I have to admit, I'm not really thrilled about this one. I've listened to it about 5 times now. Seems waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too slow for some reason. Even slower than the actual demo. Her voice sounds very "Street Angel" esque on it as well. Lethargic. Lazy.

Yet again, though...shall not judge until the full song is available. But that's just my first impression. Something seems a bit off kilter.

This pretty much sums up everything I was going to say. Street Angel lethargy & Adult Contemporary production :distress:. But like you said, I'm not writing it off yet by this snippet. The larger picture could make up for it. Not that I was ever a fan of the original demo anyway... but I digress.

I like it a lot. They used a flute. Was really surprised in a good way. It sorta sounds like My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.

Reminded me of something out of The Hobbit.

I'm not crazy about this snippet either.

but honestly, the demo for me is pure magic and there's no way Stevie can duplicate it.

This sounds great. I've been a fan of the demo since I first heard it in 1989, and consider this almost a 'holy grail' of Stevie Nicks songs.

For years it has been said that she would never record this song because of Mark Knopfler - And I am glad to see that isn't the case any longer.

Yes, it's a little slow - so was the original.

I don't like it - the harmonies sound weird and it's really slow.

Her voice doesn't sound great either - I'm wondering whether it was recorded towards the end of the session?

This is the first snippet I've heard so far that I'm not over-the-moon excited about. But who cares?! I'm loving every other song or snippet I've heard so far, and if the last of the 16 tracks isn't amazingly awesome, so what! And who knows, maybe this one will surprise once we hear the full take!

The production is exactly like the new version of All The Beautiful Worlds- really slow & Adult Contemporary.

I've never heard anything about this before. What's the story?

If it's the song I'm thinking it is...Stevie wrote a song to a Mark Knopfler instrumental when Mark heard of this he sent word that if Stevie ever recorded it he would sue the chiffon skirt off her...

None of the sixteen second snippets thrill me. I have to listen to live with the whole song to form an objective opinion, then over time, my opinions might change. So far I like all the songs that been revealed in full form - The Dealer, Starshine, Lady, and 24 Karat Gold.

I assume, like all of Stevie's songs, I will like the new songs in varying degrees. I hear no difference in the sound of her voice in this snippet from any of the other songs. Sure, the tempo might be seconds slower than the demo, but I expect that every new version is going to have some differences. I don't expect a "thrill" level with every song, but I will love (or like) them still.

Idk, from what I'm hearing so far, I like it. It's pretty and I like the flute. Then again, I'm not really a fan of the demo, so my expectations weren't high for this track. I think the slow adult contemporary arrangement works for this track.

I first heard Stevie's original demo for this song about 17 or 18 years ago, and it's been one of my favorites ever since. This clip sounds beautiful. Stevie's vocal is soft and lovely, and the instrumentation is sweet and simple. Just the way it should be.

Now I'm chomping at the bit even more than ever to hear the full track.

I know that's long been the story that's gone around, but do we know for sure that it's true?

Once we have the album in our hands, it will be interesting to see if the music is at all different from the demo (what we hear in the snippet sure sounds the same) and whether or not Mr. Knopfler has a writing credit.

No. In fact, I heard it here on The Ledge. I think it was said that Stevie sent him a copy of the song and he sent her a cease and desist letter in response, but I have no other source for this that The Ledge.

We'll this is one of her demos that I've actually never been able to get all the way thru, I dislike it so much. I've tried about 3times and then another 2 recently since I found out it was on the album. Still cant get thru it. I already like this 15 seconds a little better just because I'm a sucker for flutes. we'll see when the whole thing is released if I can finally make it thru this song.

Forsaken Love would've been a much better choice then this song!

Still not crazy about the demo lol but the clip makes me hopeful. A more complete arrangement, is exactly what this needs.

I'm guessing "borrowing" instrumentals is pretty common for Stevie (EO17, Illume) I'm surprised she hasn't gotten sued actually.

What did Stevie borrow from the Ashcroft song? Nothing sounds familiar on it to me, but I also may just be crazy/deaf lmao.

The reality is copyright laws are somehow simultaneously selective & indeterminate ... You can't really sue for using the same instrumental "idea" as someone else's song, if the melody/lyrics/chord progression (but really the chord progression isn't protected, either) are different.

The Ashcroft song is more far reaching than the previous, but Illume heavily borrows from the instrumental "idea" of this song.

Totally. The "til his dying day not even he himself can change this" is sung soooooooo drawn out. It's like she's moving thru molasses, or running in slow motion….. I loved the acoustic guitar on the demo (take 1) and hope at least that aspect of that is in this new version.

I think the demo had a real sense of wistfulness and a sort of pain of lost love. This version sounds too slick, she doesn't sound as engaged with the words. It sounded more like a fresh wound in the demo; now all these years later it sounds more like a 'performance'…. if that makes any sense.

And thanks to those who posted the link to the Mark Knopfler song. This version really does sound a lot like it. Now I'm curious AND nervous to hear the full version.

Well said. That's often the case with Stevie, it seems, that she created these songs when the emotion was present instead of past, and sometimes the feeling that made a song so great is completely lost.

She Still Loves Him got me through some very tough times, so I was very apprehensive about this one. Nevertheless, I sort of like this. I am very very very nervous though, because of 1) the flute 2) that last bit where she turns the "still" into a run.. I don't know, I really want to like it, but I am nervous.

Silver girl sucked. I hear a little influence but not that much. The only problem I have with your assertions is that Stevie is not an actual musician. She couldn't play this music in demo form. What does she do - tell her musicians and producer to copy his tracks? Would Lindsey do that? It was his guitar on Illume. Very strange.

Wasn't it Waddy who took credit for the Edge of Seventeen riff? She didn't create that riff. Maybe after the success of Edge she started to listen to his music for more ideas.

actually the interview I read he described coming in to work on the song and hearing what they had in mind and playing it, and then later, hearing the Police song or someone playing it for him and him saying to himself, "my god we really ripped them off"

He has since backed off those remarks, but it always made it sound like someone (Jimmy? Stevie? both?) had the sort of riff they wanted in mind and he executed it, and later realized it was a copy of the Police. But who knows.
