View Full Version : should FM release the album without SN's songs?

we found out some news yesterday, that seem to push FM album yet another year or 2... or 3... or 5.... how many years has it been thus far for this album?? since 2009 i guess.

so my question is:

since they have 4 out of 5 members on board, and 2 out of 3 songwriters, should they release the album without any SN-penned songs?

another thing to think of - FM has:

released the album with SN and CM, without LB on it, and
released the album with LB and SN, without CM songs on it

- so it seems about right to release one with LB and CM songs, without SN's songs, no? full circle!

if SN is on board with an album from all 5 at some later time, they can release another album then. Lindsey's songs he recorded with Mick and John have been waiting since the beginning of 2012. it is now more than 2 years later, and seems that Christine's songs have been added to his. WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR??

I don't know about "there's no time to waste", but I did vote "yes". I enjoy Chris and Lindsey as collaborators. Stevie always felt like the "bonus member" of that group, and I'm enjoying her recent and fairly prolific solo work so see no reason to insist upon her inclusion. I'd rather not have her just "phone it in" for the sake of it. *cough*TangointheNight*cough*

However, do I think this would happen in a million years? No.

Should FM put out the record without Stevie??? YES!!! Lets' see how good a record without Stevie is and how well it sells...

agree with all you wrote - all very good points!

also unfortunately agree that FM seems to be a bunch of wusses who can't make up their mind and make firm decisions on anything, and that they'll continue to wait and wait and wait for SN and beg her to phone in it. which is a shame, and completely unnecessary.

Debbie, I am surprised you voted yes.

My take on it is that she doesn't want to record with FM anymore (and that probably means Lindsey). She keeps putting it off and now she's in Nashville recording solo tracks. I don't understand why she won't just give them a few demos and let them work on it. Lindsey keeps saying he needs her to bring something to the table and she hasn't so far. Instead she's working on a new solo album. I feel like she doesn't want to be there. And as Elle pointed out they released music without Lindsey and without Chris so why not without Stevie? It'll be something totally different and the Stevie fans will get new music from her anyway (assuming she hasn't opened the vault for the millionth time).

I voted to wait for Stevie.

I don't think this news has pushed Fleetwood Mac's album back at all. Christine told more than one journalist that the band was working on material to release "sometime next year"/"sometime after the tour."

Who knows... maybe Stevie's current recording sessions in Nashville had been planned all along, and were the reason Lindsey said she hadn't yet decided on the "how" & "when" of recording with Fleetwood Mac.

Also ~ if she doesn't want to be there and she phones it in what's the use?? If she's unhappy being in the studio we'll get a bunch of crappy songs. Who wants that? I certainly don't.

When she recorded 'Trouble In Shangri-La,' she pulled "Thrown Down" because she thought it would make a great Fleetwood Mac song. She also saved "Not Make Believe" for them, from her 'TISL' demo sessions.

There's always the possibility she intends to do that again, and save a few songs from these sessions for Fleetwood Mac to record. Lindsey suggested more than once last year, that Stevie didn't yet have any new material to bring to the table. So this time spent in Nashville could easily be a "kill two birds with one stone" situation.

Just a thought.

yes my speculation is that Chris and Lindsey have been saying all this stuff lately since they were waiting for SN and were unsure when she'll be on board. that doesn't mean she'll be on board ever for an FM album, but they seem hopeful. Mick's "we're hoping" it will be fast, 2 weeks, tells me they are still waiting for her. and i just don't get that mentality. why wait and beg and try to coerce her for 5 years now, if she doesn't feel like it? let her do what she wants to do, and they can do what they want to, you know?

plus, i just don't get why you think FM should wait? don't you want more stuff out rather than less?

Unfortunately, if they do release an album without Stevie, they really lose all of the "WE'RE ALL BACK TOGETHER AGAIN YAY" media hype that's been built up around them over the past few months. Commercially it's not a smart move at all. Personally I couldn't care less about commercial success for Fleetwood Mac at this point, but history has shown that they obviously do.

i was thinking that too, and that would be great.

however she can add those songs to the next FM album, one they can record next year. instead of waiting for this one to add it to, that same next year because they won't have time to do it this year with the tour already booked and imminent for the whole second part of the year.

why not have 2 albums instead of just 1 in the same time?? (actually 3: FM without SN, SN solo, and FM with all 5, in the next 2 years! wouldn't that be amazing??) :blob2:

My position is this...If Stevie is done recording with FM (and it's her choice) then FM needs to accept that and move on and quit wasting their time trying to "Get Stevie on board" and if they still want to put out new music with just the 4 that's fine...What ever happens just remember that they have all been recording in one way or another and we will soon have new music...

albums don't sell anyway so why would that matter?

old acts release albums for their soul, and tour for the money and media hype. just looks at how many cobbled together old acts in their 60s are touring and raking in money for the last 2 years!! Rumours 5 are legendary and new kids will want to go see them for their legendary hits of the 5, not for the new material. although it's true that hipster kids will care whether they are still relevant and putting out new material.

I take your point, but I honestly think this whole planned studio release is motivated by a sense of "well... the fans REALLY want it", which would be lost if Stevie was missing. The "for their soul" argument sounds good on paper, but has this band honestly found working as a fivesome at all artistically gratifying or even enjoyable since 1977? Maybe very ocassionally, but for the most part I think these members wouldn't find it worth the hassle except for the fans. This move seems to be more about rewarding fan response (be it monetary or something more abstract) than anything else.

It's not going to sell anyway. That's the point. Whatever fear they had 20 years ago about their lack of popularity without Stevie is a moot point now. They have to give up that fantasy of going gold or platinum, even with Stevie.

They shouldn't be trying for record sales. Will the record get critical attention? Yes and maybe more so when the press plays the band dissension angle. They might study the album more closely to grade it in light of Stevie's absence. This could bring them more criticism as critic after critic talks about what is missing without her (as they did with SYW) or it could bring them surprise praise. We don't know.

But this is not 1987 when they needed Stevie for record sales. Sadly, they won't be getting those with or without her.

At this point I think the "for their soul" albums are the solo albums. FM is always an attempt to be commercial / more successful, despite whatever guise it's labeled under, and despite the fact that they're simply not going to be in this day and age.

And if FM were to do a "for their soul," album, then in my mind that would certainly be the point when they wanted it to be all 5 of them.

Otherwise they'd all just guest on each other's solo projects, as they have in the past.

But they get to exploit that same "we're all back together" hype for the On With the Show tour, so I think they will get their mileage out of that and it will be at the box office, which is more lucrative for them than album sales are anyway.

If Stevie were not touring with them, they'd have a real problem. Her presence on the album is not a problem. It could be if they are still trying to connect with a record label like Warner Bros. though. But they shouldn't be doing that. They need to change their mentality and grow (age) with the times.

exactly! while as 4, Lindsey and Christine obviously enjoy working together as songwriters. so why not release what they can put together instead of trying to force what has not been working for decades?

they don't do any of it for the fans, let's not fool ourselves. :D

I'm not trying to paint any of them as selfless anti-capitalist saints, or anything. Don't get me wrong! ;) But I do think that, money aside, even having a bunch of fans gushing and going "OMG YOU GUYS ARE SO AMAZING ALL TOGETHER I AM SO HAPPY I COULD WRESTLE A RAINBOW" feels awesome and can be a really strong motivator to do something a certain way. Solo projects and a more fragmented incarnation of FM just don't give any of the members that kind of reward on the same scale. And I do think that sort of fanbase "high" is the main reason they want to do this as a fivesome. If it was just for artistic gratification then Lindsey and Christine would already be doing what we suggest. That's not what these guys have on the brain.

I get what you're saying -- but we don't even know that they're still having to beg or coerce her, or that she doesn't want to record with them. Sure, that was true of the very recent past -- but the past is still the past. Stevie's changed her mind before. When she left the band in 1991, she said she didn't foresee herself ever working with Fleetwood Mac again. Ultimately she did, saying that she "woke up one morning and realized I wasn't mad at anyone anymore." Things change.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, the prospect of recording an album last year, meant that it would be just her, Lindsey, Mick & John. Christine's return is a total game-changer.

So Stevie not wanting to record an album last year, doesn't automatically mean that she doesn't want to now. Neither does the fact that she hadn't yet committed to a "how" or "when."

I said weeks ago, that Stevie may have been waiting for Dave Stewart to be available, before she could commit to a time-frame with Fleetwood Mac (if Dave was to be the one producing her tracks). With this latest information, it's very possible that a new solo album had been on the cards for a while now -- and that it's the reason she couldn't definitively tell Fleetwood Mac, "I'll be available from this date to this date," because she didn't yet know.

Maybe Mick is "hoping" that she'll actually be done in two weeks, because they intend to go into the studio with her the minute she's back in LA.

plus, i just don't get why you think FM should wait? don't you want more stuff out rather than less?

Well, for one thing, I highly doubt they have anything to release yet. Was a month & a half at the Village Recorders (if they were even there that long) enough time for Christine to record keyboards and vocals for Lindsey's five remaining Froom tracks, and for the band to completely record five or six of Christine's songs (some that, by her own admission, were in such raw demo form that Lindsey had to fashion them together)?

Seems like a tall order.

On top of that, they were working with limited involvement from John, due to his health issues. I would hope they'd be mindful to not over-tax him physically just to rush out a new album.

i need this Mac album to come out. we've been waiting since 2012.

(and i need LB solo album. ASAP. )

Us "old dogs" waited ten years between 'Tango' and 'The Dance,' for this lineup to work together again. And another sixteen years after that. (We also waited fourteen years between Lindsey's solo albums, and ten years between Stevie's.)

I find the prospect of waiting one more year to be a cake-walk after all that.

I do understand how you feel, though, Elle. And I can't say that I was always this patient waiting for the band members to release material.

I think the twitter verification had to do with the Jimmy Fallon guest appearance. She had 1,000,000 youtube views the next day on that video. She's never grossed so quickly on the internet before that. I bet either Stevie's people or the Twitter people were dragging their feet until they saw that huge increase of interest.

She's either going to cut ties with FM after this tour to complete/promote this album or it's going to get brushed under the rug for a while.

plus, just think of the press for this?! the articles are basically writing themselves!!

FM is a band that has been thriving on highlighting the conflict between various band members, whether made up or real. this should generate tons of press and speculations!!

lets see, i'm not good at this but how about:

lovefest on stage but fallout in the studio!
inside FM reunion: what is really going on?
Christine came back, but Stevie still just cannot stand to put up with LB in the studio (just watch that "you wouldn't say that to Bob Dylan" clip to see what we mean!), and had to sit the album out!
watch their dynamic on stage where we can see all 5 and compare that to what is coming out on the album!?!
will this band ever find some peace and common language?

another thing to think of:

Stevie was a part of EP
Stevie has 9 songs on SYW

yet, most SN fans seem to really dislike both of these. so what makes people think that just because she contributed to the album, her fans will be behind it in droves??

I responded NO. But, not to the " however long it takes part". Because we don't know that Stevie was given a time frame, or a specific date that she needed to comply by. If in fact she was given this information, and then proceeded to keep the band waiting for " however long it takes ", I would probably have a different answer. But we don't know that to be the case. Has Stevie even said she was going to record on this album yet?

no she hasn't. everyone else in the band (other than John) said they are working on the new FM album. but Stevie hasn't and she said she didn't know what she was doing before August of 2014.

I have mixed feelings on this.I think they should throw in the towel in if Stevie does not want to record with the band and put up with the BS in the studio .It will flop.I can not blame her for putting up with the stress doing it.

I'm not worried about a new album nor dont want retreads of greatest hits albums.

I'm just so happy that Chris will tour again with them later this year.
Thats the highlight of year so far to see Chris back in the band.

It is strange to see Chris with Stevie in Nashville and who knows really whats going on there but it would be nice to see some thing with the whole band on record with Chris here.

I always say why bother releasing a album these days.It never see the top 40 Us fan are the only ones are going to buy it.It probably wont or get little radio airplay.

We will feel honored if they do a album just for the fans.

My answer " NO " was in response to the poll question, which was, should FM release the album without Stevie's songs? She is a member of the band, and until she says she no longer wants to record with them, that will be my answer. I answered that way because we don't know what her commitment to recording is at this point. If she said, " You know what guy's, I'll pass ", then by all means record and release. If she is undecided because of other obligations, projects, waiting for the availibility of musicians, studio time , then I feel that they should wait a mutually agreed amount of time.

I hate to bring this up, and I am kind of prepped for the backlash but... I think everyone's so focused on Stevie NOT being in the studio with FM that they automatically assume that the rest of the gang is, seriously working on an album.

This is nearly a month old, but looks like Lindsey may not have even been there in the beginning of April (assuming he was with his family). Again, just a guess.

But I think everyone's quick to jump the gun and think that Stevie's quitting, FM is going to release an album in he near future, etc. I'm just going to sit back and watch this confusing scenario unfold. Who knows with this band, right? Their dynamic has never been uncomplicated - why start now?

The boys have been trying to "get Stevie on board" with recording for 5 years now with no luck...Mick wanted to get the band together in early (Feb) of 2010 and see if they wanted to work on an album or tour and Stevie said NO and then started working on "IYD"...The boys started recording without her hoping she would like what they were doing an get on board with them...Stevie declined to participate (except for "Without You" which didn't turn out very well)...Christine has returned and time has been purchased at the Village and as far as we know Stevie was never there...If Stevie is in fact dead set against recording with FM again what will it take for them to realize it...

not saying "i'll pass" but not saying "i'm in" either while insisting "i will never break up this band" and at the same time going "but band should wait till she cleared up her schedule" is not fair towards the rest of the band. you can't say to your employer they should wait till you are done with your hobby. either the band is first, or solo career is first. either is fine, but you can't be sitting on both chairs at the same time.

I hate to bring this up, and I am kind of prepped for the backlash but... I think everyone's so focused on Stevie NOT being in the studio with FM that they automatically assume that the rest of the gang is, seriously working on an album.

i don't think they are recording in the studio right now, but i might be wrong. i think HelloMonster may have some other quotes from the group q&a that Mick did yesterday, talking about FM in the studio.

when my kids have spring break, i may need to take a week off from work. maybe it's the same when bands are recording for extended periods of time, some people take certain days off?

They should wait. But I don't believe in ANY quality anymore now it's heading this way.

Christines songs cannot be ready yet, they just started a week or two max. In march. Maybe Lindsey is working alone on them now.

I think it is weird. Mick even said : she is doing it quick we hope.
I'm not going to say more about her behaviour. Before I'm called hostile again.

But still, in 2014, with this line-up, there has to be some steviesongs before we can call it a FM album. Especially since Chris is back.

Hmmm, maybe I should have voted for the third option.

Hard to say what it will take, since they are pretty dumb and the more of them that are involved, the dumber they get. Like, if I had hoped that Christine's return might be the tipping point which would make them a little shrewder about these sort of things, I now see that it made them collectively more stupid.

i expected that vote from you, you've been consistent in wanting the chemistry of the 5, from the ground up.

by my math, considering it's the end of april, march and april would be more like a month or 2. if Stevie can record the full album in 2 weeks from scratch, why would you think FM can't finish 4-6 Christine's songs they had demos for beforehand in 2 months?

I think it's time to a new release, with or without the SN work. I really want to hear songs from everyon!!!
We know that Stevie always had a little piece on the albums; 2 songs in FM and Rumours, 3 songs in Mirage and Tango...
Even when it's time to see more SN songs on an album, and even when both with Lindsey released new works recently (2011), we can't compare. Lindsey will have more songs. So I think it's ok, if the new album must be released now.

Hehe, yes, I knew it! Sorry if I didn't say it before, but I was talking about Stevie as a singer, not as a writer. Of course that I want her songs too, and of course she can write songs that then she sings with Lindsey, but if the album must be released soon, and Lindsey know it, they could make it without her songs.
Anyway, as I said before, I want her musical pieces too!! It only depends on them.

She's been juggling her solo albums with FM albums since 1980.
I think it'll all work out and you'll see 3 Nicks songs on the new album.

And as much as I love when Christine and Lindsey collaborate,
I don't think we'll see a Fleetwood Mac album with them and not with Stevie.
Sounds really interesting, but I don't see it happening.

Matt Lucas

When she recorded 'Trouble In Shangri-La,' she pulled "Thrown Down" because she thought it would make a great Fleetwood Mac song. She also saved "Not Make Believe" for them, from her 'TISL' demo sessions.

There's always the possibility she intends to do that again, and save a few songs from these sessions for Fleetwood Mac to record. Lindsey suggested more than once last year, that Stevie didn't yet have any new material to bring to the table. So this time spent in Nashville could easily be a "kill two birds with one stone" situation.

Just a thought.

That's a very good point.

And thanks for sharing that story. I'd never heard that she held onto "Thrown Down" for FM. Wonder if, based on DESTINY RULES documentary, she regrets that? *wink*

Well, I'm glad she saved it for the band, because---in spite of the fact that she's my least favorite of the band's singers---"Thrown Down" is possibly my favorite song off SAY YOU WILL. In spite of the changing tense...

Oh, and I'd be perfectly happy to have a Christine-Lindsey-John-Mick FM record. To be clear, I'd prefer the whole band, but they're not getting any younger, and the timing of these new SN supposedly solo sessions is questionable. I say don't wait. Make the record without her.

But it won't happen.

see, what keeps popping to my mind since i heard the news (and i just posted some similar thoughts in SN forum, i'm sure there will be a mob of angry chiffs making sure i never try to go into the forum again ) is this:

yes, SN has been juggling her solo albums with FM. but who's been getting the shorter end of the stick?

let's consider this imaginary (or is it? ;) ) scenario - the Dance in 1997. LB has GOS1 almost completed and was told by Cavallo and/or WB to get together with FM and roll some of that material into FM album. so they get out the Dance. was it supposed to be shortly followed by a full FM studio album? it surely didn't happen. meanwhile SN released GH album as well as studio album while FM was still on hold all those years. so LB again decided not to wait and release GOS1 as solo. WB again pulled him back and said release it as FM. so finally.... finally, SYW comes out 6 years after the dance and initial discussions! wow! snail pace. official version says that the only time they waited for SN was in 2001-2002 when the boys were in the studio but she was promoting her solo album. but why weren't they all together in the studio between 1998 and 2001? why did she release a solo studio album during that time? doesn't she always say her best stuff and first pick always goes to FM? so i guess she considers all he TISL stuff crap and her songs on SYW to be much superior? just wondering...

ok, so it took 6 years since the first talk of the reunited FM studio album to the actual release of SYW.

now let's fast forward to 2009. FM is on tour. LB is consistently saying during the tour speeches that FM is considering going into studio right after the tour. he gets slammed by fans in 2010 when FM does not go into the studio. why did they not go? SN decided to record a solo album? wait what? isn't her band (FM) her first priority? doesn't she always say that? well not in 2010. fast forward to 2012. FM boys again try to record a solo album. SN again nixes it, but begrudgingly contributes the 30+ yo BN song for a mini-release at the start of the next tour. says she's doing FM a favor by holding on to every-3year schedule for tours. apparently she tours solo constantly because she doesn't care about favors to her solo career, FM comes first.

so...... FM should tour every 3 years. what happened? it's 2014! and they are touring? didn't they just tour in 2013??

and wait it's 2014, it's now been 5 years since the first talk of the FM studio album. SN is working on her 2nd studio album since 2009. i guess IYD songs and these new ones are all crap and not worth even offering to FM as the first pick - considering FM will always, always get a first pick of her best songs, right?

let's add up:

it has been 6 years (1997-2003) since the first talk of the FM studio album till the release.
it is only 2014 now. considering it has been only since 2009 that we heard the first talk of a new FM studio album, we need to wait at least another year, so that it's again 6 years from the first talk to the release. so 2015 in the best case scenario.

soooooo, that's how it works. FM is very very slow. and that is because they don't know how to work fast and LB is a perfectionist. or maybe it's because they have to wait for somebody and their solo career which comes first? who knows. or maybe that's the cycles thing LB always talks about: 3 year gaps from tour to tour, 6-year gaps from the first talk of the FM album till the album has even a fighting chance to come out.

now remember, all this is just imaginary. just bsing here. no truth in any of this whatsoever.

From what I've read, this new SN project is an unusual one -- in that it's being recorded really fast. I don't see why recording some tracks with Dave Stewart for a few weeks will affect the outcome or release of the next Fleetwood Mac album in any way.

If anything, I think it's great that she's spending some time with Dave Stewart now before the FM album is finished. It will certainly bring a happier and perhaps more creative Stevie Nicks into the Fleetwood Mac project.

And I also like the idea of the rest of the band (the musicians) spending time without her.
In some respects, I saw a Fleetwood Mac on the road last year play like they never have before.
This band is in a great place musically and it doesn't make sense for any time constraints to be put on anyone, or any recording process.
The beauty of not being beholden to a record company….

yeah, except i don't know that the band is as happy with their freedom to wait as you seem to be implying. Mick's "we're hoping" doesn't sound like he exactly likes the situation.

and yes the beauty of not being beholden to a record company usually comes from being able to release stuff when you want to, but that in many cases seems to be faster than waiting for the record company to put you on their schedule. not slower.

their only time constrains these days are their ages and mortality. they wasted tons of time over the last 40 years, for one reason or another... seems weird that they'd want to waste more.

seems that some members of the band can just come and go... while others are not allowed to. if people talking about coming and going would grow a brain and maybe also a spine, that would be awesome. imo.

wish some others would have been as honest in their voting, instead of clogging option #2, when in fact they may really not care about getting any new FM album ever again.

although i guess that's how you can read the option #2 - wait for SN, because with some luck that can mean you may never get new FM album. :p

I don't know.

I think it's easy to forget these are 5 people with lives - lives both in and out of FM.
They don't have anything to prove to anyone anymore, so I'm not sure any of them feel the same pressure a lot of fans are feeling. The fact that they committed to two big back to back tours, is huge and enough for me. The album will come when it's meant to be.
I just hope they keep playing and I hope they keep enjoying it. When that stops, they'll know.
In a perfect world, I would have rather had an album first, but it seems like the tour had to happen as soon as possible. Lightning strikes - maybe once, maybe twice.

i think the tour was scheduled the way it was to squeeze just enough of a break in between 2 tours to finish the album and have it in the can before the tour.

the boys were thinking they were smart. it backfired.

so they should go ahead with their initial plan anyway, finish and get the album out.
or if that was not their plan, at least it was my plan! ;)

the way i see it, it's none of our concern to care about their personal lives. plus tours are money grabs, let's not fool ourselves. and it's our money they are grabbing. tons of it for just one ticket, too.

I think if FM pursued this, I think Stevie would leave the group. She is set for life, does not need the $ from the band, and can tour on her own and with others without FM. Maybe FM could work things out now that Christine is back but commercially, it would be a huge loss for them (IMHO). My take on it is that she doesn't want to record with FM anymore (and that probably means Lindsey).

SN may or may not be creative solo, i have no idea about that, but regarding FM, she's just stalling them.

FM with Christine and Lindsey as songwriters might have several more albums out in the fast succession. so if it's new music you want from them, that might be the ideal solution.

I was thinking about that the other day and why he never got credit for that. Look at Dreams for instance. When she gave it to the band even Christine was like:"What the heck is this? Not for sales, not for avoiding pain, not for selfesteem, just for the love of chemistry that you once had with the five of you.

I was thinking about that the other day and why he never got credit for that. Look at Dreams for instance. When she gave it to the band even Christine was like:"What the heck is this? It only has 3 chords". Lindsey worked his magic and it became their only no. 1 in the US but he never got any credit whatsoever.

That's just the way it goes. "Songwriting" by definition refers to be lyrics and the melody as it relates to the underlying chord progression. Stevie wrote that herself. The particular arrangement is just that - an arrangement. Some writers who work collaboratively on instrumentation/arrangement with other band members choose to give the other members writing credit on behalf of their contribution (iirc, this is why Lindsey is listed as a co-writer of Frozen Love) but it's not a requirement or even the norm. Lindsey (as a member of Fleetwood Mac) got credit for the production of all of the songs on Rumours, did he not?

The band is listed as co-producer, but not a Lindsey himself. I don't know how accurate that is or if he gets enough credit that way. I'm guessing he had more to do with the production than the others, but maybe other people here know more about that. I know on Tusk they gave him "special thanks."

There was new product either FM or solo out almost every year from 1975 through 1987...Can we go back to that...

And as far as solo goes... Stevie's guest appearances were always nice surprises in between FM and other solo recordings (i.e, Whenever I Call You Friend, Gold, Midnight Wind, the Insider, Needles and Pins, etc.)

Yes, That's what I simply don't understand. Your whole band wants to crawl for you to please you as you wish, and still you can't conquer the possible tension that COULD lead to something electrifying.

Not for sales, not for avoiding pain, not for selfesteem, just for the love of chemistry that you once had with the five of you.

Last time was 86-87 and you were in deep shyt, and not there. Now you all are coming of age and are willing to respect eachothers feelings more than ever. Do it one more time, WHY the friggin' hell NOT?

interesting posts, and i think you all are onto something.

for all we know, and judging by the Tusk doc, Lindsey did much more than just arranging and producing on many of the songs. remember "if we keep your melody on there"? and actually WMYTYTO, TL lyrics project a lot of that frustration. yet he never received or asked for the songwriting credit and unlike with the producing where he gripes about it (and then people slam him when he's asking for producing credit , of course! - isn't he a whiny diva, right?). he never says what exactly he did on many of Stevie's songs in the past. neither does Stevie, i don't think.

but i think self-esteem that you mentioned in passing Gerald has a lot to do with it. that's the reason Stevie doesn't want to go back to the band and work with Lindsey in particular anymore. he offered he can give her some melodies, remember? she feels she found other people she can work with when she's out of inspiration for chords and melodies (and doesn't mind giving them the credit for work they do, there's no historical baggage and co-dependency there for her). she doesn't want to go back to being dependent on LB. we won't see any SN/LB so-writes but seems very likely we'll see plenty more of SN/DS ones.

she's happier solo, even i can see that! so why not let her do what she wants to, why would you want her to go back to recording with Mac that she so obviously doesn't want to do?

why would you want FM to wait till she's done with solo and coax her into finishing their album?

Stevie. She was just a pretty face with a couple of good lines that other people turned into listenable songs. She is still a pretty face...

Is there any room in your statement for Stevie having the most distinct voice in rock and roll? Nobody sounds like her. Her songs may have had help in their creations but in the end it is her name on them and most of them are such timeless classics that I have thanked God for a million and one times. Stevie Nicks has enhanced my life and the life of millions.

I will always love Lindsey and Christine too.

Based on your screen name it is obvious you are an LB fan but I find it sad that you find the need to cut down Stevie while trying to place Lindsey on a pedestal.

regardless of whether or not she deserves the sole credit for them, as was discussed in several threads for the last few days.

I don't think it's much of a mystery. Some people prefer FM as a group over any of their solo endeavors. Naturally those people would be most interested in hearing a full Mac album, above a new solo album or a partial FM effort.

Actually, they've both talked about it quite a bit. Stevie would write lyrics and a melody and a chord progression and record a demo of it accompanying herself either on piano or before she taught herself piano, guitar. Then she'd hand it over to Lindsey and he would figure out what parts to add to it, possibly some structural things, basically flesh it out instrumentally, or even suggest a tweak hear and there etc. But fleshing something out structurally/instrumentally is not the same thing as writing a song. It's arranging. I could take a song of Stevie's and completely change everything but the lyrics and melody and that doesn't mean I now can claim to have written my version of her song. I just made a new arrangement of it.

Well what one would prefer is one thing. Ideally most of us would prefer an album with all 5. But as a fan of the band above solo careers, many of us would would be fine not waiting on Stevie because who knows when that'll be. They've been waiting on her for years. An album of Lindsey and Christine songs would be very enjoyable and I'd rather have that album soon then to wait on a hypothetical album with Stevie that may be a long time coming or may not happen.

I prefer FM as a group, but I'd prefer an album with the four of them rather than have them wait for Stevie, when she doesn't want to be there. I don't see anything good coming out of that collaboration. Just a lot of bitterness and blame. And it's because I like the group better than any of the solo artists that Stevie's loss just doesn't seem that insurmountable to me. It would when they were selling records, but not any more. Two songwriters is not the best option, but I'm happy with 2nd best.

It's like after The Dance. They said that a lot of reason for the delay is that they were waiting for Christine to change her mind. I missed Christine and wanted her back and I've been hoping (and actually predicting) that she would change her mind all along. But I didn't want the other 4 to do nothing in all of that time. I think waiting until 2003 for her to change her mind was too long. Of course, I also think not letting her just record and not tour was the wrong choice and that could have ended the gridlock, if they'd just not insisted on her touring.

But today, it seems like we have the reverse situation where Stevie wants to tour and not record and I say that's fine. Really, if she was happy it would be different. But she hasn't seemed particularly happy with FM to me since the tour ended. She didn't want to do the EP really. I was sure having Christine back would change her mind about being in the studio. I was wrong. It seems like her involvement in recording would be under duress and I think that is just going to turn out badly, from the inception. It's like John said of Christine back then, if she was going to be there, but sad like she was during The Dance, then it was good she was gone.

Same thing, if Stevie is going to record, but only grudgingly, then she should not be in the studio with them, but the result is going to be bad.

Well, I personally agree with you. I just want new music period. But I can certainly understand where others might want all 5 or nothing. If Stevie is in fact wanting to record with them and it's just a timing issue, then I'd want them to wait so long as it wasn't going to take 5 years or something. Otherwise I'm down for a Chris/Lindsey penned FM record.

She's talked about it over the years and differently. For SYW she said she came in with pretty fully realized demos.

Well, he doesn't do a whole lot of things with arranging, because my demos are pretty much there. That doesn't mean that they're not 100 percent more terrific after Lindsey works on them. I'm very territorial about the way my songs are arranged. What he does is take the skeleton and then he goes in for hours that we never see him and he plays parts and parts and more parts. He arranges right underneath my little skeleton.

But in the old days before SYW, he did more than that to her songs.

No, no. I would sit down and play him Gold Dust Woman on the guitar, my simple little version, and two days later it would be recorded, and it would be recorded really well. He could take my songs and do what I would do if I had his musical talent. When he wasn't angry with me, that is. That's why there's seven or eight great songs, and there's 50 more where he wasn't happy with me and didn't help me.

That's why I think he shouldn't do anything on her next batch of songs, except maybe sing background, because she and her fans don't need to be complaining about how he ruined or deliberately sabotaged her for the next 10 years.

She once told Rolling Stone,

"I write my songs, but Lindsey puts the magic in, and there's no way, well, I could pay him ten percent. I could walk up to him and thank him. If I were to play you a song the way I wrote it and gave it to them, and then play you the way it is on the album, you would see what Lindsey did."

Today, I don't think she thinks he brings magic to the songs any longer. So, that's the seismic shift. If they've lost the chemistry in the studio, at least they still have it on stage and we're getting all FIVE on a tour. That's good enough for me.

Michele

yes, that's how i feel. if Stevie doesn't want to record, why try coaxing her? if she changes her mind and there are no more roadblocks, they can release a follow-up album. with 8 songs already recorded Lindsey might already have enough for 2 FM albums, and Christine seems to have as many too.

You keep saying that you're gaining respect for her and losing it for the others. Why are you gaining respect for her screwing over her band mates? I don't find it to be admirable. If you think the band should kick her out and you lose respect because they don't, fine. But I don't it's commendable what Stevie is doing. I'm sorry but really, Elle? We're now comparing the situation (of which we don't know much) to an actual crime committed by someone who's a user and can't be trusted? You're talking about her like some Machiavellian villain!

Why are you assuming FM are being 'fooled'? Why are you assuming they need her in the studio for the two weeks she's in Nashville anyway? Why are you assuming a lot of things? It's getting ridiculous, making ethical and moral judgments on Stevie because she happens to be in Nashville right now instead of LA recording with the band. We don't know the actual situation or what they've talked about or what stage they're up to of recording. We know what they let us know and that's IT unless you have some kind of insider knowledge or ability to read Lindsey's mind. Truly, the conclusions being leapt to here, and the assumptions being made by some people are just mind-boggling to me.

At the moment we seem to have these general three ways of thinking or a combination a lot of the time and it drives me mad:

1) WTF!? She’s been whining for yrs about wanting Chris back, she comes back, and Stevie buggers off down to Nashville for a solo project!? Damn her. Hope the rest of FM dump her selfish ass and do a record without her.

2) YAY!!! Lindsey always ruins her songs now anyway so I’m glad she’s back working with Dave - I like when working is a pleasant experience for her and she doesn’t need that darkness. YAY FOR MORE SOLO WORK.

3) I JUST WANT A FLEETWOOD MAC ALBUM WITH ALL FIVE. WHAT DID I DO WRONG TO DESERVE THIS F*CKERY!? :/

No, we don't have an exact precedent for this situation and I think a lot of the frustration comes from thinking this is going to destroy those initial hopes for a really good, united with-all-five-members band effort. I just think that perhaps people should relax a little bit. Wait and see before making judgments that Stevie's morally bankrupt, that she's using the band without a care, etc.

And no, Lindsey will NOT be putting out a Fleetwood Mac album without Stevie. It's just NOT going to happen, no matter how you hard you wish...

The only bitterness coming from this Lindsey fan (Stevie fan as well) is that we're not getting a solo album from him as well!

Honestly, if I had to choose between a new solo albums and tours from both Lindsey and Stevie versus a tour with Christine, I'd choose the albums...

I wonder what Christine thinks. I was reading John's old comments today and he was saying how mellow everything was in 2003. So, Christine was probably thinking, "Oh everyone is so mellow now. It will be a lot different than it was in the old days ..."

None of the poll choices reflect my feelings, so instead of voting I'll just post...

I believe that as long as Stevie is a member of Fleetwood Mac, they should not release an album without her on it. If they want to release an album without her because they feel she is making them wait too long, they should ask her to leave the band first (or to put it more bluntly, fire her) and go back to having a four-member Fleetwood Mac, only with Christine instead of Stevie. Simple as that.

Plus, if they choose to wait, it doesn't mean they have to sit on their thumbs. Lindsey and Christine can work on solo projects if they've got extra time, or do a "Buckingham McVie" album - whatever they want. Just don't call it "Fleetwood Mac" unless it has all the band members on it.

However, I fully expect it all to work out; I fully expect to get a Fleetwood Mac album with all five members in 2015 regardless of whether or not Stevie (or Lindsey for that matter) do solo work on the side. If that turns out not to be the case, THEN I'll get my blood pressure up. Until that point, though, I'm chill. :)

I want an album and I want it BEFORE the next leg of the tour, not after and I don't want to hear that it might come after too, because that "maybe we'll do an album after the tour" NEVER pans out and it will just distress me to hear them say it.

Also, I want a full album and not an EP. And my plan of action is to be angry until I know what I want is going to happen and then if and when it does occur, I will be angry about something else. Or even if I'm not technically angry, I like to complain anyway. So, I'll continue on that course.

I agree they should fire her if an album is being held up because of her. At least both Lindsey and Christine made it very clear they were leaving when they parted with FM. Stevie, on the other hand, appears to want to get the benefit of wanting to be in FM without having to put in the work in the studio. If that's the case, it really says something about her character.

However, I will concede we really don't know what the situation is. If she plans to record and the Nashville project is a quick thing, then I suppose everyone wins.

I've been hard on Stevie, but I will make a few points to clarify my position:

She has every right to do a solo project if that is what she wants to do.
She has every right not to record with FM again if that is how she feels.
If the above is the case, then she needs to clarify her position and leave the band.
A new FM album, with four or five members, will likely not be that great, unless the band gets the right producer. The EP had bland songs with piss-poor production. If that's what we can look forward to, then I'm not interested.
FM has, like it or not, sullied its brand by effectively becoming a nostalgia band. It will never be able to shake that.
Keeping the above in mind, Lindsey is actually hurting his brand. His solo records got him so much cred as an edgy, alternative artist, and now he's ruining it by touring on the strength of mostly tired old songs. I don't think he realizes that.
FM is just about money today. And like any other enterprise that is about money, it can't be truly innovative or interesting.

The mythical Fleetwood Mac album that everyone is hoping for is probably not going to happen...Christine's return won't magically return the band to the '70s or '80's it's 30 years later and they are not the same people that they once were the band isn't in the same place it was and the industry is definitely not what it once was...Everyone has made their expectations for a new FM record so great that it will never live up to them...Rest assured that whatever Stevie ultimately contributes to the new record Dave Stewart will be heavily involved with and I wouldn't be surprised if that includes any contributions she makes to Lindsey's & Christine's songs...

Yes, all true. You get the best bang for the buck with the five members, and yes, it's all about the sales for the band (and any record label). With a legacy band like FM, they want to get at least 500K in sales, otherwise it's waste of their time.

I think there will be another Fleetwood Mac album, and I do think it will include Stevie Nicks. Nobody is the same person they were 20-30 years ago, but they have in fact evolved. All 5 of them are extremely talented people. Stevie's voice has suffered the most, but the way they were able to blend in London last year sounded amazing to my ears.

The chemistry in my opinion is much the same as it always was. Great harmonies, tight musicianship, and great work ethic. I don't think Lindsey and Stevie have ever really gotten along well since 1975-1976. I think they will tour and the album will come out some time during or in the break.

Stevie's album didn't sell well, this one probably won't either. But with the right marketing, an album with all 5 of them can do really well. They did really well selling 95% of three shows in LA, and the rest of the country.

I also get the vibe that LB and CM want to make new music as artists. Mark my words, Stevie's absence (which I believe she'll be there) will not stop them from recording new music.

Frankly, my interest is waning for a new FM record. They've lost momentum, and Christine's return (which could be criticized of bad timing) hasn't seemed to speed anything up, instead, I think it speaks volumes that they have all signed up for another greatest hits tour - "On With The Show" I mean, heck, it could've evolved into something else by now, if Christine, would have come around 5+ years ago (when Stevie offered her 5 million to come back) for the 09' "Unleashed tour"!?! Things probably would've been completely different, if she didn't wait until the 12th hour to return, conveniently, once Stevie & the band continued to help keep FM relevant and inspirational for a new slew of bands (if mostly on the back of keeping the bands back catalog & "Rumours" tension/shipping alive.)

Stevie was especially essential to this resurgence, with her high profile IYD solo appearances, and enthusiastic willingness to bring her brand to a bigger audience & younger generation w/ appearances on key television shows. All along Stevie's solo success & influence saw it's biggest surge ever in Europe since around the mid 2000s, starting with her collaboration with Deep Dish, and continuing with YouTube's ubiquitious arrival, and therfore access to Stevie's vintage footage & catalog (bootlegs/demos) and finally with the release of "In Your Dreams" (with her extensive press tour & concert appearance at Hyde park)

And finally, I know I was not the only one underwhelmed with "Extended Play"! "Sad Angel", "Miss Fantasy" & the other piano one, were alright, but certainly nothing special or interesting. Lindsey & the band seemed to simply be retreading ideas with bad production! Nothing new. If that's what I am to expect with a new FM record. I would rather they not sully their 70s & 80s output. I say let Stevie & Lindsey continue with their respective & artistically more expressive sole careers after this refried "reunion" tour.

I just wanted to say that I want a new album during the tour because I think that will increase publicity for it and I want to hear selections from it in concert.

But I am NOT one of those people who doesn't want to go to a show if they are just playing the same songs. I don't care if they do the same songs, I always find something different in each concert, no matter how identical the setlist is. The live feeling is extraordinary and, I actually, think I feel like a bit of a participant when I know what's coming. It makes me imagine I could be their stage director, when I get so familiar with it.

So, although I do join in the "nostalgia act" criticism, I would never, ever say that I don't want to see them because they only put on the same show. I don't think they ever put on the same show.

I'm not going to travel everywhere, but I will see as many shows as I can afford. I will never not see them, I don't care what they sing.

i don't know whether it's better than nothing... i think only LB/CM penned album could be an amazing combo, especially considering the music he's been creating in the last 10 years. but we'll probably never know.

but i don't have too hard of a time living through the easy-listening music Stewart wrote for IYD and his recent solo albums, unlike many of the SN's grating songs on SYW (think SG, RTTG). so maybe it will work out.

Not unlike Lindsey's grating songs on SYW (Think, WTWCT & "Come"), not to mention his disastrously overwrought SYW version of "Say Goodbye" - sped up and bled out of any beauty from his GOS version.

Oh, no way! Lindsey tinkered with it. It was much more subtle on the GOS album leak (which I have) and Stevie's backing vocals have nothing to do with that. The "live" versions on the tour were beautiful. The album version is not near as lilting as the "live" version or GOS version (the "live" version was the best). Same with "Bleed To Love Her" - The SYW version is not near as good as on "The Dance". Cold, cold cold......

Lindsey didn't do Stevie any favors by arranging RTTG or "Destiny Rules" by beginning cold (acoustically) with no rhythm instruments layered underneath. They sounded metallic and devoid of any warmth.

I think you are WRONG...FM has been pushing recording for years and I think she may also be weary of LB's production of her songs but with Christine's return she has finally said "You want to make an album I'll show you how to make an album" Stevie seems to be hell bent on getting things done and I think she will bring some of her best work ever to FM...I also think she may have a bit of a chip on her shoulder and wants to out do LB & CM...

SG is just as horribly sped up on GOS1 as it is on SYW. there are many more differences from one to the other live version than from GOS1 to SYW version. none of the versions are any good though, at least not to my taste.

BTLH on both GOS1 and on SYW is gorgeous. there is no bad versions of BTLH, and he did tons of them , including bunch of different live versions.

Destiny Rules is a gorgeous song because of that underlying guitar and that ending outro. that's if you can live through the awful vocals somehow. it's my favorite SN song on SYW.
