View Full Version : Very different running orders

Does anyone else find it odd that the 2 different versions of 24KG have completely different running orders aside from just 2 extra songs. Maybe it's a marketing scheme to sell more albums and if it is, then it's working, at least on me. If I don't think watch devil is at least a 7 out of 10, I may prefer listening to the 14 track version. At first glance it seems to flow better. Of course that's complete speculation and I may be very wrong, especially not knowing what 75 percent of the album will sound like. but if I'm right, the deluxe version seems to be ending on a somewhat dull note. Maybe not dull, but slow. Blue water, cathouse blues, the very good but middle of the road single the dealer and then she loves him still which unless it improves greatly I find very dull.

I just find it very odd it's not 2 identical running orders with the 2 bonus tracks being the only variables.

My guess about the sequencing on the Deluxe Edition versus the regular version is because they decided to put it on Double Vinyl. They might have decided to sequence the Deluxe version in a way that best suits the sound quality on vinyl. So they chose to break it up into 4 sets of 4 tracks with the least amount of "running time". The less time there is on one side of a vinyl record (preferably under 25 mins) makes it sound so much better!

Just my opinion, though.

Oh ok. So it's less random then I thought initially.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet it was definitely planned out and not random at all. Clearly, the regular version is how Stevie wanted it to be sequenced. But the "vinyl" decision threw her a curve ball. I'd be curious to hear her opinion of the "Deluxe" sequencing and if she's happy with that. Who knows, though ~ she very well could have sequenced both. Although, the vinyl sequencing seems to have been done so by someone else.

I think you're correct. The 14-track playlist seems like Stevie's work (and without having heard the tracks, seems like a better sequencing). Once we get all of the run times, we may be able to tell whether the 14-track running order with two bonus tracks would fit on vinyl. Assuming our hunches are correct, this is slightly reminiscent of the differences between Stevie's original sequencing for IYD, and the one we ultimately got. Whenever I listen to IYD, I almost always prefer the original sequencing.

What exactly WAS her original sequencing for IYD? Is there a thread about this? I seem to remember seeing a list a long time ago that had the album opening with "Moonlight". Was this an original acetate track list?

Yup! Here's the thread:

The purported original track listing was:

01. Moonlight
02. For What It's Worth
03. In Your Dreams
04. New Orleans
05. Ghosts Are Gone
06. Secret Love
07. Everybody Loves You
08. Wide Saragasso Sea
09. Solder's Angel
10. Annabel Lee
11. You May Be The One
12. Italian Summer
13. Cheaper Than Free

Thanks for that! Wow, I prefer this sequencing over the "released" version. Better flow. If you cut out "Barney & Friends" (a.k.a. "Cheaper Than Free") then it's the perfect version! LOL

You could replace it with My Heart.

I still don't understand why it was relegated to bonus-track status.

Me either. I think it's better than several songs on the record.

Good idea, except instead of replacing "Barney" with "My Heart", I'd give "New Orleans" the boot and put "MH" there instead. Personal preference! :D

That is very funny and clever!

I agree, it's a better sequence of songs. If "My Heart" was somewhere in there, even better.

You know, the end of Secret Love makes so much more sense when followed by the beginning of Everybody Loves You. That ending drives me up the f'ing wall, like it was supposed to go into another song. :distress:

Well it was reported after the In Your Dreams listening party (in late 2010/early 2011?) that "Secret Love" originally ran for another minute or so, indicating that the abrupt ending was due to it being a single edit. I asked this specific question to one of this forum's members who was present at this event and they confirmed that "Secret Love" faded out. If this was correct, I'm assuming the chorus would have been repeated again. However, if this had been the case, surely Stevie would have performed it in full during the IYD tour?

Interesting. Either way, if you take out the silence at the end of Secret Love, and let it lead straight in to the synth on Everybody Loves You, it works much better (to my ear, anyway) than the transition into For What It's Worth on the released version. Of course, adding My Heart as the opener to this alternate sequence works wonders too. ;)

omg no! New Orleans is one of my faves on IYD. Delete Cheaper Than Free since it saw a release on Dave Stewart's album. the redundancy baffled me

I agree that "Cheaper Than Free" should have only been on Dave's album, not least because it is so stylistically different from everything else on IYD.
In terms of quality control, I would have removed "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Soldier's Angel", both of which are utterly atrocious. Then I would have remixed "In Your Dreams" and "Ghosts Are Gone" as both productions sound too dense to me.
"My Heart" would have remained a bonus track, nothing more.
With these alterations, you'd have a reasonably decent album.

I like the ending of "Secret Love" as it is.
What I find interesting is that "New Orleans", "Moonlight" and "Annabel Lee" are all in the same key. They could've made a continuous mix for these three songs, because they blend really, really good.
