Thank you! I will never, as long as I live, understand how this song was never released on an album.

Stevie talked to BAM in 1981, and mentioned that Fleetwood Mac had recorded three of her songs: "That's Alright," "If You Were My Love," and "Smile At You."
She thought that the latter would probably be replaced, as it was "kind of a bitter song and that's really not where any of us are at right now." What's strange is that they ended up replacing both "Smile At You" and "If You Were My Love." I don't recall Stevie or anyone else in the band ever offering an explanation for replacing "IYWML."
Let's hope IYWML and SAY end up on the Mirage reissue if it ever drops.

I sincerely hope so, because the Mirage versions are my absolute favorite! I wasn't super into the SYW version of Smile at You, and it seems like IYWML is going in the Bella Donna outtake direction, which isn't bad, but it is really chill, and I like it best with a little more bite. I dig all of her songs on Mirage, but I also love bitter, angry Stevie, and she could've used a good rocker on the album. And the Mac IYWML is so awesomely groovy.

I prefer the Bella Donna version to the one from Mirage. Even the Street Angel version was on the right track (even if it was badly executed). It's a song that calls for a more relaxed, languid arrangement, IMO.

Does If You Were My Love (the Mirage version) remind anyone of another Stevie song? I don't want to say which one because I want to see if you all have the same idea that I do. :)

The end jam Always made me think of TUSK.

Interesting, but I'm thinking of a Stevie song. :)

My thoughts exactly. Although I don't mind the haunting BD version, there is just something about that fast tempo Mirage demo that put's fire into IYWML. I find the SA version to be too slow and bland.

I agree about Tusk being in the mix, but I hear slight similarities to Gate and Garden , mainly because of the tempo switches. Did I guess right?

If you Were My Love Outtake - Final
Here's another version that I think was the actual final outtake for this song off Mirage. It sounds finished and I think it was the version she's singing in the background for the Rolling Stone photo shoot for Belladonna. Yep, just pulled that up and it is. This song is playing in the background and she's holding the bird from the cover of Belladonna.
Personally, I love the FM version. Will never understand how they left off this song and Smile at You. Especially Smile at You angry version. Mirage became too pop for me and they started losing what made them great. Would love it if they ever did reissue Mirage with these outtakes. Master pieces that never saw the light of day other than to us in the Stevie/FM community.

The Mirage outtake sounds good, but it would have fit better with Tusk. The coda could have used a Fairlight CMI or other early 1980's keyboards and synthesizers.

Yep. Part of it even sounds like the song "Tusk". It'll be interesting to see if Dave/Stevie kept the faster tempo parts or not. Either way, I have a feeling this will be one of my very favorites.
THANKS to whoever posted the download. :)

I hear a lot of "Tusk" in the song too. It was a good decision to drop both songs. Apart from the poor editing and a couple questionable song choices, Mirage is a fairly accomplished recording, a sleeper hit in the catalog.

I was actually thinking of Battle of the Dragon. Listen to this version of If You Were My Love from about 3:17 on and then to Battle of the Dragon from about 3:27 on. To me they sound very very similar. Am I the only one who hears it?
And just to make this easy...
