Stevie will be at the Morrison Gallery on 10/9.

It's invitation only, but contact the gallery if you're in town -- maybe they still have space.

Beginning in the mid-seventies, Stevie Nicks took a series of Polaroid self-portraits in her home as well as hotel rooms around the world while on tour. Earlier this year, during the recording of her new solo album 24 Karat Gold - Songs From the Vault, she decided to share these never-before-seen self portraits. Each one of these archival pigment prints is hand-signed and numbered by Stevie Nicks.

"Some people don't sleep at night - I am one of those people. These pictures were taken long after everyone had gone to bed - I would begin after midnight and go until 4 or 5 in the morning. I stopped at sunrise - like a vampire... I never really thought anyone would ever see these pictures, they went into shoeboxes, where they remained. I did everything - I was the stylist, the makeup artist, the furniture mover, the lighting director. It was my joy - I was the model..."

- Stevie Nicks

I tried to get an invite and they said it was for buyers only of works over $2500.00 USD.
Anyone have an extra Plus One for this.
Or anyone get an invite that is not going.
I am dying to go to this but don't have $2500.oo USD to spend :(

I was supposed to go to this but had to get back to work for a few days. The real world is never as fun as Mac World. The past week was marvelous though.

Hey, I took these! :) --> twitter.com/carriecourogen

It was craziness. She came in, posed for photos, went into a curtained room for 20 minutes, came out and walked around the perimeter and posed, and left. They were yelling at everyone to move back CONSTANTLY. And she did zero press statements or interviews, save for a random tv interview - it was for like NY1 or something. I did talk to Dave, asked him how he convinced her. Hopefully I can do something with that. But otherwise, it was kind of a bust. I'm supposed to be writing about this for Bustle... you don't invite print and online press and then have no opportunities to get any quotes.

I missed all the Stevie-Mick-Christine fun as they were pretty much leaving as I arrived and surrounded by paparazzi leaches, but I had a wonderful time listening to the terrific album in the milieu of the fascinating photographs. Long story-short--the pics reminded me of Jack Smith's work--ornate, kitschy, personal--but not as gay as Jack Smith obviously.

Dave Stewart was there all night and I stupidly forgot to butt into his flirting with middle-aged females to talk to him about the Alphaville sessions :( :( :( :(

weeeeeellllll……..speaking from experience, married people often use their spouses and/or children as convenient excuses to get out of doing things they themselves do not want to do. Kinda throwing your spouse under the bus, letting them come off as the bad cop so you can be the good cop.

My bet is he really had no interest in promoting a bunch of Stevie's selfies, and given that she wants Dave to take some of his turf and produce at least her stuff on a new Mac album, I would totally understand if Linds had no real ache to hang with Stevie and Dave. That would also look bad from a politics position-- like somehow he's open to having Dave work on her stuff on the next album.

Not shocked on all counts that he wasn't there.

Ahhh, it looks like Stevie wore something new to the gallery.......this is weird.

Unbelievable! Did she have this dress welded to her body? It's getting really freaky. It's like she has become a living hologram; just insert her anywhere, in any situation. The image is always all the same, all the same, all the same...Rhiannon.

So I take it that Lindsey decided not go?

I assume Lindsey and John had no interest in bathing in Stevie's self-indulgent limelight. I can understand that. Mick and Christine are more social creatures, so they were good sports for making the appearance and showing their support. Is that Stevie's dog that Christine is holding?

That's a lot of broad assumptions. Could Lindsey's and John's absence just be because they weren't interested about participating in the event? They weren't obligated to be there. Neither were Mick or Christine; the big difference with them is that they are more social creatures, more inclined to attend these kind of things.I don't think there was any political agenda at play; Lindsey and John simply just didn't give a sh*t about it. This was about her solo career, not theirs.

We have no idea of any involvement Dave might have in Fleetwood Mac's pending album. If he is involved in any way, I don't think it will be as segmented as Christine's participation was with the Time album. That seems to be what you are inferring. I do understand why you would have those concerns.

In the best case scenario , Dave would serve as a co-producer for the whole album (not just Stevie's three or four songs), and relieve Lindsey of half the burden and responsibility. In theory, Lindsey might go along with that. But he has become a bit a of a control freak of sorts, so that may be hard for him. Do we have any idea of his relationship with Dave. I assume at least there is mutual respect between them.

Do we have any idea of his relationship with Dave. I assume at least there is mutual respect between them.

Well, Lindsey's answered a question by him before.

ROCKLINE - 27th August 2008

Dave Stewart joined us last week and, of course, Dave did several albums with Annie Lennox of Eurythmics fame and, um, they had their own situation. So here’s the question he left for Lindsey.

D: Hi Lindsey. This is Dave Stewart from Eurythmics and I think we’ve both shared a similar experience. How is it for you being with somebody and living with somebody who you were in love with and then breaking up and then still being in a band together?

Interviewer: You do have a common experience. *laughs*

L: Oh yeaaaah. *clears throat* Well, you know, that was, uh, a, it was something that defined not only, uh, Fleetwood Mac as a band and to some degree the appeal - You know, that you had these two couples who were breaking up and were somehow rising above that to do what had to be done. But it, you know, on a personal level it was difficult for a number of years because there were never really any time to get closure. Um, you, this person that was, that had moved away from you and that, from whom you had moved away from, was someone you saw every day, and someone you had to try and find your better self on a daily basis for, in terms of producing and - this is similar to Dave’s situation too - and to do the right thing for her as opposed to maybe, uh, a more selfish or petty thing. Um, and all of that, I think, left, uh, a certain amount of residue emotionally for a number of years. Uh, I think what happened, uh, was that I tended to focus very heavily on the music, uh, and the rest of my life was kind of closed off and, and it was a fairly narrow focused, you know, existence which was focused only on the music. And it was really only when I was, uh, given the gift of meeting my wife and having children that all of that started to unfold and the walls started to come down. So it was a long road, you know, sort of moving on from some of that. It was not easy.

-

And Linds mentioned Dave off his own steam way back when promoting the Unleashed tour...

How far along are you in planning a new Fleetwood Mac album?

We aren't far along in any specific sense. My mantra is to work on my dynamic with Stevie. She was a little uncomfortable when we got on the road last time, for whatever reason. Part of it was that she missed Christine, part of it was that I was getting 50 percent of the face time onstage and she wasn't used to having a guy get all that space. I think it threw her context out a little. So this time around I am very much wanting to make everyone as comfortable as possible and have that be the most important thing. But we have discussed, when this tour is done, going into the studio. The only specific we know is that we are leaning toward finding an outside producer. I think it would help to have an overviewer. It was pretty hard taking the reins last time. Not so much with the music but with the band politics.

Have any producers in mind?

We had a short a list, but I have no idea. We've talked about everyone from Daniel Lanois to Dave Stewart to Rick Rubin. That pretty much runs the gamut of approaches. We have to meet with a few people and see how it feels.

Yes I can see why Lindsey and John would have absolutely no interest in this whatsoever. Mick and Christine seem to like supporting Stevie - they also accompanied her to the "In Your Dreams" screening in London.

I was wondering about the dog too. Isn't Stevie's new dog a Yorkshire terrier called Mana? Could this be her?

I agree. She needed to work the room and get people excited about purchasing her art.

I know selfies are really "in" right now, but this project just seems kinda vain to me. I see Dave Stewart's influence all over this. I know many fans love him. He creeps me out.

I would have preferred she took a bunch of her own paintings and displayed those. I imagine it is very hard for Stevie to let go of them, but her fans would love to have her artwork hanging in their homes.

The other thing is she keeps putting off so many projects, like the Rhiannon movie...it surprises me that after all her comments about facing her own mortality after her mother died suddenly that she wouldn't be more receptive to getting many these projects that she has been talking about for 30 years rolling knowing she could drop at any time.

Christine and Mick don't have a problem hanging with Stevie and Dave at an event orchestrated by Dave for Stevie during an FM tour what does that say about band politics? Perhaps MF & CM welcome Dave's involvement on the next record.

I'm 95% sure it's Stevie's manager, Sheryl Louis' dog. His name is Rodney and I've seen/met him at several Stevie events. He is always being held by somebody, although they did let him run around Barnes and Noble a little bit before the dvd signing last year.

Dave is Creative /British and from what I have heard from people who know him he is fun and charming , He obviously has Stevie doing thing she have been doing decades ago .

I love the Polaroids they capture so much from happiness to loneliness . they were done as an outlet of creativity not for a minute of attention on social media

she should talk to Paul Stanley he sell his art and rakes in millions

she has always putting off / talking about projects maybe with Dave cajoling her something might get done he certainly has done more in the last few year ,getting her to express herself outside of recording /

I agree, he has gotten her to come out of her shell, and I know she feels "safe" with him... Meaning he doesn't bully her into making decisions about her music or her art...so if she is happy, maybe she will be willing to do more of the projects she has been putting off for decades.

Stevie hasn't stopped working since her mother passed away. She no doubt is aware of her own mortality, but from my perspective, she's taking advantage of every moment. And loving it while doing it.

And agreed, Dave no doubt was very involved in orchestrating this gallery show. And thank God he was! What a treat for these amazing pics to see the light of day. No complaints here!

6 Ahead-of-Their-Time Stevie Nicks Selfies

10/10/2014 AT 10:00 AM EDT

Not only was Stevie Nicks light years ahead of her time promoting the whole ethereal gypsy witch aesthetic (you're welcome, American Horror Story: Coven), but she was doing selfies before they were cool. (To be fair, though, Ringo Starr has her beat.)

That habit is the source of inspiration for the new photographic exhibit "24 Karat Gold," at New York's Morrison Hotel Gallery. (Prints are also available through the gallery's website and its Los Angeles location at the Sunset Marquis Hotel.)

In Nicks's own words: "I wanted to learn how to become a photographer and since I don't sleep at night, I started thinking, who am I going to ask to stay up all night and then do a show the next night?"

"I had a long cord that plugged into the Polaroid, and I put it on a tripod. I would sit with the button in my hand so that I could be completely dressed in a long white gown with red lipstick and big hair … I usually had to take about 12 shots until I got it just right. Lots of times I'd run out of film and I would send people out to buy me film in the middle of the night. I was doing this forever and I didn't stop until Polaroids were almost impossible to use because they all eventually broke down and we couldn't find film anywhere."

Nicks, who adds that she "didn't even get a digital camera until 2002," says she doesn't consider the series "selfies" (sorry, Stevie). She says she uncovered the shots while looking back on songs from years ago for her new album.

Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart (who produced Nicks's new album) curated the exhibit. "When Stevie was showing me some Polaroids she had in a shoe box about a year ago I couldn't help but notice the amount of care and attention to detail she had taken in taking these photos … [The exhibition] is an intimate look – a frozen moment in time through the eyes of the artist herself – during a period when she was as successful as any rock star could ever be and at the same time as vulnerable and lonely as every artist can be when it's 4 a.m."

Nicks's new album, 24 Karat Gold, was released Oct. 7. Fleetwood Mac is currently on a tour that reunites them with departed vocalist Christine McVie for the first time in years.

Thank you for sharing the pics from the show and news clips! Good for Stevie! Sure, it all seems like a Dave idea, but she went for it.

About Lindsey and John not being there-- I don't think it's a slight on Stevie at all. Give them both a break! Just 4 reasons among a hundred: #1 probably not their thing, and certainly not a priority. #2 they both have family and in this age of skype, face time, etc and children "getting older too," they might prefer to be interacting with their family. There's pics of Mick with his children on stage. Not clear if John or Lindsey have been able to be with their family. #3 It's smart to take a break and just rest when you get the opportunity if you need to. Many tour dates ahead. John is smart to rest if he needs it. Lindsey too, as the most active member of the band on the stage! #4 It's New York City-- they may spend their free time in ways that we don't have any clue about (shopping by day, taking in sights) and going back out into a social artsy situation in the evening with cameras isn't something I would want to do either!

I think it's wonderful that Christine and Mick did come out for Stevie--it certainly adds to the event. They sure look like rock star royalty, pulling it off with Mick's scarves. ;)

Forget Kim Kardashian, the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman knew the art of selfies long before Instagram—and now, Nicks' personal collection of Polaroids from the '70s and '80s is on display

To coincide with the release of Stevie Nicks' album 24 Karat Gold and the reunited Fleetwood Mac touring, former Eurythmics frontman Dave Stewart and music gallerist Peter Blachley have mounted an exhibit of 24 of Nicks’ Polaroids from her personal collection.

“I guess you could say these were the original selfies,” says Blachley, founder of Morrison Hotel Gallery. “But it’s so much more because back then it was a bit different. It was still an analog system so you had to make sure the focus on photos was correct, and the angle was correct. There must have been so many outtakes to get a photo one liked.”

Blachley, who founded the gallery in 2001 with music retail industry professional Richard Horowitz and legendary music photographer Henry Diltz, curated the exhibit along with Stewart, who first worked with Morrison in 2007 (at its Bowery space) when he approached the gallery owner with some photography.

The Eurythmics musician had a number of photographs of iconic rock figures including Mick Jagger and Tom Perry. The Morrison Hotel Gallery mounted a successful exhibition of the photos and stayed in touch with Stewart afterward.

Stewart says, “Stevie had tons [of photos]! Boxes! Some were just pictures of whatever was happening at the time, but these are self-portraits.”

Stewart, who has known Nicks since 1983, produced two of her most recent albums and first saw the photographs, which were taken between 1975 and 1987, six months ago. He indicates that he knew instantly they would look “amazing” enlarged and told Nicks he would get them printed and brought to the gallery. After seeing some test prints, Nicks agreed to the exhibit.

Stewart and Blachley worked with Nash Editions, the digital printmaking company started by photographer Graham Nash in 1991, for the enlargement process. Nash Editions had been instrumental to the high quality of Stewart’s previous exhibit.

“Graham Nash is one of our photographers and he was a pioneer in this kind of digital scanning and printing. We've done some shows with recording artists and we evaluate and represent about 110 of the best photographers of music in the world so that’s quite a high standard. The Polaroid is a large negative but it’s actually a positive so you don’t lose anything blowing it up large because the resolution is already very high,” says Blachley. “The whole process was not digital, it was analog and a couple of these are as large as 60 x 70 and there’s no softness. The only digital part is when they did the super high resolution scanning.”

Nash Editions made very few corrections to the photographs in the exhibit besides making small spots of black a bit darker and cleaning up tiny imperfections, but otherwise the Polaroids of the show are presented as Nicks originally shot them. The musician art-directed each one using a wire with a shutter trigger button and chose the 24 in the exhibit.

The exhibit will be on display at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York (116 Prince St., 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10012; 212-941-8770), as well as its location in Los Angeles (1200 Alta Loma Rd., West Hollywood, CA 90069; 310-881-6025) through Oct. 31, after which Blachley indicates the gallery will still have selects available for view through the holiday season.

And, here's the reason I was able to attend the gallery opening last Thursday:

Who Invented The Selfie? It's Hard To Say, But Stevie Nicks Might Just Be The Original Selfie Queen

Three decades ago, rock legend Stevie Nicks was crowned the Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Nicks). But now, she can add another royal title to her resume: the original Selfie Queen. Sorry, Kim K, but Stevie was taking selfies before you were even born — before they were even called selfies. There was no one singing “first, let me take a selfie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdemFfbS5H0),” no Snapchat, no Instagram filters. There were no 8-megapixel iPhone cameras with face detection — there weren’t even digital cameras. Nicks worked with an old school Polaroid, tripod, and a cable release to take carefully planned and designed self-portraits that are now being exhibited at the Morrison Hotel Gallery’s locations (https://www.morrisonhotelgallery.com/slideshow.aspx) in New York and Los Angeles through Halloween.

Beginning in the mid-seventies, as her career with Fleetwood Mac (http://www.bustle.com/articles/29572-where-was-hillary-clinton-in-her-20s-where-9-famous-women-were-at-age-23) was taking off, Stevie Nicks began taking Polaroid self-portraits in her home and in hotel rooms while on tour around the world. “Some people don’t sleep at night — I am one of those people,” Nicks says in a release about the exhibit.

The unusual hours meant that Nicks herself served as both the artist and the muse. “These pictures were taken long after everyone had gone to bed — I would begin after midnight and go until 4 or 5 in the morning. I did everything — I was the stylist, the makeup artist, the furniture mover, the lighting director — it was my joy. I was the model.”

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bzw-l05IIAA_rou.jpg

Most of the Polaroids found their fate in empty shoeboxes where Nicks stored them away soon after they were developed, never thinking eyes other than hers would ever see them. Thirty or so years later, Nicks and producer Dave Stewart rediscovered the prints while recording her new solo album 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault (http://stevienicksofficial.com/) — new studio recordings of previously unreleased demos from 1975 to 1987.

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/gSWGlfjQARo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This was before cameras automatically fixed the focus and exposure. Nicks would stick a Polaroid camera on a tripod and use a long shutter release cable to take the photos, sometimes taking as many as 12 shots before she found one she liked. The only reason she eventually stopped using Polaroids (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/09/18/a-show-of-stevie-nicks-portraits-by-stevie-nicks/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_php=true&_type=blogs&partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=1) is because they became “almost impossible to use, because they all eventually broke down and we couldn’t find film anywhere,” Nicks tells the New York Times.

Stewart was impressed with the technical detail of the snapshots, and wanted to convince the private songstress into sharing them with the world.

“I was explaining to her that they weren’t normal self-portraits. Even though they were on Polaroids, they were so good,” Stewart says. “I said I can blow these up and make museum prints. I think they’d be great in a big gallery. She went ‘Really!?’ and I said ‘Yeah! I’ll do it if you want’ and she said okay.”

Even blown up into 3-by-4 and 5-by-6 feet images, the images remain intimate and unique. In the exhibit’s release, Morrison Hotel Gallery Peter Blachley explained, “Her choice of set and color, combined with a fascinating creative imagination, documents a very special time in the history of music.”

The self-portraits put the rich history of the rock goddess’s career on display, from breezy 1970s California, to the heyday of ’80s rock. She’s Rhiannon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjx-NL4GlmE) in her black chiffon and witchy headdresses, the Gold Dust Woman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub-F1szzO74) with wide, glassy eyes, a heartbreaking tell of her well-publicized cocaine addiction. The photos mirror the diversity and stark honesty of her music. Glimpses of the wild side of rock and roll with big ’80s hair and loud makeup are contrasted against intensely intimate portraits of Nicks barefaced, quiet, vulnerable.

You can catch Nicks on tour with Fleetwood Mac, who just added 28 more North American tour dates for 2015 (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/fleetwood-mac-reunion-tour/). In the meantime, give her new album a spin (http://www.amazon.com/24-Karat-Gold-Songs-Vault/dp/B00MGS1UNA/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1413318754&sr=1-1&keywords=24+karat+gold+-+songs+from+the+vault) and take some selfies in her honor.

I went to the Hotel/Gallery (Dream) that they had in South Beach today. The guy I spoke with was very nice and we talked for a while. I was really interested to see how the Polaroids looked blown up since the quality of Polaroids prints were never that good to start with. I have to say I was impressed. They only carried several of Stevie's prints to the location but they looked amazing. And they had some really nice framed pieces from Danny Clinch too. I ended up buying a really nice book of Danny's. The guy at the gallery mentioned that they were working on a book for Stevie photos too, so we'll have to wait and see if it comes to full fruition. I told him it would sell really well. I'm still considering one of Stevie's prints. The guy said that they go UP in price as the limited signed editions came closer to selling out. Has anyone purchased any of these prints?

Sounds like the collection is nearly sold out and with the prices and quantities listed that's something like $11,000,000 in sales. Hopefully this book gets published.

Stumbled across this short clip of Stevie leaving the art gallery, I found it amusing:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NQxGGmqjXtE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I wonder who that guy is that keeps trying to get a picture with her. Marty seems quite irritated and the look on Stevie's face is gold (no pun intended).
