As you head to the lower sections of the Forum, the walls are painted with rock stars, captured in performance. Passing through, you can't escape the fact that these are hallowed halls. George Harrison, the Bee Gees, Elton, Cher, Rod Stewart, Bowie ... there are about forty pictures altogether and there Stevie is among these luminaries. A black and white photo, about 20 feet high. I've posted it below. So many people entering this Fleetwood Mac concert probably don't even recognize that it's her.

I'm to the right side of the stage tonight. I don't get very many pictures, but it's a good position to enjoy the show. After all these years, when I hear the sound of those crickets it's still exciting. Most people don't catch on that that means that the show is about to start until the lights go down, then there's that flurry to find your place, an expectant hush, then screams, when Mick's tall figure emerges and things begin to take off.

The public displays of affection flying between the band members tonight almost reached orgy potential. I was like, "get a room, fireflies." John and Mick entered, then Christine and then Stevie and Lindsey, but they stopped by Christine's piano and Christine hugged and kissed both of them. Chain keep us together. It wasn't a song born of unity, but of desperation, pleading to stay together, all while accusing, pulling apart and running in the shadows. Yet, 37 years later, here they are, still together after all. Chained, yoked, albatrossed but, apparently, enjoying it.

After You Make Loving Fun Christine says, "Good evening Los Angeles."

Stevie says that this, the Forum, was the only place they ever played for many years. She mentioned that she used to say "Welcome Back" Chris at this time, but 27 shows in, she figures Christine is staying put. So, she'll just say, "Hello Chris."

Christine: "Hello Stevie"

Stevie: "And I guess we'll both say, 'Let's get this party started.'

For Second Hand News, I notice that Christine doesn't always sing with Stevie and Lindsey, she just comes in on the "I'm just second hand news" part.

It's so much fun to go from the riotous "tall grass," through the dark beat of Rhiannon, to the tinkling beginning of Everywhere, one is a raucous hay ride and the other is like a smooth dance beneath twinkling stars. Yet, the transition between sounds isn't jarring. One singer will put you in a certain mood and you're almost lulled into staying there, until the other singer comes along and your mind shifts again. The vibe is constantly refreshed.

For Everywhere Christine says, "I lived here for many years and I sorta wish I lived here again." Oh no, now she's burning her London bridges. Speaking of London, when this song debuts there, I can't wait to see the reception it gets. I wonder if Christine will mention the dancing pony commercial in her intro at all, as Stevie does with Seven Wonders.

Never one to miss a cycle, Lindsey says that it's fitting that they've come back to the Forum "at this particular moment ... to be back in this particular moment, with the beautiful Christine" when they begin a new chapter.

It's funny that even though her lips are waiting and her eyes look sad, I Know I'm Not Wrong, really doesn't seem like a song about love. Its implications feel more, societal, especially with the video playing in the background.

Although Christine still hasn't found it in her heart to move across to the other side of the stage at any point in the show, she does travel quite a bit with her Tusk accordion. She perches on the apron of stage right playing to the crowd, then is there to greet Lindsey when he charges over, his body sawing up and down mimicking the movements of the Trojan marching band on the screen behind them. Then, when Lindsey departs, Christine stands side by side with John for a bit, playing together.

At the end of Say You Love Me, both Lindsey and Christine do a kind of tennis stroke, swinging their arms back and forth triumphantly as if to say, "we nailed it." Christine concludes, "That was fun. Thank you very much."

After Seven Wonders, Stevie thanks the American Horror Story producers and says if it wasn't for them, the song wouldn't have been brought back, because now millions of people know it. That suggests that no one was familiar with it before AHS and that's not the case. It had a video and got more than a little radio airplay in its day. Yes, it has been introduced to a new generation, but many focused and casual FM fans would have welcomed the song anyway, television exposure or not.

Lindsey starts his Big Love speech, but then Stan comes over and says something to him. I expect him to take Lindsey's guitar, but he doesn't. Lindsey picks up where he left off, but I was hoping for an explanation. Lindsey says that 1987 seems like a long time ago, for him as an individual and in terms of where the band is right now. Oh, I don't know, Lindsey. I see some parallels between today and 1987.

Again he dedicates the song to "Will, to Lee Lee, to Stella and, of course, to Kristen, without whom I might still be in that other life." Tonight, Kristen was seated with Will. Poor thing gets so few tickets to the show that she can't even watch it with all of her children together. They have to alternate. It's a good thing they only have three kids. At least, one will get to attend each night of the Forum dates.

I'm not sure I heard Stevie correctly, but I think she said that Landslide is like a black cat that she and Lindsey can't get rid of. She said they love it, but it keeps following them around. That doesn't sound like a good thing! She dedicates the song to Haim. She plays their record every day and wraps it around her. The record tells her it will be ok and just blows her mind. She tells Haim "don't stop thinking about tomorrow."

Towards the end of the song, when Stevie and Lindsey reach for each other's hand, the audience starts to roar, almost before they even touch. Lindsey has to laugh. They finally clasp hands and sustain the grasp for quite a bit. Afterwards Stevie says, "Never stop girls. Girl power all the way." As Lindsey walks away from her, he reaches his hand behind his back, fingers curled and Stevie reaches out again, her own fingers crooked.

When Mick comes down for Over My Head, I'm not sure whether I missed something. I don't think he fell, but Stevie seems to point at him and then when Christine returns to her mic she says, "Hello, Mr. Fleetwood. You ok?" So, I'm not sure if he lost his balance or what.

She talks about 1975 when they met a remarkable young couple, namely Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. OMH is the first song off of their first album. She messes up the lyrics a bit, saying "hold me tight" too soon and then having to repeat it again in the next verse.

Stevie has to cough before the Gypsy intro. She says she took a big gulp of tea and did what singers never want to do onstage, she swallowed it down her windpipe. She adds, "We're doing so much sharing tonight."

She's a better woman than me. I would have been coughing for about 20 minutes after that. She talks about meeting Lindsey and says she was 75 years old, then laughs at her mistake. "Yes, if I was 75 years old then, imagine how old I am now. I'm a vampire." So, now she not only talks about opening for Joplin and Hendricks, but Santana, Chicago. She names the arenas they played and how many people were in attendance. She sings a snatch of "color my world." She says that they were even stuck in Lodi with Credence Clear Water.

Then, there's the Corvair, 5 speed convertible, candy apple red, that her father bought for himself but ended up giving to her. Stevie is still pretty happy about that car today, I can only imagine how she showed off and boasted about it back in the sixties.

She went to the Velvet Underground and was awed to stand on its handpainted floor, where Grace Slick and Janis Joplin bought their attire. Even though she had money from Fritz, she couldn't afford to buy anything in that store, but she had a "seizure premonition." She knew that some day she would be able to buy whatever she wanted and would never have to look at a sales tag again. As the crowd begins to applaud her inspiring words, Stevie concludes that it goes to show that if you have a dream, follow it. She says that they were just a couple of "dumb kids from San Francisco and we ended up big rock stars." Yeah, but arguably still pretty dumb ...

Although the screen playing behind the band during Gypsy is meant to be reminiscent of their original video, the guy in it looks more like Don Draper of Mad Men than anyone else.

For Gold Dust Woman, it seems like Lindsey sings a line that's not usually his. They sing "and go home" together, but just before her scream, he says "go home" alone and then she responds "and go AHHHHHHHH". It's like they're almost trading lines.

At the end of the song, when she says, "you can't do it. You just can't do it ..." there's an echo quality to her voice and it rings across the Forum as if we're all in a cave. There's a sense of distortion in her appearance too, with her hair tumbling over her face and her shawl hanging, she's more blur than form, almost like a ghost, until the end when she strikes the famous silhouette and takes the shape of Stevie again.

I think the lighting is used well throughout the show, but particularly with GDW and then I'm So Afraid, red bars descend from the ceiling when the song begins in earnest, casting an amber glow around everything. It's atmospheric at first and then, ultimately, the slow beat, the red darkness, the ambiance, is stripped away and it's just a man, a man whaling on his guitar, creating unadorned frenzy.

It's often been said that Lindsey is engaging in pure guitarbation here and there's Christine witnessing it all, from a front row seat.

While I can barely find the energy to take the 2 flights of stairs out of the building, Lindsey manages to run right from ISA into GYOW, without missing a breath. I love how he "visits" each of the band members at the end of the song, just as he did in days of yore. He's over at Christine's piano, his head against her shoulder, they're hugging without arms. Then, he stops to push himself against John. Then, he goes to Stevie. They don't actually touch, but she extends her arm with a flourish. I know that he'll have his head nuzzled in the crook of her neck before the tour ends.

When they return for the encore, Stevie and Lindsey walk out together, but Lindsey stops behind Christine. Perhaps fearing she's about to be goosed, she turns around swiftly and hugs and kisses each of them.

The sound seems to be turned up for Mick's drum solo. It's almost as if he is physically striking me with the drum sticks. "Are you with me? Don't be shy," he pounds the words out in staccato syllables.

Then, the band takes the stage again, Stevie and Lindsey marching towards each other, "World turning ..."

For the band introduction, when Mick gets to Christine, he says that this woman makes them complete, but then there's a long pause and he doesn't announce her name. Christine hilariously points to herself and says, "Me?" Mick says, "yes you. Our Songbird has returned. Christine McVie."

After Silver Springs, Stevie acknowledges the applause. "Thank you. It means a lot to me."

Returning after Songbird, Stevie is holding John's hand, as they join the others. For her final speech she says, "One thing I get after all these years is to have a moment alone with you." Is that something she's been negotiating for? I remember a few of her Greenpeace announcements at the end of FM shows 25 years ago and I imagine that those could have discouraged the rest of the band from leaving her alone with the audience for quite some time.

She points out that Christine left 16 years ago and her dog is 16, so Christine has been away an entire lifetime. Well, an entire dog's lifetime Stevie. She says she told Christine that once you come back, you can never leave again.

I'll hold Christine to that, all of them to that. You can never break the chain.

That's the type of review I wish the newspaper would give. As always Michele, thank you for making me feel like I was right there with you at this show. You paint a clear pic of sights and sounds and toss in your humorous wit which brings a smile to my face and a chuckle to my voice. And that is a real cool pic of Stevie on the Forum wall. Is there no pic of the whole band ?

I wonder how many people in the audience are genuinely confused when she makes comments like this. The amount of people in the crowd who were introduced to the song from a cult cable TV show must be absolutely minuscule compared to the amount who were familiar with it as a decent hit single from one of the biggest albums in the band's catalogue. It must seem such an odd comment.

Wonderful review, Michele. Thanks for taking the time.

.

Ha, for the past half an hour I've had that image stuck in my head- Stevie and Lindsey are like the school bullies acting in unison to wedgie Christine!!!

So much has been written about how there is tension on this tour. That's not coming through on your write-up. It sounds from what you've written as if they are all really relaxed and happy with life an each other. There seems to be a lot of banter.

No, there is no pic of the whole band, you know how that makes me feel .

But there were only about 2 whole band pictures that I saw. One was of the three Brothers Gibb. Robin was in the middle as they shared a microphone. It made my eyes water a little.

They do seem really happy, more tonight than last night. Although, I couldn't see the whole stage the first night, so maybe there was camraderie that I missed then too.

However, a few weeks ago on the tour, there wasn't this kind of all around warmth from what I've read in the other reviews. I'm sure the tide will turn a couple of more times before all is said and done.

Thank you so much Michele for the amazing review. I was there last night as well and thought you really captured the spirit of the show and the band interactions. After Elle asked me to post some pictures, I made an effort to take more photos as I was seated in the same spot as the night before. I will start posting them. They are not great quality shots, but can at least illustrate some of the interactions you've described. I don't know what these people did over Thanksgiving, but it looked to me like a full-band lovefest!

Overall I thought Christine sounded better than she had the night before and Say You Love Me was sooo much better last night than it has been on this tour. It finally had an energetic sound that has been missing. I'm thinking they may have changed the mix to bring the bass up. Whatever they did really worked!

Thanks again and I'll start trying to post my pics.

It's funny because for Lindsey's solo shows in the southern California area (not a major venue like Los Angeles, but Orange County) Kristen and the kids will bring all of their friends, I mean 30 or 40 people. But for Fleetwood Mac, I guess they watch the pocketbook a bit.

I wonder if the band likes Staples more than The forum.

I loved night #2 but thought #1 had a little more energy. I didn't like LB trying the high line on GDW. If he hit the note it might have been cool. I give him a lot of credit though--the guy brings it every night. So much energy and rarely leaves the stage. Not easy.

Harry Stiles returned with other band mates in tow. Also backstage: Natalie Maines (sitting 2 rows in front of me on the floor), Cheri Oteri, Camryn Mannheim, Jane Lynch, Haim.

I was very impressed with the sound and feel of the Forum.

You are welcome Michele! The best part is I didn't even realize I had captured the Lindsey-John hug during GOW until I got home and started to upload my photos. That was a big WHAT?!? moment for me. Wow -- what a great pic! I love to see the support and affection shown within the band. I look at that and I think what guts it must be taking Christine to come back after so many years and jump right back into playing venues like Madison Square Garden and the Forum.

At Thanksgiving dinner with my family, I kept being asked why I'm attending multiple FM shows when its the same set every night. Its moments like this picture captures that keep me coming back. Despite all the past and current differences, these crazy, wacko people always end up demonstrating that they truly care for each other and that is nothing to take for granted. I always leave an FM show feeling terrific and hope that never ends

Great pics Michele! I think they put on more of a "show" than usual because, after all, this is The Forum. Alot of family, friends, celebrities, and critics were there.I just don't know how genuine all the lovey - dovey and banter was,IMO.They aren't dumb - they know when to turn it on and off.In a post somewhere someone said this band is the biggest bunch of BSers in the world and I have to agree.Even Mick gives Stevie "cues" in interviews for goodness sake:rolleyes: I watch that video from 2013 alot when Stevie cries through the entire "Say Goodbye" song because I know it's the real deal.Anyways,I'm glad it was a great time for those who attended:thumbsup: Just my 2.5 cents.

Of course, I'm the kind of person that would feel crowded and say, "back off man," but Mick is clearly more tolerant than I am .

Fleetwood Mac at the Forum: A band reunited, team spirit intact

Fleetwood Mac played the Forum on Saturday night with Christine McVie, back after a long break

Fleetwood Mac is having a moment..

Decades after its late-1970s commercial peak, the band can still fill arenas around the world with fans eager to relive memories indelibly linked to old hits like “Dreams” and “Go Your Own Way.”

Yet Fleetwood Mac’s polished pop-rock has also become a touchstone for younger, hipper acts such as Jenny Lewis and One Direction. In 2011, the television show “Glee” built an episode around the group’s music; the next year it was the subject of a high-profile tribute album.

So it’s not hard to understand Christine McVie’s decision, announced in January, to rejoin the band after retiring in 1998.

She helped create the legend -- shouldn’t she enjoy the glory?

Fleetwood Mac’s tour with McVie, whose presence restores the lineup that made the gazillion-selling “Rumours,” stopped at the Forum for two concerts over the weekend. (It will return for a third on Dec. 6.)

But if the cheers that greeted McVie on Saturday confirmed her reasoning, the singer’s participation also reminded you that, despite its huge success, this is a deeply weird rock group, with three songwriters – McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks – whose approaches hardly seem compatible.

Backed by the stalwart rhythm section of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie (to whom she was married until 1977), Christine McVie was warm and trusting in “You Make Loving Fun” and the buoyant “Everywhere.” The cheerful optimism – and the propulsive groove – of “Don’t Stop” inspired thousands in the audience to sing along.

And though “Little Lies” hinted at the romantic deception that famously runs through Fleetwood Mac’s history, the tune’s sweet melody neutralized any sense of real desperation.

Buckingham offered no such protection as he growled the lyrics of “Big Love,” about the cold comfort of material fortune, over harsh finger-picked guitar. He was similarly intense in the stomping “Tusk” and a long, raw rendition of the bluesy “I’m So Afraid.”

“Second Hand News” was catchier but still anxious, its crisp tempo a promise of escape from the turmoil the song describes.

Then there was Nicks, who set aside her bandmates’ realism in favor of imagery rooted in history and mythology: “Rhiannon,” “Sisters of the Moon,” “Seven Wonders,” the last of which, she told the audience, had made it back into Fleetwood Mac’s set list after the song appeared in a recent episode of “American Horror Story.”

That quasi-mystical vibe is a big part of what’s endeared Nicks in particular to a new generation of musicians, including the sisters of L.A.’s Haim, to whom she dedicated “Landslide” on Saturday. (The Haim sisters weren’t the only admirers who turned up to pay their respects: According to a tweet from the Forum, Harry Styles of One Direction took in Friday’s show.)

Twirling in one of her trademark shawls during “Gypsy,” Nicks drew a wildly enthusiastic response from the crowd. And fans seemed untroubled by the adjustments she made to the melody of “Dreams,” a song whose high notes are now presumably out of her reach.

Yet that adulation hasn’t led, as it does with so many stars, to an unquenchable need for more.

Here Nicks appeared happy -- even relieved, perhaps -- to share the spotlight she grew accustomed to filling while McVie was away, and it was that sense of camaraderie that held Fleetwood Mac’s internal contradictions together.

“Once you come back, you can’t leave again,” Nicks recalled telling McVie in a rambling monologue about the reunion. That she meant it was clear when McVie, singing her ballad “Songbird,” closed the show.

11/30/2014 Stevie Nicks: 'Haim are major force in rock and roll'

By: WENN.com, Hollywood.com

Stevie Nicks gushed over sibling rockers Haim during a concert in California on Saturday (29Nov14), calling them a "major force in rock and roll". Fleetwood Mac brought its On With the Show tour, complete with keyboardist Christine McVie, to Los Angeles' The Forum venue and among those in the audience were sisters Alana, Este and Danielle Haim. Singer Nicks told the audience, "Maybe twice in my lifetime I have met a group of other singers, artists, songwriters that I have thought were going to be a major force in rock and roll. And tonight the ladies Haim are here - Alana, Este and Danielle. And I have to say, because I love sharing stuff with the audience about other people that I love - we've been on the road for 27 shows and I play their record every day; I love it... "It gives me answers, it gives me advice, it wraps its wings around me and it tells me everything will be okay, and I have such respect for them, and I have such respect for who they are and how they play music and how they put their music together, and it just blows my mind. "So, girls, never stop. Don't stop thinking about tomorrow. Don't stop. Keep doing what you're doing because you're important to this world." In October (14), Nicks invited Haim to her house for an interview with the New York Times' T Magazine, where they performed an impromptu rendition of Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon, and the legendary singer presented each sister with matching gold necklaces with moon pendants and declared them fellow "sisters of the moon". Following Saturday's concert, Haim took to Twitter.com to share a video of Nicks' dedication to them at the gig, and added the caption, "Was reunited with the original sister of the moon last night (we cried)."

Fleetwood Mac At The Forum: Please “Don’t Stop”

By Bill Dudley/CBS Radio

Fleetwood Mac is a family. They fight, they marry, they divorce, they quit the band, then rejoin. They are just like real people. Fleetwood Mac is special to so many of us, not just because of their 40 years of great and varied musical styles, but because the group has always been a reflection of our own families too.

The three Brits and two Americans have woven an essential blend of enduring music for the world since 1975. Drummer Mick Fleetwood and Bassist John McVie originally formed the group in the late 1960s as a heavy rock and blues band. John’s then wife Christine joined in 1970, staying until 1998. After a 16 year absence, keyboardist Christine McVie has rejoined the group. Over the weekend, the reunited band brought their ‘On With The Show’ tour for the first two of three nights at The Forum in Los Angeles to sold out audiences.

I attended their concert last year, and enjoyed it very much, but something was missing. It was Christine. This is forgotten by many, but it was her soothing vocals that created the very first Fleetwood Mac hit “Over My Head” back in 1976. Christine’s “Say You love Me,” “You Make Lovin’ Fun,” “Everywhere” and “Little Lies” add a softer pop mix to the hard driving guitar and energetic vocals of Lindsey Buckingham on “Tusk,” “Second Hand News,” and “Big Love.”

Buckingham and ex-wife Stevie Nicks are clearly the upfront stars of Fleetwood Mac, as the group hung around for almost a decade without much success prior to them joining the band in 1975. However, it takes all five members to totally create the Fleetwood Mac sound, and they all know it. This is quite evident on the opening number “The Chain,” the only song written by all 5 members on their historic Rumours album. “Don’t Stop” and “Go Your Own Way” are also a strong group effort.

Stevie Nicks reclaimed her title as a true “Rock Goddess” with her stirring performances of “Gold Dust Woman,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon,” “Sisters Of The Moon,” and “Landslide.” Leading into “Gypsy,” she also told a gripping story of being a broke teenager in San Francisco in the mid 1960s, and not being able to afford clothes at a store called The Velvet Underground. A few years later her first band was opening for Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and other greats of that era.

Make no mistake, Mick Fleetwood is still one of the very best drummers in the business. Mick pounds out the percussion during all of the show, staying somewhat low key by letting Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine have the spotlight, but wails on for a long drum solo on “World Turning” towards the end.

All five members of this diverse lineup are visibly emotional about the longevity and top notch performances they still have the energy to give, and are genuinely thankful for the opportunity to do so. This is not a bunch of “has been” artists grinding it out years after they have peaked. Fleetwood Mac is still a very evolving, creative band, and a damn good one.

Mick Fleetwood concludes every show by introducing John McVie as his “lifelong best friend.” Unlike many groups, it is very evident that they still love and respect each other very much. Even more remarkable as all of them are creating music with their ex husbands & wives etc. The well crafted background video adds a lot to the vibe of the show, and the sound of The Forum is excellent.

The Fleetwood Mac “On With The Show Tour” will be at The Forum again this Saturday night and at The Honda Center Sunday night. Two shows are also scheduled for San Diego this week. For more show details and tickets, visit www.fleetwoodmac.com.
