Hold Me, Gypsy, That's Alright, Only Over You, Eyes of The World, live tracks from the Mirage tour, outtakes, hopefully some rehearsals of songs they cut from the Mirage tour set list. I'm really hoping there's one of That's Alright.

There's so much material that has been floating around. To get some official tracks of all of it would be wonderful. So Excited..

This is the one album from Stevie/Lindsey line up that I think has been most overdue for a remaster. I just hope they include that long version of Gypsy too ;)

Although I prefer Tusk as an album over Mirage, I'm FAR more excited for this release, mainly because there are so many outtakes and rarities from this era that we are unaware of.

That, and I think it was FM's most underrated album, and the last great album from the classic lineup where everyone was contributing proportionately *ahem* ;)

"contributing proportionately"

That hits the nail on the head. It's the release I'm most excited about too.

I think it is the last time the Rumours lineup actually sounded like a band playing together on record. While it doesn't serve up as many classics as the previous albums, it does sound less dated than TITN. I love the warm production even if some of the songs themselves are lacking.

Mirage probably isn't the best Mac album, but there absolutely are days when it's my favorite Mac album. I know every song on it, every moment, like I know the back of my own hand. It's just so *pretty* that I don't care a bit that it doesn't rock out. Can't wait.

And yet the places it does rock a little... it's divine...

The outro of Eyes.. and the outro of Wish You Were Here... there are some jams in Book of Love. Straight Back is like a Nicks/McVie co-write...

Lots of gems in this album..

It's the album that pulled me into Fleetwood Mac. I was six when Rumours was released and remember my older sisters playing it endlessly on the stereo. I remember the premier of the Tusk video on solid gold. Those were fond memories. But it was Hold Me and Gypsy that pulled me in as a die-hard fan. Once I got the album, I was so intrigued. I knew Mirage wasn't as even or as viscerally thrilling as Rumours, which I listened to alongside it, but what it had to offer made me intrigued. I promptly began collecting all of the group's records and had completed the set long before TITN was released. It's been a long time since I first heard Mirage, but many of the songs still take me back to that place. The kids in my junior high classes mocked me for loving a "soft rock" band like Mac. AC/DC was the rage. Def Leopard was everywhere. Journey was permissible. Mac was considered too subtle, too adult. I didn't care. I openly loved them. It was the first of many stands I took in the name of taste and discernment.

My story is VERY similar. I was so young when my older cousin moved in with us, and introduced me to Rumours. I loved it so much,.... but was only starting to grow up when Mirage came along. Hold Me was the one. There hadn't been anything since Tusk, and I'll NEVER forget the first time I heard Hold Me, and that piano riff opening the song. For the next few months, I'd SCREAM at my friends(in the car), "SHUT THE HELL UP, AND CRANK IT!!!!!!!!!!". I can't wait for this reissue! And there had better be a GD Mirage DVD ~FULL F*CKING LENGTH DVD~ to go along with the music.

I agree - while Tusk is my favourite album, in my opinion Stevie was in her vocal prime during the making of Mirage and the subsequent tour. The band was able to work together so cohesively on stage and it shows. Every individual contributed to almost every song in a way that I feel they didn't on the Tusk tour. Maybe its just because they had their performance more "down pat" after so many together.

I love Tango but I think Mirage is a really nice demonstration (a "last hurrah" if you will) of what the Rumours line up could do together as a cohesive band.

I disagree about her being in her vocal prime. I think by the Mirage tour, at least as evidenced by the concert video, her voice was a mess. She definitely sounded better on the Tusk tour and even better on the Rumours tour.

I got mine through Columbia House, one of those 10 for a penny deals. I'm not sure if it was available in brick and mortar stores. I think the vinyl for Timespace was only available through Columbia House too. They seemed to have some exclusive releases.

I thought she sounded great during the Mirage recording sessions and at the start of the tour. "If You Were My Love" is an example of something that could have been recorded during Tusk. I'm sure cocaine and the touring itself took a toll on her voice.

some people just love her raggedy voice during this time-- she'd lost her high end from the Rumours days for sure and couldn't do the quieter stuff nearly as well as even on Tusk but some folks really love that coked-out raspy voice-- I can see it sorta. She could still hit some highs and some lows and she still sounded like her former voice, just more washed out and whispery on the quieter or higher notes but she could still fiercely belt out the rockers-- and coupled with her hair and her behavior during this time it was quite impressive to watch. Nowadays she's so tame and reined in onstage people miss the passion she had then.

I'm very amazed by the number of people that refers to Tusk as one of the better periods for Stevie's voice.
She was over-using her voice and it shows, apart from a few exception. She often sounded strained, uneven and sometimes even off-key, in an fashion that continued from the 1978 tour. She got better but then was a bit flat and guttural in a way that evidently wasn't comfortable to her natural range.

That's funny, because I hadn't thought of that. Because I joined the "other" 10 for a penny place, RCA(later it became BMG?) in 1982, and ordered all cassettes(can't remember now if 8-tracks were even an option). But I NOW remember that that's when I made the jump from 8-track to cassette, was 1982.

Let's say I was 2yo in 1982. Yeah, that's it. I was 2.

Let's hope not!! If I wanted a Lindsey solo album, I'd go buy one!

The highlight of the Tusk boxset was without question Yesterday's Tears... Would love some exciting truly new material like that.

For the most part I could take or leave alternate takes and demos, unless they are radically different from what appeared on the album.

I wonder if the reason for the multiple versions of Lindey's tracks on the deluxe Sets is that maybe Lindsey is more into giving permission to include that stuff than Chrustine or Stevie are? For Stevie, especially, I could see her not wanting to distribute her "practice" versions any more than they already are out there. A part of trying to control her image.

This makes sense, but we did get that totally new take of Angel. You KNOW there is a Sara and Sisters out there other than the ones already released on the first "deluxe" version. That's my biggest pet peeve with the box- along with that KILLER Chain having Stevie's vocals turned down

Agree 100%

Yesterday's Tears was the original working title for Brown Eyes.

The Peter Green guitar on Christine's Brown Eyes was amazing for so many reason.

It was an old chemistry as she was entering the band and he was leaving.
She had grown so much since 1969-1970.
Peter's guitar complimented her arrangement.
It was truly a big moment for me when I listened to it.

I like Lindsey's work on Mirage, but his songs are too light. He needed to put a little more of his Tusk edge into Mirage. Im glad he allowed a little bit of Christine's and Stevie's vocals in his Mirage songs, unlike Tusk where all of his songs are just him. I love Eyes of The Word and Book of Love and Empire State, but Can't Go Back could have been darker and more Lindsey-esque. Oh Diane, I have no idea how that song made it on the album, Lindsey just had to have the most songs I guess. I also would have liked to see another music video from Mirage, one of Lindsey's songs. I always thought Empire State would have been cool with the band wandering around Manhattan and up on roof tops and stuff.

Kubrick2788

Well this is certainly something I would pick up. I think Mirage is too overlooked especially once Tusk became as popular as it is anymore. As someone who isn't a huge Tango fan, this is the last bit of magic for me. Hoping there's a Hold Me demo lurking somewhere. It had more funk before Lindsey got his hands on it. And the less takes of a single Lindsey song from this one the better. While I enjoy most of his songs on here (Even Oh Diane has some charm) I'm almost positive it would be a disc of Empire State takes.

bombaysaffires

I always felt Lindsey was a little put off by Mirage-- there was this band discussion about how Tusk wasn't a big success (gag) and they all wanted to go back to more familiar territory. (There's a great interview I think from Rolling Stone with Lindsey, Chris and MIck and Chris and Mick are talking about making albums that will sell a lot and all that and Lindsey slaps his chest and says "It's also about what's in here!" meaning artistic vision, passion, and all regardless of the sales figures). He got his leashed pulled a bit by the band on Mirage to go back to more mainstream popular stuff. I always wondered if his music on Mirage was a bit of a middle finger to the band like, Oh, you want light pop music? Here you go. (for his songs.) He has said more than once he felt that Mirage, and the direction the band wanted to go with it, was a step backwards creatively.

Lindsey's MIRAGE songs may be lighter, more subdued and less adventurous than either his TUSK or TITN material, but the songs are generally warmer, more tuneful and more band-friendly than his work on the other two albums. In the abstract, I often consider his TITN contributions to be quite strong, but when I pit them against the MIRAGE material, the latter songs seem more convincing and true. To an extent, the TITN songs seem calculated, as if her were consciously striving for a tougher, sexier effect. But no matter how good the tunes assume they are, they don't possess genuine substance. Some of this might be because they sound like carefully-engineered solo performances; but the songs themselves are also lacking an additional spark found in tunes like "Eyes of the World," "Book of Love," and "Can't Go Back." Even "Empire State," which I think is silly, emits a real spark.

The only TITN songs that boast a band identity are "Little Lies," "Everywhere," "Seven Wonders," and "Isn't it Midnight." And regarding TUSK--the band could only do that kind of project once without becoming too splintered. As many have already noted, MIRAGE may be a low-key album, but it's also the last FM record where the ensemble works together to forge a sound.

Lindsey's MIRAGE songs may be lighter, more subdued and less adventurous than either his TUSK or TITN material, but the songs are generally warmer, more tuneful and more band-friendly than his work on the other two albums. I do love the Christine/Lindsey dynamic on the two albums... Their muse with each other seem to grow.

I LOVE to see how much love Mirage is getting on this board lately. When I first joined this board Mirage was the step child that few mentioned. I remember a poll here on Favorite Mac album covers did not even give Mirage as a choice to vote for.

Mirage has some of the best harmonies of ANY Mac album. Many of the songs build and build. Gypsy has one of the best bridges ever. I even love the drumming. Its so classic Mick on every song.

I'm one of the few people that love Lindsey's work on Mirage. Elle will probably banish me for a year for liking it. But, I like what I like dammit.

Book Of Love is amazing.

Love in Store never fails to excite me. It has that buzz, that thrilling hum that comes from new love. The lyric is about the joy of physical attraction and romantic infatuation. The music reflects that joy perfectly. I even love how the song opens, with Mick kicking the song, and the album into gear.

You hit the nail on the head....took the words right out of my mouth  I could not agree more!
The lyrics are simple but so much from the heart. It reminds you of your first Jr. High school crush (maybe because I was in 7th grade when this song came out).
The background vocals are almost sappy but so magical with harmony. Chris has always written love songs but this one seems to be an attempt at a pop song and it works like magic. The beat kicks in and is steady and has a very poppy, catchy vibe that is easy to sing along with. The song translates live perfectly. One of my favorite images of the commercial Mirage tour release is when Stevie is turned to Chris singing "you're the only I ever felt... could be special to me" Stevie is having so much fun singing back up it makes you fall in love with the song all over again. Some amazing guitar work live on the song too.
I hope so much for this gem to be added to the setlist next tour. If we cant get Hold Me then please Chris must pick this song from Mirage.

I remember listening to side one when it came out and was totally overwhelmed by the hopeful yet melancholic feel of the songs. It still is only really enjoyable on vinyl. The shytty digital mix is aweful. Especially the simple deep pumping bassparts are killed on the CD version. And on the spotifytracks too.

Looking at this story about Mirage I cannot help but feel a rising sense of despair. This band has produced nothing new in 16 full years and we are clutching at a reissue of something from 34 years ago. I guess I really do not give a damn. Anymore.

In Your Dreams 2011 (Nicks solo)

I may have left something out. If you add in the long tours, this band has been quite busy producing new material despite being a classic rock band who lost a pivotal member for 16 years. It was daring to do albums without Lindsey and then Christine. But they pulled through with new material
I value quality over quantity. I hope the Mac takes their time recording the new album.
I LOVE Mirage and most very early 80s music. To have out takes, demos, unleashed tracks, or re-mastered tracks is just as exciting as new material. The short Mirage era is probably my favorite era in Mac history. That is when I became a fan.

Solo albums actually are the band NOT producing. I don't consider Stevie, Lindsey or Christine albums to be Fleetwood Mac albums and I wouldn't be clamoring so hard for something from this band if they had actually been producing new music over those years. They can go on doing solo stuff for the rest of their lives if they wish, that doesn't mean anything for the band.

Also long tours is them also not producing new music. It's them wanting to do something (and make the monies) but not actually have to be creative together. I saw them in 2004 on the SYW tour and skipped the subsequent tours in 2009 and 2013 because, unless the tickets were cheap and they weren't, I didn't need to see them again playing mostly the same show with no new music. I skipped the OWTS tour (they came here twice) because, one, the tickets were way too high, two, I assume they would be touring again except promoting a new album. OWTS was basically The Dance part 2 except nearly 20 years older and no new songs. I don't need the nostalgia/greatest hits tours unless the tickets are cheap and they never are. I'll support them if they're giving me something new.

yup. since Stevie is stifling the band.

she's also indirectly stifling solo work of other songwriters in the band. Lindsey has given us 3 great full length solo albums and 2 live albums in the last 10 years, but he put solo albums on back burner after 2012, when it started to look like FM album actually had some chance of going forward creatively. putting the band first (while not every songwriter in the band did!) is stifling Lindsey's solo productivity. :distress:

You are missing my point.
Classic rock bands from the same era that have toured over the past 20 years have put out much less new material than Fleetwood Mac. The Eagles, Journey, Rolling Stones, etc. I could go on forever. Records do not sell anymore and the Mac lost key members but they have still done recordings. I included some of the solo work because it is icing on the cake. During half a decade in the mid 80s all we were able to get was solo work. I love the solo projects in the early/mid 80s. They kept the band together allowing the members to explore musically away from the band. I LOVE Say You Will. Its one of the band's best albums. But I equally love In the Meantime. Christine has the knack of creating perfect songs and I will take them however I can get them..... solo or with the Mac. In a nutshell....the Mac and its members are not a typical classic rock touring band. They still create songs. That is not the typical super group of the 70's for sure.

Thing about "That's Alright" is that I think it needed some pizzazz production wise. There is a nice counterpoint woodblock percussion in the song but its mixed so far down that you barely hear it. Had that been more prominent, I think it would have given the song more of a hook than it has.

While Mirage is topical...
...I wonder whether anyone can offer me a theory as to why Gypsy wasn't a smash hit single. Don't get me wrong- it did okay to claw its way to US #12 but it wasn't the big hit it should have been.

Stevie was a big star on the back of Bella Donna and they made one of the all-time great videos to accompany the song. The video had heavy play on MTV. The previous single Hold Me had just been a big hit spending about two months in the top 10 so they were in the public eye/consciousness at the time of it's release.

And yet it debuted at US #69 on 4th Sept and then went #57, #46, #35, #27, #21, #15, #12, #12, #12. Clearly a slow burner.
Gypsy only reached #46 in the UK (admittedly only Oh Diane did well in the UK) and didn't break the top 10 in any major music buying country.

It's a shame and a bit odd it's chart placings didn't reflect it's true glory.

I've never understood why Gypsy only ever reached #12 but I can understand why it didn't in other places, especially here in the UK, because the Mac had decreased in popularity and Stevie was not huge as a solo artist.

The only comparison I can make is to Edge of Seventeen. That song is Stevie's most popular, most iconic and famous and yet it wasn't her most successful in terms of chart positions or sales. If you told people that Edge of Seventeen reached #1 they probably wouldn't bat an eyelid but it only reached #11. So did Rhiannon! It's all very weird...

Each to their own...
...but noooooooooooo waaaaaayyyyyyyy.

I don't think it needed any pizzazz- its just great as it is. In fact I love the demo that's even more basic.
I can hear the wood block very clearly- its a nice little touch and adds something a bit different but I don't see any advantage in it being any more prominent than it is.

I like the line '...I must have been crazy, crazy to wait on you baby'. I wonder if that's a link to her waitressing job and doing everything for Lindsey in the BN days (at which time this was written)?

Yes, I can understand it in the UK- Mirage is by far the least lauded album by the 'classic' band in the UK, perhaps because they didn't tour here. Mirage was quite a US-centric period of time. Mainly surprised by its performance in the US and Canada.
I'm actually surprised Hold Me didnt chart at all in the UK though. I would have thought that would have had much more of an appeal to the UK audience at that time.

Having chart hits at #11 and #12 are HUGE HITS
If a rock band charts at #12 on the pop charts, it probably is top 5 on rock stations. In addition during the 80s most of us heard most of the songs watching MTV over the radio. Gypsy was a huge MTV staple.
Hold Me is an instant hit from the first time you hear it. It got locked at #4 for weeks because I think there was some huge pop song locked at #1 for weeks.
I wish Love In Store was the first single WITH a video. I think that song would have made top 10 instead of 22.

Trivia question about charts. What is the biggest #2 single of all time?

How it was I'll never know. What I do know is that Stevie's Bella Donna outsold her album and she thus became the best selling female album artist in the US in both 1981 and 1982. And she had a #1 album with Mirage in 1982!

My god. From 1981-1983, Stevie really was extremely popular. An extremely popular solo artist that was just as popular in a legendary band. Wow. She must have earned a lot of money in those three years. 3 extremely successful albums and tours.

Gosh, I think besides the bad cd transfer, I think it's amazing the way it is. Fleetwood Mac at it's best.

Trivia question about charts. What is the biggest #2 single of all time?
Foreigner..waiting for a girl like you spent 10 weeks at #2. Olivia Newton John's Physical was at #1 for 9 weeks

Actually "Physical" was #1 for a total of 10 weeks.

You are right about Foreigner and the most weeks at #2. Do you know which song spent the most weeks at #3? SDMHA.

Given how much I heard it on the radio and how often I saw the video on MTV, I was as shocked as anyone that it didn't make the Top 10. I seem to remember Casey Kasem commenting on this, either expecting it to be huge when it was released or expressing surprise after the fact that it didn't get higher. I can't quite remember the details.

But it doesn't really matter. The charts measure the song's popularity at the time, but they can't tell you what the lasting legacy will be. Between classic rock, adult contemporary, and pop hits stations, I still hear "Gypsy" on the radio at least once a week. In contrast, I haven't heard "Big Love" since the year it was released.

Someone else already made the point about EO17 being Stevie's most iconic song, and there are lots of other examples with other bands too. Heart's classic "Crazy on You" only made it to #35, and that's still played all the time. Some of their Top 10 hits like "Nothin' At All" and "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" seem like distant memories.

These are great examples, but even pertaining to Fleetwood Mac, Landslide wasn't ever released as a single, yet is probably their "biggest hit". Go Your Own Way only got to #10 US and #38 UK, but is probably close with Landslide, in terms of popularity.. Really there is no rhyme or reason as to what is successful as far as singles are concerned with this band... I think Gypsy could have been a bigger hit had it been released as the first single off the album. I also think Straight Back should have been the third single, instead of Love in Store... It's nice, but I just think they needed something more "punchy". Personally, I think it would have been advantageous.

I found this, the Billboard US charts the week Gypsy peaked, and I think it's rather interesting:

1 1 JACK AND DIANE –•– John Cougar (Riva)-14 (4 weeks at #1) (1)
2 2 WHO CAN IT BE NOW –•– Men At Work (Columbia)-16 (2)
3 3 EYE IN THE SKY –•– The Alan Parsons Project (Arista)-17 (3)
4 6 I KEEP FORGETTIN’ (Every Time You’re Near) –•– Michael McDonald (Warner Brothers)-12 (4)

It was a good time for music. I didn't think I knew Jack and Diane but a quick search on Youtube reminds me of the tune- brings back memories I didn't know I had. Abracadabra was one of the big songs that was number one at that time- I think that was at #1 when Hold Me was in the charts. Up Where We Belong- another big hitter.

At the same time though, some of the songs on this list can only be described as rather forgettable.

Hold Me was huge. It was so nice to see a duet by Christine and Lindsey do so well. Don't Stop was huge ( I think #3) Think About Me wasn't as big (#20), but Hold Me (#4) was all over MTV and the radio. It was so different than what was on the charts at the time. I remember seeing Christine McVie's name everywhere, around that time. I love the duets they do, and Tango had even more from Christine and Lindsey. They are a wonderful writing duo feeding each other's muse.

thanks for digging out and sharing this list - very cool to see. some of the songs that are staples on classic rock radio and seemingly still unavoidable everywhere else on this list!

i'd add the Chain to the list of biggest most well known FM songs that were never singles. at least Landslide was a highly successful single when covered by another band, which brought it back and into focus. it's definitely interesting to see which songs are the most enduring vs which were the biggest charting hits when they first came out.

If we are in fact getting a deluxe and - most importantly - remastered edition of Mirage, I will be very excited.

As those have previously mentioned, Mirage is certainly not FM's best release. I'm afraid that the band never was able to recapture the glory that was the 1970s trilogy. However, Mirage does have stand out songs and a beautiful production.

I will admit that I rarely listen to Mirage. This has always been due to the dire mastering of the CD version. I do not own the original vinyl version, so I cannot say if it sounds good or not (I assume that the original vinyl is superior to the CD/digital version). I'm someone who cannot stand the poor quality of 80s/early 90s CDs and, therefore, Mirage and Tango are rarely ever heard through my speakers. In fact, the only Mirage/Tango tracks I regularly listen to are the remastered versions on the Very Best Of 2-CD compilation. So, to have a remastered version of Mirage (and hopefully Tango) will be an excellent edition to my collection. I feel that if there is a quality sounding copy of the album that I will gain more of an appreciation for the work during the Fleetwood Mac 80s era.

If the band's management really wants to make fans happy (and make some money), they might be best to release a Mirage/Tango combo with both albums remastered (and all the extra stuff like B-sides, demons, live tracks). A complete 80s release from the band would be beyond awesome.

This would leave room for a super deluxe release of the white album, which would be a fitting release for the band's final tour.

Of course, an actual new album would be the best surprise of all.

I'm afraid that's been simply skipped. I would like more than anything to have a super deluxe release for the White Album but even the 2004 reissue didn't bring anything new but the single mixes of a few songs, only two unreleased. ω
I'm afraid that being the band's first experiment it hasn't been documented very well.

Even though I always liked (though not loved) Lindsey's Mirage songs and I have come around a long way to "Hold Me", for me this period is absolutely made by Stevie. Which is funny considering how fast that changed into the exact opposite by the next album. But "Gypsy", "That's Alright", "Smile At You", "If You Were My Love" ... goodness, and her voice! I'm super excited for this release and all the goodies that I desperately hope will come of it.

I remember that too, but I think it turned out to be just a rumour.
I know it circulates a live version of Warm Ways from the white album rehearsals so maybe there is somewhere a soundboard with a few songs from those.
There may be some unreleased soundboard from the tour.
They could find the material of the Santa Barbara show from which they made the Rosebud documentary and the clip from Fleewtood Mac at 21 (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=1157923&postcount=26).
They could finally give us the HD performances from the Midnight Special in DVD.
They could at least try to scrap something.

Agreed. Whilst it's nice to have an official live version on the Tusk re-release, this era's version - the LA Forum one - would be spectacular. That said, I'm not hopeful...

I'm really hoping for a 1982 live Sara. The Oakland California October 10, 1982 Sara is awesome.

I love the versions of "Not That Funny" from this era. Upright piano and great guitar work.

Wonder if this edition will include as a bonus track the cassette mix of "Straight Back"?

I would KILL for that to be included!

Very excited about this release, but going on the experience of White Album/Rumours/Tusk remasters and remixes, I doubt that we will get dvd of the concert. In fact, the band or Warners or whoever seem less than anxious to release live concerts of Fleetwood Mac - makes me really appreciate that we have Live in Boston and The Dance.

Ken says June, Australia says June but Amazon UK and US bear no tidings and nor does iTunes.

There is some great live-footage on both the recent Rumors and Tusk box-sets to my opinion ...

I really don't get it, so many other bands have released tons of old footage, and you know it's just sitting there- Tusk Doc/Concert, Mirage concert, US fest...Why on earth wouldn't the Tusk Doc be included on the massive Tusk set???

Yes!
And the Santa Barbara show, the Midnight Special, the Sydney concert, the Tokyo show, the Largo concerts, this band has a lot of unreleased pro-shots!
