I thought I'd start a new thread so we know where to put everything regarding '24 Karat Gold' on the charts. Sales will also be mentioned.

To kick things off, '24 Karat Gold ~ Songs from the Vault' debuts at #5 on the Billboard vinyl albums chart. Not sure if it's on the main Billboard 200 yet based on this and I also don't know about sales.

For sure! The high-profile buzz surrounding Christine's return to Fleetwood Mac and their tour has served as collateral promotion and interest for Stevie's album.

What initially seemed like bad timing between Christine's rejoining the band and Stevie's solo plans has actually become very beneficial to her.

Well, the first proper chart news is in.

'24 Karat Gold - Songs from the Vault' debuts at #40 on the NZ albums chart (5 positions down on 'In Your Dreams') and #16 in Australia (8 positions higher than 'In Your Dreams').

I think that's great news! I thought it might get a bit higher than that in New Zealand but I didn't think it'd reach as high as #16 in Australia!

That means it's Stevie's first top 20 album in Australia in 25 years! That's fantastic news!

I'll report on sales if they become available. :)

Does anyone know if buying the bundles count as multiple units sold? For example, the digital + deluxe disc bundle...does that count as two units toward sales, in the way that a box-set or double-CD would?

Earlier on today Stevie was at #5 on HDD's album sales building chart. At 31.77%, the albums sales were 7,386.

HDD has just updated and at 54.98%, the album is at #8 on sales of 10,176. However, Stevie is very close at this stage behind #7 to #4 as they are all VERY close together in sales.

I really hope she climbs the chart and ultimately stays within the top 10. Hopefully 'The Voice' can give her a last minute bump in sales. :)

So, now the album has nearly finished its first week on the chart, how do we think it'll do in its second week?

Just to remind everybody, the album started last week at #7 with sales of 33,000. I think it'll be around #25 with sales of around 13,000.

The album is still within the Amazon top 20 chart and I'm sure physical CD sales are doing quite well, so what do you guys think? :)

It seems to be selling about half of what IYD did, so yeah I'd say 100K for US sales at this point, unless it has more legs than IYD which is *might* if Reprise can get "Blue Water" in heavy rotation as a single to country music stations.

I think artists are making money in newer ways these days besides album sales and touring though. Clearly Nicks makes a ton of money every time Mac tours. But the video for "Lady" went viral on YouTube, and there's ad revenue from that, and it has over 500,000 views now. Similarly I wonder if the lyrics videos hosted by various sites split ad revenues with Reprise during those runs?

I do think though that Nicks' stint on The Voice ought to include a shout-out or two about the new album, and I don't know about how band politics affects this but they should be selling the CD at the t-shirt stand during each "On With The Show" stop. I can imagine that they don't, though, because it would be money going into Stevie's coffers alone versus the t-shirt/etc. sales which the band all get.

Fleetwood Mac's tour should be about Fleetwood Mac and Christine's return. I don't think anyone of them would be thrilled with the idea about piggy backing promotion for her solo album, with which none of them had any association, on their tour.

Dancing with the Stars features a lot of has-been stars. Stevie is not a has-been. And she's not that desperate. Thankfully her star has not fallen so low. She would never subject herself to that; and she would likely be voted off early anyway.

She wouldn't have to dance on Dancing with the Stars. Heaven forbid. She could just sing (and the dancers would dance to her music) and sit in as a guest judge or something. Not that I think she should, mind you, but that's something that a lot of the singers do.

The album that actually deserves her heavy promotion doesn't get any.

But you know what? It doesn't matter. It really doesn't. It doesn't matter how high it charted, what color of metal is used to describe it's sales status, how many reviews are on MetaCritic, or how many people love If You Were My Love as much as you love it. All that matters is that the album was recorded, was released, and is loved by many, many of her fans. That's who these songs were recorded for. I agree with you - it's a hit record, and should get more attention, but what is, is.

:)

Stevie's days of magazine covers, top 10 singles, and platinum sales are over. People are consuming media in other ways that don't require them to buy. Yet, she's still a household name for many. She's still got friends in high places willing to let her in. That's why she's on American Idol, and The Voice. She's a legend, loved by many in the mainstream celebrity culture, and seems to never stop picking up fans from the current generation of youth. That's why she's on American Horror Story and a guest on all the big talk shows like Ellen and Oprah and featured on Glee and performing on the Today Show and with Lady Antebellum and being interviewed by Haim. She trends on various media platforms a few times a year. Plus, Fleetwood Mac! Dozens are the other legends of music, who do nothing, record nothing, tour nothing. Or if they do, no one notices.

Stevie is still giving us her all, at the best pace she can, working hard to be respected and relevant, and to give fans what they want, and people actually do notice! I think this album has been a success so far, and it's not really over - she could tour behind it still, and when she hits the competition phase of The Voice, she could get enough boost in sales to drive her to the top ten again, but even if that doesn't happen, so what?

Just play the record, twirl around with a beer in your hand, and enjoy the music. To heck with what everybody else thinks or says.

These are really good points. I think the biggest fear with albums not selling that well is that it might make her stop recording....and it actually did, when her record company told her after TISL "not to bother" with doing another solo album. But it seems like now she knows to expect 100,000 - 300,000 in sales and wants to make albums anyway.

I agree wholeheartedly with both KarmaContestant and Tabruns!

And as some of you have pointed out recently, Stevie seems to be thinking of her legacy these days (and the songs that she leaves behind) rather than having a "hit record".

So while I think that sales would figure into some artists giving up, it just doesn't seem like that big a deal to her. Look at "In Your Dreams" ~ three and a half years later and it's still not Gold status and was never a runaway success...yet she was PROUD of it and recorded a new record. She stopped listening to the people who told her not to bother recording again. She's making music for herself, hence the quote "I'm not making a hit record. I'm making a great record."

F*ck sales! F*ck chart positions! WE HAVE THE MUSIC and that's what is truly important. I have no doubt she will at least put out two more solo records within the next 6 years then start focusing on other things. She's earned it. She deserves it.

She's PROUD of "24 Karat Gold"!!! And as she mentioned in one of the commentary videos that "these songs are not even the best...but they are the best for NOW. Cause there's many more songs. TONS of songs. So this is just the BEST 16 songs for 2014!" If that's not a HUGE hint that more music is on the way...and SOON, then I don't know what is?

Bad news I'm afraid. Hits Daily Double has had an album sales update and '24 Karat Gold' is currently at #47. That's a colossal drop from its debut.

I know that HDD counts album sales from different sources as they update so there is every chance that the album could increase from this number.

There will likely be another update in a few hours so I'll keep everyone updated. I hope it rises from this position though otherwise the album won't last very long at all. :distress:

So, now the album has nearly finished its first week on the chart, how do we think it'll do in its second week?

Just to remind everybody, the album started last week at #7 with sales of 33,000. I think it'll be around #25 with sales of around 13,000.

The album is still within the Amazon top 20 chart and I'm sure physical CD sales are doing quite well, so what do you guys think? :)

Great news everybody! Somehow, the album has climbed dramatically since HDD's last update and the final numbers has '24 Karat Gold' at #24 with sales of approximately 12,000. Now, I think you can gather from the quote above that my prediction was pretty accurate!
Anyway, I think that is a VERY respectable second week for an album from an artist of her age and there is also the chance that it could be even higher on the Billboard 200 as last week there was a major difference between HDD and SoundScan.

I have a feeling that the first update from HDD takes into account digital sales as I know that '24 Karat Gold' is no longer selling many digital copies so that is my theory anyway.

So fantastic news, and I think we should all be very pleased with this. Hopefully the album will see a few more weeks on the charts after all! :)

Nicks is currently on the road with Fleetwood Mac's reunion tour, but she still had time to finish this set of solo tracks. It moved 33,000 copies in Week One.

I feel it's useless to worry and be so obsessive about charts or sales numbers. Her record is a celebrated success artistically, critically and otherwise. Understandably, as hard core fans we are more emotionally invested in her success; we want to see the album topping the charts for months and selling millions.

It's in our best interests to lower our expectations. Stevie is still a viable artist, still giving us reasons to follow her. She is forever a cultural icon who will be remembered long after many of the currently popular artists fall into relative obscurity.

Speaking of so called country Jason Aldean is not on my radar. He is overrated to the max.I'm not a fan.

I'm so glad that Stevie has push her way up to the top.

I'm glad to see Barbra Streisand is still strong along with my parents favorite
Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga.I dont thing my late parents will enjoy Lady Gaga though.

I think Barbra's old friend Niel Diamond is coming out with a new album soon of has already.

Oh yes, without a doubt Nicks is in a league of her own. Here she is in her mid-60s still hitting the Top 10 with studio album releases, 35 years into a solo career. And she's a pop culture fixture. Her legacy is set.

In fact, if one was able to put the probable politics aside, I think there's plenty of evidence to support her being inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as a solo act.

According to SoundScan figures, Stevie's album has sold 43,246 copies as of its second week on the charts.

In its two weeks on sale it sold 42,240 copies which means that 1,006 copies of the vinyl were bought the week previous which is why it debuted at #5 on the vinyl albums chart.

Just thought I'd let you guys know! :)

Hits Daily Double puts 24 Karat Gold at number 47 this week with about 5,800 copies sold.

Just as a comparison to Stevie's debut, Annie Lennox had first-week sales of about 28,000 copies of her new album, and Aretha Franklin sold about 23,000 copies of her new album in its first week.

The music industry is in the toilet and all sales are way, way down, yet Stevie continues to outsell her peers. Something to be proud of.

It is something to be proud of. I also think Annie did a lot of TV promotion for the album unlike Stevie. :) HDD predicted the album would be at #24 last week with sales of over 11,000 when SoundScan put it at #30 with sales of less than 10,000.

I wonder how SoundScan will differ this week?

I agree, and its where her age is working against her, even though for a legacy artist she's on a much higher level than nearly any other legacy artist there is. But that (her age) is likely why radio isn't playing any of the 24KG singles.....even though EW had "Lady" on their Must List.

Someone did mention hearing "Belle Fleur" played on their local radio station and described as "the new single from Stevie Nicks" by the DJ but that's the only thing I've heard of that. I still have hopes that Warner Bros tries to push "Blue Water" as a country single.

I've heard 24 Karat Gold played on the Loft, on Sirius XM, several times. Another channel, Deep Tracks (where Jim Ladd has a radio show) plays Lola My Love, Frozen Love, and Stephanie sometimes. I wish Classic Vinyl and The Bridge would play some songs though. The Dealer would fit perfectly with the Alan Parsons Project and Steely Dan. ;)

Just a quick update on Stevie on the charts:

'24 Karat Gold' drops to #153 on the UK albums chart from #97 last week which is to be expected really.

The album does however drop quite unexpectedly on the Billboard 200, falling a whopping 53 places from #53 last week to #106 this week. I knew it was inevitable that the album would drop but I certainly didn't think it would be out of the top 100 after only 3 weeks.

The album sold 3,902 copies to achieve that position and its total US sales now stand at 53,094.

The album has however received quite a lot of attention in the week since those numbers were counted as Stevie's appearance on the 'Today Show' and 'Jimmy Fallon' created a lot more interest in the album. It did reach as high as #70 on the iTunes main album chart on Wednesday from where it was previously nowhere, so expect the album to jump quite a bit on the Bilboard 200 in the week to come. :)

I agree with you that there a lot of really great songs on this album. Just because a record loses steam and isn't selling anymore doesn't mean it will "go down". Consider "Landslide", which is one of FM's most well known tracks, not to mention one of its' most beloved. Was never relaesed as a asingle or even played that much on the radio. It took years for it to garner the acclaim it did. There's always hope for a song, a really good song, to reach it's potential audience.

I don't have access to sales or chart numbers yet, but I predict that 24 Karat Gold will rise slightly on the Billboard 200 this week as sales were boosted from the Today Show and Jimmy Fallon.

Looking on Hits Daily Double's final figures, it isn't in their top 50 but I wasn't expecting such a leap anyway.

I think around #70 or so would be ok. This album will only be on the charts another 2/3 weeks and unfortunately I think that'll be it. It's a shame because I think it's a fantastic album that isn't getting the attention or sales it deserves.

Bette Midler's new album looks set to debut within the top 5 this week on sales around that of Stevie's first week and Annie Lennox's album is marginally outselling 24 Karat Gold but by literally a couple of thousand or so. From what I've heard though, she's done a lot of promotion in the US whereas Stevie only did two significant appearances.

Also, I don't live in the US so I don't know if this is accurate, but are sales going up already because of Christmas? I didn't think it would be happening at the start of November.

With any luck, Stevie's album will get a nice chunk of Christmas sales. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though!

I've finally got my hands on some SoundScan figures and 24 Karat Gold ~ Songs from the Vault lands at #83 this week on the Billboard 200 with sales of 5,187. This is a 33% increase in sales from last week and is due to the promotion it received last week.

The albums total US sales now stand at 58,281.

I suspect the album has sold another 20k or so worldwide with nearly 10k coming from the UK.

I'll let you know the exact sales next week if I get hold of the SoundScan figures. I suspect the album will take a beating on Thursdays chart and will probably be around #150 or so.

Well at least the album saw another week within the top 100!

She's sold 58k in the US and 9k in the UK so I suspect the album is not far off 80k worldwide.

The album does need to stay on the Billboard 200 for a while longer for the album to reach 100k as the album has disappeared off every other chart, so that's where the only new sales are coming from.

Personally I think the album will drop considerably on Thursday to around #150 or so and then it'll cling on the week after and I think that'll be it.

I hope my prediction is wrong and the Christmas buyers will snap it up but I think that may just be a bit optimistic!

I gotta say that this just seems so out of whack with the numbers that On With the Show is generating. I get that all but the most fanatic are there to hear Rumours in its entirety but still, no interest in hearing what else Stevie has up her sleeve, which challenges what most perceive as a pretty sparse catalogue. A record like this should be at 250 K minimum by now. Stevie's right after all, the music industry really has changed.

Anything is possible but remember Landslide was on an album that sold 5,000,000 copies.

Landslide also didn't have the power of the internet or social media to promote it. Tit for tat. It's more about the quality of the music, timing, and power tracking it to an audience. Landslide didn't garner its' status until the hugely popular Dixie Chicks covered the song and it also got exposure on the second coming of FM via The Dance Reunion on MTV. Just saying, you never know when or how one of these tracks from 24 Karat Gold might take off, regardless of the sales of today. Most importantly it's music that's out there for the world to hear, quietly or loudly. It's not about sales, it's about art.
I would think and hope Stevie has realized this now, especially at this point in her life.

Unfortunately, this time I was wrong. The album has dropped off the Billboard 200 completely this week after just 6 weeks on the chart.

It is however at #166 on the Current Albums chart but it is still a giant drop from last week where it was at #117 on that chart.

Due to the fact that it no longer resides on the Billboard 200 I don't have any sales figures. I predict something around 2,000 but that's just a guess.

People's hopes of triple figure sales now look extremely unlikely unless the album gets another boost from somewhere. Ah well.

I bet she has. It couldn't have cost too much to make. I think an artist like Stevie probably makes at least $2 for each copy sold, so that's $160K right there. Songwriting royalties would make it more.

Exactly what kind of marketing would have boosted sales of the album? Even if she toured for this album, the set list would likely only feature a tiny fraction of the album. Not sure that would have any effect on the charts or sales. A lot of big artists aren't fairing well in the market. I'm aware that sales of U2's excellent new album has been a disappointment. ( I hope Bono recovers from the serious injuries he sustained in a horrible bike collision in New York, where the band was to have a week long residency on the Tonight Show. Can you imaging how disappointing and worrisome that must be to their fans?)

People who wanted this album found it. She wasn't going to gain new fans with it. On the contrary, inexplicably she lost self-professed " fans"who claim to love for her, but easily and subjectively rejected her and the album because it didn't fit the antiquated concept of who they expect her to be. It's understandable for a follower to not understand or particularly like a certain phase or creative turn an artist may take in their long career. But it's stubbornly capricious to immediately dismiss an artist's viability just because a body of work doesn't fit their concept.

Some fickle fans seem to have no grasp of context and time. The common misconception is that if these songs were of any value , they would have already been on previous albums. This just reveals ignorance of the creative process. Artists shelve their work for many different reasons that have nothing to do with inferiority.

Who has the benefit of youthful immortality? Despite the bests efforts, some of our capabilities will wane as time goes by. You solider on, making adjustments and do the best you can. That's life. Stevie has lost a lot of her higher range, but she adjusts and makes up for it with power and control. I'm a big fan of Joni Mitchell, an unabashed heavy smoker. Her voice has drastically changed. Yet that doesn't stop me from being a fan, even though her voice, on recent releases, has lost all the range she use to have in her heyday.

I could have easily rejected Lindsey's solo work; I tried to accept and like his first album when it came out, especially in stark comparison to Stevie's first album, instantly approachable and appealing, released around the same time. But I stuck with him. All these years later, I've come to really enjoy appreciate Law and Order, having the benefit of context and time. I surmise that 24 Karat Gold, in time, will be reconsidered and appreciated by some of those who are now disparaging it.

Im sure a large number of F/M or Stevie's concert goers, & casual fans wouldn't even know she has a new album out, if not into social media or fan sites .. or if they missed last months promotional segments on TV.. the majority would have no clue.

Wishful thinking here, it would of be great if F/M allowed Stevie to somehow market the album while on tour with them, via the merch store for example  unfortunately the big machine organization is just too political for that to happen.. Ducking for cover :D

Too bad during the pre-show music playing at Mac concerts they don't run commercials for Stevie and Lindsey's latest albums on their big video screens. Imagine doing that and offering the cds for sale in the lobby....especially if the ads played song selections from the albums.

That would a great Idea.

As I mention in the Stevie's new website "StevieNicksOfficial" thread .

Quote Macfanforever.

I could picture Stevie bellowing out at the current FM concerts"Please go out and buy my new album 24K". It would be not fair with the rest of the band.but if Mick mentions it which It would be better coming out of his mouth.probably at the right time when he introduce her during the intros.

The album has re-entered the Top Current Albums chart at #157 after disappearing from it completely last week. It probably sold around 2,000 copies or maybe more seeing as it's the Christmas period.

I'm just dying for this album to stay around but I'm afraid it's already died. Never mind!

The album has moved up slightly this week on the Top Current Albums chart to #151 from #157 last week. The album has also moved up to #31 on the Top Rock Albums chart from #34 last week.

It's nice to see that the album is getting a slight bump in sales over the Christmas period. I would expect the albums US sales to be around 70k now.

You can add another sale to her because I just picked up vinyl from FYE store today.

Now 2 copies of the vinyl under my belt.

I would think the album has probably sold around 85k in the US by now. I think although the album fell off the charts fairly quickly, it still sells respectably afterwards.

I would say after 5 months of the last guess, 24KG has sold around 85k in the US and around 120k worldwide. Still far off IYD both in the US and worldwide. The fact that IYD has sold around 210,000 copies in the US alone is quite impressive to me. If only Stevie thought the same!

But I believe Stevie DID think the same! A lot of her quotes on this point have been taken out of context. She's very proud of how IYD sold, and has spoken a lot about how she worked hard for every sale. Her frustration has centered more generally on the present nature of the music industry, piracy, the lack of real promotion from labels, and how records generally don't sell like they used to. Sure, she's expressed frustration that IYD didn't sell better, but also has acknowledged that the sales reflect a larger trend in the industry.

By my estimates, Stevie has sold worldwide between 400 and 500K albums IYD and 24KG total. Not bad. Over 300K IYD, and 120K 24KG.

I agree. She was clearly proud of how hard she worked to move 300,000 units. She was just making the point that before the Internet an album like IYD would have easily gone platinum and without so much pushing.

Actually, if I weren't as big of a fan as I am of her I'd probably
say much worse.

There hasn't been much I've liked from her since The Dance.
I did like the SoundStage performance. But other than that,
I've been very disappointed in her solo albums since Street Angel.

If it were just me being tired of her I don't think I'd still enjoy
Wild Heart and Bella Donna so much. I even like Rock A Little
and The Other Side Of The Mirror, though I hate the way they
recorded her voice on those two albums.

Foolishly I still wait for that last "good" album. One where she
actually writes new songs and sings them.

Well considering the fact that 24k is way better than Rock A Little and The Other Side, your problem seems to be that the songs aren't new. 24 k is on par with The Wild Heart and Bella Donna. It s just a much longer album.

I don't think you would like any thing she did since IYD was almost completely new. 24k was definitely better than that. You are just out of luck.

It is pretty much a year since we first heard The Dealer in anticipation of the release of 24 Karat Gold, followed by Lady later in August. In May we were estimating sales of 120 thousand worldwide. I wonder if a few more thousand have added to that in the months since.

James89

Just thought I'd mention that in my local HMV store, which is in the UK, 24 Karat Gold was positioned right at the front of the store amongst albums that are in the charts!

Seeing the album near others such as Swift's 1989 and Adele's 25 was quite amazing as it didn't sell that many copies here when it was released over a year ago and now it's sitting with that lot!

I'm not sure whether they've made a mistake putting it there but it may see a dramatic and unexpected increase in Christmas sales locally because of it!

Just thought I'd share this weird and wonderful thing with you as I was really quite surprised. And Merry Christmas everyone! :)

(not sure why your quote didn't copy)

Right on!

I was never aware that songs have expiration dates. Just because it was a work in progress that lingered in relative obscurity for decades, forgotten, unfinished, abandoned, unreleased... it bares no judgment to its validity.

Any time I read vapid and disparaging quips like "there is a reason it was left in the vault " intimating that anything unused or old isn't worth releasing, it drives me crazy. These sentiments come from those who clearly have no artistic ability, or no understanding of how the creative process works.

I suspect Stevie has a lot of newer writings and potential songs that have not leaked out to social media, maybe masterpieces in waiting, written several years ago or twenty years ago. The genesis of a song is of no matter -- age doesn't determine potential.

Stevie evokes an alluring air of mystery and imagery by calling what may very well be just a file cabinet a vault (a skill of which she is very adept). Vaults are commonly used to safely secure precious objects and items of value, not a dank space used as a dumping ground for discards.

See, I ADORED In Your Dreams. I'm obsessed with the title track and "Secret Love" but I really can't find anything on 24 Karat Gold that I like on that kind of level. The only thing that came close for me was that performance of "Lady" on Jimmy Fallon.

the problem for me with 24k is that too many of the songs drone on waaayyy too long. I know for some this is appealing, but to me, honestly, many of her songs could be cut easily by at least a minute. Take Lady....(please! :sorry:) but really- that could be cut by about a minute and a half. I like IYD more, but again, a number of the songs could be made shorter and should be. Wide Sargasso Sea is one of my faves on there but it really is hurt by too many repetitions of the chorus at the end. I blame Dave Stewart. He just isn't willing to be a proper editor for her work and she desperately needs one. 24k is a self-indulgent work. If you're going to finally release the songs, do something more interesting with them or just remaster the demos and put those out (I know, I know, can't really do that when she recorded them on little cassette recorders). 24k had so much promise and just didn't deliver. :sorry:

Agree about Dave Stewart. I'm not sure he's an amazing producer, songwriter, or musician. :sorry: He can get the job done, but I struggle to see him do anything truly original with Stevie's work. It actually seems that Stevie will dig her feet in when she feels she has a truly great creative idea but I don't think he's on her level enough to match her like her past producers or bandmates in FM.

I would like to hear her a little less safe with her vocals. The lyrics IMHO are fine, but if she keeps Dave as producer, I think she should sing like she means it, rather than just recite verses loudly. I think the closest we've gotten to that recently was the improv on I Don't Care. I wish her sound was a little less crisp and clean these days.

Such finely tuned insights! An earthy sounding Stevie, with a little less polish is good thing. Perhaps because of how quickly they banged out the songs for 24 Karat Gold, I think her voice does sound a tad more gritty on some songs.

That is not a smart criticism. She is more repetitive on IYDs then 24k. Annabelle Lee, Italian Summer, Moonlight, My Heart and Ghosts go on forever. The songs are wayyyy to long. Sure Lady is too repetitive without a good reason, but the other song lengths make sense. She lets the music come through and add to the track.

I think you missed the point of my post. I think *both* albums have too many songs that are too long. I like IYD better, but in both cases Dave S. didn't do a good job of keeping her on track and doing what was best for the song (usually trimming them down some).

I agree with Ricoh, some of Lindsey's old school tightening up would benefit both albums immensely.

Honestly I don't think it helps matters any that Stevie is so dead set (usually) against people re-arranging her music. She goes on & on about this but never really acknowledges how much better the final product is. I agree-many songs on IYD are too long (the whole album needs to be pared down) but to these ears nothing drones on or is as monotonous as Lady!

Italian Summer could have been so much more. It's a great idea and when you see her handwritten original first idea lyrics they are fantastic. Somewhere along the line someone made the decision to just keep repeating the same thing over and over and adding that absolutely dreadful "Hey! It's so soulful...." bit.

But so could Starshine. It's a fun song, but it's the same verse/chorus three times in a row. She couldn't change up a word here and there in each verse??

Too many examples to count.

That's hilarious. The "hey" and the "so soulful" are bad in their own right. Put them together ... But Dave co-wrote Cheaper Than Free with her, so I don't look to him for help with things like this.

I would say that my biggest problems are CTF and the monotonous Annabelle Lee ending. With 24K, I don't have major gripes. I don't think Carousel fits, but there's nothing really wrong with the song on its own. I don't think it's right for Stevie.

Regarding endings, this may be an industry epidemic. I like 60% of Adele's 25 very much, but I do think she also has a problem repeating the chorus. I think often it would be more effective to change a line at the end, to give the end of the song a deeper meaning than the verses had. Or just let it fade out ... adlibbing a close that meanders to a whisper. I think Stevie has been very successful with the fade in the past and I wished Adele had picked that up, sometimes.

or having multiple takes with multiple lines that weave over and around each other-- the classic Stevie examples of this are Sara, Gold Dust Woman, Silver Springs. Even on the studio version of Rhiannon she adds the "dreams unwind, love's a state of mind" after you think all the singing is done and it's not whispered really but rather quiet and catches you a bit by surprise.

That kind of thing was sort of signature for her and it seems to have been lost by most of her recent producers. Jimmy seemed to get it when you watch the video of them recording Blue Lamp and he's coaching her on those extra vocal punctuations at the end, though on most of Bella Donna he doesn't produce the songs with that effect. Maybe it was thought to be too reminiscent of her FM work? But I miss it. She does GREAT vamping at the end of songs and I'd love to see her bring it back.

I agree with a lot of what has been said - with the exception of Annabel Lee. The end strategically adds a subtle new layer each time the chorus or lyric is repeated eventually transporting me to that other worldly Stevie dimension I rarely ever get in anyone else's music. Someone once said anyone who believes Annabel Lee drags on isn't hearing the builds and I emphatically agree. That song is brilliant and the length allows me the perfect experience with it.
