Ok, so...I used to be a member here forever ago but can't remember my username or password.

Either way, I am a rabid Fleetwood Mac fan, ALWAYS go and see them whenever they come to Australia, and was bitterly disappointed when they cancelled late last year due to poor John and was then hugely excited when they rescheduled WITH Christine for a US tour right when I would actually BE in the US! (for the first time ever)

I booked my partner and I tickets to the October 6 show at Madison Square Garden, and then...my partner cannot get her US visa in time. SIGH. So we can't go and have to cancel our entire 5 week trip including the Fleetwood Mac show!

I'm waiting to see if the Ticketmaster people can help me out, but if not, is anyone interested in buying my two tickets!? I can verify. I am also not looking to make any sort of profit. The seats are not amazing, but at least they're something.

Anyone interested, let me know, and sorry if this is illegal on here! I don't want empty seats at a show I would've LOVED to have gone to!

If i had the cash to buy you tickets and flights to the US to see F/Mac i would without hesitation... I also had great seats to see them in Brissy last year, pretty devastated to say the least :distress:..

Actually all day today i have been sitting by the phone, trying to enter in a radio competition to win tickets to see them at Maddison Square Garden. Wish me luck everyone :)

So sorry your plans fell through. Can't you find another friend or someone else who has a visa? I don't think it's illegal or inappropriate to inquire about it here. I suggest you post the offer on Craig's List online, to reach a more centralized, New York market.

I have often sold extra tickets on craigslist. If you aren't familiar with it, it's an online board which has everything, including tickets. You are not allowed to scalp, so make sure that the price you list is the amount that you actually paid. (you can include service charges). You may want to charge a little less than face value if the show isn't sold out and if you don't have really good seats. At least that way you would get most of your money back.

I'm really sorry you and your partner can't go. :(

If you need any help figuring out craigslist, let me know and I"ll be glad to help.

Where are the seats!? I wasn't able to buy any - I got shut out - and would definitely be interested. I live in NYC and need to buy them for my myself and my mom! DM me if you need!

Thanks so much for these posts! :)

I might try Craigslist if nothing else eventuates, and no, none of my friends or family can afford to go with me on a 5 week trip, nor can they take that much time off work, or they don't WANT to be stuck with me for that long. lol

Actually, craigslist is out. It won't let my listing go live as I don't have a US phone number.

Because I'm in Australia, it wants me to post in Australia. Which is virtually pointless as the tickets are for a US event!!!

I'm a casual fan who is new to this board and a novice on FM history. On past tours have there been posts on traveling fans getting together for dinner before the show? I will be attending the Indianapolis show on 10/21 and would be interested in meeting up with some rabid fans before the concert to absorb all I can about the band. Also, if anyone is familiar with Indy and can suggest a nice place to meet or at least eat in the vicinity of the Bankers Life Fieldhouse I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Why do you need a US phone number? I've posted on CL many times without a phone number.
There are other on line ticket sites like stub hub. Can you try though them?

Welcome:) this sounds like so much fun. I will be traveling to Phoenix,
And would love to meet fellow FM fans. My friends will finally realize I'm not the only one, who is this "crazy" about the band. Best of luck getting together with fellow Ledgies.

NEWSDAY: CHRISTINE MCVIE TALKS FLEETWOOD MAC'S 'UNPRECEDENTED' RETURN AHEAD OF MADISON SQUARE GARDEN CONCERTS .
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/christine-mcvie-talks-fleetwood-mac-s-unprecedented-return-ahead-of-madison-square-garden-concerts-1.9458766

Oct. 03--Fleetwood Mac didn't think they would ever be at full strength again.

In 1998, when singer-keyboardist Christine McVie retired from touring, that seemed to be the end of an era -- the finale for Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours"-era lineup of Christine McVie, drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks.

They had a legendary run, especially with "Rumours," which remains the ninth- biggest-selling album in history after 19 million copies were sold in the United States alone. But part of the Mac's legend was also its contentiousness. After all, it was built on two couples that had broken up.

When McVie left the band, not out of contentiousness, but because she didn't feel she could continue physically or mentally, the band accepted it.

"It was multiple reasons why I thought, 'I've had enough. I wanna go home and live in the country and get a Range Rover and get the dogs, the Wellie boots and the scarf and cook for the YMCA' or whatever," McVie recently told CBS News. "And I sort of had this misguided idea that that was the life that I wanted, you know? And to some degree, I enjoyed it for a few years."

Nicks saw that her friend was happy in her new life, but always held out hope she would change her mind. When McVie sold her pianos because she thought she wouldn't need them, Nicks secretly bought them and kept them in storage. Just in case.

Nicks says Fleetwood Mac has always been about doing the best set it possibly can, but without McVie, all the classics she sang on became off-the-table.

"We are totally willing to try anything, and that's what we do," Nicks says. "You can kind of feel what works and what doesn't work. The unfortunate thing is, we haven't fared well in doing Chris' songs. We don't sound like Chris. I don't sound good singing lead on her songs. Lindsey doesn't sound good singing lead on her songs."

While Fleetwood Mac was working on moving on without her, McVie was working on moving on herself. She went for therapy to deal with her phobia of flying and eventually worked through it. Her first flight was to visit Fleetwood at his home in Maui.

McVie surprisingly joined the band for its London show at The O2 arena last year. "It was so comfortable being back onstage with them, as if no time had passed, and then we all started talking, and it feels like the time is right," she says. "I'm really happy."

And there were no doubts from the rest of Fleetwood Mac. "As far as we're concerned, she's never really left," the band said in a joint statement. "We are overjoyed to have Christine back on stage with us."

The band has already been in the studio this year, working on new music, though the fruits of their labor probably won't be heard until next year. However, the simple reunion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers seems to be enough of an event for everyone. Their new tour, which stops at Madison Square Garden tomorrow and Tuesday, will mark only the second time all five members of the band have toured together in the past 30 years.

The last time came after the brokered peace following their decision to play at President Bill Clinton's inaugural gala in 1993, a collaboration that brought Buckingham back into the fold for what eventually would become "The Dance" album and tour.

It's no wonder the band sees the new "On With the Show" tour as a cause for celebration and plans to enjoy it.

"This is sort of pretty unprecedented, really, that someone should leave such a high-status group as Fleetwood Mac and then return," McVie told CBS News. "If you're not gonna have fun then, you're never gonna have any fun. So I'm sure that the whole band is in agreement that we wanna have a really good time and celebrate our friendship and our lives together."

KEEPING UP

Part of what keeps Fleetwood Mac strong 47 years after drummer Mick Fleetwood first teamed up with bassist John McVie is the way their individual projects feed into the band as a whole. Here's what The Mac's members have been up to recently:

MICK FLEETWOOD

MOST RECENT PROJECT His autobiography, "Play On: Now, Then and Fleetwood Mac," will be released Oct. 28, where Fleetwood tells the story of his career and his band.

ALSO WORKING ON His restaurant, Fleetwood's on Front Street, on the island of Maui, with specialties like cioppino and grilled shutome (swordfish).

STEVIE NICKS

MOST RECENT PROJECT Her new album, "24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault," will be released on Tuesday, featuring the single "The Dealer" and other previously unreleased songs.

ALSO WORKING ON The "24 Karat Gold" photo exhibit, featuring self-portrait Polaroids she has taken for decades while on tour, will open at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Manhattan next Friday.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM

MOST RECENT PROJECT "One Man Show," his first solo acoustic live album, combining Fleetwood Mac classics with solo material such as "Trouble."

ALSO WORKING ON Songs for the new Fleetwood Mac album.

CHRISTINE McVIE

MOST RECENT PROJECT She put out a solo album "In the Meantime" in 2004 that she was proud of, but because of her fear of flying at the time could not promote.

ALSO WORKING ON Songs for the new Fleetwood Mac album.

JOHN McVIE

MOST RECENT PROJECT He's been focused on his health after being diagnosed last year with an unspecified cancer, resulting in the cancellation of the band's Australian tour last fall.

ALSO WORKING ON Songs for the new Fleetwood Mac album.

Fleetwood Mac regroups for a world tour

Some artists tell you this is their final tour, but with others, you just never know.

This week, two shows are essential for music fans, a third is highly recommended and the fourth is an exciting pairing of former boy band rivals.

FLEETWOOD MAC

Back in 1998, Christine McVie, one of the three lead singers in Fleetwood Mac, quit the band and its possible tours.

She was tired, having been a group member since 1970. So that was it. The classic lineup of McVie, her ex-husband John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks would never appear together again.

Until now.

Earlier this year, Fleetwood Mac — which appears Saturday at the Prudential Center at 165 Mulberry St. in Newark and Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Center at 3601 S. Broad St. in Philadelphia — announced it had fully regrouped and had completed recording most of a new album. A world tour would be next, followed by the 2015 album release.

Since that announcement, more details have come forth. One significant detail is Christine McVie has written or co-written a majority of the disc’s songs so far.

That should keep her interested since, in her absence, there was talk of the original Mac lineup getting together, one that would have included Jeremy Spencer, Peter Green, Fleetwood, John McVie and Danny Kirwan. But that was just talk.

So far, the band isn’t debuting any new songs on tour, choosing instead to revive songs like “Little Lies,” “Everywhere” and “Seven Wonders” from the 1990 album “Tango in the Night.” Fans will get to hear many of their favorites, including “Landslide,” “Tusk,” “Gypsy,” “Dreams” and “Rhiannon.”

Show time at Prudential: 8 p.m. Tickets: $49.50 to $199.50. Information: 973-854-8760.

Show time at Wells Fargo: 8 p.m. Tickets: $49.50 to $179.50; Information: 800-298-4200.

In similar news: Yesterday Daltrey and Townshend’s fellow sexagenarian stadium gladiators Fleetwood Mac announced a Nashville date on their own 2015 Golden Years Revived Not Necessarily Relived Tour (unofficial title).

The Mac makes way to Bridgestone March 18, where they last played in 2009, during the arena’s Sommet Center days. It was, despite a solid-as-**** set list and Lindsey Buckingham’s awesomely uncomfortable guitargasm faces, a plodding, lackluster show that made The Spin feel, “like we were 15 again, bored and squirming in our seats.” But this time around, ringer singer Christine McVie is, following a 16-year furlough, back in the band. So maybe that’ll make all the difference. Tickets for that rock ’n’ roll celebration of social security cost $45-$175 and go on sale Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. here.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with still rocking into old age (case in point: Bruce Springsteen, who as of last month, is eligible for social security); but let’s put into perspective just how ****ing old these bands are.

Are government benefits only available to over-65s in the US? You don't have an unemployment benefit or a youth allowance payment?

If they record a new album quick like Stevie did with her 24K album. It could happen.

If Stevie is the only one that owes FM songs which is I guess is about 3 or 4 tunes and add her backup on the other tunes .I dont see what not.

They will be close together for the next 6 plus months .They could go over some tunes for the new album if they have any free time.

We do have unemployment. You have to pay into the system first before you are laid off, to qualify for the benefit. That's the same thing with the death and disability benefits distributed through social security as well.

I'm not sure what a youth allowance payment is, so I don't know if we have the equivalent to that. But people with dependent children can get aid, food vouchers, baby formula, etc.

Gee, Australia's welfare system is a lot more generous than America's. You don't need to have paid tax to qualify for a benefit. To qualify for the dole ($515 per fortnight) you just need to show that you are looking for work. Youth Allowance is a payment to people aged between 16 and 25 who are either studying, training, doing an apprenticeship, looking for work or are sick. People who live with their parents are ineligible if their parents earn over a specified amount, about $100000 p.a.

My best friend's family lives in New Zealand and Australia and are shocked at how few benefits people in the U.S. receive. We are the only industrialized nation that does not have a national medical plan (people are scared to death of "socialized medicine" here so fight it, even though we pay 5x as much as everyone else in the world for way less health coverage and many people end up in bankruptcy because of the lack of health care). Also, college financial aid is difficult for most people in the middle class to qualify for (unlike most other nations) and there is virtually no "safety" net now for people who are unemployed long-term. Forget benefits that you're describing--that's "welfare," which people here abhor.

Also, unlike most other nations which provide at least four weeks of paid vacation each year, we don't get that either. People in the U.S. are lucky if they receive two weeks of paid vacation. And, for most of us, we work many more hours without additional compensation (they call it "exempt" or "salaried" status), too. I sometimes wish I had moved to Australia when I was younger. Our country really seems to be going downhill--but that's another discussion.

But shouldn't we have more self reliance? We should not have to depend on the government for anything.

Self-reliance is great--when there is an even playing field and there are decent jobs, opportunities for small businesses, and the economy is flourishing. Unfortunately, since so many industries have been outsources (which is great for the top 1% & large multinational corporations), most other countries provide a safety net for their citizens. In other countries, people do not worry about being homeless or needing health care because it's provided for everyone (If you pay taxes, you get something for them, instead of paying taxes and receiving very little--as most of us do now).

Medicare in Australia allows people to receive free treatment at public hospitals. Anyone who earns above the tax free threshold (above $18000 p.a.) pays a 2% Medicare levy on their taxable income. It was 1.5% but the Gillard Labor Government increased it by 0.5% to help fund the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Many workers receive penalty rates for working weekends and public holidays or shift work: When I was 18 and working weekends washing dishes in a restaurant, I was paid $20 per hour and when I worked as a nursing assistant in a public hospital I once earned $600 for 20 hours work as I worked nights. I've heard that in America many restaurant employees don't earn above the Australian minimum wage ($16.87 per hour - although apprentices, trainees and people under 21 can legally be paid less) unless they receive tips.

As you said, all full-time workers here qualify for 4 weeks paid annual leave. I think sometimes that also comes with a 12.5% annual leave loading. Some shift workers, e.g. doctors, nurses, police qualify for 6 weeks paid annual leave to compensate them for the hassle of working irregular hours.

The college system in America is one I hope our politicians never try to emulate. Australian university and technical education (Diploma level) students can take out income-contingent loans - HECS-HELP or VET FEE-HELP loans. The government pays for your entire education upfront and you pay the loan back through the taxation system only once you start earning over $50000 p.a.

Another poster said that we shouldn't have to rely on the government for anything. I completely disagree. If that were true, why even have governments? Some people through no fault of their own, are born with chronic disease or disability. Some people are born healthy but acquire a disability later in life. The government should absolutely be supporting these people and their carers.

The fact is, most people who are successful, were genetically blessed or were born into favourable circumstances. I read an article about this -

http://www.smh.com.au/comment/no-credit-where-its-due-in-advice-from-the-genetically-gifted-20141010-113qtg.html

As the writer says, think about it, is it really impressive that the upper-middle class son of a respected lawyer and business woman who was mates with the CEO of IBM founded Microsoft? The author is right - If a congenitally brain-damaged, impoverished, legless Bangladeshi had founded Microsoft, that would be impressive.

I don't think this tour is going beyond June 2015.

interesting.

at the m&g in NYC, Mick reportedly said in response to question about their album that they have 27 (i think?) pieces recorded already (would that be 27 whole songs? can't remember?). after follow-up question on why did they not put that out already and what/who is holding the album, he was apparently pretty specific saying something like they need to get Stevie on board and she's not there yet.

so if they are not touring beyond june 2015, not doing Glasto (what?? that makes no sense! what is wrong with this band?), not working on the album as they have too many songs already but no balls to put it out without Stevie (apparently zillions they are making on this tour are not enough?) then what are they doing beyond june 2015??

what does "going on for a long time and bear much fruit" means then?

note that when Mick announced 20+ more dates at the Today show, audience showed next to no excitement about that. must have been a lot of hardcores there.

As far as I'm concerned, they released an album without Christine so they can release an album without Stevie. I'm sure many fans feel the same way. I mean, they have the balls to release Time but they don't have the balls to release songs co-written by Lindsey and Christine? What the hell?

Also, is it really true that there are 27 songs done? Just release half of them and keep the rest for an album with Stevie!

I had a dream about a new Fleetwood Mac song. Lindsey was strumming away on the guitar and Christine was singing,

"This welcome of yours
Is it all mine
Or is it all gone?"

My feelings exactly.

Stevie is not on board. No surprise since she's never mentioned new music. Seriously Stevie, you can't freaking record 3 songs with the band? The band that made you famous? Christine is back. She's all right with the tour money though. I love Stevie, but the more I hear stuff like this my love is fading. Just the way it is.

Not making an album would be a HUGE missed opportunity. She has went on and on for years about wanting Christine back. So for her to be so hesitant now is incredibly disappointing to hear.

You'd think that given how much Miss Nicks hates the Say You Will album, she would jump at the chance to ensure that it is not the last album her band is remembered by.

Surprised if they extend as you say into Sept. As of today, the tour ends 6/30.

Brett Tuggle posted it on his Twitter I believe. That is the last date I have seen from my sources as well.

at the m&g in NYC, Mick reportedly said in response to question about their album that they have 27 (i think?) pieces recorded already (would that be 27 whole songs? can't remember?). after follow-up question on why did they not put that out already and what/who is holding the album, he was apparently pretty specific saying something like they need to get Stevie on board and she's not there yet.
But we knew she wasn't in the studio because she was recording a solo album, and that she's apparently been trying to figure out how to approach recording her songs, all while recording a solo album, putting together a show for her photographs, and preparing for a Fleetwood Mac tour.

As far as I'm concerned, they released an album without Christine so they can release an album without Stevie. I'm sure many fans feel the same way. I mean, they have the balls to release Time but they don't have the balls to release songs co-written by Lindsey and Christine? What the hell?
I don't see what was ballsy about them making the "Time" album.

1970: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan
1973: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Bob Welch, Bob Weston, Dave Walker
1975: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham
1995: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Billy Burnette, Bekka Bramlett, Dave Mason.

Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie = Fleetwood Mac. SYW was the mutant, not "Time."

I was just pointing out that the band has already released an album without Stevie. So why not do it again?

I love LOVE how close Christine and Stevie are for "Everywhere" in that picture. I guess that's one thing that's bugged me about their staging, just how far apart they are and how they interactions mostly consist of looking at each other rather than jamming together.

If I ever staged an acoustic section for one of their concerts, they would all be center stage and very close. Do they, meaning Chris or Stevie, ever hold a mic? I just have this image in my head of them all singing "Honey Hi" to each other, with Lindsey on guitar. Very informal, relaxed, sitting on stools or chairs, maybe Chris and Stevie slightly above Lindsey who's in the middle. It's kind of weird, but that's how I see an acoustic portion.

General question: Does anyone else think that FM ends a few of their songs too early/quickly? I know I'm watching videos and then when Lindsey turns and heads toward Mick that he's signaling to end the song. I just feel that he should let a few of the songs breathe a little more. I love the end of Over My Head, the instrumental light jam they do; that should definitely go on for one more repeat. The end of Little Lies, another jam, his guitar solo doesn't end naturally and I don't like the note they're ending the song on. Of course, there's Sisters of the Moon, which still just abruptly ends. Any others? Do you feel the same way and would like those instrumentals/jams/solos to continue a little longer?

I agree. The long extended jams are missing on a few songs especially Sisters of the Moon. But it is a new era for live performances. The list could go on. Why do they need backup singers especially since it takes away from the amazing Mac harmonies. Why do they need a supporting band? Its just not the songs are shorter, everything about their live performances has changed from 1982 to 2014.

Mc back in the Mac - Rockers' blossom on star return

When Christine McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac for the first time since the late 1990s, it was a reminder a great band is more than the sum of its parts

In September 2013, Fleetwood Mac gathered backstage at Dublin's O2 arena. Several hours later the multimillion-selling soft rockers were to perform the first of two sold-out shows at the 14,000 capacity venue.

But Ireland wasn't on their minds at that moment. Instead, the group were tentatively renewing acquaintances with Christine McVie, the dulcet-voiced keyboard player who had authored some of their biggest hits before leaving the band - fleeing it, really - in 1997.

Nerves were in the air. McVie had barely spoken to the rest of the line-up in the intervening decade and a half. Now, after a gruelling divorce and a spell of depression, she was contemplating a comeback. She'd flown to Dublin to rehearse, with a view to joining Fleetwood Mac on stage in London later in the tour. Deep within the concrete labyrinth that constitutes the O2's backstage area, the tension was palpable: would the old chemistry still endure? What of old enmities? Fleetwood Mac's history was notoriously fractious. Was the band broken, impossible to repair?

Thirteen months later we have our answer. At 71, McVie has reconnected with Fleetwood Mac for their North American tour and the reviews are unanimous: with McVie on board, the final part of the jigsaw has clicked into position and, for the first time since the Clinton-era, "the Mac" are operating at the height of the powers. A 2015 European trek is rumoured and will inevitably include at least one Dublin date. Coming back to Ireland, there would surely be a sense of things moving full circle - of the band returning to the place their renewal began.

You don't have to be a Fleetwood Mac devotee (though it nowadays seems as if most everyone is) to be struck by their reinvention. On paper, McVie's contribution was peripheral. Yes, she was responsible for such wistful perennials as 'Little Lies', 'Everywhere' and 'You Make Loving Fun'.

Then, the group contained a multitude of writers and she was some way down the pecking order. It is impossible to imagine Fleetwood Mac without singer and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham (he briefly left in the late 80s, calling the group's future into question) or the ethereal Stevie Nicks - or, for that matter, without drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie (the warhorses from whom the outfit takes its moniker).

If anyone was disposable, surely it was McVie (briefly married to the bass player, she kept his name). On tour, she seemed reflexively wary; her vocals, breathy and understated, never vied for the spotlight with Buckingham's tortured yelp or Nicks' Enya-goes-to-California rasp. And yet, she brought a vital quality, in the absence of which Fleetwood Mac just weren't Fleetwood Mac. For sure they were a fine rock group - nonetheless, without McVie, Buckingham's intensity overpowered the band's live shows and they were the poorer for it.

This says a great deal about Fleetwood Mac but even more about the inscrutable nature of musical chemistry. There are countless other examples. Who'd have imagined, for instance, that the departure of REM's drummer, Bill Berry, in 1997 would plunge the group into a slow death spin. Granted, they slogged on and released some decent(ish) LPs before calling it quits in 2011. Nevertheless REM after Berry was never the same - when, tired of the touring, he announced his departure, it was the end of the band as we knew it.

Similarly, it was not generally understood that the loss of drummer 'Reni' was a death-knell for influential "Madchester" group The Stone Roses. He was the percussionist - however, that was merely the beginning of his significance. With his free-wheeling grooves and lack of ego, he embodied the Roses' best qualities: after he walked with the completion of their second LP, the band collapsed in on itself. The original line-up returned in 2012 and it was a reminder how important every wheel on the wagon can be: reviewers singled out Reni's contribution as a saving grace in a patchy comeback.

With a background in the British blues revival of the late 60s, Christine McVie was a talented player. That wasn't why she mattered. Consider, Oasis, who cheerfully shed three-fifths of the squad behind Definitely Maybe and (What's The Story?) Morning Glory and were much reduced. Similarly, surely it is no coincidence Larry Mullen Jr - a mere drummer - graces the cover of the new U2 album. Would U2 be U2 were he or Adam Clayton to walk away? Could The Rolling Stones continue calling themselves The Rolling Stone minus Charlie Watts, the quiet man in a gang of well-heeled rogues?

Of course, few of these bands have a history as complicated as that of Fleetwood Mac. As has been chronicled endlessly - indeed constitutes virtually a mini industry on to itself - during the making of their defining album, 1977's Rumours, the five members were tied together via a series of messy romantic entanglements. Buckingham and Nicks had joined Fleetwood Mac as a musical and romantic couple, eventually breaking-up under the strain of working and living together: Christine McVie had split from John, fed up with his drinking (they refused to discuss non-musical matters in the studio). And Fleetwood, father of two young children, was recently divorced (for good measure he had conducted a fling with Nicks).

This being the music industry in the 1970s, drugs and alcohol were conspicuous too. "Until then, Fleetwood Mac hadn't had much experience with this Andean rocket fuel," Fleetwood recalls in his autobiography. "Now we discovered that a toot now and then relieved the boredom of long hours in the studio with little nourishment.

'We weren't just singing to each other but screaming, and everything was enlarged by the intake of illegal substances," was how Christine recollected the time. "I used to go onstage and drink a bottle of Dom Pérignon, and drink one off-stage afterwards. It's not the kind of party I'd like to go to now."

Rather than drive Fleetwood Mac apart, the madness acted like a glue, holding together five exhausted, occasionally unhinged, individuals who, under normal circumstances, might have found it difficult to be in the same room.

Indeed, it was telling that McVie would exit Fleetwood Mac not amid the mania and decadence of the Rumours era but in a period of relative calm. In 1997, circa the release of their comeback live LP The Dance, she developed a chronic fear of flying. Given Fleetwood Mac were gearing up for a mammoth world tour, this obviously created difficulties. There was too much cash at stake for anyone to contemplate cancelling - instead, McVie walked, taking with her the underdog vim so crucial to the band's make-up.

"Well, I initially developed a great fear of flying. It was a real phobia. I also bought a house in England and decided, to a degree, I was really tired of the road," she said later. "I wasn't just burned out . . . I was tired of traveling and living out of a suitcase. I'm quite a domestic person by nature and the nomad thing had got a bit stale on me, really," she said later.

"It was never anything personal between the five of us. It was just that I felt my time had come and I just thought that I really wanted to leave Los Angeles and make a home in England. That was the root of it, really."

Her perspective changed with the break-up several years ago of her marriage. Living alone in rural Kent her sense of isolation calcified into depression. So she reached out to her former-band mates.

"I went over to Dublin," said McVie. "and it was decided that I would go on stage and do 'Don't Stop' with them at the [London] O2. We rehearsed it in Dublin and everyone was looking over at each other smiling thinking this was fantastic. For me, I was looking over at my family again and it was effortless."

Newsweek, Breaking the Silence: Fleetwood Mac is Back Intact

Stevie Nicks may have invented the selfie.

I’m standing next to the gold-dust woman herself, admiring a room of faded self-portraits in a New York City gallery space at the Morrison Hotel Gallery. The blown-up Polaroids, which Stevie Nicks dug up from the ‘70s, feature the artist in all her witchy glory. In some her eyes are at half-mast, long past closing time. Others depict her cloaked in shawls and lounging in empty hotel rooms, a penetrating glare boring through the lens. The most transfixing images feature Nicks as she sees herself: vulnerable yet tough, both the subject of and a mediator for the madness that defined — and almost destroyed — Fleetwood Mac.

The exhibition’s opening party on a gusty Thursday night was appropriately opulent, featuring a spread of crostinis, crystal-clad guests and a specialty “24 karat gold” drink for the occasion. When I ask Nicks which image is her favorite, she softly shrugs and tells me she has none. Instead she describes her aversion to being photographed in a pool, and how it felt to find these prints again.

The exhibit coincides with the release of other treasures Nicks recently unearthed from the vault; namely, 24 Karat Gold, a collection of songs she wrote then tucked away in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Fleetwood Mac was at its most notorious then, with tales of hard partying, wife- and husband-swapping, indulging in too much nose candy, and struggling for a connection onstage and off. While the notoriety has followed them throughout the many years of break-ups and disagreements, solo careers and hiatuses, it wasn’t enough to break them.

24 Karat Gold, which dropped on October 7th, was released just in time for the ‘Mac’s glorious return to the stage. The band’s five members —Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood — kicked off a massive “On With the Show” tour late last month that will take them across the globe.

Several weeks before the selfie gallery opening, I’m at Madison Square Garden watching Fleetwood Mac burn through “The Chain,” all tormented harmonies and lysergic guitar riffs. In lieu of lighters, thousands of fans held up their cell phone screens to dance in the dark. Strangers to my left hugged each other, jumped up and down, and cried together. The performance felt as intimate as a living room acoustic gig, the audience humming along to Rumours hits and Tusk deep cuts.

Forty-plus years later this band lives up to the hype: Lindsey Buckingham on the lip of the stage, coaxing his cherry-red guitar into a wail; Stevie Nicks next to him, close but far away, shrouded in billowy black. On her right, Christine McVie the group’s secret songbird, holds court over her keyboard. John McVie, the band’s backbone, stands dutifully in the background with his bass, at the right hand of Mick Fleetwood, the group’s impish father figure helming a gold-embellished drum set.

Before Fleetwood Mac became synonymous with chains, gold dust and never going back again, the group was a British blues-rock band co-founded by Peter Green in the late ‘60s. It featured John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, along with Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer in its initial lineup. The band had mild success, and began to amble towards pop territory after Christine McVie, then married to John, joined on the keyboards. Sometime after Green’s departure the group eventually stumbled upon the young couple Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, who had been creating righteous tunes in their duo act Buckingham Nicks, which saw lukewarm initial success with their eponymous album.

While Fleetwood Mac is one of the most successful bands in history, it may also be one of the most dysfunctional. When asked about the band’s, erm, storied reputation, Mick Fleetwood tells me he gets it. “I have to say — for me — [Fleetwood Mac’s legacy] is almost more meaningful than the music. It’s about a bunch of people who had a story to tell, and everyone was pretty damned aware of the pain, the happiness, the grind of working out human conditions,” he says.

That “grind” is the crux of Fleetwood’s forthcoming book Play On: Now, Then and Fleetwood Mac, which will be released later this month. Play On speaks openly about Fleetwood’s various marriages, personal failure and reconciliation. His new memoir is a shift from his 1991 book, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac, which confirmed the rumors of the past. Fleetwood is the nucleus of the band and its caretaker, although he wasn’t immune to the heartbreaks and hangups.

So why do people still care so much about this band? And what keeps these five together? According to Fleetwood, they don’t have much of a choice given the ancient history. “We’re all friends, and ex-lovers, and have deep, deep friendships sometimes gone horribly wrong,” Fleetwood says. “If there are issues — there have been, and probably will be! — we have to go through them in order to do what we’re doing. And that is worth a ****.”

Artists often describe their work as a calling. Christine McVie claims that itch was stronger than the tranquility she’d found in the English countryside, during the 18-year hiatus she spent away from Fleetwood Mac. “I thought I fancied being the country lady, da dee da dee da, wearing old Wellington rain boots. I wanted to get away from the intensity of touring,” McVie tells me. “I think it was just burned out, it was never anything personal with the guys. I [then] thought what am I doing here? Am I going to rot here in the country, watching my dogs get older?”

But first, she had to confront the very real fear of airplanes that halted her from leaving Europe for nearly twenty years. With the help of therapy and Fleetwood’s companionship, she traveled to Maui (where he lived at the time). The fear went away. She talked with Nicks about possibly reuniting with the group and after swearing to commit, they tried it out. As she says, it was “the strangest thing, like a time warp. It was as though I’d never left!”

McVie tells me that she and Fleetwood have been involved in intense fitness regimens to prepare for the tour, and as a group they’ve recording new songs. “The songs are very powerful and very beautiful and very rock and roll too,” she says. “They’re different because of the time change, but it’s undeniably Fleetwood Mac.”

I'm sorta totally loving the fact that Stevie sings "can't" with a British accent during Little Lies. I've had a pretty crappy week, and that's just made me laugh ridiculously. She really has problems with that word, doesn't she?

Well I got tickets to see another show. Better seats too, eighth row center. At a fairly good price. Two tickets for less than $1000. I figured "why the hell not?" lol. Anyway, it would be cool if they do a few set list changes for the next leg, of course I know this is very unlikely.

I know! It's really weird, especially as Christine sings that 'a' in "can't disguise" with a flat vowel, as is the standard American pronunciation.

Not at all. Love In Store got some airplay and was gone from radio about as quick as it came whereas OMH was played for years and years on radio.

Yeah, OMH is a classic. It was never my favorite, especially the Dance version...but I really like how they are playing this one. The mini-Mac setup is great, and I love the instrumental break/jam at the end. I wish it would go on a little longer that's how much I love the sound. Plus, Christine is so enjoying herself on that one; her smile is so wide in some of the videos I've seen.

Love In Store peaked at #22. Over My Head peaked at #20. But you are right, Over My Head had better staying power.

I love this version of OMH. I don't much care for the Dance version and I'm so-so about the 1980 Live version. This one seems to make her really happy, and it seems to be going down well; from what I can hear people are singing along and enjoying it.

This is a killer schedule for this band, who's average age is 68. John McVie has/had cancer and he might be susceptible to a relapse. Body/mind rest is needed, and John in particular has lost weight and it would not be surprising that a cancellation may be forthcoming in the near future. Most people go on a 2 week vacation and it takes 2 days to adjust to the environment, then returning home it takes another 2 days.

Imagine traveling day in and day out on their schedule listed below (I can't). The help they require (people doing the packing and unpacking) does help them, but still their bodies takes on the stress of time adjustments needed for their performance.
