Is anyone going to buy this? I know Stevie is mentioned in it. I just want to buy it because I read the other day, from some site, that Tom had a terrible time when his first wife Jane became addicted to cocaine. The only reason I find this interesting (in a non-weird way) is because the person who made this claim also claimed that Tom thought Stevie was making her cocaine problem worse and was enabling her. I just wonder if this will be discussed in the book if it is true.

A little more info regarding the debacle over "Don't Come Around Here No More" and Stevie ultimately surrendering the song to Tom
"Don't Come Around Here No More" was a breakthrough smash for Petty, but it almost didn't happen: He, co-writer / producer Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and co-producer Jimmy Iovine made it in a recording session for Stevie Nicks.
"Tom had come down, and he liked what we were working on," explains Nicks. "I was writing madly. I had my little book, and I was just writing, writing. Tom, Jimmy, and Dave were sort of talking. But it was five in the morning, and I was really tired. So I said, 'I'm going to go. I'm leaving you guys, and I'll be back tomorrow.' I left, and when I got back the next day, at something like 3 p.m., the whole song was written. And not only was it written, it was spectacular. Dave was standing there saying to me, 'Well, it's terrific, and now you can go out...and you can sing it.' Tom had done a great vocal, a great vocal. I just looked at them and said, 'I'm going to top that? Really? I got up, thanked Dave, thanked Tom, fired Jimmy and left."

Rock icon Tom Petty traded his slingshot for a box of 45-rpm records after shaking the hand of Elvis Presley, when the King rolled through the town of Ocala, Florida in the mid-fifties.
Petty, a Southern hillbilly from Gainesville, knew then what he wanted to do in his life after he escaped his dysfunctional home life with a father who was a drunk and 'beat the living s**t' out of him.
On the long road to live his musical dream, he never envisioned years with a mentally ill wife who threatened suicide and his own dissolute escape into heavy heroin addiction that almost took his life at the height of his musical success.
'I was used to living in hell. My parents' marriage was hell... I lived through being terribly abused as a kid, and then I found myself in an abusive marriage'.
'I probably spent a month not getting out of bed, just waking up and going, 'Oh, f***'. The only thing that stopped the pain was drugs', Petty confesses to the author Warren Zanes in Petty, The Biography, published by Henry Holt and Co.
Zanes was in his own band, the Del Fuegos, when he first met Petty in Los Angeles and invited him to see his band perform, and Petty and his family agreed to be interviewed at length for the biography.

'He was a man with kids he couldn't help. A man with tremendous wreckage in his personal life, a man divorcing his longtime wife, a woman who was struggling with delusional thoughts and a mind that was turning on her.
'He was still a man playing at the edge of death', writes the author. Zanes, and even his close friend, singer Stevie Nicks, didn't realize that Petty had slipped into heroin addiction.

It took years for Petty, now 65, to get past feeling that his father, Earl, a salesman of 'really crappy plastic toys' or insurance was anything less than an 'a**hole' for the physical and mental abuse that colored his entire life.
When Tom nailed the fin of a '55 Cadillac with a slingshot, his father 'beat the living s**t of me' with a belt.
'He beat me so bad that I was covered in raised welts, from my head to my toes. Five years old. I was f***ing five.'
Realizing that he wasn't going to get an education in that household, he escaped into television.
'And I think it was television that saved my life, that raised and educated me.'
None of the families on television were like his. He and his younger brother, Bruce, were basically on their own. Nothing like Ozzie and Harriet's warm and fuzzy life existed in their world.
But he did see that everything great was coming from California – television city, Hollywood.
'Television city? Man, that's where I need to be,' he thought.
But he still had to escape from the land of the lost in Florida and his father's idea of what his son should do in life.
Petty liked art, clothes and wearing his hair long after the Beatles arrived on the music scene.
'After he started beating me, I thought, "I'm not going near that motherf****r'.'
Kitty Petty, his mother, acted as a buffer between Earl and Tom, until she came down with epilepsy and cancer.
'Strange as it might sound, I think both my mother and father were probably scared that I was gay.

He got straight F's in school subjects in which he wasn't interested. But he did love the girls and didn't let that on to his father. If a girl in junior high school didn't show him the same attraction he felt for her, he was traumatized and felt paralyzed.
'When I got my feelings hurt, I really couldn't have felt worse. It was physical. My throat clamped up, and I just wanted to die'.
'As a young man and as a child... I was very sensitive, too delicate. When it came to emotional stuff, I could break like a twig'.
The Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 was the road map for Petty's exit from the deep south and he started forming a band in Gainesville, the Sundowners and then Mudcrutch.
While members of the band were changing and evolving, Petty lived with Jane Benyo.
Smoking cigarettes and 'herb,' playing songs and talking about how to make a record demo was a daily ritual with band members. The plan evolved to head for the promised land – Hollywood.
Jane insisted they get married before they left Florida.

Tom didn't want to, but honored his mother's request to do 'the right thing'.
Los Angeles was everything he dreamed it would be. Mudcrutch cut an album and critics helped build up the momentum so it was getting airplay.
Petty rented a small house in Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley and Jane started having babies, two girls, but this wasn't the life that she envisioned.
It was a lonely existence with Tom rarely home. So she got high and drank to ease her loneliness and isolation.
Tom's music was drawing other artists to him and one of those seduced by the music was singer Stevie Nicks, from Fleetwood Mac, who suggested even before she met him that she would leave her monumentally successful Fleet group and joined what was by then Petty and the Heartbreakers.
While Tom's mother lay dying in a hospital room back in Florida, he visited her for the last time but she was all but gone and unable to communicate.
He left the hospital knowing he'd never see her again, and rode the elevator down to the parking lot with his father who hit him up for some money.
It wasn't the last time he saw Kitty Petty - he was haunted by his mother.
She 'made her way into her son's sleep, waking him in one hotel room or another. She was a complicated ghost, all but lost to her children for so long but always remembered as the one who tried to bring some pure love into their lives'.
Stevie Nicks entered into Petty's life by hiding out in a bedroom downstairs in his home so she could listen to his music.

'There was a chemistry that Stevie called 'intense, fiery' as they worked and played together.
She was doing a lot of drugs when she first showed up and indulged Jane who embraced it.
'Petty's friendship with Nicks would finally be one of the few human constants in his life outside of his band, management, and crew. She'd come in and out over decades'.
'She came into my life like a rocket, just refusing to go away'.
Even Stevie realized there was a deep sense of connection in Tom and Jane Petty's marriage – but it was a troubled dream that was falling apart.
Petty arrived home from recordings session to find Jane passed out in the hallway – not from liquor alone.
Touring on the road doing a lot of coke and then back home only briefly before hitting the road again and consuming more coke, Petty was now a rock 'n' roll star but his family life was decimated.
By 1984, he knew he was leaving his marriage.
Tom considered canceling an eighteen-month road tour with Bob Dylan in 1986,because Jane was losing a fight with mental illness at their home in Encino, in the San Fernando Valley but Stevie convinced him to go. Stevie went along as well 'having a great time' and joining them on stage.
Back in Los Angeles and off the road, Tom left his wife moved into a house in the Pacific Palisades and suffered terrible pain and guilt over leaving his family.
He could communicate through his songwriting but not in his personal life.
Petty's older daughter, Adria, told the author her mother loved Tom so much and had so much pride in his success, but her insecurity and resentfulness consumed her and turned her into a mean person.

She became verbally abusive and cruel towards Tom and the two girls long before the divorce. 'She suffered from mental illness,' Adria said.
'Jane would call regularly, obsessively, and threaten suicide if he said he was hanging up,' writes Zanes..
Tom met Dana York at a concert in Texas in the early 90's but they didn't reconnect until 1996 when Dana's first marriage was over.
Tom and Dana both felt as though they had known each other their entire lives and were fast falling in love.
With his life changing and the emotional walls that Petty had formed in childhood, he was sinking into a deep depression.
He entered therapy before getting divorced.
A life of hell in Gainesville segued into an abusive marriage.
Nobody realized though that Tom was now using heroin – not even Stevie.
'I would never imagine, not in a million years that Tom Petty would start using heroin', Stevie said.
'I mean, we used to sit around and drink, and we did coke and smoked pot – and that was hard enough on us.
'But if you'd have said to me that Tom Petty was doing that, I wouldn't have believed you for a second'.
Stevie was someone Petty discussed his feelings with and she offered a home to Dana before Dana got her own apartment.
Tom was using and didn't want Dana to know and kept it from her for a long time – while Jane called obsessively and threatened suicide.
'I'd stepped onto a fast-moving train, but we were having moments of tremendous happiness. Chaos and darkness and all this happiness at the same time', Dana Petty told the author.
But the elephant in the room was heroin.
Petty's therapist told him that 'People with your level of depression don't live. 'They kill themselves or someone else'.
'He was a man playing at the edge of death'. says the author.
It was Dana who saved him, Petty admits.Going off with her complicated his guilt but he couldn't deal with his depression, drugs and two teenage daughters.
He felt responsible for the failure of the family for too long – but his daughters agree that his love for them never changed.
During those dark days of his addiction, Petty says the heroin played 'dirty tricks' on him by initially relieving his depression and then compounding it.
'He was a man with tremendous wreckage in his personal life, a man divorcing his longtime wife, a woman who was struggling with delusional thoughts and a mind that was turning on her.
'He was still a man playing at the edge of death,' enslaved and couldn't figure out how to quit.

'It's an ugly f***ing thing'. Very few people get off of it'. says Petty.
Dana's own father struggled with addiction most of his life so she understood the complications and was willing to stand by him.
Tom was hospitalized when he admitted to his therapist that he was a drug addict.
'They shoot this drug into you that literally drives the heroin out and your body goes into spasms. It forces the detox process'. Two days later, he woke up.
Back home, a doctor came daily for months to administer a medication that blocked the effects of an opiate.
Dana was there waiting when he came through it all and Petty put his relationships with his daughters back together after being emotionally absent for years.
Songwriting made Petty's life more livable when his mind was pulling him towards the darkness.
His songs were his safe house – through the tormented childhood, the dissolution of his first marriage.
Petty has sold more than eighty million records.

So it's interesting how they say he didn't want to do the Dylan tour but Stevie talked him into it. She's quoted in an interview somewhere talking about how his wife didn't want to go on the road and Stevie told him he should "buy her a Porsche or some diamonds" to convince her to go. It's also interesting that Stevie indulged Jane regarding drugs, which sounds like she was sharing her drug stash with Jane.... Her talking him into going on the tour isn't really surprising. She hasn't typically had a lot of patience with people who do or don't do things because of their spouse. This is the woman who told Sheryl Crow she'd never have another hit record if she adopted those babies....she's very about not being encumbered.
I'm kind of not surprised that Stevie was clueless about how bad his addiction was on several levels, most notably because during the 90s she was so messed up herself.
And she hid out in a downstairs bedroom in his house??

What It Was Like Writing Tom Petty’s Life Story BY JOHN SEABROOK
Zanes also had access to the Heartbreakers. He soon found himself in the middle of some conversations that the band was having through him—conversations they had never had with themselves. Petty is a rock star who is also a member of a band that has been together since the mid-seventies, and it is difficult to be one without undermining the other. Stan Lynch, the band’s longtime drummer, who eventually quit in 1994, is unsurprisingly the most critical of Petty. Among his more pointed criticisms concern the song “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” which Petty did with Stevie Nicks. In Lynch’s mind, it was a Heartbreakers song. Lynch talked to Zanes for two days straight about his long years of having to prove that he was the right drummer. Jimmy Iovine is known to have obsessed over the drum sound in Petty’s 1979 album “Damn the Torpedos,” which Iovine produced, and Lynch became the object of his frustration.

Regarding their fiery relationship, the author probably wasn't referring to sexual passion.
On the other hand, reading between the lines, I would assume they slept together, but were never a couple.
Creatively, they fought.
The connection Petty felt with Nicks would carry them for years, though it had its own volatilities. "She got really mad at me one night in Australia," says Petty. "We were talking about FM, something about the band, and I said, 'Yeah, but the Heartbreakers are a rock-and-roll band.' She kind of lost her mind saying, 'I'm in a rock and roll band!' 'Not really,' I told her. And she said, 'How dare you say that to me?' And this long debate ensued about how you get those credentials. And I love that band, have the greatest respect for Lindsey and Mick, but I didn't see them as a rock and roll band.
I thought her journey was different than mine. There was a rub, like I didn't always agree with her musical taste, and she didn't always agree with mine. My frustration with her was, 'You need somebody to remind you what you're capable of. You get too easily distracted by bull****ters that want to make a hit. I don't know why you're doing all this synthesizer rock.' I was probably an asshole when I think about it. But I felt free enough with her that I could do that." When tole that he and Nicks certainly SOUND like a couple, Petty appears to be a man who can't argue the point. 'Well,' he says, we were close ... We were never what you'd call 'an item.' But we certainly had our times."

Boy this just reinforces what I've said before that he is one of the best sources of commentary on Stevie. Soooo right.
Reminds me of her talking about him in the little video about the song Hard Advice.... how he's so brutally honest no matter what. And during that time when she was making that "synthesizer rock" she was pretty full of herself (and drugs) and boy no one could tell her anything....except Tom, though clearly she didn't listen. (Which makes me think of his story of how he was at a FM recording session and Chris asked him to ask Stevie to do something they wanted her to do because, she said, Tom knew Stevie better than they did).
I recall her saying in the last couple years something about him referring to her phase as a "pop star" or something very close to that.
That's always been the biggest difference between Stevie and Lindsey... she claims to not let others tell her what to do but boy she lets other people determine what her music should be, whereas Lindsey lets no one (mostly) tell him what his music will be.
I agree with Michele, they weren't a couple but it seems highly likely they slept together at some point. For her not to have would be so totally out of character.
I've always wondered if the song Street Angel was about him.... the references to him being homeless (i.e, when he had moved out on his family) and then turning around and going back to the children and music and people that he loved....(when he didn't get divorced and went back). I know people think it's about Rupert Hine, and who the hell knows, but something in it always made me think of Tom.

Thanks to everyone posting those passages from the book. I am a HUGE Petty fan so I eat this stuff up. Its been awhile that I have seen the album sleeve of Bella Donna but doesn't Stevie dedicate Edge of 17 to Jane?
My favorite story is from Dave Stewart's interview on Stern a few years ago. The story behind "Don't come around here no more" is fascinating. Short story: Stevie meets Dave right after the Wild Heart tour at the American Music Awards. She has no idea who he is. Dave says Stevie looked sad and she invited him to her house. Dave stayed in Stevie's bed all night but Stevie and her back up singers spent most of the night giggling in the bathroom doing loads of coke. Stevie kept changing clothes and putting on all kinds of dresses while Dave laid in the bed. In the wee morning hours Dave hears a male's voice downstairs. It was Joe Walsh who came to Stevie's house. Dave hears Stevie say "Don't come around here no more" Dave loved this line and wrote the song for Stevie.
I am not sure how this song would have sounded with Stevie singing it. When I first heard the song I hated it but so did many Petty fans. The song was not your typical Heartbreaker sound. But when I first heard the song I thought Stevie was singing back up. Doesn't it sound like Stevie singing back up? I know its not her but I always thought that was strange.

He is sort of vague. He does not say they have sex and I think Stern pressed him on this. I just read between the lines and don't think Dave is going to say that about Stevie since they are good friends and work together today. But things were so out of control during those years that its totally possible they never had sex.
Back to Tom: There are such parallels between Stevie and Tom during this era. Stevie's Rock A Little album was delayed for almost a year due to the craziness in Stevie's life. Tom's Southern Accents album was also delayed about a year due to personal problems. During the recording, Tom punched a wall and broke his hand and was not able to play guitar for a long time. During this time Tom was mixing with Dave Stewart who admitted during this time he dropped acid all the time. The Don't Come Around Here No More video has subtle hints about these acid trips. In the video, Dave is on top of the mushroom as the mad hatter at the beginning of the video.
There is a video of Stevie on Stage with Tom and Bob Dylan in Australia that used to be on youtube. Stevie looks horrible. Her voice is so raw and it looks like she bought her clothes at K mart. Can you imagine the amount of partying and drugs that were flowing at these shows  Instead of preparing for her long awaited RAL release and upcoming tour, Stevie was partying it up in Australia where she was only allowed to take the stage once.

I have to admit I didn't like the song as much as Petty's other works. Maybe it's because Dave wrote it. Nothing against Dave, he seems like a nice guy but I could never bear to listen to his music, both solo and Eurythmics.
I haven't seen that video but will be sure to give it a watch, can't imagine Stevie ever not looking her best. She must have been totally out of it if that is the case.

Dave and Stevie had sex. Stevie and her background singers seduced him. They fornicated. They did the humpty dance. They scrogged. He stuck it in her. She got back at Jimmy.
I know you're being sarcastic but I couldn't imagine sleeping with Dave. No offence to him. But no.

Can you imagine the amount of partying and drugs that were flowing at these shows
I was there and I hate to say it but Stevie REALLY looked and sounded terrible, Bob Dylan was performing at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, when Stevie randomly just came out on stage. At first i didn't recognize her, but the voice kinda sounded familiar so i zeroed in, as i got closer you could of knocked me down with a feather .. i thought what the hell  she has changed soooo much since last seeing her... Anyway im glad we all survived the good old 80's, just the way things rolled back then ;) the never ending party's ..

Tom and Stevie's relationship has always fascinated me. I'm interested in Tom in general too, so I'm definitely going to pick up this book.
For the record, I thought it was common knowledge that Dave and Stevie slept together.

I found a video but its not the best quality. Does it bring back memories? It looks like Stevie has white cowgirl boots on with possible leg warmers. It also looks like she has a jacket on with lots of pleats. She has the biggest mom skirt on too
Her yelling instead of singing hurt the song IMHO.

Are we still believing this?
Yes. I never felt any vibe that they were ever romantically involved. Stevie insinuated herself into the Heart Breakers because she liked the sound of the band, and she wanted to be the female version of him, making that style of music. The connection was musical, not romantic.
Their relationship seems more like a brother and sister. I love her story of how his wife was telling Stevie that she meet Tom "at the age of seventeen." Because of her southern accent, Stevie heard it as "at the edge of seventeen". Like any true artist, Stevie took that simple thought and turned it into what has become one of her signature/classic songs.

:D Yeah that's it, great memories so many great artists performed at this outdoor venue during our Summer. Thousands of people were content to sit or wander around the outside of the fenced area or even climb trees for a better view.. my friend and i were outside just before Knocking on heavens doors somehow we managed to sneak in, we only stayed for a couple of songs. Yeah regarding her outfit  what was she thinking oh well at least she was having a good time

Did Dave just stay in Stevie's bed or did they actually sleep together? This subject has always been unclear to me.
[i hope I did this correctly]
Dave Stewart said in a interview that one night he & Stevie "Made love. Twice." It's kind of a cute story. He saw her *somewhere* and said "I wan to be your boyfriend!" Later that evening, he rode with her & some other ppl to her house. He sat downstairs for a rather long time while Stevie & some of her girlfriends were upstair somewhere. Everyone was pretty intoxicated. He was falling asleep (passing out?!), so he searched for a bedroom to crash in. Later he awoke to find that Stevie was there in the bedroom trying on ' Victorian dressing gowns' is how I think he put it. And his clothes were in a pile on the floor. Stevie got in bed wth him, and they had sex. Twice.
BTW I want to point out that he said he asked her if it was okay for him to tell that story. Before he told the world. That's very gentlemanly compared to Mr. Henley. And perhaps Mr. Fleetwood too?

Tom Petty.
I have a feeling that they may have hooked up, but if they did, it wasn't a regular thing.
I've wondered if his song "A Thing About You" is about Stevie.
"I'm not much on mystery/ You gotta be careful what you dream..."
A cautionary tale about using restraint; yet he is mesmerized & "hypnotized" by someone.
I'm not sure if the timeline of when the song was written fits tho.

Got my copy Friday....everyone (particularly Tom and Benmont) are pretty complimentary of Stevie. About the only one who really bashes her is Stan Lynch, who pretty much says "Stevie Nicks? Don't get me started!"

Wow I honestly don't think she looks or sounds that bad at all? I guess that's a matter of personal preference and I have a soft spot for everything RAL-Stevie.
Here are 2 pics from that same performance, she's just wearing some kind of poncho, but she was also wearing some pretty weird things later that year during her tour.

Was this during the tour with Petty and Dylan? If so, this was when she was at her absolute worst , health-wise. I was interning at Modern at the time and remember the phone calls that were coming in....they literally weren't sure if Stevie would make it through the tour...or the night!

Well Paul Fishkin was heading up her label and he said right in her Behind the Music episode that they literally had to scrape her off the floor some nights she was such a mess during the worst part of her addiction and that there were overdoses on the road. Petty has said he was waiting to hear that she had overdosed and died. So I believe there were a lot of "they"s who were wondering if she'd survive.

But I felt free enough with her that I could do that."
Wow. I love that he is/was this voice for her. I guess we all knew it, but this is so powerfully put. "You need someone to remind you what you're capable of." She really did and maybe still does huh?

Its the same time frame but not from the on stage performance in the video. She is wearing a redish jacket that opens in the front and is not a poncho. This black and white photo looks like a photo shoot especially the way she is looking at the camera. It does not look like the live performance on the video. Maybe a sound check photo shoot?

Im pretty sure this was the outfit she was wearing in Melbourne, so it would be a live photo shot taken, i think it was either black, brown or even maroon  and white, with a white longish skirt & boots.. Didn't look very flattering that's for sure at the time..
