By now the world knows about the blossoming friendship between Katy Perry and Stevie Nicks.
Last week, during a Fleetwood Mac concert, the lead singer dedicated the band’s classic song “Landslide” to Perry and her boyfriend John Mayer, who were in the audience.
Recently Nicks opened up to ABC News Radio about first meeting the younger singer and the advice she gave her about navigating pop stardom in this day and age.
The connection between Nicks and Perry goes back to 2011, when the rock legend provided the narration for Perry’s video “The One that Got Away.” But the two only actually met for the first time this past fall, when they were both in London for performances.
Katy Perry Says Stevie Nicks Sees ‘Straight Through My Soul’
“I met her after her rehearsal at 11:30 [at the hotel],” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “I thought it was going to be a 20 minute, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ thing — and we sat for three hours until, like, three in the morning. And we pretty much talked about everything.”
What Nicks found most interesting, though, was when Perry asked her about her solo career, which started in 1981 with the release of the album Bella Donna.
“She said to me, ‘So when you did Bella Dona who were your rivals?’” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “And I was, like, speechless. I was, like, ‘I didn’t have any rivals.’ And she said, ‘Really? None?’ I said, ‘No…the girls in Heart [were] friends. Pat Benatar [was a] friend.”
Stevie Nicks Returns with Secret Love and New Album
When Nicks asked Perry if she had rivals, the pop star replied, “Well, it’s not us. It’s the Internet.”
She then told Nicks about the way that fans of various female pop stars will sometimes pit one against the other in ways the singers themselves don’t condone.
“I said to her, ‘Katy, let me tell you something. You don’t have any rivals. So forget that. Never say that word again,’” Nicks told ABC News Radio. “‘You don’t have rivals. All of those girls? Friends. You’ll probably work with all of them at some point. Friends.’”

Our girl is always such a strange dichotomy of kook & wise old sage. And I wouldn't want her any other way!

Thanks for posting that. At the Vegas show she said she was dedicating Landslide to Katy Perry "who has no rivals" and to John Mayer "who has no rivals." It's nice to now have the context for her word choice.

Wow, never thought these two would ever exchange for than a 'hey, hows it join'
I think it's great that they can mesh. They're both very talented performers. I can't imagine what else they talked about during those 3 hours!

I cant blame Stevie for being pissed off at Pat B because they were competing on the Billboard charts at that time with Belladonna and Pat's Precious Time album. Nevermind the awards too at the time. For other reasons.I dont know.
I enjoy Pats tunes and a fan of hers but not Katy's tunes. If Stevie can train Katy to sing and write good tunes .I might enjoy Katy.

I'm sure Stevie didn't have any rivals all those times she lost at the Grammys. (riiiiiight)
She probably couldn't stand Tina Turner and Pat Benatar.

She never had a problem with Tina but she dissed Pat several times, without mentioning her name of course. But she described the way Pat dressed onstage and did not approve of the look.

Stevie just comes off as a very bitter, gossip-y person sometimes. I don't know if I can take her conversation with Katy Perry seriously. Of course, they all have rivals. People are going to beat you to number one, beat you at the Grammys. And artists HATE it, especially if it's the same person again and again. I think Tina Turner was above all that nonsense....I'm not sure I can say the same about Stevie lol

Weren't the Wilson sisters "not even friends" of hers last year when their book revealed a cocaine binge they had with Stevie? I'm glad they're friends again this year. ;)

Well on the bright side, better not to pass on one's bad habits, fawning applause aside.

I'm only aware of this quote about Pat, and it doesn't seem that bad. Were there others?
"I never wanted to stomp around in black spandex pants. If I was going to be in rock & roll, I was going to be the most elegant rock & roll star of all."

I don't think Stevie was putting down Pat. Stevie was just distinguishing herself from the other rock & roll artists. You can distinguish yourself from other people without putting them down, you know!

I agree...apparently this was in a conversation about women in rock, so it wasn't about Nikki Six or David Lee Roth. But if this is the only "catty" comment Stevie made about Pat Benatar, I don't think it's catty at all -- it just says 'I wanted to do it a different way.'
And to be fair about it, if she ever did mean to be catty....Pat's getups weren't intended to be elegant and totally invited commentary.

that's hilarious!!
I usually think the presenters at awards shows are a tipoff to who's going to win... when some movie star's best pal is the presenter you figure they're going to win. They made it seem like Stevie was a shoe-in by having Mick there. Wondering if Pat's carrying on about how great it is to win (and the slapping the podium) was her eff you back at Stevie? hehehehe.

Oh I think it was a dig.... in Stevie's own inimitable way. Our girl was a bit full of herself for a while there. She's never one to come right out and say something like that directly, but "no one knows what I say unless you read between my lines"

I think "stomp" is pejorative. Sounds like something clumsy oafs do. I don't think Stevie thinks well of the performers who do that. But I don't know if I thought she meant Pat Benatar in the spandex. In retrospect, I think I've forgotten how Benatar dressed.

Here you go. Benatar's thing was that she wanted to play in the boys club and developed a schtick from watching Mick Jagger and other Brit male rockers. She didn't want to be androgynous; she wanted to be a girl and look like a girl but still conquer hard rock, which she did. Stevie may think "stomp" was perjorative, but Pat wouldn't have back in the day.

From an article on Mayer and Perry
http://entertainment.msn.co.nz/article.aspx?id=8801439
Their friends are also rooting for the pair, including music legend Stevie Nicks. According to the Fleetwood Mac star, John and Katy are perfect together.
"I just saw them on December 30 in Vegas, and that's where I dedicated Landslide to them," she told Us Weekly.
"They seem to be a really great couple, and they seem to really care about each other. I am just hoping for the best for them. It would be great if that relationship really worked out and they were together forever."
The musician believes both Perry, 29, and John, 36, have changed significantly since they first started dating in 2012.
Nicks is convinced despite the on-again-off-again status of their relationship, this time it will last.
"I think they're really good for each other. They're very different people, and that's the best way to go out with somebody," Nicks said.
