fleetwood mac 2014 on with the show

To celebrate forty years since forming this line up, Fleetwod Mac is about to embark on a forty date North American tour, doing multiple nights in many of North America’s biggest cities, an unequivocal testament to this specific band’s evergreen starpower. With singer/songwriter/vocalist Christine McVie on board once again, Fleetwood Mac is back to full strength with the mid ’70s line up that made them international superstars, and three of them, singer/songwriter/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks, and band co-founder Mick Fleetwood join us In the Studio on the eve of their North American tour for some of their most popular songs performed live. -Redbeard

She makes sure Rhiannon always has a good one tour's rest? That's a good one. LOL

So I guess we're not to expect it in the upcoming tour. Let's see how that goes...

Edit: Oooo, they're talking about Tusk next week!

yeah, it really shocked and almost concerned me that she could make a statement such as this which is almost entirely false. Does she really believe this? I sure hope not.

But a good interview nonetheless. Some different subjects being discussed. It blew me away that Lindsey can't read music. I had no idea.

Not true. In the last tour, I thought the "fresh-est" of Stevie's songs was Gold Dust Woman. She really went for it on that song, even if some people on here were complaining it was too long. Gypsy desperately needs that acoustic arrangement to give it life again, which could then draw the attention away from Stevie lowering lines of the song to its "new" sound. Dreams might be better this time around with Christine's harmonies back in; the harmonies are really what made the song a classic. And Sara...how can they play it without Lindsey's guitar flourishes, which added so much momentum and direction to the song? That makes me almost as angry as the Sisters of the Moon arrangement they came up with last year. Not knowing their history indeed.

How about adding Christine's keyboard back into Gypsy. Also, Christine's piano is what makes Sara, if it wasn't for that piano riff, Sara would not be so amazingly beautiful. It's the thing I'm looking forward to the most when I see them in October, Christine playing the piano on Sara.

You are right. The only tours that "Rhiannon" has NOT been performed are "Tango" and "Other Side Of The Mirror" tours. Is She losing her memory?? "Rhiannon" has not had a BREAK from the set list since 1989, 25 years ago!! Moreover, the chances that it will be "dropped" from the "On With The Show" set list are 0 %.

no, just her usual re-writing of history to fit whatever narrative she wants to sell at the moment. Like the "3 years" quote on the last tour. If that serves as any example, expect the rest of the band to go along with the "we drop Rhiannon every other tour" shtick as well. :distress::mad:

They didn't do Sara on The Dance. The last time they performed Sara with Christine was in 1982 during Mirage. I agree with you on Hold Me though, I love that song. But I never really expected that they would play it, so my next favorite thing is the piano tune on Sara. I would love to see it in person.

Anti Music 9/18/2014

http://www.antimusic.com/news/14/September/18Fleetwood_Mac_In_The_Studio_For_Tusk_35th_Anniversary.shtml

Syndicated radio show In The Studio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands this week is running part one of a two part special on Fleetwood Mac celebrating their North American tour and the 35th anniversary of their 1979 classic Tusk. The show sent over these details:

To celebrate forty years since forming this line up, Fleetwood Mac will perform forty dates including multiple shows in several of the biggest North American cities, an unequivocal testament to this specific band's evergreen starpower. With singer/songwriter/vocalist/keyboardist Christine McVie on board, once again, Fleetwood Mac is back to full strength with the mid-'70s line up that made them international superstars.

In Part 1 which airs this week, Stevie, Lindsey, and Mick speak candidly about how Californians Buckingham and Nicks found their way into the very British band Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks shares with InTheStudio program host Redbeard her awareness of the complex dynamics she would face after the two then-lovers became members of Fleetwood Mac.

"You have to remember: Fleetwood Mac was not looking for another girl singer. They were looking for a guitar player, period. The fact that the guitar player they found happened to have this girlfriend, that they instantly knew he was not going to give up for them… I know Mick joked to many people, 'Well if she doesn't work out... off with her head!'" (laughs)

I hope Silver Springs stays in the set. With Christine, the opening pianochords will be the closest we will ever get to hear 'Why'.

And I'd like Sara in this set too. It's going to be a sort of greatest hits tour of this line-up. So Sara has to be there.

Christine probably has no idea how many people would love to hear her perform Why. If only there was a way for fans to have contact with the band? She'd probably do it...she has said Mystery to Me is her favorite FM album, with Rumours.

Lindsey's discussion of Storms reminded me of the recent article where Christine was trying to come up with some material and Lindsey said "just write about sex".

I've never thought the line "every night that goes between" in particular the "goes between" as being anything sexual….but he sure seems to think so

I did really like how he described her vocal and how he wanted to arrange the song around it to support the notion of it being like a whisper between two people. He clearly seems to think it's about him.

wonder when Lindsey portions of the interview were recorded... he talks about his time back in FM after leaving, that they've done a live album and a studio album since, but that he still didn't feel like he was really completely back in the band unconditionally... so maybe some time after SYW?

does this mean our speculation about his motivations for doing the recent and upcoming tours (ka-ching) is spot on??

definitely sounds like his current voice. and he talks about them having done an album and (at least) one tour up to the point of his interview.

I like how they got him talking about his production goals for songs… except they really mostly asked about Stevie's songs, not his (except for a bit about the song Tusk). But the album Tusk is just raw with his emotions (both hurt and angry) and they didn't touch on any of that at all.

I haven't listened yet but I assume it's from 2009 (2008 interview or a bit earlier, though) as that's when the 30th anniversary interview aired and that was new from Lindsey, and the portion described above regarding Storms was part of that.

That's really interesting because I've loved the Storms song for so long and I've always interpreted the "goes between" phrase as "being apart" from the other person. It always sounded to me like a love affair that had already ended. I recall Stevie saying this song was about Mick, but I think that was a fairly recent comment, perhaps after this interview was taped.

I also liked Lindsey's comments about letting the vocal and supporting production feel like the song was a whisper. I thought that was really lovely. It supported my long-held view that Lindsey nailed the production on Stevie's songs on Tusk.

She dropped it from the 'Tango' set and it was NEVER played on the OSOTM Tour.

When I attended her OSOTM show, I was quite happy that Rhiannon wasn't in the set, and she let the song rest. It was not missed. No song "has to be" in any set. I was happy that she performed a respectable amount of new songs in the set - almost half of the album - Rooms on Fire, Two Kinds of Love, Whole Lot of Trouble, Juliet and Alice.

If an artist has any faith in their work, there should at least 5 to 6 songs in the set of the tour promoting their album. The show doesn't to be glutted with greatest hits list. A mix of signature songs & hits, deep tracks, and new songs keeps a set list fresh and uniquei.

I don't think the absence of Rhiannon spoiled the party for anyone.

And these are my two favourite lengthy parts - from Lindsey and from Stevie, respectively. Excuse any errors; it was a quickly done transcription and I haven't checked it.

LINDSEY ON STORMS
R: What kind of presentation did this song demand when she brought this in?
Well, again, we wanted to, um, if we had done that in a conventional way it would’ve come off like a country song, probably. A little bit. And we wanted to pull everything back. You know, it’s like her vocal. She gets to a place where she’s kinda, y’know, right in here like she’s talking to someone up close and some of the time she’s - little, little fear and certainly pain is come out but like this and everything around it must hold that kind of line. It’s a completely tactile experience, that song, you know. And, uh, you know, the piano is played as lightly as - Christine just did a superb job. It’s a whisper, that song. And it - it’s one of my favorite things on Tusk. By far.
R: Oh, man.
Well, you know, she’s -
R: I’ve never heard her that honest on a microphone.
It’s such a vulnerable thing she’s allowing herself to be in that moment because -
R: You captured one there. That’s amazing.
And it’s ironic, you know. She’s at a point where she’s probably at the height of her visibility and she’s probably thinking back to a few years earlier and how that, the scale of that visibility and the choices she’s made has put her in a position where she’s really lost touch with a fundamental importance and, uh, you know, ‘every night that goes between I feel a little less’, you know, ‘goes between’. I mean, that’s, you know, a very, uh, suggestive line and a pretty major thing to say.

STEVIE ON ARGUMENTS AND APOLOGIES
It’s very hard to get up and walk out of a room instead of turning around and saying “Well, if you really want to know how I feel, you know, let me, I’ve got a list, let me go get it.” You know. “And let’s just sit here for two or three hours”. And the next day, you’re so sorry. Because, really, half of it was totally ridiculous anyway and you could’ve just been having a bad day. An unfortunate thing that happened, you know, with me and Lindsey was, when the band broke up, was that Lindsey and I said things to each other that I wish we had never said. That are etched on both of our hearts in stone. And because of that we can never, ever be anything to each other again, ever. That was a very big lesson for me to learn and I’m, I’m very sorry for the things that I said to him. And I know he’s very sorry for the things he said to me. Because, you know, we went through too much and we lived together and we loved too much and we meant too much to each other for those words to be said. And they were said and they can never be taken back.

Wow good job, Nicole.

I love this part (bolded) coz his voice mimics the low, kind of hoarse quality of her voice on the song and by the time he talks about Christine's part he is very very whispery….acting out how he thought the song was/should be.

I didn't get the sense that Lindsey feels that line is sexually suggestive -- but, rather, suggestive of Stevie's state of mind at the time & her conflictions. Hence his reference to her being at the height of her fame/visibility and thinking over some of the choices she'd made and "fundamental" things she'd lost touch with.

I just listened to it again, and I gotta go with "suggestive" as sexual, especially the way he says it, his intonation and all.

Even if he didn't mean sexual, I'm still not at all clear why he thinks the two words "goes between" are,as he says, "pretty suggestive" and "a major thing to say". Really? "goes between"??

I agree he feels the overall song is about her reflecting on choices she's made and maybe having some regrets about ending their relationship or at least how it ended.

But it still leaves his fascination with the actual words "goes between" hard to understand.

Stevie frequently says things that are not true. She is not lying but it sounds great when she says stuff only to know it is not true.
She gets things mixed up a lot. Her solo tours are the shortest sets in rock history but I hear her say she plays 2 1/2 hours. No way!
Its lots of little stuff but no big deal

InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands takes a look at one of the most interesting personnel changes in Rock’n’Roll, setting off the musical tsunami of Fleetwood Mac’s third and most successful era with this self-titled album forty summers ago.

British ex-pats blues band Fleetwood Mac had established themselves over seven years (1968 - 1974) and ten albums as a respected musical outfit. No stranger to personnel changes (15 different members over the band’s forty-eight year career), none was more impactful than the departure of American Bob Welch in 1974 and the serendipitous arrival of struggling singer/songwriter duo Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. That fateful union would forever change the music, and fortunes, of Fleetwood Mac.

The 1975 “White Album” would become Warner Bros. Records’ biggest-selling album to date and produce three hit singles, “Say You Love Me”, “Rhiannon”, and “Over My Head”. InTheStudio host Redbeard spoke to Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks about the transformative union, and just how quickly their personal and professional lives changed.

“Initially we were looking for a guitar player, but almost instantaneously upon
inquiring about their (Lindsey & Stevie’s) situation, I found it to be they came
very much as a package… As soon as we started playing together it became very evident, in terms of the spark, and realizing the chemistry that was definitely there.” - Mick Fleetwood

“It was like overnight, hugely successful. And it was hard for my little brain to
accept that kind of fame, that fast ..You have to remember: Fleetwood Mac was NOT looking for another girl singer. They were looking for a guitar player, period. The fact that the guitar player they found happened to have this girlfriend, that they instantly knew he was not going to give up for them… I know Mick joked to many people, ‘Well if she doesn’t work out... off with her head!’” (laughs) - Stevie Nicks
