View Full Version : Which Stevie Written Songs Are Not About a Love Relationship?
Bandon

As we all know, most of Stevie's songs were written about love relationships (Mostly between a man and a woman). I'm trying to determine which of the songs she has written are about other topics. I don't think there are many. I do realize, it's about perspective. Some that come to mind are:
Sisters of the Moon?
Blue Lamp
Julia
Sister Honey (One-sided love)
Jane
Illume
Soldiers Angel
Are there others?
Oh this is fun!
...
And challenging.
Italian Summer
Touched by an Angel
Doing the Best that I Can
Street Angel
Rhiannon

Hey Dex,
I hadn't thought about Italian Summer, Touched by an Angel and Doing the Best that I Can. You're good.! Rhiannon is a tough one though. Are you sure about Street Angel?
I picked Street Angel at first but looked back at the lyrics. She writes, " I know that you love me...
And that you always will
You just stand outside and call to me...
My sweet street angel"
Does that count? It is challenging..isn't it? What do you think?
The short answer is "No". I'm not sure about SA at all.
It is difficult because I don't think Stevie songs are ever really about one literal thing. To me Street Angel has never felt like it was about a romance, but you're right about the lyrics of course, so *shrugs*. It's a fair call to leave it off.
New Orleans though! See? I thought've another one! I'm more excited about this than I care to admit.

New Orleans...of course!
I agree that Stevie's songs are never literally about one thing. What got me to thinking about this topic was the thread I posted yesterday about "Julia." I had forgotten that it was about the relationship between her and Robin, which is a very powerful subject about two friends and their challenges and strong bond. I really appreciate that song because Stevie rarely veers off the whole "man-women love topic." Since my profession involves working with survivors of domestic violence, I read my reality into her lyrics. But it's all about interpretation. I think that's probably the way Stevie wants her songs to be heard, and to affect people.

"Catfish and Ladybug" Now it is about a relationship, but really..it is about a fish and an insect. Does that really count?:laugh::laugh:

You know, Goldfish and Ladybug was actually the first song I thought of and I have to admit, I decided it wasn't legit for this list. Their love was real, Bandon! ;)
And of course you could always make the "it's a metaphor" argument, but I'm honestly not even sure about that. I just like the whimsical zaniness that a literal interpretation of that song carries.

Dex, you're in England, right? Hawkeye, guessing you're in the US and are just an early bird or can't sleep. My new job keep is keeping me up on Friday and Saturday nights/morning these days. I'm gonna think up another similar game for next week, and if you're up for it, I'll posdt a new challenge for you. Keep working on this one if you can think of anything. :D
Yeah. It's Sunday noon here. Not a very adventurous time to be awake on my end. Sleep well Bandon!

City of Hope? Did she write that?
City Of Hope (The Charmed Ones) was written about/for Robin (Stevie's longtime friend who died of Leukemia in 1982.) Stevie wrote some very touching and personal lyrics for that song. The music is credited to two other writers according to BMI publishing

List of Released Stevie Written Songs Not Written About A Love Relationship
After The Glitter Fades
Debatable.
Sorcerer
"I'm tired, I need you badly" Pretty sure this features people in love - the "man and woman on a starstream".
The Nightmare
Pretty sure this is about the 'dream' of love turning into 'the nightmare'.
Gold and Braid
Stevie has said that this song is about Lindsey.
Listen To The Rain
Really? "My world will still revolve around you"
I Sing For The Things
"Well, look deep into my eyes, my love" I don't think this one needs explained, it's pretty obvious from the title of the song its about love.
Trouble In Shangri La
"I remember him, he was very young, no one spoke like him, he was someone" This is a song about trouble in paradise - i.e. love. In fact, I'm pretty sure she said this was about Lindsey too.
I'm pretty sure "Fire Burning" isn't about love. Other than that, I'm stumped. It's a tricky one.
Oh, also, I'd speculate that Sister Honey is less about Love and more about sex, or at least raw sexual desire.

Do I love you?
Well I always did
Nobody knows nothin' 'bout it
to the red rose goes the passion
I'd say that one's about love too.

"like Alice through the looking glass, she used to know who she was...call out my name, but I get no answer"

You Can't Fix This
To me every other song I can think of has something to do with love or relationships.
Gypsy- "she was just a wish"
Italian Summer- this song could easily be about a fling in Italy or a love are first sight moment.
Bella Donna- "you are in love with.. and I am ready to sail"
Rhiannon- all be it based on "Triad" it is still about love and relationship. "Wouldn't you love to love her"
Garbo- the song is about this guy in the song makes her feel like a moviestar. "I love to waltz with a man in a dark linen suit"

Gypsy- "she was just a wish"
"Gypsy" is about wanting to go back to your innocence, back to sitting on the floor surrounded by your paper flowers, from a time when life was simpler, written in the wake of Fleetwood Mac's rise to fame.
Stevie told the story of the song on the unleashed tour. So it's not really about a relationship with other people.

She will leave you crying in the night -- about a man/woman relationship.
Whether real or fictional who knows.
Tell me I'm wrong
I can't believe you
We tried a thousand times before
Rained on reasons
Kept us believing
That there might still be more.. --- I vote this one is about a man/woman
relationship too

How about "Whole Lotta Trouble"?
Whole Lotta Trouble is def about a love/sex relationship
In the morning light... he says, "When will I see you?"
She says, "I don't think tomorrow, baby"
Sometimes I wonder if things would change if we stayed together
Let's face it, man/woman relationships are Stevie's stock-in-trade. At least 95% of her songs are about that.

Many of those songs are about love on that list. "Italian Summer" is a very romantic song. Belladonna and many others are love songs to herself!!!
Italian Summer: Case closed.
You say hello
Put down that guitar and handed me a rose
At the end of the Italian Summer
It rains fast and it rains hard
The wind blows through you
It tears you apart
Ooh it's so romantic
Hey it's so soulful
The rain falls down
And the thunder rolls

Well, if they're love songs to herself, I think we can say they aren't about a love relationship.
