Stevie Nicks on John McVie's Cancer: 'He's Gonna Be Fine'

Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie was diagnosed with cancer back in October, but in a new interview with Us Weekly, Stevie Nicks says her longtime bandmate is "gonna be fine."
"He's good," Nicks says of McVie. "He's got his treatment, and now he did a show on the 30th and 31st, another tomorrow night, then he has surgery next week. . . I'm not the least bit worried about John. He's very, very strong and a man of very few words. He's not a person to mess with."
Ever since McVie's diagnosis, Nicks has been vocally optimistic – even mystical – about the bassist's condition. "If I ever had any psychic knowledge about me in this body, I am telling you that John McVie is gonna be just fine," Nicks told ABC News Radio in December. "He's gonna have a little operation. He'll probably take a couple weeks to recover, and then sky's the limit!"
After canceling 14 tour dates due to McVie's cancer treatment, the bassist joined his Fleetwood Mac bandmates for their New Year's shows in Las Vegas. The December 30th show was especially eventful, with Nicks dedicating her classic ballad "Landslide" to attendees Katy Perry and John Mayer.
"I have been friends with John Mayer for a long time," Nicks told Us Weekly. "I think John Mayer is one of the finest songwriters ever. He is right up there with James Taylor, Don Henley and those people. I really love him and respect him for those beautiful songs. So I just saw them (Mayer and Perry) on December 30th in Vegas, and that's where I dedicated 'Landslide' to them. They seem to be a really great couple, and they seem to really care about each other. I am just hoping for the best for them. . . I always love to dedicate 'Landslide' to people I know really get it and appreciate it. Because it doesn't go out to anybody."

Furthers the point. Tusk is superior. :D
But seriously, the past several years Stevie has been all about name dropping whomever is the biggest pop fluff star of the moment. Lindsey name drops his fav current artists & influences as well, but his at least have some genuine artistic merit. :p

It doesn't say anything. "Rumours" would have been an amazing album if it only sold 50,000 copies.

If the Eagles' sales don't give them credibility, how about winning Grammys and in the case of Henley/Frey, being inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame?
Even if Don Henley's not your favorite person, he's achieved a lot of critical recognition as a major songwriting talent. It's not just sales.
I like John Mayer too, but I don't think he's in the same league as Don Henley.
Good to hear Stevie being so positive about John. Best wishes and prayers for his surgery.

You got this room for two
One thing I've left to do
Discover me

And if you want love

Take all your big plans

Halls of Fame and Grammys primarily measure success, which is based on popularity. Popularity is not a measure of quality. It simply can't be, and it's why in other realms, brilliant artists are often recognized after they die.
Don Henley may be a decent songwriter, but he's not a Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen. Hell, he's not even a Stevie Nicks!

John Mayer has some quality songs. Slow Dancing In A Burning Room, Why Georgia, Gravity, Daughters... His first album Room For Squares and his album Continuum are pretty solid and great, IMO. He's put out some crap, too, but... Are we really trying to pretend that Stevie (or Lindsey, for that matter) has never written/put out bad music herself?

That is a good point. All songwriters write some not-so-great songs - its only natural. Some of Stevie's lyrics don't look that great written down, but when they are put to music they seem much better. I haven't listened to John Mayer's music, so I won't judge him on the above song. The lyrics of it did tickle me for some reason...

Even Lindsey has praised John Mayer ...and how many things do he and Stevie agree on???
There's a clip somewhere of LB at the Grammy's a few years back with Kristen-- I think this was where she had her hair up in a sort of braided style-- and they asked him who he was rooting for to win that night and he said that being a fellow guitar player he of course was rooting for John Mayer.

I don't like John Mayer. He's too soft and too bland.
I don't like Katy Perry or her brand of bland, soul-less synthesized modern pop fluff.
I like Don Henley's tastes, but I really hate his music. If I never hear "Boys Of Summer," "Desperado," or "Hotel California" ever again, I would be the luckiest man in the world. What REALLY chaps my bum, though, is that the Eagles did "Seven Bridges Road" and said that they learned it from Steve Young. HOWEVER, the version they did was note-for-note the same version as Ian Matthews 1974 version, which was arranged by Michael Nesmith.
Steve Young's 1969 version

January 10, 2014 3:15 PM ET Hanging Out at Stevie Nicks' House
We recently visited the Los Angeles home of rock goddess Stevie Nicks, and while we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a dedicated shawl closet and a tambourine vault, we can report that the kitchen TV was tuned to HGTV and the chandelier was fabulous. That house is featured throughout In Your Dreams, the entertaining film documenting the recording of Nicks' underrated 2011 solo album of the same name. Album producer Dave Stewart (of the Eurythmics) is also a compulsive videographer; he and Nicks are named as codirectors, although she dismissed the credit, saying, "It was very nice of them, but I didn't direct this." The documentary, recently released on DVD, was spurred by Dave Grohl: when Nicks lamented to him that her album had died, he told her that the only way to revive it was to release a film. "Go home and call Dave Stewart right now," he instructed her.
Nicks, who is still just like the white-winged dove, was holding court in the front stairwell of her house, in the same location where she and backup singers Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks recorded all their vocals for In Your Dreams. "This was the house where we had more fun than we've ever had in our whole lives," she said. "It was like amazing summer camp that lasted all year for adults — who got to be children for a year, with no adults around to tell us what to do." Performers on the album included guitarists Waddy Wachtel, Mike Campbell, and Lindsey Buckingham (Nicks' Fleetwood Mac bandmate and former paramour). "Even Lindsay felt like he had a big cashmere hug when he was here for a few days," Nicks reported. "He couldn't help it."
To make the album, Stewart would come over around 2 p.m.; they would then work until dinner, which was cooked by Nicks' goddaughter. "We would break for an hour, an hour and a half, and we would do what they used to in the Twenties, when they had Hemingway and Coco Chanel and Nureyev and Man Ray, and they would have dinner every Sunday night," Nicks said. "They would talk and gossip about politics and the world and people, and talk about music and photography." After dinner, Stewart would go home to his two young daughters, while Nicks and her singers would work late into the night on the next day's vocal parts.
Nicks compared Stewart to an array of Lewis Carroll characters. "Sometimes he's the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. Sometimes he's the Mad Hatter. Sometimes he's Alice. You're never quite sure who Dave is. But whoever he is, he's the master of ceremonies." And Nicks? "I'm Alice when he's not being Alice. Or I'm the Rabbit. I'm whoever character I need to be." She considered her grammar. "That was a very bad sentence. But in Alice in Wonderland's world, it would be a perfect sentence."
The film shows glimpses of some of Nicks' books of poetry, which she entrusted to Stewart, who combed through them looking for potential lyrics. Nicks explained that she writes journal entries on the right-hand page; if she feels like turning the entry into a poem, she'll write that on the accompanying left-hand page. In her youth, when she was learning to play guitar and writing her first songs, Nicks learned a lot of poetry by other people: Edgar Allan Poe, Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde. "I did memorize a lot of it in high school and in the beginning of college, because if I couldn't think of words, I would just go to the poetry book, and open it up and use their words." That was the genesis of "Annabel Lee," an In Your Dreams adaptation of the 1849 Poe poem.
Nicks discussed the most recent news in the world of Fleetwood Mac: Christine McVie's public declaration in late 2013 that she was interested in rejoining the band. "She came in for the second of two nights at the O2 Arena in London and she had a great time. She was a wreck, a nervous wreck. She hasn't been onstage since 1998. Talk about starting at the top, to walk out in the O2 Arena; I think it's 19,000 people. She was really nervous, but she was well-rehearsed," Nicks said fondly.
And in the future? "All I can say is, Chris has so nailed it into our head that she would never come back. And it's been thirteen years. And she has literally, so many times, extensively told us why she would never come back and why it was not a part of her life anymore and why she wouldn't know what to do in that situation anymore. You finally let it go — and that's when we really started on our quest to make Fleetwood Mac relevant without her. Because that was hard. We didn't really want to have Fleetwood Mac without Chris. But we finally decided that we also didn't want to not play. So I'll be interested to see, along with the rest of you, what Christine will do," Nicks said.
Nicks concluded, "When people say, 'Did she ask if she could come back?' It's her band, for God's sake. If she wants to come back, it's her band. Fleetwood Mac-Vie. She started the damn band. So wouldn't it be great? Yes, it would be. I'll believe it when I see it."

I hope people realize how FAKE the Eagles are, now. The ONLY worse bunch of fakes are Zepplin. Fleetwood Mac needs to quit being a bunch of ass kissers. Katy sucks, Mayer sucks, Henley sucks, BUT Colbie Caillat, one of their own, is actually not awful. In fact, if not for Christine coming back, I'd be begging Colbie to join the band.

Continuum is probably his best work. I was very excited when it came out. Not having really paid attention to him, I thought Continuum was a sign of things to come. Here was a great artist and very talented guitarist with something to say. Unfortunately, the work that followed just didn't live up to the promise.

Colbie is fresh and fun. She's like a surfer version of Stevie. Love her stuff. And I especially appreciate that she doesn't try to do the same thing every time. There was a song a few years back with a solo that I could swear was Lindsey playing. It wasn't, but it could have been ripped out of a number of FM songs.
I'm not sure Colbie would be a good fit for FM, but of the crop of young artists, to me she is a standout.

All joking aside, who had twelve albums without ever being dropped? Who had been on U.S. national television at least twice? Who had the road crew? Who was paying who $200 each a week? Who already had a Greatest Hits record? EVERYBODY'S bank accounts benefitted from the merger, but Fleetwood Mac was an already established band when Stevie and Lindsey joined. Lindsey and Stevie didn't save Fleetwood Mac. They were the two luckiest people in the world to walk into the ultimate situation for a recording artist: regarded enough to warrant coverage in music media, still on a major label though well under the radar enough to do whatever the hell they wanted, internally managed, had a functioning road crew, and inherited a very respectable legacy. There was only one way to go, and what got them there initially was a single by...Christine McVie.

An established band not going anywhere though. Only one way to go, but it was Stevie and Lindsey that got them there. Would Over my Head still hav e been a hit without Stevie and Lindsey on the record? She even said the song was about Lindsey so he provided the inspiration. The other way for them to go was sideways which is what they'd been doing to that point and had they just kept replacing guitarists with the next they probably would just be a somewhat obscure band from the UK from the 60s/70s.
