God this is so sad. We've lost so many great people this year already. I really hope that Stevie realises that the greats, such as Prince, don't live forever and she needs to give the world what she can while she still can.

No, the Wild Heart sessions started since right after Bella Donna in 1981 to 1983, and the show she was picked up by Prince was a Mirage one.

She wrote Stand Back in Jan '83 and had him come over to HER to help her record it
but then he takes her back to HIS place to record something (write a song together) during a FM tour ... was this Mirage?? and did that happen BEFORE she wrote Stand Back??????? or was this during Tango? If she says she thinks they stopped being friends coz of drugs. And what song was it? Since it clearly wasn't Purple Rain if he sent her that on a diff occasion
How could Prince have picked Stevie up during a MIRAGE tour if they only met in 1983 SisterNightroad??????? since she said she called HIM up...to help her. they'd clearly never met before that :o

I only know she recorded overdubs on the Prince song "All over you". The song has been catalogued in 1985 but could be written before that. I don't know if Stand Back happened before All Over you or after, I just think it is more probable it was Mirage. The only thing we have is Stevie's memory and that isn't very reliable. Little Red Corvette went out in 1982 so she may very well have heard it and started working on Stand Back in 1982. All Over You can't be dated to the Tango period.

Ok, so this is how I think it sort of fits together.
The show they allegedly met at happened on 23 September in Minnesota...
They have a bang-up time, but leave on tense terms, as they have massive disagreements with each other's lifestyles. They work on some songs? All Over You, etc. (maybe)
Fast forward to January 1983 (four months later), Stevie works on Stand Back, and decides to call Prince up. I couldn't find any specific information that explicitly states they had never bet before, so I'm assuming they did. Prince comes in, does what he does, and that's it. As highly guarded as Prince was, I don't think he would come to the studio, and add a synth part for just anyone, so I would be led to assume there was already some established relationship.

Yes, that is a prossible timeline.
But I thought:
1982 - Prince's record 1999, that contains Little red corvette, gets out. Stevie hears it and gets the inspiration for Stand Back. Stevie actually works on the song and calls Prince in 1982, not 1983 like she remembers, and he goes away. At the time it wasn't unusual for musicians to do uncredited apparitions in other artist's work, so he never asked to be credited. But he called her towards the end of the Mirage Tour to return the favor and she feels obliged to comply, probably also flatterd, so she jumps in his little red corvette and goes to his house. They record a bit of what will become All Over You, Stevie acts coked out (congruent with her Mirage persona) and then she goes away like he did for Stand Back and they both resume their lives.
1984 - Stevie is working on Rock a Little. Stand Back already went out on the Wild Heart and has been a hit, while All Over You wasn't ultimately used for anything, so she still owes him. Prince sends Stevie a cassette of what she deemed later to be Purple Rain but she eventually chickens out, so they are back to All Over You. Maybe the episode in which she's ill and he doesn't want her to get too much medicines because she's already too addicted happens at this time (again congruent with her RAL persona). They see each other at the premiere of the Purple Rain movie, where Stevie says to him that the scene of the slap freaked her out. He decides he's fed up with Stevie's strangeness and decides not to call her anymore.
1985 - For some reason Stevie is in possession of All Over You from the Rock a Little sessions' period. Maybe Prince is fed up with her and ditched her the song, maybe he forgot it and doesn't want to contact her even to get the song back or simply isn't interested in it anymore, so Stevie gives it to Atlantic Records where it's been left ever since.
This is the only explanation unless there's another secret song they worked together on later. Which in my opinion is highly unprobable.

The timeline is very confusing. Stevie is adamant that she heard Little Red Corvette on her wedding day on January 29, 1983, which makes sense given that "1999", the album that includes the song, was released just three months before, and the single itself would be released just a week after Stevie's wedding.
BUT, according to the Prince fan community, he worked on Stand Back in the week of January 7-14, 1983 at Studio 55, while he was working on extended versions of Little Red Corvette and Drive Me Wild at neighbouring Sunset Sound studio. To add to the confusion, Stevie claimed in Storytellers that she was at Sunset Sound herself when she called Prince. I don't have the WH liner notes with me right now, but if I remember correctly Sunset Sound was not mentioned as one of the studios where Stevie recorded.
My theory is that they indeed met during the Mirage Tour, and that Stevie simply didn't remember that this encounter had happened before she called him to work on Stand Back.
This was peak coked-out Stevie, so we can't really count on her for such specifics

Thanks, that information is useful.
Yes, Stevie's memory isn't reliable at all, that's why I prefer to base myself on dates of surrounding events. Now that we have the fact-proofing from the Prince fan community we can say with a reasonable certainty that either:
1) Like you said, they met on the Mirage Tour the 23 September in Minneapolis but she didn't remember and then she called him for Stand Back in 1983.
2) They actually met the first time in January for the recording of Stand Back and then Stevie mistook the Fleetwood Mac Mirage Tour for her Wild Heart Tour. In that case they met the second time the 15th of July 1983 in Minneapolis.
From 1984 onwards I stick with my first version.

Yes, thank you for reminding me of this.
Most likely though, she wouldn't tell the truth on this matter anyway. Neither Prince nor Stevie would benefit from being linked in any way at the time, and was just keeping their liaison from becoming public knowledge.
The only reason I'm saying they met is because of the existence of Thousand Days. Stevie could not have written that song about a guy she had never met before coming into a studio for 20 minutes and not saying anything.
"'Thousand Days' was written about my non-relationship with Prince," says Nicks, who had earlier composed "Stand Back" with him - although she notes he's never called her back "to set up his payment on 50%" of the latter. "Days" recounts an abortive, all-night '80s recording session with him at his Minneapolis home during a Fleetwood Mac tour, climaxing with Nicks "smoking my pot - he didn't agree with my lifestyle - and going to sleep on Prince's floor in his kitchen. I like him, but we were just so different there was no possible meeting ground."
~Billboard Magazine, April 1998
So though the timeline is somewhat confusing, one can come to the conclusion that even if the days/months don't add up, there WAS something more to the story.

No problem.
Now I think the most probable timeline is:
1983 - Stevie and Prince worked on Stand Back in the week of January 7-14, 1983. Like many artists do, he doesn't ask to be credited. During the Wild Heart tour (and not the Mirage Tour like she remembers), on the 15th of July 1983 in Minneapolis, Stevie returns the favor and records the overdubs of All Over You at Prince's house. This episode described by Billboard in 1998:
“‘Thousand Days’ was written about my non-relationship with Prince,” says Nicks, who had earlier composed “Stand Back” with him - although she notes he’s never called her back “to set up his payment on 50%” of the latter. “Days” recounts an abortive, all-night '80s recording session with him at his Minneapolis home during a Fleetwood Mac tour, climaxing with Nicks “smoking my pot - he didn’t agree with my lifestyle - and going to sleep on Prince’s floor in his kitchen. I like him, but we were just so different there was no possible meeting ground.”
somehow fits even better her Wild Heart persona.
1984 - During the Rock a Little sessions Prince sends Stevie the alleged Purple Rain cassette. She can't comply and then they return to All Over you. The episode narrated by Details in 1994:
[About seeing him again after stand Back]Yes, when I was on the road a year or so later. I was sick, and Prince brought some cough syrup up to my hotel room. He was sweet–he walked around the room folding things, fluffing pillows, tidying up in general. Then he gave me a spoon of it himself. But when I asked for another spoonful he changed–he said, “I didn’t come all the way up here just to get you hooked on another substance!” Then he left.
might fit with her RAL persona. Then, as stated by Stevie she went to the premiere of Purple Rain and Prince got offended by the fact that she freaked out because of the slap scene and never saw her again.
1985 - Stevie is left with the cassette of All Over You from the RAL sessions with Prince and decides to deliver it to her company Atlantic Records.

Do we know for sure that the FM tour that Stevie and Prince met on was Mirage? It couldn't have been Tusk? They played Minneapolis then, too. Otherwise I'm not sure how they would have already been friends in time for the WWD tour.
It's also worth noting that in the E017 clip, Stevie says she doesn't even remember any of this happening - that her goddaughter was there and told this story, presumably sometime after the fact. So I mean, quite possibly, by the time Stevie started telling the Stand Back story, she also didn't remember that she knew Prince before then  Or maybe the Goddaughter imagined that Prince was there.

Hilariously enough yes, then she might very well have met him during the Tusk Tour. Or The Bella Donna Tour, again her memory isn't something to hold on to. But what age was her goddaughter then? She might not remember each time from other well, or maybe she just recounted the episode to Stevie and Stevie assumed it was the Bella Donna HBO while it was the Mirage HBO, or even something different. The only revealing detail we have is the fact that he was apparently dressed in purple. When did Prince started wearing purple on stage?

I don't really think that's Stevie's shawl either, but she seems so adamant that I messaged her to ask her to explain.
However if we really want to be honest, all of the outerwear above is damn ugly.

I don't know, I guess since Prince usually doesn't wear shawls and Stevie does and that really looks like a tipical Stevie shawl then it may have been a gift from Stevie. It's not so wild, Stevie often gives to friends things made for them.
The image is a bit more interesting. Maybe it isn't truly Stevie but someone made a sketch that resembled her and it ended up being used as a backdrop.

call me suspicious but I would doubt it was actually her shawl; but could definitely have been inspired by her shawls.
More than inspired, it may be a gift Stevie could have made do for Prince with a flowery pattern he would have liked and the typical structure of her shawls that she likes so much and in her mind he could have appreciated for a change.
Or simply Prince for one night desired misteriously a shawl.

One of my favorite Prince songs is 17 Days and I've always thought that there were certain similarities to her Thousand Days and his 17 Days.
I always wondered if the bit
You're the one who's always lonely
But I'm the one
Who's always alone
was about her, because that sounds so like her... she's always going on about how lonely the road is, how lonely her house is, men can't take her lifestyle, etc etc etc.
And
I called you yesterday
You didn't answer your phone
The main drag
Is knowing that
You probably weren't alone

However Olive there's no need to get defensive about me posting about the subject, I wasn't writing directed towards you, or else I would have named you openly. If I don't, then I'm just posting for everyone to see.
Anyway I don't think it's Stevie shawl at all, but thinking about their styles and the fact that probably they have talked about their fashion, it may very well be intended for the shawl to be similar to Stevie's.
The face may be a different matter, that's what I find most curious. If it was sketched by Prince he may have unconsciously drawn Stevie's face.

I don't know, that's what I was asking myself too, but you seemed to have mistook that I was saying the shawl was Stevie's, while I didn't, and you kept saying it was not, which I think too, so I thought the only reason you might do so is that you thought I was insisting.

Or she cornered him after the film and then freaked out. Hmm...

Stevie may take pictures of everything but Prince surely did not. He's known to be reserved at the highest levels.
And besides, Lindsey had a relationship with Anne Heche but there aren't photos either. However I don't think they really had a relationship, I think they just hang out together.

While browsing in the Blue Letter Archive I found another quote by Stevie on Prince in which her recollection of the Prince night is a little different, in particular he picked her up not in Minneapolis but in New York:
You wanna hear a story about Prince? One time we played New York and he came and picked me up . . . he wanted to take me out to his house. Of course none of my people wanted to just let me go. Nine-thirty in the morning. We get in Prince's purple car. He was in his purple clothes too. Swear to God. I had halfway gotten out of my stage clothes, but I still had the skirt on, and tennis shoes . . . I get in his car, and we're, I kid you not, in Minnesota. We went down the freeway at 150 miles an hour. And I am, like, "We're gonna get pulled over. This is gonna look so bad. We're gonna get pulled over, Prince. We're going 150 miles an hour." So I went out and spent the day at his purple house. We kind of played around with a song for a little while, in his recording studio a little bit, and then he took me back to be at the Fleetwood Mac plane at, like, three o'clock in the afternoon. I made it back on time to take off and go to the next gig. But I swore we were gonna be pulled over. And how are we gonna . . . looking like we look . . . how are we going to get out of this one? What are we gonna say? We were, you know, we were just casually cruising out to your house, you know . . . at 150 miles an hour. Prince, we're gonna go to jail, both of us. He didn't care. He kept going. - Q104.3 Radio Interview 5/7/2001

Stevie Nicks ‘Stands Back’ While Prince Works His Magic: 365 Prince Songs in a Year
To celebrate the incredibly prolific, influential and diverse body of work left behind by Prince, we will be exploring a different song of his each day for an entire year with the series 365 Prince Songs in a Year.
Even on the day in 1983 that she married now ex-husband Kim Anderson, Stevie Nicks couldn’t refuse her muse. As the couple drove out to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon, Nicks heard Prince’s “Little Red Corvette,” his big hit at the time off of 1999, on the radio. She spent the rest of the night writing the song it inspired: “Stand Back,” which she recorded for 1983’s The Wild Heart.
“It just gave me an incredible idea, so I spent many hours that night writing a song about some kind of crazy argument, and it was to become one of the most important of my songs,” Nicks wrote in the liner notes for her greatest hits album Timespace in 1991. “I’ve been doing this song for years, Fleetwood Mac does it also, and I never get tired of it. ‘Stand Back’ has always been my favorite song onstage, because…when it starts, it has an energy that comes from somewhere unknown…and it seems to have no timespace. I’ve never quite understood this sound…but I have NEVER questioned it.”
And while the Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter technically wrote it, she’s long admitted the song “belongs” to Prince, whose synthesizer work is even on the recording, but never received a credit on the album. Once it was written borrowing the “Little Red Corvette” melody, she called Prince, told him of her inspiration, and asked him if he would meet her at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Twenty minutes later, he was there.
“I didn’t have to call and tell him that I kind of ripped off his song, but I did because I’m honest,” she told Billboard. Nicks played the song for him and asked if he hated it.
“He said, ‘No,’ and walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about 25 minutes, and then left,” she told Timothy White for his 1991 book Rock Lives. “He was so uncanny, so wild, he spoiled me for every band I’ve ever had because nobody can exactly re-create — not even with two piano players —what Prince did all by his little self.
The song went to No. 5 in the U.S. Billboard Top 100, and it marked the beginning of a long relationship, though the two didn’t spend a lot of time together. At one point, following a Fleetwood Mac show, she was flattered to realize Prince was putting the moves on her.
“We get into his purple Camaro and bomb out onto the freeway at 100 m.p.h. I’m terrified, but kind of excited too,” she recalled, but quickly added that things stayed platonic. “I get on the plane and the rest of the band are like [drum fingers, rolls eyes],” she laughed. “I’m like, ‘What? Nothing happened.’”
Nonetheless, their musical collaboration “turned into a really amazing relationship. Is my heart broken? Absolutely,” Nicks told Billboard after Prince’s death, and noted that she regrets having never performed the song live with him.
One thing they disagreed on was drug use: “He hated them. And he hated that I did drugs and that’s probably why we didn’t hang out more,” she told the Associated Press. “He was worried that I would die of an accidental drug overdose and my sadness is that he did die of an accidental drug overdose. He’s up there looking down, saying to me, ‘Sweetie, I can’t believe it happened either.'”
As she began a tour in September 2016, Nicks acknowledged that performing her hit will take on new resonance. “I will be singing it for the first time without Prince being on the planet,” she continued. “That is going to be horrible, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to pay homage to my ‘Little Red Corvette’ friend. I’ll sing it forever for him now.”
“Stand Back” wasn’t their last attempt at a collaboration. After working together on her song, she asked him if they might ever write a song together. In response, Prince sent Nicks a demo of the title track to the soundtrack for Purple Rain, asking her to write lyrics for the music.
“It was so overwhelming, that 10-minute track, that I listened to it and I just got scared,” Nicks remembered. “I called him back and said, ‘I can’t do it. I wish I could. It’s too much for me.’ I’m so glad that I didn’t, because he wrote it, and it became ‘Purple Rain.’”
There was also a demo, posted to Fleetwood Mac’s YouTube channel on the day of Prince’s death, that was reportedly recorded by the pair but never released. It’s called “All Over You.”
