Lets find some poems that we have not heard as songs!

Here is one

Stevie Nicks - Get Back On The Plane - Written: September 18, 2001

So with great courage
We
Get back on the plane
We strive to carry on
We break through the pain
The show must go on
We ~
Get back on the plane…

Back to Washington, D.C.
We are smiling
We are dealing with the pain
We’re not crying
The skies are beautiful, starry, and sad~
It seems they understand
They are glad we have come back
We get back –
On the plane…

With full hearts
We ~
Get back on the plane
We are being escorted out of Washington
By an F-16
Nothing is the same
Everything has changed
We~
Get back on the plane

In deep reflection
We~
Get back on the plane
Each night with determination
We consider it again
To NOT go on
Would be a shame…
So we-
Get back on the plane.

Stevie Nicks - City of the Angels - Written: October 8, 2001

It is done
It is over
It was hard
We were good soldiers
We endured-
Across the heartland
We were on a crusade, on a
Mission-
And not afraid-
To admit it
We had each other
We were committed-
We were all in love
And not afraid to-
Admit it-

I said ‘goodbye’ tonight-
But not ‘goodbye’
A small separation-
A moment in time
After where we came from
Priceless- you can’t buy it-
Just like the white winged dove-
It’s no good- crying…
We are all guitar players here
She sighs – (she’s sighing)
What a bond we have made~
For all time-

But then the sword fell
And there was the test
I screamed out for an answer
I confess-
The great spirits came to me-
You must – do this -

It’s not too much for you
It’s not too much stress
It’s about sanity
It’s about their happiness

And to their words, I listened
To my mother
To my prophets
To my musical soulmates
The nucleus that surrounded me
Safe in their protection-
I climbed back up the mountain-
The Gods have been with us
From the very first minute-
That was when I finally-
Took a deep breath
And to all of the rest of you
The saving of my grace-
Inconceivable
Priceless, I’ll always love you
You were
Unbelievable

It's **** like this that makes me eternally grateful Stevie is in the process of recording songs that were written (I assume mostly) during her peak period. Her lyrics become worse with each passing year and I truly fear what she has in store for the Fleetwood Mac album, assuming she will be contributing newly written songs. I can feel a major cringe coming on...

Yeah, these aren't very good. Meandering and meaningless.

Stevie has had moments of brilliance, but not for a while. She's become quite full of herself in her old age and, as a result, isn't as disciplined. She thinks that everything that comes out in first blush is perfect as is and she doesn't put in the work to make it better. Unfortunately, she's chosen to work with someone (Dave Stewart) who doesn't question her lyrical choices or push her to improve.

Though I love many songs on In Your Dreams, there were several that would have been better had she had a good editor. Wide Sargasso Sea is simply a book report set to music; Cheaper than Free is something taken from a school girl's journal; Ghosts are Gone makes no sense at all.

That said, Stevie's voice brings such emotion to whatever she's singing that I can forgive her occasional lyrical inconsistencies, or bad attempts at poetry.

Just my two cents. Don't mean to offend those of you who love everything Stevie writes.

well now to be fair, she didn't (yet) turn these into songs. These are her raw notes, her feelings in the moment that she could go back and rework. She has talked about this before, about, for example Storms, how it is in her journal on one page, and she went back later and put it into rhyme. Until it actually becomes a sucky song, we can't know that it will be a sucky song. ;)

editme2, I agree with everything you have said. Dave is a great fit for Stevie musically (in my opinion), but he wouldn't dare edit her (lyrically). I think he manages to coax great vocal performances from Stevie, knowing just how to encourage more or less as is required, and that's a major hurdle overcome. You don't need to look any further than the stalemate reached between Stevie and Glynn Johns during the Street Angel sessions - bad artist/producer relationship equals even worse vocals, as far as Stevie's concerned. She does not work well under pressure.
The wonderful thing about the upcoming "vault songs" album is that the great compositions are already there, so all we need to be concerned about is killer vocals and appropriate production.
PS All things considered, the lyrics (overall) weren't too bad on the TISL and IYD albums - they could have been so much worse. I still think the re-writes of "Planets Of The Universe" and "Moonlight" were beautifully done. Stevie needs to focus and remember that her best songs didn't come out of her arse...

I truly fear what she has in store for the Fleetwood Mac album

 That makes her participation seem like a threat.

True, but GAG is one of the IYD songs that makes me fill in the blanks and assign a meaning to the song, even if it's just my own meaning, like in the old days. Most of the IYD songs don't do that. So, aside from the fact that it's a rocker -- which I would like to stay in her solo setlist -- I also like it because it makes me imagine things.

I would say that Moonlight is the same. I mean, if I didn't know the Twilight plot and just had those lyrics to work with, they do have a bit of mystery too.

Her "poems" are insufferable, pedestrian ramblings. I wouldn't even classify them as poems. Mostly they are just streams of thought. I see them as raw material in which she draws from when she's constructing a more concise song lyric. She has special talents, but they are limited.
