interesting statement from Stevie in some new interview, advertising her retro solo album, that just showed up on FM N&R:

Buckingham, Nicks says, would be happiest if she didn’t do anything other than Fleetwood Mac. “He knows that’s never going to happen, so that is, I think, his biggest problem with me,” she says. “I wish that he could not care. "

not sure that his problem is that she not doing only FM, or that she's not putting FM first, but i guess that's just semantics. (considering he's doing solo stuff too, i don't see him conditioning other FM members with no solo, only mac. i guess the difference is he doesn't put solo needs ahead of the mac needs - and how i wish he did! - unless he has explicit agreement form the whole band they will give him a time for solo.)

Maybe that's because, in comparison to Stevie, Lindsey's solo career has fallen quite flat and never really taken off in the way Stevie's did.

If Lindsey's solo career had been the success that Stevie's was, I'm sure he'd be more inclinded to focus more attention on solo work than he does as I imagine it's far more creatively rewarding for him than the constrants of Fleetwood Mac.

I do always get the impression that Lindsey has been rather bitter at times over his lack of solo success. Might not be the case today, but it certainly has been.

Ha! SHOCKED you pulled this quote out to look at, Elle. :D

I don't think it is just semantics and I actually think the crux of the matter is actually that he'd rather she just worked with him (as opposed to running to Dave for help), which I know you won't agree with. At the moment, Fleetwood Mac is the vehicle that allows them to work together and without it, she doesn’t have to rely on him or work alongside him for her music, something he has taken and takes great pride in doing (the "soulmate who knows exactly what to do with her music"), and that’s why FM is mentioned in this context. I’m fairly certain he’d be JUST as happy (probably more so) if she didn’t do anything other than Buckingham Nicks, or just anything where they can publicly work together, tbh.

I DO think what you're saying partly comes into that. He probably has been and is frustrated when her group work is put on the shelf in order for her to do solo work (or that's at least what it SEEMS like to him) whereas he feels the opposite is true for him. *cue harping on about solo work being hijacked* And he took that agreement and those years and gave us some fantastic albums and tours. Now, he's been ready to move onwards, forwards? And she apparently hasn't been. So that IS a problem of sorts but I don't think it's the whole of the problem Stevie's talking here that he has with her work. One thing, though. We are not privy to their private discussions, legal agreements, etc. We don't know there was no 'explicit agreement'. We don't even really know what the whole of their initial plan was (in regards to timing and the new album), We don't know if or when changes were made to it if a tacit or binding agreement existed. And so on.

I did think it was well amusing last year when she talked in her Landslide introduction about how she managed to do both solo/FM and it didn’t ruin the band, etc, and how she made sure to look straight at Lindsey and get acknowledgement that it was true.

I do think Stevie's draw has fallen flat as well. When you start seeing them pop up on Casino billboard's, the days of filling up arenas are over.

Whereas FMac has just added yet another show to Los Angeles. And ticket's for a front row seat are $10,000. Hardly a casino price.

that sh*t just p*sses me off no end. Who are you going to get in the front row for 10K? Sure as h*ll not hardcore true fans (maybe a couple) but more likely you're going to get some big spenders who don't really care/know the band that well but who want to impress their friends/dates or whoever. Is that who a band wants to see when they look in the first few rows? Some fat cats or tech nerds who have some bucks but aren't all that into the music?
Then again, when you're on a cash-grab, the goal is to grab that cash.

Richard Dashut has acknowledge this on his blog. That Lindsey resented her success and wished he'd had similar success.

It's the ticketmaster/stubhub monopoly that nobody says a word about.

I think he only minds when the solo work conflicts with FM. He doesn't seem to care what she's doing when there's no FM on the horizon. When he told the band not to come knocking on his door, he wasn't concerned with what she was doing solo and he seemed happy for her about IYD, but it seems like the band (or he and Mick, if not John) thought promotion for IYD was going to end one year sooner than it did, which led to Mick's Playboy interview, etc.

You bring up a great point. I remember now, he wanted an album even before Christine came back. And that led to the EP. But then there was talk of an album after this tour. (even without Christine).

This strikes me as a typical exaggeration by the most self-absorved member of the band. I doubt Lindsey in 2014 would expect her not to have a solo career. Total BS.

At times, sure. But that doesn't seem to be the case today. He seems to have become a realist about the whole thing. The issue here is Stevie getting caught in a time warp and pretending this is 30 years ago, when Lindsey was indeed holding a grudge because of her solo success.

You got it. Stevie and her fans are still acting like it's 1981 when she did not need the band. Today, her appeal as a solo artist is very limited. It seems she hasn't come to terms with that yet.

In my opinion Lindsey wants to be the provider for his woman. (Once his lady always his lady) it gives men a sense of purpose to provide and because he didn't get to give her his world cause she didn't want it, when she exercises independence and not relying on him and what they created together with the Mac, it's salt in that old wound. He still wants the commitment from her and feeling that what they do is prioritized over her solo. And on Stevie s end she sometimes in my opinion fills the void of no relationship or children with over working the solo career. When she talked about putting twelve kids out into the world, it's like she uses mentoring to fill the need to mother that went unfulfilled.

It's ok under all this is love.

yes. and that's basically what the band has been saying in those earlier interviews this year, and now finally Stevie said the same thing (in her exaggerated way):

Lindsey is unhappy with her right now because she put her solo needs in the way of the band album.

Wow, I guess I give Lindsey more credit than you do.

No, I don't. We all know he had issues with her solo career in the beginning, and we also know he's been wanting her to do another Fleetwood Mac album since 'Say You Will.' I'm sure he would have been happier had she gone into the studio with Fleetwood Mac in 2010, instead of with Dave Stewart. And, yes, he probably would have been happier had she been in the studio with him and Christine this past Spring.

However, I still don't think that changes the fact that the band had no intention of releasing a new album before this particular tour -- and, therefore, that Stevie's album didn't prevent it from happening.

yes i know, you stated that's what you think, numerous times.

and yes, i do think they wanted to try to finish the album before the tour start, and possibly release it in that window when they are in NYC (which now both Stevie and Mick are using for their separate projects instead).

but that's not what this thread is about.

this thread just concludes that Lindsey is not happy she was not in the studio with them this year. band implied it in earlier interviews, and Stevie said it about Lindsey now. you stated numerous times that you don't think that's true and that she had a full consent of the band to go off and do her solo stuff instead, that she was not needed in the studio yet.

I still have no doubt she had the band's consent (as if she even needs it).

Stevie having their consent and Lindsey wishing she was in the studio with them instead, are not mutually exclusive things.

I won't bother to get into the rest (the improbability of this group of people intending to finish an album, mix it, master it, work out a track-listing, choose cover art, and rehearse for a major tour all within a 5-month time-frame, and on top of one of the members being treated for and recovering from cancer) -- since apparently that's not what this thread is about.

The bottom line is that Fleetwood Mac is not a full-time band and hasn't been in decades. Lindsey has needed his space (such as right after the SYW tour and that 10-year leave of absence after Tango), and Chris needed a 15-year hiatus. The stars will never align such that everyone is ready to do the exact same thing at the exact same time. They do pretty well at juggling, and they are better at compromising than some people are giving them credit for.

You have me inspiration for great title for their (last?) upcoming album.
