people are saying they rocked the 1st song, and you could hear LB at the start, I honestly thought the other guys loud guitars really over lapped his , once I saw he had his acostic, I was disapointed, and I had my surround sound turned up but could barely hear him ?

anyone agree ? or maybe I should re watch ?

I could hear him throughout that first piece. It sounded like he had some lead playing even. My mom was watching it with me and didn't know where he was on the stage, but was like "that's definitely Lindsey on guitar" because she could hear him.

I think Lindsey stole the show. His picking was easily recognizable and I just thought it stole the show. It was what was most noticeable about the performance.

Everyone's experience is different, but yes, you should re-watch  I heard him clearly throughout. If you saw an uploaded video, and not the actual broadcast, it may just have had poor audio

Lindsey's guitar playing was pretty much the core of the first song. And he also had prominent vocal parts.

Yes, I was surprised that I could hear him so much on the vocals.

To me, they really rocked. And Lindsey's sound immediately reminded me WORLD TURNING, don't you agree?

And yes, I heard clearly his voice.

What's the name of that first song?

Yes! It sounded a lot like World Turning.

Overall, the moment was a complete mess. But Lindsey came out looking good.

definitely. and Lindsey impressed, especially because people don't really know him and what he can do, so many were pleasantly surprised. i mean he had all his signature moves that are so well known to us, but not to the average person out there, who doesn't know how aggressive he can be on stage and how hard he can rock (i mean, the guy is in that soft rock band, no? ;) ). i love having these videos of him with Trent et al!!

i thought he was really highlighted and his guitar was easily discernible at the beginning of Copy of A. as well as his high harmony (which i personally didn't like much, but i'm always more into deeper voices). once when Homme came in his guitar became louder in the mix and i didn't like it that much since the part he was playing is i think really Lindsey's part on the record, where it's so much more impressive. plus whoever is normally doing it at NIN shows sounds more interesting on that part too (maybe they use prerecorded stuff / loop there, i don't remember). but they were doing it as a group so i guess that's nice, and Lindsey couldn't do both acoustic and electric at the same time.

i liked QOTSA song, thought it was pretty tight although disliked Homme's live vox on most of it. i half-expect head-banging from Linds on that song every time i watch it, lol. he looked like he enjoyed it and had no problem fitting in and doing some hard rocking. :)

really really hope this album and appearance together is not the end of Buck-Reznor collaborations, and they do something together again in the relatively near future!

The Grammys: Lindsey Buckingham’s Redemption & Mixed Signals For Guitar Music

New guitar heroes struggle to make an impression as the legends of yesteryear triumph at The Grammys; meanwhile Lindsay Buckingham finally gets his due.

Tuesday, 28. January 2014 - by David Hayter

Love them or hate them The Grammys are the biggest, best and, let’s face it, the only music awards show that really matters. The winners might be arbitrary and the panel always rewards success over artistry, but this is the only glitzy shindig that’s happy to let country, jazz, traditional R&B and classical music stand shoulder to shoulder with Jay-Z and Beyonce.

It may be bloated, but it delivers once in a lifetime moments (where else would you see Bob Dylan playing with Mumford & Sons?) and, for better or worse, it provides a solid gauge of where the music industry is heading.

So what did the 2014 edition tell us about guitar music?

Lindsey Buckingham Is Finally Cool & Recognized As A Guitar Hero

Closing a show which featured Katy Perry being burned at the stake, robots rocking with Stevie Wonder, and Macklemore leading 30 couples through their wedding vows as Madonna ushered in their first dance (seriously that happened), is an unenviable task.

The Grammys decided to place their faith in the once ridiculed Fleetwood Mac songwriter and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who has been reclaiming his guitar hero throne on the road this year. The guitarist joined forces with the Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age and Dave Grohl adding some delicious, darting, countrified intensity to Trent Reznor’s “A Copy” before joining in the tumultuous jamming session that ensued when Josh Homme hit the stage.

He’s spent a long time in the wilderness, but Lindsay is finally getting the respect he deserves.

Ah, but he could... by using a looper and a guitar that can be played as electric and acoustic. He could have done the whole thing on a Model 1, actually, using the Piezo to get the acoustic sounds and then switching to the humbucker.

I actually thought he was playing that part because it sounded so much like a Lindsey solo, until I saw the other guy playing it.

yup, because it was originally a Lindsey solo that he recorded in the studio with Reznor. :) although i liked it much better when NIN did it in their concerts (a really prominent part, from what i've seen) than what Homme did at the grammys.

but i guess they were trying to make sure they all get to contribute / fit in their "supergroup".

the best i can come up with is that they are actually thinking of Fleetwood Mac being ridiculed at certain periods (Mick with Samantha Fox, i'd rather jack than fleetwood mac, that phase), when they were extremely uncool to say the least. although LB was not even with the band at the time. ;)

“In my younger days, I was mistaken for a whore. I guess you can say I lived in shame.”

I think they were mocked. Tom Petty said he didn't take them seriously and that that was a mistake on his part.

Sunday I read two things from bloggers. One just said "Stevie Nicks and her sidekick" and the other was rejoicing in Christine's return and enumerating Stevie and Christine's long line of hits and noted that Lindsey only had Big Love, Tusk and GYOW, that's all because he wasn't a very good writer. The blogger didn't say whether he had anything else to recommend him aside from those awful writing skills, but I got the impression that he probably didn't.

But those are contemporary. The original comment indicated it was a historical thing... ie that for a long time he was ridiculed and finally recently it's been reveresed.

actually Mick wrote about that in his book, during white album touring days when they were touring with Loggins etc... but i'm not sure that the writer of this article has nearly as much insight as your post would expect him to (although i might be underestimating him).

also, i think the bulk of what you wrote can be sorted under him being "overlooked" (as a guitarist, producer, songwriter, arranger, etc etc) not necessarily mocked.

either way, i'm glad he's slowly getting his due. displaying his guitar skills while jamming with a bunch of much younger alternative rockers in front of the mass audience (and away from all that FM / SN's ex baggage) certainly seems like a good and enjoyable way for him to do it.

I think you hit it on the head. When he's able to get away from that stupid SN baggage he can stand on his own. Seeing him solo, sometimes I wish he would not play any FM tunes. And I wish he would stop writing about her.

I think there is a misunderstanding on the part of some of these two-bit bloggers. It's true that Lindsey may have been seen as a sidekick to Stevie some time ago, but at least since the SYW tour, he has been the most eye-catching member of the band and the object of much praise. In fact, as long as I can remember, Lindsey has always been showered with critical acclaim. So I am not sure where these so-called scribes are getting this history of ridicule directed at the man. I can remember being in college and reading Rolling Stone articles calling Lindsey a musical genius.

I don't think anyone criticized Lindsey in particular. I just think they had a negative view of FM after Rumours and didn't consider them rockers. The problem was they didn't distinguish between Lindsey and Christine and probably lumped them all into the same category.

The articles would be ridiculing FM, not Lindsey specifically, but he was written off as just being that guy from FM and FM was not a band to respect.

I think he is mocked, but not for anything he's done as an individual because, as you say, I'm not sure that everyone is aware of his individual abilities. I think he is mocked as being a member of FM, that band that plays Don't Stop. Even some of the Grammy finale announcements knocked him beforehand. They didn't understand him being paired with the rockers and were smirking about it.

As Petty said:

We didn't quite know whether to like Stevie or not, because we kind of saw this big corporate rock band, Fleetwood Mac, which was wrong, they were actually artistic people. But in those days, nobody trusted that sort of thing and we just kept thinking, 'What does she want from us?'

I think this was the general opinion of FM. They are too commercial. They have made too much money. They are not to be taken seriously. They are prostitutes.

reading a paper, saw a review... said he was a visionary, but nobody knew ;)

re "these so-called scribes" - we need to just take a peak into rumours or SN's forum here and we'll see tons of posts to that effect. i don't normally see it in articles that try to at least have an appearance of journalism. but they are usually all over the fan boards, blogs, facebook, under youtube vids - infighting of the various band-member fan factions. sooooo - time to admit - who of the ledgies wrote those blogs Michele referred to?? :p

although i was pleasantly surprised how scarce those were. when Hesitation Marks came out almost every single post or tweet i read was a complete consternation of what would a member of FM be doing on the NIN album. not so much now... people are getting used to it. hope it continues and also that he provides more reasons to be known for his incredible work and musicianship.

Interestingly, there isn't one of my guitar-playing friends who doesn't think Lindsey is amazing. Now, they'll complain about echoey vox efects and weird music, but they seem to agree that the man can play a guitar.

I have heard more than once that FMac was perceived as a "pop" band because of the records but then their live show was very much rock n roll. So I can see where people who only know them from the slick, Top 40 singles would have a different perception.

Agreed - I noticed right away, and even mentioned to my hubby that Lindsey's picking style was so very noticable.
