"24 Karat Gold" Billboard article (http://t.co/moBzbe60oJ)
It's proving to be a very busy year for the legendary Stevie Nicks. Not only is she about to head out on tour with a reunited Fleetwood Mac, but she's also in the midst of finishing up her own new solo album.
Tentatively titled "24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault," Nicks' forthcoming collection includes lost and stray tracks that she's written and recorded through the years, but never made it onto an album. The selections for "24 Karat Gold" were all newly recorded, and co-produced by Nicks, Dave Stewart and Waddy Wachtel.
Nicks' publicist, Liz Rosenberg, says that Nicks hopes to release the album in October on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records. She recently recorded the "24 Karat" tunes in Nashville, and will continue working on the album in Los Angeles.
(The album title presumably refers to Nicks' song "24 Karat Gold," which is widely available on YouTube as a bootleg.)
Nicks says that she just recorded "18 tracks in three weeks" for the album -- saying that it's the "fastest I have ever recorded."
She made those comments last night during her acceptance speech at the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles, where she was honored with the BMI Icon award for her songwriting achievements. Nicks has written or co-written many of her solo hit singles, including "Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove)" and "Stand Back." As part of the band Fleetwood Mac, Nicks wrote or co-wrote such favorites as "Landslide," "Rhiannon" and the No. 1 the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Dreams."
"We went onto YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever ... and we went to Nashville (and recorded them)," Nicks told the Associated Press. "So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24 karat gold songs."
There's no word on if "24 Karat Gold" will feature any special guests, however, with Nicks having been in a collaborative mood lately, one never knows who might turn up on the set. Recently, Nicks performed with Lady Antebellum on the Academy of Country Music Awards (April 6) and on "CMT Crossroads" (Sept. 13, 2013), as well as with Dave Grohl on the "Sound City" soundtrack (2013).
"24 Karat Gold" follows Nicks' last studio effort, 2011's "In Your Dreams," which was also co-produced by Stewart. It debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold 199,000 in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Fleetwood Mac, meanwhile, is also working on new music and will kick off a concert tour starting Sept. 30 in Minneapolis. It will be the band's first trek with singer/songwriter Christine McVie since The Dance Tour in 1997.

Interesting. I would assume that she's going to ask Fleetwood Mac to perform at least one of these songs, since she'll essentially be promoting a solo record while on a band tour?

I hope this is only the first time she does this; revisits the 'vault' that is. It allows her to produce an album so quiclky because the songs are essentially written and mostly fleshed out musically.
I'm pretty darn excited, moreso than I've been for a Stevie album since probably 1989.

Stevie Nicks on the material for her upcoming solo album:
"We went on to YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever, and we picked up all the songs that like -- there was like 25 songs that the fans really wanted me to record, and we picked 18. And we went to Nashville and we recorded 17 songs. So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24-carat gold songs.
NICKS GETS ICONIC, TALKS FLEETWOOD MAC REUNION, NEW SOLO ALBUM AND 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY'
There's a solo album on the way, with 17 so-called "trunk" songs -- things Nicks had written and, in some cases, performed over the years that fans requested be properly recorded and put into an album. A new Fleetwood Mac album is coming, too, as well as a big Mac tour, beginning 30 September in Minneapolis.

I think the fact that 'In Your Dreams' has sold 200,000 copies in the U.S. is pretty fantastic!!! I made a thread saying if anyone knew anything about recent sales figures for the album, let me know and now I know!!! The DVD definitely boosted sales as it has sold another 12,000 copies in a year which isn't bad. At this rate and the current climate of the music business, I wouldn't be surprised if Stevie cracks the top 5 this time on sales of less than 40,000. This is an exciting time to be a FM and Stevie Nicks fan!!!

I don't get the feeling that this album will be as heavily promoted as a release of new material would.I think it is geared toward the hardcores (us) whom she knows will buy it.

My guess is that Stevie owes WB a record and Christine's return has completely screwed up her plans...It was much quicker to record a bunch of "Vault" songs and get the record out of the way...

I'm really excited about this release. This is what we've all been saying forever. She has endless songs at her disposal. Just re record all your old demos and get them "out of he way" so to speak. I really hope most of the songs get the secret love treatment and sound very different and almost recognizable from the demos. Exceptions may include something like all the beautiful worlds and space needle, which are basically perfection as is.

Actually, now that we have a tentative title and release date, it sounds like this is going to be marketed as a retrospective, not a typical solo album. October is typically when all the best-of type collections get released, so I wouldn't be surprised if it actually contains re-recorded Fleetwood Mac/solo material as well.
The new Fleetwood Mac album will probably get released in the spring right after Stevie's release has run its course. Marketing-wise, I think everything is looking pretty good.

With Dave Stewart being involved, I wouldn't be surprised if most or all of those tracks end up on the album. He seems to have yanked Stevie clearly out of her comfort zone, which is the best possible thing that could happen. She needs that sort of empowerment to just let her barriers down & dismiss her reservations. In the 70s & 80s she was fearless & just did what the hell she wanted to. It's good to see Dave helping her return to that form. :)

I was going to be very surprised if they shelved this album for a year after having fast-tracked its recording, but it's still amazing to think that we might get it just six months after finding out she was even recording something new.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Fleetwood Mac's management would want her yakking on about her solo stuff, right?
Even if Stevie doesn't say a word about it in interviews for the tour, it's likely that most articles will mention something along the lines of, "Stevie Nicks, who recently released her 8th solo album...." That's a lot of free publicity right there, without Stevie having to ruffle any feathers.
Plus, she did a few TV interviews to promote 'Soundstage Sessions' between dates on the Unleashed Tour, and those appearances also helped to promote the fact that Fleetwood Mac was out on tour. Which was win-win. So there's potential for the same scenario to play out this time around (there are a few points during October, when there are three & four-day breaks between tour-dates and Stevie could very easily book a couple of non-performing TV appearances).

Wouldn't it be fantastic if they decided to release a deluxe edition of the album that included a second disc with all of the original demos for the songs (nicely remastered of course!)? This is similar to what was done on Michael Jackson's latest posthumous release with a deluxe version.

May 15, 2014 8:45 AM ETMany artists lament the fact that YouTube is filled with bootlegs of their unreleased music, but for Stevie Nicks, this proved to be a tremendous gift. Her entire upcoming album - tentatively titled 24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault - consists of newly recorded versions of obscurities she found on the song/video-sharing website, according to Billboard. The disc, produced by Dave Stewart, guitarist Waddy Wachtel and Nicks herself, is slated to hit shelves in October.
At the BMI Awards, Nicks revealed that she recorded the songs in just three weeks, which she says is a new record for her. "We went onto YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever," she recently told the Associated Press. "And we went to Nashville (and recorded them). So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24 karat gold songs."
"24 Karat Gold" was originally recorded during the sessions for Nicks' 1981 LP Bella Donna. The other tracks from the LP have yet to be announced. Nicks' last album was 2011's In Your Dreams. Much of her time since then has been devoted to Fleetwood Mac. The group hopes to release a new album with Christine McVie when they wrap up their upcoming tour.

Stevie Nicks Is Also Inspired by Stevie Nicks By Maggie Lange
As one does, Stevie Nicks reports that she once tumbled into the Stevie Nicks–specific YouTube rabbit hole. That's a notoriously difficult one to crawl out of — lined with slippery silken fabrics, a dearth of footholds, and whatnot. She told the Associated Press:
We went onto YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever ... and we went to Nashville (and recorded them). So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24 karat gold songs.
But Nicks emerged, and she emerged with inspiration for a new album. How did you emerge from your Fleetwood YouTube fugue state?

I find it extremely amusing that a lot of people who post in this forum, who just two days ago were b**ching and moaning about Stevie "selfishly holding up the process of making the new Fleetwood Mac album" have completely changed their tune after hearing the new announcement and details about her new solo album, and are now jumping up and down with anticipation and track predictions/wish lists.
Me too!!!! Brilliant move on her part and shows she is a generous spirit.

I wouldn't say I'm jumping up and down... but finding out that Stevie's doing nothing but an album full of her famous demos, and is releasing it by October certainly seems like a grand gesture to her fanbase. She's giving us all exactly what we've been clamoring for for eons- a quickly recorded album, and is finally letting some beloved songs see the light of day. What else could we ask for? Plus, this seems to quell my fears of a country album, and the album eating up Fleetwood Mac time. Because it's official now- the album will be out before the new Mac tour begins.
Stevie may be my favorite Mac member, but I'm still a Mac fan first & foremost. I will take a Mac album any day over a solo one. And I won't apologize for that, either. :) Would I still rather Stevie be in the studio recording with Fleetwood Mac rather than making a solo album? Absolutely. But this is the best possible option besides that...

"For What It's Worth" a search for "Stevie Nicks" on twitter shows her new album is quite the topic of conversation...

Agreed. And I hope that they can honestly put this out by October, like they're hoping to do. But knowing Miss Nicks...

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Of course, this also occurred in the lead-up to the In Your Dreams album, even though the criticism wasn't necessarily in regard to the stalling of a Fleetwood Mac album. So many people whinged about Dave's involvement and then did a 180 once the album was released. There are certainly some fickle members on this forum.

So does anyone have any idea which of the demos might go as far back as 1969?

Maybe You Wont Forget Me or Fairwell Failure.
Love those songs. Hope at least one (Farewell Failure would be my pick) got recorded and makes the album.
