View Full Version : How Christine has re-energized the band...

I am viewing a lot of the clips from the previous two shows, and all I can think is, "is this the same band from last year?"

Christine's presence has completely changed the band dynamic...for the better. Some of the HD Youtube clips really present how tight the band sound and just look at their faces. All of the band members just seem so happy to be doing what they are doing. It really does make you think, how tough was it without Christine in the mix? Don't get me wrong, the previous two tours were full of great moments. But with Christine back, it's as if the band has taken themselves to a new level.

And Christine, herself, seems beyond happy to be there which is such a plus. And it is clear that from the audience reaction, she is feeling the love from the fans as well.

With Christine back, it does make me very excited to think of what is to come from the band. Clearly, this is a game changer. I see the next couple of years being a large swan song for the band...going out on top with the five musicians who have made such an impact on popular music today.

I completely agree. Like I said in another thread, it's like the band has gone from auto pilot to fighter pilot. :D For the first time since 1982, I'm also hearing Fleetwood Mac... not Fleetwood Mac & it's Broadway ensemble of backing musicians. I dearly hope Richard Dashut is wrong, and this isn't the final tour from the band. Because they are finally back to what the great majority of us have wanted for so very long.

Yes, I am sure the finances did play a role in Christine wanting to come back. The band has more relevance today than it has since the 70s, and I am sure that Christine wanted a piece of the financial upswing the band has been having.

However, unless Ms. McVie was in a poor economic situation (which I don't believe to have been the case), I can't see why she would only do a tour for the money. She seems truly happy to be part of a band again and embracing her artistry. I also can't see how she would be going into a studio with Lindsey and working towards an album...if money was all that it was about, then surely they would just continue to tour. The video clips posted from the two shows clearly present Christine, and the band, loving the camaraderie and musicianship on stage.

At the end of the day, money is important. But I doubt that was the only determining factor in this full band reunion.

Absolutely. It is also interesting to see how much of a 'leader' Christine is on stage. Her keeping the time, counting in, and directing the musicians through her impeccable sense of rhythm, timing, etc. is very evident.

I think the other musicians on stage do add some element, and there are some songs (i.e. Go Your Own Way) that clearly need a second guitarist. I do agree though that it feels more like they are playing as the band that they used to be.

I believe he is absolutely wrong. This band is a band that has always laid the cold, hard truth out there in some fashion. If this was going to be the final tour, I think it would have been dubbed "End of the Road" or "End of the Show" or "The Final Dance" or some such nonsense.

And Lindsey definitely wouldn't go on spouting about the line-up yielding much fruit in the coming future. I think the end is near within' the coming decade, but not this tour. You can see it in the videos on their faces. They know the magic is back. Even Stevie can tell. They all seem like they are having an incredible time, for once. I don't think they will be ready to get off the crazy Mac train at the end of this tour.

Well, money is the motivator for everything, isn't it? However, I think for Christine, & oh course I can't speak for her, it was more than just the money. This seemed to take place after we found out John was sick. It gets a person thinking; I'm not going to be around forever. I've got to get over my fears. Life if short. So she decided to not let life pass her by & get over her fear of flying & of being on the stage. I'm personally glad that she's back. She enhances the band, the sound, the chemistry, the dynamic. The Mac is back!

Yes, I agree. I am sure the money is a wonderful plus, and is most likely some of the reason as to why she rejoined.

However, I also think that your comments are spot on. It seems that John's sickness has played a part in her decision. Also, she could have just realized that she has an opportunity that most people do not - to be a part of a large-scale rock band. It's a life that most of us will never know, and for her to not take the opportunity to spread her love of music and artistry alongside her band mates ever again probably seemed to be a waste.

Whatever the reason, and we may never know, it's a wonderful thing. Her contributions were lacking and after only two shows it is clear that the Mac needs her.

Money is only one factor. Fleetwood Mac has an artistic soul besides being a business. I hope that the beyond tour, they can complete the album. Maybe release a DVD/CD of the tour. It's hard to except they will be prolifically active beyond that.

It would nice if they revisited their back catalog and re-release Mirage and Tango with bonus material like they did with Rumours and Tusk. A new big box set with tons of rarities would be great, along with a series of live albums from various periods in their career, along with an upgraded, complete show DVD version of their filmed Mirage concert.

Also, their transitional period, Kiln House to Heroes Are Hard to Find, should be honored in some way.

Money is always a factor in every decision we make. I don't think Christine has as much to do with the setlist as the rest of the band and the promoters.

She probably has a weak vote at this point about what's what. She lost her power when she left.

ON the note that she has energized the band: I love hearing this. I can't wait to see a show. And while I'm so disappointed in the setlist. I am trying to look at it like it's visiting an old friend. A very f''''ing expensive old friend. I'm just going to have fun and see them at the Forum. (all three shows)

I think Christine's presence has re-united the great musical relationship that she has with Lindsey. It's always been there since World Turning, and now they have a chance to create something new from their awesome bond and muse. These two are incredible together on that level.

Michele, when you went to see them in London last year, you mentioned that LB was hesitating and didn't run over there like he used to. I think we are seeing more of that now and he trusts her again. I never realized just how much of a hole she left. But now that it's back you can see it. It's really amazing.

Finally, let's hope they do something artistic and tour a new album. The three of these writers together can do amazing things.

I agree with your take. We all love money, but Christine is 70 and has no kids. She seems to be living comfortably. I can't imagine any reason why she would be trying to stockpile the cash right now. The most extravagant thing we've heard about her is Dennis Wilson spending her money for that pool, not her spending it. We've no reason to think she's got to replenish the coffers.

Stevie has lots of people on her payroll. The guys all have kids and I'm sure they want to secure their futures. But Christine? I mean, I'm sure she loves her nieces and nephews, but why leave millions to them? I just don't see money as her main motivator.

It was Dennis who was the extravagant one. I know nothing about a pool. But for Valentines Day he surprised Christine by having a huge chunk of her yard cut out in the shape of a heart and filled with flowers, and the cost of it was billed to her! So classy, Dennis! I remember seeing the story and picture featured in a magazine, likely Rolling Stone. I have the clip somewhere. Years later Christine recalls that she was not particularly happy to come home to see her yard all dug up. That was her most tumultuous relationship. Dennis was a sad mess.

Aren't all of Christine's Tusk and Mirage songs about Dennis and her relationship with him?

If they don't ever play Hold Me live, I would at least like to know why. That was one of their biggest hits back in the day.

Totally agree with you - Christine was quoted as being worth over £25 million ($40 million) even before The Dance was released and with royalties still totting up she must be very comfortable financially to say the least. With no kids and seemingly no entourage like Stevie I think she's the least likely of the five to need the money. It's a factor yes, but not the be all and end all.

Am so, so happy to see how well she's being received, she has slotted back into the band seamlessly. She looks and sounds wonderful too. It's a dream come true for us all:thumbsup:

I agree about Hold Me. I think they need another song like Little Lies with all three band members singing together--Hold Me and Think About Me stand out to me. Stevie and Lindsey don't really have those kinda of songs in their arsenal. Maybe if you talk to Mick he'll have an explanation. Or maybe it'll just happen?

Richard Dashut said he doesn't think they will tour again at this level-- I gather he means big world tour-- he says because age and etc will take its toll. Who knows.

Might be that's why they decide to tour before doing another studio album..? Tour while everyone's health is still good, their voices aren't totally shot and whatever else… then do an album which is easier for old farts than the strain of touring…

But no one will know til the time comes whether they will actually tour again or not. If we figure an album not before late 2015 or, as it's seeming now, 2016, will they really want to tour in 2016? Maybe. Fingers crossed everyone's still in good shape in 2 or 3 years.

She still makes sh*tloads from Rumours. (It is #11 in the UK album chart this week, it's the cash cow that keeps on giving;)).

She also made a lot of money from Everywhere which was re-released last year for an advert, that also charted in the UK top 20 singles chart.

I don't see Stevie doing FM 4 or 5 years in a row...After the 2015 tour I think she takes 2 or 3 years off from FM then one last big FM tour...FM will continue to tour in later years but on a smaller scale.

I was listening to the bootlegs from the Chicago show. I love to hear Chris's deep background vocals on the Chain. Gosh she makes Fleetwood Mac. She is more influential than any other member IMHO.

But boy has she energized Stevie. I have not seen Stevie dance through an entire set since her cocaine days. Even in 1987 and 1990 Stevie was never on stage for You Make Loving Fun and Over My Head. She left it to her background singers to back Chris. I love how Stevie is doing background vocal on Little Lies (close your close your close your eyes).

Welcome back Fleetwood Mac!

Hold Me is a fairly sparse song, production wise and I suspect they don't do it because they feel it would sound empty and thin in an arena. I would love to see the band do an acoustic portion of the set...like they did with SYLM on The Dance tour. Lose the mini Mac and play a handful of songs acoustically. Who knows, maybe they're already doing this? Dunno. I'm not watching any of the videos until I see them live. But, I think an acoustic rendition of Hold Me would be utterly amazing. Here are my choices for an acoustic set:

Hold Me
Walk a Thin Line
Honey Hi
Save Me a Place
Gypsy

bethelblues
10-04-2014, 08:32 AM
Honey Hi is such a catchy little song. It's so charming to listen to.

I'd add Crystal and Oh Daddy to your list. The acoustic Gypsy was such a success. I don't think they realize how much people enjoyed that and still listen to it. An acoustic set would be such a good idea...Tina Turner used to do it and would sit right in front with a guitar player on both sides. She had a blast doing it.

Two other things:

Always thought Lindsey should do a short medley of his Tusk songs, since there's many he's never done or hasn't done for a while. What about: What Makes You Think You're the One/Walk a Thin Line/The Ledge?

And I said this before, but Over My Head should be earlier in the set. No problem with it at all, just that toward the end it takes some momentum away. I would've suggested it as maybe the fifth song and presented the show as a musical journey, beginning with that very first hit single in 1975.

They play Everywhere with "tracks"(playing along to "canned" music).

Which raises the question ... how much are they using "canned" backing tracks ... and also, how much of what we are hearing is coming from the extra musicians? For example, I hear what sounds like a horn section on the audio of "Tusk." What's making that sound? Is that a "track," or is it being created by the extra keyboard guy in the shadows? How about all those extra layers of vocals in most of the songs? Are those all the backing singers, or are some of those pre-recorded?

On another thread, someone commented that it didn't even look like Lindsey is actually playing guitar, because one could hear guitar notes when his hands were obviously not touching the strings. (I think this was during a piece of "I'm So Afraid.")

I realize the days of seeing just the five of them on stage, no extra musicians, no "embellishments," are long in the past, but I want to at least know where the extra sounds are coming from.

The pre recorded / programed tracks are all part of Mick's ever evolving plan...Sometime in the not to distant future ( technology willing ) he will replace the entire band with hologram's so he can continue to collect touring revenue from the retirement home...As an added bonus Mick with a single mouse click will be able to replace any band member with another from any given era...Example...With one click during "Gold Dust Woman" Mick will be able to replace Lindsey with Peter Green...The show will be billed as "Mick's Fleetwood Mac Experience"

I always liked him. He was crazy just like a lot of other people, but he had a really big heart, and he was the closest thing to Brian there was, too. He was halfway there."

that would be Carol. She always has denied it, but Lindsey seems to think otherwise.

It's always been about the sum being greater than the parts for this band. We know it, they know it. Take any one of them out and it's not the same. Having Chris back makes the most popular configuration of the band complete once more. Her songs, the three part harmonies, her presence on stage, and in the studio has brought a lot of the hope back for this band, and quite frankly, the fans as well.

I hardly doubt Chris came back to grab some quick cash. She didn't need the money, especially to overcome her fear of flying and all the fears of the unknown rejoining the band. I believe it's more about personal fulfillment and doing what she wants to do, with the people she wants to do it with. Writing songs and playing music. She's an artist who realized she has more to give, and that doesn't just include gardening, cooking, and looking after her dogs. Chris struggled many years with FM and on personal levels before she was launched into superstardom with Stevie and Lindsey. It wasn't about the money then or she would have quit a long time ago. She loves what she does, plain and simple. Sure money helps, but it is not everything.

Band or business, I hope they continue to be successful, cause I like what they are selling! Who doesn't want them tour this year WITH Chris?! The answer is quite apparent by their tour numbers. We all want to take another ride with this band and enjoy it for as long as we can.

Hilarious, what a concept!!

I wouldn't say she has no entourage… she might not have the gaggle of hangers-on that Stevie has, but she for certain has people on her payroll. Even just domestic staff… she's got to have a couple of people at least who look after her house in England, her dogs, she's got a manager, accountant(s), lawyers, all those people who keep track of her money and her investments and her home…at the very least. I'm sure she has an assistant as well, just one not as much a caretaker as Karen (who oddly reminds me at times of Kathy Bates in Misery LOLOL ) EVERYONE and their brother has an assistant.
And who knows who else. But I agree, Chris doesn't seem to have a bunch of people whom she carries financially for life and who do who knows what (Glen Parish…). Just saying, she's rich. Rich people have staff, if not exactly entourage.

are we sure about that? He seems like the type to never talk about it, nor drag that person around everywhere he goes. But unless his wife is doing it, I would think he's got someone keeping track of his daily schedule and appointments and packing and sh*t. Even Chris said she was going to get someone to do the constant packing/unpacking for her this time coz it was one of the things she totally hated on tour. Then again, if you only have one bag with two teeshirts and pairs of jeans….but no, you still need someone to get your stuff cleaned. You can only pack so many pairs of knickers...

Cute answer, but not particularly helpful. When I see a band in a small venue (I haven't been to an arena show by anybody in years), I am confident that all the sounds I hear are being made by the musicians on stage. Since this is apparently not the case with Fleetwood Mac, it seems perfectly valid to wonder which sounds are coming from where. This is especially true when some sounds are being created by backing musicians, and others come from pre-recorded tracks.

well, during OMS tour for a while he didn't even have a tour manager on the road, it was just him, his guitar tech, and his sound guy. then as the tour went on and he added m&gs he also added a tour manager back, and i know that guy was tracking where they go, what appointments, and such.

he definitely has somebody taking care of the general logistics but that's different than personal assistant. either John or Mick also confirmed last year that Lindsey is the only one without personal assistant. also in the last year's tour book everybody's personal assistants were listed except Lindsey's. so yeah, pretty sure.

In their defense, nearly EVERY new artist does it now. The public expects perfection these days, and the only way to give it to them, is to have all the backing vocals on the choruses, and all the minute background string parts, present in the mix. There's a click track added, that usually only the drummer gets...

They have had added "hidden" stuff, since way before tracks. Back on the Tango tour, before the house lights went down, I was walking back from peeing, and when I craned my neck just right, I could see a MASSIVE keyboard setup, off stage, behind a curtain. I was standing on my tippy toes, taking in all I could, when a security DOLT yelled at me, and told me to stop looking. But one thing's for certain, Chris wasn't playing them!!!! Wasn't his name Jeff Sova? (spelling...I don't remember now)

I realize the days of seeing just the five of them on stage, no extra musicians, no "embellishments," are long in the past, but I want to at least know where the extra sounds are coming from.

always the rebel, that Mister Buckingham. :p

Makes sense in a way though. He's always been a bit of a loner, very self-contained.

That's correct-Jeff Sova--keyboard tech / roadie / hidden contributor. There are some old threads about his contributions to various songs and how that balanced with what Chris was doing, for example on Tusk or Don't Stop (as I recall).

ETA: here is an old article (1980) about Christine that references her support, Jeff and his role, equipment, etc. It was interesting to reread it.

I think he is referring to the girl who wrote the book Storms. Stevie was never with Dennis Wilson.

No, I agree. Just found it amusing that people think Stevie was also with him considering that particular girlfriend was as well.

I should have trusted my memory! It's not great, but it's fairly photographic, and I'm a spelling NAZI, so I got it right!

WHY would a security guard CARE that I was peeping into a gap in the curtain? Most security guards are douches.

Stevie is the most obvious one re energized. She is singing great with the band like she does during her solo shows. I guess her happiness make a huge difference. I love the girls singing together. I always wished for more of that. Glad to her stevie taking over more back ground vocals in little lies. Lindsey though. He seems castrated. Or maybe those jeans are too right. God damn those jeans! Still an excellent guitar player and singer, just not as much energy.

^^^^ When we saw Christine re-join them at the 02 in 2013, I never saw Stevie look so happy in my life. She was almost jumping up and down. And now I see Lindsey's face toward Christine. It's amazing to watch FMac's rebirth. I get tears myself. It's truly an amazing story.

I think the reason that we've been hearing so many references from all of them about how they're "back" and this is a whole new "chapter" for the band says a lot about how re-energized they are. It was really obvious at the Chicago concert last night - the very potent Mac chemistry was most definitely back.

From the way Lindsey, Stevie, and Mick were talking, it was definitely coming across like several albums and tours are coming.

In fairness, they always sound that way at the beginning of a tour. By the time it ends, they won't be able to stand in the same room long enough to record an album.

I think the humor that Christine brings makes all the difference. Just the way she makes simple statements can be funny, like at the Minneapolis show when she's describing the time when she and John lived in a "funky little flat in Malibu." The sarcastic, mischievous look on her face as she turns to John makes me crack up.
