I was just wondering to myself when and what in the world caused Stevie to develop such an inflated head in recent years? She's always had a high opinion of herself but she was tactful about it but now she is just blatantly pompous. I was thinking that it got out of hand right after her mom died.I remember the Nicki Minaj incident and it was downhill from there. Maybe her mom kept her in check and grounded and gave her some much needed "hard advice".Stevie is a sailing ship and her mom was her anchor IMO.Your mom's words effect you at age 66 as they did at age 6.Any thoughts?

I just think she is in bliss and with all the success lately maybe she is a bit more inflated. She was on the Voice, American Idol, American Horror Story, touring with the Mac, making solo records etc. At this point in her life it is full steam ahead. Most rock stars at this stage just do the best of tours to make money. She is being discovered by a whole new set of younger fans.

Her Mom definitely kept her in check. But I think it's a bit deeper than just that. Her Mom's death has seemingly caused an entire attitude change in Stevie because it's really making her face her own mortality. In turn, Stevie's priorities seem to be shifting. She doesn't care much about what other people say about her, or if she's pleasing anyone other than herself. She's doing her thing, everyone else be damned. As much as I may not care for some of her decisions, I understand where she's coming from. Get busy living, or get busy dying.

There's people that say I've changed after my Mom died. I suppose I have, but in my case it's not because I'm facing my own mortality. For me, I feel I'm probably more guarded, and that could be off-putting to people. ( I am trying to work on that though)
Maybe Stevie feels something similar?

I too, changed after my Mom died. Honestly, I think for the better. I finally started living my life for ME, for my happiness.

Most of you know I've lost 3 loved ones in the last 7 or so years and lost my step dad about 11 years ago.I know what Stevie and others here are going through.

I drift in and out of depression all the time.Stevie's music helps me get out of it.

Mom will be gone for about 5 years this coming up February .My Dad left this world almost 2 years ago .My sister has been gone for about 7 years now.

The holidays are the tough times. As I walked through BJ's Christmas isle the other night .I start to tear up.

Yes my attitude has changed.

I've lost both of my parents over the last 8 years so I relate to what you all are saying.

But I'm not sure Stevie's mom or anybody else has ever really kept her from living her life the way she wanted to.

Honestly, this little quirkiness in Stevie's personality is one of the things I find so interesting about her. It's really nothing new as she has always had that way about being able to talk about herself in a high regard and not come across as totally offensive. Some may find it offensive but to me she does it well most of the time. However sometimes it doesn't come across as well as it should in her music. I find her use of the 3rd person tense seems to work better rather than 1st although not always the case.

Although I loathe that whole legendary status thing, her career sure is a remarkable success story which really could have gone into oblivion quite easily back in the mid-80's so I'm really very happy she's still in the public eye and really in one of the best phases of her career.

Thanks everyone for your input on this and your heart - felt responses.I too have lost both parents-my mom when I was 9 and my dad 9 years ago.I totally get the depression during the holidays(and other times)and I often feel selfish when I compare what I'm going through to what my dad had to go through losing his wife suddenly and having to raise 3 kids solo, not to mention the job lay-offs. If I had it my way I would sleep from mid November till January 2nd,but life won't allow it! If I stay busy it leaves me very little time to think about it.Maybe Stevie is doing the same thing. These days she is working non-stop.And Louie, you made me think of Stevie's "Master Class" when she said "time waits for no one".So true indeed.Thank you all for your honesty:angel:

good on her.
she's always said she doesn't give a flying F what anyone thinks about her and she does what she does for herself and I've always loved that attitude from her but I don't believe she truly practiced what she preached.

I think she's ALWAYS cared too much about what people thought about everything especially her. Look how long it took her to decide to do IYD because everyone around her was saying the music industry is dead blah blah blah. If she truly didn't care, she'd act more like Lindsey. Just do music for the sake of music and art not how many $$ you're going to rake in.

I think she haS done some reevaluating and good on her.
Like she said with 24KG ... that was her best and if other people don't like it well at least she knows it was her best. And that's all that matters.

This thread bothers me a little. I can't help but think that this thread only exists because Stevie isn't jumping on the new Fleetwood Mac album bandwagon. It just feels like people are pointing out her flaws to get her to do it. It's feels a little sneaky and backhanded to me. No offense but Stevie hasn't really changed except that she is enjoying her solo work more.

Not to mention the fact that far less criticism would be aimed towards her if she were a man. I've stayed away from a lot of these recent album-related threads, as it's hard to to stomach a lot of the knee-jerk attacks on Stevie without any real basis in fact. :sorry:

Stevie Nicks is a star, and stars are, generally, by definition, narcissists. I happen to love the way she carries herself and am impressed with how she has served her own posterity and reputation in the last five years. She achieves this through repeated tv appearances, frequent touring, and by granting print and online interviews--and she often presents herself with humorous aplomb.

But like other great popular icons and legends whose best days are be behind them, Stevie's efforts seem more focused on the preservation of cultural relevance for past work as opposed to striving to create something new. In Your Dreams was a magnificent exception--and I am so happy she was able to make that album be so artistically successful. I am, however, saddened to see that she appears to be stalling progress towards a new FM studio album.

While many Ledgies would be equally critical of Lindsey, the same behavior by one band member doesn't necessarily elicit the same response as in does by another member, at least for some people. It's kind of fun to think about who would be saying what if the situation were reversed.

And I guess I'm going to go on the record one more time. If the band gets itself off the road, they can finish the freakin' album anytime they want, and Stevie can be on it or not. I don't see how anyone is a hostage, unless it's of their own making.

Stevie's the one who told the public that she offered Christine McVie $5 million to come back, because it didn't work without her. Stevie's the one who said she needed another woman in the band, nearly unleashing Sheryl Crow on all of us. Well Christine's back now, so Stevie's commitment, or lack thereof, is going to be judged based on those comments. Right now, Stevie's lack of commitment makes her look like a hypocrite or a liar.

Not to mention the fact that far less criticism would be aimed towards her if she were a man.
Nope. Lindsey got his fair share of criticism in 1987 when he left the band hanging. This is NOT a gender issue at all, and it's actually somewhat offensive that it's even brought up.

Nobody here has any control over Stevie. It's not like we go to school with Stevie and taunt her in the lunch room.

Besides, in 40 years, it's taken a whole lot more than pointing out her flaws to get her to do a single thing.

Fans were hungry for an album from FM long before they went on the road. The tour, didn't postpone an album. It's what we got instead of an album. A consolation prize, in my book. One didn't supplant the other.

Besides as Stevie and her fans will tell you, she's the most prominent member of the band, so she's definitely going to be the focus of criticism, for reasons having nothing to do with her gender. The last time I looked, Christine was a woman too and she doesn't get the criticism Stevie gets. It has nothing to do with Stevie's sex, but it's always fun to yell misogyny.

As someone who believes Stevie is going to record with the band, I pose this question completely hypothetically: Did Stevie ever specifically mention recording when she was longing for Chris? The $5 million, Sheryl Crow....wasn't it all about being on stage and all the testosterone of the live show?

That is it. Stevie can do whatever the hell she pleases, but she needs to "sing the song that brought her". They're getting long in the tooth, and if she can't honor the WEALTH of life that she's been given, DUE TO FM, then F*CK her. As someone who believes Stevie is going to record with the band, I pose this question completely hypothetically: Did Stevie ever specifically mention recording when she was longing for Chris? The $5 million, Sheryl Crow....wasn't it all about being on stage and all the testosterone of the live show?

And eventually she managed  to reconcile herself to the live performance anyway and seemed last year, after having yet another big talk, to be having a blast.

"And Lindsey and I don’t need a buffer, because certainly Sheryl Crow and not any other woman in this world (is) going to be able to get in the middle of Lindsey and me." [2009]

But yes, it mostly seems to be in the context of live performance, IIRC. Some people seem to be using this fallacy and getting angry because of it:

1. Stevie said she wouldn't do another album with Christine
2. Christine is back
Therefore, Stevie will do an album

The first statement below, however, would need to have been stated if people are going to accuse her of lying or misleading.

1. "I'll do an album if Christine returns."
2. Christine returns

And they weren't.

After that you returned to Fleetwood Mac yet again. How do you look back on the making of Say You Will [2003]?
On Feb. 2, 2002, I went straight from the Trouble in Shangri-La tour into recording with them. It was nightmare doing that record. It really was Lindsey’s vision, and it wasn’t very much about the other three of us. And of course it was also the first record we had ever attempted to do without Christine [McVie, who left the band in the late 1990s]. Right there, the whole thing was completely insane. She is the magic mediator in that band and always was. She’s the one who made light of everything and made everybody laugh and told us all that were full of ****. She was the person who made it all work. So when she wasn’t there, that sunk the boat. I don’t think that my friend Chris ever realized how important she was. Without her, it’s a boy’s club. The lack of Christine is a big, hollow hole in my heart.

Would you be willing to attempt another record without her?
Absolutely not. Not in this lifetime. Why? We already tried, and it did not work. My thing is, somebody convince Christine to come back and do this one more time. I don’t think she’s going to change her mind, but stranger things have happened.

Other pertinent quotes.

“She [Christine] was the voice of reason.” Nicks hunted for another female foil after the tour ended. “I vowed not to do it again unless we had another person who could act as a buffer,” she says. She recruited Sheryl Crow, but the singer backed out when she realized how big the commitment would be. [2009]

"As Taylor Swift would say: 'We are never ever getting back together ever!' That's what Chris was saying… But I'd beg, borrow and scrape together $5m and give it to her in cash if she would come back. That's how much I miss her. I miss her," she adds, "like flowers need the rain." [January 2013]

While the fans might've felt the absence following her departure, someone else was missing her even more; her band mate, Stevie Nicks. "She offered me five million dollars to come back and save her from 'this wasteland', I think she referred to it as. That was about six months ago. I said, what? Only five million? That's not very much." [June 2013]

I agree wholeheartedly.....Stevie has always been about pleasing other people and not stepping on toes. In the last few years, I've seen more of an 'it's about me now!" attitude, and I say "Good for her!" It's her turn now! (Though I think she would be a fool not to do this one last album with the band! Come to think of it, she should probably do whatever they ask of her through 2017 ~ the group's 50th anniversary ~ and then it's her time/turn, plan and simple!).
I think you are seeing Stevie realize her mortality a lot more.....she always used to say she would continue doing this from her rocking chair.....as of late, she seems to be talking a lot more of a "10 year plan."

I started this thread and honestly I wasn't even thinking about the new FM album debate.I was going through some of her interviews on You Tube done recently and comparing them to the ones done 4 - 5 years ago and to me,she sounds so hardened, agitated, and somewhat "in your face" when asked even the most general questions.I know she's always been very direct, and I like that, but now she seems downright abrasive. It's like she's talking at the interviewer, not with them. Also she is talking faster than ever without really listening to or caring about the question.I almost can't stand even listening to her anymore. The first time I thought she was just in a "mood" but now it seems to be all the time(unless she's on a celebrity talk show). So I mentioned her mom's death because I was thinking maybe her mom gave her one of those "talks" from time to time to chill her out.I love listening to everyone's opinion though:angel:I'd really be sad if I started to dislike her after loving her for so many years:(

hate to say it but sounds like some old people i know, and especially women after going through menopause (sadly and unfortunately causes huge changes in some women :(... another thing that men don't need to worry about ). they never stop talking but they don't have an actual conversation with you and they don't have any interest in what you have to say, they just keep talking at you, whatever they want to say. and get annoyed if you don't listen.

They should have had to stand with their faces to the wall, to be sure not to cast their eyes on her visage.

To be fair, Mick is being paid $750 for that meet and greet, so he better be sure everyone gets autographs and pictures.

If I was ever given this instruction, I'd just stare at her anyway. I mean what is the person going to do? Get me fired for looking at them?

This reminds me of Veep when Julia's character got a security (actually Secret Service) person fired because he smiled when she made humorous comment to someone else. But I agreed with Selina Meyer on that one, because the secret service isn't supposed to be openly listening to your conversation anyway. They should remain invisible. You don't see those guards at Buckingham Palace laughing it up, do you?

This reminds me of Veep when Julia's character got a security (actually Secret Service) person fired because he smiled when she made humorous comment to someone else. But I agreed with Selina Meyer on that one, because the secret service isn't supposed to be openly listening to your conversation anyway. They should remain invisible. You don't see those guards at Buckingham Palace laughing it up, do you?

This thread bothers me a little. I can't help but think that this thread only exists because Stevie isn't jumping on the new Fleetwood Mac album bandwagon. It just feels like people are pointing out her flaws to get her to do it. It's feels a little sneaky and backhanded to me. No offense but Stevie hasn't really changed except that she is enjoying her solo work more.

Newsflash! Nothing anyone writes on the Ledge is going to have any influence over Stevie's behaviour. She doesn't use the Internet. She doesn't know what people write here and honestly, even if she did, why would she care? You really have an overinflated sense of our importance.

Stevie Nicks is a narcissist.

Who can blame her? She's surrounded by people who tell her she's amazing, that she's a goddess and that she can do no wrong.

Maybe her Mum did keep her ego in check. Maybe Barbara was the only person Stevie knew who was honest with her and told her when she did something wrong.

For Stevie's attitude to change, someone she trusts needs to take her down a peg. I am normally a fan of Stevie's music, but quite honesty, some of her more recent songs are absolutely awful: Mabel Normand, Belle Fleur, I Don't Care. Cheaper Than Free is an absolute train wreck of a song.

Christine could be that person who gives Stevie some hard advice.

This might not be the best place for this, but I didn't want to lose it. I belong to a "stagehands" group on Facebook, and everyone was supposed to tell their best stories of working with "stars", and their worst. Here's one I didn't want to not repost -

Steve A**** - "While working local security for Fleetwood Mac we were instructed to "stand with shoulder blades against wall and DO NOT make eye contact with Ms Nicks", when she exited the backstage area! This while Mic Fleetwood spent nearly 90 minutes in a tiny room doing a Meet & Greet making sure EVERYONE got autographs and pictures."

Yeah, it's not that bad, but I LOVE that their all instructed not to make eye contact with her.

I heard that story but it was about Diana Ross.

That is it. Stevie can do whatever the hell she pleases, but she needs to "sing the song that brought her". They're getting long in the tooth, and if she can't honor the WEALTH of life that she's been given, DUE TO FM, then F*CK her. And the horse that she rode in on. If I never read her name again, it would be too soon!!!

And that Lindsay? She's a tw*t, too.

One possibility is that Stevie feels that doing another record with this line-up now will ultimately tarnish the band's legacy, since it won't be a multi-platinum seller (the only one from this line-up not to do so).

If that's the case, I think that's a cop-out. Fleetwood Mac's commercial legacy was sealed a long time ago, but the story of the band's creative legacy is still being written. Ultimately, long after the band is gone, that's what people will remember. Just look at how popular "Tusk" has become with a generation that was either too young or not even born when it came out.

agree.

and their current creativity is staying locked up somewhere and we have to wait years to maybe hear some of it, when it will not be current anymore.

Honestly, for decades now, my "Stevie issues" really had more to do with her lemming like fanbase, than Stevie herself. In the past few years though, it's now a dead heat! :p

I agree that she has a lemming-like fansbase, but I actually think what's worse is the people who dislike OSOTM, Street Angel, and that whole period of her work simply because Stevie herself has now practically disowned it. That's just blindly following whatever she says.

Maybe I'm just being defensive because I really like OSOTM. I hate Bella Donna, though...

Good point about the OSOTM/Street Angel period. There were moments during that time where she was in amazing voice, (check out some of the live recordings from that period... wow), her back up on Rick Vito's Desiree, and songs like Rooms on Fire are among her career's best writing, unfortunately it's become overshadowed by some serious missteps, but to me, the era had a lot of potential if she had had Tom around at the time to give some "Hard Advice".

Druggie days aside, I dislike Street Angel simply because it makes me cringe when I hear it. Just bad music, IMO. That album is an embarrassment.

Stevie fandom evolved into pretty much to each his/her own. Heck, even back in the "classic" days she faced some pretty harsh criticism. Many critics did not "get" those early Rhiannon exorcisms, so now we as the established fan-base likewise will see things through our own lens.

Street Angel for example is seen as Stevie's dud whereas I see the album as good in some spots but suffering from lack of inspiration but by no means an embarrassment. She turned in some amazing vocals in that period and with the right producer, could've been really on fire. I'm puzzled as to what happened between Desiree and the '92 Mirror/Mirror and would've expected the same fiery performances throughout the album, but instead, very spotty, but not a complete disaster.

Again, to each their own opinion, none of us are completely right or completely wrong either.

I think BD is awesome. A classic album that stands the test of time. I LOVE it.

WH - It's pretty damned good. Mostly good songs.

RAL - Meh, I made myself learn to "like" it.

OSOTM - WTF? I listened and listened for a couple of months, and just decided that it SUCKED. That she'd LOST her gift...

Notice how(IMO) each album was about half the quality of the previous effort? OSOTM was the last Stevie solo album I ever bought. And I've been given copies of her newer ones...meh!

Maybe Jimmy Iovine could pull a decent one out of her now?

I have never really understood why Street Angel was so universally panned by music critics and fans alike. I know that Stevie had to rely on other people to help her write enough songs. Still, Docklands is a gorgeous song, even though Stevie didn't write it! It was just made for her...a very sexy song.

Blue Denim...another great song.

The title track is not bad at all either. I particularly enjoyed listening to Stevie explain on radio how she wrote this song about how she will never know what it's like to live on the streets. She wanted to put herself in the shoes of a homeless girl, walk around in them for a while and see what it felt like. Just goes to show what an empathetic and caring a person she is that she can write a story like Street Angel.

Let's talk vocal quality. On Street Angel, it is, let's be frank, way better than the vocals on any solo album she has released since! When she recorded the vocals for Street Angel, Stevie was most definitely at that point just before her singing ability plateaued. Stevie's vocals on The Dance are roughly equal in quality to those on the Street Angel album.

Since 2001 she has only fleetingly delivered the powerhouse vocals that first made her famous. She seems too afraid of ever attempting to sing Dreams live in its original key, which is a shame.

I agree 100% Street Angel is a great album. Her vocals are STRONG and the album rocks big time. Its rock n roll with a bit of country. Just because an album does not sell does not mean it is a bad album. I think that is what Stevie thinks too.

I agree. Street Angel is not the dud it's made out to be and my personal belief is that the hate for the album, including Stevie herself has more to do with how "she" was during the time, her appearance, state of mind etc than the actual performances. Granted it could have been even better with a more competent producer but there is absolutely nothing wrong with her vocals on the album, (save for the forgotten chimpanzee) they're rich in tone and texture, she's in an overall clear voice, and her live performances during the period are even better.

It's true that Nicks has said that great albums don't necessarily sell well, particularly today. She does, however, consider Street Angel to be her only "bad" album (she's made several comments about this), but, be that as it may its still subjective: If you love it, you love it.
