View Full Version : overdoses.......

you know, with all the conversation around Prince, and the possible use of "save drugs" when he possibly overdosed made me think about Stevie. Whether the Prince stories turn out to be true or not, I have to wonder if any such interventions had to be done on Stevie. I'm suspecting yes. Paul Fishkin talks about them having to "scrape her off the floor" more than once, and of what he called "near-overdoses" on the road. Not all overdoses are fatal, and I got the sense that because they didn't kill her he didn't consider them real "overdoses' but honestly, I can totally imagine her having been found unconscious and having to get emergency medical intervention. Someone in an earlier thread said that they think she's got nothing more to hide of the "bad stuff" that happened, but I think she really would hate for people to think about or dwell on the real gritty and grim aspects of her addictions.
Just with all this Prince talk about such things makes me think of how damn lucky she is.

you know, all the talk about the chronic hip problems caused by jumping around in way too high heels got me wondering - don't people always talk about Stevie having hip problems? could it be similar thing?
i know that these days she doesn't jump around nearly as much as Prince did for decades, but people say she used to in her younger, coked up days.

there's been mention of foot problems, which wouldn't surprise me a bit.
I'd hate to think she's taking anything prescription let alone opioids for pain with her history......
She'd clearly like to not wear the boots (all summer long) but too many selfish fans bitched about the frankenboots so she switched back.

no, no - i don't think she's taking something like that for pain, i was just thinking that her hip problems may stem from those high heels.
there are other artists who switched to flat boots these days and they are doing just fine, still screaming with style - Cyndi Lauper who is also very very short comes to mind.
frankenboots are not the only option!

But she likes to say she came thisclose to dying all of the time anyway. I would think she'd be ok with talking about it now, especially when she is giving one of her cautionary comments to the youth of today.

yeah but this is Stevie we're talking about....everything is romanticized in her versions. You know, like dying in the movies.... beautifully coiffed and made up and hand on your brow....
On the floor unconscious, or in a pool of your own bodily fluids..... not so romantic a picture.

I just saw Cyndi and she was wearing a platform sneaker ( i refuse to use buzz words ),also Pat Benatar had them too the difference is these ladies wear pants not a dress so it looks cool I have seen Margaret Cho in the same type of solid sole platform but they were combat boots

If it turns out that Prince died of a drug overdose and Stevie did not is quite shocking and ironic. Stevie told the story that years after he did Stand Back she was sick in bed and refused to give her cough medicine because Prince said he did not want her to get addicted to another substance (or something like that).
Stevie's Thousand Days is written about Prince and some of the lyrics are shocking.... about him dragging her up the stairs, etc. Now looking back to have thought Stevie survived but Prince did not is pretty ironic.

yeah i saw Cyndi a year ago and she wore combat boots, without any platform on them. Stevie has some similar stage outfits that would go with nice stylish flat boots.

i don't think anyone familiar with opiod issues would call it ironic; just incredibly sad. even people who do everything to fight addiction (in themselves and others!) can succumb.
as we all know, opioids are highly addictive, and even worse for people who have addictive nature to begin with. those stories as well as all recent Paisley Park ones sound very much like Prince did not want to be enabler for anyone. Richard Dashut cites his own addictive nature as one of the big reasons why he doesn't want to have back surgery he so desperately needs - because he thinks he can't risk getting addicted to opioids he would need after the surgery.

in fairness I think the comment was saying that it's ironic not that Prince succumbed but that Stevie didn't given that her life was certainly (at one point) a total recipe for disaster

Not everyone develops the same symptoms, my hip arthritis is moderate severe but manageable with out pharmaceutical drugs , and I'm sure if Stevie moved on stage 1 10th that Prince did she may have been in worse shape, and been given pain killers and opiates

Sorry. I am extremely familiar with opiod issues. Have 2 cousins who were addicted to heroin and the other painkillers. I also work with addicts DAILY. No lectures please. Of course it is sad but YES it is ironic someone who was supposedly so religious, straight and narrow who would not give a cocaine addict cough medicine would suffer even a worse addiction a quarter century later. Stevie's friends said they were just waiting for the call when she was going to overdose. I have yet to hear anyone in Prince's circle who even hinted at such a thing.
sorry to hear that ,it's a horrible problem,, It is the reason I have refused pharmaceuticals,
it is one thing to use recreational drugs , and laugh off the warnings and side effects to chase a high , it is another to have a Dr (who too many people put their trust into) prescribe them to you and become addicted to them (not by choice ) and not be able to be weaned off them or offered help , every one I know who has or had ( lost to ) an opiate addiction was never offered any assistants from the Dr who prescribed them ,
comparing the two is like comparing apples to elephants
have a Dr (who too many people put their trust into) prescribe them to you and become addicted to them
if all the speculations about Prince and opiates turn true, maybe that will be the last straw to precipitate some action? there was a big UNITE to Face Addiction rally in DC last fall http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6715448/unite-to-face-addiction-live-stream-steven-tyler-sheryl-crow calling for action. apparently there are several laws going through congress right now starting to address the issue, maybe, hopefully, something useful actually comes out of all that.

this should have been the last straw he has no recollection on how may prescriptions he actually wrote , how many he killed ,, he held large group diagnoses / prescribing seminars for a fee
we have in Massachusetts a law in place recently how Drs can write prescriptions and dentist are no longer allow to give a 60 day refillable prescription to teens or to anyone
Meet Dr. Michael Kostenko. He's written more than 40,000 prescriptions for oxycodone in the last two years.
He says at any given time, he has between 800 to 1,000 active patients in his practice. Nearly 100 percent of them get prescriptions for oxycodone

I was reading some posts/responses attached to a facebook meme someone commented on about Prince. So many of the comments were enraged that the word "addict" is being used to describe him. People actually saying "He wasn't an addict, he needed those pills for pain" and making accusations about other people trying to tarnish his reputation because of race issues. It always amazes me when people are incapable of finding fault with celebrities that they idolize. I'm pretty sure the same would be true if Stevie ever OD'd.

No Olive, that is not true at all. Whether you get your oxycodone on the street or by a corrupt doctor it's the same addiction. Its not apples to elephants as you say. Many start out with a Dr. over prescribing and then must go to the street to feed the addiction. Stevie was fed outrageous amounts of tranquilizers that she alleges was because the Dr. was a groupie.
It makes no difference at all whether your drugs feeding your addiction are from the street or a doctor. Its a rationalization to call it recreational use. What you fail to realize is there are bad doctors who don't care about the addiction. Your rationalization is what makes addicts feel they are not addicts and don't have a problem because a doctor is prescribing the medication. Here in Florida was the pill mill capital of the world. Doctors were prescribing tons of pain medication just to make a buck.
This is NOT apples and elephants!
To do any harmful drugs recreationally is the same as doing harmful drugs prescribed from a doctor over and over.

But dying because there's a dime-sized hole in your nose isn't romantic either. But your comment does remind me of Elizabeth Taylor and Butterfield 8. Everyone voted for her because they thought she just might swoon out of existence.

Yes. When Stevie wears those black leggings, she could incorporate flats more easily. But it doesn't matter. When you're hobbling on heels, you don't look better or any more glamorous in them than you would in comfy (but ugly) Reeboks.
The way Prince dressed, he usually had his heels to match his pants so it was not obvious where the pants stopped and the heels began. He could easily have started wearing flats a long time ago. He just didn't want to be short.

I know what Addiction is .
and it is F^CKING horrible
here in MA their is heroin epidemic check the HBO documentary on it , it is stemmed from oxy abuse from drs . and it is cheaper and easier to get
. I do not and never have take addiction lightly , but this a message board you and I are complete strangers and something can not be conveyed though a computer .
I have a friend who is going though hell to get off oxy she had to seek out other drs to assist her , so she would not turn to heroin or other street drugs . her out of touch primary care dr did not understand why she wants to get off it .
my apples to elephant was recreational drugs/ use = pot and causal coke user.... to people suffering with hard core addiction / drug problems . nobody does oxy recreationally it is used habitually because of a prior addiction usually began by being over prescribed it ,there is a huge difference
as far as Bad drs i had my share , there are plenty of them , a good one is hard to find and keep because they all fall to the drug companies .
I am firing / telling my current to go F himself on my next visit over an exchange we had because I refuse to take heavy duty pain meds he keeps prescribing to someone who has had an addiction problem

she should tell EVERYTHING
she's already put a heap of stuff out there
i think there's prob a lot of bad #hiT we dont know
and out with it.
won't taint my view of her.
and we all know both her addictions pretty much killed her soooooooooo
i don't think anyone familiar with opiod issues would call it ironic; just incredibly sad. even people who do everything to fight addiction (in themselves and others!) can succumb.
actually it IS ironic coz he bitched about her lifestyle choices
and it is probably one of the reasons they couldn't be friends or lovers or whatever.
and Stevie is STILL alive walking this planet.
Not Prince, not Michael Jackson, not xyz number of "celebs" who have "addictions" to legal drugs for whatever reason.
or mix their drugs, self medicate etc
whether or not the drugs were illegal or not is not even the issue.
you can get addicted to any drug.
let's just face facts.
Stevie is an immortal vampire.
