I know this is not a favorite album among fans, but it's not that bad. I think it contains some fairly decent songs.

Here are the songs I like most:

1. Welcome to the room Sara
(please don't kill me!!!)

2. Isn't It Midnight
(I didn't like it too much at first, but it has grown on me).

3. Seven Wonders
(Not Stevie's best work with FM... But its an OK song, I suppose).

4. Big Love
(I prefer the accoustic version from the Dance).

5. Little Lies
(I really do not know why I like it).

I love pretty much every track on TITN with the exception of "Family Man" and "WISYA".

Of the Rumours lineup, this album is most definitely my least favorite. Probably because it doesn't feel like a genuine collaborative effort like the previous four albums. It's like 75% Lindsey, 20% Chris and 5% a pathetic Stevie. :sorry:

That being said, I can tolerate "Little Lies", "Caroline", "Tango", and "Welcome To The Room, Sara"...but that's about it.

Little Lies is by far the best song on the album. It's the only tune that really offers a classic Mac GROUP sound. Everyone has a part to play on it.

Big Love is pretty impressive, too, but it sounds and feels like an LB solo tune.

Tango was an album where they definitely chose the right songs for singles. My favorites:

1. Little Lies
2. Seven Wonders
3. Big Love

Beyond the singles, I also love "You and I," which I know a lot of fans dislike.

Better than some of their later releases? Are you saying theres an album that came after Tango that is better than it?

It embarrasses Behind The Mask
It knocks Time into oblivion
It kicks Say You Will for sh!t

It's what Mirage could have been
It's more complete than Tusk
It has more sparkle and energy than Fleetwood Mac
It is comparable to Rumours

imo

I'm one of the VERY few people that like Time. I have to respectfully disagree with you; it is not a better album than Fleetwood Mac. In fact, I think The White Album is their most flawless release. That's just how I feel, though.

I think the album it kills the most is SYW. I can't enjoy that one at all. It is very weak and had poor production. That fact that it didn't include any controbution from the British Songbird, only made it worse. An album without her is not the same. :sorry:

I'll come back to rank later, but I gotta say this is really a favorite album of mine. It started as a favorite cassette of mine on my Walkman at the University of South Florida, where I saw them live for the first time. It's definitely of its time but I still love listening to the record and the CD downloads. It'll always loom large in my Mac love.

I wish Time was Billy, Bekka and Christine. Christine was correct about the chemistry of the band being off.

But then again, she's Christine. She's been in the band since 1969.

I don't care for very much on Tango. It has almost no Fleetwood Mac sound and is a Lindsey solo album with Christine and Stevie appearing on it. Unlike a classic Mac sound, its pure 80s synth pop. Stevie was there a total of 3 weeks according to Mick. She flew off the wall and threatened to blackmail the group because she was barely on the album. Then you get the cheezy Stevie quick added padding like on Family Man "i am what I am in cheezy 80's sound. Stevie's demos were flown in from the Rock A Little tour and she could not even write to contribute 3 songs and borrowed Seven Wonders from Sandy Stewart. Tango is also the worst album cover of any Mac album IMHO.

****getting off my soapbox now*****

Having said that to get off my chest there are a few good songs and Christine makes this album worthy. Unfortunately we have to wait to Behind the Mask to hear her play keyboards again. There are a few parts here and there where her playing shines on this album though.

Favorite track: Isn't it Midnight - pure rocker that this album needed more of. Lindsey's solo is amazing and his backing vocals take the song to another level. This is one of Christine's best songs ever!

Tango In The Night - a great song by Buckingham. Its creative with surprising pounding guitar work at the end. One of Lindsey's best songs from the 80's

Little Lies - what a cute little song that made the perfect pop single. No wonder it charted all the way at #4. To hear all 3 singers featured on a Mac song on Tango is extremely rare. One of the major reasons I like this song; Group effort .....hello!!!!

Those are my top 3. I also like Everywhere mostly because its a different and great song live. Mystified is also a worthy McVie effort.

The best thing from Tango were the videos. Big Love - awesome to finally see them all together again. Seven Wonders - just beautiful Little Lies - pure magic

I wish the Mac would have not played it so safe on this album. There was tremendous pressure to make it commercially successful. They should have kept the pop hits waiting after showcasing the Mac was back. I wish Isn't it Midnight was the first single just to blow everyone away. Ahhh Hello....the Mac is back! Then they could have released the top 40 pop hits. It would have given the Mac some credibility to rock critics instead of embracing the current pop 1987 sound. That is why it never charted past #7 at its peak. Its 1987 pop songs were not stand outs or unique. The best rock albums hold up because they are daring and have a unique sound. Most of these songs could have easily been added to Lindsey's Go Insane and no one would have even noticed.

Big Love
Seven Wonders
Tango in the Night
Little Lies
Isn't it Midnight

From a live perspective, I enjoy Everywhere quite a bit too (both the 1987-90 and 1997/2014-15 versions)....but on the album it's a clunker.

Family Man is cringeworthy and When I See You Again was/is/and always will be a hot mess. Stevie's voice is horrible, the production is brutal, and the lyrics...holy hell. She stares at the stairs...wassamattabaaaabay....

When you break them down to guitar and drums, there are some good songs on "Tango In The Night", but as is the case with MOST music from the mid/late 80's, the OVER-PRODUCED 80's synthesizer sound makes the album feel so dated. I find it unlistenable. The great thing about Fleetwood Mac is that their albums like "Rumours" "Tusk" and "The White Album" have stood the test of time so well. The 1980's brought such overproduced music, that most of it sounds ridiculous today. This is also the case with most parts of Stevie's "Rock A Little" and "The Other Side Of The Mirror". I'd like to hear some of these songs rerecorded with less heavy production and cheesy 80's synthesizers. Again, it just all sounds so DATED to the 2016 ear.

'Everywhere', 'Seven Wonders' and 'Little Lies' are the truly great songs in the album. I really like every song though. Really. Even those Stevie songs that always get dumped on. I dig 'em.

"Little Lies" is probably the only song I really dig just the way it is. I'm not really a big fan of the 80's sound prevalent on Tango but for whatever reason it wins me over here.

"Big Love" is also a good song but I think I do like the version on The Dance better. Still, I like it.

"Seven Wonders" is nice, despite Stevie's shot voice.

That's probably it, those three there. This is just not my album. I could've loved "Everywhere" with different production. I like the stripped down, simple and sweet version I try to hear in my head. "Isn't It Midnight" is sound but it still sounds like a workout video soundtrack to me. Plus I don't quite like the way Chris' voice sounds here or on "Mystified." Though I don't hate that song either.

I think Chris does the best on this album, unfortunately she's attempting sounds that aren't my favorite things to listen to. I want to like Lindsey's F. Synth Fitzgerald thing more than I do. Stevie, oy.

Lindsey and Christine killed it on this album. Stevie's songs were not that great. Seven Wonders is okay and Welcome To The Room Sara is okay. When I See You Again is awful, completely unbearable. Why didn't they use If You Were My Love on Tango instead of Stevie's subpar songs.

Lindsey's songs are great, my favorite is Family Man

Christine's songs are great. Everywhere could use a little less glitter, but I still love it. Mystified is great too.

I just had a funny memory of Tango. When Big Love was released many thought it was Stevie grunting on the song. Everyone wanted to know who was the female grunting. The band put out a statement it was not Stevie grunting but Lindsey's voice sped up.
I remember the world premier of Big Love on MTV and the 2 hour Mac Attack leading up to the video. Long live the 1980's!

Likewise. The song has been an object of fascination to me since I first heard it.
I love a lot of TITN except the Linds stuff. In the summer of 1987 I was driving across the country to visit family and 7 Wonders was all over the radio. I bought the album on cassette and spent the entire drive back, 14 hours, listening to 7 Wonders and then flipping it to get WISYA. And those 2 tunes brought me right back to Stevie and FM for good

Been mulling it over for a few days, it's hard for me to rank because this really is an album I listened to over and over in my college days.

But gonna take a shot at it. I think a couple of things have changed. I have appreciation for Seven Wonders now that I don't think I had at the time.

Seven Wonders
Mystified
Big Love

Great selections! (applause) Welcome to the Room.... Sara is probably my favorite Stevie song from TITN. I think Christine has something with Isn't It Midnight, probably her strongest song on TITN. As for Lindsey... Well, I only ever really liked Big Love, but I can tolerate Family Man more now then when it was new. You and I, part II has taken alot of flack over the years and probably not one of Stevie's finest songs but I think its pretty good.

Welcome To The Room...Sara

I was 7 when Tango was released and at the time I had a pretty fabulous fascination with Scarlett O'Hara - so, it was like putting my two favorite things together. I certainly didn't understand what the song was about or any of the context but, I loved it and still do. Ive lurked on here for years and just finally got ahold of my password again just to show this song some love.

I do love the rest of the record and its probably FM at it's most pop minded and low key. Cant wait for the inevitable rerelease. Hopefully we will get a good rendition of "At The Fair".

Good to hear so much love for Welcome to the Room...Sara. It has always stood out to me as a proper rock song on a largely pop record. I went through a phase when it was my favourite on the album.

I've always been facinated by how much better TITN went down in the UK that the US. It hit #1 on three seperate occasions and was the year-end 5th highest seller in 87 in the UK and the year-end 7th highest seller in 88. It is the 7th highest seller of the 1980's in the UK and is still something like the 50th highest selling record of all time.

BTM was still able to ride the long coattails of Tango rather than getting there on it's own steam..it had no UK hits .Tango had 3 top tens there Stevis's TOSOTM also benefited as it hit number 3 UK by far her best showing there and Rooms on Fire was a top 20 hit.

Tango is the only Fleetwood Mac album on my 'desert isle' list. I can do without all the others, but Tango In The Night and Stevie's Rock A Little would be the two albums from this crew that I couldn't do without.

It is said you never really stop loving your first love, and Tango was my first Fleetwood Mac album. I was 14 years old. I've probably listened to it front to back over a thousand times; maybe more than three thousand times. Those first years, 87-91, I played Tango nearly daily. Some days, I listened to it five or six times. I wore that cassette out! I know every note and syllable and inflection. It never gets old, and I never, ever tire of those songs. If I had any talent for music, I could play all of these songs from my mind alone. In the past week alone, I've had it on the iPod upstairs, or spun the vinyl downstairs...where the big old house is mine.

One of the biggest critiques I see and hear of the album in this thread is that it sounds like the 80s. Well, most of what came out in the 80s sounds like the 80s - how else would a pop album from 1987 sound?

Of the b-sides, Lindsey's are best - You and I Part 1, Down Endless Street - these are great songs. I'd love to hear a version of Book of Miracles with vocals - I'm sure one exists. Ricky is not a favorite, but I still play it frequently enough to have it memorized.

Digging into the outtakes, I *love* the early version of You And I Part 2 commonly called "Eyes Wide Shut" with Christine singing alone. I do wonder what else might be siting in those Warner vaults...

I do wish Stevie had been in a better place for this album. I cannot place blame on anyone but her (it's common with chiffonheads to assume some conspiracy against her on the part of Lindsey). We know things were tense between her and Lindsey, and I'm sure it was hard, and - obviously - things had reached a boiling point as evidenced by him leaving after the album was finished. She couldn't commit to this record - and notice I said couldn't - not wouldn't - because drug addicts aren't themselves, and while I'm sure in *her* mind at the time she felt she was doing what she needed to do, it's woefully evident that she was half-assing her contributions. I'm not talking about her writing, but moreso about her overall presence and work ethic.

Regarding her songs, I adore When I See You Again - it's very touching song, and quite apropos for the moment and the circumstances that came afterwards. Welcome to the Room...Sara is, on the other hand, a big mess that perfectly represents everything that is wrong with Stevie's output from 87-93. It's a rambling rant with obscure lyrics that just isn't relatable unless you know the story. Frontline baby. Whatever. I'm shocked the rest of the band agreed to put it on the album, but maybe there simply was nothing better to choose from. Maybe that Book of Miracles with vocals was just not done right, or maybe Stevie held it back herself, because, you know, it "didn't sound like her demo".

The best part of Tango for me is Seven Wonders. Who cares who wrote it? Who cares what the lyrics are? I don't - what I care about is that it's one of the best vocal performances of Stevie's entire career. She really felt those lyrics, even if she didn't write them herself, and she sang them like she meant them. It is an anthem for me, the one song of her entire catalog I'd pick to be my song, to tell my story. When the deluxe Tango box comes out I very much hope that the Fresno show is cherry picked for some live performances, because that performance of Seven Wonders is my favorite, aside from the LP version, and I'd love to hear it cleaned up and free of the fuzzy sounds that always plague bootlegs from the cassette era.

Its the only cover (I believe) that was not created for the Mac. The Mac had zero influence on the cover and it does not represent anything for the band. At least Behind the Mask was a cover that the band asked the artist to create based on the band's chemistry. The Tango cover is just a painting that was hanging in Lindsey's home. That has no creativity whatsoever. The painting itself is not bad. I don't like it because it has nothing to do with the band unlike the other covers. I suppose you could say the cover represents the album perfectly because the album was a Lindsey solo album. Its appropriate that the cover come from Lindsey's favorite painting and have nothing to do with the band ;)

While I like the cover a lot, I do agree, it could've been better. I feel they should have used a picture of the band on the cover, like this one:

My Tango story is much the same - 15 years old, utterly captivated by the whole thing, played it endlessly and managed to find meanings in all the songs that related directly to my life - even Welcome To The Room, Sara, somehow! I had it in every format and I even got the songbook, just to try and absorb as much of its atmosphere as I could.

I love the cover - I think it has a romance and a mystery that fits the mood of the music, particularly songs like Mystified, You & I part 1 and the title track. It also lent itself brilliantly to this lovely UK commercial:

Anyway, I love it and am hoping for a bells-and-whistles reissue next year...

After Big Love, the albums stops for me in terms of high quality. The rest is boring or mwa, okay, for me.

At least you like one song and didn't trash the album. :p

I was so ready for this release after a long 5 year wait.My wife was in the hospital for an early arrival of my twin daughters and I would drive to the hospital listening to the Big Love cassette single ( with You and I pt 1 on the flip side)over and over. When the album was finally released I was very pleased. The only issue I had was the lack of "Stevie" which at this point it was what I expected. I still love all the tracks on this album some better than others but a great collection from 1987.

Big Love (Great lead single, provocative ooh/aahs, and strong [now dated] video)
Seven Wonders (Soaring Stevie vocal, even if not self penned - she did get a writing credit, surprised it didn't chart better)
Everywhere (likable if not recycled Christine pop song)
Caroline (justifies the exotic album cover and is intense in the drums, rhythmic beat, and howls)
Tango In The Night (mesmerizing, haunting and shimmering)
Mystified (boring, but her vocal is sweet)
Little Lies (popular appeal and incorporates all the Mac voices, exemplifies Christine's songwriting prowess)
Family Man (nonsensical, Popeye derivative of a song, however the remixed version was more tolerable)
Welcome To The Room...Sara (I do like this song but Lindsey tried to put this tribal thing on Stevie's song and it didn't altogether work. It failed worse when he tried the same thing on the Say You Will version of Smile at You. Dave Stewart did it on In Your Dreams' Wide Sargasso Sea where it did actually work.)
Isn't It Midnight (Love Christine when she rocks a little, and here she rocks a lot - a stand out track)
When I See You Again (weakest of Stevie's contributions but this song still has lots to like about it, especially the cricketish percussion and the call and response ending between her and Lindsey)
You And I, Part II (Upbeat ending to the album what could have instead been When I See You Again and the Part II suggested there was always a Part I - which shimmers beautifully itself)

I think TANGO is probably Mac's 4th best album. It's more focused than MIRAGE.

My favorite tracks:

1. Little Lies
2. Seven Wonders
3. Tango In The Night
4. Everywhere
5. Big Love
6. Isn't It Midnight
7. You And I, Part II

So-so:

8. Mystified
9. Family Man

Meh:

10. Welcome To The Room, Sara
11. When I See You Again
12. Caroline

Slightly changing my original order from 2016:

2) Isn't It Midnight
3) Seven Wonders
4) Little Lies
5) Everywhere
6) Mystified
7) Welcome To The Room Sara
8) Big Love
9) Caroline

Genuinely love every single song on TITN

I love all the songs. But, I'm really sick of Little Lies. Besides the intro, which has a haunting chord progression. That's pure Christine comp.

I listened to the whole album today (for the first time in a while!)... I still really like it. It's always been one of my favourites because of these songs:

Little Lies
Isn't It Midnight
Big Love
Everywhere
Seven Wonders
Tango In The Night

The rest of the tracks are lesser faves, but I enjoy things about each of them. For example, the last minute or so of When I See You Again is beautiful.

I also prefer the first three and a half minutes of You and I, Pt II (the 6+ minute version from the Deluxe edition) much more than the original version on the album.

I'm going to say something a bit heretical: I don't much care for Everywhere. I don't think it's bad per se. I'm just not so keen on it as most everyone else seems to be.

Also, and this may be less heretical, I'm not too keen on the album version of Big Love (love Lindsey's solo version).

favorites are:

Little Lies
Tango In The Night
Seven Wonders
Caroline
Family Man

On Everywhere, I agree completely. I like it okay, but it was never a favorite. Little Lies kicks it's ass.

On Big Love, I disagree. Big Love acoustic was my pee song. If they'd done it full band, I wouldn't have had a pee song. I'd have needed some Depends!

I also agree with you. The live version is really good. Just imagine less computer programming and more real musicians like the live version. I think it would have been a much bigger hit. Imagine the live harmonies too. The album version never breaks out of that programmed timing. The live version just highlights how catchy the song can be. Even remakes of the song take the song to new levels.

Not a fan of Big Love either. Its the perfect and simple sugary pop song. 14 words till the simple chorus then another 14 words till the chorus again. The guitar at the end is great but it frustrates me because its only at the very end where the song is at least interesting. Almost any track off Go Insane is better.

I've said this before but Isn't It Midnight should have been the lead single. There was such anticipation for the first Mac song in 5 years. In MTV's prime I think the song would have come close to the top 10. It would have given the album depth. It also would have welcomed them on rock stations again. They had a huge list of pop hits that would have charted afterwards. It was the time to make a statement that the Mac can rock. John's bass line, Lindsey's guitar and vocals, Christine's writing and vocals just merge together for something that was really Fleetwood Mac. I just wish we could have gotten more songs like that.

I get these annoying raccoons at my house. I cant seem to keep them away. For whatever reason if I play When I see you again and Welcome to the Room Sara it seems to do the trick of keeping them at bay.
Mirage took a beating for being too pop. But good Lord, any song off Mirage is a better pop song than Tango. Gypsy, Hold Me, Love in Store crush Big Love, Seven Wonders, and Everywhere

I totally agree with this.

A single order like this:

Isn't It Midnight
Big Love
Little Lies
Seven Wonders
Everywhere

With respect to Everywhere, I think the earlier version that formed the basis of the 12" remix (and probably closer to CM's original vision) with some additional layered in harmonies would have been better on the album.

I've always found Love In Store a real snoozer..... I want to like it, but it sounds hugely unfinished to me... big long gaps with absolutely NOTHING going on. Like Lindsey wasn't around to finish producing it or something.

Interesting
The overdubbing was insane and so are the harmonies
Its one of the typical short Christine love songs like Honey Hi, Brown Eyes, Think About Me, etc
The song is all harmony and overdubs LOL
Which is why I really like it. Stevie's voice is so good 1981-1982. To hear her harmonize with both Lindsey and Christine during this time on a record is very rare but so good!

I LOVE your sense of humor(no offense, I think we have very similar senses of that- and I thank you for usually understanding mine).

I will always love Mirage. FAR more than Tango, possibly even more than Tusk. I've said since BuckVie was released, that it's Mirage, Part II. Simple pop songs. FUN.

Whassamatta baby, should keep any gaze of raccoons at bay!
