Wasn't there talk a few years ago about the US festival documentary that was going to feature videos of Fleetwood Mac's show? Has there been any updates?

I think it was finally shelved after several years of rights issues :-(

Dude, you're one of the people that periodically asks about it:
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=55475&highlight=festival%22
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=54674&highlight=festival+1982
However on the facebook pages there's not been any update since last November and it was unrelated:
As heard tonight by a world class drummer.." The guitar players are empty calories the drums and bass are the meat and potatoes"
Please post your thoughts!!

Well that is pretty exciting. I see the Mirage album cover in the top right corner. I hope we finally get some good videos of unseen Mirage tour performances.

Really hope this happens. I'm tired of getting my hopes up only to have them dashed by the passage of time and no product delivered. I really got my hopes up years back when Spin did a cover and spread on outdoor festivals. As an attendee, I was contacted for quotes by the writer who got my info off an obscure website posting. He seemed positive more performance material would be coming out as interest had been building. So far all I've ever found was the compilation DVD from '83 and a few full performance CDs, which The English Beat one is quite good! Money talks, as they say... and it's clearly the issue on this one.

When asked about the 1983 edition they said:
The US Festivals one never knows what the future brings, of course - but for now, one thing at a time. this is something we wanted to do for a while, not an easy thing to set up, but we are now past the hard part. the significance of 1982 was that it truly took a vision and made it into a reality, created an awesome venue from near nothingness, and pioneered so many things as it went. more on this soon.

No problem, I just activated the notifications option in the post.
I was hoping for more since last time they had said "Keep your eyes open on full performance releases for 2015!" but I guess they couldn't do more without waiting for another ten years to clear the copyright issues. However I'll be happy with whatever little footage they have for us, it's still better than nothing.

I had also asked about the full sets and here's their reply:
US Festival 1982: The US Generation Documentary well, two things, Julia - first the documentary film is "the story" of the US Festival, of which music is a huge part, but not the only part. As a documentary, it's not a concert film. Second, all the legal stuff that got resolved allowing us to post again because we know it's finally happening - there have been some changes here as a result, all good ones. That means that some of the older posts are not coming from the same voice. But hang in there - more to come soon - including info about the full music sets.

Yes.The biggest drag is getting the music copyright clearances from all the bands and artists.I hope they work it out to make everybody happy.

You're welcome Danielle, these were things I wanted to do also for me, so I just thought "If I won't do it myself, noone will do it for me so it's better to stop waiting passively and act." It was a pleasure to share with everyone nonetheless, not to mention that the most people will want it, the most probably we will obtain it.

Any guesses on what we'll see from Fleetwood Mac in this documentary? I'm still waiting on more info, but assuming there will be at least three videos of them, my guesses are: Go Your Own Way, Dreams or Rhiannon, and You Make Loving Fun. If there's only one video of Fleetwood Mac my guesses are: The Chain and Don't Stop.

The major issue with these kind of things is the copyright BS they have to go through with each artist and band in order to add their concert clips to the collection.
Another major hurdle is getting the okay from the songwriters.
One songwriter can hold up the whole project.
This may not affect FM's concert (I don't know the set-list),
but getting the complete concerts sounds like a pipe dream.
I'll ask Rusty. He predicted the Cubs in 7.

From what I know they have the full sets, but they're putting them as Extra DVD material, from what I understood they're crowdfunding to release more full sets that they can and to be independent from record labels. If you scroll back to the late page it should be on one of their comments I pasted. I hope we'll see it next year.

Watch Previously Unreleased Video of Fleetwood Mac and the Police at the 1982 US Festival: Exclusive Premiere
<iframe width="630" height="354" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uTh7yoK1agc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Here are two exclusive previews from The US Festival 1982, a new feature-length documentary that has been in the works for the past four years. Watch a clip featuring Fleetwood Mac above, and another with the Police below – then find out how you can help complete this important project.
Set for release in 2017, the film will tell the story behind the US Festival, one of the most legendary and innovative music events. The US Festival 1982 promises extensive video of the crowd experience and interviews captured that weekend, combined with new comments from artists and event organizers. The original audio and video has been remastered, and all of the new interviews were shot in high definition.
However, there is still work to do. Director Glenn Aveni recently launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign to help generate the necessary funds to finish things up – and according to Aveni, they’re in the home stretch. “In our case with this film, we have been working on it for a while, and so we are pretty far along,” he says. “The B-roll footage – music, crowds, etc. – is all in place. The interviews are done. Some of the music is cleared, and the rest (that we want to use) is all negotiated and priced – both with the artists and with the relevant labels.”
Since access to a time machine seems unlikely at the moment, we can all be grateful that the US Festival sprang to life thanks to music fan Steve Wozniak, who also had a huge interest (and highly influential hand) in technology. That meant the festival was well-documented on audio and video.
As a co-founder of Apple Computers with Steve Jobs, Wozniak (“Woz” to those who knew him beyond a handshake) had made enough money to have a lot of fun. He decided to use his good financial fortune to throw a big party that would bring people together, using music as one of the common threads and bonds. A company, UNOSON (an abbreviation for “Unite Us In Song”), was created to produce the giant three-day outdoor concert that he envisioned.
Woz knew that what he was planning would take an army – he eventually would employ over 4,000 people, most of them hired locally – and together they built what is to this day the largest outdoor music venue – from scratch. He was no concert promoter, so he brought in the concert promoter, Bill Graham, to produce the event. Working with Graham was, of course, an experience that left Woz and all involved with a lot of colorful stories.
“The Kinks had a contractual obligation to go on at a specified time, but decided they wanted to take the stage at dusk to benefit from the stage lighting,” Aveni recalls. “Bill Graham was notorious for running shows like a military operation. He cajoled, pleaded, even threatened the Kinks to take the stage at the prearranged time, only to be rebuffed.”
Then Graham remembered seeing Kinks manager Elliott Abbott pull up backstage in a new Mercedes coupe, so Graham instructed one of his crew to lift Abbott’s car on a forklift and drive it over to the edge of the man-made lake just behind the stage. Graham now commanded the Kinks to perform as scheduled, “or the Mercedes goes into the lake!” The Kinks took the stage. In retaliation, however, Abbott would not allow the Kinks to be filmed, therefore there is no footage of the Kinks in this film – or anywhere else. In hindsight, Dave and Ray Davies have said they regret that this performance was not filmed.

A sea of more than 400,000 music fans came to San Bernardino, Calif., to camp out and have a good time with an incredible lineup of performers spread across three days. The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Grateful Dead and Talking Heads were among the heavy hitters on the bill.
With the temperatures leaping past the 100 degree mark, fans were grateful for the advance planning that the organizers had put in. The event featured water cannons, misting stations (now common, they made their debut here) and 150,000 US Festival-branded water bottles that went a long way toward keeping festival goers hydrated.
The stage was as innovative as it was massive. It sprawled to the size of a football field, with 400,000 watts of power. Giant video screens were installed – the first of their kind, they were visible during the day – and organizers also employed digital delay in another pioneering move that improved sound in the back. A satellite uplink sent the musical experience all the way to Russia, something that few believed that Wozniak could pull off.
Appropriately, five air-conditioned tents housed a technology expo with the latest software, video games and computers. There were showers, shade tents and plenty of portable toilets. In short, Woz made sure that everything that anybody might possibly need to have fun and not have to worry about anything, was present and accounted for.
“We heard that there were all kinds of new techniques – hydration systems for the audience, all of these new techniques – so that it would be the opposite of Woodstock,” drummer Stewart Copeland of the Police recalls in this exclusive clip from the film. “Instead of it being a disaster, it would be a noble enterprise where everybody came out feeling better than they went in.”
And Wozniak, for all of the money he sank into the festival in 1982 (and the subsequent sequel in 1983), called it a bargain. “I paid to see a million smiles,” he said.
Find out more information and how to contribute to the Kickstarter via this link. There is also an official Facebook page for The US Festival 1982, where you’ll find news updates and additional items related to the film.
According to the Kickstarter description, the film will run over 100 minutes with 40 percent of the running time devoted to live performances. There are no shortage of incentives available for fans who want to help support the film. They can purchase a copy of The US Festival 1982 on DVD and Blu-ray and also as a digital download. There are replica event t-shirts available (just in case your own original has seen better days) and for the high rollers, if you want to contribute $10,000, they’ll let you suggest your own list of incentive demands.

The live footage is great! I have the DVD from 1983 which is a fluff piece MTV put together of selected clips from each day and the resolution and sound are not that great. I can almost tell this footage has been doctored the way a lot of photo rendering apps do these days, but not to take away from, it's quite good and so is the sound. Way better than the 1983 DVD. I am on the fence about the kickstarter and hoping I fall off onto the right side soon... I was not in the audience for this one and would sure love it if we could get full day releases from each day of 1983, even if they had to cut less popular songs from the band's sets. And of course a separate option of Stevie's full set. I don't ask for much. Haha! It's too bad there's not more interest/financial backing for these things.

Yes, the few clips we had for now are awesome! Maybe for an anticipated self Christmas present I'll contribute a few dollars too, I'm excited about it and that way I'd get the DVD shipped to me right at the moment of the release.
It seems that they want to include all, or at least most of the full sets as extra material, but it depends on how well the kickstarter does. For now they're at almost 17 thousand dollars, so it's not bad but they need more visibility.

Yes, these images are fabulous!
However only the last two gifs are from the Gypsy performance, the second one with Stevie wearing her lace net is from another song. Judging from her mannerism and knowing her video performances I think she could have been performing either Sara or Dreams.

Kickstarter Campaign Started For New Documentary on the 1982 US Festival
On a blistering hot, Labor Day weekend in 1982, about an hour's drive from Los Angeles, The Ramones, B52's, Talking Heads, and The Police all took the stage in front of over 100,000 fans. The Police were in mid-tour for Ghosts in the Machine and as Stewart Copeland recollects: "we were whip-cracking hot - and we scorched Southern California". The next day, Eddie Money, Santana, The Cars, The Kinks, Pat Benatar, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers rocked to an even larger crowd. Sunday morning, The Grateful Dead took the stage bright and early - billed as "Breakfast in Bed with the Grateful Dead", and they were followed by a lineup that included Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band and Jackson Browne. Fleetwood Mac closed the show. This was The 1982 US Festival.
"The US Festival was financed by Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple," says Glenn Aveni, of Icon Music TV, an indie filmmaker who has produced and directed music documentaries on John Entwistle, The Clash, and Les Paul. "It was produced by Bill Graham. The 350,000 fans that were there still consider it a highlight of their concert-going lives. Yet for all its talent, and for all its influence and innovation, the US Festival is not so readily remembered, because there never was a film about it... Until now."
Woz felt the 1970's were The 'Me' Generation and that it was time for the world to embrace a less selfish credo, one of unity and togetherness," explains Aveni, Director of the documentary. "He created UNUSON - short for 'Unite Us In Song' to produce a huge 3-day outdoor state-of-the-art concert that married music and technology. I have entitled this documentary The US Generation in tribute to Woz and his message of unity. It's not lost on me that a message of unity should resonate with all of us today."
"Wozniak had the vision and the money and the determination to get it done. The opportunity arose, and he took it," adds Mickey Hart, in an interview for the film.
Aveni has worked on the film since 2012 and says it is mostly done. To help clear and remaster additional music for it, he has launched a campaign on Kickstarter. In an unusual concession from his distribution partner, he has arranged for the "rewards" from Kickstarter - including copies the film - to be immediately available after the film's completion, before any festival screenings, theatrical releases, or TV premier. "My distributor agreed that the people who were there have already waited 30+ years," he explains.
The innovations of the 1982 US Festival were as legendary as its performances. The venue was built from scratch in San Bernardino, on the site of a former prison farm, in a matter of a few months. It is still the largest outdoor amphitheater in America today. The US Festival invented misting stations, pioneered water cannons to cool the crowd, unveiled the debut of Diamond Vision - a huge screen actually visible during the day, and helped pioneer digital sound delay, so that fans in the back could hear sound in real time.
"The 1982 US Festival executed. They did it right, and showed it could be done right, setting the stage for future mega-shows from Live Aid to Bonnaroo and Coachella," says Gregg Perloff of Another Planet, who was with Bill Graham Presents at the time and was interviewed for the film.
"Prior to The US Festival in 1982", adds Aveni "No multi-day outdoor permit had been issued by any municipality since 1969 - the year of Woodstock and Altamont, both of which had serious operational difficulties and safety issues. If not for this event, who knows if and when other events would have occurred."
Free water and shade tents were everywhere. The stage was the largest yet seen, and the sound was powered by 400,000 watts. There was a tech pavilion under 5 air-conditioned tents, stocked by Woz and his friends with the latest gadgets and some prototypes of what was yet to come. They even piped music over satellite feed into the USSR - crossing The Iron Curtain.
"It's a great untold story full of awesome music, amazing anecdotes and larger than life personalities," adds Aveni. The US Generation documentary is a blend of music, archival footage, and interviews with the crowd and with performers. Besides Perloff and Hart, there are insightful present-day interviews with Stewart Copeland (The Police), Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Eddie Money, Marky Ramone, Kate Pierson (B-52's), and Wozniak himself, all speaking fondly and candidly about the event. Among those interviewed archivally are Sting, Pat Benatar, David Byrne, Ric Ocasek, Carlos Santana, and DaveDavies, along with Woz and Graham. The film also covers how the event was conceived, and regales with the on-site hijinks, challenges, and lively battles between Graham and Woz.
The Kickstarter campaign is offering the first copies of the film, in digital download, DVD, and Blu Ray, with options for extra music, and added celeb commentary. "We've gone to town on these Rewards," says Aveni. "If you love classic rock and have pined for something new, here you go."

New Documentary on the 1982 US Festival in the Works
Next to computers, Steve Wozniak’s greatest love was music. In 1982, he took some of the fortune he made as a co-founder of Apple and staged a massive money-losing music event called the US Festival. The lineup included The Ramones, B52s, Talking Heads, the Police, The Cards, Sanatana, The Kings, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac and more.
“The US Festival was financed by Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple,” says Glenn Aveni, of Icon Music TV, an indie filmmaker who has produced and directed music documentaries on John Entwistle, The Clash, and Les Paul. “It was produced by Bill Graham. The 350,000 fans that were there still consider it a highlight of their concert-going lives. Yet for all its talent, and for all its influence and innovation, the US Festival is not so readily remembered, because there never was a film about it… Until now.”
A documentary has been in the works since 2012 and is almost done. The final stage–clearing and remastering all the additional music–needs some financial help, hence this Kickstarter campaign.
Here’s more from the pitch.
The innovations of the 1982 US Festival were as legendary as its performances. The venue was built from scratch in San Bernardino, on the site of a former prison farm, in a matter of a few months. It is still the largest outdoor amphitheater in America today. The US Festival invented misting stations, pioneered water cannons to cool the crowd, unveiled the debut of Diamond Vision – a huge screen actually visible during the day, and helped pioneer digital sound delay, so that fans in the back could hear sound in real time.
“The 1982 US Festival executed. They did it right, and showed it could be done right, setting the stage for future mega-shows from Live Aid to Bonnaroo and Coachella,” says Gregg Perloff of Another Planet, who was with Bill Graham Presents at the time and was interviewed for the film.
“Prior to The US Festival in 1982”, adds Aveni “No multi-day outdoor permit had been issued by any municipality since 1969 – the year of Woodstock and Altamont, both of which had serious operational difficulties and safety issues. If not for this event, who knows if and when other events would have occurred.”
Free water and shade tents were everywhere. The stage was the largest yet seen, and the sound was powered by 400,000 watts. There was a tech pavilion under 5 air-conditioned tents, stocked by Woz and his friends with the latest gadgets and some prototypes of what was yet to come. They even piped music over satellite feed into the USSR – crossing The Iron Curtain.

ABOUT KICKSTARTER / HOW IT WORKS
BASICS: Kickstarter is a crowd funding site. It is used by artists to raise $ for projects. People “back” a project they like by making a “pledge”. They get a “reward”, usually something pretty cool.
Here are the 6 main points to remember:
1) Backing a Kickstarter project is NOT making a donation! When you "back" or financially support a Kickstarter project, you are purchasing a “reward”. You are also helping the project at the ground floor, but you always get to choose a "reward" of fair or comparable value. The more you pledge, the nicer the Reward, and there are many possible levels of support.
2) Most important thing to remember: When you back a Kickstarter project, it is a "pledge". No money is charged to your card. NONE! You can increase, decrease, or cancel the pledge at any time. You do not even need a present available balance, and there is ZERO RISK.
3) The card is ONLY charged AFTER the campaign, and ONLY IF the campaign is successful to reach its target. (The US Festival target is $60K, and the campaign ends Dec 19. If it doesn’t reach the target by then, no money is transacted and no pledges are EVER charged. A Kickstarter campaign is all or nothing – that’s why we’re counting on you to help get there.)
4) The earliest pledges are the most important. It helps the project get seen by more people. If you know the Project Creators, the sooner you back the better, and again - the card is not charged until the end.
5)The only things needed to set up a Kickstarter account are a name and email. You can even use a fake name. It takes less than a minute. You go to Kickstarter.com (https://www.kickstarter.com/), click Sign Up, enter a name and email, pick a password, and you have an account. Boom. Done.
6) Once you have an account, you can make a pledge. CLICK HERE TO GO TO OUR PAGE (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1900037279/the-us-festival-1982-a-feature-length-documentary?ref=project_link)
That’s it! When you go to our page, please plan to spend a few minutes. Watch the video. Read the copy. Scroll down and watch the music video in the MUSIC section – featuring B-52’s, Talking Heads, and Tom Petty. Then choose any Reward, and follow the prompts from there. If questions, email me/us or click Contact Me on the page, upper right.

I've already pledged last Saturday so I commented this post with my reason for wanting this movie to be available to the public: being the closest I will ever get to experience my favourite artists in one of their best moments.
Those of you who have pledged comment for Glenn too, I actually had the chance to talk to him on Facebook and he's a very genuine person, he deserves it:

I just want to say that the project is right now at 99% completion circa and it will end in 5 hours, only 886 $ are missing.
If this projects gets all the 60'000$ we will see this very important documentary in a few days instead of a year from now and directly at our home, and we can also choose which full performances to have as a bonus rewards, on top of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks there are a lot more great artists and bands like Greatful Dead, David Bowie, The Police, U2 and more. If someone is interested but still hesitant, this is the moment.

You choose from the options at the side, however since Fleetwood Mac is from the 1982 edition you just have to choose one of the options that includes the music bonus from 21$ and beyond if I remember well.
The options in which you have to choose the day are only the ones regarding the 1983 footage. For anything you can message the director from both KickStarter or Facebook.

Maybe I'm misreading this but if they send
out the video early to ks backers as a token
of appreciation, they're taking a great risk on
someone uploading it to YouTube. Which will
insure them losing $$$.

I was wondering the same thing but the director isn't certainly a newbie, I think he has thought about it beforehand since the crowdfunding was his idea. Surely as with copyrighted music youtube will shut any profile who will try to upload the movie.

Glenn Aveni sent this email to all backers:
HEY, HEY - FELLOW NEW WORLD FEST FANS, ATTENDEES AND COUNTRYMEN
Posted by Glenn Aveni (Creator)
It's been two months since the Kickstarter ended just before the holidays I can't tell if it feels like yesterday, or 5 years ago - so much is happening everywhere.
I've been truly busy - on a few fronts. I have searched for and located more archival footage, and now have all that I could possibly want in terms of crowd shots, and what they call BRoll. I have begun negotiating for additional rights for music, and am also cleaning up (that is, using technology to improve) the rough cut of the film so far, and I've put the word out to shoot interviews with additional artists. In the next update after this, I'll have some specifics on all of the above.
As an informational note - approvals from the headline artists (Police, Petty, Fleetwood Mac etc.) have more importance than others, not only because of their popularity or the fact that they are headliners, but because those deals set the terms that we can use to offer all artists. This is standard for how music projects get priced. So artists that are equal are all treated equal. It's sometimes called a "most favored nation" clause. It's like the foundation of a building - once it is set, the building goes up quickly. So that's a major thing I hope to have resolved very soon.
We’re on track for the delivery dates promised this summer.
This update is public but the next one will be private (to you, the backers only), as I will be reaching out to you in the next update in case you have photos and stories you'd like to see in the booklet. As in all things, backers take priority. I have received many inquiries about the booklet on KS and on Facebook - hang tight, don't send anything yet, the call-out is coming soon.
Meantime, the images below give you a sense of my long days reaching out, and negotiating, it's phone and email all freakin' day.
Again, and I can't say it enough - I greatly appreciate your support and stay tuned for more soon. Feel free to hit me up here, or on FB if you have questions and I will reply quickly.
My best,
Glenn

FOOTAGE & MUSIC & BOOKLET, OH MY!
Posted by Glenn Aveni (Creator)
Hello friends, backers and US Festival-ers. Glenn here with an Update.
1. BOOKLET - this is an awesome FREE bonus! Some who booked thru our Facebook page(s) know about this, but now I am telling EVERYONE WHO BACKED because I have decided that EVERY BACKER gets a booklet! What is the booklet? It is a 96 page (minimum) 4-color 8 1/2 x 11 keepsake of The US Festival like no other - because it is full of stories and photos FROM YOU - the people who were there! This is free, it is a bonus Reward, no cost to you, no extra shipping.
SO - THIS IS A SHOUT OUT FOR MATERIALS!!
If you want to submit for inclusion in the booklet, I set up an email account at
[email protected]. For stories - 100 words maximum (unless the story is so awesome you need more words). For photos - jpg or pdf format only. Please include 10 words with each photo so we know for sure what we are looking at. I realize some of you may have sent stories and/or images to Kickstarter or Facebook months ago - sorry, you need to re-send them to the website I just mentioned. I cannot guaranty that what you send will be included, some of it is luck as to who sends us something similar, but I can tell you that Backers take first priority. PLEASE DO NOT SEND A HUNDRED PHOTOS - pick the best (up to 6) and limit it to that. Anyone who pledged at the $40 level and above will get a physical booklet, and anyone who pledged at $28 or less - downloads - will get an e-booklet via download. Any questions, feel free to ask here or at the website. But please please - only submit materials through the website and don't forget 10 words on each photo.
http://i.imgur.com/Y74gLlM.jpg
IMPORTANT NOTE: even though the artist's rendering above says '82, and even though the film is about '82 - the booklet will cover BOTH years, so stories and photos from '83 are very much welcome.
2. FOOTAGE - very happy to announce we have secured a great flat-rate deal with a major footage house which will allow us to have about 15% more footage from the show than I expected and more bonus footage. This is what we call BRoll, it's everything except the music - crowd shots, crowd interviews, talent interviews, pan shots ... very happy about this.
3. MUSIC - it's easiest to strike deals for music once the first deal is done, so it is best to strike the first deal with the top artist. There are several we could call the top artist, I went with The Police. I don't want to give away too much info, but you will see - in the film - their famous medley of Message in a Bottle into Can't Stand Losing You into Reggatta De Blanc and back to Can't Stand Losing You. More Updates on music and bonus footage soon.
IS THERE A DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR THE BOOKLET? Yes. May 31st. You have the month of May. Again - any questions - hit me here or on the website. Submissions only via the website. Web address again ...

I don't understand. I thought this was completed a while ago. Maybe someone can post in simple, non-hype terms what exactly the timeframe is. I will buy it when it's on DVD, which looks to be no time soon, if what I am inferring is correct.

The documentary itself is completed, the bonus music, which is the extra material is to be finished to arrange. Basically burocratic stuff.

The official facebook page just posted links to this two articles with new unearthed video footage of Steve Wozniac but for some reason the board won't let me embed anymore so here the copy and paste, make sure to click to watch the video of the first article:
Watch a Young Steve Wozniak Promote His Ill-Fated Rock Festival in 1982
"The theme of the '80s, a good theme, is the idea of people working together."
Did you know that Paste owns the world’s largest collection of live music recordings? It’s true! And what’s even crazier, it’s all free—hundreds of thousands of exclusive songs, concerts and videos that you can listen to and watch right here at Paste.com, from Muddy Waters to The Rolling Stones to R.E.M. to LCD Soundsystem. Every day, we’ll dig through the archive to find the coolest recording we have from that date in history. Enjoy!
Today’s Paste Vault entry is truly a buried treasure, filmed on July 19, 1982:
“The ‘80s may be the ‘Us’ decade.”
So says Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in this amazing promotional video, shot exactly 35 years ago today, ahead of the 1982 Us Festival near San Bernardino, Calif.
By 1982, Apple had made the 31-year-old Wozniak a very wealthy man, and he aspired to put his fortune to use in the form of a new music festival that would unite his passions for live music, emerging computer technology, and fostering community.
“It’s an event to incorporate a lot of things that have always put a smile on my face,” Wozniak tells the camera. “I was driving along thinking, okay, I’m in an interesting position that I’ve got the resources to make it possible, and if I don’t, maybe nobody will do it for me.”
Wozniak had survived a traumatic plane crash in February of 1981 and was looking to expand his business and personal interests. “With Apple,” he says, “it was not started as an attempt to be a big, huge corporation or something. It was just, try to go out and do something I wanted for myself that felt good, looked good, was very small, and we came out of the grassroots type of people. Just doing simple, normal things, not a lot of professionals, whatnot. And here we are putting on a music event, and we’re learning how to do it as we go, and we’re going to wind up with a very fine event that no one else will do because they’re looking at a different bottom line.”
The lineup Wozniak assembled was, indeed, very fine. Bands included on the Labor Day weekend bill of 1982: Gang of Four, The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Police, The Cars, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Kinks, Santana and Fleetwood Mac.
Wozniak reportedly sank about $13 million into the production (“half my net worth,” he says), but things did not go as well as he had hoped. That first weekend was staged in 100+ degree heat, and there were reports of multiple drug overdoses. Further iterations were staged in 1983 with equally impressive lineups, but the festival ultimately lost millions of dollars.
Footage shot for the promo video is so ‘80s it hurts: Watch Woz, swallowed up in beige, tour the festival site in a bright blue Ford pickup! Watch him sit in a ridiculous winged chair! Have a look at his stupendous tudor mansion with the Porsche in the driveway!
His spirit, though, was undeniably in the right place. “The theme of the ‘80s,” he says, “a good theme is the idea of people working together.”

I don't know if this has been posted before but here is the entire audio set from the US Festival. Its really amazing because just a short time ago we would have chopped off our right hand for such a recording because it seemed lost forever.

I received another e-mail via Kickstarter, if you other backers haven't seen it check the spam mail:
DATES AND UPDATES --
Posted by Glenn Aveni (Creator)
I am so pleased to finally be able to send this Update.
Over this coming weekend, I am going to also send out the Kickstarter Survey - this is where you get to enter data like your address, t-shirt size, other things I will need to send you the Rewards. Here's the quick version of where we are on that: The music is cleared. The film is almost finished. It WILL be finished later in August. You will have it in September.
Here's the detail: The film is shaping up to be between 100 and 105 minutes in length. PLEASE remember when I mention the film, I mean the documentary - that's what this is - and it's about the 1982 US FESTIVAL. Bonus footage (a lot more music) and other Rewards - separate things
The interviews, archival clips, crowds and crowd shots - these are first rate, even better that I thought they'd be. The story really gets covered and the quotes are there. It's a film that is not only reminiscent, but one we can all be proud of.
The music IN the documentary is a mix of full songs and partial. The partials are too many to list. Full songs include Can't Stand Losing You (Police), Black Magic Woman (Santana - legendary performance), Gimme Some Water (Eddie Money - remember him compelling Graham to turn on the water cannons? We have that on film), Truckin' (Grateful Dead - they played so early on Sun, the crew - after partying the night before - forgot to turn on the equipment - limited footage and it's a one-camera lock), Let's Get Together (Joe Sharino - Woz' friend - covering the classic by the Youngbloods) ... not to worry, all your favorite artists are represented, just not entire songs. The music in the bonus features fills in the blanks.
Music clearances - this was BRUTAL. To be clear, the talent was a pleasure to deal with. The publishers, not as much. In fairness to them, I was approaching them about a single segment from a 35 year old show and I am not exactly Live Nation or Sony. I was not the top priority, sorry it took so long. But it's done.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW: I incorporate the music into the film as I chose to allocate it. Then comes post production - sound edit, color correction, etc. After that, I will have a final film, and this will be later this month (August).
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THAT: I add the "extra's" for the deluxe download and DVD/Blu-Ray's, I contact an authoring house to establish the menu and meantime - I finalize the other Rewards - t-shirts, posters. I intend to send all of this out, including the film, in September.
EXCEPTIONS - the booklet, I am making it great, it might not be ready in September, I may have to send separately. It's a ton of work.
SURVEYS: you MUST fill these out. Look for a "Kickstarter survey" from me within the next couple of days. I need your address (don't messenger me your address, please - wait for the survey), and depending on your Reward, I may need other info too.
I think I covered it. Sorry this was so long, but it was a long time coming. :)
US FESTIVAL FOREVER!

We will be delivering rewards soonest and hope to have all done within two or three weeks at most! (hopefully sooner)
Please stay tuned for specific information per each reward category and if you haven't replied to our survey yet to pick T-shirt sizes and DVD versus blu ray please do so asap so we may process your rewards shipment. Woz is so excited to see the film and I know you all will love it!
I'd like to take a moment of silence for our fallen musical hero and Us Festival comrade Tom Petty..........you'll see his music in the film that will help heal our hearts over this loss.
All the best and let's stay united in song!!

NEW UPDATE - IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SURVEYS, AND MORE
Posted by Glenn Aveni (Creator)
As you know, there were many comments to the Update I posted yesterday. Some from backers that say they had not received the survey to enter address, and other info. I did some research, and figured it out.
I also got some additional good news besides.
So I have posted another update.
1. If you backed at the $175 level (Insider Special), my apologies, I never hit "send" to the survey, so this will of course happen today. This affects 3 of the backers who commented yesterday - and explains why you never received .
2. If you backed at below the $40 level, everything you get is a download, so there is no need for me to have your address, and thus no need for a survey. This also affects 3 of the backers who commented yesterday.
3. Everyone else who commented about not getting the survey, hang in there - I will get to you one by one and make sure I have your info. Everyone will get the Reward they chose.
4. We now have a date for the LA Premiere which is November 16 - between 6P and 9P (screening starts at 7P sharp) - this is for Backers who selected this level ONLY. I will be sending the complete info to you directly, PLEASE try to make it - sorry for the short notice, but I wanted to pick a date when WOZ can make it. :)
5. In the last update, I said the word "booklet" when I should have said "program"- as in festival program replica. The booklet you get as a bonus (tied to "Facebook", as you recall), will be sent later, after the film and other rewards. It is a large endeavor compiling the images and cool stories, and it will be great.
I am no photographer, and I used my cell for these - but below please see 82 T-shirt (note: art on both front and back, same as original), poster, and program replica.
Again - Insider Special and LA Premiere backers will receive separate message today.

A new documentary film, ‘The US Generation,’ is the story of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s 1982 US Festival
http://www.whittierdailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/1126_ocr_usfestmovie-01.jpeg
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, center, at a recent screening of “US Festival ’82: The US Generation,” a documentary on the music festival Wozniak founded. He’s seen here with, left to right, director-executive producer Glenn Aveni, Bruce Gibb, executive producer, Wozniak, Jay Cederholm, co-director-editor, and Carlos Harvey, Wozniak’s finance guy for the US Festival, who is also interviewed in the film. (Photo by Joy Daunis)
A lot of big numbers get tossed around in any conversation about the inaugural US Festival held Labor Day weekend in 1982 at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino.
Fans numbered 425,000 or so, many of whom camped on the grounds in the dusty, summer heat of early September.
There were 19 top-flight acts – everyone from Talking Heads, the Police and Tom Petty to Fleetwood Mac, Santana and the Grateful Dead – nearly half of which are now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The budget, which started at $10 million ended up in the neighborhood of $13 million, the equivalent of $33 million today.
And then there’s a singular man, with a large and generous dream, who didn’t care so much about the millions of dollars he was spending to create the US Festival as he did about how much everyone who was there, fans and musicians and staff alike, enjoyed the experience.
“None of us would be here if it wasn’t for one man,” said Glenn Aveni, director and executive producer of “US Festival 1982: The US Generation,” a new documentary on the iconic yet often under-appreciated music festival. As he spoke Aveni nodded at the man in question, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computers, who with maybe 100 or so invited guests was in the Charlie Chaplin Theater at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood for the world premiere of the documentary.
“Woz puts up $10 million of his own money, with no expectation of seeing any return, and says, ‘I paid to see 10 million smiles,'” Aveni said.
Now, as “US Festival 1982: The US Generation” is set to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 28, on the AXS TV cable network, there’s a chance to relive those smiles, or discover them for the first time, in the strangely beautiful story of a man and his festival and the legacy it left.
“What you did was revolutionize the large festival industry,” Aveni said, still addressing the man everyone, friends and strangers alike, refers to as Woz. “Live Aid took their cue from the US Festival. Bonnaroo, Coachella, all of them did.”
The film, which mixes current-day interviews with Wozniak, musicians who performed there, and others who were part of the fest with performance segments and archival footage from the days before and during the festival, is the most comprehensive look yet at the US Festival, which after a sequel over Memorial Day weekend in 1983 was never held again.
***
The film takes viewers through the planning of the festival from Woz’ initial inspiration – “I’ve got way more money than I need for life,” he says in one soundbite early on – to his recruiting of a team to help him realize that dream.
Attorney John Collins, who handled legal work for US Festival and was also in the audience at the screening, recalls how he and Peter Ellis were invited to Wozniak’s apartment in Berkeley where they recall he was living under the pseudonym of Rocky Clark after returning to college to finish his degree. Ellis says they really didn’t know what to make of Woz or his big plans for a music festival, but when he took out his checkbook and wrote out a check for $2 million they were in business.
Unlike today, when you conceivably could find a music festival practically every weekend of the year, in 1982 there really weren’t many, if any, being held in the United States. Woodstock had been huge, but also had huge problems cramming half a million people into a farm in upstate New York. A few months later, Altamont with its bad trip vibes and the murder of a fan by Hell’s Angels just feet from where the Rolling Stones were playing, effectively ended the first wave of American festivals.
There are great clips of the search for a venue for the US Festival, including one in which organizers are meeting with residents to persuade them to get on board behind the US Festival. “You’ve got nothing but punk rockers, who are probably the most dangerous people in this country!” one angry man shouts in the clip.
After finding Glen Helen and getting the county to sign off on a festival there, the US Festival organizers brought on famed concert promoter Bill Graham, whose team included Gregg Perloff, who is filmed recalling how he came to the park a few months before the festival and saw a vast open space that was completely unprepared to host a massive concert. “I’m thinking, ‘These guys are out of their minds,'” he says in the documentary.
But the US Festival team had money to throw at any problem, and within a few months the park had been bulldozed and landscaped and whipped into shape, Perloff says.
Carlos Harvey, who was Wozniak’s financial guy at the time and attended the screening wearing his original US Festival satin jacket, was the one who worried as Wozniak signed check after check after check.
“Everybody got the biggest payday they’d ever had,” he says in the film of the deals struck to sign all the acts. “It was just money flying around like confetti.”
***
The bands Graham booked represented the best of the era, whether they were established acts such as Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band or Jackson Browne, or still slightly underground acts such as the Ramones and Gang of Four. Interspersed between the interviews on creating the US Festival is the proof of that quality in clips of nearly every act on the bill.
Not every act agreed to let Aveni use their performances in the documentary, but there are by my count seven full performances seen in the film, from the B-52s “Strobe Light” to Eddie Money’s “Gimme Some Water,” the Cars’ “Bye Bye Love” to Santana’s “Black Magic Woman.”
The headliners on each night also agreed to let the film use a full song for the film, and they’re among the most thrilling moments in the documentary. The Police getting a crowd of 100,000 or more on Friday to sing along to “Can’t Stand Losing You,” Fleetwood Mac delivering a blazing take on “The Chain” on Sunday, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers inducing chills in the Chaplin theater as they tear through “Refugee.”
A handful of musicians who played that weekend are also interviewed for the documentary, including Marky Ramone, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Kate Pierson of the B-52s, and Stewart Copeland of the Police.
“Like the kid in the toy shop, Woz was like, ‘I can do this, I can do that,'” says Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. “It was wonderfully child-like.”
Adds Woz a few minutes later in the film: “I just wanted to make it as awesome as possible.”
***
After the screening, which was attended in large part by backers of a Kickstarter campaign that helped fund the finishing touches on the film, Aveni and Wozniak took questions from the crowd, which elicited unexpected nuggets including:
Wozniak would have liked to have booked John Mellencamp, then still known as John Cougar, and the Go-Go’s for the US Festival.
He and his team thought about doing a movie of the festival and met with future Disney chief Michael Eisner, then at Universal, though the project never came to fruition.
His first child, Jesse John Wozniak, was born a day before the festival – two months early – which left him disoriented and tired throughout the weekend.
Mostly, though, the post-movie conversation made clear what the film already had – this was a labor of love, and though he lost millions of his own money, he has no regrets.
“It was a full moon when the Police came on,” Wozniak said. “Bill Graham came up to me and put his arm around me and said, ‘Look at that audience. That doesn’t happen but once every 10 years.'”
People come up to him all the time and thank him for one thing or another, an Apple product, a philanthropic endeavor, but there’s one thing that always makes him happiest to hear
“When they say the US Festival I have to shake their hand a little longer,” Wozniak said.
