This song is underrated! I think Lindsey's part at the end really makes the song.

Yes, Lindsey's vocal proves there is a good sing hiding in WISYA. I love his part.

However, the moment Stevie starts wheezing out "WHASSAMATTAHBAYBEHHHHH!?" I just really can't cope. I need to pretend Lindsey sings the entire thing. Her worst vocal ever.

If this was introduced into a live set, either with Stevie on lead or as a true duet with Lindsey, I'd probably enjoy it very much.

Isn't this the song Stevie tricked him into singing on and after his vocal was finished she snuck back in the studio and removed all the vocals on the end of the song but his...

This song is the ultimate Garbage Stevie Song.

Never deserved a demo. Shouldn't have been on an album.

It will forever be grist for all those who think she is a terrible songwriter. It was her at her worst vocally and as a writer. The Bottom Of The Barrel.

I find WTTRS perfectly likeable. I think it'd get a lot less flack if it had been a filler song on TOSOTM. On TITN, as one of only two new Stevie-penned songs and the first we'd heard from her in 3 years, it's a pretty sorry choice, though.

Loved this song at first listen. It is the unbelievably raw emotion that works .... the broken voice and the fragments of images and meanings in the lyrics. Stevie sounds drained and exhausted and worn out from crying, and uttering the last bits and pieces of feeling that she can. To me it is a weird masterpiece from start to finish. But I am always attracted first to slow, maudlin, weepy, incoherent Stevie.

I've heard your take on this song before, and I love it. I wish I shared it. I get none of the emotion from this song. It just sounds to me like she wasn't really sure how to sing a song of this nature at that point in her "voice changing" (for lack of a better term). There are many occasions where she emotes a lyric beautifully and I am totally with her on it, even if it isn't technically perfect. This song is no such occasion, for me.

She dropped the ball on tango in the night and she knows it. Christine songs and Lindsay songs are stellar and hers are by far the weakest. After Rumours, Tango in the Night is Fleetwood Mac's most popular album worldwide.

I will say that her vocals on the album were stellar, especially for Seven Wonders. But the two songs she wrote for the album were the pooh. That is permanent. No matter how many excuses she gives that album will live on with her being the weakest writer on it by far.

yes. POOH. Or some other word that means pooh, only meaner.

Seven Wonders was not even written by Stevie.

I guess we can give her a break though. If she had stayed on the coke she would be dead going on 25 years now.

Sad but true. Usually when an artist underperforms, that work fades into obscurity relatively quickly. But with TITN some of the worst work in her career is stuck on a widely popular and celebrated album. So many are exposed to it who are unlikely to be very forgiving. And on a repeat basis. Eesh.

In fairness, there's other schlock on that album which takes the heat off Stevie a bit. Unlike Rumours, Tango has a number of weak songs. Almost half the album actually isn't really particularly good.

To me it is a weird masterpiece from start to finish.

I feel the same way. I've professed my love for "When I See You Again" many times here in the past. The lyrics and Stevie's vocal convey such despondency and helplessness -- it's heartbreakingly beautiful.

It's never going to be everyone's favorite, and I completely understand why, but I'm so happy it exists. I also think it gives 'Tango' an emotional gravitas that it otherwise lacks.

Yeah, it is the Stevie that you either get or not. Not everybody's taste. Frankly, I wish she had done more like WISYA. It is, to tell the truth, what brought me back to Stevie after a bit of a break when her solo work was just not working for me.

When I see You again is by far her worst Fleetwood Mac performance and should not have made it to the album, it baffles my brain when I hear the talk of leaving Silver Springs off Rumours but allowing something like this to make it to print makes no sense in that context. That said, when I think of the atmosphere and what she was trying to write, I can see potential in the concept but at the time, she could neither write, nor sing to the standard the song would have called for. Had she drawn on some of the lyrics from the chain demo, maybe it could've worked somehow.

Her vocal on this song is excellent, but this song is bland and boring and never belonged on a Fleetwood Mac. As far as it being her worst song, she recorded more bad songs like Freedom, Paper Doll, No Questions Asked and The Second Time.

No Questons Asked and Paper Doll were on Best of Fleetwood Mac albums and that is a tragedy. However, she also put the putrid, god-awful Desert Angel and Loves a Hard Game to Play on a Best of Stevie Nicks album.

Sometimes she is not dealing with a full deck. Best of albums are important because they sale for the long run and she should not put bad songs on them.

Haha. I genuinely enjoy every single song you named. Except for Loves a Hard Game to Play, of course. But I don't deny Stevie isn't always the best judge of her own content. Affairs of the Heart is the only 90s-Mac-Stevie song that I really don't like.

Can they add touched by an angel to this list?

Inspiration and Docklands are good songs. However Stevie's vocal on Docklands is god awful. She hacks the song. Inspiration was one of the only few real songs from Street Angel but she didn't put it on the album because she didn't write it.

On the other hand, Mirror Mirror is not a good song but her vocal is excellent. It is one of the best vocals of her career.

I probably add Can't Fix This to the collection due to the overdrivin Rock guitar in it which ruined it for my taste. The lyrics are great .Sorry guys.I just want to hear Stevie's voice not the noise.

I was incredibly moved when I first heard "When I See You Again" back in time, when TITN was released, knowing Stevie had just pulled herself up, basically from hell, while recording and touring behind "Rock A Little" - in that context, at that time, the song and Stevie's delivery were touching. Yes, it's far from my favorite Stevie composition, but it's not dreck! This song was brave, in that it is probably the rawest thing Stevie ever recorded within Fleetwood Mac and gives TITN much needed emotional sobriety amongt all the 80s fairlight production frivolity. Like a slow funeral procession, this song crawls along befitting a song about reflection and regrets. Stevie vocal on this also reminds me of her stunning delivery on her great RAL outtake "She Loves Him Still." Heartbreaking.

I agree that the emotion on WISYA is compelling. The vocal... not her worst. But the lyrics! How many times can you say the same word over and over in a row?

And the dream says I want you
And the dream is gone
So she stays up nights on end
Well at least there is a dream left

WTF? Lazy. Drug-induced. Whichever. Bad. And yes, I *would* say that to Bob Dylan. Love her to death, but Lindsey's playing and vocal at the end salvage this. Good idea but it took a wrong turn somewhere and never found its way back.

"When I See You Again" makes me tear up a little, but I do agree that it's undercooked. The vocal is sometimes okay, but it other times it doesn't compensate for the lyrics well (the infamous "wassamatterbaby"). I couldn't ever really get behind "stare at the stairs" either though I see what she was going for. But there are some really heartbreaking aspects to the song, always for me that line about there being at least one dream left, it just gets me in the old ticker.

I think the appeal of the song for me is a little too meta to chalk it up to the song's inherent merit, but I still listen to it. Even though "Seven Wonders" is more polished, WISYA and "Welcome to the Room Sara" are deeper songs (even though I don't like the latter much at all).

Man, I wish there could be some equal time on this board and I could see a thread where someone else's songs could be ripped apart and exposed for the emotionless, light and trite songs they are. Not mentioning any names here, but I'm sure she'd be over her head everywhere when daddy says he loves her. You want to talk about repetition? Write down the words to "Little Lies" and then just look at the paper. Can't say that, though, because she's beyond human and does no wrong. She's so Perfect.

Regardless of any production considerations, at least Stevie's songs (and Lindsey's), the songs themselves, not the production, convey honest emotion and have something to say and contain so many levels.

You're spot on! Even though I now miss Chris (I didn't when SYW was released) and will be happy to see her rejoin FM to lighten up the band with her hallmark-y pop sensibilities and bring that missing ingredient back into the fold. It's fair to say that Christine does not color outside the lines, and very rarely illicits the emotional gravitas and soul bearing that comes naturally to Stevie's writing - which sometimes makes Stevie an easy target. But it's also why we are still here talking about her, why she intensely connects to her listeners & has such a strong fanbase.

I would like it if it were actually a cover of the original; but...I find Stevie's lyrical arrangement lacking. With that polka-esqe carnival merry-go-round instrumentation, though, it was dead on arrival.
It took me years to appreaciate this cover. At 20 yrs old, it was a definite WTF moment. But years later, I get it. No doubt, this cover was a light-hearted attempt to end such a dark, dark record. To bring some levity to the woeful contemplation of Stevie's rock star fame musings of post drug treatment & pre mid-life crisis. And the quirky circus-waltz treatment perfectly serves as sorta this wierd Willy Wonka counterpoint to her "Alice in Wonderland" theme. It works.

"When I See You Again" makes me tear up a little, but I do agree that it's undercooked. To this day, I think that line was a lyric sheet misprint. In my mind, she meant "And she stares (back) at the stares" - the fans & media gawking at her. Which undoubtabley felt like such an intrusion at one of her darkest hours.

No offense but you have to be kidding. For years people were tearing Lindsey and Christine apart in favor of Stevie. Her songs win all the polls and she is the one who is celebrated. Hell, when one of Stevie's song doesn't work, it's because Lindsey didn't produce it right.

I love this, because one of the common and obvious criticisms of WISYA is the repetition of "What's the matter baby" six times serving as a chorus. How lazy! How uninspired! But then on the other hand, "Hold Me" is a fan favorite.

But I think Hold Me is sung with a big more variety, long, frantic, a plea, a demand, music ascending and descending. If it were just "hold me, hold me, hold me" in a monotone, it would be dull, but hearing the same words go through so many different moods, just shows me how much power two syllables can have.

No. No. No. No. And no.

Okay. I'll take the bait.

I have a few dozen friends who think I am a total jackass to place Stevie as one of the greatest songwriters of the last three decades. And they are serious songwriting snobs. So much so that they even track down every song they can use to disprove me. This is always the number one dagger tossed at me. They are people who toss arcane songwriters at me I have never even heard of.

This is her Achilles heel of a song. The melody doesn't go anywhere. The vocal is lazy. But perhaps all she was capable of at that moment. I will get back to that later.

The only redeeming quality of it is when Lindsey comes in. Then it becomes something like a dialogue. The mythology of the song, according to Stevie, is that she snuck into the studio and stripped her vocals off to end it with Lindsey's harmony. And that is where the song kind of comes life. If there is any proof of Lindsey crafting her songs into something, this is the proof. Because without him, this song is simply an unfinished fragment. A song that might have been. He saves it from being utterly nothing to a bit of a roman a clef - (novel about real life, overlaid with a façade of fiction).

It is a shipper's paradise, this song.

Until Lindsey comes in, this is a crushed, croaking, barely hanging onto life Stevie. I get it. There is a part of the Stevie mythology that hinges on her being a broken and helpless waif. Her whole image is rooted in that rising from the ashes BS.

The problem is it is a BAD SONG. Poorly structured, throwaway lyrics and only the skeleton of a melody. We all know it was a sad scrap she deigned to toss at the session and she relied on Lindsey to save it. For God's sake he could have pulled Smile At You for the record. That was a great song. The gutted and soul free SYW version notwithstanding.

It is kind of cute and sweet (hahahahah) that Lindsey saved it from utter oblivion with his harmony, and that Stevie had the good sense to strip it to his vocal at the end. But no one, save a die hard Stevie fan, in my experience, has ever found this song to be anything but a throwaway embarrassment. In the final analysis, I suspect he used this song for one reason and one reason alone - to show that she was sometimes a crappy songwriter who couldn't function without him. I think his agreement to use of this song was deliberate. Just to make her look bad. The reviews of the time tossed a ton of shade on this song. A Michael K Dlisted level of shade. And deservedly so.

Whenever I hear anyone glorify this shoddy offering, that was so clearly given to the band by Stevie when she was at the absolute bottom of her songwriting abilities, and perhaps the worst period of her life, I wonder why those people would want to celebrate her weakness. Not only her weakness as a songwriter, but her weakness as a person.

I think it is telling. Not of her, but of those who like it.

There is a certain value in writing about ourselves and even talking about ourselves when we are in the depths of despair. That can make for great art. When it is considered. I think this song is an example of her being so far in the depths of destruction that her writing skills utterly left her. She couldn't even tell if her output was good or bad. And this was BAD. It is like looking at, and wanting to see, pictures of a brilliant artist puking in a gutter. She has no perspective. No sense of quality. It is damned near emotional pornography. I expect and expected better from her as an artist.

This song, to me, is a mess. An undisciplined, throwaway half assed piece of junk. Whenever I hear someone praise it, all I can think of is this - that person somehow glorifies, and for some reason, wallows in weakness and damage and feels strength in romanticizing swimming in their own helplessness. And by that token, thinks Stevie is somehow heroic for being at the absolute bottom of her journey on earth. This song says nothing about surviving the worst or getting out. And above and beyond cute...Lindsey SAVED HER...as she was simply so weak and so helpless that the hero once again rescues the weak helpless damsel with his genius. She was simply not capable of anything else.

I don't get it. I may have when I was 15. Or 17. But as an adult, I do not see any value in making love to your own grief. And that is all this song is.

I don't like the song because it is a weak song. Anyone could of wrote it. Nothing special about it. HOLD ME is a good song. They are not even on the same playing field. To compare those songs is an insult to Christine McVie.

I know. I mean it's not the repetition of words that kills When I See You Again, it's the droning, stupid quality. Wild Heart has a lot of repetition, but Stevie's vocal soars and it doesn't matter how many wild, wild, wild, wild, wilds she throws in, it's thrilling, pulsing with both emotion and her artistry as a singer.

I will add that Hold me is an amazing song, lyrically, sonically, tonally, rhythmically, etc etc. It is a Perfect POP song that starts somewhere, goes somewhere, leaves you wanting more. etc etc.

I think the Demo version of Hold Me lacks the repeats of Hold Me, hold me, HOLD MEE. HHHHEEEEE. Instead it goes something like "So hold me, hold me hold me like a good man could. Hold me Hold me Hold like a good man SHOULD".

Yes. If lyrical repetition alone was something someone disliked in songwriting, they wouldn't be a fan of Fleetwood Mac at all, or popular music in general for that matter, and they wouldn't be posting here. That's not what's being criticised in WISYA. Monotony would be a much better word for it. Or, as Michele said, "stupid". ;) This comparison with well-crafted Christine McVie songs is moot. Those songs are trying to accomplish something completely different in the first place. And I'm not a Christine McVie apologist by any means. She's my least favourite of the three by a mile.

Put it this way, if a friend asks you to make an into-to-Stevie playlist to get their feet wet on her body of work, is WISYA ever a song you'd even dream of including in a million years?

For me, it's quite the contrary. I don't glorify or romanticize weakness (anyone who knows me can tell you I hate self-pity) -- I simply think it's important to recognize where we've been, in order to travel the road ahead. Strength comes from admitting our failings and then dusting ourselves off and moving forward.

This song, unto itself, may not say anything about surviving the worst, but it's an important one in the narrative course of her work. Songs since have told the "survivor" story. While "When I See You Again" illustrates the nadir of her existence -- when she was desperate, vulnerable, lonely, gutted.

Additionally, I don't see Lindsey's contribution at the end of the song, as him saving her (figuratively or literally). He represents the voice of a lost-love and the relationship she needs to make peace with.

I sometimes wonder if the MAC fans that hear these songs for the first time when orginally released vs. later in the years have an effect on their opinions. When Tango came out in '87 I was blown away with all the tracks.

I bought TITN the day it was released. I loved 7 Wonders from the get go and hated the other 2 songs of Stevie's. I spent many a time mimicking Stevie singing WTTRS. I always felt that Lindsey allowed these songs to go out to the world to punish Stevie. All these years later I actually like all 3 songs though I haven't listened to any of them in years.

"When I See You Again" is the ONLY (I repeat, the ONLY) Stevie-penned Fleetwood Mac song that I cannot abide. I hate everything about it - shoddy vocal, shoddy lyrics. She really didn't care much for Fleetwood Mac in 1987 and it shows. The other songs mentioned - "No Questions Asked", "Paper Doll" and her BTM songs, I love all of them. "Freedom" is just fantastic, and I will never grasp how anyone could think it belongs in the same catagory as WISYA.

There really aren't many Stevie songs I don't like, in all honesty. Here's my list:

When I See You Again
Docklands (WHAT!? Stevie Nicks does NOT go to the laundromatt!!)
Jane
Just Like A Woman (nothing against the song, just a very boring cover)
I Still Miss Someone
Fire Burning
The Nightmare
Cheaper Than Free

And that's it. Everything else, I like and listen to regularly.

[B][CENTER]Ghost Through The Fog: The Worst of Stevie Nicks

Love Is Like A River
Paper Doll
Street Angel
Freedom
Mirror Mirror
Inspiration
Desert Angel (Operation Desert Shield Dance Mix)

I couldn't disagree more with these choices. "Love Is Like A River" is a highlight for me from SA. "Mirror Mirror" and "Inspiration" should have been included on RAL and SA respectively.

Where is "I Still Miss Someone" and "Unconditional Love"? Those are worse than anything on this list.

WISYA, Somebody Stand By Me, and possible Jane are my only disagreements with this list. I would put Rooms on Fire, Bella Donna, and Enchanted there instead.

Get outa here!

"Jane" is the worst song she ever wrote. RoF, BD and Enchanted are classic, Stevie wonderfulness.

Agreed on the roasting of anyone who thinks "Bella Donna" is one of her worst songs. I mean, really. It's epic, gorgeous, emotive, langorous, soulful and deservedly the title track of her best album.

As for WISYA, well...errm. It's not her best. And it's not one I'd ever put on a sampler for anyone. It's the kind of wallowing that Tori Amos has made a career of (and I like Tori Amos). It has its place -- I will occasionally listen to it now -- and I think my initial dislike of it had to do with how embarrassed I was at how "on her sleeve" her heart was in creating it and how I knew the world would react to it. I think I was approaching it with a whole "what will everyone else think of her now" attitude and cringing. It's a sad, sad, song reflecting on her state of dissaray, so it could probably not have been much better than it is. But yes, I wish for her sake, it were "hidden" on a much less successful album.

Bella Donna is one of my favourite things on the entire planet.

It pretty much goes:

Oxygen
Bella Donna
Sex

But I kind of like the notion that a fellow Stevie fan could dislike that song. It just shows how varied our musical perspectives are. We're obviously getting completely different things out of her music generally, yet we're both fans. It's kinda beautiful.

I need to rush to the defence of Docklands, now. It's a cover of a Betsy Cook original off the superb The Girl Who Ate Herself which is an album I will defend to the death (and also features Love is the Grove, made famous by Cher a few years later). ;) Her vocal on the album track doesn't do the writing justice, but it's not terrible. It's not worse than anything else on Street Angel, and I actually really like the live performances from that tour. I don't get why the "Laundromat" line bugs people so much. Clearly it is a character-song, not a biographical one. I guess Stevie fans may be too used to the latter and find the contrast jarring, but I like her mixing it up a little every now and then and singing a work of fiction. I wish she'd do it more.

I don't hate Docklands nearly as much as most people do. As far as bad Stevie songs go, it is kind of low hanging fruit. Somewhere I have a tape bootleg of her singing a demo of it that is far superior to the SA track. It was much darker and I remember liking it. Granted I got it during the pre SA release lull and was desperate for anything I could hear, and it was a lame cassette tape, but at the time I was intrigued. There is also a radio commercial on that tape touting Unconditional Love as the lead single. I remember them using the phrase "sonic perfection" in that ad. HA. Talk about hype!

I actually adore "When I See You Again". That said, I do understand why it seems to be universally reviled - there's no discernible tune, the lyrics aren't among her best and the vocal is ragged - but somehow, I can see beyond these shortcomings.
The rawness of Stevie's vocal actually moves me and to be honest, there wasn't anything else on the Tango In The Night album that elicited such a response. Whilst there are some undeniably fine pop moments on that album, there is a pervading slickness that I couldn't engage with and ultimately reacted against. From my perspective, "When I See You Again" is the blood and guts of an otherwise soulless, synthetic confection.
What does it say about me that I respond to such an overwrought delivery from Miss Nicks? I'd better hand that one over to you Sparky... :)

I fully agree that WISYA elicits an emotional response, it is like a piece of abstract art, in that way. And to me, the vocals are not flat and droning, they actually float and hover. Lindsey's production of the song really ads to the mystique.

On a different but related note, I have always found Bella Donna to be a case of wasted potential, it could have soared and inspired but what we got was a dull and leaden and aimless tune, cursed with junky production/arrangement that only served to make the lyrics seem annoying and brought out the harsh flat aspect of Stevie's vocals. After the wonders of Stevie's work with FM on three albums, this song (and the accompanying album) was a huge letdown. Mundane, cheaply produced, self indulgent yet half formed. A good producer could have taken it and built a thing of beauty but, well, oh dear....

It works.

You always have such a positive, uplifting outlook . It's refreshing.

To this day, I think that line was a lyric sheet misprint. In my mind, she meant "And she stares (back) at the stares" - the fans & media gawking at her. Which undoubtabley felt like such an intrusion at one of her darkest hours.

That makes sense. I've always thought it was meant to be a reference to the stairs in Blue Lamp, to the upstairs in Welcome To The Room...Sara, the stairs in Sisters of the Moon, and a way of describing the feeling one has when leaving a place where many memories are being left behind. But - your idea makes far more sense, especially in the context of the line preceding it.

But I think Hold Me is sung with a big more variety, long, frantic, a plea, a demand, music ascending and descending. If it were just "hold me, hold me, hold me" in a monotone, it would be dull, but hearing the same words go through so many different moods, just shows me how much power two syllables can have.

No, no no. There is nothing monotone about the chorus of When I See You Again. I'd even venture to say that neither of you are actually *listening* to the song. The lyric is repeated, yes, but it is sad, then it's lonely, then exasperated, then it is fearful and wounded and finally a desperate expression of grief. There is nothing monotone about it.

Hm. Well I'm willing to entertain the idea that I just find the goblin-on-helium vocals so off-putting that I miss any emotional nuance. I'd still suggest, though, that fans of this song are simply allowing their fandom and knowledge of Stevie's backstory to prompt them into "hearing" things that just aren't there in the performance. Stalemate? I'm not really sure how much more we can throw adjectives around before it all just comes back to "I do/don't get anything out of this and am (/not) enjoying this listening experience". You could very well be right in a lot of cases, but I'd like to add that I was a brand new fan when 'Tango' was released ('Rock A Little' having been the first Stevie album I owned).

I was 14 at the time (15 later in the year), and knew next to nothing about Stevie's back-story. There was no internet to read everything ever written about her, and then-current magazines weren't saying very much about her at the time.

I fell in love with "When I See You Again" solely based on Stevie's vocals and the lyrics (which I'm not saying are among her best, but that I do believe effectively express despondency and ennui).

From my perspective, "When I See You Again" is the blood and guts of an otherwise soulless, synthetic confection.

Phil, in all the years that I have railed against this song, and I have done it many times, no one has ever framed their admiration of it this way. So kudos to you. I am not sure I can say that TITN is utterly without soul, but maybe most of it is. It is certainly suspended in the amber of 80's synths and slickness. There isn't much timeless about most of it. The craft of it stands out the most, and by now much of it sounds somewhat dated. I can see how WISYA stands out against all of that. That alone is one reason I can understand why people like it. It is not as sanitized and processed as the rest of the record.

What does it say about me that I respond to such an overwrought delivery from Miss Nicks? I'd better hand that one over to you Sparky... :)

LOL. Well, it is pretty obvious that anyone who loves Stevie responds to drama. There are few singers or writers in history who can convey such emotion with their lyrics and singing. Stevie does blood and guts as well or better than anyone. There is a reason I have been in the front row dozens of times, a grown man bawling his eyes out as she sings.

IDK what it necessarily says about you. I can tell you that from my perspective, I am a structure and control freak. Songs like Storms, or BATB, which are well written, have a sense of logic to them, and follow fairly strict storytelling rules, tend to move me the most. In those frameworks, the blood and guts vocals and lyrics can leave me in a puddle on the floor. If the same kind of vocal and lyric is there in a song that doesn't provide me with structural and musical resolution, my emotions do not get as engaged.

For example, I think Mirror Mirror has some devastating vocals, and some pretty good lyrics, but it comes off unfinished as a piece. So it doesn't really rank for me. It is a bunch of roller coasting foreplay with no orgasm. It never resolves. I am also stunningly judgmental and opinionated (alert the presses), so lack of what I consider to be good writing tosses me out of the experience of the song completely. I am also a writer so that doesn't help either. Having a bit of musical training doesn't help. I need things to resolve musically.

What your love of the song maybe says about you is that you are person who responds to music, and perhaps all art, on a more visceral level. Without all the filters and qualifiers a person like myself has. I mean, from my perspective I call that quality control. HAHAHAHA. One the great things about art and music is that it they both hit everyone in a different way.

I have had friends who are such technicians as singers that they utterly dismissed Stevie as an artist because of her lack of classical technique and delivery. I won a few over eventually, but many of them only respond to opera singers or people who have instruments like Ronstadt or Yearwood. Some even find emotion in something as soulless as Celine Dion. They can't abide a lack of clarity or control - it literally disengages their emotional response. We are all different in how we respond. It is often a matter of training and education. It could be brain chemistry for all I know.

One of the most wondrous things about Stevie is the response she gets out of such a wide range of people. I see that as one of her greatest gifts. Something about her voice and writing has a very broad appeal. She is a visceral kind of artist. She evokes a very powerful response.

I don't love everything she does. There is a long list of crap in her vast catalogue IMO. But when she is great, there is no one who touches me and moves with music like she can. I am the kind of guy who likes things as disparate as Shakespeare and Beavis and Butthead. However, WISYA is just a bridge too far. As my old folks used to say, there's a lid for every pot.
