I'm shocked too. I had no idea he was sick.

I have a few of his albums and have just ordered
Blackstar (vinyl).

He starred in one of my favorite movies The Prestige.

Because of the time difference, many Americans won't have received the news yet. What a horrible way to start the day. I find it scary when we lose people as influential as him. :(

I woke up in shock. It still hasn't hit me that he's gone. Many people noticed how Blackstar told of an end, could he have been warning us through the album? Who knows. Cancer is an awful, painful disease and at least he's in peace now.

I'm really amazed that he worked to leave us a last testament of his artistry while being sick. There will never be another like him.

David Bowie Was Reportedly Diagnosed With Liver Cancer, Rumored to Suffer Multiple Heart Attacks
By Jeff Giles January 12, 2016 8:18 AM

David Bowie fans searching for answers in the days after his death might have their first clues regarding the battle with cancer that shadowed his final 18 months.

Coming mere days after his 69th birthday and the release of his new Blackstar album, the announcement of his passing on Jan. 10 caught the world by surprise, but to those in Bowie’s inner circle, news of his condition was nothing new. The Independent quotes stage director Ivo van Hove, who’d been working with him on his new Lazarus musical, as saying he’d known of Bowie’s illness for “about a year.”

“We began collaborating on our show Lazarus, and at some point he took me to one side to say that he wouldn’t always be able to be there due to his illness. He told me he had cancer, liver cancer,” said Hove. “The cast didn’t know all that time, and I suspect that the musicians with whom he recorded Blackstar didn’t know either. He made every effort to complete those two projects on time, not to let his illness win. Bowie was still writing on his deathbed, you could say. He fought like a lion and kept working like a lion through it all. I had incredible respect for that.”

The NME, meanwhile, quotes Bowie biographer Wendy Leigh’s interview with the BBC, in which Leigh asserts that cancer was only one of multiple health woes that dogged him in recent years. “He didn’t just battle cancer,” said Leigh. “He had six heart attacks in recent years. I got this from somebody very close to him.”

That sounds terrible, and yet he pulled off an amazing farewell album and even played guitar on it too. Cancer is so terrible. But hey, the starman has returned home and the stars look very different today. Bowie was a hero, for more than one day. Turn and face the strange forever...

He kept it very secret. I saw another report that he had liver cancer that had spread from pancreas, and he'd tried some experimental treatments. He had a 15 year old daughter from his very happy marriage to Iman and he tried to fight hard. I know he used to smoke a lot but I thought he had quit some time ago.

Fleetwood Mac and Bowie are I think my favorite acts from the 70s. He was a very clever, creative man always ahead of the game.

Apart from illness, I'm glad he spent the last 20 years of his life probably happier than he'd ever been, and he spent time with family.

There are many stories about how generous and humble he was in person. He was there for Sean Lennon and Rolan Bolan after they lost their own fathers. When a friend lost his home in a fire he opened his own home to him during the rebuilding process. He did things like that without looking for attention or fanfare. In his last appearances, he was obviously frail but still smiling and making all effort he could.

Many artists from yesteryear and today are paying tribute to him. But I don't think Fleetwood Mac has as yet? I know Stevie was a fan but not sure if there was any back story or their paths crossed.

I don't think Coldplay have said anything yet but I expect they will pay a worthy tribute. Bowie was obviously a major influence on them. It's just a shock to so many.

I lived through Michael Jackson and Kurt Cobain's biggest fame. But I actually think that this is a bigger loss to me.

I know Stevie was a fan but not sure if there was any back story or their paths crossed.

Their paths sort of crossed during the 1983 US Festival and in an interview Stevie said that she tried to get to David but couldn't because he was too busy preparing to perform right after her and probably he was very nervous like her.

(There have been several sad losses in music lately. Scott Weiland, Natalie Cole, Lemmy. When I heard about Bowie, I was still reeling from the loss of Stevie Wright after Christmas. Stevie perhaps could have been the original lead singer of AC/DC, but he had serious drug and alcohol addictions. He tried a rehab that gave patients powerful sedatives and shock treatments, and left him with cognitive deficits. A bit like our version of Peter Green or Syd Barrett. In the 70s Bowie covered a song that Stevie Wright had done with the Easybeats. So something of a connection there. Wright was only 68 and a broken man... After all they have been through it's a small miracle that Fleetwood Mac are here and still performing. I think they have a consciousness of that on stage.)

Thank you for that. Sonetimes it is difficult when they have an 'entourage' around them. But I think they would have connected. Joe Walsh has paid tribute.

If there's any Bowie link to Fleetwood Mac it would most likely be through Mick or possibly John.
Mike Vernon produced David Bowie's debut album in 1967, just before FM joined his Blue Horizon label for their first couple of albums.

Oh dear. I do see similarities between them though and in a more recent interview she was reported as saying 'I'm a big fan of David Bowie.' They were both quite ethereal and I think Stevie may have a few personas. Perhaps artistic representations of different sides of herself.

They would have all had mutual friends. FM and Bowie both recorded albums at the Honky Chateau. Both started in England in the 1960s. But they may have been into different scenes at that time.

Bowie's long time producer Tony Visconti has said that he was actually planning a new album and even though he knew he was terminal, he thought he had more time. There are some stories that he has already been cremated - the family won't confirm or deny. They're giving away very little to the media, but have announced there will be a private service.

From his official FB page:

THANK YOU

The family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend.

They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times.

We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world.

However, it is important to note that while the concerts and tributes planned for the coming weeks are all welcome, none are official memorials organized or endorsed by the family.

Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David's music, we welcome everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit.

It is nice to see him being recognized. Always thought it was a shame he went a bit off the radar when so many present acts seem heavily inspired by him.

yes, exactly.

he was a true artist, innovator and trend-starter. always really going his own way. not playing practically any hits at shows if his vision for the tour was different. always changing, he was never going to be painted into a corner. following his artistic vision. not being afraid to continuously try new and different things. creating new music as well as other forms of expression till the end.

i really hope Blackstar becomes his first #1 album here, it would so fitting.

He was so damn clever. I didn't realize how much so until later. Each time you thought you had him pegged, he would have something else up his sleeve. He really was several decades ahead of his time.

Other people who try to do what he did usually end up becoming cliched and like a caricature. I think that happened to Lady Gaga, though she seems to be finding her way back and I hope her next album shows some real evolution.

There is footage of Bowie on youtube doing a moonwalk about ten years before Michael Jackson. Many of the predictions he made about future society and the effect technology would have proved to be extremely accurate. The isolating effect of modern society. The breaking down of long held standards, doctrines and statutes. He reflected the confusion of the 70s decade while at the same time bridging some of the gaps.

'Life On Mars' is one of my favorites and was composed as an updated version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' or 'My Way'. But it wasn't a lazy rehash. It's a work of brilliance in its own right. Equal to the originals if not superseding them in some terms.

In my mind David Bowie deserves to be up there with the classic artists of all time and I hope new generations continue to discover him.

Well, I'm a big fan of David Bowie. Especially his movie The Hunger, with Susan Sarandon and Catherine Denueve. Just creepy and strange and amazingly beautiful. I'm always surprised Bowie didn't make more vampire movies.

P.S. I found the interview I was talking about; this excerpt in particular came after that Bozzio said that while he could watch Stevie (of whom he was a fan of) perform from the side of the stage, they didn't let him and the others stand on the same stage to watch David Bowie.

NICKS “I was incredibly excited to meet Bowie, but he didn’t offer a welcoming hand to the person playing before him. I was dissapointed, but I know he was nervous. It doesn’t matter how big a star you are - there’s no way you can look out at all those people and not be nerved out.”

Hunger is one bad movie, whether or not it has some pockets of cult following and regardless of how interesting of a director Tony Scott was. i would venture to speculate neither of the 3 main stars would really want to unearth it unnecessarily.

it's funny that of all Bowie's musical achievements and some interesting movies, a fellow performer would single out not his music or his performance art but a bad movie when she talks about him. maybe it was a dig at him since she felt snubbed.

If it weren't Stevie making the comment I would have suspected sarcasm. But she's kooky. I love her for it though.

I have sometimes wondered if she got some of her style from the British glam artists of the early 70s. Especially Marc Bolan who was a close friend of Bowie. But he died in 1977 and never really made it in America. Bowie understood that market better.

Bolan was a little person - almost elf like - so he often wore top hats, boas, heels, big hair. He was known to wave a tambourine around and sang in a strange vibrato lyrics that were captivating but made no sense about mythical creatures.

Slash of GnR I think definitely would have known him but can't say the same of Stevie. So it might have been a coincidence.

I had an obsession with Marc in my younger years especially his early work. Unfortunately after learning more about him he came off as something of a poser. The work he did after his initial success fell right off especially after he got rid of Visconti, and hasn't stood the test of time as well as Bowie's. So my interest ended up switching to the red haired alien.

I feel so bad for Tony Visconti. I imagine he is devastated. He knew Bowie for decades and they were still working together up to the end.

My 15 year old is listening to him non stop. I hope he becomes remembered as one of the most significant artists of his day. His music is still very apt for this era. Not a fan of everything he did but some of it was quite extraordinary. There are so many tributes it's impossible to cover them all.

Bowie had a son born 'Zowie Bowie' who is now in his 40s, goes by the ordinary name Duncan Jones and has become a successful film director. He directed the World of Warcraft movie that will be released this year. The trailer impressed many and was released in November. His wife actually battled breast cancer but is said to have beaten it.

His young daughter who I think is only 15 is perhaps being shielded from the media which is totally understandable. She is said to also be musical.

He was very competitive with some of his peers, but many have said he was also genuinely interested in and caring towards other people. Not the typical self obsessed rock star you might expect.

Sorry if this is going off the beaten track (this will be my final comment but he had such an impact on my life). I have read that he was also looked out for Marc Bolan's son Rolan. Yes Marc totally copied David by naming his son Rolan Bolan, like Zowie Bowie. Rolan later said that he was very indebted to David Bowie after he and his mother fell on hard times. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2025138/How-David-Bowie-saved-Marc-Bolans-son.html

In the last decade or so Bowie quietened down his life a lot and was keeping to himself. But he stayed in contact with friends by email. The young singer Lorde has written about meeting him a few years ago. "I've never met a hero of mine and liked it. It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can't enjoy it. David was different." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/read-lordes-moving-tribute-to-david-bowie-20160111

Glenn A Baker has said that David would come into his music store, and once saw a kid buying his record, so he crept up behind him, leaned over his shoulder, and autographed it. When the kid realized who it was, that must have been a moment!

no reason to apologize or stop commenting!

talking about Bolan, wasn't Lady Stardust originally supposed to be about Marc Bolan and the original demo version titled He Was Alright (A Song for Marc)?

also, throughout his career he kept bringing out their music and helping bands or artists who were interesting but not recognized enough. and relatively recently he apparently played a part in the success of Arcade Fire.

and 10 albums in top 40 - so 1/4, plus of course studio album released just this week sitting at #1 (where it was apparently headed in the UK even before his death).

for some perspective how huge that is, our dearest rumours-era Mac released barely more than 10 albums all together, and that's including live and compilations. and Bowie has 19 in top 100 this week.

To answer, yes I think several songs may have been in reference to Marc Bolan. This is quite a good article about their personal and working relationship. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2223980/Marc-Bolan-David-Who-The-extraordinary-story-closest-friendships--bitter-rivalries--pop.html Once the glam rock craze faded, Marc seemed to struggle to redefine himself. Elton, Bowie, Rod Stewart all managed to transfer their success to America. But it didn't really happen for Marc even though he became romantically involved with a black soul singer from the US.

Poor Stevie she is cute but looks so sad in that video. I guess because of Robin.

Stevie surprised many by saying she liked the Twilight movies and books. She's even admitted she watches daytime soaps. But so do I so I can't knock her for it :S I have some corny tastes.

I've read books about these artists but often have bad memory. Another indirect connection - Stevie's work with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. Dave and Annie Lennox have both posted online tributes to Bowie, even though Annie has had her own share of personal tragedy lately. Annie was very Bowie at times with the whole androgynous look and bright red hair she sometimes had.

I'm still sad and shocked at the loss of a huge cultural icon. He could take a conventional seeming pop format, and move it far beyond that. Themes of 'displacement' are so relevant these days and he was covering that 40 years ago.

Keith Richards has made me do a double take. In 2008 he was quoted as saying something quite mean about Bowie and his work. Now he has a big tribute on Twitter.

"I’m deeply saddened by such a sudden shock. David was a true original in everything he did and, along with many others... I’m going to miss him. Another goodbye to another good friend." - Keith Richards

Goes for full hour but one of his great final performances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY54qW7SK8Y

Annie Lennox was at least an acquaintance of Bowie since they permormed together "Under Pressure" at the Freddy Mercury tribute concert.

Yes, the song before was Edge Of 17 and she was already visibly moved; she said that it was dedicated to her friend Robin "who is now a white winged dove".

His long time piano player has said that in the 1970s a 'psychic' told Bowie he would not live past 69 or 70. That is quite eerie. I think he sensed a long time ago he would not get to a great age or be around in his seventies.

For the past ten years I was thinking where is he when everyone else seems to now be copying him? I wanted a revival for him so he could get his true place. This is not the way I wanted it :( so it's bittersweet.

I like artists who seem to have a bit of ambiguity or enigma about them. I don't get why we want to define people by certain factors and rely on stereotypes. Some people seem terribly threatened and intolerant of anything that is not cut and dry and I still notice that. It's too bad I think they miss out on a lot that is interesting.

I was an 80s kid and at that time, did not think Bowie was cool at all. It took me awhile to discover his formative work and to understand what it was about. That a lot of it was parody but it ended up eclipsing parody.

Gaga struck me as much the same when she started. I could recognize the parody element but began to worry when she appeared to be taking it seriously after awhile. Because that's when you can get bogged down.

I am wondering about the overall effect on the generation he was a cultural leader for. Because that's the generation i.e. 'baby boomers' who have tried so hard to defy ageing and keep celebrating a teen like culture. Bowie wasn't really that old but I suppose he had done a life cycle and in his final work, even though he was putting on a brave face in public, didn't hide the effects of his age and illness at all. The only thing I can compare it to really is Johnny Cash's final work including 'Hurt'. If an artist dies young, we never see that. They remain youthful forever in our minds. Age never catches up.

I know some older people whom I really admire because of their attitude and they're still very active and lively. I'm all for it, but fate eventually comes to all. This month has been a sobering reminder.

His son briefly returned to Twitter to post a letter sent to him by a doctor and of course they deal every day with these issues. http://blogs.bmj.com/spcare/2016/01/15/a-thank-you-letter-to-david-bowie-from-a-palliative-care-doctor/

in this interview Bowie mentions both Stevie Nicks (when talking about Peter Frampton - was he playing guitar for SN at some point in the 90s?) and talks about Tony Scott and his own role in Hunger -

Frampton was Stevie's opening act on the RAL tour or at least on the shows that I went to. At one Stevie concert ..not even sure which tour or even decade I do recall her saying and this is an exact quote "I met David Bowie once and he had nothing to say to me".I can assume that this was the US festival in '83.

He was so intelligent, perceptive and articulate in those interviews. He could also do uncanny impersonations of other well known people. Obviously, he was an astute observer who soaked up influences around him like a sponge and was amazingly fluid.

Found this brief clip on youtube, not the full performance but may be part of Bowie's 1983 US Festival appearance?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdk1Tpgh-Hg

Fleetwood Mac had apparently played there as a group the year before and were the closing act? And then Stevie performed by herself in 83.

Set list for Monday May 30 1983 (rock day)

Los Lobos (on a side stage only)
Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul
Berlin
Quarterflash
Missing Persons
U2
The Pretenders
Joe Walsh
Stevie Nicks
David Bowie

The Joe Walsh performance is on youtube. What a line up eh? Bowie was apparently a late addition but the organizer really wanted him on the bill despite little room left, and he was paid handsomely.

From the biography 'Starman' by Paul Trynka:

'After accompanying David for a fortnight, [Geeling Ng] caught a plane back to New Zealand and a normal life, just as David and band flew over to San Bernardino to play a one-off show at the US festival for the widely publicised fee of $1 million.

'Headlining on an evening that included U2, The Pretenders and Stevie Nicks to a 300,000-strong crowd, they walked out onto a stage that had been completely cleared, at eleven o'clock to a stunned, rapturous reception: 'like Jesus walking on water', says Simms. The festival was a disaster for its sponsor, Apple's Steve Wozniak: losing over $7 million according to the New York Times, with one audience member murdered in a drug deal, another dead of an overdose. But for David it was a triumph; the date hugely raised his commercial profile, and helped bring more US promoters on board. But with stories of the $1 million price tag came reports that David considered the tour his 'pension plan' - a sentiment guaranteed to inflame his detractors, who started to speculate that the tour was more about money than music.'

By the time Peter Frampton joined him for the 'Glass Spider' tour, the critics really had the knives out. That show was so panned. I do think he may have become more conscious about money. He was heading to middle age, had a son to support, and had nearly gone bankrupt in the 1970s due to poor management of finances. Many people thought he had lost his creative direction and stopped taking risks. I can't say I took much notice of him in the 80s.

Also around the time of the 'Glass Spider' tour a woman accused him of assaulting her and exposing her to AIDS. The whole story seemed so ridiculous but it's been rehashed again in recent weeks. The case was dismissed, and from what I gather, they did have an encounter but the rest was made up. She tried to cash in her cheque with the tabloids but it was so long ago I don't remember much.

Details of his will have been revealed. He left approximately half his fortune to Iman, the rest to be divided equally among his two children. Smaller sums were also included for Corinne 'Coco' Schwab and the former nanny of his older child.

He requested that his ashes be scattered in Bali in a Buddhist ceremony. http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/david-bowie-leaves-millions-to-wife-iman-kids-nanny-and-assistant-in-will-w162943

So much of his life was private in the past decade, but the very in depth Rolling Stone feature gave a more detailed description of his life during this time and the way he fought his illness. A few excerpts mainly from Tony Visconti who had known and worked with Bowie from the 1960s to his final days. He was reportedly going through an intense creative period despite being so ill and put up a huge battle.

By the time he made his surprise re-emergence in 2013 with his first album in a decade, The Next Day, he had pulled off a feat that no other rock star has quite managed, regaining all of the heady mystique of his breakthrough years, and then some.

In final three years, though, were an extraordinary fertile period of creativity. In 2014, he began work on another, even better, album, Blackstar, while also helping bring to life an ambitious off-Broadway show, Lazarus, based around his old and new songs. But he had kept one more secret: Bowie maintained focus on these last creations while battling cancer.

Visconti, who knew of Bowie's illness, noticed the tone of some of the Blackstar lyrics early on. "You canny bastard," Visconti told him. "You're writing a farewell album." Bowie simply laughed. "It's so inspirational how he lived his last year," says Visconti, pointing out that Bowie wrote some of his most amusing lyrics while terribly ill. "He kept his sense of humor."

In the worst moments, Visconti would try to reassure him. "Sometimes he would phone me when he just finished treatment," he recalls. "He couldn't talk very loud. He was really pretty messed up, and I would say, 'Don't worry about it. You're going to live.'"

"One hopes," Bowie would shoot back. "Don't get too excited about that."

[Cut back to his last tour.]

"Three-quarters through the Reality tour," recalls Garson, "he said, 'You know, Mike, after this tour, I'm just going to be a father and live a normal life. And I'm going to be there for Lexi while she grows up. I missed it the first time.'"

In 2007, Bowie helped curate New York's Highline Music Festival, which announced that he would play a "large outdoor concert" as part of the event. When he quietly pulled out, rumors swirled that he was experiencing renewed health problems. But Visconti, for one, says he saw no evidence of that.

"When I met up with David in 2008 or 2009," he says, "he actually had some weight on him. He was robust. His cheeks were rosy red. He wasn't sick. He was on medicine for his heart. But it was normal, like a lot of people in their fifties or sixties are on heart medication, and live very long lives. So he was coping with it very, very well."

.........

When Bowie showed up for Blackstar recording sessions in New York last January, he had no eyebrows, and no hair on his head. He had begun to tell a handful of friends and collaborators that he had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy.

[Further on] all the while, Bowie was undergoing chemo, and at one time, his prognosis seemed bright. "He was optimistic because he was doing the chemo and it was working," says Visconti, "and at one point in the middle of last year, he was in remission. I was thrilled. And he was a bit apprehensive. He said, "Well, don't celebrate too quickly. For now, I'm in remission, and we'll see how it goes.' And he continued the chemotherapy. So I thought he was going to make it."

But Bowie still embedded enough intimations of mortality into his lyrics - and majesty in the music - that Blackstar seemed very much like a fitting goodbye. "I think he thought if he was going to die, this would be a great way to go," says Visconti. "This would be a great statement to make."

Bowie was well aware that Lazarus, too, served that purpose... But even as he engineered twin artistic departures for David Bowie, he was doing everything he could to stick around as David Jones. "I deeply felt that he really didn't wan to die," says van Hove. "It was a fight not against death but a fight to live. And living, for him, was being a real family man. He loved to go home, to be at home with his daughter, with his wife, his family."

In November... Bowie's cancer came back, according to Visconti. This time, doctors told him it was terminal. "It had spread all over his body," says Visconti, "so there's no recovering from that."

In those final weeks, he still somehow found time and energy to record demos for five entirely new songs. A week before his death, just before Blackstar's release, he FaceTimed Visconti and told him he wanted to make one more album, a follow up to Blackstar.

"I was thrilled," Visconti says, "and I thought, and he must have thought, that he'd have a few months, at least. So the end must've been very rapid. I'm not privy to it. I don't know exactly, but he must've taken ill very quickly after that phone call." The news of his death surprised even the collaborators who knew of his illness. Others, like the actors in Lazarus, had no idea he was sick.

So that leaves a lot of questions as to what he may have been able to do if he had not had these health issues. Once his daughter reached adulthood, perhaps he would've attempted a full public comeback. I personally think that conditions were right for it in this era.

David Bowie's son Duncan Jones has revealed that his wife is expecting a baby in June. This would have been the first grandchild for Bowie and no doubt he knew about the pregnancy. He would've desperately wanted to be around for it.

Duncan's wife Rodene went through her own battle with breast cancer a few years ago but has been in the clear since 2013. She had a double mastectomy and sometimes those treatments can affect fertility but it would seem everything is okay.

yeah, most of Bowie fan groups had similar reaction. she butchered the songs, imo, her voice was all wrong for every single one of the 9 songs she had in the medley, as well as her dancing. i thought the changes / looks were interesting. someone commented on twitter that it was like a vegas version of Bowie's songs.

in general, i have a lot of respect for Gaga, and almost felt bad for her considering she's a huge fan and cites him as enormous influence. she did try. there were a lot of comments in anticipation of the performance that it's too bad she/they didn't bring in some of the people Bowie was a fan of or worked with or someone who has more appropriate vocals for his songs. Nile Rodgers being there was definitely nice. of course, somehow i don't see Reznor or Jagger being interested in grammy participation anymore so. ;)

I like Lady Gaga. But when I heard she was doing this tribute I thought to myself it could be really good, or it could be just like bad cabaret which is what it teetered to. I liked the start of it but after that it started feeling more like an Elvis impersonation.

I liked Lorde's heartfelt tribute and the speeches at the BRIT Awards. She was nervous (understandably) but ultimately handled it very well. Bowie was a fan of her music and she had been able to meet him. They had Bowie's actual musicians there too. Duncan Jones seemed to like it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7l3y7LOzLc

Lorde reminds me a bit of a young Kate Bush. Somehow I had missed Kate's written tribute to Bowie. There's quite a good collection here of celebrity tributes to Bowie.

Kind of makes up for Lady Gaga's messy presentation. I noticed on Twitter that Boy George said Gaga's performance was more like a tribute to his ex wife Angie than to David! Angie appeared to take that as a high compliment and retweeted it. She actually did look quite a bit like Angie. Trust George to stir it!

Everyone in Bowie's camp dislikes Angie and that includes Duncan. He still does not have anything to do with her. So I don't think that won Gaga many points in her favor.
