My vinyl copy was delivered at 2:10PM. I just checked and my email was sent out at 10:18 AM Eastern time. I was at Walmart are 1Pm and decided to check my email and my confirmation email was sent. At about 2:30 PM I clicked on the UPS link while waiting in the car at Walgreens and it said it was delivered! Then we went to United Grocery Outlet to pick up some Nonni's bread crusts to put Black Diamond cheddar spread on while I listened to the album. She Loves Him Still has some sweet flute parts on it.

Or at least offer a few small tidbits that stand out (like is I dont care part of any demo we know?) if you dont want to, fine just say so, but sending us to hunt you down on facebook isnt helping.

I'm listening now:

If You Were My Love: Payoff is when the song finally hits the minor chord after moving between the 1 and major 2 throughout. Not much happening.

Mabel Normand: Not my taste. Reminiscent of her vocal on Wide Sargasso Sea, but without a discernible chorus.

Twisted: Simple and beautiful, very Nashville. Full-on harmonies with Stevie and the girls. Major lyric change: "Well, I got your demons!" Song definitely moves. Best version we have officially but not quite the level of the live performances from '98.

Belle Fleur: Most musically interesting so far. Banjo! Sounds like something Dolly Parton might have recorded in the 80s. LOOOOOOONG musical intro with growling, grinding bass and mirrored in the outro. "Canyon dancing, all night long."

All The Beautiful Worlds: Very "Rock A Little." Really shows Stevie's songwriting prowess. Very sophisticated chord structure and movement. Synth/EP driven, again 80s in a good way. Brilliant vocal in bridge: "Ooooooh you say you're leavin' baby!" First one of the tracks we haven't heard yet that I'd call "classic Stevie."

I Don't Care: Hard rocker but pretty weak lyrically. Starts acoustic and rather soft, goes back and forth between electric and "unplugged" as she says "I don't mean it, I do care..." Reminds me of "Ghosts Are Gone" in the rockin' parts.

Watch Chain: Bass/electric-driven, another one without a distinct hook/chorus. Nice scooping harmonies on the end. My opinion thus far is other than Starshine, the rockers aren't faring well, kinda bland.

Hard Advice: not as expected. Might have been inspired by the the Petty conversation but very much a love song. Great chorus, nice 12-string work. "Go write some real songs... This is all wrong."

Blue Water: Settles into a "Cool Change" feel. Very 70s AM radio. "I'd like to sail the sea, take you on a slow ride..." Very prominent male vocal repeats at the end but I don't recognize the voice. Gorgeous a Capella ending, "Well, I sit and I wait ... For the morning to come." This will be a favorite.

Nice outro on Cathouse Blues with a horn section! Muted trumpet, trombone, clarinet flourishes, most out-there song she has done maybe ever.

The Dealer: Fidelity issues on the downloads aren't present on the vinyl. Nice and crisp. That's a relief. This is the only one of the ones we've already heard that I listened to all the way through because the difference between the download and vinyl were so striking.

One song i like A LOT more with these new batch of snippets is Belle Fleur. And at 30 seconds heard at thus point Mable still sounds like my favorite. And All the Beautiful Worlds sounds like a copy of the demo, especially the back up vocals, which is exactly what that particular song calls for. nothing needed to change there.

Holy crap, from what I'm hearing, these clips have addressed ALL my concerns! Proper harmonies on Blue Water. Not an Adult Contemporary sound on All The Beautiful Worlds. If You Were My Love sounds like it's building to more of a crescendo in that clip. Even Watch Chain sounds awesome... something I feared would turn out sort of cheesy. I Don't Care is the big surprise of the group, though... VERY intriguing! Her voice sounds out of this world amazing in all of these clips... it's like she's woken from a 20 year vocal coma.

JamieSPC
09-26-2014, 09:22 PM
She Loves Him Still: whoa, sounds like a recorder solo in the middle. The vocal is terrific, great harmonies throughout. Production similar to her single release with Lady A, "Golden." Her best closer since "Highwayman."

Overall impressions on first listen:
I'd put it after Bella Donna and TISL overall, but I find it miles ahead of IYD and he others as a "classic Stevie" album. Highlights are title track, Lady, Blue Water, Carousel, She Loves Him Still, Cathouse Blues (for sheer weirdness and novelty), and my favorite, All The Beautiful Worlds.

I think everyone is going to be pleased... It is a faithful offering for fans that have listened to lo-fi versions of these songs all these years, expertly rendered by brilliant players. It's still Stevie, so we get some clunkers (mostly lyrically), but as a vault-emptying gloss of demo material, I don't think it could be better.

Oh and I found the vinyl to be very consistent and well-mastered compared to the often grating downloads. Not hearing the rip distortion on the high end of her voice. Pure speculation, but Dave has released a good deal of vinyl over the last few years and I'm wondering if we've been hearing vinyl masters, which would warm up considerably on wax but would clip when compressed. It's a very cohesive listening experience, with the exception of Cathouse, which stands out only for the unusual (for Stevie) instrumentation.

Damn. I hope this doesn't bug me as much as I think it will. I'm sure, I'll love it either way, just because I love this song and Stevie's voice (yes, even now) so much. It's just I always thought of this song as Stevie's "gypsy esque" self power/love type of song, that having a male vocal (and a prominent one apparently) sing along as a duet seems odd and out of place.

My thoughts exactly. If she had to have him sing a duet with her, 'She Loves Him Still' would have made a lot more sense. I know there's plenty here who would strongly disagree with that, but I much prefer 'Blue Water' over the latter so there's my bias lol

Does the vinyl come with an immediate digital download code? Or do we have to wait until October 7th for that? I'm getting both the vinyl and the litho package delivered to my home in PA because it's much easier than trying to get a package at my NYC apartment. If my mom could just text me the code or something so I could listen to it ASAP, that would be the best.

The "24 Karat Gold" digital release (MP3 download and CD) has always been stated as October 7th.

The Sept. 29 release date was only for those who pre-ordered the first run "Double Vinyl" bundle through Warner Music Store via Stevies official web site.
BTW, the "double vinyl" bundle via Warner Music Store updated the release date to Oct. 30th, which I assume is because it's actually the official street date release for "24 Karat Gold" (vinyl only) in the few remaining record stores across the U.S.

If you look carefully at the fine print of your order confirmation on the "Deluxe LP + Digital Album" bundle you will clearly see that the digital download will not be released until Oct. 7th
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t118/longdistancewinner/rmlAS_zps16a7577d.png

That being said, It wouldn't surprise me to see Warners, or some other site (i.e. NPR, Rolling Stone, etc.,) streaming part of the record, or its entirety next week ahead of its official release date of Oct.7th. That seems to be pretty common nowadays, plus they did it with IYD.

Of course I said its fine that the release date is what it is. The problem is the error page on a major release. Put up something that says "Thank you for your purchase! Try again on release date" or something. Anything else looks like neglect or ineptitude.

I run a bunch of websites for a living and anytime we release something in print, we are sure to at least have a landing page up.

I'm not really complaining (or if I was I shouldn't be)... The vinyl sounds terrific and arrived early. Works for me!

Well, I gotta say this album is a big winner. The production, her voice and some surprised make this one of the best things she has ever done as a solo artist.

1.Starshine - great opening, as good as enchanted, great vocal

2 If You Were My Love - this may be my favorite from the album, love this, produced perfectly

3. Mabel Normand - hell no, punt this song to the moon, do not like it at all

4. Twisted - best version ever

5. 24 Karat Gold - one of my favorites from album for flow and imagery

6.Belle Fleur - interesting, good country song with depth, very early 70, like it

7. All The Beautiful Worlds - good job, another ballad on this album that works

8. Lady - nice heartfelt ballad

9. I Don't Care - not my favorite, but she changes if from I don't care to I do care at the end. It's interesting song and a good jam. Good

10. Watch Chain - really good jam, like it

11. Hard Advice - one of my favorites from album, you can understand the story and its got a great chorus, love it

12. Carousel - good song sung excellently

13. Blue Water - Love it, better than demo, one of my favorites

14. Cathouse Blues - nice bluesy song, sung very well

15.The Dealer - love the song, one of my favorites

16.She Loves Him Still - love the song, one of my favorites

Short and sweet. Thanks! these reviews really do help us out by giving us an idea. Based on the instagram clips, I think they all sound amazing, and surpasses IYD by miles. Not too glossy or overproduced. A simple arrangement that brings out Stevie's vocals and lyrics. I'm really looking forward to All The Beautiful Worlds and Blue Water (even with that dude's vocal, UGH) Even Mabel Normand. From what I've heard so far, I really like it. Yes, it'll probably be a bunch of rambling lyrics all over the place, but it'll be nice little homage to the incoherent weirdness that was the RAL era. I dig it.

You hit the nail on head. Mabel Normand belongs on Rock a Little for sure. :( too bad it showed up here.

I want to hear "Mabel Normand" so bad. I neeeed to hear how she sings the "You and your friend are at odds, you are not winning, why does someone always have to win?" part!

I'm going to be listening to this album for years. It's one of her best ones. I definitely hope it isn't her last.

I'm very excited to hear this album. I liked In Your Dreams and Trouble In Shangri-La both quite a bit, myself, so for me this is likely the third album in a row to be on par with her earliest solo work.

Her comments about how she has enough songs in the vault to do "another 3 albums" sounds like this is definitely not the last time she's going to do this.

All the Beautyful Worlds is pure Stevieness. Mabel Normand is somewhat like Bob Dylan's. Hurricane . The line 'I want to be your friend' in Blue Water makes me tear up.

Despite Mabel's antiquated timeframe, I love her so much, and that song means more to me than anything.. For some reason or another. Those lines are also my favourite.

Yes! That's what it reminded me of! As soon as I heard the clip, I knew it reminded me of something, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. And 'Blue Water'. That line is pure beauty. Looking forward to it.

Just heard the full Mabel Normand..I really like it and yes it did also remind me of Bob Dylan's Story of the Hurricane....Belle Fleur is also incredible..so different from anything she has done.

Just heard it too.

I'm not sure if I preferred it to the demo, but it was an interesting alternative. Whereas the demo is more of a ballad, this new version has an anger and lament reminiscent of "You Can't Fix This" in my opinion.

Poor Mable (Mabel?) Normand.
A very notable, eclectic song. In comparison it makes The Nightmare appear more cohesive!

I like it for the very reasons most people will hate it: it's abnormal and eccentric. It has no conventional structure of verse and chorus. It's a beautiful and frantic mess, which mirrors the life of her subject. It's not a sing-song, but more of an art song.

I can appreciate it when Stevie rocks a little too much and falls off the cliff. It's bound to happen occasionally; after all, she is a self-professed old school cliff dweller.

When was the last time Stevie got as weird as Mable Normand? Not for a very long time, that's for sure. I love it!

I'll post a longer review later. All The Beautiful Worlds is sex though,

Absolutely agree ..I could think of no better song to represent where she was in that final year or so of cocaine addiction..and to me it has a Bob Dylan /Patti Smith vibe on this album.

"All the Beautiful Worlds" has become my favorite, can't stop listening to that one.

Side 2 of the vinyl is pretty perfect, like a little EP from the past but somehow new. You've got "24 Karat Gold" (as many have said, classic Stevie in the "Dreams" vein), "Belle Fleur" (strange, strange song), "All the Beautiful Worlds" (perfect, IMO) and "Lady" (stunning). The rest of the album is good, too, but that run of 4 songs is stellar.

Exactly. I'm actually really impressed that she had the guts to put something like this on her album considering its not exactly commercial friendly. Surprisingly enough this is the song that has me the most intrigued; her vocals sound great on it, the music is moving, and her lyrics are endearingly all over the place. I'll admit, RAL is my favorite era, so naturally I'm a fan of all the rambling, wild craziness of it all. So happy this song was included.

"Strange things do follow when you love someone

So you put that someone in exile

How about I call you beloved exile"

Fantastic album from start to finish. The only song I'm not quite into as a stand-alone is IYWML, but it fits well on the album as a whole. Stevie sounds fantastic.:]

Just heard the whole song of Mabel Normand. This song is so frickin' awesome. Who would have thought RAL Stevie would translate so well now? It totally does. It's so different from anything she's done in the last ten years. This song is superb.

My vinyl copy just arrived at the office. With much anticipation, I opened the box and carefully slipped the vinyl jacket and it's contents out of the plastic shrinkwap.....only to discover, much to my horror, that WB really cheaped out and put the records in plain white paper sleeves.

Plain paper sleeves will scratch your records. They will leave scuff marks, more and more, the more times you slide those records in and out of them.

I hate these white paper sleeves. They will end up in the trash when I get home, replaced with scratch-free anti-static MoFi sleeves. I wish the records had come in glossy printed sleeves.

What kind of turntable do you have? I have a Kenwood KD-12 RB from around 1984. It was having issues with sound dropping out of one speaker or the other. I found out that if would touch the parametric controller it would sometimes fix the sound. When I ordered this album ,I also ordered a good copy of The Wild Heart. The Wild Heart played good on my system. Now I played this album at least 5 times it sounds flawless. I was taking a risk on buying new vinyl for unit that may not work.

I'm using a Sony from Best Buy. PSLX300USB; it's a standard old-school component turntable, but also connects to a PC for needledrops, although I have yet to use it for that. It sounds great and has a built-in preamp, but the needle doesn't seem to be upgradeable, and it doesn't have a weight adjustment dial. But, it was 99 bucks and I've been happy with it so far. I'll upgrade it in a few years, but it's holding up well so far.

It just occurred to me this morning about what I might do if the record skips. I haven't had to face this dilemma since the early 1990's. LOL So far I have only listened to side 4 because I HAD to hear Blue Water first. Every song on side four skips. The problem could be the record or the fact that I have a very old turntable.
