphery while still allowing for important freedom of speech? I heard there were radical recruiting videos still on Youtube! Are the people behind websites not members of nations?
Well, Reagan urged fellow politicians to work toward a ban on military style assault weapons from the streets. Then they let the Brady Bill which stemmed from an attack on Reagan to lapse. It amazes me how basic common sense checks and regulations are not in place, I think deliberate confusion and fear-mongering have come before teaching gun safety for a long time much to the benefit of only an arms making industry. An offensive device for defensive purposes would more of an extreme last resort you might think but in the U.S. in some parts has become a go to plan somehow. It's just a tool, it is made to serve one purpose, but an almost religion seems to have been made out of it by the unbalanced. There should never be a question though of people losing access to necessary protection or stigmatizing a rural rifle owner. Americans choose freedom yet live in fear often. It's pretty complicated but that Sandy Hook thing was as horrible as this without any religion angle and I can't see an end in sight for my friends and neighbors. There are always going to be people who offer easy answers but I read somewhere that the simple solutions are usually the most transient.

Third, Hillary wants to ban guns. She's said multiple things to make you believe that...
Does anyone believe gun control is going to change a terrorist
point of view? If you do that's absolutely insane.
They can make bombs, what laws are you going to make about that?
Then can stab you with knives, what laws are you going to make about that?
They can run you over with cars, so on and so forth. Outlaw everything?
Are you going to put some controls over people who want to defend themselves
so they can't? And do you really believe laws are going to prevent anyone from
killing if they so desire?
If you are gay you should be less concerned with Christians and our beliefs.
You may not agree with Christian beliefs, but Christians aren't the ones who
are going to or want to kill you. It's that other religion that no Democrat can
seem to name all of us Americans should be concerned with.

How about a temporary ban on AR-15's, just "until we find out what the hell is going on"?

I think this short video is a powerful reminder than nearly every human being on Earth is a multiplicity of different ethnicities and backgrounds.
Before we point fingers at another culture or religion or nationality or race, casting blame about who is better, who is worse, who is extremist, who comes from the better culture - it's important that we all know who *we* are.

And lastly, the only thing I have left to say about what happened in Orlando, shared here from my own Facebook page. I won't be back in this thread to argue with people who refuse to look in the mirror.
I want to take a moment to say something that has been on my mind all day. That shooter in Orlando? His religion doesn't matter. It isn't relevant. He was an American citizen, like you and I, and he had the same religious freedom as the rest of us. The fact remains that anyone with a chip on their shoulder and the money to spend can obtain military grade assault weapons and take their grudges out where ever they please.
This country has a serious problem with hate and intolerance and bigotry. The daughter of our president is called a nigger all over the web and people openly wish for her to be raped at college. There is a sickness pervading our society, and while there are many root causes, every time we single someone out for race, faith, gender, sexuality, or ethnicity we spread that sickness. Making it worse is unfettered access to weapons of war, so everyone who feels victimized can take their pain out on others.
Our government - the real powers that be in Congress - send out their worthless prayers and wishes when instead they could be *doing* something about our gun problem. They could be *doing* something about our health care problem, including mental health care. They could be *doing* something about the economic disparities that plague our county, and they could be *doing* something about the joke that passes for education in this country. They could be *doing* something about the inequality in this country that feeds hatred and resentment. Instead, they do nothing but pander for votes by turning ignorant people against their neighbors and countrymen, and they squander our wealth on wars abroad creating enemies that hate us for our hate. Terrorism has nothing to do with faith - it has everything to do with revenge.
I believe that what you do, what you give, how you love - it all comes back to you. What has America done to deserve these senseless acts of violence directed at people from all walks of life? Look around - watch the news - hell, look at Facebook, and it's clear to see that we are merely getting in return exactly what we, collectively as a nation have put out into the world. Hate begets hate. Be the person you want others to be. Change starts in the mirror.

RE: "the problem that they have let happen under their watch"
Contrary to what Mr. Trump seems to want people to think, the parents of this U.S. born angry blamer who got a military style assault weapon legally came in under President Reagan, not Obama. It was at a time when the U.S. was supplying weapons to the Taliban and Bin Laden. The invasion of Iraq after the WTC and Pentagon attacks was a similar bit of reaction-ism based on misdirected outrage and half-truth telling, please learn.

You can argue about us going to war.
You can argue about gun control laws.
What you can't argue about is that under this administration
things have gotten worse. We paid in blood for territories that
were given back. The sames places where these terrorists are
now waging a war against us.
Let's stay current. If our leaders can't call it for what it is,

anyone think that they're going to do something about it?

As I said before.Ordinary Joe or Jane does not need semi automatic guns like the SIG Sauer MCX , Glock 17 used in Orlando or a AK47 and any other type of machine guns which I do agree with the Pres on that with the ban on them.On the other hand people should not loose their rights owning their regular shot guns as long they get a mental health check when buying one.The problem today is nobody gets checked and some do show flags when checked and get ignored and get away with it like this A Hole that murdered these people and injured others.

For someone not afraid you surely are acting afraid
Terrorists can never scare me. I don't give into fear and I definitely AM NOT AFRAID.
I have not seen anyone even remotely talk about taking guns away from anyone.
You cant board a plane with a bottle of mouthwash. But you can be a known terrorist on watch lists and go buy military assault weapons.
You cant make this stuff up. If someone is mentally ill, should they be allowed to buy guns? Or is it denying mentally ill people their constitutional rights?
No one is more conservative than me. I am a police officer with multiple guns. But there is common sense. A bottle of mouthwash is not going to kill anyone on a plane. But if government is tasked with protecting it's citizens against enemies foreign and domestic then common sense should be considered.
Our country has a wonderful thing in the 2nd amendment. It allows citizens to protect their life and property and carry guns. You also can hunt. The creator of the AR-15 created it for war and military. Its not for hunting or needed to defend your house. Its design is to kill as many people on the battlefield as quickly as possible.
Now ask yourself. Do you want terrorists to legally purchase these guns? Do you want mentally ill people to buy these guns. There is a 3 day waiting period for firearm purchases. But there is gun show loop holes and online loop holes. The mentally deranged Colorado movie theater shooter bought his assault rifle through this loop hole.
I think its reasonable to close these loop holes without violating anyone's constitutional rights.
Why stop at assault rifles. Why not let citizens to carry other weapons of war? A grenade launcher can kill equal numbers of people.
Your average patrol police officer does not have access to nor carries an assault rifle. However, he or she responds to shootings with assault rifles. There is no match. Engaging someone with a hand gun against a rifle is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Look at the amount of police officers killed and mowed down by assault rifles over the past several years.
There is seriously something wrong with a government that forbids its law abiding citizens to carry shampoo or mouthwash on a plane but allows terrorists to buy weapons of war legally.

1. I am not afraid. Only because I know Who is in control.
2. I'm kind of doubting that one.
3. No, iamnotafraid.
4. The problem with gun control is so easy to explain.
Truth is truth no matter what side of the argument you fall on.
And this is truth. If we give in to common sense it won't end there.
Gun control and taxes are much the same. If you give, they'll
take more and more - and more. Ever heard of a temporary tax?
I don't own those type of weapons you are talking about.
And I don't hunt, unless you're talking varmints. But I do
have guns for that and the protection of my family and self.
I could go on. But we are to avoid foolish and ignorant disputes.
Knowing that they generate strife.

I think the way Canada has handled the AR-15 is good, it's not impossible to get but there are regulations concerning it. It was used as a hunting rifle apparently in the past but was considered a fairly poor choice but still functional as one. If the same basic weapon was made to look plainer and with wood accents I bet it would be less scary, but the fact that it was advertised with some slogan about 'renewing your man card' sort of shows that it looking so 'serious firepower' means as much as the actual quality of it. Oh well. The fanatics are the most motivated and there are extreme people on both sides while most find themselves in the middle and shouted down.
I try to be a (lower c) Christian but I feel all the praying and angel stuff really doesn't fit with this thing that's happened in Orlando. If it means something to the people directly effected that's different but it mostly makes me think about these guardian angels not being there for some. Maybe Oprah or whoever would say those people must have chosen to be sacrifices or something in some weird predestination belief system and drawing positive or negative things to yourself, and I've heard that said even about Jewish holocaust victims... not for me. I do know there is a lot we don't know but invisible angels saving some and not others is just strange to me. Prayers after a tragedy need some more explanation, but it seems to be an almost universal reaction from many to simply say 'pray' , maybe it makes them feel less helpless or expresses sadness to them?
