Did not know where to put this but this is great news for me. Stevie getting a lot of newfound recognition. I feel she is long overdue. Just my opinion.

Great news! I love Barbara Cane's description of Stevie :blob2:

BMI Icons are selected because of their unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. As a BMI Icon, Stevie Nicks will join elite ranks that include Paul Simon, Carole King, David Foster, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, the Jacksons, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, and others.

"Stevie Nicks is an extraordinary songwriter and pedigree artist of stunning genius and unwavering grace, on and off the stage. She has defined an era of pop and rock culture around the world with her brilliance and unforgettable magnificence," said Barbara Cane, BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles.

It is pretty vindicating after all these years to see Stevie finally gaining respect & stature in the industry. She never really received critical respect throughout her career, and was entirely written off by the mid 1990s. Some time in the past ~5 years, she's suddenly gaining icon status in the industry, though. It's a bit of an odd & abrupt change, but I'm digging it all the same. I fully credit the rise of the internet generation & culture. Suddenly, everyone can express their geekiest, nerdiest interests, and find tons of support from their peers who agree. It's been like 1 big coming out fest for Stevie fandom the past several years. I love it, and am so glad she's around to witness it.

 Well said! I remember back in the early to mid 80's my friends making fun of me over being a Stevie fan. Even radio Dj's would crack jokes online about not understanding her lyrics or pronunciation while singing. Today, I hear people praising her career, her songwriting and her live performance. What I like best is the younger generation is really embracing her now. Rock on Stevie!!

I have been listening to a bunch of her older music on something called http://www.last.fm/music/Stevie+Nicks/+videos, some I have never heard before and I am more in love with her voice and her music now than when I was younger. "A Thousand Days," "Some Kind of Woman," and "Two Kinds of Love," which she sings as duet and starts out and seems to be not so good but then I really loved the sound of it. Just thought to mention. The difference in her voice is quite noticeable over the years but in my opinion if you love her voice, you love her voice and singing no matter the transformation. I don't talk or sing like I used to either.

LOS ANGELES, March 31, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI®), the global leader in music rights management, will bestow the BMI Icon Award to Stevie Nicks at its 62nd Annual BMI Pop Awards, slated for Tuesday, May 13, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The invitation-only ceremony will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past year's most-performed pop songs in the United States. The BMI Pop Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year will be named during the ceremony. The evening will also include an all-star musical tribute to Nicks.

The legendary Stevie Nicks has an instantly recognizable voice that rises above all others. It is at once haunting, romantic, filled with mystery and completely unforgettable. Her spectacular talent has brought joy to her millions of fans for generations. With her incomparable songwriting ability, she has received 12 BMI million-performance citations, along with 12 BMI Pop Awards, a BMI Urban Award and a BMI Country Award for such hits as "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Leather and Lace," "Landslide" and "Gypsy," among others. With songs such as "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back," Nicks has earned a top spot among a pedigree of timeless pop rock icons. From the start of her career as a solo artist with the release of her five million-selling debut, Bella Donna, up to her current critically acclaimed album, In Your Dreams, Nicks continues to bedazzle audiences around the world. As a member of the legendary Fleetwood Mac, whose Rumours album was one of the biggest selling records of all time, Nicks' four-decade career includes induction into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, multiple GRAMMY awards and numerous gold and platinum records. Collectively, these achievements add up to one of the most successful female artists in pop rock history.

The 62nd Annual BMI Pop Awards will be hosted by BMI President Del Bryant and BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles, Barbara Cane.

Hopefully the musical tribute for Stevie and her music will be something along the lines of The Kennedy Center Honors as opposed to one of those wretched Grammy tributes...

I think whoever does this tribute should do a medley of her lyrical high points:

A nice " when I see you again, desert angel, cheaper then free into the forgotten chimpanzee" four pack to really drive home her lyrical genius.

When I see you again would be the perfect closer too. The finale if you will. Every one who wants to honor her can just shout out a "wasamattababy" right down the line. Sheryl can start then Courtney love, Natalie maines, all 3 me,bets of lady antebellum And fu** it, anyon member of the audience can just jump on stage for a record setting amounts of wasamattababys in a 5 minute span.

I'm glad she's getting the recognition, and it's well-deserved. I think Stevie herself has been working to ensure her "icon" status and preserve her legacy these past several years. She's just been very visible...the American Idol and Voice appearances, Glee, Sound City, Oprah's LifeClass, popping up to sing duets with Adam Levine, etc. She's made a conscious effort these past few years, and it appears to be paying off.

I really hope they don't do freaking Landslide. This would be a nice opportunity to showcase Stevie's lesser known songs, or the ones she doesn't do live anymore (which are many!)

The chances that Antebellum will attempt Rhiannon are almost 1200%...Hopefully Vanessa Carlton will do a great piano version of "Beauty And The Beast" or "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You"

If "Landslide" must be included then it should be performed by (dodges flying bricks) the Dixie Chicks only because their version garnered Stevie a lot of attention....

This is from her Wikipedia page...The Dixie Chicks covered her 1975 classic "Landslide", which became a Top 10 hit (#1 on the Adult Contemporary chart) and a No.1 Hit on the Country Chart. This cover also earned her a BMI Songwriters Award in 2003 when it won "Song of the Year" (the award is given to the songwriter of the track, regardless of the performer). According to BMI, "Landslide" also earned Nicks the 35th Robert J. Burton Award as "Most Performed Country Song of the Year". This distinction is given to the song tallying the most feature US broadcast performances during the eligibility period. Included on the Dixie Chicks' platinum Monument album Home, "Landslide" was a Country, Adult Top 40, Hot 100 and AC Billboard charts smash

Stevie Nicks BMI ICON awards AP interview http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/US-Stevie-Nicks/611da16279cf74783f28d2ec00c42d8b?query=US+Stevie+Nicks&current=9&orderBy=Relevance&hits=57&referrer=search&search=%2Fsearch%3Fstartd%3D%26endd%3D%26allFilters%3D%26query%3DUS%2BStevie%2BNicks%26advsearchStar tDateFilter%3D%26advsearchEndDateFilter%3D%26searchFilterHdSDFormat%3DAll%26searchFilterDigitized%3D All%26searchFiltercolorFormat%3DAll%26searchFilteraspectratioFormat%3DAll&allFilters&productType=IncludedProducts&page=1&b=c42d8b

Stevie Nicks/Musician, on the reunion of the full superstar configuration of Fleetwood Mac: "Well, Christine (McVie) just decided to come back. She called. We were in Europe last year at the end of the year and she called me and said, 'What would you think if I decided to come back to the band?' And I'm like, 'Well, you've convinced us over 16 years that you were never coming back. You finally, actually convinced us. So, are you kidding?' And she said, 'I'm not kidding.' And I said, 'Well, Chris, have you seen us in concert lately? Because you should see us, because it's very physical. It's almost three hours, and you have to kind of be an athlete. So, get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! So she's, like, rockin.' So she's very excited, and we are very excited for her. "

Steve Nicks/Musician, on reviewing her own compositions: "There's no fluff songs in my songs. And they all meant a lot to me and they were all written about somebody else or about me or about the world or about the country or, you know, there's no just playful no-big-deal songs."

"It's a very, very heavy thing to look back at all the things you've done, especially when that's between 15 years old and 66 years old, and, then, tomorrow, it all starts again with a whole other thing."

Stevie Nicks on the material for her upcoming solo album:

"We went on to YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever, and we picked up all the songs that like -- there was like 25 songs that the fans really wanted me to record, and we picked 18. And we went to Nashville and we recorded 17 songs. So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24-carat gold songs.

Stevie Nicks on acting opposite actress Jessica Lange in "American Horror Story: Coven": "She's amazing. And, so, I just watched her a lot, you know? And I sang, 'Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You' to her, probably like 20 times. And she cried every time. And it was like, 'Oh my god!' It was -- the fact that Ryan (series co-creator and -producer Ryan Murphy) brought me into that was such a gift - nothing like that probably will ever happen to me like that again. 'American Horror Story: Coven'! It's like my dream, you know. (laughs.)"

NICKS GETS ICONIC, TALKS FLEETWOOD MAC REUNION, NEW SOLO ALBUM AND 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY'

Stevie Nicks thought former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie was pulling her leg.

"She called when we were in Europe at the end of last year," explained Nicks. "And (she) said, 'What would you think if I decided to come back to the band?' And I'm like, 'Well, you've convinced us over 16 years that you were never coming back. You finally, actually convinced us. So, are you kidding?'"

She wasn't.

McVie had conquered a longtime fear of flying -- a fear so crippling that, in 1998, it forced her to retire from one of the world's busiest touring bands.

McVie spent most of the time between then and now at her mansion in rural northern England.

With McVie's return, Fleetwood Mac is finally back to its most successful configuration, also including Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and Christin's ex-husband John McVie.

Out of the gate, they produced the multi-million selling albums "Fleetwood Mac" (1975) and "Rumours" (1977) and such pop classics as "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" "Say You Love Me," "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams."

Many of Fleetwood Mac's hits were written by Nicks, who, Tuesday night, was honored with the Icon award from music-rights management group Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for her body of work both with the band and solo, also including the songs "Landslide," "Gypsy," "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back."

To prep for her acceptance speech, Nicks, 66, reviewed her own songbook.

"There's no fluff," she noted. "There's no just-playful, no-big-deal songs."

"It's a very, very heavy thing to look back on what you've done," Nicks continued. "And, then, tomorrow, it all starts again."

There's a solo album on the way, with 17 so-called "trunk" songs -- things Nicks had written and, in some cases, performed over the years that fans requested be properly recorded and put into an album. A new Fleetwood Mac album is coming, too, as well as a big Mac tour, beginning 30 September in Minneapolis.

Nicks said she warned McVie to expect a very different experience on stage, "'It's very physical. It's almost three hours. You have to kind of be an athlete, so get a trainer.' And she did! She did, totally! And she's like rockin.'"

Variety by Andrea Seikaly, May 14, 2014

http://variety.com/2014/scene/awards/stevie-nicks-adam-levine-shakira-sheryl-crow-at-bmi-pop-awards-1201180697/

A star-studded crowd of musicians and scribes flocked to the Beverly Wilshire Tuesday night to celebrate legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks at the 62nd annual BMI Pop Awards.

Adam Levine, Shakira, Sheryl Crow, Lady Antebellum and Vanessa Carlton each took the stage to pay tribute to the Icon Award honoree by performing some of her greatest hits.

Carlton sang “Dreams,” followed by Levine and Crow who teamed up to perform “Leather and Lace.”

Crow also expressed her admiration for Nicks, saying, “There’s not a woman that writes songs that doesn’t want to be you.”

Lady Antebellum played “Rhiannon” and Shakira, who told Nicks, “You’re my hero,” concluded the musical tribute with her rendition of “Landslide.”

Nicks addressed the crowd for nearly 30 minutes and talked about everything from writing her first song and receiving her first guitar to the future of the music industry.

“In the beginning, there was a song,” Nicks began, telling the audience about the process of writing her first songs and discovering her passion for music. After having her heart broken a couple of years later, the Fleetwood Mac singer said she was finally able to write about her own emotional experiences.

“For the first time after all those years of singing other people’s beloved songs, I understood what love was and why people write these songs,” she explained.

Nicks also discussed her decision to pursue a solo career without abandoning or jeopardizing Fleetwood Mac.

“Being in a band with three writers means you only get three or four songs per album, and for somebody who writes as much as me that really just wasn’t enough,” Nicks said.

Though she expressed an interest in music from a very young age, Nicks explained that her mother insisted she pursue her education herself before dedicating her life to music.

“The question was, for my mother, ‘You will get an education because you will probably be a famous rock and roll singer or country singer or an R&B singer – whatever it is that you’re going to be. But you will be educated and you will be able to stand in a room full of incredibly intelligent, intellectual men and keep up with them,’” Nicks shared.

The singer-songwriter even offered some practical advice, telling the audience, “Don’t break up other people’s marriages. It backfires every time and it’s very bad karma and it will never work,” alluding to her own affair with Mick Fleetwood.

Nicks, who turns 66 later this month, also took a moment to address the young songwriters in the room and reminded them of the hard work that goes into building a successful career.

“This is what you have to look forward to if you really want to do this forever. You can, you just have to – as my mom would say – put your nose to the grindstone and go for it and just be determined and don’t let anybody get in your way,” she said, adding, “I probably won’t be here in thirty years. But my spirit will be with you.”

Earlier in the evening, the publisher of the year award was presented to Sony/ATV, the company behind 15 of the year’s most performed songs. The Lumineers’ hit “Ho Hey” was crowned song of the year and the award for songwriter of the year came down to a four-way tie between Levine, Jeff Bhasker and Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) and Ryan Lewis, each of whom penned three songs on the most performed list.

Other guests in attendance included Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, Jordin Sparks, Jason Derulo, Michelle Branch, Skylar Grey and Andy Grammer.

Huffington Post Stevie Nicks BMI ICON (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/charles-karel-bouley/bmi-icon-stevie-nicks-lea_b_5325441.html)

One of the top performance right's agencies in the country BMI Music has added a name to the prestigious list of Icons at the 67th Annual BMI Pop Awards hosted at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel May 13th, 2014. Last year's icon, the very blonde Adam Levine, was on hand, as was BMI Icon David Foster. But the spotlight of the evening was on not just a songwriting dynamo, but a person who defines legend.

"Of all the awards, I have to say, tonight is the night of my life. Because it means you noticed, you get it, that behind all of the madness and the music is a songwriter. So many times no one bothers to notice, and tonight, you have."

How could they not? The person making the statement truly is an icon of modern day rock music, as defined by Webster's Dictionary --icon: a person or thing representative of something.

She is Stevie Nicks, who is not just an icon, but a survivor -- quite literally -- of rock music's heyday. And she is a songwriter, make no mistake about that. Hits that she penned for herself and her band, Fleetwood Mac, not only sold millions of copies worldwide, but as a woman, she helped blaze a trail for female singer/songwriters.

Singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks, recipient of the BMI Icon Award, attends the 2014 BMI Pop Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on May 13, 2014 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Chelsea Lauren/WireImage)

She gave an almost 30 minute acceptance speech, which was more like a crash course in how to be a rockstar AND hit songwriter and live; she recalled how she would shut the press down during interviews.

"If anyone would come in and start asking what it feels like to be a sexy Pop star or a sex symbol I would say 'This interview is over, because you obviously don't know who I am,'" she recalled. "I'm a songwriter first and foremost, yes, I'm kinda cute and can dance a little and maybe can hold an arena full of people every now and again for a few hours, but I'm a songwriter first."

And she recounted the hits, and the motivations, it became a riveting life-lesson through song.

...Message of that one, don't break up someone's marriage. Nothing good will ever come of it...and then there's 'Landslide,' That was the song that was so important to me. Was I to stay writing and performing with Lindsey (Buckingham), go solo, go home? I was ready, it was time for something to change, to happen and 'Landslide' is what happened. We joined Fleetwood Mac, which was a good thing, and began a new journey

The room sat rapt while she spoke, because it was filled with songwriters old and new. The older ones related to Nicks when she said, "The music industry is a mess right now, radio is a mess right now, but it's us, it's our mess. We can fix it and make it fun. Look, I'll be 66 years old this year, you can write songs for your entire life so if you're going to do this for another 30 yeas or so, shouldn't it be fun? We must make changes to take back music and our industry and bring the joy back to it."

The awards themselves moved at a new pace this year, due in part to Michael O'Neill, BMI's recently named CEO, and a stricter adherence to schedule. When you get hundreds of creative people in a venue like the Beverly Wilshire, add cocktails and good food...it can be like herding unruly sheep. Some people only see each other at these awards and business is often done everywhere from the lobby to the men's room. That's right, Charles Kelley (drop dead gorgeous and tall) from Lady Antebellum (who killed it along with Adam Levine, Sheryl Crow and Shakira in the Stevie Nicks tribute) was in the restroom at the sink with a songwriter telling him to be sure to send over any more tracks like the last one. The songwriter seemed very happy.
