Since the first single has now been released in Australia and the UK, and will be released in the US in a few hours, I'm curious as to people's opinions of the finished track.
Personally, I think it's been decently produced, it's nothing revolutionary, but we were never going to get that with this album. It does seem to be quite low quality in places - you can hear the limitations of the format.
I also feel as though her voice seems considerably 'thinner' on this release, although this likely is due to her age.

It's very nice. Of course I haven't heard the whole thing yet but my impression so far is that it stays true to the demo (which is one of my favorites). It's very "first-single-Stevie-Nicks"--meaning safe. Her voice sounds good though not as strong as on the "In Your Dreams" album. I wish they had added a few more embellishments like they did with "Secret Love" but I'm sure some will be fine that they didn't because overproduction seemed to be some people's complaints for that album. Not mine though. :D These things always grow more and more on me and I already like it.
Bottom line: I like it and I'm super thankful! I can't wait to buy it and pre-order the album in all of it's formats!

It sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone because it was. The person who uploaded it could only record from the iTunes "preview" snippet and used his phone to do so.
The actual version will be much better quality.

I don't think this sounds "Tusk-esque" at all. I think it resembles the Heartbreakers version from the "Bella Donna" sessions far more.
She's sounding her age...and I LIKE THAT! The harmonies are always flawless and the production is great. Definitely got that "Nashville" sound.
That being said, it's a good song but I'm not as excited about it as a lead single (or a single at all) more than I was when "Secret Love" was released.

I know what you mean, it does sound very 'Heartbreakers-esque'. And yes, her harmonies with 'The Girls' are a real highlight of the track.

I think the production is great. But it was more or less finished in the versions we've heard before, so the other demos that were less polished may impress more. I'm most looking forward to "All the Beautiful Worlds," one of my favorite demos of all time. Her voice was pretty ragged at that point, so I think her current voice should be able to handle it pretty well.

Really love the production and arrangement here, but that vocal - oy.
I cringe most at the way she strains to go up high on "and my wine…" in the second verse. It just sounds like a scream? I suppose I have in mind her velvety falsetto from 1981, and that's not fair. (Or isn't it? We heard her do falsetto on IYD a few times…)
On the plus side, I like the extra low note she adds to "I gave it all ouuu-out" the second or third time around. Very nice, and suits her current voice well.
This reminds me how hard it'll be to let go of my memory of her original, 30-year-old vocals on many of these songs!

Agreed. And as to the Dealer, I listened to the Tusk demo again, and frankly, her voice sounds strained and thin. I far prefer the new (released!) version. Loving it.

It is a certain type of Stevie song, certainly not one I would have chosen. It sounds, well, boring. And quite casually produced and sung. A skip-over for me. But let's see how the rest sound. I am not inclined to pre-order based on this clip.

Her vocal really warms up later in the song. Overall, I like it!
It might have been nice to have layered her the vocals and harmonies throughout the entire song. It would lend some punchiness and give it that 7" mix quality that is so great about single mixes.

That's more the trick, I think. Her voice is different now, but I don't think she's straining so much as just singing differently. There's a lot of complexity to her voice in this song, she sounds more soulful and in control to me than she has in about 30 years. I've been listening to this intermittently between songs on The Wild Heart and it stands, as far as I'm concerned. I really #%&*ing love this song. :blob2:

Hmmm. I suppose I'm biased since I loved the demo versions too. But it doesn't bore me at all. I always felt that, of all the outtakes and reel songs, this one really should have been on Bella Donna, and it's absence (right between Glitter and Seventeen) seems glaringly obvious to me.
Edit: I felt the same way about Belle Fleur not being on The Wild Heart

Just got it off Amazon..it sounds pretty much the way I expected it to when I predicted multiple times on here that it would be the first single.:oI actually like her vocals on this one as well as the production which feels more organic than much of IYD IMO.I doubt it will be my favorite on the album but it is a nice classic sounding California rock song.

It is pretty flat isn't it. Part of the problem with the vocals is the "who cares?" production. I especially dislike the instrumentation and the grating harmonies. It is not an interesting song. No Christian (Spinning Wheel) or Forest Of the Black Roses!! :(
I'm more or less happy to have a new track of sorts, I'd be happy if she farted into a microphone intermittently for 4 and a half minutes :]
All seriousness aside it's solid. Seems like perhaps, here at least, they've tried to stay true to the demo in vibe and tune and am expecting that now for majority of the album.
The only way this project could be a disappointment to me would be if she fails miserably at the end of Twisted.. The vers. from the movie soundtrack with Lindsey at the end.. She needs to smash it

I could never stand that sound. Everything about it makes me cringe. Funny how my favourite singer songwriter is also my least favourite. She probably went into this project saying she wanted to stick with the original sounds of the demos. And this first snippet falls as flat as the original.

Guys, so I gotta say: I listened to The Dealer several times as soon as I got up this morning. And I absolutely love it. I know some people have said that Stevie's voice sounds thin, but it sounds great to me - I think the main difference here is that the production is a bit more stripped down than we're used to.
I think the main challenge for all of us is to listen to all of these songs fresh and with a new set of ears (so to speak), rather than comparing them to the demos we're used to. Cannot wait to hear the rest of this album. :blob2:

My only complaint about the vocal is that it is too forward in the mix. I think if they had blended the vocal more into the middle and further down in the mix, with a little more echo chamber, it would have been perfect. Also wouldnt have minded a tad more of The Girls in the mix for the harmony spots.
Alas. I like it. It is "Classic Stevie Nicks" and brings back the SOUND of Bella Donna. I Love the organic nature of it. Real instruments. Real players. It sounds like Classic Rock. Something we have not heard from her since....The Wild Heart album

Alas. I like it. It is "Classic Stevie Nicks" and brings back the SOUND of Bella Donna. I Love the organic nature of it. Real instruments. Real players. It sounds like Classic Rock. Something we have not heard from her since....The Wild Heart album
That is why I love this -- it is Classic Stevie Nicks, never thought I would say that again.
Organic is a great word for this.

Btw I love the "myyy wiiiine" part. Doesn't sound strained or nasal to me at all.
Same here, and I tried, because other people brought it up a couple times, and I even tried again this morning, for the sake of making sure I'm not being an idiot, lol. I still don't hear anything wrong with it.

I felt the same way. Actually, you can play it right along with The Wild Heart and it totally works. I never thought I'd feel like I was listening to "that Stevie" again, and I'm over the moon right now. :blob2:

This is exactly how I felt when I heard it. It takes a complete turn away from the overproduction of some of her other material. I think someone mentioned organic, and that is so true. :D

The audio quality of the lyric video is quite bad too, isn' it?
And I noticed that some of her lines sound clearer than others as if you could tell that they are from different takes. Did anyone else notice that, too?
For example at 3:16 the line "You just almost stay here" is much clearer than the others.

Right? How many missed opportunities have there been? The Bella Donna sessions are some of the greatest unreleased tracks ever. They could have put
Stop Draggin, Leather and Lace and Edge back on the radio with a 30 year re release and included the outtakes. Some of her outtakes are hits! I just don't get it sometimes. Mick is right. It's the poorly run franchise in rock and roll history.

I agree. But I think the problem is she she doesn't have the masters anymore, so she wouldn't be able to do that without re-recording them anyway. On the upside, the alternative to this release was basically a 20th anniversary edition of Street Angel. I'll take this, please. LOL.

I've said it before that there should have been a 30th "Bella Donna" re-release...Re-master the record and if possible remix songs like "Leather and Lace" "The Highwayman" "After The Glitter fades" for a slightly modern country sound and she could have had some cross-over success...

I'm cool with Stevie's lower register now. That wasn't always the case. I think we all think about what could have been if Stevie had taken better care of her voice. Her voice is clearly not as versatile as it used to be, where it could effortlessly hit the sweet spot. But she can still turn out a good vocal when she really works at. I'm sure the vocal coach has helped her get the most of what she has left.

I'm doing the same thing at work today with the new version, enjoying the fuller instrumentation of the update. The more I listen, the more I like the new vocal.
To me, this is just a great song. And a great choice for a first single. I hope rock radio goes for it in a big way.

I never thought The Dealer was that catchy of a demo, and still don't think it's that catchy of a single. However, I like the Bella Donna-era vibe. Hell, they even included keyboards and Petty-sound to boot! A little disappointed with the vocals. In the beginning of the song, she sounds like she's close to "bottoming out" vocally a few times (i.e, Destiny and Destiny Rules), but thankfully doesn't and gains strength toward the end. I know she can nail killer vocals still, but must not have had the time. Overall, I think it's a decent version. Hoping there are stronger cuts.

Am I the only person IN ABSOLUTE TERROR imagining Stevie doing card-dealing pantomimes during her performances of this song on the talk show circuit?!
Otherwise, I think it's a fine song. It seems to be about Lindsey. The ending switch up is rousing. The chorus is catchy. The harmonies are sweet. The guitar is safe.
I probably prefer it to Secret Love, maybe, possibly, but don't think much of either as lead singles.
Still, In Your Dreams was a masterpiece so I'm hopeful for some inspired pieces on this opus.

[Thanks. Look at Waddy getting that producer credit!]
By Jon Blistein | August 5, 2014 Rolling Stone
Stevie Nicks has handed out "The Dealer," the first track from her upcoming solo album, 24 Karat Gold — Songs From the Vault. The upcoming album stands as the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman's first LP since 2011's In Your Dreams.
The swinging, piano-driven cut comes complete with a lyric video and finds Nicks delivering an ode to misplaced love, owning mistakes and the catharsis that comes from reconciling the two. "I was the mistress of my fate, I was the card shark / If I'd've looked a little ahead, I would've run away," Nicks belts during chorus, her velveteen voice taking on a wizened-with-age quality that's perfectly belied by the line's winking conclusion: "If I'd really known you then / You'd've had to watch out."
Nicks initially wrote and recorded "The Dealer" with Fleetwood Mac in the late Seventies when the band was working on their 1979 album, Tusk. A leaked copy of the original demo has been floating around for some time, and as Nicks said in the press release announcing 24 Karat Gold, it was bootlegs like this that inspired her to reimagine tracks from her back catalog that never saw an official release.
Produced by Nicks, Dave Stewart and guitarist Waddy Wachtel, 24 Karat Gold will see release on October 7th via Warner Bros., though vinyl lovers will be able to pick up a limited edition double LP a week earlier starting September 29th (pre-orders begin today, August 5th). The album artwork will also feature never-before-seen Polaroids taken by Nicks from throughout her career, while the deluxe photo book CD boasts 48-pages of pictures from her private collection, as well as two bonus tracks. Nicks will also be previewing more cuts from 24 Karat Gold on her new Instagram account in the lead-up to the LP's release.
Following 24 Karat Gold's release, Nicks will embark on yet another massive tour with Fleetwood Mac, this one reuniting the group with keyboardist and singer Christine McVie, who left the band in 1998. The On With the Show tour kicks off on Tuesday, September 30th in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Target Center and wraps up 34 shows later on December 20th at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa Bay, Florida.

I admit I'm slightly surprised they chose this one for the first released single. Based on the snippets Dave threw out of I Don't Care, Starshine, and 24K Gold, I think they're far more fun vocally. That said, the production on this is right, vocals are fine for me..... especially the harmonies....... really happy she kept it it old school, and seems to be getting back to the Stevie I know and love. TISL was ok but Street Angel andIn Your Dreams did nothing for me. I'm faaaaaar more excited for 24K Gold.

I've listened to the official dealer more in one day then all ofits demo versions combined the last 10 years.
It's odd that I like the finished version so much more when it's probably the truest to any vault song she's released ever, except maybe sorcerer. But I love her more mature vocal on this. And the instrumentation is much better. Particularly this little piano riff at exactly 29 seconds in. We haven't heard piano so prominent in Stevie's music for years.

I'm very excited for the album as well and even though I predicted that The Dealer would be the first single a week before it happened I don't feel that it will be the most interesting song on the album .Stevie has played it "safe " on her first singles for years now.I do like The Dealer very much however .It seems that the album will be unapologetically classic rock and if this single is a harbinger for the album I think that we are all in for a sonic experience not really heard since Stevie's halcyon solo days of the early 1980s.

I think Stevie's album is going to get more media buzz than we've seen in a long time. This time planets have aligned in her favor. This album may be a surprise hit that hearkens back to her solo heydays circa 1981-1985.
I'm really happy that in these early twilight years of her career, Stevie is stepping it up, and getting the recognition she deserves. This album has a built-in, interesting history, and people are responding to it. It has the potential to be a pivotal and significant part of Stevie's legacy. Again, much thanks to Dave Stewart for motivating her and believing in her.

And who transcribed the lyrics? "If I'd **a** looked a little ahead, I'd **a** run away?"

I can't believe how amateurishly done this so-called video is. Seriously, a 13 year old could have done this with the free version of Windows MovieMaker that comes with your PC (could have done it better, actually... or should I say "could a"). It's embarrassingly bad. Was this done in ten minutes by a grammatically-challenged intern right before the song's release?
However, let me balance my disappointment with it by saying that I am delighted she allowed the song to be put on YouTube officially instead of desperately having fanvids of it taken down right and left. So many legacy artists rail against YouTube and Google as if they were tools of the devil. I am very pleasantly surprised that Stevie has stepped away from her "evil internet" stance to do this. A crap video is better than no video, and hopefully a real one will eventually be made.

 Love it! The hyper critical analysis is really grating. Instead of being grateful for new music, and accepting it for what it is, it's all about "me, me and me and what I wanted." All of Stevie's albums, like all albums ever made, have songs we prefer over others. Get over yourself Grumpy Cats.

Dude I don't expect to like everything that my favourite singers/bands release. It's an opinion. My opinion is that The Dealer is boring. It hasn't got me excited for her album. What's the biggy? Sensitive much?!
you're entitled to your opinion...as is everyone else on this board. And while I'm thrilled to have a new solo album from Stevie, I gotta admit I'm not crazy about The Dealer as a song. I don't hate it..I just don't think it's a great song. I think, for me, the lyrics have something to do with it. BUT I have been humming it all day so there you go.

I'm glad that it's getting good press - I think it's a great song (actually, I also think it's far superior to the demo at this point). I'm really hopeful about the record now - I think it's going to be great, possibly my favorite.

I like The Dealer. I think Mistress of my Fate would be a more "Stevie" title, but I've always thought it was a great, catchy song. I will say though that I think a better vocal could have been coaxed out of her. It strikes me as a very off-the-cuff take, whereas I think she's capable of a vocal where she doesn't have those somewhat shrill, strained moments.

This video is fine with me because it begs the question. If this is the official Dealer video then what did they film the last week?
Also I don't blame Stevie for not wanting to spend a gazillion dollars on a video these days. Hell, MTV and VH1 done't even play them these days. Where would we even see it?

I am with GDW on this. I am very underwhelmed by The Dealer and I am not going to buy the album until I hear a bit more. I may just buy individual songs online instead of the whole thing. I love Stevie but I dislike this particular song and its arrangement and production. And an album loaded with stuff like that is not worth my hard earned money at this point.

I really like this song. It's meaningful and the lyrics actually make sense. She also manages to get in the mystical in a good way. It's California rock from the late 70s and early 80s. This would fit snuggly on her greatest hits. The song is totally Bella Donna in my opinion. If they can turn the demo into this, I have hope for the album.
Stevie's aged voice makes this song more meaningful. That being said, her voice sounds strained, like she is barely getting there. The part where she sings "and my wine" is truly cringe-worthy.
If she can sing Italian Summer, then she shouldn't struggle with this. I know she had to record 16 tracks in two weeks and there was no time to rest her voice. It doesn't feel like they went back and redid the vocals after they laid down all the tracks. She is everywhere so maybe she never had enough time.Still, she could sing this song a lot better than this. The music is really good but it could of been a little sharper.
Still, this song is a gem. I don't understand why some people are calling it boring. Must not be listening to the words.

She belts out the "my wine" line, but sounds totally confident and strong doing it.

Imo there are much more strained vocals in her music from 2000 until now.

Tbh, I hope the entire rest of the album has vocals comparable to The Dealer, I think she sound light years better than anything else she's done recently. For one, I think she sounds like herself for the first time in forever. For two, it still doesn't sound thin or strained to me (actually, when I played it today, I thought she sounded relaxed and confident, certainly more nuanced and in control than anything on IYD, SYW, or TISL). Official lyric videos are routinely used & released on YouTube by many top selling artists before the official filmed artist video is ready and released. And yes, they are all generic and basic. It's the record companys & artists circumvent to hamper fan-made videos poping up all over YouTube. Anyone remember that as soon as "Secret Love" was available for instant download with every pre-order of IYD through WB all the way back on January, 13th 2011 that a fan YouTubed SL immediately under his YT subscriber name - userfriendlynewmodel.
Warners (& Stevie's team) actually were on the ball this time around, comparatively speaking against IYD pre-promotion. I was very impressed. They released the cover art, tracklist, pre-order info AND "official lyric video" of The Dealer - which also doubly serves cross-promotion as another direct link to 24 Karat's pre-order. This all, in addition to fully utilizing Stevie's FB account & setting up an official Instagram! Who would've thought we'd see all this cross-promotion synchronized so well! And, every new write-up of Stevie new single, yesterday & today, contained her "lyric video" link. This is the best advance promotion Stevie has had since TISL was released!
On top of all this, We will be getting the official filmed video released @in a couple of weeks - way in advance of 24 Karat Golds release date. Even TISL & IYD barely released their 1st single videos @ a week before their respective release dates.

The Dealer is a good song and I like it and I'm happy with it, but I also feel she sings it sort of like the throw-away tune it has been all these years, and not at all like a song that she loves and is proud of and filled with emotions over. Just my ears, though.

What's interesting is that Tom Petty's new album is number 1 on Billboard's top 200 this week, which is his first number 1 ever and his biggest selling album in years. Eric Clapton's new album is number 2, and his biggest seller in years according to Billboard. A week or two ago, "Weird Al" had his first number 1 on Billboard and the first number 1 comedic album in decades (that's pretty major for a dude who was popular in the 1980's). My point is that every so many years "nostalgia" becomes big whether on TV, in movies, or in music. This may be a current trend that could positively effect the sales of Stevie's and FM's new music. There may be surprises in store!

I agree with this as well .In fact I really like her vocals on the 3 snippets we have heard also.Sure she may not sound as polished as some of the IYD tracks but so far the 24K songs sound more comfortable and "live" I don't even get the complaints about the "my wine" part it sounds fine to me:shrug:

Don't get me wrong, I like IYD quite a bit too. My feeling is that she's gotten better with each record. But there seems to be a marked return to Bella Donna quality in the context of style, control and power. Her range is lower and huskier, but I think it sounds great. Also yeah, that closing note on Italian Summer is f'ing stellar.

As far as the vocals go ..
I'm happy .
I think the fact that she was pushed to lay down vocals for 18 songs in 2 weeks means we are getting a more "raw " Stevie (warts and all )
Take a song like Gypsy or Sara ..I would be willing to bet those vocals took months to capture
What we have here is fun bare bones production
A sound that many of us have long waited for .
I'm sure her new Fleetwood Mac songs will be super glossy
And if I'm going to predict further I'm convinced the songs will be brand new,
She's not going to come to that party with any more vault songs.

this is the only bad review I saw
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl
Stevie Nicks' new single isn't so hot: Was it better off a bootleg?
Legendary songbird Stevie Nicks released her new single, "The Dealer," today. The track is the lead single off her upcoming album, 24 Karat Gold, and with it comes a lyric video complete with a soft-focus old photo of the singer. The song was previously recorded in 1979, while Fleetwood Mac was working on their album, Tusk. "The Dealer" didn't make the cut for that album, but a leaked demo has occasionally popped up among fans. We'd love to say Stevie Nicks can do no wrong in our eyes, but in the case of "The Dealer," we think some things might have been better left in the '70s.
Nicks was about 34 when the song was originally recorded and it seems as if she still had a bit of maturing to do with her songwriting. The concept is simple enough: Nicks is coming to terms with past transgressions and unrequited love. Heavy stuff, sure. However, the lyricism is a little immature. We can appreciate that it was written when she was considerably younger, but by mid-30 and well into her career, we expect more. With lines like, "But, you'll just almost stay here, I'll just almost hold you," the lyrics, at some points, seem more like Nicks was grasping for syllables more than good song content.
Furthermore, there's not much musical growth. In a way, it makes sense that Nicks' music would still sound so strikingly similar to everything she's released in the past. Again, this song was written long ago, as are all the other songs on the album. However, she could have used this chance to reboot them with slightly more modern music. Instead, the song still sounds exactly like it came from 1979 — you know, when it was a demo that didn't make the cut for Tusk. This, of course, will appeal to the vast majority of her longtime fans. However, it leaves us underwhelmed.

So as is often the case with some of Stevie's songs, I've been listening to The Dealer repeatedly and I'm really loving it now! I think I just had to give the song a chance, as I didn't like the demo initially and never really bothered with it again. It IS a catchy little song but what makes it for me is the organic and earthy sound of the production, especially the organ part (Hammond, B3??). Anyway, it is worlds away in terms of production from IYD and while I love IYD, this is definitely a step back in time for Stevie as far as sound goes. And I'm starting to love her vocal too. It sounds far more laid back and unrehearsed than many of her recent songs. The Dealer is pulling me in, and I love it! :]

I think that the reason the vocal sounds jarring for some people is that she had so little time to make this album. ON IYD I think they had months to do vocals. I bet with 24KG they used whatever happened in Nashville and then the two other sessions we heard about in LA and then back in Nashville again. If Stevie's voice was horse or sore or strained they just had to deal with it, move on, and get it done. There was no time to say "well we will try again in a month". This album will have a MUCH more RAW sound than IYD did. I know some people did not like IYD just for that very reason, "overproduced" was the biggest complaint from the Complainers. Well, they go their wish! Here is a Stevie Album that is RAW, ORGANIC and 100% non-overproduced. It was almost all LIVE in the studio with sparingly done overdubs. Bella Donna was done much the same way, live music with live vocals, but then they worked on the vocals for MONTHS with overdubs. After 32 years we have come full circle with the instrumentation, but only this time less time was spent on the vocals. I am ok with this because this album will prove that you do not need to overthink an album.
NOW... I hope that Fleetwood Mac sees how good LIVE and ORGANIC sounds so that the new FM album has that sound from The White Album through Mirage.

Her voice sounds great to me. But I don't think she would have had a hard time physically by recording in only two weeks. She is a live singer that performs night after night. I give her more credit.

Stevie Nicks' new single isn't so hot: Was it better off a bootleg?
Yes, it was better off as a bootleg.
A lot of people here have said that All The Beautiful Worlds is a favorite, and that the 'demo' is pretty much done, and there seems to be some concern that the new version won't hold up to the original. Well, I feel the same way about The Dealer.
While I'm pleased that it's included on 24 Karat Gold, personally the Bella Donna version, totally completed, was perfect and left absolutely no room for improvement.
Obviously, not everyone agrees. Much like Julia, however, The Dealer that was excluded from Bella Donna is as good as it ever was, to me.
But what is, is what is, and Stevie re-recorded The Dealer. It's all good. I can still listen to the older versions anytime I please, and the fact is, I'll probably play 24 Karat Gold a thousand times and love The Dealer every time I hear it.

Plus, as much as we hardcores enjoy listening to the demos, you must remember that the vast majority of fans have never heard these songs, and never would hear them if they weren't released. I think it's wonderful that she's giving these songs a chance to be heard all over the world, not just by a relatively small group of people.
Even if "The Dealer" were "perfect" as it was (which is debatable), how many people would ever get to hear that "perfect" version? Better to release a version that's a bit less perfect but that can be enjoyed by all than to relegate a quality song to obscurity.

I'm going to disagree with you. That demo fealt small. This is much better. I feel this is the best single she has released since the 1980s. Great lyrics and sounds complete. The song is addictive. Really good for a 66 year old and done in record time.
If people like the demo, well they can always go listen to the demos.

This is the reason I was so disappointed by the lack of "Julia." From the moment I first heard it in 2001, I was crazy about it -- and I've wanted every Stevie fan to hear it. And while, for my tastes, Stevie could never improve upon Take 5, I still want it to be re-recorded and released out into the world. It's just too good of a song, IMO, to languish in the vault.
So, yes, there may be a few moments throughout the album where we think, "Oh, I preferred the way she sang that originally," or "the arrangement was so much stronger on the 1982 outtake," but it's going to be so fantastic to finally have these definitive versions.
Meanwhile, regarding "The Dealer," I've never been able to find one particular take of that song that I thought was perfect. I enjoy all of them, don't get me wrong -- but each of them just fell slightly short for me in some way or another. This new version "feels" just right. Vocally, instrumentally, and production-wise. I'm thrilled with it. And for those who aren't, I hope there are plenty of other songs on the album that they will be thrilled with.

Stevie Nicks Channels the 1970s in Her New Single, “The Dealer”
I get a little nervous when an artist whose older work I favor comes out with a new album. But I take heart in the fact that most of the songs on Stevie Nicks’ forthcoming album, 24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault, were written between 1969 and 1987, with a couple penned in the mid-’90s. And with “The Dealer” she delivers a track that would have been at home on 1983’s Wild Heart or even Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (1977).*
Musically speaking, “The Dealer” is something like a time capsule that Nicks could have planted decades ago—but the lyrics seem to come from a wiser woman taking stock and looking back: “It was my fault, my move, and my wine/ I see the sun now, and it still shines.” Her voice has a gravelly quality now that matches the sentiment.

Noisy Vice, August 5, 2014
http://noisey.vice.com/blog/stevie-nicks-the-dealer-stream
America is a country constantly in flux, and American music is an ever-shifting behemoth, always looking for the next drop. But amid the change, there are certain things that remain timeless: liberty, love, a certain hustle, a sense of destiny, and, perhaps most of all, the golden voice and songwriting talents of Stevie Nicks, American hero.
Right now, it's Tuesday afternoon in 2014, but it might as well be a sun-glazed day in the late 70s, and we might as well be riding around in cars that take too much gas in a world that looks like a Valencia filter. Stevie Nicks just released a new song, "The Dealer," on which she quite literally escapes time. It's off her new album, 24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault, which is out October 9 and of which Stevie Nicks, via her website, says: "Each song is a love story... They represent my life, the secrets, the broken hearts. These songs are the memories - the 24 karat gold rings in the blue box. These songs are for you."
Naturally, the song, like the polaroid in its accompanying lyric video, comes across like so many unearthed memories, and your tears might come spilling out like so many decades of pent-up sadness. "I was the mistress of my fate," Stevie croons sadly, knowingly, in the way that only Stevie Nicks can croon about heartbreak: "If I'd a looked a little ahead/I'd a run away." "I'll be the passion/You be the play," she adds later, poetically. "I'll just almost hold you/You'll just almost stay here." Yeah, it's beautiful. Yeah, we might as well be standing in front of a corner store that looks like a movie set listening to this float toward us as it plays out of our car's AM radio. Yeah, we love Stevie Nicks.

It's now received over 200,000 views. That's a third of the views that Secret Love has had and that had a lot of radio play and a proper music video. Stevie appears to be more popular than ever.

That's great news. Everyone who knows something about Stevie Nicks is intrigued by this "songs from the vault" concept, probably more than they were about IYD. And it's a clever bit of marketing - simple lyric video with Stevie's handwriting and an old polaroid. I think people are appreciating the song much more with this video, as there is an immediate focus on the lyrics . How many Stevie lyric fan video's are out there, but this one is from Stevie herself (well her marketing people)

I wonder if there are different edits and mixes floating about. Possible we will get an extended version? Radio edits?
Whilst I'm entirely respectful of differing opinions, I gotta say I can't get over the nit-picking regarding Stevie's vocal on "The Dealer". People seem to be forgetting that the album was recorded in just a few weeks and that it would seem the emphasis was on capturing an organic, essentially live sound. For so many years, fans have complained about Stevie being over-produced (even as recently as the In Your Dreams album) and now it seems we're getting an unadorned recording that is not steeped in gloss and heavy-handedness.
From my perspective, Stevie's vocal on the 2014 version of "The Dealer" is soulful and heart-felt - qualities we should be embracing. I'm not seeking perfection, but I do want something authentic and I think she's delivered on this occasion.
I think the team of Stevie, Dave and Waddy is a superb one. I have high hopes for many of the songs on this upcoming album.

It could of been produced a little better and she could of given a better vocal, however, this is her best single since the 80s. I can't stop listening to it. Yes! When I was listening, I almost felt like it was the Classic Rock channel. I agree with the production, because someone mentioned the mixing, and on the radio (James tell me if you agree) the girls' voices were slightly diminished. However that could be to my sub-par car speakers! :p

For a long time, I had a hard time listening to anything post Street Angel, because I refused to let go of "classic Stevie." I guess if I didn't listen to her current voice, it would magically go back to how it was. But it won't, and I am happy for that. This is really the first song that I have listened to from 21st-century-Stevie on repeat, because to me it has the beautiful imperfections that I appreciate about the older demos. So though the song is not perfect vocally, that is what gives it the depth and magic of a Stevie song. For me, that is what music is about, to feel the music, not so much nit-pick it to the point you can't enjoy it.
But that's just my opinion.

We are so used to listing to this song with her 1981 voice. Today I was listening to a mix of songs on my iPhone and Street Angel's Blue Denim came on, THEN The Dealer. They blended well together, and The Dealer even sounded better to me and more ALIVE than Blue Denim.
If you listen, Stevie's voice has not changed ALL that much from The Other Side of the Mirror, and Street Angel and Timespace era. There was a point in the late 90's when she stopped smoking and could still hit higher notes when it was "better", but other than some loss of her upper notes she still sounds MOSTLY the same as she has since the late 90's.
It is only when doing a direct comparison between 1981 Stevie The Dealer and 2014 The Dealer that people are having trouble. If we had NEVER heard the demos of The Dealer, I am sure the Grumpycat Ledgies would be all "OMG I LOVE THIS SONG! IT IS SO HAPPY BOUNCY AND CLASsic STEVIE".
You can try the same thing. Listen to the Accapela version of Rooms on Fire from Youtube... and then listen to 2014 The Dealer. Despite a little loss of range her voice is basically the same .

It's just too good of a song, IMO, to languish in the vault.
.
I was never one for Stevie's demos. I hae only listened to a handful, so this album is particularly exciting to me because I have never heard most of these songs.
I have however listened to Julia and it is just INFECTIOUS. It's near perfect. That simple piano intro, with the build up of instruments and vocals. I love the version with the rocking ending...But I guess we're lucky to have it. I agree though that every Stevie fan needs to hear this song!

Stevie Nicks - The Dealer August 8, 2014

There are few more recognisable voices in rock and pop than that of iconic Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks. The influence of Fleetwood Mac is perhaps stronger than ever in 2014 with acts like Haim in thrall to the bands timeless charms. It’s a perfect time, then, for the singer to re-emerge with a new song that instantly recalls Nicks and the band’s golden age. ‘The Dealer’s’ sense of familiarity shouldn’t be such a surprise as the song is a contemporary recording of a track demo’d for Fleetwood Mac’s 1979 LP ‘Tusk’, what makes it special though is the extra emotion in her voice; it’s an older, wiser and reflective Nicks as she looks back on her past with a feeling of misty eyed catharsis. Added to the pristine piano and organ swing of wide eyed Californian rock dreams it makes for a supremely gorgeous reminder of the talents of an unequivocally legendary performer. (Martyn Young)

All of these posts make me feel much better, because I've listened to this song many more times than I care to admit. I love it, just love it. In fact, I prefer it over the demos. Stevie's vocal is great - strong, confident, and I don't find it to be thin at all. It is raw, however, and I like that. Just listen to the raw vocals from any period since the late '80s, and her voice has changed very little - and if anything has improved.
The production is great - although as others have said, I would prefer for the girls to be a bit more prominent in the mix. And I wouldn't have minded her ending with "..I feel the sun now, and it still shines."
Just played The Dealer a couple of times to my husband,( who likes Fleetwood Mac a lot , but not particularly a Stevie fan)
"mmmm" says he." That woman should make a country music LP"
I agree what do others think?
Whenever I play a modern-Stevie song, people's reaction to it is consistently that her voice sounds "country". I find it interesting. I mean, it's a perfectly fine thing to sound like a country singer, I've just never been able to pinpoint why. But people say it quite a lot.
Personally, if Stevie wanted to go in that direction a little further, I'd be completely on board. It'd work beautifully.

I'm not a huge country fan, but I agree that going in that direction a bit could work really for Stevie. It would not be a huge stylistic departure, yet it would be something refreshing. It also wouldn't seem forced or like she's following a trend, since Stevie's had a country-tinge to many of her songs since the very beginning of her career.

That single with Lady Antebellum is about as country as I care for her to get. I don't mind her doing country-tinged work, but I like her as rock & pop.
I do not need an entire album of Too Far From Texas.
