Okay, after years of hating this song, let me say Now i love it! I just found the live version of this song AND she changed the wording from laundromat to let's go down to the river. AND it has my friend Rick Vito in it! Go Stevie! I just might have to pull out Street Angel again!
Anyone else like this song?

I regret not attending any show on the Street Angel tour. Stevie was on fire! The stage decor/set up was one of the most elaborate and ornate that she's ever had . And is one one of her best and unusual band set ups, with the drummer and percussionist featured in middle, side by side. Laurie sat this one out. Who was Sharon with? I can't remember their names...Sara something and? (I had been out drinking wine with a friend and I'm a little tipsy and tired!)
She only included four new songs in the original set, then she inexplicably dropped Dockland (for Rooms on Fire, I think) I wish she would have performed more songs from the album. Her voice and the band would have done them justice. At least we got Rose Garden on the Enchanted tour.

Lori was busy being a new mom, so Sharon was paired up with Sara Fleetwood and Liza Jane Edwards, who was Stevie's make up artist during the Bella Donna/Wild Heart years.

Is she the one who was doing her makeup in that awesome "fly on the wall" Wild Heart clip on YouTube?

Jones Beach is possibly my favourite show on the SA tour. Killer version of "How Still My Love" and it was before they slowed "Edge" right down so it has loads of energy and vocally, she sounds fantastic.

I was just listening to Betsy Cook's original 1989 version of "Docklands" (co-written with producer Trevor Horn). Aside from a few minor changes in the words, I was shocked at how much was changed towards the end.
In the middle part,
"In the docklands where I was born..."
Where Stevie sings, "People keep pushing to and fro"
Betsy instead sings, "People keep building stone by stone..." VERY different!!
Then, Stevie sings the GREAT "I-I-I-I beg of you!!!" while Betsy sings something like, "I don't know why I stay..." nothing like Stevie's words at all.
THEN, the final verse by Betsy:
"Mama knows, but she'll never know
All the things that happen in me...
Keep your head up
Walk by the water
Push the river down to the sea..."
Huh??? Stevie sings a completely different verse!!!!
"I miss you more than I thought I could
I need you more than you know
I was there when they took you away from me
I'll be there when they let you go..." Did STEVIE write this??????
So, since Betsy's the writer, did Stevie concoct her own lyrics for the song? Why no "Extra Lyrics by Stevie Nicks" credit? the WHOLE "I beg of you" comes from Stevie's recording, not Betsy's.
Did Betsy & Trevor whip up some new lyrics for Stevie in 1992? I doubt it. But "Seven Wonders" and "If I Were You" got credits for Stevie's contributions, but not "Docklands" (and "Some Become Strangers").
Just a weird observation...
Found this from a thread a long time ago, it was written by Mike Bise.
I wonder if stevie did make new lyrics up

It appears that Stevie took liberties to modify the original lyrics to put her own stamp on it -- changing some of the words, editing some passages out, adding a few of her own -- but didn't credit herself, and left the original song credits to the writers Trevor Horn and Betsy Cook.

Well I don't believe any of these lyrics are Stevie's. This song was written by Betsy Cook and Trevor Horn but you have to remember, this song first came out in 1988 by the Mint Juleps. And surprisingly enough Betsy Cook was in the studio as a vocal arranger and musician while Trevor Horn produced it. Betsy didn't actually release this song herself until 1992. I have the version the Mint Juleps released and here are their lyrics.
And in the docklands
where I was born
people keep buiding stone by stone
everybody's pushing trying to make it happen
I miss you more than I thought I could
I need you more than you know
I was there when they took you away from me
I'll be there when they let you go.
Maybe Betsy encouraged the Mint Juleps to change the lyrics? Who knows. I know I really like their version of this song and I like Stevie's also.

Thanks WelcomeChris for that insightful observation.
Madeline, I had no idea someone else had done this song. I will definitely be checking out the Mint Juleps version as well as Betsy's.

I just sampled the Mint Juleps cover of Docklands. It seems they modified the original to make it their own, I don't imagine that the original writer encouraged them to change the lyrics. For what reason?
It's not uncommon for artists to cover songs and reinterpret them; to tinker with the arrangement and lyrics to make it unique for them.It seems Stevie referenced and tinkered with the Mint Juleps version, distinguishing her version from both the original version and the Mint Juleps version.
Now, knowing the origins of the song, I have a better appreciation for it, and glad I had a reason to employ the word "tinkered.";)

I've always liked this one...there's something mysterious about it that fit Stevie's voice/style.
I never knew that someone else recorded this song! Here is a link to hear Betsy Cook's version on Utube

And just a shout-out to Betsy, who I adore, she also wrote the wonderful Love is the Grove (made famous by Cher) and released it on the same album as Docklands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-78Q-NTQo Both songs are favourites of mine, I always thought the Stevie version of Docklands was a bit of an awkward fit, but I don't dislike it.

Thanks! I knew who they were, but I was having a brain fart; I'm often on The Ledge when I'm awake at 3.oo am, suffering from insomnia, like now!
