View Full Version : Mick Confirms On Stage - Christine to Rejoin Band

Mick announced on stage tonight in Maui while he was playing at Uncle Willie K's Blues Festival that Christine is rejoining the band. Exact words were "This is the worst kept secret there is, but Christine McVie will be rejoining Fleetwood Mac!"
It was right after Willie did an acoustic rendition of Songbird with Mick on the talking drum.
Was a great performance. Mick played starting with that song, and then Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top came out. Mick played with Willie, Billy and the band for 5-6 songs after that. Was a PHENOMENAL night of blues. Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers also joined them.
Glad I accidentally had a vacation in Maui right now :D

This news has depressed me slightly. It makes my experience at the 02 in last September feel less unique.
Mind you, if they get a new album out of it I suppose that's something. Not that I'm all too keen on the idea of a new album but still.

I know what you mean, but I have a feeling there will be studio music from this new reunion. Plus, what we saw at the O2 is still unique - she hadn't performed with them for 15 years and it was an awesome atmosphere. I won't forget how deafening the applause was, or how good Don't Stop sounded.

Yeah man. Thing is, now she's back with them they'll probably start performing "Everywhere" again. They didn't perform that one at the 02 and I was slightly dissapointed (although I did know beforehand that they wouldn't be doing it). I know not everyone likes that song - but it's the first FM song I can remember hearing on the radio when I was 9.
I'm not going to put myself through trying to get tickets to see them again. Just do not need the hassle. Sometimes it's best just to count yourself lucky that you managed it in the first place and not try to get greedy.
If I hear that they start doing that jam again on live gigs, and there's a strong possibility I'll never see it... I'm gonna be pretty p o'd.

I hope this is the one time we don't have to take what Mick says with a grain of salt. Great news and this would actually get me out to a concert again as long as some new material made it on to the set list and Rumours got the long overdue trimming to 3-4 songs. (In your dreams

Fantastic news! I was doubtful at first but boy, was I wrong! Don't think I'll be shelling out more money to see them again (I only barely managed to get tickets for Birmingham), unless I win the lottery or some online competition giving away tickets. But it's still great that she's back!

I'm just hoping they will use this as a vehicle to rerelease BN - maybe with the new FM album or on the heels.
It will be interesting to see them all together though since I've never seen the 5.

Yeah it was an obvious set up for BN. I don't get this move at all except as a real FM farewell and the publicity. It will be a short tour, I'm sure.

I just wish Christine had had this epiphany about two years ago. Then they could have made an album with her and toured behind it. I'm excited about Christine's return of course, but after this long greatest hits tour, part of me is ready to cycle back to solo careers.

Shhh... he was just starting to feel better! :p
No, in all seriousness, I think Maui showed her that she could get back up on stage again and play in front of an audience -- but London showed her that she could still get on stage with Fleetwood Mac and play to thousands of people. More importantly, I believe it also reminded her of the camaraderie and chemistry she had been missing.

I don't think that she anticipated the crowd going as ballistic as it did for her. I think that had a lot to do with it as well. It's nice to be missed, needed and wanted.

Audience honestly didn't seem to care that much. I mean a few people did but I went nuts, obviously and people kinda looked at me weird. It was very much more of a locals in lawn chairs kinda crowd even though there were several thousand people there.
I took a picture during Songbird though it didn't come out super amazing:

No balls!
Willie K also started talking about having jammed with Mick and Mick said he didn't remember that. Willie K then said "well we jammed it's not my fault if you don't remember!" Was pretty funny.
Mick played with them on ZZ Top's "Thunderbird" "Sharp Dressed Man" "La Grange" and they did a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" which was also amusing. They did another song I wasn't sure what it was if it was a blues standard or a ZZ song, not sure.

Several thousand? I thought it was a restaurant crowd of maybe 30 people or so?
Don't tell Stevie they performed that Nancy Sinatra song. Michele, I bet you think that Mick read it here first and then got the idea to do it, ey?

Nope, it was much bigger than that, and outdoor. It was at Tropical Plantation, and they set up a pretty big stage and pretty big area. This is their first event and they want to set this place up as "the Maui event place" for future larger shows. It's a beautiful setting. I don't think they were expecting as many people as showed up-- they ran out of food. I think it was probably around 3,000 people really. So much moving around with the set up that it was a bit hard to tell. I had a good spot up about 5 people back.
Apparently Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top does Boots quite a bit. I looked it up on youtube and his stuff came up.

Yes, I think she was offered a sweet deal for one more go round. Like I said, I don't understand the strategy exactly, unless it is for one last "Fleetwood Mac" album with her.
And, I am sad - not because of Christine, but the timing sucks. They had it all perfectly set up for a Buckingham Nicks release. This messes that up in my mind. Except obviously the marketing is different now. Stevie let that out when she talked about Grohl encouraging her to release her IYD movie - it gave her album another push. I would have thought it should have all been released together. So, she probably did get more life out of it that way.
All we can do is wait and see what happens next. I do look forward to new music.

It has been reported that CM sold everything including her songs when she quit the band and moved back to the UK...So the question is if she sold the copyrights to her songs does she still get royalty checks for anything??? Taxes are steep in the UK and if she's not making any money from the songs she wrote then that large nest egg she started with may now be tiny...There's almost a 100% chance this is about money...Christine may be board but she's not going to work for free...

I can't believe anybody would be anything but overjoyed with Christine's return. That just blows my mind.
We've had the Buckingham Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac since at least 2003. In eleven years, they've done an album and an EP, and have NOT released the BN album. As far as I'm concerned, they had their chance and blew it. What's stopping Stevie and Lindsey now from going out as Buckingham Nicks in support of that album? It's not like they're doing anything until summer. If a BN tour were as important to them as it is to some of you, they'd be doing it right now. Apparently that's not the case. Ultimately, the BN fans need to realize that having Christine back means another Fleetwood Mac album, and by default, THAT means more collaborations by Stevie and Lindsey. It's probably THE only way a Stevie-Lindsey collaboration happens at this point.

Well, thankfully there's a lot more to these things than mine or your opinions.
Christine is not the sole reason they didn't do another album and she's not the sole reason they will finally do another one. But, I will be just as glad as everyone else to have new music. However, I don't need her presence to feel it is a "complete" version of Fleetwood Mac and call that blasphemous if you want. I became a fan of the current lineup and being a Buckingham Nicks fan, I think I appreciate nostalgia just as much if not more than the next person. So, I welcome her return from that perspective and will continue to enjoy the band as I have been doing for the past several years.
I don't think the door is shut on Buckingham Nicks - there were far too many pieces in place for that to be totally out. Sound City promoted Buckingham Nicks, Stevie and Lindsey both said it will be released and hinted at a tour, they recorded Without You and sang it every night of the recent tour with Stevie saying she and Lindsey felt Buckingham Nicks was the best album they had ever done almost every night as well. Obviously, with Christine back they don't have time to squeeze in anything with BN right now - they have to rehearse with her and probably finish up the FM album. So, we'll see...
I think after the, "Don't Stop" appearance, even the band gets how stale they are without her.
I found them to be far from stale. This tour was amazing in every sense of the word. There was a new energy, I felt. Hopefully, that will continue.

Ultimately, the BN fans need to realize that having Christine back means another Fleetwood Mac album, and by default, THAT means more collaborations by Stevie and Lindsey. It's probably THE only way a Stevie-Lindsey collaboration happens at this point.
Amen! This whole "I am bummed because I really wanted a BN Reunion" flabbergasts me. Really? The last ten years have been BN and they haven't done a heck of a lot to really forge a significant new sound. Say You Will was impressive but fractured. The EP feels like a money grab.
At this point Christine is the best thing for the band. Exactly what Ken Caillat said in his Q and A back in 2005.

And Patti complaining about the prices of tickets after she's flown all around the world to see them.
Ouch  That's assuming a lot, no? Pattie has every right to go to as many concerts as she cares to go to, even if the pricing doesn't thrill her. I don't have much money and I go to a lot of their concerts. Lindsey is a high for me, and his music is something I can count on in life when a lot of other things aren't so great, so I prioritize and find a way to see him.
I think after the, "Don't Stop" appearance, even the band gets how stale they are without her.
I doubt they think they, themselves, are stale. I'm sure they're all confident enough in their own strengths, and can't see them doubting themselves because she's not there. She's their friend, and bandmate, and I would guess that they're happy to have her back with them, and professional enough to be able to move on without her. I look forward to seeing the five of them together, and I love her voice in the mix, for sure, but, I'm just fine, thank you, with only four, as well...or better still, one.

I don't think the EP was a money grab. In fact, I think it was an attempt to be more than a money grab, but the idea of a Buckingham Nicks album is an absurdity at this point. Christine is bringing something fresh to this band, which badly needed to be rejuvenated. But even if she wasn't, even if all she brought was more Rumours, having her back is so much better than having the four.
Steve is right. I believe SnL are a better duo with Christine in the mix, even aside from the type of trio they make together. Michele

I found them to be far from stale. This tour was amazing in every sense of the word. There was a new energy, I felt. Hopefully, that will continue.
I love Buckingham Nicks.. and I could listen to the album over and over again. but the 4 of them running FMac is so stale to me. It's just two egos instead of a band. It doesn't seem like a band to me and I think that's my issue with them. I need that chemistry and magic that has made them a band and I'm hoping that CM brings it back. The EP was so lame in my opinion.

I only discovered FM this year, have never seen them live (thanks, cancelled tour...), and the entire reason for loving them - for me - is basically Stevie and Lindsey. I am disappointed I won't get to see a SnL led Fleetwood Mac tour. I am disappointed at what the setlist will probably be (yes, I am seriously upset I won't get to see, most likely, WY or SG, etc). I am disappointed that the onstage dynamic will probably be different now. I do enjoy the mix of vocals with the three of them but, quite honestly, the only plus side of this for me is that we'll probably get a new album and I'll have some new SnL songs to listen to...
Look, I don't begrudge anyone's joy and delight over Chris' return but it's not the only legitimate viewpoint and it doesn't make me less of a fan or a person. I won't skip her songs on an album and I won't take a bathroom break during them at a gig but I'm NOT thrilled about this and I'm NOT thrilled with the way people are acting towards those who aren't over the moon about this news. I enjoy the music and live videos for SnL's voices, for their chemistry, for their dialogue in song, etc. I see it still - I see more energy this year, more of a connection, and more happiness there. I don't feel anything is missing or stale and yes, that's probably something lacking in me but I don't connect emotionally with Christine's stuff on the same level as I do with SnL and I'm not sorry about it.
Sorry if this offends anyone but it's the simple truth. For me.

Christine is not the sole reason they didn't do another album and she's not the sole reason they will finally do another one.
I completely disagree. Stevie was refusing to do new music before Christine's return. Lindsey did everything he could to get her to do SOMETHING with the band, even writing songs for her to sing, and what we got from that was an EP of three new Lindsey Buckingham songs and a rerecording of an old Buckingham Nicks song. Without Christine, it's over, at least in terms of albums. And, don't forget that Stevie was so insistent on having another woman in the band a few years back that we almost had Sheryl Crow in the band...So, don't underestimate how huge this really is for not only Fleetwood Mac, but also Stevie and Lindsey.
AThe last ten years have been BN and they haven't done a heck of a lot to really forge a significant new sound.
BINGO!
It's not like they've done enough in the past 16 years to give fans something to be sentimental about or to indicate that there's a future for them as a quartet. If they had given us three to five solid albums, then I could see people having mixed emotions. What we got was ONE new album, an EP, and two mostly Greatest Hits tours since 1998. If nothing else, if we have to endure another Greatest Hits tour, at least we'll have all five people who made those hits in the first place.

It's amazing that the idea of those two releasing the Buckingham Nicks album is still generating such noise. They missed the boat BIG TIME and it really has nothing to do with Christine coming back. When she departed in 1998, that is exactly when they should have re-released the album and toured behind it. The crazy amount of buzz surrounding FMac, Lindsey, and Stevie at that time will never be replicated again.

I think he sings better, plays better and is more creative when he's solo. With Nicks it seems so forced.
But with Christine he has another musician writer that he appreciates and I think he's happy to work with her. I venture to guess that's why they have so many collaborations as writers. Plus, Christine doesn't leave the studio to let LB do all the work. She hangs in there with the guys.

No kidding. And, when Dave Grohl introduced a whole new generation of fans to the BN album and Twitter was blowing up with them discovering it ... yeah, that would have been a good time...
The reason BN fans feel Christine coming back is important to BN is because Lindsey alluded to a BN focus after this FM tour. He said they didn't have time to put anything together during the break from the US leg to the UK leg. So, he talked about their options after the tour was over.

For me.
(also, I'm annoyed that this is going to probably push back Buckingham Nicks plans further)
HEAR, HEAR.
Sorry you missed this tour.

I'm sure he does. You could see the Mac set up in DR and it's in his studio too.

Is it me, or are the people who aren't happy that Christine's coming back seem to mostly be the people who never saw her with the band?
That could be it exactly...How many people at FM's shows were old enough to have bought TITN when it came out??? They probably have no concept of what the band was back in 1987...

I agree, and always found it ridiculous, people who insisted on blaming Lindsey for Christine leaving and/or not coming back. I was happy (though not surprised) when she said in those recent interviews about how he had tried to convince her to stay. So, since it's already a done deal, apparently, and she is coming back to tour, I'm going to enjoy it, and just hope that it doesn't go too long, and also that he does some serious writing in his off hours for a solo project.

I don't think age has anything to do with it though, I think it depends on what you like best about FM. For me it's Lindsey, so Christine coming back is not something I'm excited about. But does that make their (my) view and perspective any less legitimate? Does it make them any less of a fan? Certainly, I wasn't even born until 1990 so, NO, I didn't see them live with Christine. And I haven't seen them live with just Stevie and Lindsey upfront. That means I'm relying on lots of audio recordings from live shows, any video that exists from live shows, and from reviews. And I watch and listen to it. All. From 1975 until the Vegas gig. You can have a 'concept' of what it was like without living through it, although it's certainly not the same, unfortunately. No two fans are going to have an identical perspective on everything, anyway.
Just because I wasn't around then or because I haven't seen Chris with them doesn't mean I'm wrong or deluded for enjoying the band as a quartet and not missing Christine's presence. She's just not the draw for me in any way, to be honest - not back then, not now.

I have always been aware of Fleetwood Mac, but not a fan per se. I liked their songs but it was not the music I listened to. So, Christine's presence in the band was always in my mind as part of the image of Fleetwood Mac. I watched their videos on MTV, knew their singles. I even really liked Christine's solo singles.
I just never saw them live with her and became a fan after SYW was released.
So, it wouldn't be totally fair to say I didn't have a concept of what the band was with Christine. I get it.

I actually can appreciate that you have a different perspective. I like the fact that this band has gone on for so long that we all have different eras/segments that we like. You're entitled to your opinion and for sure a lot of people would agree with you that FMac fronted by B/N is the best version. I, on the other hand completely disagree.

Around here, I'm sure there are plenty.
Still, that's makes it all the more amazing to me. The legendary line-up of Fleetwood Mac was Mick, John, Christine, Stevie, and Lindsey. If you've never had the chance to see THAT, why would you NOT want to, or how could you NOT be excited about that. The quintet is the legend, NOT the quartet. Yes, and I've always been aware that that line-up of five was the band - grew up on their Greatest Hits. I just never knew their names individually or became interested in finding out more until this year. So, it was a surprise to me to find Christine was no longer with them.
Look, I'll happily go along and see them live and enjoy it. I just would prefer to see them without Chris, that's all. I'm not particularly fond of her songs live (think they're much better as studio creations) and, as I say, Stevie and Lindsey, individually and together, is what makes me interested and so time taken away from their songs live and on an album is something of a missed opportunity for me. I'd also prefer Buckingham Nicks to Fleetwood Mac. *shrugs* I don't care what is considered 'proper' or 'complete' - I care about what I enjoy.
I am thrilled for other people that she is back - I totally understand peoples' love of her and her music and I'm super glad you'll get a chance to see her live again or for the first time. I just don't share in it and selfishly have a different view. I don't see the quartet as watered down or incomplete in any way. It's just different.

Oh, what the hell? Get the pitchforks cos I'm another person who is not thrilled. AT ALL. No shame in admitting it either, to be honest.
I am disappointed that both fans and the media are and will be acting like FM have been treading water for the past 15 years just waiting for Chris' return. I LOVE SYW. I LOVE the EP. I do enjoy the mix of vocals with the three of them but, quite honestly, the only plus side of this for me is that we'll probably get a new album and I'll have some new SnL songs to listen to...

I also love SYW and EP, and while I am looking forward to hearing Chris (since I'm not getting solo tour yet), I completely understand this. You shouldn't have to apologize for not being excited about Chris's return. Sometimes we forget on here, that we haven't all been fans since the 70's, and we don't all live somewhere where we're blessed to be able to see a lot of shows (or tours). It reminds me of all the times I've seen posts on Facebook, or elsewhere, after a concert, and someone comes on and says, "where's Chrissie??", or "what, no Chris??", after claiming to be long-time, die-hard fans, and they're completely oblivious to the fact that she hasn't been with them for 15 years, by her own choice!! :distress: And to your credit, I like that you don't feel the need to bash the others in the band, or broadcast the fact that just because your favorite member of the band isn't front and center, that you might as well go to the bathroom, or get a drink, etc. Very classy on your part.

I'd agree if not for the fact that the last two tours have been Greatest Hits tours. I saw the SYW tour three times, and I had hoped that it would be a springboard for new Fleetwood Mac music. They COULD have built it into something very special and unique. They COULD have remained relevant as a band that releases new music.
But they didn't. Instead, they rehashed same old drama (that is boring, IMO, in the grand scheme of the band) from 1976 in 2009 and 2013. They never came close to getting away from the "where's Christine" factor. In short, outside of SYW, for a longtime fan, they really didn't give a compelling reason to see them or be interested in them without Christine, hence why I thought it was watered down.

I was born in 1987 so the SnL version of FWM is the only one I've been able to see in concert, but I can't wait to see Chis! I loved them since The Dance so she was in the band when I first started liking them. Stevie is my favorite followed equally by Chris and Lindsey. I've always loved her songs even if they don't seem to have much depth to them. She doesn't seem to have had much stage presence either. She's happy not being in the spot light unlike Stevie and Lindsey. Not a bad thing. Too many people fighting for attention would be a bad thing. I can't wait to see her! I agree with the comment that she is the only reason Stevie will put out new material with FWM. I liked Lindsey's songs on the EP. How was that a cash grab anyway? And yea they had since 1998 to release BN. Not Chris's fault. But it is her fault for a new FWM album so thank you Song Bird! See you this year

As for BN that was just a pipe dream. Lindsey was trying to get something going with that, but i don't see him having any success, even if Christine had stayed at home mired in polytunnels.

If the issue is it being a Greatest Hits tour, do you really think Chris' presence is going to change it all that much? Certainly, if they do a new album we might get a couple of new tracks live but they did that for SYW touring as well (though I was disappointed at how some were dropped so quickly or throughout). Overall, we'll have less obscure and unplayed tracks, I would imagine. Which I do understand though won't be thrilled about.
Yes, I understand that. They have a habit of rolling out the dramatics when the time comes for a new album and tour and it's eyeroll-worthy. However, is it possible that SOME longtime fans exist who still found them a viable live band without Christine, who enjoyed what was played and the dynamic there, and found it interesting?
If Christine HAD been there, there's no reason to think there would be some HUGE shift in what happened - Fleetwood Mac is Fleetwood Mac. They're a big live band - it's going to be a predictable setlist with barely any new songs, they're going to stir up drama for the media just in time for an album and show, etc. It may be watered down in terms of 'presence' ie. that her not being there made it feel 'less' or that something was missing, but I don't think her not being there had much of an impact on the main issue you mentioned - the feeling of it being a greatest hits tour. Certainly, Unleashed was much more of that anyway and I think you can feel that. This year, although not that fundamentally different in terms of setlist, I think the vibe was much better and more energetic and happier.
Yes, I wish they had pursued Fleetwood Mac as a more viable entity in the studio and as purveyors of new music after SYW, but I can understand why not and don't begrudge them their solo work, or the safety of 'greatest hits' moneymaking, tbh. It's a shame but, to me, I still don't see it as watered down from what The Dance was, for example.

Thanks for breaking the news! It will be great to see Christine back where she belongs.

I don't think it would have ever equaled what they had, but at least it would have been something respectable. It's ironic, but I remember Lindsey making the "lounge act" comments about Stevie's and Christine's solo sets in the 1980s, and about Fleetwood Mac after he quit, but that's pretty much what they were.

I can't wait to see Chis! I've always loved her songs even if they don't seem to have much depth to them.
Out of curiosity, have you listened to any pre-1975 Fleetwood Mac albums? They are actually what brought me around in regards to loving Christine. Her earlier Mac songs seem to be a bit more emotional & raw. She was once the mystical lady of Fleetwood Mac, too. She was wearing shawls & singing about love crossing time & space before anyone had heard of Stevie Nicks. In case you haven't delved into pre-1975 Christine, go stream "Prove Your Love" and "Why." Chris definitely seemed to shift her style some when Lindsey & Stevie joined. But once I connected with those early Chris songs, I started falling for the rest. And began realizing how vital she was to the signature sound that we all collectively know as Fleetwood Mac. :)

I think Lindsey had the same hopes, and I don't think he prefers rehashing to putting out new music, but he can't write all the songs on an FM album. Well, he could, but then it would be more like a solo album, and everyone would be mad at him for that.
Also, I think You and Nicole are kind of like both ends of the FM spectrum. Everyone came into this band at different times, and for so may different reasons. Just as many were there when Rumours came out, and fell in love with the harmonies, or the soap opera :p or the music itself, many others fell in love with this band after seeing The Dance (either in '97) or in repeats, over the years). Those fans were more than likely sucked in by the drama of Stevie and Lindsey. Others discovered this band even later, and fell in love with the band without Chris being a part of it, and so, even if they might like her, once they get to know her/see her, I can understand why they wouldn't care whether she's with them or not. I knew this band as a kid growing up in the 70's, but I only really got into them after seeing Live In Boston on TV in 2008. Lindsey's performance on that show is what did it for me, and my feelings for the rest of them came after diving headfirst into everything I could find about him. So, it shouldn't surprise anyone that someone doesn't care about her return, or if someone does care about it. Same for how we feel about a certain album. We can debate the merits based on music, or musicianship, or production, or what have you, but if someone came into the game due to their love of SYW, or because they saw them in concert in '09 or '13 I doubt they're going to say, it would have been so much better if Chris had been involved.

I think the overwhelming majority of people will be excited about the reunion. All you have to do is look at the gross ticket sales from The Dance tour. They have not even come close to breaking that record in subsequent tours. The people who post on The Ledge are only the tiniest fraction of fans that represent the fan base. It might actually be worse. My attitude is if they're going to do a Greatest Hits tour, then I'd rather they do that with Christine than without, because THAT was the band that made the music in the first place.
Overall, we'll have less obscure and unplayed tracks, I would imagine. Which I do understand though won't be thrilled about.
I agree, thought Christine's return really SHOULDN'T impact it. It will, but it SHOULDN'T. They've always been bad about taking risks. (I mean, I'd be all for replacing "Songbird" with "Never Forget," but that probably won't happen.)
However, is it possible that SOME longtime fans exist who still found them a viable live band without Christine, who enjoyed what was played and the dynamic there, and found it interesting?
Yeah, but there are people who think Journey is a viable live band.
It may be watered down in terms of 'presence' ie. that her not being there made it feel 'less' or that something was missing
Her voice, her unique keyboards (the Fleetwood-McVie-McVie rhythm section), her SONGS...There was a LOT missing.
but I don't think her not being there had much of an impact on the main issue you mentioned - the feeling of it being a greatest hits tour.
But, if what we're getting is a "Rumours" era Greatest Hits tour, wouldn't it make MORE sense to have the "Rumours" band in full? If not, then it's watered-down, IMO.

I'd agree that the majority are/will be excited and rightfully so.
However, I don't think the justification for thinking that is in the ticket sales differing... I think there are more factors (publicity of MTV's The Dance, a reunion after a long time, over-saturation of the touring market or not) involved than just Christine's presence or not, to be honest, in comparing how, say, the 1997 reunion concert/s sold than a tour in 2013 with the same line-up as other fairly recent tours.

And yea they had since 1998 to release BN. Not Chris's fault. But it is her fault for a new FWM album so thank you Song Bird! See you this year
I love Chris's songs, and there's no denying she's written some of their biggest hits. I love her ballads from Tusk, and no way can I resist turning up the volume for YMLF or SYLM. Personally, I don't think she lacks depth at all. Her style is more subtle, but it's beautiful.
I do agree that she lacks stage presence, however, and that that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just like with her music, her demeanor adds a balance. I don't think it will take away from the drama, but may provide a refuge to those that find the drama to be  too much ;) What I fear most is the fact that while I get to hear Chris, and that's good, it also means hearing less of Lindsey, which, for me, isn't good :(

It might actually be worse. My attitude is if they're going to do a Greatest Hits tour, then I'd rather they do that with Christine than without, because THAT was the band that made the music in the first place.
Sure. Makes perfect sense. It just leaves even less room for manoeuvre regarding slipping rarely played or new songs in the set, I think.
I agree, thought Christine's return really SHOULDN'T impact it. It will, but it SHOULDN'T. They've always been bad about taking risks. (I mean, I'd be all for replacing "Songbird" with "Never Forget," but that probably won't happen.)
Hahaha to the bracketed. Because yeah, now THAT'S what one could call a pipedream. :D
Her voice, her unique keyboards (the Fleetwood-McVie-McVie rhythm section), her SONGS...There was a LOT missing.
And I completely understand that, which is why I'm very happy for that vast majority of people who have really missed that. For me, personally, I honestly don't miss any of that - I miss the sound of Stevie, Lindsey AND Chris' voices blending, I think, but that's really it. I mean, I'll bop along to some of Chris' songs with the best of them but I feel the loss of certain other things MORE with her back, than the loss of her when she's gone. Again, just a different POV from a differently aged, differently focused fan, lol.
But, if what we're getting is a "Rumours" era Greatest Hits tour, wouldn't it make MORE sense to have the "Rumours" band in full? If not, then it's watered-down, IMO.
Hahaha, yes, it would. But as much as they like running Rumours into the ground, it can never make up the entire setlist. And it's the less played songs we'll not get - and, for me, as enjoyable as seeing Chris will/would be, that's the real bummer... Sound-wise, yes, it's probably watered-down some and I think some songs suffer from a lack of Chris in the vocal mix more than others. I still enjoy the result tremendously, however. That might be different if I really did connect with Chris' contributions more and wasn't as keen on SnL and that whole thing. And if I'd been to a lot of shows to enable me to become bored with the whole overplayed show. :D

I wouldn't. They aren't going to drop Songbird, but the chances that they will put a Tusk song that hasn't yet been performed live in the set from Christine is very high I'd think.

It's interesting to read all of these different posts exhibiting different opinions. For me, this is Fleetwood Mac coming back. I am fortunate enough to have seen them 3 times since 2003: the first two with no Christine, and the third with her on just one song. At all times at the first two concerts in '03 and '09, I felt that there was too much of a lurch between Stevie's songs and Lindsey's songs, and none of that 'happy middle' which Christine provided. For me, that lurch made the concerts less of an enjoyable experience. When she came to London last year, it was clear from just one song what a difference she makes - it was ineffable.
On a purely selfish note, I really hope that they play more TITN material now that she is back. I want to hear Little Lies again, and I would love to hear Isn't It Midnight. I am not a particular fan of the Tusk songs, so I don't care to hear any more material from that album than I have already heard. Different strokes, and all that...

Great news! My opinion of 'Say You Will' and the post-Christine FM is that they were good without her ... but with her they were transcendently fabulous.
My own personal pipedream is that they would eliminate the backing vocalists and musicians and perform live on stage, just the five of them. Those backing vocalists and musicians make the live show much too polished. I want to hear it if someone makes a mistake or if a harmony isn't exactly right. Live rock 'n' roll is supposed to be raw around the edges. But I have no realistic expectation of this actually happening.

 my feelings exactly. All of what you said.
Wonder whether all people lamenting that current reincarnation is stale have seen them in concert in 2013? Because they were tight and rocking, far from stale.
That said,i was one of the lucky people who got to see them a lot last year- and so I've seen enough of the 4 in 2013, and would not go see them again in 2014 if it was the same configuration. If Christine is back, I definitely want to experience the version of the greatest hits performed by the 5. Plus I think we will actually get Lindsey solo back muchfaster if Christine tours with them this summer than if it's still just the 4 in the summer and then they follow that with a full fledged return of the 5.
As for the ticket prices, I don't see them commanding the rolling stones prices, far from it, esp not in the US or continental Europe. UK may be a very different story. But that's talking about face. Mick's tickets may be a very different story. During 2013 he charged around $400, so that was doable especially since at some venues the face was well over $200. During Unleashed I've heard that he charged $ 1200 or so for basically the same thing. That's astronomical.

I can agree with this. If we do have to have another FM tour rather than solo work, I'd rather hear Lindsey/Stevie/Christine than just Lindsey/Stevie/backup singers. I hope this means they lose the backup singers, because they are always one of my least favorite parts of a current FM show. Their voices are fine, they just don't sound like Fleetwood Mac to me.

Their presence in the Mac show used to bother me, but based on the videos of 2013 I've seen on YouTube, not anymore. I don't think the Nicks and Buckingham voices have held up very well, and the backup vocalists were the only singers carrying a lot of the melodies, like the Go Your Own Way chorus.
I recently rented the Blu-ray of Lindsey's solo concert, and I was super-pleased with the vocalizing he and his backups created. They sounded marvelous.

I don't think the Mac is going to finish up any faster whether she appears this summer or later. I'd take this summer as a season preview. But I guess it depends on what their schedule is this summer. I would expect for it to be very light. If it's heavy, then I see your point.

The quartet was a watered down, incomplete version of the quintet.
Yup! And, that reinforces my bitch about conversations/threads about the current lineup being in the Rumours section of The Ledge. Without Christine, it's NOT the Rumours crew. I don't care HOW you try to justify it, you're flat-out WRONG!
I agree. On the other hand, I don't want to see Peter Green, so ...
Michele
{sigh}
I always wanted to see Bob Welch/McVie led band.
Saw them 2x's in '74...my first two Fleetwood Mac concerts.
I saw him in 1998, and I'm good. If Peter Green still had an inkling of that fire, I'd be all for it.
Actually, that only strengthens the case for Christine’s return. They all still have it. They’re all well and they can still do it well.
Never thought that Peter DIDN'T "have that fire"...he just had a different vision of how he wanted to play in '98 than he did in '70. I don't think there's any guitarist who has played the same way, with the same "fire", after 28 years.
Christine's coming back for one reason...it's Fleetwood Mac's Grande Finale tour. It's been pretty obvious that Fleetwood Mac hasn't been Fleetwood Mac since 1998. Mick wasn't going to let Fleetwood Mac sail into the sunset being Stevie & Lindsey's feeble attempt at being Buckingham Nicks again under an assumed (and more well-known) name.

As far as staleness goes, it's all relative. I enjoyed the Unleashed tour immensely. I enjoyed this Live 2013 tour better by comparison, but I don't think Unleashed was bad or that it was a lot different than the SYW tour. I found them to be equal. Yet, after the fact, Stevie expressed ennui during Unleashed and a lot of fans now say it was dull too. I hear that complaint now, but I did not hear it so much at the time.
Stale is what you're comparing it to.
Even though I have enjoyed FM's last three tours, there are some songs that definitely are stale to my ears. I realized that The Chain was weak, but I didn't quite see (hear) how much so until I saw Lindsey perform it with Little Big Town and I thought, "THAT is what has been missing." When the back up singers did such a sublime job on Beautiful Child, layering vocals with Lindsey and Stevie, it just made me realize how rare it was for them to enhance a song. When with Christine there the reverse was true. Most songs benefitted from beautiful harmonies, not just the occasional song. The Rhiannon choruses used to be as ethereal as Beautiful Child, but they no longer are.
Now, that they're all older, they probably won't sound as good together as they used to anyway, but I have hopes.

I think you may be right about this being a Grand Finale final tour and perhaps album if we're lucky. Which is really a bummer, because I'd love to see this be a continuing thing. I don't think you're right about the reasoning for it. The recent incarnation has been one of the most monetarily successful touring acts ever. They're at the top of their game, not the bottom. This news only pumps it up further.

Yeah, I think some people here are projecting their opinions onto the band. The band doesn't feel that way and I think they're very happy with the band as it is currently.
I think they were happy except for the fact that Lindsey (and I guess Mick too) wanted to do new music.
Judging from the way he talked about Without You and Stevie wanting to do that song, while he was trying to push new songs, I don't think Lindsey was very interested in reviving Buckingham Nicks except to the extent that it was a way to get at her by the back door. If he could interest her in working on old songs, maybe he could get new songs in the process and then they could be the modern day BN, with Fleetwood Mac.
I think he would have been quite happy with the quartet if they kept putting out new music. He was proud with them as a band on stage, thinks they're playing the best they've ever played. What was lacking was the studio component. In fact, he said after SYW that if he could keep recording with Fleetwood Mac, he would never have to release solo music again. But that didn't happen. Without them making new music, I think he was restless with Fleetwood Mac and ashamed to be "that" nostalgia group. If he could have recorded new music with Stevie, then I would agree that he was happy with the band currently. But it was like pulling teeth. He got the EP and now he was left with the task of releasing more songs after that, some way, some how. It was a battle.
As for Stevie, I think she was happy touring with the current band. She seemed content this tour -- but we usually don't find out that she was unhappy until afterwards anyway. So, it's hard to say. But I don't think she was interested in doing new music with them. Now, whether it would be her first choice or not, if Christine returns she will undoubtedly make new music with The Mac.
To your point, I agree that none of them thought they needed Christine back to make them fresh or relevant on stage, though. I think they were all proud of their current live sound.

I think everyone is just speculating about what's to come. We should just wait and see what happens. Maybe Christines return will reinvigorate the band and their attitude towards the group dynamic. I personally don't feel this will be the grand finale, Christine is their proverbial golden goose and with her on board they'll only make even more money on tour. Think about, the Rumours lineup touring again? Tickets would sell out in milliseconds

It would be great to see the complete Rumours band in the flesh plus crate some magic in the studio which they did almost 40 years ago.It would be great since I never seen the Rumours lineup in action live before. My first FM concert was in 1987.So this would be priceless if it happens.
I have mixed feelings on if they will be doing a final tour together.I hope they will go on like the Stones and other bands .

Right. Buckingham Nicks doing Fleetwood Mac songs is still not exactly Buckingham Nicks.
Really? Seriously? Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks, singing Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks tunes is STILL "Buckingham Nicks" (with an infinitely better rhythm section, however) especially this last tour. Matters not if the songs were used on Fleetwood Mac albums. They still played the Buckingham Nicks card quite often in interviews and stage banter throughout the tour. That just pretty much told the world where their heads were...wasn't to promote the Fleetwood Mac legacy...they were tooting their own horn. There was a Fleetwood Mac before them, but you RARELY hear them (especially now) mention that fact. Even after one of the better known former members had f-ing DIED, they act like he didn't exist. (and that's from the English members, too)
Buckingham Nicks is not Fleetwood Mac without Christine McVie. As much as this last tour had a lot more tooting their own horns .......it's still not Buckingham Nicks but it does come close.

I wasn't crazy about "Temporary One" or the stuff from "Time." I bet if there is a new album, the stuff won't be much better. I hope she proves me wrong.
If there is no new album, then it's just another nostalgia tour, except they will now be able to add four or five Christine songs. Whopeee!

I became a Fleetwood Mac fan because of The Dance, but never saw the band in person with Christine McVie. Then, I became a big fan of Buckingham Nicks. It is not hard to see where my main interest lies, but I've had the opportunity to see them front Fleetwood Mac many, many times. Adding Christine to the mix again will make it different and fresh. New music could also have done that, but alas, Stevie did not produce on that score.
I was THRILLED to hear Without You performed on tour. It was like a dream come true. The idea of a Buckingham Nicks tour is also terribly exciting to me. However, I'm willing to wait another year for that if it means I can see Christine with the band at last. The same is true for the solo material. It's not as if her return means we'll never see LB or SN solo again - it just means we wait a bit longer for it.
For me, there's always been Buckingham Nicks, and then Fleetwood Mac... separate entities. I want to see Christine as part of the entity that is FM. I want to see BN on their own terms. I still believe that can happen.
I believe we can have it ALL! Christine and FM now, BN/solo later. No, BN/solo later is not guaranteed... but it never has been guaranteed. If Stevie and Lindsey mean what they've been saying and if the re-release of BN is truly important to them, then a summer tour with Chris won't nullify that. Take courage, BN fans - it's all good!

I like the idea that we can have it all...I think it is amazing that we get to see the Fab 5 line up that hasn't been around for 17 years! Like Christine or not, she is a huge part of Fleetwood Mac and their history....those shows are going to be special and they don't necessarily have to change the dynamics that greatly.
After seeing how great Stevie and Linds are getting along...I could see them going on as BN in the future and maybe doing a tour or several tours together. This could be it for Fleetwood Mac if its going to be a farewell tour, but all Lindsey wants to do is play and make music and Stevie has said she's going to be singing Rhiannon when she's 80.
BINGO! I totally agree. I think we're getting a tour a la The Dance with some new songs from each of them (hopefully Miss Nicks doesn't open the vault but writes something new) and than they'll call it a day. I think Lindsey will either continue solo or him & Stevie will do the BN cd release and tour behind that.
As for Chris coming back, I think it's awesome. I went to 3 shows during the SYW tour and didn't really miss her but when she did the 2 London shows 10 years later with only one song I realized I did miss her. It's the musical chemistry between the 5 of them that makes them so special. Not to mention the harmonies between Stevie, Lindsey and Chris. And Chris brings a lighter note to the show with her songs; Lindsey is kinda dark and edgy, Stevie has the gypsy, gold dust woman, Rhiannon thing going on and than there's Chris singing about you make loving fun and I wanna be with you everywhere. Love it. Plus I've only seen them once back in 1980 (Tusk tour). They didn't come back until 1988 but than Lindsey had left and they didn't tour Europe for The Dance. So for me it'll be a thrilling experience to see all of them back together again.
Welcome back, Christine :woohoo: :wavey:

...This band isn't going to get any more interesting just because Christine is coming back. And that's not a shot at her. I respect her and she wrote some terrific songs in her day.
I wasn't crazy about "Temporary One" or the stuff from "Time." I bet if there is a new album, the stuff won't be much better. I hope she proves me wrong.
If there is no new album, then it's just another nostalgia tour, except they will now be able to add four or five Christine songs. Whopeee!
Agreed. Even with a new album, it's a fantasy Chris will make a huge difference to the current FM sound except what she can add to their vocal blend. No, the back up singers aren't going anywhere. They're still needed with or without her. She's a 70 year old woman! Her voice can't be much better than Stevie's or Lindsey's when stretched across a full set and a long tour. She hasn't done an album in nearly a decade and only performed live a couple of times in very brief appearances since 1998. All the people who expect her to be the savoir for this "stale act" masquerading as FM the past 15 years...
This is the best post I've seen in weeks! I love the enthusiasm...seems like everyone is in a tizzy and we don't even really know what is going on yet! I like the idea that we can have it all...
Okay, I WANT IT ALL! :woohoo:

I don't think this is gonna be the finale tour. I think they're gonna go out for a summer/fall tour, let Christine get back into the swing of things, drop some new material in either EP or LP format and then do a big worldwide type finale thing. You know Mick, he's going to want to pimp it out to the max to get as much profit and publicity as he can, as it's most certainly going to be billed as a goodbye tour, no doubt about that either. So we'll definitely see when they come around to announcing either "Fleetwood Mac Live" or something about a finale.

I really don't see them touting it as a "goodbye" tour. I know that's a way to make money, but I think they'll save that promotion for 2017 or so. I don't expect them to say that this year or next.

Me, too, & this is why I'm excited that Christine is back because now I'll finally get to see the five of them together next year somehow, somewhere, someway! :blob1::blob1:

I don't this is a farewell tour, i do think that there are a few reasons why Christine has returned:
1. She missed it going on that stage in London got her back in the mode.
2. She has written new material she is passionate about seeing the light of day
3. The John health scare brought the band closer than ever
4. She's bored
I think we will get a decent sized summer tour, but I doubt she is coming back for just that, she probably wants an album. So we may just get a few tours out of her yet :)
Plus, you all don't really think the band would forget the 40th anniversary of the Rumours lineup falls in 2015 (which would be perfect to milk a new album/tour/possible farewell).

Yeah, and maybe we'll get another reissue of Rumours and they'll tour performing most of the songs live!

 my feelings exactly.
On the unleashed tour I won one of the charity auctions on Ebay and I paid just slightly above face value for tickets to Ottawa. It was like 10-15 dollars more if I remember correctly. I could see the tickets being 180- 200 dollars but maybe they won't get greedy and keep them under 170.00.
Micks tickets may go for 600.00 and upwards.

Honestly I don't give two sh*ts about Buckingham Nicks, the album. I've always thought it was it mediocre. The only stand out track for me was "Stephanie" which Lindsey already did live, the only thing missing was Stevie twirling in the background. Its been done.
If I had to go to a show filled with songs like "Without You," I would be devastated. I mean it was ok, but nothing mind blowing. Those Buckingham Nicks songs were never my cup of tea, I always wondered why it was so coveted.
I was actually hoping for more solo work. In Your Dreams, Seeds We Sow, Gift of Screws, these were albums and tours that made me excited. Fleetwood Mac just seems to be a rehash these days. Although, I will say they seemed much happier this year than at Unleashed.
My worry about Christine's return is a rehash of the Dance. I never need to hear "Over My Head" ever again....however if they kick into something like Isn't it Midnight, I'll freak.

I understand it not being your thing, but the Buckingham Nicks album is not filled with songs like "Without You". In fact, from a musical perspective, "Stephanie" is actually the closest thing to "Without You" on the album. I just find that ironic. I would imagine a Buckingham Nicks show would not consist of a solely acoustic set. "Frozen Love", "Crying in the Night", "Don't Let Me Down Again"....
To each his own. :)

You mean the chords? I'm not musically trained, I wouldn't know. You're right, to each his own, as far as FM goes, ya they need to reach into different territory. The remaining deep cuts on the first three LPs (Rumours lineup) aren't exactly thrillers (Blue Letter and That's Enough for Me would make me gitty). Unless they're willing to hit Mirage, Tango, and SYW with more depth, there's really nothing I'm interested in for them to explore onstage unless that was new music.
However, when the 5 fireflies come together, magic has always been made. Maybe Chris is the missing piece to the formula to make that amazing sound again.
Did you hear the version of DLMDA from the 2004 opening night?

I just meant they are both acoustic songs. The only other song on Buckingham Nicks that falls into that category is "Django", but it's more of a Spanish flamenco type thing so I wouldn't compare it to "Stephanie" or "Without You", again I was just going by the music obviously since there are no lyrics. The only song lyrically I would compare to "Without You" is "Crystal".
I've heard the boots of DLMDA from 2004. Did you not like that?

BN is an okay album, just like "Penguin" (specifically Christine's material) was an okay album. Good, but nowhere near what they were together.

The part where she's the savior of the "stale act" is the fact that the ENTIRE SHOW won't be about Stevie and Lindsey now. Having her lead vocal and having her songs will be a MAJOR difference.

ABSOLUTELY. I am heartily fed up of the approach taken these past ten or so years, where the focus has been on Stevie and Lindsey and there has been no real feel of it being the Fleetwood Mac I fell in love with. It was, as has been said a lot, often as though it was BN with a very good rhythm section, and that's OK. The band I loved was a fivesome which balanced itself out, and I can't wait to hear and see it again.
To BN fans, I say that the chance has been there since 2003 for them to get their act together and sort that old project out. I just don't see that there was the will to do it, but they still could do something, whatever it might be; I just don't much care, for myself. I like Lindsey and Stevie, but I have had too much of them by themselves of late.

I think that on most of the Stevie or Lindsey songs they did live from 03-13 from the Rumours-Mirage era they just about got away with it being a fair (if matured) representation of the Mac from that period for 2/3 of their live show from way back. Sure, I wanted to be able to hear Chris on backing vocals for Rhiannon, the Chain, Beatiful Child and the like, and to have heard her working away on the keys for GYOW and GDW would have been great, but it wasn't to be. I also really enjoyed SYW, although a careful pruning of 4 or 5 songs might not have hurt too much. It was different, but still the Mac and that's what I love about this band- hell, I spend too much of my time listening to a 10 hour playlist of 155 songs from every album and iteration they've ever produced from 1967.
It was still fine, if not great when Stevie took over her parts on the only two Chris songs they performed on each of the three tours. I might be alone in this, but I quite enjoyed the playfulness of SYLM when they did it in 09.
So they've always dealt with loss right from 1970, sometimes better than others, and for a variety of reasons. I'm ecstatic that Chris, at 70(!) wants to do this again and having her extra dimension again will be fantastic. What a way to go out if this lineup can hold together until at least the 50th anniversary in 2017.
