Fleetwood Mac Billboard Article Billboard (http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6077606/fleetwood-mac-new-album-studio-christine-mcvie-lindsey-buckingham)
Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie talk about collaborating ahead of the band's upcoming tour. "We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness"
It appears that Christine McVie will be returning to Fleetwood Mac to do more than play some old songs in concert. The group -- sans Stevie Nicks, who was busy with "some other commitments," according to Lindsey Buckingham -- has just finished a nearly two-month run in Studio D at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles, where Fleetwood Mac made 1979's "Tusk" album, working on a batch of new songs by McVie and Buckingham.
"This has kind of been a project in slow motion, that's the only way I can put it," Buckingham tells Billboard. "We got in the studio not knowing what to expect, and the chemistry was just unbelievable... We got eight tracks very far along, like, 75 percent done. It just played out really organically in a way that seemed appropriate." Buckingham says the new songs came from ideas McVie brought into the band, and coupled with material he worked on previously with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the group has "about 14 or 15 things, and some other things we want to get to down the line" even before Nicks begins making contributions.
"We're all very excited about it. Knowing me, I'm going to be pushing for a double album," Buckingham says with a laugh.
Describing the new songs -- which include "Carnival Begin," "Red Sun" and "Too Far Gone" -- McVie says, "There's a wide variety, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs. It's very, very exciting. We get chills when we hear them. They sound really fresh. There's an element, I guess, that hasn't really existed so much in the past although it has been there in the fact Lindsey and I have been collaborating more. We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness and obviously there are parts for Stevie to sing on all of these songs, which she will do eventually."
When the rest of the world hears them remains up in the air, however. Fleetwood Mac released a four-song digital EP in April of 2013, and Buckingham and McVie say they don't expect to have a new album ready before the group's upcoming tour starts September 30 in Minneapolis.
"We haven't finished what we've done here," McVie explains. "these are just tracks with some overdubs, and they're certainly not finished. I go back to England now until the beginning of rehearsals, which is the end of July, and then we're rehearsing and then we're touring, so we won't really have time to (finish the songs). There's some talk about some time next year. Fleetwood Mac always take a long time to make a record -- you know what."
Buckingham concurs, though he acknowledges that there may be a bit of clamor for the new music once word of the sessions leaks out, which may effect the timetable for the material's release. "We want to plant some seeds of awareness about what we're doing," he says. "We won't want to pretend it doesn't exist. We're very proud of it, and we do want to get the word out. But we'll have to see how much clamor there is by the time we get into rehearsal and we have some time to let these seeds grow and see what kind of interest there is. That may inform our decisions one way or the other."
Buckingham, meanwhile, says he's particularly stoked that making new music is part of McVie's return after a 16-year absence. "It just took on a life of its own for sure," he says. "For years I was telling everybody, 'Y'know, she'll never be in the band again. She's gone.' I really believed that. But right now the whole thing has really got such a circular feel to it. And if you're talking about one more act for this play or whatever you want to call it, I can't think of a better way to do it."
Fleetwood Mac formally announced McVie's return in January after she joined the group on stage in London last September. McVie -- who released one solo album, 2004's "In the Meantime," during the interim but mostly spent her time as "a retired lady of leisure with the Range Rover and the Dogs" in rural England -- has gone through therapy to overcome a fear of flying that was one of the reasons he left the group. And she promises that she's back in Fleetwood Mac "for perpetuity, yeah. For as long as I'm around. I'm here. I'm committed." And she adds that returning to the studio with the group was like getting back on the proverbial bike.
"I thought I was going to get nervous coming in the studio, but it's felt very easy and natural," she says. "Before I got to L.A. Lindsey and I had been ping-ponging ideas on computers and that; I'd send him my very, very rough, funky demos and he made some kind of sense out of them and sent them back to me with him playing guitar and they started to turn into really lovely ideas. I really missed playing with them and the chemistry of it all and started to really, really desire to start doing something again, and the only people I could think of that I would have any desire to do anything with would be them, Fleetwood Mac."

Lindsey wants a clamor from the fans. He wants us to help spur things into happening and to do it in time for the FM rehearsals.
I really don't know how to make a clamor. Where should I send my letters Lindsey? You guys don't even have a record company, so it's not as if I can just bombard Warner Bros. with pleas. Where do I go to stage a protest? To whom should I complain?

If Lindsey want's to do something to draw attention to the new songs they should put together a little video for one of the new songs and post it on youtube...I'm quite sure a record company will take notice if they get a MILLION hits...

If Lindsey wants clamor, they need to start being social media savvy. Get the FM twitter account more active. Each band member make a personal twitter, start tweeting about what they're doing... some pictures from the studio, etc. Snippets of what is being worked on. Get it trending.

Nice idea. Even if the video is just them playing the song in the studio, just a little four-piece, I'm sure it could get loads of hits on Youtube.
Right Wild-Hearted about social media. He and Christine were sending songs back and forth to each other via computer, they might as well tweet.

I really understand that the Macsters don't know how to market themselves, but what I don't understand is how they have consistently had managers and PR agents who have been so abysmal at it as well.
They're compared to the Eagles in another thread and think how much more exposure the Eagles get, how much more money the Eagles have made, not because of greater talent or more hits (although their catalog is very impressive), but because of better marketing.
It's a head scratcher.

Stevie has a "Verified" twitter and it has been re-tweeting Dave Stewart's...Since being "Verified" her twitter is gaining about a 1,000 new followers a week...They are clueless about modern media...How hard would it be for them to tweet something or make a little video in the studio and post it on line...They Just Don't Get It...

I'd be more than happy with a double album this time around. Especially if this is the last one we're going to get! A live album from this tour seems like a no brainer, but I'd like to see a second studio album if the 2015 one is just a single album. Pipe dreams, all of them, for now. Also, Christine looks a little less Oompa Loompa in this photo. So that's good. Now she just has to stop wearing those damn clips in her hair.

I think on a certain level FM has a hard time "new-comers" into their inner circle. They've largely got the same people working with and around them that have been for years and years and years and years. Maybe it's loyalty to those people, or maybe it's a reluctance to trust anyone else, who knows. But either way, by not letting anyone new in, they're not very good at keeping up with the times. All things considered, FM do very well for themselves - but think of how much better they could do with the right marketing team behind them?

Like someone else here said, it's crazy that their management are just as bad. Maybe Lindsey is actually inviting us to go down to the studio and bang on the door?

It seems like they both made sure to make the point that the songs definitely aren't finished and there will still be more studio time in the future. Who knows what will happen even in the next few months, during, and after the tour. They could come up with even greater songs and moments on the road!

I feel like if enough people expressed that they NEED to have an online presence, maybe they'd really start to think about it.
They should have been releasing little instagram clips of them in the studio, teasing lyrics on twitter, behind the scenes during rehearsals, etc. etc.

Why is everyone so happy? This has happened the last three tours. They SAY the album will go out after the tour. The reality: they tour for a year, burn out, and go back to solo records. Once this FM tour is over Stevie will go right back to her solo album. I'll be shocked if we ever hear these songs...maybe on a LB solo album.

No, previously Lindsey has said he'd like to go in after the tour to do an album and then it never happens, probably because of Stevie. This time they've actually put 2 months of work into an album before the tour and they've got 14 or 15 songs down. It might still be held up because of Stevie or maybe it won't be. Maybe they're far enough along with it that it will pressure Stevie to commit. But the point is, it's not the same as before. And they won't release songs with Christine and Lindsey along with Mick and John, including probably half of them sung by Christine, on a Lindsey solo album.

Everything old is new again. The current situation reminds me of when Stevie said,
"See when I was in Fleetwood Mac, I'd know by the middle of one of my tours they were already getting mad at me. They'd be waiting for me like anxious cats."
The cats are anxious.
Then she said,
But after Lindsey came and played the inauguration with us, I realized that I could never deal with Fleetwood Mac again unless it would be the five of us. And it will never be that way again.
Well...

They did go in and they actually released some of that music. They didn't put out a full album then because Stevie didn't want to play ball. Now they've got 2/3 of an album and it's still up to Stevie to complete it, but that's a large amount of music they've already recorded and they've talked about it in some detail in published interviews including song titles. We'll hear these songs eventually. They won't go unreleased.

The most recent photo of the two of them it's like that little kid tv show from the 80s where in the world is Carmen San Diego, where in the world is Stevie nicks. Can someone track her down and give us her location? We need her back to finish our album we need you to clamour and find her snap a picture if you can and bring her to the studio for us.
Good grief Stevie will never grow up with the power trips she gets off on making them wait and beg her to join them and puts them off for her not so relevant solo career.
I suspect Lindsey's comment about "clamouring" might be in regard to gauging whether the upcoming tour is extended into 2015 or not. I haven't followed the dates so I don't know whether shows are lined up for next year or not, although I think they might be doing Glastonbury in June 2015 (is that correct?).
Anyway, my point is that maybe Lindsey would prefer to resume work on the album in early 2015 and wants to be in a position where he can convince the greedy (Mick) and the lazy (Stevie) that it's opportune to get the recording finished before another bout of touring? It might possibly come down to (public) desire for a new album as opposed to demand for more touring (ie art versus commerce).
I think it's interesting that Lindsey and Christine have stressed that the 7 or 8 songs they've been working on are by no means finished. Christine also mentions that Stevie will be able to contribute to these recordings, but that will be in addition to the other layers of instrumentation and production etc.
As much as I would have preferred that Stevie had been present for these recent Mac sessions, it's more than likely she would have just been in the way and consequently, become resentful. It's better that she convene with the band when her presence will be truly purposeful.
Speaking of resentment, I'm just annoyed that the band felt it necessary to launch this tour when an album was always in the offing. I couldn't care less for out-of-tune, listless renditions of former glories - I want something new, before they bloody expire.
Plus... props to good ol' Lindsey for dredging up the idea of a double album again. Surely he must get his way this time around? The album's not going to sell in great quantities whether it's a single or double release so they may as well just opt for the latter. Crazy buggers.

Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Stevie will be at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills picking up her "ICON" award so I guess she's quite relevant...So now you know where she is...

Broadcast Music, Inc. will present the BMI Icon Award to legendary songstress Stevie Nicks at its 62nd Annual BMI Pop Awards, slated for Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The invitation-only ceremony will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed pop songs in the United States, with the BMI Pop Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year to be named. The evening will also include an all-star musical tribute to Nicks.
BMI Icons are selected because of their unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. As a BMI Icon, Stevie Nicks will join elite ranks that include Paul Simon, Carole King, David Foster, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, the Jacksons, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, and others.
“Stevie Nicks is an extraordinary songwriter and pedigree artist of stunning genius and unwavering grace, on and off the stage. She has defined an era of pop and rock culture around the world with her brilliance and unforgettable magnificence,” said Barbara Cane, BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles.
The legendary Stevie Nicks has an instantly recognizable voice that rises above all others. It is at once haunting, romantic, filled with mystery and completely unforgettable. Her spectacular talent has brought joy to her millions of fans for generations. With her incomparable songwriting ability, she has received 12 BMI million-performance citations, along with 12 BMI Pop Awards, a BMI Urban Award and a BMI Country Award for such hits as “Dreams,” “Rhiannon,” “Leather and Lace,” “Landslide” and “Gypsy,” among others. With songs such as “Edge of Seventeen” and “Stand Back,” Nicks has earned a top spot among a pedigree of timeless pop rock icons. From the start of her career as a solo artist with the release of her five million-selling debut, Bella Donna, up to her current critically acclaimed album, In Your Dreams, Nicks continues to bedazzle audiences around the world. As a member of the legendary Fleetwood Mac, whose Rumours album was one of the biggest selling records of all time, Nicks’ four-decade career includes induction into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, multiple GRAMMY awards and numerous gold and platinum records. Collectively, these achievements add up to one of the most successful female artists in pop rock history
Surely none of this encourages power trips...

you mean to say that fame has gone to this woman's head and she's trying to hold it over the band that made her famous in the first place? no, that can't be.
so we won't really have time to (finish the songs).
That may inform our decisions one way or the other."
maybe we are reading this clamor thing all wrong - maybe the clamor he's talking about is just tons of public pressure for them to finish up and release that long promised FM album sooner rather than later? without waiting for whatever eventualities to happen. just finish what they have and release it - that is, IF there's enough clamor.
who is WE in we/our decisions? ;)

That's the way I took it...If there is great interest from WB and the fans the band (we) will be more inspired to move the (our) project forward...If WB isn't willing to give FM what it considers a good offer will they indefinitely shelve the project instead of moving to a smaller label...

I laughed out loud when I read Lindsey's remark about the double album. He really has some self spot.
I feel kind of sad about this......
The fact that Christine and Lindsey are in the studio without Stevie--as she is busy " with other commitments ".
But hey wait - " obviously there are parts for Stevie to sing. "
What is Stevie then ? Their backing vocalist ..........
No I'm sad and don't have a good feeling about it....

no, i don't think he's talking about either the record companies or fans such as ~150 people who post here.
he is talking about wider public. casual fans. including all those tens of thousands that fill out arenas at exorbitant prices for FM shows.
LB has gotten over clamoring for record companies' interest long time ago. i would have thought maybe that was just for solo if it wasn't for their EP self-release and Mick saying at the m&gs last year that they are well aware that album will not sell, but they want to put it out because they feel the need to do it.
as for the fans like people here, if they were doing anything for us they'd stop doing GH tours long ago and start playing deep cuts. they can't care less what we think.
i think he's talking about one of the 2 things (possibly both) -
generating public interest in general for new music from the band reunited with CM (and if there's great interest they won't wait for 2015, they might put the album out sooner)
generating enough public push to get Stevie on board, this year (like they did with Playboy interview and singing a message song on his solo tour in 2012)
now, this public clamor is oddly reminiscent of something Stevie said when the EP was coming out - to paraphrase - "if there's enough public interest for this EP, i will agree to a full album with the band." so while the rest of the band wants to put out an album to prove they still have something to say, she was basically saying she only cares to put it out if there's great possibility of a commercial success. remember, "i wanna be a star".

I doubt Stevie conspired with BMI to get an ICON award just so she could hold it over the band's head.

Nice sarcasm, Elle.
But seriously, you diehard fans are giving me a headache. I've been reading the Rumours forum (but not posting very often) and everyone here is so selfish. The group-think seems to be "We need an album and we need it now", and you're all just blind to how the music business works.
Many posters are also ignoring the significant facts that:
- John McVie has cancer, a debilitating illness which takes a long time to fully recover from (some times years).
- Lindsey, Stevie, Mick, John and Christine are human beings first; musicians second. Give them a break. They have lives outside of their musical careers.
An album will probably come out eventually anyway, so why all the ranting and raving from Ledgies?
It's nothing more that trolling.

personally, and morally, i think anybody going on power trips is sad. but yes it's human. and yes people do it, but it doesn't reflect well on them. this whole discussion reminds me of asking people to paint hotel rooms pink and crane-in white pianos. i justified that with being high and drunk and not at her best behavior. power trips now don't have those justifications.
CM or LB get plenty of awards that just a select few received (check the string of her awards in 2012-13 or his awards from 2011-12), and i didn't see their fans trying to use those to justify their going on some power trip with people they knew before they were famous. as far as LB goes, he grew out of his power trips, at least i hope.
Nice sarcasm, Elle.
thank you. she served, so it was too easy. :)
you know, i'm a selfish, non-moral person myself. ;) yes, i have no doubt band worries about what's good for them. so then why wouldn't i worry about what's good for me? :p
plus, band is asking for clamoring. they say they want that album out. so yeah, it's easy then to feel the need to clamor.

The album isn't being delayed by John's illness. He's been an active participant so far. The band's personal life also isn't the reason. If it's being delayed at all it'll be because of Stevie's reluctance to participate. I don't think any other reason will keep it from happening.

I imagine this is disappointing to many, but at the very least, hopefully this puts to rest any speculation that Stevie is at fault for any delay in the album:

"There was never really any intention to try and finish this album and put it out to promote on this particular tour that we're about to embark upon because we all felt that maybe the smart call was to go out and have the novelty of Christine being back in the band be the cleaner and more to-the-point place to start, and so to go out and just re-include her songs in the body of work and have that be pretty much the presentation of that set seemed to be the right thing to do, and then to come back and when we're done with that (tour) and finish this up with Stevie, who has...assured us she will be ready to do that then. And then we'll have something to gout and promote with some new music. So it becomes sort of a long-term plan, so we're all very excited about that."

Scratch my last post. We finally have confirmation of an agreement by Stevie to participate. And that they plan for it to happen following the tour. That's great news. Not disappointing to me at all, because I figured they never had any intention of putting the album out before the tour. I don't think you announce a tour and then several months later announce an album before the tour starts. That just didn't make sense to me. A tour promoting an album is usually announced following at least the announcement of the album.

I entirely agree. Frankly, if they rushed an album out in a few months, I don't think many of us would be too pleased with the result. This allows Stevie to record her solo album, Christine to get back in the groove, and then we get our (hopefully) double FM album.

Well this may be a recent development. Maybe a recent conversation they had. I don't think it's something they knew all along. I'd say their interviews over the past 2 months seem to imply they didn't. In fact, Lindsey said as much in the initial interviews following the tour announcement. But I think even those of us who were skeptical were hoping they would reach some kind of an agreement about it and they did, supposedly. It was just frustrating that no one would a give a confirmation to that effect which is why I think this is a recent thing. Even then, there seems a bit of a skeptical tone in Lindsey's voice when he said it.

It's possible it's a recent development, but it's also very possible she's assured them all along that she will record with them. Like we've discussed before, even though they didn't come right out and say "yes, Stevie will be on this album," they also never used any "ifs" when discussing her working with them. Only that it was a question of "how" and "when." To me that always implied it was an inevitability.
Maybe the reason he's talking about it now, is that they've locked in a time-frame for her involvement.

I agree, it's probably the "when" that's finally been agreed upon. I think most of us assumed, considering they were confident enough to spend two months on new stuff knowing they would never release an album without Stevie (as wishful as some were that they would), that Stevie would participate eventually. But there were theories that she would go off and do her solo thing following this tour....or that she would need a break from the band as she always talks about....so I think the real issue was, well when will she participate so they can get this new album complete. Now we have a tentative time table for it which is great. Hopefully it pans out...that's a long time from now so you never know what could change in the meantime, but at least we know that's the plan.

Oh, I knew they had no intention of putting that album out before the tour, even if the album was already complete they weren't going to put it out. Even if they had already shot the cover and had CDs in packages ready to ship, they weren't putting it out before the tour.
I was hoping that they would put it out before the second leg, but that doesn't seem like it's coming to fruition.
As for Stevie being the reason for the delay, oh I definitely think she's caused a delay in the album. They didn't have her agreement. But I never thought she was the reason it wasn't coming out BEFORE the tour. They were never going to do that anyway.

Using the same Los Angeles studio where the band recorded 1979's Tusk, Fleetwood Mac recently wrapped up nearly two months of sessions that included tracking new material written by returning member Christine McVie.
"We got in the studio not knowing what to expect, and the chemistry was just unbelievable," singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham tells Billboard. "We got eight tracks very far along, like, 75 percent done. It just played out really organically in a way that seemed appropriate."
McVie, whose return to Fleetwood Mac was officially announced in January after a 16-year break, adds, "There's a wide variety, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs. It's very, very exciting. We get chills when we hear them. They sound really fresh."
By Buckingham's count, the band has "about 14 or 15 things" in the works, prompting him to joke that he'll be "pushing for a double album," a la Tusk.
"We haven't finished what we've done here," McVie says. "Fleetwood Mac always take a long time to make a record."
The band will begin rehearsals in July for its North American tour, which starts in Minneapolis on September 30.

I'm sure they resort to press when personal communications reach a stalemate, which is why Mick told Playboy he didn't think FM would ever tour again, when he knew they would. He just didn't have the date for the tour that he wanted, as it was delayed for a year.

Now, I wouldn't want them to do tiny venues or any multiple appearances, but Christine showed up with Mick's band in Hawaii and it would have been sweet if Christine and Lindsey could do a little one off appearance with Mick at the same time at some Hawaiian gig.

yes. and i fully expect it to happen again. you can easily find tweets from young girls saying how they are counting on their "fabulous tits to get them to the stage in front of LB" at upcoming FM shows just like in 2013.
although would you agree that better characterization of that would be ego trip (i'll loosely define it as trying to convince himself he's still hot by having young pretty girls screaming for him) as opposed to a power trip (trying to convince your peers or others that you are more important than them and using that power to get your way)?
Now, I wouldn't want them to do tiny venues or any multiple appearances, but Christine showed up with Mick's band in Hawaii and it would have been sweet if Christine and Lindsey could do a little one off appearance with Mick at the same time at some Hawaiian gig.
That would be a nice little video nugget to have.
Michele
that would be cool. who knows, Christine said she's coming back to the US in July, and Lindsey always mentions he vacations in HI usually in July (different island, but close enough!), so maybe they can make it happen?! how amazing would be to witness that??

Well, although they are different words technically, I'd say "power trip" and "ego trip" are pretty interchangable.

Who says that! Only the classiest of the broads, I'm sure.:lol: Anyways, that's the way it's been done since the beginning of rock n roll, the only difference is social media these days allowing these thoughts to be so readily... vocalized? (Can't find the word I'm looking for.)
I understand that Stevie's lack of involvement in the album so far may have delayed proceedings, but ultimately, it's the band tour that is going to create the biggest delay. I just hope that a second leg doesn't come to fruition so that everyone (including you know who) can reconvene in the studio as of January 2015. I say this in the knowledge that it would mean no Australian shows for this tour as they typically come here in February/March, but I'd much rather forfeit a show and have them resume recording. I also worry that the longer the album is in abeyance, the more likely it could be that it never gets released.

Michele
The Eagles are also clueless about social media. Most of the band isn't even on Twitter, and there's no official band Twitter account. Joe Walsh tweets regularly but it's on his own initiative; Timothy B. Schmit does the same about five times a year.
They do have a Facebook, but it's a pretty generic posting of tour dates and merchandise sales. The band member sites are just carbon copies of the Eagles site all done by the same PR person (people?), with the except of Joe Walsh - he posts his own stuff.
While even this weak social media presence is better than what Fleetwood Mac's, I would hardly credit it for the Eagles' out-performance of Fleetwood Mac in terms of earnings (if they have indeed out-performed them; not sure about the numbers). This is especially true since these sites were all created within the last couple of years.
In terms of the "clamor" Lindsey wants, though, I don't see any place other than social media where it can occur... and this man doesn't even have an official Facebook or Twitter (although people keep assuming that the lndseybuckingham twitter is him just because there's no one else - and whoever runs it has no problem letting people believe that it's Lindsey).

Agreed. I also hope they go into the studio rather than extend the tour. I love going to shows, but after three hours of ecstasy, a show is over; the memories will fade over time and die with the person who experienced them. An album lives on. An album is far more precious.

The three dot pause gave him away!!!
I don't know why it was transcribed like that. The transcription is actually inaccurate. Here is what he says, starting at the pertinent part:
"and then to come back when we're done with that and finish this up with Stevie and to, uh, who has, you know, Stevie has assured us she will be ready to do that then, and uh, and then we'll, we can, you know, we'll have something to go out and promote with some new music."
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=53651
He pauses a lot, so I'm not sure why the dots were added there in the initial transcription when they weren't put elsewhere. Regardless, reading deep significance into what is not an extraordinarily long pause seems a bit of a stretch, to say the least.
This seems like a classic case of people looking for ways to create conflict even though none has been stated.
Fleetwood Mac fans are such a funny bunch. Many of them actually seem to WANT the band members to be at each other's throats! It's interesting.

:distress:no, i don't think he's talking about either the record companies or fans such as ~150 people who post here.
he is talking about wider public. casual fans. including all those tens of thousands that fill out arenas at exorbitant prices for FM shows.
Let's not forget the all important,"I am a rock star, rock stars are not nice".

I mean - I'm not really sure what else Lindsey needs. Large arenas are being almost if not completely sold out at crazy high ticket prices.
There was lots of buzz in the media about Christine's return - plus Stevie has been EVERYWHERE. The band is definitely on the general public's consciousness right now.
I honestly feel like they need to release the album within a year as the iron is hot - but if Lindsey wants more "clamoring" then they NEED to start social media campaigns. It's frustrating because it wouldn't really be that hard to do. One of them should just hire and intern and that would be a fantastic start.

there is no such rumor. while i do understand you were using this just as a jumping board to explain something else, you do know you are leaping off of what was said and accusing LB and others of stuff nobody said it's happening?
if you are talking about what Jamie and i said, nowhere in our posts does it even insinuate he is sleeping with any groupies. so just to make it clear:
just because there is a guy who's with the band (security something or other is his position description in the tourbook) who brings girls to the stage in front of Lindsey does not mean:
that these girls are groupies. they are not. they are just fans who either got lucky or found the way to get to the stage (something most people here want to find the way to do!).
that there's anything else going on. a man who likes to look at hot young girls? how unusual is that?? come on people! he is not automatically sleeping with them.
it works for both these girls and him. he has a lot of energy and nice interactions with them, the same as he has with others in the front.
and, although it doesn't seem a stretch to assume LB is the one requesting this, it may be he's just requesting some young people (and to a security guy for a rock band, hot girls is just a natural interpretation of that request) to be brought up to make sure there is energy exchange between the band and the audience, instead of everybody in the front just sitting like they are at the classical music concert. it's a rock show, and energy feeds energy.

I suspect there's some resentment from Lindsey in the fact that he has shelved or folded multiple of his solo albums into Fleetwood Mac over the years, but Stevie's not doing the same thing in this instance. This isn't just any old Fleetwood Mac project, either- John is battling cancer, and Christine has returned to the band against all odds. Christine's return was supposedly Stevie's biggest wish for the past decade; and instead of being involved with the band during what Lindsey feels is a very crucial period, Stevie is off working on her solo career. I can see how all of these factors combined would upset Lindsey.
However much I may agree with him, I'm not sure Lindsey has much leverage in the situation. After all, he left the band altogether for 10 years in 1987. Then after Say You Will he took recording with Fleetwood Mac off the table for several years while he focused on his solo albums. So it's not like he hasn't done the exact same thing himself. He took care of himself & his needs when he needed to, and Stevie's doing the exact same thing right now.

I have always wondered about this. At the beginning of the Say You Will tour there are several quotes he made about being about keeping the FM thing going- no talk of solo work. Then at the end of that tour he talked about having to put up a fence for 3 years so he could focus on his solo work. I've always wondered what the massive turnabout in the interim was about.

Yes, definitely. That's what he wants the feedback for. That's what he was hoping the EP would do, show her that there was such an interest in an album from ... what? Fans? Record labels? Whatever. He wanted her to see there was an interest and decide to do an album because of that interest. Now, he wants that same thing.

you know i was thinking about that too, considering his apparent tour-album-tour current plans for FM.
he laid out somewhat similar long-term plan in DR doc, during SYW recording. he wanted to put out an FM album, then tour it, then put out another album, and tour that one. he was talking about 4-5 year FM run.
i guess at the time, once he started he was planning on folding all his GOS songs into FM (some of them are still waiting to be released!). maybe some of the band members nixed that plan, and that's why he reverted to one album (but double) and a tour. and they essentially did put out [almost] a double album. then during that tour he started recording new solo material, and considering others were not on board with his album-tour-album-tour 4-year plan anyway, maybe he just basically asked them not to change their mind again, considering he was now working on a solo material that he actually planned to release as a solo material.

That was always funny to me. He said he told them not to come knocking on his door and I didn't believe anyone was knocking, but then when Stevie gave interviews later, she said that he told the band he wanted to focus on his solo career too. So, I then I knew he had said that. But they had also had a disagreement and it was clear she didn't want to work with him after the SYW tour ended as well.

In 2009, Stevie said,
We had a meeting between two and three years ago to talk. Lindsey had really been working hard on his solo work and decided he was going to get those one or two or three CDs done and tour behind them. He ended up using up a lot of his songs for “Say You Will” and that really didn’t fulfill his need to be a solo artist and, well, that album wasn’t the best experience for any of us. Lindsey made a decision to take a couple of years off and work on his solo stuff so he could enjoy Fleetwood Mac again. We all said, “Go ahead, have fun, rock on!”
I asked Lindsey if there was another rarity like “Silver Spring” waiting to be dug out and done live and he wasn’t sure. What do you think?
I suggested that we do “Storms” (from “Tusk”) on this tour. We have never done it onstage. The last tour we pulled “Beautiful Child” out and we’d never done that before and it went great.
Yes, definitely. That's what he wants the feedback for. That's what he was hoping the EP would do, show her that there was such an interest in an album from ... what? Fans? Record labels? Whatever. well, if we go according to what they said, that's what Stevie said she wanted from the EP, in order to convince her she should put her time in more FM recording.
my take was that Lindsey just wanted to put out some new material before that tour since he didn't want to do another purely greatest hits tour. that was the jest of his speech when he was introducing Sad Angel too. they went into the studio, he wanted to perform some of the new material, and since they didn't finish the album at the time, putting some songs out for download was the second best thing. the actual EP format seemed to have been Stevie's idea. at first they were just going to make 2 songs available on itunes - Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy.

Irregardless of Lindsey's most recent comment about Stevie joining them at some point I find it hard to believe Stevie is just going to shelve her new record. If Fleetwood Mac does make another record it probably is going to be their last because we are talking several years down the road before various tours and side projects are wound up.
And for whatever reason (we'll never know the truth) Stevie was done with making any new music after Say You Will until In Your Dreams. She damn near lost relevance by doing umpteen cover songs and just the hits tours. Thank God she saw Moonlight in Australia otherwise I don't know what kind of conversation we'd be having in regards to Fleetwood Mac/Stevie right now. I'm thrilled that Chris has decided to return. But I hope they don't let the opportunity to create another chapter of Fleetwood Mac pass them by by doing what is certain to be another greatest hits tour. Sure they might play some new songs but how much excitement about them can be built when people can't go out and buy it? Not much.

Even for Unleashed when he said there's no new album "yet" I think the purpose was to get the audience to cheer to show her that there was a demand for a new album. But yes, the reason he wants feedback is to sway her, because he wants to make new music, period. I don't think he actually cares about the clamor himself.
I'm still curious about his comment from a few months ago that the record company was pushing for a new album. What record company? It seems highly unlikely that any label would be pushing for it.

Michele
She saw that there was interest... in her doing another solo record. Remember when they were doing press for the EP and he expressed his dismay because the thing she most wanted to talk about was the Buckingham Nicks track? I didn't understand his dismay. Sometimes I think it's a miracle that these two happened in any way. I don't think they really get each other at all and that gap has only continued to widen as the years have gone by. Strange are the ways of a very complicated world indeed... Why did Stevie suggest that track for the EP?

Lindsey looks a lot like my dad. So handsome.
But I hope they don't let the opportunity to create another chapter of Fleetwood Mac pass them by by doing what is certain to be another greatest hits tour. Sure they might play some new songs but how much excitement about them can be built when people can't go out and buy it? Not much.
preach it!
although they did have EP available during the last tour but the way they talked about it during the show, you would never be able to find it unless you knew beforehand what to look for.
In 2009, Stevie said,
yes, but that was everybody's story after the fact. during recording of SYW he had according to DR doc, as Brickney noted, just long-term FM plans album-tour-album-tour. somewhere in the middle of the doc that changed, possibly around the time he started talking about Stevie not wanting to do a long tour to recoup album costs.
so his plans were with FM, and then seemingly during the recording (and not even during the tour) something changed and there was no long-term FM plans anymore. so he started recording solo tracks during the tour and when the tour ended he asked not to come knocking, but there was no plans with FM at the time anyway. so he gave them a heads up. that seems fair.
on a different note, i don't see how him leaving the band can be compared to someone insisting they are staying in the band but apparently resisting almost everything band wants to do?

If Lindsey wants to show Stevie how many people want to hear new music then they should have released a physical copy of Extended Play. I'm on the younger end of the fan spectrum and had no problem downloading it off of iTunes, but I know there are people that didn't bother looking for it or buying it because it was download only. Record Store Day is a great even for something like that! Even a CD in the merch booth would've been fine! The time they try to be hip and use the internet...they fail to also put out a traditional physical product :distress::shrug:

Certainly, when they were promoting SYW, Lindsey said that as far as he was concerned there was no need for him to do any more solo albums, that he could be fulfilled creatively just recording through FM. By the time the tour ended it was clear that no FM record appeared to be in the near future.

It's funny but I really think Stevie is making a solo album for artistic reasons and because Dave makes the recording process fun. However, I don't think she is doing the Fleetwood Mac album for artistic reasons. I think she is doing it because Chris is back and it's a cash grab. i think she has finally turned into a solo artist full throttle.
Who can blame her really? She got really good reviews for her last album and she finally found some magic again. I know she cried and cried over her failures. IYD actually left her with a positive feeling, so much so, that she is not making another album for sales. She actually can enjoy the process.
That being said. I want my Fleetwood Mac album!!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought Chris would be back. It's a miracle really. Then again I never thought Stevie would have 8 studio solo albums. This is really a magic year.

I also posted that I thought Stevie was making her album for artistic reasons in her forum. She knows she is making the money off the high dollar tours and royalties from classics written in the Golden Age so conversely it frees her up to to do what she wants to in her solo career.I had to laugh when Christine said that some of the new songs that Fleetwood Mac were working on were " very commercial"Where does she think they are going to be played :shrug:She may be more actually out of loop than Stevie now.Who would have thought.

I can't decide if this is creepy or hot. Maybe a bit of both, as I find Lindsey too pinched and pink toned for my own tastes. He was sexy from 78-82. All downhill from there.
As far as the album goes, the only way they could have finished one is to push the tour till next spring. No way they would pass up the summer touring season, so this is the only thing that makes sense. Chris gets to become more comfortable, they make a ton of money to finance the record and their other indulgences, and everyone is happy. I suspect it was a group decision. This pack of fools could never have recorded an entire album in this amount of time. It isn't how they work. They know that and any thinking fan does too. It is no surprise Stevie isn't there. Why should she be? To knit? Play tambo while Linds and Chris jam? I am surprised anyone is surprised. This is the way they have always recorded. L and C did their Tango writing thing, and reconnected musically. An important process. They break, and then scoop up tour cash. Then they break again, come back, record Stevie's stuff, she lays down vocals on their songs, and Stevie and Lindsey fight over sequencing and verb tense. She leaves mad, Lindsey finishes mixing and other overdubs, then they angrily tour. Same show, different episode, folks! It's like some of you have never watched a soap opera. Or at least this particular soap opera.

Lindsey is a couple years older than my dad. I also think he was totally hot from 78-82- when he was in his 30's-now now. I think kind of motherly about him- I really want him to have whatever he wants, get to do what he wants- etc. to be happy. Artistically, I just want to observe whatever he puts out there without condition. I don't even like it when people shout out what they want him to sing- I just want him to do whatever's in his heart without distraction. I think the reason I love him is because he often does wear his heart on his sleeve, it's such an endearing thing.

a lot of people are referencing tango as an example of this working model in the past, but I think most people are surprised this method continues because Stevie wasn't happy at all that she was left out of the process, she's talked before about being furious she was barely on that record until she insisted being added to the mix.
With SYW...again I think they got put into a corner. The majority of the album was done by the time Stevie came in and then they were under the gun to finish all of her songs and have her add backing vocals on lindsey's most likely within a certain time frame. Not a lot of room for mistakes or figuring things out. Which is why most likely Stevie was not happy with her songs on SYW, but they were released anyways. It was too late for Stevie to put her foot down or re-do anything.
If Stevie were wise I think she should of worked with Lindsey ahead of time much the way Chris is. Get Chris up the speed but also get the ball rolling with Stevie and at least get the beginnings of one or two of her songs rolling. In general, I just don't think bringing Stevie into a mac record in the 11th hour hasn't and doesn't really work as well as they think it does. It appears that it backfires more than anything. That's just my two cents though, heck I'm not in the studio with them. Only going on what we've heard and seen.

I love Stevie but who cares what she thinks about Tango in the Night. They wanted her to be part of the process and there was always a problem and it wasn't all due to her drug addiction. She only spent two weeks in the studio. And then when she when she heard the final result, she acted like a spoiled brat. Even Chris yelled at her. She got a big head and I think she realizes now that she really lost out on something. Tango in the Night is one of the best album from the 1980s and she is the weak link on the album and it is her own fault.

You almost have to wish there was a documentary done on recording Tango. Quite honestly, after years and years (AND YEARS) of discussing recording Rumours and Tusk...bla bla Sausolito, bla bla Lindsey's garage, yadda yadda yadda....I would have to think a Tango documentary would be incredibly amusing and a much better story. Lindsey whining that he's giving up his solo album for the band...Christine churning out some of her best material ever...Stevie swooping in at the 11th hour and being a piss pot...and naturally, the last scene would have to be the big fight about the tour (a.k.a. Lindsey's Swan Song).

Another reason Stevie should be there is to temper the schmaltz LB and CM come up with when left to their own devices. Mystified and You and I Part II are truly awful songs. I can only assume that they spent a lot of time in elevators together, looking for inspiration.
I listened to TITN all the way through this morning, to see if I'd had a change of heart about these two songs (and Family Man). Nope. I still think they are highly polished sonic turds.
They've done amazing things on CM's songs when he has fleshed out her demos but as co-writers, Blech!

I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear their conversations. I can only imagine the nasty, sarcastic tone and words used during that phone call between Bucky and Stevie-"what the f..k Stevie? We've got some great momentum going for this record and,as usual, your diva pain in the ass has to go and screw it all up.But thanks for assuring us that you'll be here after you're off of your power trip. But we're still going to practically bang each other on stage this tour, right?" Stevie Nicks/Musician, on the reunion of the full superstar configuration of Fleetwood Mac: "Well, Christine (McVie) just decided to come back. She called. We were in Europe last year at the end of the year and she called me and said, 'What would you think if I decided to come back to the band?' And I'm like, 'Well, you've convinced us over 16 years that you were never coming back. You finally, actually convinced us. So, are you kidding?' And she said, 'I'm not kidding.' And I said, 'Well, Chris, have you seen us in concert lately? Because you should see us, because it's very physical. It's almost three hours, and you have to kind of be an athlete. So, get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! So she's, like, rockin.' So she's very excited, and we are very excited for her. "
Steve Nicks/Musician, on reviewing her own compositions: "There's no fluff songs in my songs. And they all meant a lot to me and they were all written about somebody else or about me or about the world or about the country or, you know, there's no just playful no-big-deal songs."
"It's a very, very heavy thing to look back at all the things you've done, especially when that's between 15 years old and 66 years old, and, then, tomorrow, it all starts again with a whole other thing."
Stevie Nicks on the material for her upcoming solo album:
"We went on to YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever, and we picked up all the songs that like -- there was like 25 songs that the fans really wanted me to record, and we picked 18. And we went to Nashville and we recorded 17 songs. So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24-carat gold songs.
Stevie Nicks on acting opposite actress Jessica Lange in "American Horror Story: Coven": "She's amazing. And, so, I just watched her a lot, you know? And I sang, 'Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You' to her, probably like 20 times. And she cried every time. And it was like, 'Oh my god!' It was -- the fact that Ryan (series co-creator and -producer Ryan Murphy) brought me into that was such a gift - nothing like that probably will ever happen to me like that again. 'American Horror Story: Coven'! It's like my dream, you know. (laughs.)"
NICKS GETS ICONIC, TALKS FLEETWOOD MAC REUNION, NEW SOLO ALBUM AND 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY'
Stevie Nicks thought former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie was pulling her leg.
"She called when we were in Europe at the end of last year," explained Nicks. "And (she) said, 'What would you think if I decided to come back to the band?' And I'm like, 'Well, you've convinced us over 16 years that you were never coming back. You finally, actually convinced us. So, are you kidding?'"
She wasn't.
McVie had conquered a longtime fear of flying -- a fear so crippling that, in 1998, it forced her to retire from one of the world's busiest touring bands.
McVie spent most of the time between then and now at her mansion in rural northern England.
With McVie's return, Fleetwood Mac is finally back to its most successful configuration, also including Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and Christin's ex-husband John McVie.
Out of the gate, they produced the multi-million selling albums "Fleetwood Mac" (1975) and "Rumours" (1977) and such pop classics as "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" "Say You Love Me," "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams."
Many of Fleetwood Mac's hits were written by Nicks, who, Tuesday night, was honored with the Icon award from music-rights management group Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for her body of work both with the band and solo, also including the songs "Landslide," "Gypsy," "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back."
To prep for her acceptance speech, Nicks, 66, reviewed her own songbook.
"There's no fluff," she noted. "There's no just-playful, no-big-deal songs."
"It's a very, very heavy thing to look back on what you've done," Nicks continued. "And, then, tomorrow, it all starts again."
There's a solo album on the way, with 17 so-called "trunk" songs -- things Nicks had written and, in some cases, performed over the years that fans requested be properly recorded and put into an album. A new Fleetwood Mac album is coming, too, as well as a big Mac tour, beginning 30 September in Minneapolis.
Nicks said she warned McVie to expect a very different experience on stage, "'It's very physical. It's almost three hours. You have to kind of be an athlete, so get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! And she's like rockin.'"

WOO HOO! Speculation over, done, finito! STEVIE NICKS IS ON BOARD for the next album!!!!!!! :] With her 24 carat gold songs from Nashville!!! Woop woop!!

I could see a double album but I'm still hoping for it to drop in the fall.
Ah so the new speculation is not if there will be an album, but when.
The 2013 Tour thing seems to be a go-er to me. Except with an additional singer in Christine they should do a least 4-6 new songs live, even if they cannot manage to get a physical CD release out before the tour.
I will wait and watch videos on YouTube like I did last year. Last year was all worth it to see Sad Angel the first night, to see Stevie dedicate Landslide to Peter Green, to see Christine McVie back on stage.
This is fabulous news and Stevie knew exactly what she was doing with promoting this band's record from the very start. She waited just the perfect amount of time to casually drop this into a red carpet conversation at the BMI awards where there were lots of cameras.:p
Beautiful, gorgeous, graceful ageless women: Step up to the stage!!!!!:xoxo:

It wasn't much to you maybe. It was a lot to me at this hard time in my life and that is all that matters, so I'm going to enjoy it and stop rationalising it like a hardcore fan for just a second.
It calls for champagne when you've had the past month that I've had. Just a breath of fresh air in this crazy world where you can have a bad car accident that somehow, miraculously you walked away from. Losing a treasured family member.
It was in a time similar to this time of my life that I first found Fleetwood Mac and it is time like these that there is nothing more special to me than the sound of Stevie, Lindsey and Christine harmonising on the Dreams vocals with the best rhythm section alive today backing them up
I have my ticket to Houston TX show. I need to save the money for airfare. The government in my country recently changed and our economy is good but not certain...
Time to kick back and listen and leave you Ledgies to hammering out the details which I'll hopefully get to read when I'm a little less excited

thanks for sharing. happy for you guys that you are getting your vault songs, although i was hoping they composed and recorded some new music that can be shared with the Mac. maybe Mac will get some more Without Yous to add to Christine and Lindsey's new songs.
above it seems that article writer added the info about the FM tour and album in order to provide the full picture of info that's out there, she's not quoted as saying that... is it in the video/audio that SN actually mentions FM album?

I find this part interesting:

I wonder if Miss Nicks is now planning to take the remaining songs of the 25 that she did not record and make them available for Fleetwood Mac?
Rather exciting time! :)

I read nothing about a FM album coming from the horses mouth. Only the author, which could have just said they're making an album due to Lindsey and Christine's interviews.

Read the article carefully, that "24 carat" quote is when she's talking about the solo album.

Definitely exciting!
I love that she talks about youtube and doesn't bother anymore to add all the "the internet is ruining society" blah blah anymore. She ain't dumb.
That said, you have to wonder of course which songs she thinks everyone wants to hear-- and are they the songs *I* want to hear??:D And then, either way, how will whatever new arrangements she has for them change from the demos we know and love, and how will they sound with her voice now versus decades ago when the demos were done? I'm not complaining, just wondering in anticipation. Someone in her camp has been doing their online homework… fingers crossed!
My demo choices (in a perfect world done perfectly):
Forest of the Black Roses
She Still Loves Him
Have a Heart
Birds of Rhiannon
Joan of Arc (wish FM would have done)
I could skip many of her 80s over-synthed demo songs.

I like your list and agree with the 80's synth songs but you never know, they could be revamped into something we wouldn't recognize.
Guess we will just have to wait and see.
I wonder what her release schedule is for this project.
I think it is time I dig up some of my old bootleg box sets from the mid to late 90's of Miss Nicks and have a listen to refresh the old memory. :)

Did she? It doesn't quote her on that. The author could have gotten that information from another source. After all, Lindsey and Christine's interviews are easily available online.

I agree. I don't see that in quotations marks. She has not confirmed. The author acted as if Stevie said it. But Stevie didn't say it.

Well, so many songs are being chosen that everyone will find that at least 2 or 3 of their favorites have been included.

In all these years, Stevie has never once not offered newly-penned songs to Fleetwood Mac, right alongside any vaulted songs she gives them. I doubt this time around will be any different. In fact, considering that she's going to be releasing 18 of those vaulted songs on her solo album, it seems even more likely that she'll offer completely new material to the Mac.

I would definitely agree with this - considering any brand new material and songs she's done would have more exposure on a new Fleetwood record than it might on one of her solo records (at this point in her career). A part of that has to do with Christine's return - so there will be a lot more attention paid to this new FM album.

FM's getting the left over demo's that didn't make the cut for the solo record :laugh::nod::laugh: that way she doesn't have to spend a lot of her time on FM plus she won't have to worry about what FM does to them...

Mystified is a great song as is Isn't It Midnight.
I agree. simply gorgeous. The harmonies are some of their best. Lindsey's solo is one of the most melodic he's ever recorded. I just got back from Maui and the vibe is very islandy.
In all these years, Stevie has never once not offered newly-penned songs to Fleetwood Mac, right alongside any vaulted songs she gives them.
well, think about the most recent history - EP? she just offered one vaulted song there and that was it. she could have easily offered another song and then EP would have been a nice equilibrium of 2 songs from each songwriter and all these poor people wouldn't have to bi*ch and complain there's not enough Stevie songs on the EP.
a complaint that, from how things seem to be progressing, we'll probably see again with this upcoming FM album.

[This is from the original Billboard article, but it has a few quotes, we didn't have before]
Macomb Daily by Gary Graff, October 21, 2014

Christine McVie's return un-breaks the chain for Fleetwood Mac
When Christine McVie left Fleetwood Mac in 1998, Lindsey Buckingham, for one, didn’t think he’d ever see her standing across the stage to his right ever again.
“For years I was telling everybody else, ‘Y’know, she’ll never be in the band again. She’s gone. She’s GONE!’” Buckingham, 65, recalls with a laugh. “I really believed that, that she’d burned all her bridges and sold her house and her (song) publishing and just needed to get out of L.A., needed to move on from that scene, y’know?
“I didn’t think she’d ever change her mind.”
Today’s lesson, children: Never say never. McVie — who joined Fleetwood Mac in 1968 and was responsible for hits such as “Say You Love Me, “Over My Head,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “Don’t Stop” and “Hold Me” — has, in fact, un-broken “The Chain” and returned to the band after joining it on stage last fall in England. And besides being on tour with the Mac once again, McVie took part in songwriting and recording during the summer in Los Angeles — a full-scale reinvestiture that generated plenty of excitement in, around and about the long-lived band.
"I just saw myself as a retired lady of leisure with the rural manor in England and the Range Rover and the dogs,” says McVie, 71, who spent four years restoring that 17th century house, but also released a solo album, 2004’s “In the Meantime.”
“Eventually I just realized that I made a huge mistake. It took me about 10 years to realize it, that’s all. I started missing (the band) and playing with them and the interaction, the chemistry of it all. I just started to really, really desire to start doing something again, and the only people I could think of that have any desire to do anything with would be them, Fleetwood Mac. They’re my musical family.”
Also influencing McVie’s decision in 1998 was a debilitating fear of flying. She sought therapy to overcome it, and drummer Mick Fleetwood offered an invitation in 2013 for her to visit him in Hawaii, where he resides. The timing worked out so Fleetwood would be in England just before, so McVie was able to fly with her old friend as a companion.
During the visit she played with Fleetwood and ex-husband bassist John McVie, in an ad hoc blues band they maintain, and made a side trip to Los Angeles for a Fleetwood Mac reunion dinner with all five members, including singer Stevie Nicks.
“That was great fun,” recalls Buckingham. “It was very interesting to see what that extra piece of the puzzle does to the overall equation. It was a trip because she was the same old person I’d always known, and she was cracking me up.” And when McVie joined the band for encores of “Don’t Stop” in London during it all, it seemed fait accompli that her time in self-imposed exile was over.
“I think it was me that might have made overtures to Mick, ‘What do you think are the chances? What about if I really would like to come back? Is it possible?’” McVie says. “And Mick was just nonplused, really, because he never thought I’d get on a plane again.
“And then, of course, one thing led to another. We had a few big, long talks transatlantic. It was like the prodigal daughter, really. They all welcomed me with open arms. It’s all happened in a really sort of natural, organic matter.”
The recording sessions in Los Angeles yielded several songs — “Carnival Begin,” “Red Sun” and “Too Far Gone.”
“There’s a whole variety, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs,” says McVie, noting she and Buckingham collaborated on the tunes even more than they had in the past. Nicks missed the sessions while preparing her new solo album, “24 Karat Gold — Songs From the Vaults,” but the group plans to return to the studio to finish and release its first new recordings since 1987’s “Tango in the Night.”
“Knowing me, I’m going to be pushing for a double album,” Buckingham says with a laugh. “But we’ll have to see how much clamor there is, what kind of interest there is. That may inform our decisions one way or the other.
“We’re just very excited, and I’m happy this is happening. The whole thing has just got such a circular feel to it. If you’re talking about one more act for this play that is Fleetwood Mac, or whatever you want to call it, I can’t think of a better way to do it.”
