Luke Steele walking on a dream in LA

Simon Collins - The West Australian on June 3, 2016, 6:56 am
Luke Steele walking on a dream in LA

Luke Steele has written a song with Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey Buckingham for the next Empire of the Sun album.

Perth musician Luke Steele was toiling away on the third Empire of the Sun album in Los Angeles recently when he heard Paul McCartney was recording at the same studio.

“I happened to get to the front door and Paul McCartney held the door open for me and said ‘After you, mate’,” Steele says from Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, where he met the polite Beatle.

The Empire of the Sun and Sleepy Jackson frontman arrived prepared, giving Macca a limited edition vinyl copy of Empire’s 2008 debut Walking on a Dream.

“It was a pretty surreal day,” Steele laughs. “It took me about three hours, no exaggeration, to stop shaking.”

Meeting McCartney isn’t the only reason the 36-year-old muso — who resides in LA and New Zealand with his wife Jodi and kids Sunny Tiger, 7, and Cruz, 2 — is living the dream.

The title track of that debut album is currently riding high on the US charts, eight years after being released on the same week Sunny Tiger was born, thanks to the blissful electro-pop song featuring in a Honda car commercial.

“It’s so great,” Steele says. “We’ve lived here (in LA) for years now and you’d hear it in elevators, clubs and cabs but it never got the commercial radio play.”

American radio stations have finally embraced Walking on a Dream, which topped US Billboard’s dance club charts last month.

Steele has been in hot demand for interviews and he joined Empire band mate Nick Littlemore for a memorable daytime TV performance on The Ellen Show in April.

“Like the Beatles, it’ll last forever,” Steele says of Walking on a Dream. “You can put it on 50 years for now.”

Empire of the Sun have gone for the same classic feel on the follow-up to 2013 album Ice on the Dune.

Steele and Littlemore are putting the finishing touches on their third album, written and recorded with Littlemore’s Pnau band mate Peter Mayes and collaborator Donnie Sloan.

Empire of the Sun pair Nick Littlemore, left, and Luke Steele performed on The Ellen Show in April.
The foursome worked at Henson and the Empire Compound in LA, as well as Island Studios in Hawaii where Kanye West recorded 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak.

Working in Hawaii, where around half the album was born, created “this whole summer breeze, blue wave” vibe according to Steele, who adds that “it’s definitely a lot more relaxed and oceanic” than Ice on the Dune.

The yet-to-be-named album, pencilled in for October, features a very special guest — Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey Buckingham.

Steele explains that when he and Jodi have “late night music parties” at their Santa Monica or Coromandel Peninsula homes to a soundtrack of classic pop and rock, he often emails his manager asking for a hook-up with one of his heroes.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the time they never get back,” he laughs. “I’ve always wanted to work with my favourite guitarist Lindsey Buckingham so I reached out.

“He got back and said ‘Fleetwood Mac are off the road, I’m in LA, I’d love to come down’.”

Buckingham joined Empire of the Sun in their Downtown LA Compound where he played guitar and sung harmonies on a track called To Her Door, which the 66-year-old rock god also co-wrote.

“It’s such a classic song,” Steele gushes. “It’s just been a dream come true.”

The dream run continues for the star, who will soon start work on the first Sleepy Jackson album since 2006 with drummer Malcolm Clark and guitarist Ben Witt, plus LA session players and Rihanna, M.I.A and Santigold producer John Hill.

“I’ve been touring Ice for the past two and a half years, it’s time to push some new music out there,” he adds. “Get ready.”

 wrong. (and, why is solo in quotation marks?)

people expressed their "hate" for me because they thought Lindsey may have gotten tired of endless wait and is maybe releasing a solo album.

and you know why *i* hate hate hate this wait and delay of FM album that Nicks has been holding up for years now? because i want Lindsey to get back to his solo work! (well, that and i want to finally hear those songs that he and Chris recorded together!) i would have LOVED if he released a solo album this year instead of doing something here and there while they are all apparently unsuccessfully trying to talk Nicks into new FM album. it frustrates me to no end that in his highly prolific phase we are all forced to sit and wait for YEARS!

Lindsey released solo albums in 2006, 2008, and 2011. we could have had 2 more by now if there was no endless FM album wait. he certainly recorded double album worth of songs for FM since 2012.

None of the recent solo material for any of the 3 can even compare.

love it, that we are actually having a discussion here - thank you for that!

can you give examples of what you mean?

Lindsey's SWS material is exquisite and much better than majority of his FM material, excluding his few songs on Rumours, some Tusk songs and most of his SYW songs (which was really solo material anyway). people familiar with In The Meantime say it's great.

i'm not very familiar with Stevie's solo material, but from what i've heard her really good solo material was just in the early 80s and it was all downhill from there. so i'm curious to hear your opinion. from what i can see Stevie seems to be the only one of the 3 that fits your description.

so while Lindsey is one of the apparently rare artists who is not resting on his past glories and gets better and better as the time goes on, and Christine seems to be steadily good over time, only Stevie seems to have had her best songwriting phase squarely back in the early 70s and then possibly some solo work in the early 80s.

from all that, FM album written by Lindsey-Christine would be probably musically much better than if there are Stevie's contributions too. and possibly that's the main reason Stevie has been holding back the album - feeling she's been creatively blocked for decades while Lindsey and now Christine have been creatively growing. that's seems to also be one of Lindsey's speculations why she is so reluctant to join them.

Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele Talks Gun Control, New Album, Lindsey Buckingham & Wendy Melvoin Collaborations

[excerpt]

Most exciting, however, is that the album will feature two American rock icons, one of which is Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham. Considering that “I’ll Be Around,” from Empire’s 2013 sophomore effort Ice on the Dune, basically sounded like an outtake from Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage album, this new collaboration makes perfect sense.

“One of my favorite things to do is sit with my wife, drink white wine, and just listen to records once the kids have gone to bed. And I always end up emailing my manager and saying, ‘I wanna work with this person,’” Steele chuckles. “Nine times out of 10, they never get back to me. But Lindsey got back to us and said, ‘I love the band; I wanna come down to the studio.’ We jammed for about six hours, and then he came back the next day and we wrote this amazing song, ‘To Her Door.’”

Empire of the Sun Tap Lindsey Buckingham, Wendy Melvoin & Bowie Band Members for 'Two Vines' Album

Australian glitter dance duo Empire of the Sun recruited some heavy hands for their upcoming third album, Two Vines. The album, due on Astralwerks on Oct. 28, will feature contributions from Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, Wendy Melvoin from Prince's Revolution band and two members of David Bowie's Blackstar band, pianist Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre.

The first single from the album, "High and Low," is due out Wednesday. It was recorded in Hawaii and Los Angeles and co-produced by members Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes (Killers, Sia) and in a statement announcing the follow-up to 2013's Ice on the Dune Littlemore said, "We always saw Empire as a movie... The whole concept was based around childhood fantasies; being in bed and staring at the posters on your wall, whether they were monster movies or outlandish rock stars or pieces of art. We always wanted to be one of those posters on a child’s wall that had so much imagination locked into it, a kind of invitation that pushes you over the edge into dream world. With this record, it’s time to take that next step."

Lindsey Buckingham Is Keeping Himself Busy

Stevie Nicks is apparently holding up any new Fleetwood Mac music from coming out, but that isn’t stopping Lindsey Buckingham from working with other artists.

Buckingham recently collaborated with Empire of the Sun, an Australian electronic music duo, on their new album Two Vines which is due out October 28th. Also featured on the album are pianist Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre who were both part of the studio band on David Bowie’s final album Blackstar.

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham was recruited by Empire Of The Sun to feature on their new LP, according to Rolling Stone.

Additional artists featured on the new album titled Two Vines, include Wendy Melvoin (from Prince's Revolution band), and David Bowie collaborators Henry Hey (piano) and Tim Lefebvre (bass).

"There was an image we talked about very early on with this record, before we wrote the title track, 'Two Vines,' and that was this image of a modern city overtaken by jungle, almost like mother nature taking back the planet," added Nick Littlemore. "All the buildings will turn back to sand. All it will be is nature again. We wanted to make something that reflected the beauty of that, and the wisdom that plants can give us about living harmoniously on this beautiful planet."

How Buddha and Lindsey Buckingham inspired Empire of the Sun's new LP
'Two Vines' is due out Oct. 28
BY MADISON VAIN • @TWEETSINVAIN

Posted September 7 2016 — 11:42 AM EDT

Australian psych-pop weirdos Empire of the Sun had a spiritual awakening before they began writing for their third record. “Buddha was revealed to me,” says multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Littlemore. “And the theme really rushed through me: I wanted to write about plants and love and the planet.”

To achieve this vision, Littlemore and bandmate Luke Steele recruited Fleetwood Mac frontman Lindsey Buckingham, Prince’s onetime protegée Wendy Melvoin, and David Bowie collaborators Henry Hey and Tim Lefebvre for a result that’s more akin to the interstellar psychedelia of their 2008 debut than 2013’s more Top 40-radio-baiting Ice on the Dune.

Here, Littlemore and Steele take EW behind their trippy vision.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When you began work on this album, did the two of you set any goals for the music?
STEELE: The beginning and end of everything is that we’re always trying to write great songs. It’s the patchwork of the Empire. At this point in our lives, we wanted to make a record that’s more bare and honest. We want to get to that point where you put the record on and feel like we’re talking to you.

Ice On The Dune was set in the 31st century. Does Two Vines have an equally defined setting?
LITTLEMORE: I had a profound experience about a year and a half ago. Buddha was revealed to through meditation and that really affected me. The theme really rushed through me: I wanted to write about plants and love and the planet. We had the idea of an image where the future of the world would be New York City, or any of these great cities, but completely covered in vines.

What was it like working with Lindsey Buckingham?
STEELE: I have these music nights with my wife where we sit back and listen to old records, and I always email my manager saying, “Can you get in touch with this guy, that guy,” my heroes. So we reached out to Lindsey and it just so happened he’d just got off the road with Fleetwood Mac and was in L.A. He said he loved the band and would love to come to the studio.
LITTLEMORE: Fleetwood Mac had been a very strong influence on our lives, but you know, sometimes you meet these heroes of your and then they let you down. But he fell right in — he felt like a member of the band.

I understand you have a unique producing-style.
LITTLEMORE: It’s sort of similar to when you were at school trying to make a document look old so you burn the edges. We run the music through all this old gear. Sometimes we say, “Oh, I don’t even know if the audience notices.” But even if they don’t notice sonically, maybe they feel something different — maybe it touches them in a nostalgic way.
STEELE: It has so much more of a soul, a bit more nourishment, than modern gear. It’s like how I only buy old guitars now. When you play an old guitar, it has so many unfinished songs to get out of it.

Have you considered how you will present the album? Staging and costume-design have always been so huge for the band.
LITTLEMORE: It’s a lot more minimal. After my experience, I’m wearing the Buddhist color, the orange, and little else. I didn’t want to wear beads or any adornment. Luke is very very basic blue silk. He still has a headpiece but we’re trying to pull it back toward the essential.
STEELE: It’s like you’re walking into the jungle and you have one garment that you put on. We’re going to simplify the process — but having said that we’ll probably end up with pyrotechnics and animals on stage.

After the 2013 album, there were rumors of a rift between the two of you. How are you now?
LITTLEMORE: There always is with creative partnerships, especially with two individuals as intense as us, but there is a greater good here. The music has always risen higher than our egos, which is amazing, because our egos are really high.
STEELE: It’s a really strange relationship, but when it works, there’s nothing like it in the world.

“Walking On A Dream” cracked into the Billboard Hot 100 this year, eight years after it originally released. How does that feel?
LITTLEMORE: Where my grandmother lived in Sydney, you could walk down a hill to the harbor. I did this one day and found a bottle, and there wasn’t a message in it, but there was a fish in it. I let the fish go but thought, in my imagination, that the fish had been living in the bottle for years. Maybe a song is something you send out and it comes back with another story added to it, and then another one, another one, and another one. Everything you ever do, it’s going to come back in some way.

Okee, he co-wrote 'To Her Door'

That is a relief because that new single sounds awful in my ears. And I couldn't hear him on it.

Three years ago I saw them live at the Lowlands festival, but couldn't bear the hollowness and self absorbed stage act. let's hope Lindsey actually added some depth, although those lyrics do not put me in a feeling of much confidence about that....

hearing him on this though made me even more curious and salivating to hear new Chris-Lindsey Mac songs. but i hope they are not nearly as soft poppy as this. although who knows, they might be, he was hinting that he was kinda going in more mellow direction with FM music, unlike solo.

Songs We Love: Empire of the Sun, 'To Her Door'

September 29, 201610:00 AM ET by Megan Buerger NPR.

http://www.npr.org/2016/09/29/495809822/songs-we-love-empire-of-the-sun-to-her-door

When Fleetwood Mac released Rumours in 1977, the band's lush instrumentals and melancholic harmonies reignited an obsession with bright, shining California pop. Decades later, modern folk bands like Mumford and Sons, Best Coast and Haim are still channeling the same bittersweet chords and joyful choruses.

Empire of the Sun is the latest group to pay tribute to Fleetwood Mac's lush legacy, but the Australian synth duo is far from folksy. It's better known for playing dance-music festivals in exotic Space Age costumes that feel, from a distance, almost like Cirque du Soleil. And yet, its forthcoming album, Two Vines, features a glistening collaboration with longtime Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham called "To Her Door."

"When you've got the undeniable, magical aura of Doctor Buckingham, things blossom," Luke Steele — one half of Empire of the Sun — tells NPR. Both he and bandmate Nick Littlemore consider Buckingham one of their heroes. "We jammed like we were in high school and it came together almost instantly."

The song captures a couple's dialogue the day after a big argument. One partner wakes up surprised and anxious, Steele says, eager for reconnection. "He says, 'Hey, good morning, what happened, can I come around and talk?'" The lyrics convey that desire: "I feel better when we're together / I know it's simple but I don't care / I try to say the things to make up for the mess I've caused."

Sonically, "To Her Door" reflects Fleetwood Mac's warmest records — such as "Hold Me" or "Gypsy," which overflow with richness. Steele says that when he and Littlemore conceptualized a direction for this album, they were drawn to an image of vines that grew out of the ground and into cities, wrapping around buildings and cars until they overtook the urban world. He couldn't get the image out of his head. When they traveled to Hawaii to record at Honolulu's Island Sound Studios, where Kanye West recorded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the tropical, breezy setting cemented the return-to-nature concept.

"In Hawaii, our hotel on the beach had a giant banyan tree that stretched from the lawn into the living room. It felt like being a part of nature again," Steele says. In an effort to carry that vibe into the studio, he opted to use more analog equipment to return to the way music used to be recorded. It helped, of course, to have Buckingham in the room, an old-school guy who, arguably more than any living artist, is responsible for that lush, breezy sound.

"That's why working with him was beyond words, really," Steele says. "You're not just working with a great guitarist or producer, you're working with classic heritage. He's not just a genius, but a genius of feeling. It's his gift. And I'm so grateful we got to share in it."

Today, alt-electro pioneers Empire Of The Sun released “To Her Door,” a song they recorded with Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, who contributed guitar and backing vocals. The track – which is from Empire of the Sun’s new album, Two Vines. ” “To Her Door” can be streamed on Spotify HERE.

Empire Of The Sun will perform on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” next Tuesday, October 4. Two Vines will be released on October 28 via Astralwerks. The pre-order is underway HERE. Beginning today, fans who pre-order the digital album will instantly receive “To Her Door” plus “High & Low,” “Two Vines” and Manny Marroquin’s remix of the band’s Platinum hit “Walking On A Dream.”

NPR praised Empire Of The Sun’s “glistening collaboration with longtime Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham…Sonically, ‘To Her Door’ reflects Fleetwood Mac’s warmest records — such as “Hold Me” or “Gypsy,” which overflow with richness.”

“‘To Her Door’ started with us just improvising in the studio with Lindsey,” explains Nicholas Littlemore, who co-pilots Empire Of The Sun alongside Luke Steele. “After the first jam, which was probably about an hour, we turned up his parts and there were so many beautiful gems. You could hear all of the years of playing that he’s done with Fleetwood Mac coming through. That was quite early on, so that was a big inspiration for us.”

I just looked up the UK, Australia and US singles charts to see if To Her Door had charted. Nothing. I guess it will be appearing in next week's charts.
btw- each of these charts: what a complete pile of steaming sh!t. Boy, its a long time since I paid any attention to singles charts.

Empire Of The Sun make magic with Fleetwood Mac, Prince and David Bowie star musicians

Kathy McCabe, National Music Writer, News Corp Australia Network

[excerpts]

And most famously, they asked Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham if he would join them on the Two Vines album.

Littlemore self-deprecatingly suggests these musical legends agreed to lend their talents to the Australian duo’s third record because they are “thoroughly nice people”.

So Melvoin, Buckingham and pianist Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre, who were members of David Bowie’s Blackstar band, surely would have heard of these eccentric, creative Australians.

“I think they did it out of the kindness and generosity of their hearts. I do. I think (Wendy and Lindsey) are both still so fascinated by music. They still love it,” Littlemore says.

“Lindsey would hear a lot of compliments (in our music) I would imagine because Fleetwood Mac was the first show I ever went to, at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, and we’ve never tried to hide the fact we were massively influenced by them.

“I believe the first press release about Empire said we were Daft Punk meets Fleetwood Mac.”

Two Vines is a reconciliation for these two vastly different men. Littlemore laughs when asked if Buckingham’s presence in the studio put them on their best behaviour.

The friction between the pair has more to do with fighting for their respective creative corners than it does with ego or the business of show business.

But he agrees they could have done with a referee when it came to choosing the songs which made the cut from the list of 70 tracks they wrote for Two Vines.

“We don’t really have one, which is probably annoying, it would be good to have someone impartial,” Littlemore says.

“It could be Lindsey but he’s already given us so much and I wouldn’t want to burden him with 70 songs and say ‘which one?’

“And we can’t compare our tiny, minuscule squabbles with the making of Rumours. What right do we have to ever have an argument? If they can do it

Faster Louder How Empire Of The Sun learned to stop worrying about EDM and love Mother Nature

by Jules LeFevre 24 October 2016 [excerpt]

http://fasterlouder.junkee.com/empire-sun-learned-stop-worrying-edm-love-mother-nature/867855

Were there any surprises in recording Two Vines?

Well, maybe the collaborators were a surprise. It was wonderful to work with Lindsey Buckingham. I’ve been working with Henry Hey and Tim Lefebvre for quite a while now and it just felt very natural to bring them into the fold. Lindsey, however, you never think you’re going to work with someone of that calibre. It’s crazy. If someone said to me today, “How does it feel to see your name on a thing next to his on songwriting credits,”…it’s bizarre. But if you meet him it feels completely natural. He’s the nicest person. He’s a lovely, lovely guy. He brought his son to the studio. We all just hung out and made music together. It was crazy. It was beautiful.

How was that introduction get made? How did he get brought in?

We send out a lot of emails out to people we’d like to work with. Some come back, some are too busy, and occasionally someone will come all the way through, and he just drove down. We had a studio in Downtown Los Angeles, which looks a bit like Mexico, in old rag trade building. And he just walked in one day with his guitar, and there he was: Lindsey Buckingham.

I’m glad you brought it up cause it’s a real dream team of collaborators on this album. There’s Lindsey, but also Wendy from the Revolution.

Yeah, Wendy came in right at the end. We were working in Jim Henson’s studio which was actually built by Charlie Chaplin and then Henson bought it off him and now it’s the Muppets, basically forever, I guess. Wendy has had a studio there for about 15, 20 years. She was in the building and maybe she liked us or something so we ended up in her room saying “Hi, we have this song, it’s kind of good but we can’t quite …” We left the song with her, we hadn’t quite finished it. She came down and she said “Come upstairs, I have something.” She prefaced it by saying, “I wouldn’t put something on here if it didn’t feel it right, I wouldn’t do anything …” But she played this thing to us. It was just wonderful.

What track is that?

It’s on a song called ‘Ride’.

Do you have any particular favourites?

The song I wrote with Lindsey, or rather, we wrote with Lindsey called ‘To Her Door’, I think is my favourite song on the record. I always like the gushier ones, I’m quite emotional like that but that one, for me, is really special. It’s simple, you know?

There’s a big vein of simplicity on Two Vines. Which I think is really nice. Even though I loved Ice On The Dune but it was definitely… a volcano of new sounds.
It was, it was little bit volcanic.

What’s been the biggest evolution for Empire Of The Sun?

We’ve been fortunate enough to reach people on a large scale and now for the first time I feel like I have something to say, and I want to tell people to look out for the planet. I know it’s not a new message but it’s really important to me. That’s the biggest thing is that I’m seizing the moment to actually talk about something important and it doesn’t matter what country we’re in, there’s always some ****ed up **** the government’s doing to the planet.

it looks like To Her Door completely failed to chart....anywhere.
I guess it wasn't really a proper release as it didn't have a video- maybe that would have made a big difference. I guess High and Low was the proper 'lead-out' single and at least that went top-20 in Australia.

The track wasn't quite what I was expecting. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't thrilled either.

I'll maybe give this album a try, but from what I've heard, I don't like them too much.

Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele Says Working with Lindsey Buckingham Was Magical Experience

http://kwbe.com/abc_classicr/empire-of-the-suns-luke-steele-says-working-with-lindsey-buckingham-was-magical-experience-abcid35799791/

BY ABC News Radio | October 28, 2016

Lindsey Buckingham has kept a pretty low profile since Fleetwood Mac‘s On with the Show world tour wrapped up late last year, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer does make a guest appearance Australian electronic music duo Empire of the Sun‘s new album, Two Vines, which was released on today. Buckingham contributed a shimmering guitar solo to song called “To Her Door,” which he also is credited with co-writing.

Empire of the Sun singer/guitarist Luke Steele tells ABC Radio that working with Buckingham in the studio was “just like magic,” describing him as an “infinite magician, just sort of pulling tricks out of the air.”

Steele adds of the experience, “Notes would just appear, and things fly in the room, and a dove disappears.”

You can check out “To Her Door” at Empire of the Sun’s official VEVO YouTube channel.

That's hardly true. Some of his work outside of FM has been his best work.

Michele

100% agreed!

Nobody cares about his work outside of FM. I hate your thread title also.

You obviously haven't listened to his back-catalogue of solo albums. He is one of the finest musicians around, and his solo work easily matches up to his work with Fleetwood Mac.

Listen to the "Out Of The Cradle" album for example.

If you're not interested in his solo work then why view the "Lindsey Buckingham" section of this forum?
