Noooooooo. Holy sh!t.
That's so sad. A real genius- I've only recently 'discovered him'.
As I'm sure will be mentioned many times over in the coming weeks- his performance with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, Steve Winwood and Dani Harrison at the Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison: a genius musician at work;

I might just take a nap until January, because it's becoming clear that this year just isn't working out.
That's what I said when they broke into Young & The Restless this p.m. with the news. Last I heard he had the flu, went to the hospital & was released. He even did a show afterward. This is just terrible. I always wanted to see him in concert; he always put on quite a show so I heard. So sad. :distress:

Here's the Billboard write up...
Prince died earlier today (April 21) at age 57 at his Paisley Park home and studio, his publicist confirmed to the Associated Press. TMZ first reported the news.
Prince was hospitalized last week after his plane for was forced to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill. Released a few hours later, a rep told TMZ that he had been battling a bad case of the flu.
One of the most iconic musicians in music history, Prince's extensive career grew out of the music scene of his native Minneapolis, where he lived his entire life. His 1978 debut album For You and self-titled second LP, released in October 1979, kicked off an incredibly prolific run of albums that included 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, Sign O The Times and Batman, among others, throughout the 1980s at a clip of nearly one per year, evolving with each release.
It was 1984's Purple Rain -- his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 -- released in conjunction with the film of the same name, that cemented him as one of the greatest artists of his generation, earning him two Grammys, and Oscar and a victory over Michael Jackson's Thriller for Favorite Pop/Rock Album at the 1985 American Music Awards. Along the way, he worked with several bands under a series of pseudonyms, including The Time, the New Power Generation and The Revolution, as both front man and producer.
Prince was also known for his eponymous Love Symbol, created in protest against his longtime record label Warner Bros., under which he released an album in 1992. His 18th and final album for the label, 1996's Chaos and Disorder, finally released him from his contract.
As a recording artist, Prince was legendary for his prolific and perfectionist nature which allowed him to release a steady slew of material as he experimented in the studio; as a result, unreleased b-sides and bootlegs have become highly sought-after collectibles for die-hard fans, and his infamous "vault" of recordings has become the stuff of legend. Yet he was also truly transcendent as a performer, regularly stretching his shows beyond the three-hour mark and showcasing his stunning guitar work, which became an underrated part of his legacy, often overshadowed by his iconic singing voice and abilities as a songwriter and bandleader.
Over his 35-plus-year career, he released 39 solo studio albums and never stopped releasing new material
Since September 2014, he put out four new full-length records with his latest band, 3rd Eye Girl, continuously experimenting with psychedelic rock and intergalactic funk.
Prince's legacy as a musician, a singer, a style icon and an endlessly creative mind is nearly unparalleled, and his influence stretches from pop to R&B to funk to hip-hop and everywhere in between. Purple Rain was the first of four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200; an additional 12 LPs peaked in the top 10 in four different decades.

I was never a huge Prince fan but realize and understand his musical genius. Stevie loved Little Red Corvette so much that she wrote one of her biggest songs and asked him to play on it. In addition, Stevie added the line "I know what it sounds like when doves cry" live during Edge of 17. She was playing on her doves and his doves.
During Red Beard's interview in 2013, Christine McVie admitted being a huge Prince fan and Rasberry Beret was one of her favorite songs ever. Chris told the story that she woke up in a hotel room sometime in 1985 and MTV was on and Prince's video was on and she instantly loved the song and felt like dancing.

Stunned. We've been getting this news all the time for months but I never would have thought Prince. Only 57 and seemed in relatively good shape. When Michael Jackson died at 49 it was a shock but he had been living a self destructive lifestyle for years and had a lot of personal issues. I thought Prince was vegan and living a relatively quiet life. He was very private. Though he had not had major chart success lately I presume he was still very wealthy and could afford the best care for health issues.
*(I am now seeing conflicting estimates of his wealth. Who knows?)
He had the 'bad boy' image in the 1980s that inspired Michael Jackson into roughening up his image and sound. It was ironic how those roles reversed in time because Prince hardly even seemed to age. But yet another reminder of mortality even this day and age whoever you are. I've recently had a major personal loss and this time has been a real shakeup for me in general.

IIRC, Prince had NOT been healthy at all during his life. He needed hip replacements (both sides) and also had seizures as a kid. His latest comments were very prophetic though.

I guess there will be a health report. I saw he had bad hips from performing for years in heels because he was so little (he apparently refused surgery requiring blood transfusions because of his religious beliefs) , and he did have some tragedy in his life - a son who died not long after birth. In recent years he probably could have been a lot more visible in his career if he had done more self marketing but he didn't seem interested. Like Michael Jackson, despite his onstage flamboyance he seemed shy in person.
I think he became friends with Stevie but disapproved of her drug habits at that time. And she had some sharp words with him when he suggested she raunch herself up a bit. Seemingly an odd pair but I guess both natural eccentrics and small in stature. Like Stevie he seemed to be a bit vain but I guess being out there in front of people it's understandable. I like the song they did together and it seemed to help lead Stevie into a new direction for herself post FM. Rest in peace Mr Prince Rodgers Nelson. Such a sad year for all fans of music.

Very sad news.
A remarkable talent most especially on 1999, Purple Rain
and Around The World In A Day. For some reason after
that he seemed to get lost. Then the fight with his record company
didn't help. He was probably on the right side of the fight, but it
seem to cost him his incredible vision.
I saw him on Tavis Smiley and lost some of my admiration for his
intellect. Some of the interviews were eye-opening. Never knew
him to be one that believed in certain conspiracies and such.
He didn't look healthy is these past few years.
My memories of him will be from Purple Rain and how he was the

There are many stories going around right now. I don't know what to think and I don't like to say something that is not yet confirmed and might just be speculation. Many are questioning how this could happen when he was just 57 - was there something we did not know about?
He was a very private person who kept an air of mystery about himself much of the time. But there will be a full investigation into what happened by the local sheriff's department, and I expect it will be reported in due time.

Some of Stevie's stories about Prince over the years:
Prince played synth on your 1983 single Stand Back, which you had written by singing new words and a new melody to his Little Red Corvette. What do you remember about the session with him at Sunset Sound?
I remember him playing basketball outside like one of the Harlem Globetrotters. He was spinning the ball on his finger and throwing it backwards into the net. In terms of the actual recording he was super-quick, Unfortunatatley we couldn’t keep him locked-down there forever (laughs).
But he later sent you the backing track for Purple Rain, asking you if you wanted to write something to it..
lt was a cassette – and I’ve still got it – with the whole instrumental track and a little bit of Prince singing “Can’t get over that feeling.” or something. But it was 10 minutes long with the big guitar solo and I was overwhelmed. I told him, “Prince, I’ve listened to this a hundred times but I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s a movie,
So you turned down what became Prince’s defining song?
Right, Bit I always feel like there’s a little bit of me in it. The olive branch of him giving me that cassetee was huge, but I think he would have liked a romance with me, too.
Wow. Were you flattered?
Very flattered. I remember Fleetwood Mac were in Minneapolis on tour one time and Prince came and got me right after the show. I’ m still in my chiffon stage outfit and he’s in his purple stage outfit. We get in his purple Camaro and bomb out onto the freeway at 100mph. I’m terrified, but kind of excited, too: “****, we’re gonna get pulled over!” So we get to his purple house and he has a studio downstairs and we try to write a song together. But I’ve just done a show and I’m tired, so I go upstairs and sleep on the floor of his purple kitchen. In the morning he wakes me up and I have some coffee and I sing a little part on the song. But I’ve got to be at the airport by 2pm to take-off with Fleetwood Mac, and you do not miss that plane. We get into the purple Camaro again. Prince bombs it down the freeway and right out on to the tarmac alongside our private jet. He comes around to open my door and we hug goodbye, but we both look like crazy people. I get on the plane and the rest of the band are like (drums fingers, rolls eyes). I’m like, “What? Nothing happened.
------
Details: Really? What about you and Prince?
Stevie Nicks: Let me state this here and now: We did not have a sexual relationship--I did not let that happen.
Details: How did you meet?
Stevie Nicks: When we were recording "Stand Back" I decided to be really blatant and call Prince up and tell him that I had been inspired to write the song while listening to "Little Red Corvette." I told him that I figured my song was half his. He came over to the studio where I was recording and listened to it--as I turned extremely white and started to shake. Then he walked over to the piano and put on a really incredible keyboard track. And not only did Prince make it up right on the spot, he played it with only two fingers. Then he left.
Details: Did you see him again?
Stevie Nicks: Yes, when I was on the road a year or so later. I was sick, and Prince brought some cough syrup up to my hotel room. He was sweet--he walked around the room folding things, fluffing pillows, tidying up in general. Then he gave me a spoon of it himself. But when I asked for another spoonful he changed--he said, "I didn't come all the way up here just to get you hooked on another substance!" Then he left.
Details: Do you still see him?
Stevie Nicks: No. I was at the premiere of Purple Rain, and in the scene where he slaps Apollonia I freaked and had to go sit in the bathroom. Afterward I went back to see him, and when he asked why I'd left, I had to tell him, "When you popped Apollonia, it kinda popped my brain." He looked at me like it just killed him. We've never spoken since. (sighs) It’s a shame, really...we were alike in so many ways.
Details: Such as?
Stevie Nicks: Well, for one thing, we both liked wearing black chiffon around the house.

Prince was very active in the last few years, with several albums and tours, many with dates announced within a day of the gig (if not hours!). ticket prices ranged from extremely cheap for some of the gigs to very very expensive for others, and sold out even though announced so late (usually by Prince on twitter). venues ranged from tiny clubs and theaters to arenas. i saw him last summer and he gave arena-size show in a theater. he came through my area several times last year, first with unexpected peace concert for Baltimore in May, the week of Baltimore riots (http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/baltimore-unrest/freddie-gray-shooting-prince-sets-mothers-day-concert-baltimore-n354356, he was very active on social causes), then he did a small concert in White House in June, followed by two same evening shows in the theater in DC next day. he looked young, energetic, and healthy. i feel extremely lucky that i got to see him when he came through last year, but i never thought that would be the last show of his i would ever have a chance to see.

UPDATE: TMZ is reporting that the emergency landing was not required because of the flu, but rather a drug overdose, and Prince was rushed to the hospital and given a “save shot,” which they say is “typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate.” Their sources say that doctors wanted Prince to stay overnight in the hospital, but he refused when he was told that he could not have a private room. Prince’s representatives have not commented on the matter.

I read that he had his music instruments custom made a smaller size because he was so little? But yes he could play just about all his own instruments when recording, and there are some very interesting live clips with his blistering guitar solos.
In the 80s though it often seemed he and Michael Jackson were being pitted against each other and it was MJ who got most of the attention for his choreography. I mean who could beat that? But Prince could sure put on a funky show.
He seemed like something of a control freak to the end. I could sympathize -the way we purchase and listen to music has changed so much in a few decades. When I was a kid it was still mainly vinyl. I still personally think that vinyl sounds the BEST but in our modern busy lives everyone is listening to other more 'convenient' formats. Music has been pushed much to the background though and become like a jingle that doesn't require much of the listener. There are some exceptions like Adele who is still doing albums built around concepts. But a lot now seems to be short disposable mp3s and you don't have to lift a needle to go from one track to another. You just press a button and it's instant. So is the purchase and download. But it can all be a rather souless listening experience.
And I've fallen into it too. Though when Prince said that digital music was benfiting the big money hungry companies rather than the creative artists he probably had a point and was making a truthful observation.
There were times when I thought of him get real man it's no longer the 80s times have changed, and now people are very confused as to how they can actually obtain his music. But that was just Prince.
It may take several weeks to get the full results of what happened. But taking painkillers while experiencing flu symptoms can be quite risky. I hope he wasn't doing that just to fulfil gig commitments.

I hope they will let us know what happen to him and about his treatment.
Apparently Percocet had everything to do with it and Chemtrails nothing....
The "Save Shot" he got was apparently for a Percocet OD while flying back from ATL last week. He landed in Moline Il , they rushed him to hospital, gave him a shot and three hours later he was flying back to Chanhassen, MN.

Well, I heard L A Reid touch on this a bit tonight, but I was telling my husband earlier tonight about the lyrics to Lets Go Crazy. You really have to read them, really read into them. L A Reid said that Prince told him that he thought of an elevator as the devil, but I think Prince knew he was going to die in an elevator. This whole song is about his death. "Are we going to let the elevator bring us down, Oh no let's go." "You better live now before the grim reaper come knocking on your door". " Dr. Everything'' be alright - Will make everything go wrong - Pills & thrills & daffodils will kill - Hang tough children. He's coming He's coming. (Prince was spiritual) "A world of never ending happiness - You can always see the sun, day or night (going to heaven of course). When he says, "Lets go Crazy, lets get nuts" he means, party on, don't mourn me - celebrate (which a lot of people did last night). My husband just says, oh you're a groupie. I only have this one CD, Purple Rain. Then my husband says, well I don't know, maybe.

Just finished listening to Ground Zero show was about Prince. Brought out odd details surrounding his death. The Queens 90th birthday, the multiple trips to Walgreens, I forget what else, but I believe there will be a podcast. The last time he was seen 8pm Wednesday, then found slumped in the elevator next day. The whole thing left me feeling suspicious. Seems like too many odd coincidences or maybe just a matter of finding what you go looking for. Could he have been that distraught over Vanity's death? Oh well, anyway... a hugh loss, for sure.

You are allowed to express an opinion that is your own and is always welcomed . I did not see it as derailment you were not trying to push a blog or new topic I felt it is part of the Topic What makes someone "embellish" their story ? I assumed for the most part an assistant or publicist wrote it , or the " don't speak ill of the dead , or maybe just a way to grasp a shred of attention
I am confused more by the hysterics, the need to gather , the emotional break down people have .... it is sad and understandable when anyone passes who you had an actual relationship with , but the breakdown over celebrities / strangers the make shift memorial building , candle vigils i can't seem to comprehend it with out suspecting some form of mental illness Maybe Some one can explain it to me
as for Stevie's stories It's just that ,, stories . I no longer believe what she says , I've heard it all too , Especially all the "projects she is working on " I just sit back and wait , and apeciate it when she produces something ( except a greatest hits cd/ tour)

I'm not a news channel person, but I see CNN is the station with seemingly near non-stop coverage right now. Perhaps they were discussing that coverage. I like to think the island of Mustique is filling up this year, but maybe some folks are exercising the personal decision to avoid suffering from fatal/incurable disease, particularly in the public eye.
I thought this was interesting from the unpublished RS interview:

I don't understand her need to use that particular language "I did not let that happen". Why say it that way? I mean, jeeps, she slept with everyone else on the planet.... why say it like "I did not go there" as if it were a bad thing or something? Because he's black? It just makes me wonder. Well, the question that she was responding to was very leading, implicating they had a sexual relationship. So I took it that she was just trying to clarify before she talked about him so their friendship wasn't further misconstrued as something more than it was.
Maybe, since, like you said, she slept with everyone else on the planet, it was a big deal for Stevie that she exercised some self-control and kept that one relationship professional (as professional as falling asleep on someone's kitchen floor can be, anyway - this is Stevie we're talking about). She clearly respected him as an artist and had a great deal of affection for him as a person, so maybe she didn't want people to be under the impression that she'd used him or something like that.
Also - this interview was from the mid-90s. I'm not sure Stevie was all that candid about her sexual exploits back then. Even now it's not like she's in the habit of listing off people she's slept with... she mentions her affairs/relationships but always in pretty vague terms.
Or maybe she's a racist. Or maybe she's a hypocrite and thought Prince was too promiscuous or something. It's anyones guess.

"Yeah, Prince's music was alright, I liked it, he seemed like a pretty cool guy mostly, sorry to hear that."

I think we may have to be prepared for anything from his final report. It's possible there are issues Prince was hiding possibly for a long time and maybe that is part of the reason why he became somewhat reclusive and concerned about privacy. He was only 57 years old so there is a big question mark. But I will wait for final results.

Today Channel 7 indicated that Prince died from the Aids virus, recently hospitalized with like flu symptoms and using prescription pain meds, my guess he knew his time was up and wanted to die at home .. Rest his soul, so sad.
He toured here in Oz not so long ago, giving only 3 weeks notice that he was coming..
Apparently his estate is worth $150 mil,

I saw it on Channel 10 too. But they once reported as a leading item that Brangelina were breaking up and it wasn't true. The story seems to come from the National Enquirer (Radaronline is also affiliated with that magazine). When Michael Jackson died there were many claims made in tabloids about his physical condition. Some were true, some were very exaggerated.
I am going to wait for official reports still. Part of me is thinking maybe this is the real reason why he became so private in later years and turned to religion. But then if he knew he was dying why didn't he make a will?
Whatever caused this, it's very sad and we have lost another great artist.

I think he was ill but didn't think he would die so soon, in fact he started to work on his biography a little more than a month ago but as many already said he didn't left behind a will.
I bet it was a terminal illness.

Daily Mail is another tabloid u know and it seems they are all getting their info from the National Enquirer. When Michael Jackson died they claimed he weighed only 8 stone. He was actually 136 pounds.
Btw the National Enquirer also tried to say that Bowie died from AIDS.
The official report could take a few weeks. It could be true but I don't regard it as confirmed yet. The rumors started before he died though. A blind item appeared just days before his death about an African American celebrity - not Magic Johnson - very sick with AIDS.
And then there are already the predictable theories that he was murdered by an organization like the Illuminati.
Interestingly, one story says that Prince was a Fleetwood Mac and Santana fan before he was famous. So that is even before his collaboration with Ms Nicks.

they said on the news his sister went to a lawyer and wants everything divided equally among her and their half siblings Providing what the state laws are they ( the state ) can take all of it
Minnesota, like ALL states, has specific Intestancy Laws (intestate means you pass without a will). Since he has no living parents and no children and/or spouse, the ONLY ones left to consider are: Siblings and half-siblings, known as half-relatives. From what I can see, his sister and half-siblings (relatives) will be splitting the shares of the estate. Allegedly, the estate is $300 million, BUT that will be determined through estate accounting rules and an estate tax return will also have to be filed within 9 months of death unless there's an extension. Uncle Sam will also be getting a LOT of $$$. I have the feeling that his sister Tyka will be running the show as the Executor. NOTE that an alleged Love Child in his 30s (male) is claiming that Prince is his dad from a fling Prince had with the man's mother in the 80s. IF this is true, then said LOVE child gets it ALL!! So, the alleged Love Child would knock out the siblings and half-siblings IF true. Remember, its all about the $$$......
Segue here, BUT news is reporting that he had prescription drugs in his home and on his self at time of death. I'm gathering that IF it wasn't his epilepsy, it was an OD from the way they're making it sound. The Enquirer is now saying that AIDS killed Prince. I suggest we let this all just run its course and wait for the official autopsy report and lab findings.

This just in...
MINNEAPOLIS – A Minnesota judge appointed a corporate trust company on Wednesday to temporarily oversee Prince's multimillion-dollar estate, saying the emergency appointment was necessary because the superstar musician doesn't appear to have a will and immediate decisions must be made about his business interests.
Judge Kevin Eide granted a request from Prince's sister to appoint Bremer Trust as special administrator, giving the company authority to manage and supervise Prince's assets and identify his heirs. Eide said Prince had no appointed personal representative but had substantial assets and owned businesses that require immediate attention and ongoing management.
The judge also noted that identities and addresses of Prince's heirs need to be determined. Prince's only full sibling, Tyka Nelson, requested the move Tuesday, telling the court she believed her brother didn't have a will. Prince also has five surviving half-siblings who could share in the estate.
Eide wrote that Prince died "intestate," meaning he did not have a valid will, and said there was no pending application or petition for probate of a will in any court. However, someone could still come forward with a will or trust document, which happened after Michael Jackson died in June 2009. Jackson's longtime lawyer John Branca filed a will six days after his death, upending moves by Jackson's mother to become his estate's executor based on her assumption there wasn't a will.
For now, Bremer Trust will act as special administrator for six months or until a personal representative is appointed, whichever is less.
Later Wednesday, the estate already had its first claim against it, with a filing from a California man who claimed that Prince had transferred ownership of his music catalog to him in 1995.
Prince, 57, died last week at Paisley Park, his famous home and recording studio complex in suburban Minneapolis. His cause of death hasn't been released. An autopsy was conducted Friday, but results aren't expected to be released for weeks.
The value of his estate isn't known. Prince made hundreds of millions of dollars for record companies, concert venues and others, and the outpouring of grief and nostalgia after his death prompted fans to buy 2.3 million of his songs in just three days.
Prince also owned a dozen properties in Minnesota, most of it undeveloped land and some houses for relatives, worth about $27 million, according to public records. He also sold more than 100 million albums, and concert industry magazine Pollstar reported that in the years Prince's tours topped the charts — 10 years over four decades performing — they raked in $225 million in ticket sales.
But it's not clear how much money Prince had when he died, given that he had to pay record labels and staff and cover other expenses.
On Wednesday, Eide said Bremer Trust was in the best position to handle Prince's estate. The judge noted that its affiliate, Bremer Bank, had worked with Prince and has knowledge of his personal and business finances.
The judge said Nelson and one of Prince's half-brothers, Omarr Baker, were part of the telephone conference that prompted his decision Wednesday. The judge said no one objected to appointing a special administrator.
Under Minnesota law, if a person dies without a will — and with no surviving parents, children, or grandchildren — the next people in line to share in the estate are the surviving siblings, including half-siblings. Prince wasn't married and had no known living children.

Just because his sister says there was no will doesn't mean there isn't one...
Michael Jacksons mother tried the same thing and a short time later...SURPRISE a will turned up...
From what I read in the Time article I posted If Prince had set up any trusts or corporations lack of a will might not be as big a deal as everyone thinks...
The stipulations of any existing trusts are independent of any will (or lack of)...
Let's say Prince set up "Paisley Park Corporation" It's possible that the corporation owns "Paisley Park" (Residence & Studios) The record label (New Power Generation) He also may have set it up that his record lable NPG owns all of his music (Publishing /Recordings) somewhere in the corporate paperwork it may specify what will happen if he dies.
Prince seems to have been a meticulous planner...So I would imagine he just didn't plan for anything...

Meticulous enough NOT to have a simple will or trust???
Now there's rumor that IF he has an illegitimate child an IF this is true, then the child GETS IT ALL!!
Here's the thing. Dying INTESTATE (without a will) makes it hardest on the loved ones who try to "recreate" what Prince intended. Given the fact that he had NO will means that the court is "left" to clean up the mess LEFT when there is no trust or will to "instruct" the court what to do. The real difficult part of this that COULD HAVE and SHOULD HAVE been negated is this: All he had to do is a holograhpic will (self-written) , properly witnessed and notarized and this would all go away. NOW, its going to cost perhaps $millions to clean up the mess.

It appears that a thorough investigation is being conducted. Authorities have obtained a sealed search warrant of his home. They do not want the details reported by the media amid all the public interest, as they believe this could taint the investigation.
Even though suicide or foul play doesn't seem to be suspected, the investigation now seems to have turned into a 'criminal probe'. http://www.startribune.com/carver-county-judge-seals-search-warrants-in-prince-death-investigation/377456111/
It doesn't necessarily mean that charges will be filed, but does seem to allow for greater protection of the information found for the time being.
For someone who was often described as something of a control freak, I'm a bit surprised that he could leave his affairs in some apparent disarray. But some reports are saying that in recent years Prince had become fearful of signing any legal documents because he felt he might be 'screwed over'.
Official autopsy reports of most celebrities usually seem to find their way to the media, whether it is really our business or not. I was close to someone who passed away at age 32 from flu and prescribed opiate overdose. It can well cause complications. If he had an illness as has been suggested but not confirmed, well that didn't seem to affect Freddie Mercury's legacy. If a clear cause is not given people sometimes just keep speculating and making up their own theories. But it might take some time to know exactly what happened. I am skeptical about current reports in the meantime.
I was not the biggest fan of Prince but he sure was popular in my time and wow what a guitar player. That is being mentioned in many tributes.

Some of his best work was said to still be unreleased.
I was in a random chat the other day, and someone said they had a friend who worked for Prince, and he hadn't been well for a few weeks.
His personal chef has also spoken to the media http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/princes-chef-says-singer-always-7875615
In February however he was here in Australia. That is a long flight that can give serious jetlag. However, there were no real signs in the local reports that anything was wrong with him. He was very thin but then he always had been.
He performed at the Sydney Opera House, the tickets selling out very quickly. The shows weren't his usual fare - just him and a piano on the stage. He came out with a walking cane to start the show and just played all his hits on the piano.
I am wondering if he was doing these performances as a type of 'experiment', just as Madonna appeared to be experimenting with her own show when she was here, perhaps planning for a less physically taxing show in the future.
Australian audiences can be very picky, but the shows received generally good reviews, though some audiences complained that the shows they went to were cut short. At the time it was speculated that this was because he was upset about the death of his former girlfriend Vanity.
http://fasterlouder.junkee.com/the-reviews-are-in-for-princes-breathtaking-piano-and-microphone-tour/857569
I remember him saying years ago that he thought Michael Jackson should do a stripped down, simpler version of his stage shows focusing more on his singing and engaging with the audience.
His former wife Mayte has said that he always wore extremely high heels, even off stage. That hurts for me to even think about. He was only five foot two or three. Of course that can cause hip problems. But there seems to be a lot of general confusion about what was really ailing him.

Hell, there's prescription meds in my house... pain meds from a dental surgery, pain meds from a physical injury, prescription anti biotics from when I last was sick, etc etc. I love how the media makes it sound like no one but an addict has Rx meds in their house. :distress: Need to just wait for the autopsy report.

A few more clips of Prince have appeared on youtube recently. It would be nice if his piano and microphone concert could be put on DVD - there seem to be very few pieces of it on youtube. (Most concerts you go to these days nearly everyone seems to have a camera but Prince seemed quite strict about not having them at his shows.)
Prince and his piano skills:
<iframe width="427" height="240" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SErtl9N5kdY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Also found this and wow - this is so wicked. It's like 'Motherless Child' mixed with 'Take Me To The River'. You can hear so many shades of past performers and he had such a big, adaptable vocal range. Even though he was so small, he owned the stage definitively.
Whatever he may or may not have been, he sure was a character. I don't know if we'll see as much of that with artists in the future. The Internet has homogenized so many things in our culture. (Glad I grew up when I did and there were still these very unique people!)

"We would like everyone to know that, contrary to previous and current reports, there has been no memorial, funeral or tribute service for Prince that was organized or authorized by the family or Paisley Park representatives. Together, the family is planning an official memorial service and public event to take place in the near future."
"Prince and his music influenced so many people that we feel inspired to celebrate his life and legacy in just the right way. We appreciate the public's patience and have been comforted by your outpouring of love, support and condolences. We look forward to sharing with the world this celebration of, and farewell to, our Prince. Details will be coming soon."

That's what I thought when I heard that help had arrived just hours too late - why was he allowed to be left alone in that condition, when he'd already overdosed just a week earlier? If you are having to take that amount of pills you are constant risk of overdose. It's just too sad to think about really. :(
But then it's likely he didn't want someone with him 24hours/day, and it does sound as though the people close to him were doing everything they could to help, it just wasn't quite enough.
Highly addictive painkillers and the frequency with which they are prescribed is a horrid problem. I can't help but feel blame towards the pharmaceutical companies that are making so much money from these drugs - and they must be aware of how many lives they are wrecking.

Agreed. I think that due to this case it might become more a topic of public discussion and they appear to be doing a very thorough investigation.
Prince was such a private person, I think he would have hated going to rehab and the public being aware of it. He may have been trying to deal with this issue on his own but that is very difficult.
I know he was always supposed to be very opposed to recreational drugs, but prescription drugs can be just as hazardous if they are abused.
At this point I am skeptical about the rumors of illness. If that were the case I do not know how he could have recently travelled half way around the world and done a string of practically one man shows with stellar reviews. But who knows? We shall see when the results are in.

Prince had seen a doctor the day before his death last month, according to a police affidavit filed Tuesday.
MINNEAPOLIS — A local doctor who had treated Prince twice in recent weeks showed up at the musician’s estate near here on the morning he died, only to discover that he had just been pronounced dead after being found collapsed in an elevator of his home, according to a police affidavit.
The doctor, Michael T. Schulenberg, had seen Prince the previous day, April 20, according to the affidavit, which was filed in connection with a search warrant for Prince’s medical records.
The affidavit was filed by an investigator for the sheriff’s office in Carver County, where Prince lived. Dr. Schulenberg, who practices family medicine, also saw Prince on April 7, the day he canceled a show in Atlanta, the warrant said.
During his two visits, Dr. Schulenberg performed tests and prescribed medication for an undisclosed ailment, the affidavit said. Dr. Schulenberg said he had arrived at Prince’s compound to turn over the test results.
The warrant sought medical records from the North Memorial Medical Center, which is part of the health system where Dr. Schulenberg used to work.
Authorities have not released a cause of death, and have said that a determination might be weeks away. But Dr. Schulenberg’s visit makes clear that Prince was actively receiving medical treatment before his death on April 21. He also was preparing to be treated for an opioid dependency from a California doctor, Howard Kornfeld.
The doctor’s son, Andrew Kornfeld, and two friends of Prince initially found him collapsed. Andrew Kornfeld, who works for his father’s treatment center, had rushed on an overnight flight from San Francisco to get Prince enrolled in treatment, according to William Mauzy, a lawyer for the Kornfelds, who said the star’s representatives had sought the help.
Dr. Schulenberg, 46, has been licensed to practice in Minnesota since 1997. He has no disciplinary history, according to state records, and there are no allegations of wrongdoing on his part.
Lesa Bader, a spokeswoman for Dr. Schulenberg’s most recent employer, North Memorial Health Care, said she could not comment on Prince’s treatment because of medical privacy laws. Dr. Schulenberg worked for North Memorial when Prince was found dead but is no longer employed by the medical system. Ms. Bader said the hospital does not comment on personnel matters.
Telephone messages left for Dr. Schulenberg were not returned.
The affidavit lays out Prince’s earlier medical concerns. Kirk Johnson, a close friend, told investigators the star had visited another local hospital in 2014 or 2015 for an undisclosed illness. Mr. Johnson said Prince had received fluids during his visit.
It is unclear what medications Prince was taking, but people close to him have said he suffered debilitating pain in his hips and elsewhere from decades of intense performances. Authorities have said they are investigating what role painkillers might have played in his death.
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States attorney’s office in Minneapolis have joined the inquiry.
After postponing the April 7 show in Atlanta because he said he had the flu, he did a makeup performance the following week that observers described as electrifying. But Prince complained of stomach pains after the concert. And on his flight home, his private jet had to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill., because he fell ill.
His publicist said the emergency landing was a result of the flu. But emergency records showed that the pilot radioed that an unresponsive passenger was on board. Prince was carried off the plane by his bodyguard, the records said. Emergency medical personnel treated him with Narcan, which is typically administered to treat opioid overdoses, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the case. The official also said that Prince had powerful painkillers on him when he was found dead.
Despite the medical scare, Prince was seen out and about afterward near his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minn., a suburb here. He hosted a party at the estate on the Saturday before his death. And two days before he was found, he was at a jazz club in Minneapolis taking in a show

I'm not surprised if he overdosed on Percocet. Percocet contains Oxycodone which according to this article is like the legal equivalent of heroin.
http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2002/mar/24/drugsandalcohol.theobserver
These drugs are potentially so dangerous, and people think they are safe because a doctor prescribes them. If you take them long term and end up physically, emotionally and mentally dependent, it must be almost impossible to stop taking it without needing serious help. As tolerance develops you need more and more until you reach overdose levels.
It says in the article above that in the US it's aggressively marketed and in some towns 40% of the population are addicted to it
I have a particular interest in this kind of subject. My degree is in Biochemistry but I chose not to work in the field, as I don't agree with a lot of what is happening in the pharmaceutical industries. On the few occasions I've been given a prescription most have ended up in the bin. (And I know that I'm generalising and I am aware some drugs are lifesavers and even opioids are great in certain circumstances ).
I found this article to be the most informative about how the addiction specialist was trying to help Prince, but it was too late.

Except for Elvis, Michael Jackson and Prince and a few others who could
afford to have Dr. Feelgoods and "yes men" around them. And there needing
to be something done about the ease at which they (their type) get easy access
to such drugs - I disagree with the rest of us being punished for abusers.
It's not just the drugs that they abused. We can't even go in and buy
for ourselves over the counter sinus medication that works. And if
you do have to go to the emergency room, sometimes they're suspicious
you're an addict. I hate that.
I hate being treated like a child. Take some responsibility for yourselves.
I'm tired of paying the price for others mistakes. Feels like we're still in
school when one student gets the whole class in trouble.
I do feel sorry for addicts. Whether their normal people or stars.
But know what you're taking. And then take some responsibility.

I've always maintained that pharmaceuticals can have great uses when they are prescribed and taken the correct way.
As for Madonna. Sometimes I like her, sometimes I can't stand her. I watched her tribute on a small screen and probably bad audio. But I thought she did okay even though she was nervous. It was better than Lady Gaga's tribute to Bowie. Madonna isn't the best singer but that isn't really what she is about. She's an entertainer who shrewdly stays within her natural limits. Her hair is flattering when softer color and style. Her suit in purple/lilac color was demure for a change and not crying out for attention.
To me, the three people who really defined pop in the 80s were Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. So I wasn't upset at Madonna being chosen. She knew Prince for 30 years and though they had some rough patches they seemed like good friends again recently. I believe that Madonna was invited to Paisley Park studios last year.

Still a lot of confusion over what happened and it could still be awhile before there is more information http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2016/05/19/princes-death-day-29-billboard-producers-defend-madonna-tribute/84581426/
However, his personal bodyguard has denied that Prince was addicted to painkillers.
A bit OT sorry but I thought this was odd - Madonna seems to be talking with a southern accent lately? Why is that? It was noticed when she was here in Australia recently too.
In pictures from the tribute it looks like one of her eyes is droopy. I guess that is from cosmetic surgery or fillers.
Madonna is fast becoming a lone survivor among her biggest peers. So many are already gone.
However, Cyndi Lauper is still going and from this, she still sings great. I believe she originally recorded this song written by Prince in two different octaves.

I know this is going off topic slightly on the Prince thread but it's related to my post about pharmaceuticals above.
I spotted a book in the library yesterday - Bad Pharma. I'd heard about it but never read it, I'm now working my way through it. It's very detailed with plenty of statistics, but incredibly informative and thoroughly researched. It's written by a doctor and was on the best sellers lists in the UK in 2012. For anyone interested in the horrendous problems within the pharmaceuticals industry this is a great book.
This is the book's summary on Amazon:
Ben Goldacre puts the $600bn global pharmaceutical industry under the microscope. What he reveals is a fascinating, terrifying mess. ***Now updated with the latest government responses to the book***
Doctors and patients need good scientific evidence to make informed decisions. But instead, companies run bad trials on their own drugs, which distort and exaggerate the benefits by design. When these trials produce unflattering results, the data is simply buried. All of this is perfectly legal. In fact, even government regulators withhold vitally important data from the people who need it most. Doctors and patient groups have stood by too, and failed to protect us. Instead, they take money and favours, in a world so fractured that medics and nurses are now educated by the drugs industry.
The result: patients are harmed in huge numbers.
Ben Goldacre is Britain’s finest writer on the science behind medicine, and ‘Bad Pharma’ is the book that finally prompted Parliament to ask why all trial results aren’t made publicly available – this edition has been updated with the latest news from the select committee hearings. Let the witty and indefatigable Goldacre show you how medicine went wrong, and what you can do to mend it.

Tests show that Prince died of an opioid overdose, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The 57-year-old singer was found dead April 21 at his Minneapolis-area estate.
The official, who is close to the investigation, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The findings confirm suspicions that opioids played a role in the musician's death. After he died, a law enforcement official told the AP that investigators were examining whether an overdose was to blame and whether a doctor had prescribed him drugs in the preceding weeks.

Yes, lots of people wanting quick fix easy solutions to physical or emotional pain (often at a cost), and the pharmaceutical companies are more then happy to oblige.
It sounds as though Prince was suffering from intense withdrawal and the only way of dealing with that was to take more pills, either that or enter the gates of hell.
I think the only way of getting him out of what was possibly a very long term addiction would have been to lock him up and supervise him, something I very much doubt that he wanted.
I've been reading the best selling books about an ex-homeless heroin addict that rescues a cat and gets rescued back - A Street Cat named Bob - and I'm now reading - The World According to Bob. Great books. In his first book he talks about using Suboxone (Buprenorphine) to get off methadone and eventually to get clean. This is the drug the addiction doctor's son had on him when he found Prince. It appears that only some doctors can prescribe it.
http://www.buprenorphine-doctors.com/opioid-dependence.cfm
I found the following descriptions on the website page above:
Opioid dependence is a condition wherein a person cannot stop using these drugs, even if he or she knows they are harmful.
Opioids rearrange brain chemicals to make the person think that the drugs are necessary to survive. This upset in brain chemistry will lead the dependent person to do anything to obtain the drugs.
Some of the most serious symptoms of withdrawal can be deadly. These include cardiac arrest, stroke, seizures, and suicide attempts. The latter in the list is an example of how psychologically distraught an opioid dependent may become after a long period of use.
I can imagine Prince being psychologically distraught and not able to bear the thought of life without this drug.

Just to reiterate... I'm not against all pharmaceuticals - the industry just seems to have gotten way, way out of control.
I find Ibuprofen really helpful at times and codeine only very occasionally - like when I had the most horrendous chest infection and when I trapped my finger in the car door - I was very grateful for opiates on that day.
I was working for a women today that who is dealing with long term intense pain and the doctor keeps suggesting morphine. She keeps refusing, preferring to manage her pain in other ways on different painkillers (non opiates) and possibly an operation.
I know someone who took Morphine for a month and had horrific withdrawal symptoms, but then another women I know took it for 6 months before an operation and seemed to come off it no problem - maybe some people are not so susceptible to addiction.

From the NY Times.
He (Prince) also was preparing to be treated for an opioid dependency from a California doctor, Howard Kornfeld.

Different people become addicted at different rates. Some addicts try to prevent addiction by letting time pass between usages of strong opiates and others feel compelled to use the drug continuously once they start, which walks them straight into addiction. Those coming off heavy fentanyl abuse will often be weaned down to a lower level before going through withdrawal, as unsupported withdrawal from strong opiates can be brutal.

I found this article, written by Andrew Kornfield who found Prince
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/06/03/opinions/man-who-found-prince-kornfeld/
Editor's Note: Andrew Kornfeld graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2013. He studied neuroscience and psychology, and now works with his father at Recovery Without Walls, their addiction outpatient clinic in Mill Valley, California. He is a writer and is currently applying to medical school. The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author.
(CNN) — As the media has duly noted, I am the "pre-med student" who flew out to Minneapolis to help Prince find the road to recovery but who ended up calling 911 instead. Sadly, we now understand from the medical examiner's report that he died from a self-administered dose of the powerful synthetic opioid painkiller, Fentanyl.
I know many of you are eager for details; understandably, you want to know what transpired that day. Believe me, nothing can prepare a person to walk into such chaos and sadness. As I told the 911 dispatcher on April 21, those on the scene were distraught, which was why I was the one to place the call. But what happened has made me think, long and hard, about what steps we must take to prevent such entirely unnecessary loss of life.
From the beginning, my dad, Howard Kornfeld, MD, instilled in me a love for the way life works, in all its beauty and complexity. We spent our days together exploring Northern California's mountains and oceans -- the wonders of the place we call home. The evenings found us in a big comfortable chair, where we pored over images of cells and animals in the pages of a well-thumbed biology textbook. He taught me that health is the foundation to all else, in regard to human life.
While I was finishing elementary school, my dad emerged as a pioneer in the fields of pain and addiction medicine, joining a cadre of physicians who utilized new, evidence-based practices for their opioid-dependent patients. A medication called buprenorphine was at the forefront of their work. Its efficacy in treating addiction has since been well-documented. Patients with opioid addictions have a significantly higher chance of survival when buprenorphine is part of their treatment.
Many people become addicted to opioid painkillers because they are prescribed them as treatment for chronic pain conditions. The media reported that Prince was one such patient. But, as media reports over the last several years have made clear, what begins as a "harmless" short-term prescription of opioids can turn into a long-term dependence.
I have Crohn's Disease, an autoimmune disorder that afflicts the gastrointestinal tract, so I am no stranger to chronic pain. While I am extremely healthy now, during my sickest moments, and in the aftermath of multiple surgeries, there is nothing I wouldn't have done to escape the agony. The millions of individuals who suffer from chronic pain are familiar with this sense of desperation. They run the gamut: your next door neighbors, the celebrities you read about in magazines at the supermarket checkout, and yes -- Prince.
His death was a tragedy beyond words. He was an inspiration to so many, and in the brief time I spent in Minnesota, I saw just how good a friend he was to those closest to him. In the weeks that have passed since April 21, I have thought about what might have produced a different outcome. What if his troubles could have been addressed effectively, and much sooner?
Unfortunately, the timely care Prince may have needed, based on the medical examiner's report, has been difficult to obtain in Minnesota, and in many states in our nation. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, there are 120 buprenorphine prescribers in the state, roughly 2.2 physicians certified to prescribe the drug, per 100,000 persons -- not nearly enough.
Right now, we need medical interventions for opioid dependence and addiction more than ever, because in the U.S. we're losing 28,000 people every year -- a number that would average out to 77 people daily -- to opioid overdoses. In addition, evidence suggests that we must call into question the success of abstinence-only methods.
When a user relapses after "going cold turkey" (the protocol in an abstinence-based program), and then takes a higher dose than he or she previously tolerated, that dose may prove fatal. Treatment with buprenorphine instead not only diminishes the chances of overdose, but also reduces the likelihood that the patient will relapse.
I have learned from my father that when a patient is in withdrawal (especially from opioids or benzodiazepines, which reduce anxiety or sleep problems), he or she will experience intense physical symptoms, coupled with feelings of vulnerability and powerlessness. Because buprenorphine helps to eliminate the craving for opioids, and reduces the brutal symptoms, it can give the patient the opportunity to develop healthy life habits and healing behaviors, which can readily become entrenched.
Over the last two decades, the overwhelming scientific consensus holds that such beneficial brain changes can occur at any time in life. Harnessing the full potential of what scientists call neuroplasticity doesn't happen overnight, and more research is required, but it is possible that part of buprenorphine's success lies in its ability allow such neurological changes to take place.
As I make my plans to apply to medical school, my father's work is foremost in my mind. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made amply evident in announcements over the past two months, we are going to be dealing with the fallout of the opioid crisis for decades. There will be legislative challenges, as well as stigma and misinformation to battle, as we inch toward a meaningful solution.
It is easy to find yourself caught in a web of pain, and difficult to escape. I know this. So do many of my father's patients, treated with buprenorphine, who have mustered the energy and the courage to come join me as we paddle surfboards in the chilly waters off of Northern California's coastline, the sunlight near the horizon interrupted occasionally as near-perfect waves roll in.
What if my father and had been able to reach Prince just a week earlier, like so many others we have helped take back their lives? Prince could have been here, standing on the beach beside me.

Yet to read everything here but Fentanyl sounds like a terrifying drug http://clatl.com/atlanta/metro-atlanta-heroin-growing-more-dangerous/Content?oid=14326432
I'm in hospital and was chatting about it with a nurse. She was quite startled but that's in the medical report.
It can be a very useful pain reliever, but when abused or not administered correctly it can be very dangerous.
I'm in Australia and I think they are stricter about prescription drugs here. Difficult to get anything like Valium or Xanax.
In some ways, Prince had a troubled life. His unstable childhood, being bullied, loss of his only born child. As I said earlier though, he was such a private person, he may have found it very difficult to reach out for support or a rehab. He would've hated people finding out.
At least AIDS and HIV appears to be discounted by these results. Will be interesting to see who might face charges over this. Yes, Prince himself made a bad choice. But doctors are supposed to be dependable and no way should they prescribe in excess to someone who is addicted to a drug. What can we do here?

Regardless, what a terrible loss. He will be missed.
From what I have seen, his cause of death report seems to rule out any other factors.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/prince-not-die-hiv-aids-8106479 Yes it's a tabloid and perhaps not best standard but:
Rumours Prince died from either HIV or AIDS appeared to have been refuted following the official report of his death, which stated that the star was killed by an accidental opioid overdose.
The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office confirmed yesterday that toxicology reports confirmed the Purple Rain singer died of an accidental overdose of Fentanyl - the same drug that caused Michael Jackson's death in 2009.
They also stated that there were no "other significant conditions" that led to his death, which appears to refute the allegations his died after a secret battle with HIV or AIDs.
I was skeptical that he could do a tour of Australia going halfway around the world, if he was seriously ill. Reviews noted that he seemed shaken by the death of his former partner, but nothing else was noted that seemed amiss.
Of course, there ARE other people claiming paternity and will probably have DNA tests. But he had no acknowledged surviving children.
I am wondering if he decided, just before going into rehab, to have one big final dose. When you have been taking a drug long term and have high tolerance, it's very easy to take too much. You think you can handle any amount.
But then if you kick it for awhile and then take it up again, your tolerance is lowered and if you take your former dose, the risks are very high.
I wonder how Stevie is feeling about this. Prince used to frown on her drug use, and now she is the survivor while he has become a casualty. Stevie of course has done her battle with both prescription and illicit drugs. But as she has said, you can talk to them until you are blue in the face and much of the time, they will not listen. You may think you will never let yourself become a victim of addiction, but the tables can turn. It's a very powerful evil that can take some of the best.
r.i.p. Prince and thank you for the musical memories. My father passed away in April and on the day of his funeral, I heard about Prince. I was listening to 'Purple Rain', 'Nothing Compares' etc on that day.
