LOS ANGELES (AP) - Stevie Nicks is joining "The Voice" as an adviser to Adam Levine's team for the upcoming season.
Filming is currently underway on the show's seventh season. Nicks, the 66-year-old Fleetwood Mac singer, has been working with Levine and his 12 team members as they assign songs and rehearse with the contestants in preparation for the show's battle rounds.
Levine and Blake Shelton will be joined by Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams as coaches when the NBC show returns on Sept. 22.
The network says it will soon announce other advisers for this season.
Fleetwood Mac is set to embark on a 33-city tour starting Sept. 30 in Minneapolis, with Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and his ex-wife Christine McVie.

This might be interesting.......Adam has frequently said he considers Stevie to be one of the best singers of all time, and Phillip Phillips said she was the best mentor on "American Idol", hands down!

Is she going to be on it for one show, or is it an recurring role? I think she will really do well as a mentor. Adam adores her, and I think some of their audience who may not be familiar with her, will also come to love her, especially for her unique way of phrasing her thoughts.
I avoided the show for several seasons, but eventually it started to grow on me. Very excited that she's doing this.
It was so nice for Phillip Phillips to give big props to Stevie. He's the real deal, very authentic and talented, almost like an old sage. He must have seen those qualities in Stevie.
Since the show is pre-recorded, will Stevie be on tour by the time the shows air? It's a good move on her part, keeping herself in the public eye. However, I hope she has time to work on her band's pending album!

This is such great news. "The Voice" is such an interesting show, way more fun to watch than "American Idol" or any of the other singing competitions. Even my parents, who are in their late 70's, watch this show and really enjoy it.
It's a far more kind show than the others. The coaches are nice, they all want each other to do well, it's just one big happy place.
I think Stevie will fit in amazing.

I realize this is an incredibly smart publicity move for Stevie & Fleetwood Mac, but I still can't help but cringe at it. To me, shows like the Voice are just beneath the iconic stature of someone like Stevie. Plus, Stevie has always been the one touting how important it is to leave some mystery of aura around oneself. A one off appearance on American Idol is one thing... but to actually be a part of the cast of a show? :sorry:

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I liken Stevie joining THE VOICE to Oprah Winfrey agreeing to co-host The Jerry Springer Show. HEADLINE: Academy Award Winning Actress Meryl Streep to join the cast of "The Real Housewives of Orange County". This just seems beneath her iconic status. As the previous poster stated, Stevie has always maintained a mystical presence. So, to join a reality television contest show just seems unnecessary.
I sure wish Stevie would work on laying down tracks for the impending Fleetwood Mac album that is sitting gathering dust.

I understand the sentiment but I think at this point, Stevie's legacy has been secured and it would take something a lot worse than The Voice (which I don’t particularly like) to maculate the iconic status she’s reached.

Stevie Nicks to Advise Adam Levine's Team on 'The Voice'
"The Voice" has tapped Stevie Nicks to join the show in season 7. The pop-rock singer/songwriter is set to be an adviser to Adam Levine, sharing her knowledge in music with his proteges.
The two have collaborated on the show back in the first season finale, when Nicks performed "Landslide" with Team Adam. Adam's contestant Javier Colon ended up winning the title.
Speaking of her past experience on "The Voice", the Fleetwood Mac member told Extra, "I won the first season, actually. I did! I flew in, barely made the show, no rehearsal, then Javier won. I looked at Adam and went, 'He won!' "
They went on joking about how Adam persuaded Stevie to join. "Bribery, begging, pleading," the Maroon 5 frontman said, with Stevie adding, "Presents... fur coat, some beautiful shoes, sheets."
"The Voice" season 7 will kick off Monday, September 22 at 8 P.M. on NBC. Blake Shelton also returns as a coach, joined by Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams on the panel.

They're currently filming right now.....if the past is anything to go on, she should be on the show around three or four weeks.
As for it being "beneath" her.....get over it! New times require new marketing tools, and this is one of the best! Things like her appearances on "Idol", "Glee" and "American Horror Story" have gotten her more press (and sales!) than she's had in years! How many other 66 year old's can say that?!?
As for it cutting in to the recording of the new FM album......it was never....I repeat....NEVER....planned to be out in 2014....so nothing is "collecting dust!" Once again, this can only help things!

I'm not a big fan of these singing talent shows either, but they're popular and get huge ratings.
For Stevie, it's great exposure and smart business.

That was the only tweet you chose to share on the subject?
Anyway... I can understand where some are coming from, but I don't think this is "beneath" Stevie. In fact, it's pretty damn shrewd of her. These shows reach millions of viewers, and while The Voice isn't everyone's cup of tea (admittedly, I'm not one of its viewers either), it's not a tacky, bottom-of-the-barrel show by any means. So she's far from slumming. Meanwhile, this is going to result in amazing promotion for Stevie & Fleetwood Mac.

Great marketing indeed and far better than ANYTHING Warner's will do for her...
I would imagine the contestants will perform at least a couple of songs Stevie has written...
I gather the show is filmed in advance so if Stevie wanted to be really sneaky and smart she could try to have a few of the songs from her upcoming album performed for the show which sounds like it will air sometime around when 24 Karat Gold is due to be released...

No judgments -- it just seemed odd that, with the countless positive tweets on the topic, you bothered to share a snarky one. But, hey, if it's the only one you saw, it's the only one you saw.
The ONLY reason she is doing this stuff is for the promotion of STEVIE NICKS. Remember, she isn't selling records anymore and isn't getting "new" airplay. This is the only venue (TV) left for artists her age to promote themselves.

I wonder if Stevie will make the top 10 with the new album. 'In Your Dreams' debuted at #6 with 52,000 copies sold, and if the album sold that figure now then it would debut at about #4 as the top 5 sells a lot less than it did three years ago.
If she did then that would mean that she would have three consecutive top 10 studio albums which is quite impressive for someone who is also part of a band.

I agree. I, too cringed at this news. I realize that times have changed, but I love the romantic ideal of the travelling band riding around touring small clubs while they're trying to make it. And I know it's kind of silly, but I find these shows patently offensive. It just seems like an incredibly lazy way to pursue an ambition. You want to be a singer? Start a band and get out on the road. Maybe that's not how it's done anymore. Sigh.
And, furthermore, I believe it totally takes away from the "mystery of aura" that Stevie has worked all these decades to create. :distress:

Well stated. As this point in her career, Stevie's income and status DOES NOT DEPEND on getting radio airplay or gaining another Billboard Top 40 hit. Her iconic status has been gained with class and credibility. The current Fleetwood Mac tour is SOLD OUT coast to coast, you can't even get a ticket where I live. This was all done BEFORE she agreed to appear on a reality signing contest. I'm sorry, but I don't think Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks need an appearance on reality television to promote anything.

I agree. This is one of the greatest women of rock and roll; a woman who ran in circles with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Mike Campbell, Linda Ronstadt, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Bob Welch, Don Henley and The Eagles, and Dennis Wilson.
I do not put her name in a class with the likes of Paula Abdul, Shakira, Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Blake Shelton or CeeLo Green. She doesn't need this to sell records. Some half brained agent/publicist is behind this.

BUNK!!! She's also doing it because she believes in paying it forward! This is not about selling records. Ask Lindsey Buckingham. In 10 years, Blake Shelton and Keith Urban's name will never be mentioned in the same class as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty or anyone else in that first group. From an artistic standpoint, Shelton and Urban are not even on the same playing field. But, we all have our valid opinions. Personally, I don't buy music or follow artists in regard to Top 40 appeal and marketable sound. The state of the industry today is in shambles. There's no credibility left in today's popular music and the artists are about as deep as a mud puddle. Careers are made based on reality singing contests and karaoke competitions. How sad. There was a time when major record labels found artists with substance and nurtured their careers. Sadly, this philosophy of making music started to disappear in the late 80's and is now non existent. Stevie herself said that the record business is dead. But, what the heck, queue of the karaoke tracks, folks, let's get some kids at the local mall and go make some music!

There's a big difference between the 1st group & the 2nd group...
The artists in the 1st group are legendary singers, songwriters and musicians while the "media personalities" in the second group are simply a corporate product and some are simply famous for being famous...
While Stevie continues to sing the praises of how great she likes working with Dave Stewart she is apparently unwilling to follow his lead when it comes to self promotion via social media...Yes she has a "verified" twitter with 43,000 followers but will Stevie take full advantage of being on "reality show" and tweet/use social media to keep her fans up to date about what is happening on "The Voice" ??? Most likely not...While it's great Dave is keeping us in the loop Stevie should be the one tweeting info not Dave...

Word.
We've all questioned her and Fleetwood Mac's management decisions at times, but this will be good for her and FM. Sadly or not sadly, it's all about exposure these days. People's attention spans are for sh*t nowadays.
As far as the tweet about it being "ironic" that Stevie is mentoring young voices, whatever. Stevie has one of those voices that some people just don't like, and some of those people even write on this board. I get that - for example, I never could stand Neil Young's voice. To each his own. But I'm pretty sure Stevie has enough fans to compensate for those that dislike her.

Can I quickly put a word in for Keith Urban? I mean, yes, he's not 'legendary' and he's not the bestest thing ever but I wouldn't exactly just stick him straight in the 'corporate product' category, either. He's a good guitar player and not half bad at writing songs. He IS an artist even if he does pimp himself out to a couple of (singing) reality TV shows. It's money, it's publicity, it doesn't negate actual talent or artistry.
In terms of Stevie going on, she doesn't have a social media presence (which can help garner attention) and she's in her sixties; going on a show like this can only help her at this stage. She's gone on The Voice and American Idol before, even in a lesser capacity, and all it did was raise her profile. It's kind of sad that the business has come to this but it's not some measure of patheticness, an appearance. The 'aura of mystery' thing is just part of the image, and one which I don't think is ruined by occasional glimpses at the person/a on the telly, not being all mysterious but giving solid, helpful advice instead. Rather, it gets her name out there and that's all too important, if not for sales, then for her legacy. We've seen the term 'legend', 'popular', 'beloved', 'icon' etc thrown around a lot more recently, not just because of her age, but because appearing on various things - and being praised by those on those things - makes her more known. If she's careful about it, it just calls attention to HER, her image and her music. She's not suddenly going to be known by the majority as 'The Voice star Stevie Nicks'. It's (nearly) all for the legacy, exposure and the publicity. And why not.
It confounds me that some people here are referring to Stevie's 'smart business sense' and supposed shrewdness as if they were positive traits. What happened to the sweet little dreamer who only cared about art? I guess she simply morphed into a money-hungry egomaniac many moons ago or perhaps she had just been concealing that side of her character? If only she concentrated on the things that mattered and retained some dignity as a person. It's been a sad decline for the old girl.

I've never understood why it has to be an either/or proposition. You can't be devoted to your art and want to make money? They're not mutually exclusive.
And, seriously, she's going to offer advice to aspiring singers on a handful of episodes of a TV show. It's not like she's hocking a line of hair-care products or skin creams on QVC. I honestly don't see how she's damaging her credibility or her dignity with this.

waxing philosophically, I have been wondering if she feels ever more aware of having traveled some 4/5ths of her way, this perhaps creating the strong urge to give, produce, work, increase what she leaves behind with ever greater urgency while still able. Specially since this will be her one legacy, she has no long life partner or children.
I applaud anyone who keeps busy and keeps trying different things, even past retirement age.
So I say, whatever floats her boat. Open a Stevie Nicks Ice Creame Shoppe with treats served in boot-shaped cones or what not. Live it up. Now's the time.
She can be mystic in death, after.

Exactly. I doubt she's making that much money from the guest spots, but she is getting publicity and reaching audiences she couldn't reach any other way. Why is appearing on The Voice any less genuine than showing up on Ellen or Letterman?

I've been a fan since the mid 197os ..Stevie was never just a sweet little dreamer that only cared about art,..she was the most vocal critic in the band about most everything about the defiantly artsy Tusk album,....even though her songs on it turned out to be the artistic highlight of that album .

And there's really no other way to get famous besides competitions these days since record labels don't wanna get off their lazy butts and find talent themselves.

I watched The Voice in the UK for the first season and enjoyed it. I haven't watched it since as I got tired of the format. However, it is still very popular, and one of our music legends - Tom Jones, has been on it every season. I'm sure it's only been a good thing for his career. He has reached a whole new audience, and won the hearts of many new fans young and old, and he's 74. I know that some of these shows are quite tacky (I used to really hate them) but I can see their appeal, especially on long dark winter nights. I see absolutely nothing wrong or dismal about Stevie taking part. I'm glad that she doesn't see herself as above appearing on The Voice. I think she should just enjoy whatever she choses to do, and I'm sure many people on the show will enjoy her being there.
This is so fun! But she looks atrocious in that video...sorry! It's the glasses!
Have to disagree I think she looks amazing....
I love the photo where she 's laughing.

And, seriously, she's going to offer advice to aspiring singers on a handful of episodes of a TV show. It's not like she's hocking a line of hair-care products or skin creams on QVC. I honestly don't see how she's damaging her credibility or her dignity with this.
When Stevie did one-off appearances on Dancing With The Stars, American Idol, The Voice, etc recently I groaned- but realized this is what celebs must do these days to promote themselves. I didn't like Stevie appearing on any of these shows, but I also knew it was smart business and it wouldn't hurt her status.
However, Stevie is joining the cast of a reality show this time- not just making a one-off appearance. That's what I'm not okay with. I think it could be mostly agreed around here that Steven Tyler resides in roughly the same echelon that Stevie does- lead singer of an iconic 1970s band. However, I definitely feel Steven has tainted the Aerosmith brand by becoming an American Idol judge. There's such a thing as too much exposure, especially if it starts eroding into your collective identity. Steven Tyler is no longer just an iconic rock star anymore- he's also a reality show host & judge. THAT cheapens his & his band's image. THAT'S why I'm not okay with Stevie doing this. She's supposed to be this mystical, elusive rock star... not a game show host.

I agree with you about her status, but maybe she is not going to have enough free time to be a judge. She has other stuff to do.

Stevie will not be a judge on The Voice, just an advisor to contestants like Michael Buble, Cher, Miranda Lambert, etc. did during their turns on the show. They give advice and support to the contestants on the show for the various judges. The advisors aren't really even on the show that much.
I wish she was working with Gwen Stefani instead of Adam, but whatev.

Very well stated and I agree 100%. As I said previously, Stevie has spent her career running in the circles of very respected musicians and artists, NOT pop tarts and game show hosts. Going on "Dancing with the Stars" or "Ellen" and performing your new single to promote the record is one thing, joining the cast of judges and mentors is another. Performing on the Grammys with Taylor Swift, I think not! I think some half brained agent or publicist has talked her into this! Liz Rosenberg, damn you!

I've been a fan since the mid 197os ..Stevie was never just a sweet little dreamer that only cared about art,..she was the most vocal critic in the band about most everything about the defiantly artsy Tusk album,....even though her songs on it turned out to be the artistic highlight of that album .
Stevie's ambition was to be a STAR. She's always made that her priority-- and Keith Olsen confirms that she was focused on being a star from the beginning. In an interview in the 70s she said she wanted to become a famous rock star, a "beloved character" in rock and roll history. Well, she did it. But you have to WANT it. And she did. Her doing these shows is her way of staying in people's consciousness and solidifying her image as a legend.

:sorry:
Agree. Besides, I remember Stevie saying she didn't watch these shows. They're just formulaic singing. Stevie assisting a pop tart? Stevie's too big for this silliness.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about Stevie being on The Voice. But they aren't mixed too much. Regardless of my feelings on any of these shows - DWTS, AI, The Voice, AGT, Grammies, CMAs, etc, they get huge ratings as whole. They are truly on the edge of the coveted audience of advertisers.
Liz is very smart to get her on any and all of these shows. It is tough to say how much exposure she gets from them, but I bet catalogue sales spike for her every time she is out there. That equals money. And it also equals young people who may become US. It exposes her to tons of kids who will never hear her on the radio and some will become crazy groupies like we are who go to shows, buy her entire catalogue, etc. It is a genius strategy to keep her in the spotlight. It reawakens her older audience of fraus and old men who loved her back in the day. And it showcases her to all the emo kids, real musicians, bad ass girls and gay boys who are under 30 and love real music. Get real folks. Where the hell else are they going to hear her?
I think this is a pretty awesome move. At this point, Stevie's ICON status is bulletproof.
It cannot be diminished. It can only be burnished. Liz has seen to that. And in the arena of self interest, I work on pretty much all the above mentioned shows or my friends do. So I get to go to rehearsals and tape days and hang with her. So I say bring it on. This works for me.

Precisely. I don't mean this with any disrespect at all, but I'm sorry--moves like this are just cheesy and lame. I think a lot of people love Stevie because of purity of her choices in life and the fact that as soon as she became famous she didn't try to become a 'model/actress/producer/perfume and haircare and skincare hawker/Proactive spokesperson.' Your mileage may vary, but, for me, this is kind of embarrassing. And now I'm going to have to endure all of my acquaintances sending me clips from the show because they 'know I love Stevie!' Sigh. For the record, I loved Stevie's involvement on Glee and AHS, but this? I just find it distasteful.

Her involvement with Glee wasn't that different. She went to the set to be a source of encouragement and inspritation, just as she will be doing with contestants on The Voice. And even though she was playing a (fictionalized) version of herself, the AHS gig was dabbling in acting, so I'm not sure why that is more palatable than being a mentor in a singing competition.

Oh, I realize that. I was being a little facetious because I remember a time when Stevie said something like she could have gotten out there and become involved in a lot of different things like Madonna did, but she decided not to do that, and I always admired her for that--AND because it seems as if a lot of stars today have no problem with putting their name of just about anything to make a buck. I never thought of Stevie that way, and I thought it gave some of us idealists out here hope that it is possible to follow Polonius's advice of "to thine own self be true."
In the case of Glee, I see it as a lot different because these are actors who are doing Stevie's songs--AHS was exciting because some of it was designed around the mystical aura of Stevie Nicks. I find these singing competitions lame, so I hate to see someone I adore within 50 feet of them.
Again--my apologies to people who like these shows. I have things I watch on tv that a lot of people think are stupid--myself included-ha!

When Stevie was on "American Idol" she received nothing but praise and respect from all involved with the show because of all the time and effort she put into her appearance so I don't see why her being on "The voice" will be any different other than the fact that it sounds like she will be a bit more involved with the Voice than she was on Idol...
Like it or not shows like this are the way things are done now so if Stevie wants to keep herself and her band in the public eye then she has to interact with the younger generation and shows like this are what they are watching...

AMEN to that statement!!! I have supported Stevie Nicks' career for 37 years year. I've ran to every tour, bought every record the day it was released, and clamored for any sight I could get of the High Priestess. The fantastic thing about Stevie is that, even when her "cool factor" was waning in the late 80's, she NEVER SOLD OUT. When agents and record company slimes were insisting that she change with the times, she stood firm. There was a time when record company execs told her that if she didn't start recording songs from OUTSIDE WRITERS, that her career was OVER! She tried it once (TIMESPACE), and then snapped to her senses. Someone who hangs out with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty is NOT going to record cheesy pop songs by Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly and Holly Knight.
When I was a child in the 70's and 80's, there were sometimes VERY FEW places that you could see Stevie, other than occasionally on MTV. She was very seldom on The Tonight Show or Late Night (until about 1998). She never performed on American Bandstand, The American Music Awards, Grammys, or any other outlets. To my amazement, she made two appearances on the tacky weekly show "Solid Gold", where it was the producer’s policy that ALL acts lip sync. Stevie was one of only 2-3 artists to refuse, thank God! All of that LIMITED EXPOSURE, yet she still managed to become a ROCK ICON in 2014. Why? Mostly because of her brilliant songwriting and style. But, also because SHE REFUSED to walk down the bland road to mediocrity and tastelessness. (SETTING: 1983---Stevie, like it or not, shows like "Star Search with Ed McMahon", "American Bandstand", and "Solid Gold" are vital to your album sales, if you don't appear on them, YOU WON'T HAVE A CAREER IN 20 YEARS, this is how things are done now! STEVIE: Hell no, I pissed the "SG" producers off, they wanted me to lip sync...I don't think so!)
The aging process can be difficult for all of us. Stevie has expressed disappointment that her records don’t sell anymore. Well, unless you run in the likes of Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, or the 15-30 demographic, no one is selling records anymore. It burns my hide that some publicist is convincing Stevie that she must resort to appearances on bland and uninteresting TV shows to remain relevant in today’s market. To hell with the market. This woman doesn’t need record sales! She doesn’t make more than a few cents from each record sold anyway, the record exec demons eat that up. Her solo tours are successful and Fleetwood Mac is red hot! She doesn’t even need a record label, she has enough clout to release the music on her own (as so many respected musicians are doing today). Glee and AHS appearances are tolerable, because they still have somewhat of a “coolness” about them. But now, Liz Rosenberg (also Madonna’s publicist) is trying to pimp Stevie out to mentoring a karaoke contest! Liz, with all due respect, how dare you! Stevie Nicks, get another management team before you end up starring in your own reality show in an attempt to sell records. These people do not have your best interests at heart.

You don't have to apologize for not liking singing competitions. But to me, Stevie's appearance on them doesn't mean she isn't being true to herself. She's always been interested in helping people, and she has always wanted young artists to get a break, especially given how hard it has become.
And maybe these shows do have their cheesey moments, and maybe some of the contestants are products of an age where style matters more than substance, but there have been some brilliantly talented people who have gotten their start on these shows.

Christy (wondergirl9847) already pointed out what I was going to mention -- the advisers and mentors on these shows don't have nearly the level of involvement as the actual judges. Stevie won't be as visible as Steven Tyler was on American Idol, so I don't think she'll be in much danger of over-exposing herself.
Trust me, I've always loved Stevie's mystical & elusive qualities, too, but for an artist who had long been criticized as being out-of-touch and unrelatable, it's been fun to see this more accessible, down-to-earth side of her. We always knew it was there -- but everyone else is seeing it now, too. Plus, it seems the level of goodwill people have towards her, has increased exponentially as they've seen this side of her. That's not a bad thing.

Thank you! The points you made are so well stated. I understand the concerns people have about her appearing on The Voice. Some call it a sell-out. I see it as a smart business/PR move.
Just recall what Joe Perry from Aerosmith said about Steven Tyler joining American Idol. He had some of the same reservations that Stevie's fans have. Over time, he realized that it didn't tarnish their reputation; on the contrary, the exposure invigorated their fan base and the band gained a new generation of fans. As a result, they sold more records.
(on a side note: I loved that Steven Tyler was in the audience when Stevie appeared on Crossroads with Lady Antebellum, a band who were completely blown away by her talent and emotionally affected by her advice).
While record sales may be one factor, Stevie is a natural mentor/teacher; she genuinely enjoys helping, and imparting her worldly rock and roll wisdom to a new generation. Phillip Phillips said, of all the mentors, Stevie gave him the best, most useful advice. She obviously has a gift for it. This is the perfect outlet for her!

I'm 16, and the first time I heard of Stevie Nicks was when I was watching American Horror Story: Coven. I got interested when I saw Misty Day talk about 'finding her tribe' while Sara played in the background; and by the time Misty twirled about her swamp cabin (I think to Rhiannon?), I was enchanted. Now I've spent hours looking at photos, and researching, and watching videos of performances. I've got album upon album upon mystery recording in my iTunes, a few vinyl records, and a love for Stevie, through her good times and bad times and terrible times, that quite frankly freaks my friends out. (They're used to me going on about Lady Gaga and Florence Welch and various young actresses, but a 66-year-old? Whaaaaat?)
But my point is, that I would still have no idea who Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac were, if it weren't for the exposure Stevie got from being on AHS. And there's heaps and heaps of other teens and young adults out there like me, who've been introduced to Stevie and FM through AHS, and who are now passionate about the people and the music. I follow teenagers on Tumblr and Twitter who are doing their homework while Bella Donna plays in the background, who are rocking Tusk buns and who are writing poetry about the feelings you get when you listen to Landslide. These are young people who are probably going to have this love for Stevie for years to come- I know I will- but they wouldn't if they hadn't been exposed to her via AHS.
So all in all, I think Stevie being on The Voice is a good idea. I've never seen an episode of it in my life- I'm not one for shows like that- but from the sounds of it, Stevie's going to get to be a temporary fairy godmother to people on the show, maybe get a little promotion for 24 Karat Gold and the FM tour, and spread her witchy wonderfulness to people who otherwise wouldn't have known all that much about her. :)

These shows are cheesy and I don't watch them. If Madonna was a mentor it would be cheesy because she ain't a singer. But Stevie is a legend. She will coach them and work hard to help. Someone like Britney Spears just uses these things for publicity. Stevie get publicity too, but a whole lot more. Her talent is show cased and so is her dedication. Remember cross road with that country band? Stevie listened to all thier music and suggested songs her self. A publicist didn't choose.

You, or whoever you hire. But with digital distribution it's fairly easy, as you can imagine.
Let's make no mistake, Stevie has a long history of making career choices based on commercial interest. While "selling out" isn't a phrase I'm fond of, if that's the one people are invoking, then so be it. When Stevie said "I don't want to sing other people's songs" back in 1981, and Jimmy Iovine said "Well, tough, because you won't sell any records if you don't put SDMHA on this album as the lead single", and she did what he said, that was a huge moment of "selling out" and has set the tone for many of her solo career choices since. There seem to be some revisionist historians in this thread.
Re: Stevie on The Voice: The title of this thread/its source is overstating, as has been pointed out. It's certainly not the same as her being an actual judge. All it'll amount to is a few video montages of her helping young contestants in singing rehearsal, and probably a lot of footage of them raving about how awesome she is and how much they love her and what an a amazing thing it is to be in the same room as her. Can anyone really say they're surprised that such a scenario might appeal to her? Even without the potential commercial benefits?
I say go for it, Stevie. I don't like these shows. She clearly does and has said so for many years. As long as it doesn't get in the way of her artistic output which I am interested in, more power to her.

Liz Rozenburg isn't trying to pimp Stevie out. She is just along for the ride. Stevie is lucky to get the gig. It further solidifies her legend status and she doesn't have to do much work.

Here's my 2 cents.
First, I"m not famous, and my livelihood doesn't depend on what other people think of me, so I can't really imagine how it must be for someone in Stevie's shoes to become, over time, less and less marketable. As a fan, I sit here and think to myself that Stevie must have enough money to last her the rest of her life, and she has to realize that she has made music on her own and with Fleetwood Mac that will live on long past her own life. But again, I'm not her, and I can't really judge her since I have not, and never will be, in her shoes.
But as a fan, I do have an opinion, though again, it's not like I'm really criticizing Stevie. It's more my own inability to understand her.
I really dislike all of those shows like The Voice and America's Got Talent and what not. To me, the reduce music to its most base form. Yes, the people have good voices, and I'm sure they have had to put in a ton of hard work, but none of the music they make rises above insipid glorified karaoke. There is no soul in any of it. Stevie's music, whether you are a fan or not, is iconic. Her lyrics, her stile, and her messages are original. Even people who don't like her would I think admit that she wrote and performed songs that didn't sound like anyone else's. Dreams didn't sound like anything before it. Ditto Edge of Seventeen. Ditto Sara. I think when she did started making music that sounded like other people was when she started recording other people's songs on her solo CDs. In my opinion, Every Day may as well have come from American Idol. It's boring and has nothing of Stevie in it.
Anyway, I personally have no interest in her on those shows. Of course I watch on youtube so I can just see her parts, just because I feel like I have to, and not really because I want to, if that makes any sense. If she makes more fans who are younger and are only exposed to her because of those appearances, then great for her, but there is still this little voice inside of me that objects, that thinks that she could do a lot less of all that and still give us some great music, both live and recorded. But again, maybe that's just my personal bias.
I guess my real message is that she should do what she wants, even if people like me think that it's not really in her interest.

All of this makes complete sense, and I agree 100%. I love Stevie's music, but I also find the story of her magical life very appealing. I love the story of her leaving from school and work to rush to the coffee plant and work on music with Lindsey, and the stories of Stevie and Christine sleeping on speakers in the back of a station wagon to get to gigs (THAT is gangster!) There is a beauty and a purity to FM and Stevie's meteoric rise into Rock and Roll royalty, and, to me, a singing competition seems out of place in that story.

Have people gone daffy? Stevie is smart. She sold out long ago and that is why Fleetwood Mac can sell out stadiums.
It this a bad thing, capitalizing on your work and legacy? She's still a viable artist, making new music, and is branching out in other areas.
I understand that she is not as prolific as some other artists, and I don't hide my criticism that she relies and dwells too much on her past glories. But she's got bills to pay, just like everyone else. Artists often have to balance their artistic proclivities with sound financial/business decisions. Working (and staying) in the entertainment world is no cake walk.

I think there are some misguided expectations here. Stevie is a legacy artist. She is not expected to be cutting edge or rebellious at this stage of her career. These are youthful ideals, not ones of a proven, established artist. She's already accomplished everything and more. This is the "retirement" phase of her career, so everything else she does at this point are just bucket list items. It's silly to say she's selling out because that is to suggest she has no other choice but to accept "her fate" as a guest mentor.

While it is true that Jimmy Iovine advised Stevie to record "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and release it as the lead single from "Bella Donna", I hardly consider this "selling out", at least in the terms that many artists in rock n roll history have sold out. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were not only a well respected band in musician circles, but a band THAT STEVIE GREATLY ADMIRED and was almost obsessed with. She is jokingly referred to as "an honorary Heartbreaker". Moreover, the song itself is far from some cheesy pop song written by Diane Warren or Holly Knight. It is a solid track with a rock n roll sensibility that just works AND has stood the test of time. In my original post, I do acknowledge that Stevie has had brief brushes with attempting to record bland pop material as a means of achieving radio airplay, ("Love's A Hard Game To Play" by Cheez-Whiz king Bret Michaels being the worst offense). I do not deny that Stevie has, at times, walked this road. Thus, I don't feel that I'm attempting to REVISE the history of Stevie Nicks' career as much as simply stating my interpretation.
Stevie Nicks could have "sold out" many times throughout the 80's by recording bland pop songs by Diane Warren, Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly, Holly Knight, Mike Chapman, etc.. These songwriters almost guaranteed hits in the 80's and I think her number of Billboard Top 40's hits in that decade would have been greater had she chosen to take this road. She was advised to record the predictably bland pop song "These Dreams" written by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin, and thankfully refused. The song eventually went to Heart during their 80's sellout phase. Ann and Nancy Wilson will now tell you that the 80's represented an artistic low point for them. Thankfully, Stevie didn't completely follow suit.

Just going back to your original comment, you seemed to suggest that Stevie's participation in the voice was unprecedented in its commercialism and inappropriate given the nature of her career, and I was simply disagreeing with that and cited one of many instances in which she admitted to making a completely commercial career choice. Let's face it, this happened more than a few times between RAL and SA, and not every song she chose for its commercial sound was as iconic as SDMHA. And hey, I like These Dreams, and I like a lot of Diane Warren songs. I don't accept your premise that those songs are inherently more sell-out-y than songs like SDMHA or Talk to Me (a song she admits to initially disliking when she first tried recording it).
My point is simply that while Stevie participating in The Voice may seem uncharacteristically commercial to you, I don't see it that way at all. And commercialism aside, she's gone on record saying she likes those shows, and is at an age where she can do what she likes.

If "selling out" equates with doing what you have to do
to keep doing what you love to do, then I have no issue with it. It's a balance between commercialism and artistry.
The music industry is a hard business that has gotten tougher to break into and sustain. Most marketing is geared to the youth culture, making it especially challenging for aging stars to maintain their livelihood. Stevie is doing exactly what she has to do to stay visible and viable. Most notably, her intentions are authentic.
If "selling out" equates with doing what you have to do
to keep doing what you love to do, then I have no issue with it. It's a balance between commercialism and artistry.
"Selling out", I think, is simply a way people choose to frame something if they want to respond with righteous indignation when an artist does something that they don't really like. It's a rather farcical and irritating phrase all around. But I think if you are going to choose to use it, you need to at least be consistent about it. And to me it's plainest definition is valuing commercial interest over artistic interest, and frankly, if putting a song that you don't even like on your record because you think it'll sell better isn't "selling out" then I don't know what is. Surely appearing on a reality show that you're a fan of would be far lower on the sellout scale.
What I'm getting from this thread is that people don't like Stevie appearing on The Voice because... Well... They don't like the show very much. And that's basically it. Which is fine as far as it goes. I just think trying to intellectualise it into something more than that and trying to spin things into a grand discussion about artistic integrity is a bit silly in this context.

I'm fine with Stevie appearing on The Voice, precisely because I don't think it's something she HAS to do in order to keep doing what she loves. To me it would be sad if she had to take a gig like that in order to pay her property taxes or something. That's always the feeling I get when a nearly forgotten celebrity turns up on a show like Hollywood Squares. But Stevie doesn't need money, and she's still raking in millions every year. She's doing The Voice because she wants to, and that's why I'm fine with it.

Stevie Nicks Says the Team Adam "Voice" Contestants She Mentored Are Like Her "Children"
http://i1361.photobucket.com/albums/r663/Nicksiannation/M_AdamLevineandStevieNicks_091214_zps010c11d3.jpg
The new season of The Voice hasn’t even started yet, but all the scenes featuring the mentors working with each coach’s team have already been recorded. Stevie Nicks, whom you’ll see working with Adam Levine‘s team this season, says she became so attached to the contestants, she feels like their mom.
“I feel very invested in these kids,” Nicks says in the current issue of OUT magazine. “I feel like I have sent 12 children into the world…they are so nervous that you are nervous for them.”
Asked about the advice she gave the contestants, Stevie reveals, “The best thing I actually said to all of them was, ‘No matter what happens after this, just this day, never forget about it. It’s a dream come true. Take everything that happens today and tomorrow with you for the rest of your life and just totally dig on it, and tell everybody the story…because these kinds of times never come again.’”
As for whether or not she and Lindsey Buckingham would have auditioned for The Voice had it been around in their pre-Fleetwood Mac days, when they were a struggling duo, Nicks laughs and says, “I would have dragged Lindsey kicking and screaming. However, yes, we would have. If that was the only way we could get our music across, then no doubt.”
She adds, “He would have hated it, but he would have done it. I would have said, ‘There is no backing out of this — this is the way it is going to be.’ Because one time somebody might see you and say, ‘That girl should be in my movie’ or ‘That guy should be in the next Geico commercial,’ right?”
Stevie’s new solo album, 24 Karat Gold, arrives October 7. It’s a collection of songs she wrote between 1969 and 1987, but never recorded. She tells OUT that her favorite is “Mabel Normand,” about a real-life 1920s silent movie star who was a cocaine addict, as Nicks herself was. Normand died in part from her addiction, so Stevie wrote the song as a kind of cautionary tale.
“I wanted it to be something that somebody having a problem with drugs can sit down and listen to 5,000 times,” she says. “Try to let it be an epiphany for you, 18-year-old person that is doing a lot of coke and smoking heroin and taking ecstasy and is on a dead-end road to hell…I want them to hear the word ‘cocaine’ and think ‘brain hemorrhage, beauty gone, lines, aging, fat.’”

I love your words of reason and wisdom. I'm resisting defending her choice to be on The Voice; it's a useless en-devour. I just watched first Voice show of the season. The level of musical talent featured was astounding. The show not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's one of the best talent shows on TV.
Stevie is,by no means, "selling out" by being on the show. Her motivation for doing this isn't purely to promote herself, her solo album, or Fleetwood Mac. She's doing it because it's fun for her; she genuinely enjoys advising and sharing her experience and knowledge with the the up and coming generation. This is a great platform for her.
There is a sense of protection I gather from from some of the comments of disdain. It's as if you want preserve concept of what you expect Stevie to be, based in the past, with no consideration given to how the industry /the world has radically changed.

Yes but how many kids know about her? Of course, how many kids still *buy* records either.....I've heard people in their 20s laugh off the concept of "paying for music".

I think Stevie genuinely enjoys offering guidance to young performers. Also, these types of projects are exposing her to a whole new generation. It might annoy some fans that a teenager in 2014 only knows Stevie from American Horror Story, but that very well could be the entry point for someone who goes on to become a lifelong fan.

Stevie Nicks on The Voice "The Battles, Part 3" - October 20th
"THE VOICE"
"THE BATTLES, PART 3"
10/20/2014 (08:00PM - 10:00PM) (Monday) : THE BATTLES CONTINUE- THE COACHES ENLIST FELLOW MUSICIANS STEVIE NICKS, LITTLE BIG TOWN, ALICIA KEYS AND GAVIN ROSSDALE TO PREPARE THEIR ARTISTS FOR BATTLE - The "battle rounds" begin and the coaches enlist the help of the music industry's top recording artists to offer their knowledge and skills as advisers. Adam Levine teams up with Stevie Nicks, Blake Shelton with Little Big Town, Pharrell Williams with Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani with husband Gavin Rossdale. In this phase, the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other in a dueling duet. After the vocal face-off, each coach must choose which artist from their team is the strongest, and has the option of stealing losing artists from an opposing coach. Each coach has two steals during the battle rounds where their artists will proceed to the new knockout rounds. Carson Daly ("Last Call with Carson Daly") hosts.

Sorry to be such a negative voice here (pun intended), but...
First, I hate shows like the Voice. I think the music that it showcases is vapid, lifeless, technically wonderful karaoke. So maybe I'm not a very good person to say anything about Stevie's part in it, and I only saw the snippet posted above (actually, I couldn't even watch the whole thing). Stevie is not a technically polished, wonderful singer. That's one of the things that makes her great. I don't think she has anything of value to add to them really, not because she isn't a good live performer but because she doesn't think about what they think about. Basically, she told them to do what she does. (Turn and look at each other, i.e. Buckingham / Nicks, This is your Landslide moment).
If it helps her sell records, and if she really likes doing it, then awesome, and more power to her. But I totally disagree with the idea which she has said, many times, which is that if she and Lindsey were struggling nowadays, they would be on a program like The Voice. There are tons of singer / songwriters, bands, and musicians that are struggling to get a wider audience, and they are NOT on shows like that.
OK, my rant is over. Watch on to all of you who are diggin' it :)

Yes .I never was a fan of these shows but did enjoy Star Search with Ed McMann.
There was no digital gimmickry with the voices those days.

Exactly!
Stevie Nicks
Lucinda Williams
Kate Bush
Marc Bolan
Antony
Janis Joplin
David Bowie
Marianne Faithfull
Fyfe Dangerfield
Ruth Pointer
Prince
Bryan Ferry
Sade
Patti Smith
Cat Stevens
Every single person listed are my absolute favorites BECAUSE their voices are uniquely distinct...and EVERY ONE of them would have been rejected by The Voice, Idol, AGT, etc because their voices are flawed, never technically perfect, and can't run the gamut in "vocal Olympics".
However, all of these artists share many things that these reality show contestants DO NOT and probably will NEVER have...emotion, creativity, originality, individualistic style and readability.
I also despise these reality shows...but if Stevie has fun and it brings her more exposure, then more power to her!

There are a lot of super-talented singers/performers on The Voice. They shouldn't be dismissed just because they're taking advantage of this platform for mass exposure. Only one or two will be lucky to establish a successful career. Most of them, no matter how good they are, will fall back into obscurity; some will gain varied levels of sustainability.
I'm disappointed by the brief preview clips of Stevie. I guess I should wait and see how this all plays out. But...
The glasses she's wearing are horrible and do her no favors, as well as that black dress. Will that be the only thing she ever wears for the duration of the show? I'm betting on it.
Her low energy is off-putting; I wish she would lighten up a bit; she is too serious and dour. And her self-referential Landslide comment is just so egotistical, and it's getting old. I wish she would get her head out of her ass. I thought we were going to see a lively Stevie infused with excitement; smiling and having fun.
I hope that not every bit of advice she may offer is filtered through a laboriously long well-trodden story about her and Lindsey. She is like a broken record. I know of no other artists that pander and focuses so intensely on their past.

sadly I have to agree with what you've said. After listening to her say much of the same stuff since the 70s, however, I don't expect that will change. She thinks it's what sells-- and let's face it, for her it does. Her comment to Haim about how she's 66 and their tour sold out all their dates in the first week on sale (while a truly admirable accomplishment) tells me that she
believes that she can't change what she says because something else wouldn't be as successful. The old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it"-- well she clearly thinks it ain't broke.
And I gotta agree about the dress and the glasses. She obviously can't get by without the glasses but she could certainly find more flattering frames. I get that she's tinting them to make it harder to see how strong the prescription is, but if they get any darker she'll be Ray Charles.

And those tons of singer/songwriters/bands/musicians are likely to continue to struggle in obscurity. Having the opportunity to promote yourself to millions of people by being on a TV show seems like a great strategy to me.
Are you inferring that it's somehow disingenuous to participate on of those shows in an attempt to be successful?
If I had a band has been slugging it out for years, playing in dive bars, making no money, getting nowhere, with no exposure, and no record contract in sight, I'd jump at the opportunity.
Quite a few who've been on those shows were lucky and smart enough to establish successful, longstanding careers in the entertainment business. That they started out by appearing on a talent show is of no consequence.

Stevie was going to college to become a teacher. So in another life she would have been instructing the youth so this lets her get to experience that in a small regard. And we know she considers herself a mentor to some of the younger women in rock so she must enjoy sharing her wisdom.

Stevie will be on 'The Voice' tonight. Do you think there'll be any mention of '24 Karat Gold'? Do you think even if there is no mention, there'll be a lot of new interest in Stevie's work?
Stevie really needs some extra promotion for the album as it's starting to drop considerably on a lot of charts already. Hopefully she'll end up performing something from the album on the show.

I thought all of this was filmed in July, so I'm not holding my breath for any 24KG promotion or a performance of any of its songs. It's a shame, because when I first heard she was doing the show, I thought it was probably the best promotion she could get for the new album. The song clips and the Facebook updates were great, but those were treats for die-hards who were going to buy the album anyway. The Voice reaches millions people and would really get her out there.

Damien v. Kelli
It was the airport security worker who had survived a fatal shooting vs. the single mom who left teaching to pursue singing. Kelli had the tougher task since she had issues with stage fright and also overthinking the song, the classic “Knock on Wood” (kudos for Adam for clearing something we haven’t heard on the show before). They both did great in rehearsal to the point adviser Stevie Nicks threatened to come back and steal whomever didn’t get chosen. But on battle night, it was all Damien for me.

I wish Stevie would smile more. She has such a beautiful smile. She always looks so serious, maybe it is a very serious show, but I just wish she smiled more.

I think she wants to be serious with the performers and get through to them and get the point across .I noticed Adam was not smiling much too.
She's a business woman on the show lending her talents and years of know how out to them.I wish I had her for a school teacher .I probably be in a better position now if I had a teachers like her.
I love the old R&B tunes. The couple on the show sound great. Stevie likes Diana Ross and the Supremes and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

I'm thinking she needs reading glasses and that's what she chooses to wear.

Well, now that Bono has said he has suffered from glaucoma for years, Stevie will probably think of some reason, if anyone asks her.

Well, she definitely has needed glasses for decades, from all accounts.

Damien Lawson vs. Kelli Douglas
Stevie Nicks pipes up with some expert advice, which is that "That 'knock, knock, knock on wood' part is very important." Yes. The part of the song where you sing the song is very important. Also important: Use your lung-bags to force air out of your song-tube! Don't forget to do the right mouth-shapes for the wordy-sounds!
Brittany Butler vs. Ricky Manning
"I put you guys together because you're like major R&B/soul scary, and you're like major jazzy scary," Pharrell explains to Ricky and Brittany respectively. "You're, like, trying out for the X-Men. There's no need of holding back." Indeed. It's an old showbiz rule: If you can telekinetically refill the special coffee in Uncle Blake's fun-mug, or control the tint of Stevie Nicks's Transitions Lenses with your emotions, that's something the judges are going to want to see.

"Don't try to ever be Christina Aguilera! I can't be her, and neither can you!" shouted Stevie Nicks at one point to two of Adam Levine's singers. Imitation may the most sincere form of flattery, but it may not be what wins a match.
The episode of sudden-death duets were aided with guest mentors: Nicks to Levine, Little Big Town to Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys to Pharrell Williams, and Gavin Rossdale to Gwen Stefani.
'It's a very hard song to sing. Don't ever try and be Christina Aguilera' said Adam's guest adviser Stevie Nicks.

This all just makes me howl with laughter.
Y'all know this is 90 seconds worth of a 4 hour shoot that was filmed weeks if not months ago, right?
And that it was pieced together weeks after the fact. So, the outcomes were already known. After the footage was shot. So the editing is cut together to make a story.
The Voice is unlike Idol, X Factor, AGT, SYTYCD or Dancing With The Stars. It is not LIVE. The Voice is a constructed story with a conclusion that is foregone until the very last night's taping. I am not sure the finale is even live anymore at this point. I can't testify if the finale is live this season.
There is very little, if anything, that is real about this presentation.
That is not to say that Stevie's "performance" is not sincere. I have been at many of these tapings. It is sincere. But The Voice uses what it needs to. Weeks afterwards. There isn't really anything organic about the way the process is presented. When this footage was edited, the results of the following weeks was already known. It is meticulously constructed for maximum dramatic impact.
This show is in no way shape or form "real" in the way Idol, SYTYCD, AGT or DTWS is. I know. I have intimate knowledge of all of them. It is just funny. If only you all could be on these sets while the shows are shot. You would never look at them the same way again. It literally makes me squeal.
No. I can't say any more. The NDA papers I have signed could choke a goat. But you really have NO IDEA.

Stevie Nicks helped Levine coach the battle performance and gave Jamison advice about his nerves.
“The best thing you can do is walk out there with a big attitude and sing the best you can,” said Nicks.
The Fleetwood Mac star’s advice must have worked. Jamison performed like a professional and cool up-and-coming star.

[Excerpt from interview with Matt McAndrew in Philadelphia Inquirer]
David Hiltbrand, Inquirer TV Critic Posted: Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 3:01 AM

TV's top singing competition asks the contestants not to reveal they are on the show until the season starts. That meant McAndrew, 24, was traveling so frequently to Los Angeles for tapings that he had to quit his day jobs: on the crew at Trader Joe's on Market Street and as an instructor at Bach to Rock, the music school in Wayne.
He just couldn't tell anyone why.
"It's so exciting. I'm hanging out with Adam Levine and Stevie Nicks and I can't talk about it," McAndrew says. "I really got a little depressed and more antisocial than I really am. I was avoiding people so they couldn't ask me what I'm doing."

Yeah, Matt's OK. I'm usually all Team Adam, but I find myself liking Reagan & Craig from Blake's team, too

It's a bit caustic to be gloating about getting laughs at the expense of people who might be unaware that the show is time-delayed.
It became very obvious the show is prerecorded. Some fans figured that out. Stevie, while very powerful, doesn't have the power to be in two places at the same time. Her episodes on The Voice aired while she was on the road with Fleetwood Mac.
