Recently a tape of new versions of 'Prettiest Girl In The World' and 'Silent Night' went on auction and the Ivory Keys community banned together to buy it. Apparently, the tape consists of a 30 minute working tape of 'PGITW'. So far, this four minute is what's been released. Pretty interesting considering we only know one version of this song, but I'm not sure whether I love it yet.

This is horrible to hear, yet still interesting. It sounds like someone else's song is playing in the back ground and she is loosely using it as a template to form her own song.

This is similar to other recordings, where Stevie is in the very early, primitive stages of crafting a song. The lyrics have not been honed down and edited, so it's just an insufferable stream of thought gibberish.

Her process is sometimes very peculiar; she starts with material that has no clear or concise structure. It's just a rambling bunch of crappy, disjointed, somewhat impromptu prose she wrote in a notebook. It's like a big lump of clay that she then begins to mold and whittle down into a more reasonable, suitable form.

Normally, I love her rambling stream of thought. But this one is an example of where it's just clunky gibberish. It's really a mess. But because I am a "Stevie stan" I'll probably give it a few more chances lol

Well, it is just a raw working tape; one not ever intended for public consumption, so there is no need for acceptance. Spare yourself the suffering. Hearing it once is enough!

Re: it sounds like someone else's song is playing in the back ground

It is. It's called "Luka".

How very strange that song is playing in the background. It sounds like Stevie is trying to keep time with it. If Stevie heard this, I think she would be very embarrassed. Although I am a Suzanne Vega fan.

Well, there's lyrics that ended up in Real Tears in there.

Shows how limited she is in coming up with new musical ideas. If someone provides her the initial germ of the music then she is able to craft a melody and lyrics, but left to her own devices I think she used up her few original musical ideas in years ago.

I agree, one listen is enough. It's like the old saying about just eating the sausage and enjoying it in its final form; don't ever go to see how it's actually made.

This is so bad it is laughable. It just seems like she is making it as she goes along. It reminds me of the David Carvey (is that his name?) skit on SNL where he a has-been rock star. His producer visits him and want hear the songs he has written, but he hasn't written anything. So he pretends has makes up lyrics on the spot. It's a hilarious bit.

There was lady, and I knew her
If I didn't know her, she'd be the lady I didn't know
She's in the kitchen
She's chopping broccoli
Chopping broccoli
Chopping broccoliiii
Chopping broc!

In actuality, this better than the drivel Stevie spewing here.

There is just one line that she salvaged that ended up in Real Tears. There is nothing wrong with that. Prettiest Girl in the World stalled in demo stage. From an artistic perspective she has every right to pick parts of it for other songs. I don't see that as a limitation. That's something all artists/writers do!

I liked it also. I have always been a huge fan of the demos. I hear traces of No Questions Asked in this. It almost sounds like the same vocal performance.

Again, I'm sorry you heard some sort of accusation in what was simply an observation.

I'm well aware songwriters noodle around and keep some parts of what comes out of it for one song and use other parts that were cut for different songs later.

Best of the 3 versions so far.

Exactly what I was thinking. There was also an enhanced mix of this version titled, "Jeremy's Mix" with the instrumental and vocal being much more polished.

Version 4! I have to say demo 3 & 4 are significantly better. In my opinion anyway
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can someone link me to the demo that you're all referencing as being the one out before these? Honestly I'm only hearing Luka, like she's practically just singing different words to that melody. However, I would love to hear the version without the Luka background!
