Stevie Nicks has revealed that her relationship with ex-boyfriend and ongoing bandmate Lindsey Buckingham continues to remain tense despite the decades that have passed since their break up. The pair broke up during the recording sessions for Fleetwood Mac's multi-platinum selling 1977 studio album Rumours.
According to a new cover story interview posted Jan. 14 at Rolling Stone, the two-time Grammy winner maintains that tensions between the former lovers remain "exactly" the same as when they broke up. Despite the break up, ongoing infighting and the pursuit of solo careers, the pair have remained in Fleetwood Mac and are part of the current reunion tour, which includes the return of long estranged Mac singer-songwriter Christine McVie, which begins its second U.S. leg Jan. 16 in St. Paul, Minneapolis, at Excel Energy Center and wraps up April 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Characterizing their relationship as antagonistic, the diminutive diva describes the conflict in an interview with Rolling Stone. "He and I will always be antagonizing to each other, and we will always do things that will irritate each other, and we really know how to push each other's buttons," says Nicks. " We know exactly what to say when we really want to throw a dagger and I think that that's not different now than it was when we were 20."
Over the holiday season, Nicks made a surprise appearance at Deer Tick's New Year's Eve gig. The two-time Grammy winner joined the alt-rockers onstage to help celebrate their final night of a 10th anniversary six-night stand in Brooklyn, New York, at the Brooklyn Bowl to perform her 1975 Fleetwood Mac hit "Rhiannon."
Nicks recently released a new solo studio album 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, which hit shelves Sept. 30 via Reprise and will spend most of 2015 touring the world with Mac's hugely successful On With The Show Tour, which will include a headline appearance June 14, 2015 at the Isle of Wight Festival and multiple night runs May 27-28, as well as June 22-30 at London's prestigious O2 Arena . Did you know? Prior to joining with Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham released at studio album together titled Buckingham Nicks in 1973.

Christine is also quoted is Stevie's Rolling Stone article..
“Stevie is very direct, very honest, very self-obsessed in a way. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. She has her brand, you know? She’s an icon. She’s a genius. She’s a lovely, kind, beautiful woman, and I love her to death"

Or maybe 'we sat down and talked and forgave each other and things are better than ever' and 'we still antagonise one another and have arguments' just aren't as mutually exclusive as you seem to think...
Or maybe the assumption that it's the 'we're getting along' is the PR 'lie' rather than the 'we're not getting along' isn't 100% correct...
Or maybe she focuses on different elements of the relationship (positive/negative) depending on her mood, the interviewer, the publication, the time, and neither of those elements is their relationship in totality...
The 'being able to push one another buttons' is just ONE of the consistent things in the 'we never change' spiel she gives A LOT.
"In many, many ways, Lindsey and I are still the same people that we were when we met at 16 and 17. There’s a part of our relationship that remains unchanged. It doesn’t matter that he’s married with kids. It doesn’t matter what my life is. When we’re together we can still be incredibly teenage."
"My relationship with Lindsey is pretty much the pivotal one in my life… Meeting him was my destiny… It doesn’t matter whether the other person has married or had children. What matters are the things you experienced together."
"It was the same when we were 16 and 17 as it is now that we’re 63 and 64. We’re exactly the same people."
"He’s found a good, happy, calm, safe place — but who Lindsey and I are to each other will never change.”
"It’s still the same fire, oh yeah, because Lindsey and I, you know, we have that everlasting love affair, that though, he’s married and has 3 children, can you believe that, he has 3 children - and he is a total dad, you know, he has been taking little girls to ballet lessons - but we still have that dynamic, that just is, that just exists, and will still be existing when we are 90 years old."
Hmm, maybe the part about him singing like an angel. :xoxo:
sure. and how about oh i don't know?? tons of other stuff!! sifting through these interviews to try understand what's actually going on with this practically biggest touring band nowadays is not really helpful. ;)
i scanned that RS interview and was amazed at all the regurgitating of every single FM legendary thousand-times told story and practically nothing new. she was not promoting any new product (or her solo career, really). why was she interviewed exactly?
when Mick had similar RS interview he was announcing the end of FM... what was she announcing? that Christine came back and therefore they could sell out twice over all the same venues they couldn't last year and yet Christine is just a supporting character in this interview somehow. why? why was Christine not the one interviewed?

Say what you want about, Stevie Nicks (and mgmt).. but the girl is a marketing genius. And I am dead serious about that. These people lap it up like a soap opera. She knows how to sell herself and she commits to her stories, her music and her marketing.. I seriously think the woman is smarter than all of them.

It wasn't to announce anything. It wasn't to promote anything in particular, really, except HER. It's part of trying to build a certain legacy for herself, I believe.
And not 'sure'. One thing she's always been consistent on is that she truly believed and believes in Lindsey's talent. She used to make tapes of his guitar parts to do ballet to, lol.
"I love Lindsey. I love him very, very much and I wanted Lindsey to make it and I wanted this album to be as successful as…If this album is more successful than my album, I would be so glad. You know, when "Trouble" (the single from Buckingham’s LP) came out, I was saying, let it go straight to the top. Because it only makes my life easier when Lindsey is happy. ‘Cause when Lindsey is happy, he’s really in a good humor and he’s wonderful and he and I really get along and we’re close. For me, when you love somebody, you want them to be the best."
[Stevie Nicks, 1982]
"Because by that time [when Buckingham Nicks was dropped] I was to the point where… You know, I’m very loyal and I certainly was Lindsey’s biggest fan and I thought he was the greatest guitar player in the world and had the most beautiful voice. He’s one of those people that I walked into the room once and he sat there and played a song and it was room’s on fire. He’s one of those. He’s one of those men.
And whatever I had to do to keep him going was okay because it was more important to me that Lindsey make it than it was that I made it. Because I knew that I could do a hundred other things and no one could ever take my music away from me. I could still write songs and play and I could take my music in whatever I did. I would be fine; I knew that.
I worried about him. I didn’t know what he would do and because I was so in love with him there wasn’t any - there was no question. There was never a question in my mind that I would stick in there until, if we didn’t both make it, at least I got him up there. And when you love somebody and you see the pain in their face when they even consider the fact that you might not make it, it’s like “don’t even consider the fact that we’re not going to make it; we are”. And in my heart I’m saying to myself “If I have to, y’know, if I have to comb this town, I will find somebody to listen to us, that we understand how good we are, that will at least know how good he is.”

Hmmmm??? I'm so confused?? I thought they were really still loved each other and the whole "Lindsey getting married thing and having kids" it was all a front.
I'm sorry but HOW is still loving each other incompatible with “He and I will always be anatagonizing to each other, and we will always do things that will irritate each other, and we really know how to push each other’s buttons."
She's said this kind of thing forever.
"We tangle a lot, but we love each other. We’ll always love each other. He and I will never get away from the fact that we were as one for so many years." [1982]
Saying they argue does NOT negate love. In fact, she often talks about them both together.

I do understand that you're sarcastic and it's a gentle mocking. The point stands. Nobody is spinning elaborate theories here about the family being a front, for goodness' sake. Just pointing out that her saying they argue now is nothing new, and doesn't negate any other kind of emotion, including love, thus meaning past interviews, which claim that, aren't automatically just lying PR. That's all.

I appreciate you think that. And I'm glad you get me because at the end of the day we are all fans. (and for the record, I wasn't mocking you, Nicole)
But in my opinion, she's a fantastic marketer and their relationship is staged for the benefit of the soap opera. You can post a million pictures, (and I love your gifs and pics.) but they will never convince me that it's nothing but staged. They love writing about each other because they are good at it and the fans love it. I'm just a fan of the band and the music and I'm certainly in the minority. But I've been following this band long enough to realize they set up a lot of PR that works for them..
Or maybe the assumption that it's the 'we're getting along' is the PR 'lie' rather than the 'we're not getting along' isn't 100% correct...
that's exactly my point - either story may or may not be correct. it's all just huge buckets of melodrama (that i don't really get why we need to know or care about, as long as the music is good and moving forward).
Say what you want about, Stevie Nicks (and mgmt).. but the girl is a marketing genius. And I am dead serious about that. These people lap it up like a soap opera. I agree that she's a fantastic marketer and that there are parts of the relationship staged or portrayed in a certain way to prolong the image of the soap opera for the public eye. A lot of the time it's dull to me as well, rehashing the same old thing. And well, they're not going to do PR that doesn't work for them, are they? We just disagree on the purpose of the PR and what is true behind it, I think.
Questions:
1. Crying onstage, obviously emotional choking up, one off 'I love you's, etc - staged and not real?
2. Nights when they don't or barely interact - staged and not real?
3. Embracing in the dark - staged and not real?
4. Songs they reveal YEARS later to be about the other - written about the other, or lied about years later?
5. Differences in length of hugs, type of hand clasp, etc - actually decided upon before every show or natural evolution from a lesser planned action?
6. Does 'planning' or 'staging' an interaction mean what it indicates (affection, enjoyment of each other, etc) is 'fake'?
7. Hanging out with each other away from press, or seeing the other at a solo concert, and playing down that element of the r'ship - how does that fit in?
8. Is the sentiment in songs about each other false and just for 'shippers' (if they bother to notice)? How does that fit when lyrics are straight from S's diaries or Lindsey explains their concrete origin, for example?
9. Doesn't their constant 'it doesn't go beyond the stage'/'it's not necessarily reality' talk completely NEGATE their purpose in giving other quotes and actions for shippers?

Stevie gets caught up in the *moment* onstage. She totally gets into the appearance of things-- she said the first time she sang her first song and watched herself in the mirror with tears running down her face she was hooked. So it is true I believe that for THAT moment she feels something onstage, but then just as quickly its gone. Watch her WWD tour video for a good example. She's onstage weeping and barely able to get the words out as she says goodnight to the audience. Not 30 secs later the camera is with her backstage and she's all smiling and joking with Waddy and her makeup girls. So while I don't doubt she was genuinely moved during for example the MGM show singing Say Goodbye, the moment passes. If she really ever had wanted to get involved with Lindsey again, she had YEARS to do it. He admits he was emotionally guarded, at arms length from most of his girlfriends because he was still all twisted up over Stevie. Yes they love each other, like you love your crazy ass relatives... But romance? Real romance? Long gone. Stevie just gets caught up in the tragic heroine stuff. And he's long moved on.

Okay, well, in my experience & recollection most RS cover features for artists are just that - features for the artist. You get a RS cover (in theory) because you're having or had some sort of cultural impact... And the RS story is tailored to that idea. Stevie's RS story from '81 was largely just random crap about her too. Of course, it was in light of Bella Donna... But that wasn't really the focus of the interview.
I guess I'm just surprised that people are surprised by this. Doing an interview for RS like Mick did a few years ago that isn't a huge story about you as a person or an entity isn't really the same thing. He obviously had an agenda for that.
So I wasn't expecting Stevie to talk about anything other than herself. And a large part of the interview was talking about FM, anyway. It was pretty good promo for them, really - much more than for Stevie's recent solo projects.

Questions:
1. Crying onstage, obviously emotional choking up, one off 'I love you's, etc - staged and not real? Real, but in character from the show and music and in the moment.
2. Nights when they don't or barely interact - staged and not real? Real, just as real as when he kicked her and played out of tune. They are human beings you know.
3. Embracing in the dark - staged and not real? Real, in character and caught up in the moment of the beautiful words they wrote about each other from the past romance they once shared. Christine and he embrace too, doesn't mean they're in love. I've seen him blow kisses at Mick.
4. Songs they reveal YEARS later to be about the other - written about the other, or lied about years later? Real, I don't doubt they write about each other. They are good at it, it was a past romance that was intense, and it sells and continues to sell very well.
5. Differences in length of hugs, type of hand clasp, etc - actually decided upon before every show or natural evolution from a lesser planned action?
I don't know if you ever been an actor or have done a show on stage, but these are emotions in character from the show. Caught up in the moment. You can hug anyone from your mom to the devil when caught up in the intensity of a production. It even happens in the audience. Now if I saw them making out back stage or at a hotel I would say, "Nicole!! what the hell???"
6. Does 'planning' or 'staging' an interaction mean what it indicates (affection, enjoyment of each other, etc) is 'fake'? Nope, means in character in that production.
7. Hanging out with each other away from press, or seeing the other at a solo concert, and playing down that element of the r'ship - how does that fit in? All the members have done this. They are musicians and entertainers. David Gilmour had Roger Waters come up on stage with him a few years back and they hate each other.
8. Is the sentiment in songs about each other false and just for 'shippers' (if they bother to notice)? How does that fit when lyrics are straight from S's diaries or Lindsey explains their concrete origin, for example? I believe the the sentiments in their music. Does it go beyond the characters and emtions from their past? I don't believe so.
9. Doesn't their constant 'it doesn't go beyond the stage'/'it's not necessarily reality' talk completely NEGATE their purpose in giving other quotes and actions for shippers? Not sure what you mean, but I believe he loves his wife and children and the true romance of their relationship is over and has been over for quite some time.

We can slice it any way we want. She is truly a rock legend that made herself relevant long after many people thought she would take a dive in importance. And I agree it can only help FM. I'm leaning that she'll do the album and it will be fantastic. She'll let Lindsey produce the record and then she'll go off and do her own thing.

well, now all of the sudden their relationship was always the same, always antagonistic, never changed... makes you wonder what other stuff said in these interviews is complete fiction.
what I can't get over is the writer talks about his attributes like his cheekbones, and never once mentions those blue eyes!!

I though that was a Johnny Cash song (unless you're talking about a different song.
So I wasn't expecting Stevie to talk about anything other than herself. And a large part of the interview was talking about FM, anyway. It was pretty good promo for them, really - much more than for Stevie's recent solo projects.
see i keep seeing statements like this and they confuse me. what does FM need promo for? their tour is already practically sold out. and they don't have any new music to promote, thanks to the band member being interviewed here.
as Nicole stated, this looks solely a promotion for SN as a legend (which you just explained to me RS does a lot, so thanks for that - i haven't read RS other than occasional article for ages and have no idea what its influence status is these days). FM is heavily featured in the article since it plays integral part in SN being a kind of legend she apparently wants to be - article points out that solo she had her pop princess period in the 80s while band gives her a rock goddess status - or something like that.
how is singling out a band member who seems to be stalling progress of the band towards new album, while not being asked any questions about possible new album in the interview, a good promo for what this band seems to be about or wants to do?
it's a perspective on the band from a point of view of one member, who from interview snippets seems almost disconnected from the rest of the band yet at the same time presents as a face of that band... meanwhile article throws little daggers at the rest of the band for all purposes painting them as petty people jealous of SN for one reason or another, putting those words in their mouth without any actual statements from them - perhaps because apparently they were not interested about talking specifically about SN as an "icon" (only CM agreed to play along). the statement from the article writer about Mick is odd (and extremely self-important!) - apparently it's not enough for this guy that Mick said hi to him and shook his hand, while in the middle of his ritual before going on the stage for the show... what else did he want? i guess Mick should have offered to make coffee for him or something?

Anything that keeps their name and success as an entity relevant & in people's minds is good promotion for the band.
You can't promote a product that doesn't exist.... there is no new album to push, at the moment. But promoting the BRAND that is FM will help retroactively the next time they do venture out to do something artistically, if that ever happens.
I don't know how that could possibly be hard to understand.

see, I'm not so sure she really promoted the band with this, other than the very literal "putting their name out there" again. The walk-away impression one gets from the piece is that the band is really a big clusterf*ck of tensions and resentments by these people of Stevie… her beauty, her success, blah blah blah. What it leaves you with is a sense of what a wonderful person she is for sticking around so long when clearly out of all of them she could most easily have walked away and stayed famous. I mean even the comment about 'Lindsey would have been the star in any other band'-- while at first seeming like a bit of a mark against Stevie-- in its own way says he's better than most other rock players but even he's not better than our Stevie, who has this better "package" of stage presence, looks, talent etc etc. That can't contribute in any way (even if some think it's true) to harmony within the band. We all know that's Lindsey's bugaboo--- being overlooked for his 'substance'' by Stevie's 'flash'. And look, now he's being petty and banging on the wall like an old fart because the music's too loud…. again, not a great image that lingers in readers' minds. Lindsey's not stupid, and he's a bit overly sensitive about this topic, so this article's presentation of him can't really help internal band politics now can it? (with the caveat that maybe if he knew there was a RS reporter there he could have behaved accordingly, i.e. not given them any ammunition)
Let's face it, to borrow a quote from American politics used when judging presidential candidates.. "who would you rather have a beer with?" well, when Stevie does interviews and shows everyone her funny, charming side, like in this article, and we see Lindsey as a grouchy old poop who still seems to hold a grudge over sh&t from 30 years ago, most (casual) readers will think, "I'd rather hang out with HER." And that's the point of articles like this. To boost her brand.

Just personally speaking, I do get the impression that she might have been trying to get the audience to sympathize with her...in case something does happen to the band in regards to an album? I don't know, but the article doesn''t really portray the other members in a neutral light, nor in a positive one.
However, I thought the part about Tom Petty was a little hilarious. He seems to be more of a proponent of the band over their solo careers...not exactly in line perhaps with the Stevie solo push, perhaps?
All that being said, personally, I do get the impression that she's still committed to the band. In an article that's about her, she does most of her talking about being in a band and while it's not all positive, she does seem to reinforce her commitment to the band with the Jefferson Airplane and the "we choose to stay..." comments. I think Nicks knows her brand isn't bigger than Fleetwood Mac's, and while she herself is a successful solo artist and a pioneer for women in rock, the band itself has almost reached immortality (in terms of the greatest bands of all-time). She herself said that she was in a band just as successful as the men she dated and that sounds like something she's proud of, and proud to be a part of.
Perhaps she's promoting herself or her perspective, or establishing her place in rock, but it's not without acknowledging the role the band played in her career and life. She seems to really prize that identity as a woman with a solo career, but somebody that is also a part of a legendary band...something that many women today really can't claim. She is different in that sense.
Anything that keeps their name and success as an entity relevant & in people's minds is good promotion for the band.
You can't promote a product that doesn't exist.... there is no new album to push, at the moment.
that's only if you think no publicity is bad publicity.
and, plenty of bands have interviews in RS and other magazines talking about and building buzz for the albums they are working on and intending to release in the future.

yes. it almost looks like she's promoting not the band but the dysfunction in the band and building up her position so she has more leverage in some future inside-band stand-off - since apparently she's so great and they are so petty.

 hey, maybe she sent Karen over to impersonate Lindsey and bang on the wall to try make him look grumpy? ;) i mean Lindsey himself never shows up or actually talks in this piece it's always either her or Karen or Waddy putting words in his mouth or describing his actions.

yeah, i think the album and intra-band stand-off regarding it or directions of the band is what the underlying motif might be... either that or she just likes to talk positively about herself and trash about others, in general. ;)

Exactly. The article tells you they've had a sold out tour, which indicates not only that "Hey, they're still together!" but that they're still together AND people still want to hear them play [so they must still be good.] And with the quotes by Petty and Christine, reminds you that Stevie Nicks wouldn't be anywhere without FM & that they're better as a group.
I think claims that it portrays the band in a negative light are a bit exaggerated. Does the article portray Fleetwood Mac as a group of individuals who are best friends and exist completely harmoniously? No, certainly not.... but that's precisely in-line with what they've established as their whole shtick over the past forty years. They perpetuate that love-hate-fighting-fornicating fiasco every time they do anything and it's a constant focus of their publicity. Why? Because it sells. Nothing in this article is new information - it's not changing anyone's perception of the band. It's just reaffirming that "those crazy kids are still going at it!"
(Well, I guess Lindsey banging on the wall is something new. But isn't it way more interesting to read that Lindsey banged on Stevie's wall to get her to turn Nelly Furtado down than say, Lindsey knocked politely on the door to ask Stevie if she wants some tea? It's hilarious and makes them seem like real people with a real relationship... Stevie seems obliviously annoying, and Lindsey seems (understandably) annoyed BY her. That's pretty much their dynamic in a nutshell.)

Yes, I do think no publicity is bad publicity, in this case.
Would you rather the entire story have gone by without a single mention of Fleetwood Mac or any of it's [to quote the article] Non-Stevie members?
That would have been something to be concerned about.
And re: promoting the alleged new album.... it's been clear for pretty much ever that Stevie's the one holding back from making new music with FM, regardless of whether or not she ends up inevitably doing it. So her using a "Stevie Nicks"-centered article to push a potential FM project spearheaded by other members that she wasn't interested in was never something I had on the list of "things that have a chance in hell of happening," therefore I was not disappointed when, well, it didn't. I understand the frustration there, 'cause I've had it myself, but...it is what it is.

I used to enjoy reading tons of articles about them. Kind of trying to work out their complex relationship via the knowledge obtained by my minor in psychology about a hundred years ago.
Then, I did figure it out. They're both nuts.
And I don't really need to read those articles anymore.
Although, I will buy a few for the pretty pictures:lol:

As to come think about it. My parents were divorced after 17 years of marriage. My late sister was the peacekeeper of the family and she got them together for the family holiday dinners and summer picnics. For 30 years after .The divorce the bickering still went on.

They perpetuate that love-hate-fighting-fornicating fiasco every time they do anything and it's a constant focus of their publicity. Right on. What's odd is that we ledgies are the ones who keep hoping for those relationships to turn permanently Hallmark, as if the wisdom of age and experience makes you square your shoulders and be overcome with affection for your bandmates. So we read all the interviews and watch all the activity onstage, and whenever there's something sweet going on—a compliment, a smile, a kiss—we figure that's the long-hoped-for breakthrough in the relationship. But I think the rest of the world (or at least the rest of the world that ever thinks about Fleetwood Mac) isn't bothered at all by the cattiness, the insults (they're a little more veiled the past few decades than they used to be), the refusals to participate, the demands, the passive-aggressiveness. Because that's how people behave in real life—unless they're Mr. Rogers or Judith Martin. If I think of the people I love or whom I'm close to in my life, I could never be confident that I would never again get mad at them. We get older and more nostalgic for all we've been through, but we don't stop getting mad or annoyed with one another.

But there's something fishy about that story because I can't picture those two checking in to adjoining hotel rooms on tour. In fact, doesn't Stevie generally go find her own multiple rooms (for all her girlfriends), sometimes in a different hotel?

I believe it was dressing rooms that were next to each other at the venue not hotel rooms and we don't know that it was actually LB "banging" and not one of his people.
"Next on the playlist is Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater”, thumping at an impressive volume. Nicks breaks into a funky, arm-waving dance from her makeup chair. Wincing slightly, she calls out to Johnston, ‘We don’t have an ice pack here do we? Because I need it.”
But her assistant had just been called out of the room on other business. “Um, Stevie?” Johnston says. “Lindsey has requested that we turn the music down.”
Nicks rolls her eyes, her expression matching the little girl’s the photograph. “OK, maybe we should go into a different tape, since he’s next door,” she says. “We can go with something that doesn’t have quite that much bang. All he’s probably hearing is the drum, like in a car. This is the first time he’s ever been next door to us. That can never happen again!”
She switches to a new playlist of singer-songwriters (Jackson Browne, Sting) and Lite FM-ish dude rock (Goo Goo Dolls, The Fray). Nicks has no fear of the uncool; She invited Kenny G to play on one of her albums, composes lyrics while listening to a New Age station on satellite radio and devoured the Twilight books by firelight, even writing a song inspired by Bella’s plight.
Nicks keeps adding her own perfect harmonies to the song on her playlist, rendering the chorus of “How to Save a Life” suddenly haunting (she thinks it’s about visiting a friend in rehab). “I never sing along to the melody,” she says. “I always go for the harmony. And that’s been since I was really little, because my granddad was a singer, and he would bring me 45s and he’d say, “You’re a harmony singer. You’re a perfect Everly Brother.” Her grandfather, A.J. Nicks, was a semipro country performer who wanted to take her on tour when she was five; her parents demurred.
After a few minutes, we hear pounding on the wall. The music still isn’t low enough. “Relations with Lindsey are exactly as they have been since we broke up,” says Nicks. “He and I will always be anatagonizing to each other, and we will always do things that will irritate each other, and we really know how to push each other’s buttons. We know exactly what to say when we really want to throw a dagger in. And I think that that’s not different now than it was when we were 20. And I don’t think it will be different when we’re 80.”

I cant blame Lindsey with the noise complaint .Maybe he wants to get some sleep or relax and watch a movie on his TV. I lived in apartments for a good 25 plus years before I got a house I had to deal with noisy neighbors as some blast crap music in their apt or out in the parking area .I would not mind if they were playing something decent .
If Stevie was my neighbor .I probably let her get away with it.LOL..
