“Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson has been placed on indefinite hiatus from the reality program following his controversial remarks in GQ magazine regarding homosexuality.

A+E Networks, parent company of A&E, has released the following statement to Variety:

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”

As noted in a previous Variety article, Robertson discusses in his GQ interview his religious beliefs and about sin, saying, “start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” Then, the GQ writer paraphrases Corinthians saying, “don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Robertson added in the interview, “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

“Duck Dynasty” has been a ratings juggernaut for A&E, recently drawing around 9 million viewers for its Christmas special. Gurney Prods.-produced program can move on without Phil Robertson attached to the series, as the bearded men at the center of the Robertson clan include Jase, Willie and Uncle Si, among others.

I just heard this on the 11pm news.

I had to sit through 2 hours of Duck Dynasty over my nephews house on Thanksgiving. Its just another retarded reality show.

After seen this show anybody with a camcorder can do a reality show and post it on YT and become a hit.

I should film my walks.

I've read comments on my local NBC station's Facebook page about this. (Oh how I hate living in a place where people can't think without mentioning the bible). His first admendment right to freedom of speech was not violated. Hes not in jail. You can't expect to say something controversial and not have some repercussions, especially if you're in the public's eye.

I think that the show is stupid, and I'm tired of seeing their faces in every store I go into.

Yes, I'm pro gay and pro equal rights for everybody

I had to google Duck Dynasty (eesh!) but even with almost no knowledge of the subject, I love this post. Complete failure to understand speech laws in western nations is one of my biggest pet peeves. I hope you posted this on the facebook page. Some people just need it to be broken down very simply. "Nobody called the cops on him! Calm down!"

ETA: His quote of controversy doesn't actually bother me that much, now that I'm reading it again. He condemns same-sex sex as immoral. But then in the same breath condemns heterosexual promiscuity and a host of other things as sins. This doesn't seem like an anti-gay rant in particular. This is just a man operating on a Victorian sense of right and wrong, and seeming to at least be fairly consistent about it. It may be incredibly stupid, and kind of annoying, but it doesn't strike me as hateful. I'm not sure suspension was entirely fair. My guess is he's been pretty openly stupid and annoying since the network picked the show up.

But for the record, in response to his added comment, a man's anus is so insanely awesome. Seriously. He's missing out!

Ha. Yes, there are many youtube users who have amassed followings based on similarly mundane things!

I am a fan of some youtubers and reality shows, though, so my claim to intellectual superiority is pretty much nil. Duck Dynasty, however, is honestly of no interest to me. It seems like its appeal is based on people who like watching "rednecks" be... well... rednecky. So the reaction to this particular redneck moment seems a little disingenuous.

I live in a area similar to where the show is filmed. I know several people who could take place of the guy. His kind is the norm here.

I really dislike the show because it gives the world the fuel to say all American southerners are stupid and uneducated. We are actually very smart, both bookwise and common sense wise.

You are the ONLY person I have read commentating on this anywhere on the news or on the internet to actually address what was said, and to respond accordingly. Bravo! Now, let's extend that to GLAAD. Its response was totally inappropriate--as I read it, they basically vilified anal sex as "vile" and "stereotypical." While it is true that not all gay people engage in anal sex (specifically involving men's anuses), it does seem odd to me for GLAAD to characterize appreciation for men's anuses to be "vile" and stereotypical--maybe a generalization, but not stereotypical. And of all groups I would expect GLAAD to respond with some sort of support for sexual attraction to men's anuses, for those who have this attraction. In other words, its GLAAD's Gay Elite Puritanism vs. Duck Dynasty's Moral Victorianism. In this fight, I have to support Duck Dynasty. He makes the better argument. (Though not better than Dex's rejoinder hahaha!)

This is what bugs me about these shows. They can really send out some bad messages, and stereotyping. Apparently they did one in Wales, choosing particular Welsh stereotypes, which sent out a completely wrong message about Wales as a whole. I didn't see any of it but I think it got some bad press.

Good to see you.

I think what GLAAD was really objecting to was the reduction of gay men simply to practitioners of anal sex, and how problematic that is. But that's not really what they ended up saying, and their words were pretty abysmal, yes. To have my fondness for anal sex labelled "vile and extreme" from an organisation that is supposed to have my back is bizarre indeed.

I like the idea behind GLAAD, and think an organisation like that has its place, but these days they seem to be consistently misguided. I appreciate they have a tricky role to play which requires a certain finesse, but all I see them doing now is providing fuel for right-wing "political correctness gone mad" rants.

Duck Dynasty is one of the dumbest things on TV. As bad as Honey Boo Boo. I watched one episode earlier this year, and could only shake my head at their childish antics... It's just another series in what I consider a vile line of shows that glorify (or pay homage to - I'm not sure which one) rednecks, hillbillies, swamp folk and other sterotypical Jerry Springer Show guests. These are popular right now along with those other cable programs about slaughtering large sea creatures and wildlife, mowing down virgin forest, pillaging the bowels of the earth for gold and other environmental abuses in the name of glory and profit. I see all of these as a cultural backlash against the liberal TV of the 90's and early millenium new-age environmentalism.

The pendulum will swing back the other direction, and then back again to this one - it's never ending.

That said, I don't care about his opinion on gays, marriage or sex. They are his own, and he's entitled to them. He has a lot of fans, and he's speaking for them, however foolish it might be.

We have one over here where they fly celebrities into the Australian rainforest, where they have to fend for themselves and do ridiculous tasks. In the bush tucker trials, the celebrities have to eat strange creatures, some insects are alive. Its a pretty awful use of the rainforest and the poor animals.

Generally I agree with you, but I think it's important to point out the "everyone is entitled to their opinion" mantra can only go so far. Some opinions are dangerous and hurtful. When someone espouses the opinion that I shouldn't be allowed to live openly, or adopt a kid, or that I should be killed because "ew", then I take issue with that. However, if someone just espouses the opinion that I am not "going to inherit the kingdom of God", or something like that, I really don't care. At all. The latter example applies in this case. This guy has an opinion that frankly doesn't affect my life at all, and he can carry on having it.

Oh God. My in-laws were watching that religiously the last time I visited and I... It was hard. With in-laws I sometimes feel like I ought to "try" and be a part of the family, and in this case it really was a struggle. I just did not get the show at all. Why is it a thing!? I'm by no means a man without any guilty pleasures, but this is not one I understand.

I have been in similar situations myself, but it was the antiques roadshow and masterchef. But having to watch "I'm a celebrity" when you don't like it, that's tough. I caught some of the last episode - I tried to turn over and not watch, but I couldn't help but be drawn in by it. It was just a good reminder of why I try to avoid these things. As to why its so popular I don't know. I guess people like celebrity reality programs, and maybe the added bonus of all the insect goriness.

I'm trying to understand the interpretation of GLAAD's statement as being puritanical and showing a lack of support for those who engage in anal sex. As I read it, the "vile and extreme stereotypes" GLAAD was referencing in Phil Robertson's comments, were his likening of homosexual behavior to bestiality, adultery, and "sin" in general. There was a lot more to his statement than simply displaying his disgust regarding a man's anus, and I believe that's what GLAAD was referring to.

That said, he's not the first so-called Christian to make such sweeping comparisons and use the Bible as a defense. (Somehow they always manage to miss that pesky "judge not" section, among other things.) At this point, they're just making themselves look worse than they're making us look. The people who already feel as they do, will nod their head firmly in agreement -- while the people who don't, will go about their business and not let such statements change their point of view. So, there really is no use in expending a lot of energy over this.

To me, the most offensive thing he said in the GQ article was that, during the Jim Crow Law era, African-Americans were "happy and singing." Adding, "pre-entitlement, pre-welfare.... no one was singing the blues."

But bestiality, adultery, and "sin" are not stereotypes. They're concepts and practices. The only think Phil Robertson really said about gay people is that they like man butt. That's genuinely all he said. So I can only assume that's what GLAAD was referring to. He groups it in with adultery and heterosexual promiscuity as things that were once socially unacceptable that now are more accepted. And to be honest, condemning homosexual practices on the same level that you condemn many heterosexual practices is frankly something I find refreshing coming from a conservative religious American. It just seems like a much more measured view than one many religiously-driven homophobes take. I still think he's an idiot with a demonstrable lack of independent thought, and I agree with you he isn't going to change any minds, but GLAAD's response almost felt like it was written before actually reading the comment in question.

But is it not a long-standing stereotype, propagated by homophobes, that gay men will have sex with anything... including children and animals? So him lumping us in with bestialists and fornicators, and sinners in general, seemed -- on the surface, at least -- to be speaking in stereotypes.

I'm not disagreeing with you, though, overall. His comments, in total, certainly presented the views of a man who thinks any sex outside of marriage (and outside of the missionary position?) is sinful. I just don't agree that GLAAD's statement showed prejudice toward gay men who engage in anal sex.

Meanwhile, GLAAD definitely reacts too often in a knee-jerk way (Kevin Smith films, the occasional comedian taking the piss, etc.), and there have been many times when I would have rather they simply remained silent.

Perhaps, but immediately after he mentions (let's face it, male) homosexuals he says "hey, let's have sex with this woman and that woman etc", which to me separates the rest of his laundry list of sins from homosexuality, making them just one of many objectionable things about modern life. That's certainly how I read it. GLAAD may have shared your interpretation, however. I don't think GLAAD was seriously suggesting that gay anal sex is a vile and disgusting stereotype, but that is kind of how it came off to me. I think this just highlights a problem with their utterly vague catch-all statement which could easily have been copy-pasted from a literal file of, as you say, knee-jerk template responses. My response to their statement is mostly amusement.

Good points, Dex. We may be coming at it from slightly different angles, but I think we essentially agree.

Regarding GLAAD making any statement at all... I'm somewhat conflicted. On one hand, I think something needed to be said about his comments (as adults, we're immune to such views -- but there are still plenty of young gay men whose self-esteem can be harmed by being compared to sinners, etc.). While on the other hand, I hate seeing more attention being brought to this rube than necessary.

Folks like Sarah Palin are undoubtedly wetting themselves over the fact that they have a brand new poster-boy for the way their "good Christian values" are stomped on by those evil, godless liberals.

And what of GQ for printing the interview? They are the ones responsible for propogating his alleged hate speech and providing him a platform. GLAAD never takes on MTV or Eminem either.

I agree with Dex mostly. However, I also still think that GLAAD's equation is not spelled out (they don't say that he equates gayness to bestiality--which he does not) and, if so, they don't identify the stereotype (as you do, that gay men will have sex with anything). However, the most compelling argument Duck Dynasty guy makes is about male attraction to two different body parts. I say it's compelling because it's human. Why is it that, as a gay man, I am attracted to male buttholes but am, frankly, scared and grossed out by vaginas? He's got a point that it is illogical. And GLAAD does not counter the argument with an impassioned or reasoned defense of male butthole lovers (as Dex COMPASSIONATELY and CHARITABLY accomplished without grant money!). They raise a lot of money to fight defimation and then they are crushed by the Duck Dynasty guy whose HILARIOUS dangling participle alone should have made his argument easy to dismantle.

Yes, Johnny Stew. The (large) jaded side of me can't help but focus on how A&E and the stars of this show can only benefit from this controversy. I certainly know far more about this show than I did 6 hours ago, and I imagine I'm one of many like that. It's mad publicity for them. And the "boycott" isn't going to amount to much as the boycotters were unlikely to have ever watched the show anyway. So it pretty much doesn't count.

I like your "think of the children!" note. I forget about them much of the time, and I shouldn't. As a young gay person comments like this really did have an impact on me, especially given how few counterpoints were visible to me in those days. In that respect, GLAAD is helpful.

I disagree. GLAAD is unhelpful because they leave the young gay person with shame for his sexual desires--which, essentially, is what is at issue here.

Yes to most of this. Although I don't think attraction to anything is particularly logical and we should not really worry about the analysis of it in that way. Straight men like women butts too, after all. Equally illogical (but fun!). And I agree with you about the shortcomings of GLAAD's statement.

I disagree. GLAAD is unhelpful because they leave the young gay person with shame for his sexual desires--which, essentially, is what is at issue here.

Yes. I was speaking of them more as an organisation generally, rather than their comments in this case. However, in terms of offering gay-positive points to counterbalance those like the ones made by Phil, I think it might be fair to say they have been outmoded by much of mainstream western culture at this point.

Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Also Under Fire for African-American Statements....

Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments aren't the only part of his interview with GQ causing controversy.

The 67-year-old "Duck Dynasty" star was suspended by A&E Wednesday for calling homosexuality sinful — and putting gay people in same category as terrorists. While those quotes quickly went viral, it wasn't his only brow-raising statement in the interview; he also implied that African Americans were happier living under Jim Crow laws.

"I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once," the reality star said of growing up in pre-Civil-Rights-era Louisiana. "Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash. We're going across the field ... They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people' — not a word!"

Robertson continued, "Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."

Needless to say, that hasn't gone over well either. A spokesperson for the NAACP shared a copy of the letter that they, along with the Human Rights Campaign, sent to "Duck Dynasty" network A&E. In addition to asking for the network to "denounce and repudiate Robertson's comments," they demanded that Robertson "apologizes for his vitriolic comments."

"We want to be clear why Phil Robertson's remarks are not just dangerous but also inaccurate," the letter stated, in part. "Mr. Robertson claims that, from what he saw, African Americans were happier under Jim Crow. What he didn't see were lynching and beatings of black men and women for attempting to vote or simply walking down the street."

Noting that the remarks "go beyond being outlandishly inaccurate and offensive" and are actually "dangerous and revisionist, appealing to those in our society who wish to repeat patterns of discrimination," the letter said Robertson's "words show an unbridled lack of respect for African Americans and LGBT people, and the ongoing challenges members of our communities continue to experience on a daily basis."

"Surely a brand like A&E does not want to be associated with such racist and homophobic remarks," it concluded.

Robertson’s remarks about African Americans could ultimately be more damaging in the longterm than what he said about homosexuals, according to one expert.

"Racial comments are often career killers — as are scandals involving children and animals," David E. Johnson, who is the CEO of public relations and branding agency Strategic Vision, tells Yahoo TV. "Yet, looking at the demographics who are attracted to 'Duck Dynasty,' we see an older, more conservative, and evangelical audience. These people will take the comments with a grain of salt. This is because Phil Robertson and the 'Duck Dynasty' brand is one that is viewed as politically incorrect and says what is on their mind. So, in that light, the comments are unlikely to do damage — unless African Americans begin emerging and demonstrating he has discriminated against [them]."

However, "Barring that, overall, his comments and the controversy has in all likelihood strengthened the brand," adds Johnson.

On Wednesday night, the cable network did denounce the "Duck Dynasty" patriarch. In addition to suspending him indefinitely from filming, they said in a statement, "We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty.' His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

Earlier in the day, Robertson clarified his words — though he didn't come close to apologizing.

"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior," the TV star said in a statement. "My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."

Not everyone is offended by Robertson's statements. A petition called IStandWithPhil.com was launched by a group called Faith Driven Consumer and calls for A&E to reinstate Robertson — and apologize to the "Duck Dynasty" watchers who share the TV's star's beliefs.

"Mr. Robertson’s comments in GQ magazine are simply reflective of a Biblical view of sexuality, marriage, and family — a view that has stood the test of time for thousands of years and continues to be held by the majority of Americans and today’s world as a whole," it says on the site. "While the LGBT community may be offended by his opposing viewpoint, your rash, discriminatory, and unfair treatment toward Mr. Robertson — a recognized symbol of the faith community — is a slap in the face to Faith Driven Consumers and everyday Americans alike."

Needless to say, this controversy won't be dying down anytime soon.

Generally I agree with you, as well. But...I'm an American, and one of the things that we learn early in our lives is that we all have the right to pretty much say whatever we think. Some people are more polite and considerate than others, and some live to offend. As much as I might not like the opinion this guy has, or that of the KKK, or the Chick-Fil-A guy, or Sarah-I'm-an-idiot-Palin, or whoever is saying whatever with the intention to offend and hurt, I'll usually stand by their right to speak their mind. It's sort of a reflexive reaction - I defend his right to speak his opinion so that he in turn will defend my right to speak mine. Most Americans believe very strongly in the right to express yourself verbally - an MSN poll today shows that 83% of respondants support his right to say whatever he thinks.

I know in some European nations, hate-speech is a punishable offense, but here in the U.S. you have to act on your opinions for them to be considered potentially criminal. Of course, that won't stop people from shunning you for what you said, all the while defending your right to say it, as we've seen with Phil's suspension by the network.

And what of GQ for printing the interview? They are the ones responsible for propogating his alleged hate speech and providing him a platform. GLAAD never takes on MTV or Eminem either.

In another land where propagating hate-speech is a crime, perhaps they bear some responsibility. From my perspective, their right to publish his comments is just that - a right protected by law.

I'm a fan of Eminem, oddly, and have never found his gay-bashing offensive.

However, I also still think that GLAAD's equation is not spelled out (they don't say that he equates gayness to bestiality--which he does not) and, if so, they don't identify the stereotype (as you do, that gay men will have sex with anything).

Well, no -- he didn't equate gayness directly to bestiality, but he lumped them together. So I don't think it's a leap to say that he associates the two in his mind, at least to some degree. Of course, as has been rightfully pointed out, he also associated both to adultery and promiscuity in general. His was a rather sweeping statement of seemingly everything he deems to be a sin, although he also implied that homosexuality is at the top of the list.

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong. Sin becomes fine. Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there."

I suppose he has a point. But to counter that -- why is it any more illogical to be attracted to the male anus than to the female anus or vagina? I don't question my attraction to the male anatomy any more than I question the attraction of heterosexual men to the female anatomy. In the simplest of terms, "we like what we like." No logic is required.

At least he didn't question why we all like penises! Even the straightest of men should be able to understand the appeal of those. ;)

But his right to free speech isn't what's in question here. As another poster said, he wasn't arrested. No rights were violated. *shrugs* I'm more interested in the actual content of his statements, the implications thereof, and what the appropriate response really is. These are not things I've really decided on fully, yet. But I'm enjoying the discourse.

Yes, I have a hard time blaming GQ for doing what society has long established is their job. I don't think these views shouldn't be given a platform whatseover, I think they should be discussed and (easily) debunked accordingly.

In the UK, many straight men have taken to texting pictures of their dicks to each other, and loving it. Is that a thing, where you guys live? It is definitely a thing here. And to me, a very mysterious thing. Personally I've always been much more of an ass-man. Dicks and vaginas both strike me as very functional, but not especially pretty.

I'm kind of moved to start a "what do you like?" thread now, but that risks becoming a bit too TMI, perhaps.

this situation has showed me that their are hypocrites on both sides in regards to stereotyping...seen plenty of posts on FB from those who oppose his statement, but yet call Mr.Robertson and/or the Robertson clan "redneck", "hillybillies", "hicks", etc.

As for me, I am for free-speech, (Thanks to former Mrs. Al Gore and the Washington Wives/PMRC) and don't have to agree with it but I do not think someone should be punished for their opinion.

As for "anuses", "vaginas"...who cares? I thought LOVE was what REALLY mattered? Maybe I am wrong...But I would like to believe in this world that LOVE still matters...

Hey, let's not go crazy here! I like to think cocks and bums (and vaginas) matter, too. ;)

I agree with your sentiment. I think love is what matters, and the fact that Phil Robertson and other religiously-driven homophobes cannot get past the mechanics of the act of gay sex means that they miss the point entirely. And they're missing out on a lot of beauty. Any love in this crazy world is a beautiful thing.

That's not a thing here, but I wouldn't complain if it were! Actually, a couple of straight buddies have shared pics with me... I think both were curious as to how a gay man would view their anatomy. I also think it was exciting to them. A somewhat naughty, but harmless thrill.

Personally I've always been much more of an ass-man. Dicks and vaginas both strike me as very functional, but not especially pretty.

I've never watched Duck Dynasty, never heard of GLAAD, but remember GQ stands for Gentleman's Quarterly which I also have never read (and wonder if the duck hunters would qualify as gentlemen anywhere).

Homosexuality being followed by Beastiality on any list tends to equal plain old fashioned ignorance. If you want to argue that the two belong together on any basis, even religious, I can't be bothered to take you seriously. It's no different than saying people who like french kissing molest penguins or something. How awkwardly silly.

There is such a thing called willful ignorance, and the bible teaches that ignorance is not innocence.

The same person's comments about black people in the south 'not complaining' was equally depressing in it's willful ignorance. Just because there seem to be more of these limited intellects coming out of the closets of the darkest parts of the U.S., does not mean people should get used to them. A&E is a private company and can terminate contracts for any reason other than discrimination probably, but for a discriminating person to claim they were discriminated against for that only shows their isolation from the mainstream of society and likely a privileged existence to be so ignorant of genuine discrimination some have to live with every day.

Yep, we get the same stupid crap from one of our politicians over here on the debate about marriage equality. Allow gay people to marry and soon bestiality and paedophilia will be legal too, and think of the children who will all end up either getting molested by all these gay people who are suddenly going to turn into paedophiles or suddenly start having babies and raising them in (god forbid) a loving household with two parents of the same sex.

That kind of ignorance isn't thought of as being ignorant here in Georgia or in Louisiana. Most white people would agree with it. I'm scared of coming out with the real me because the consequences would be very bad. I'd get disowned, be humiliated, be told to ask for forgiveness by a god I don't think exists etc.

As for the comment about black people, welfare is frowned upon here. His opinion fits most white people.

own a TV, nor would I watch it (Other than Baseball, NHL & WWE, which I watch via streaming online) because of the stupidity of ALL Reality TV shows. I made my anti-TV decision back in August 2010, and my life is much better without it.

When I was hospitalized this summer, for severe depression/exhaustion/health issues, the other patients on the BH unit were diehard fans of the "Duck Dynasty" show - so it was their choice of viewing - and of course I was in the minority of not watching nor caring to watch.

However, it is sad to say that many people I know support the words Mr.Robertson said...and those who support his words are not what one would call a "redneck", but moreso those who are very devoted to their religion. Living in the belt buckle of the Bible Belt, I am not shocked one iota that people agree with what he said. Even Democrats in this state are defending his words, because a great majority of Dems are "conservatives"...Not a shock at all.

First off, I'm just going to say that I have NO problem with the LGBT community. I think some of the most wonderful people are gay/lesbian/bi/etc.

But what really grinds my gears is when people who don't exactly agree with that life style get unneeded amounts of hate for simply stating their opinion. Yes, his first amendment right was violated. It is purely unconstitutional for a citizen of the US to lose their job/get suspended because they answered an interview question in full honesty. Reverse the situation: What if it was a gay man who was "bashing" the straight population? How angry would people be then? Not near as much as they are about Mr. Robertson.

Secondly, Mr. Robertson was very VERY civil in his admonishment of homosexuality. "However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.” Those were his exact words, within the interview. I think Duck Dynasty is literally the stupidest show in the entire world, but I really have to respect Mr. Robertson for speaking his true, honest opinion; knowing that he would probably be looked down on because of it. He did not say anything that was considered "violent" or "hurtful". Perhaps a little blunt, but when you live in a country that allows free speech, people have to learn to grow tough skin and get over it. Everyone has the right to say what they want. If someone were to go and rant about Christians or Atheists or Gays, that is their constitutional right.

And as someone who lives in the heart of Texas, I'm going to say that we are not violently hateful towards the LGBT group. Most of us simply do not agree with it due to our religion, but will treat them just as kindly as a straight person. Of course, there are always going to be extremists that do hate gays and quote the Bible as if they wrote it themselves, but I can assure you, as someone who lives in the South, the grand majority of us are not likely to ostracize a gay person simply because of their sexuality. To be quite honest, I'm a bit peeved at how people have the perception that the South is such a God-awful place to be simply because we are predominately Christian and like to own firearms. Just because we choose to believe something doesn't mean you have to, too. Just like if Mr. Robertson chooses to be anti-homosexuality, doesn't mean you have to be. I think the media needs to grow up and try and focus on the things that bring people together; because that is exactly what this nation needs right now.

But what really grinds my gears is when people who don't exactly agree with that life style get unneeded amounts of hate for simply stating their opinion.

I have been dying to ask this question, but don't often find myself in conversation with someone who uses this phrase. What is "that lifestyle"? Serious question. I want to know what my "lifestyle" is. And what about it is objectionable to people. To be honest, I mostly work and sleep and eat, and dabble in social media. That's my lifestyle as far as I can see. I'm not trying to be confrontational. I like you, Dove. I'd just like to know what you actually mean when you say this.

There is much in your post that I find well-meaning but problematic. But I think I'm just going to get repetitive at this point.

And I like you too! And I really, in all honesty, am not trying to offend anyone.

When I say "lifestyle" I mean engaging in a romantic relationship with a man. I understand that aside from your romantic preferences, we are basically the same when it comes to how we live our common lives. We have hobbies, we eat, we have friends, and we have our own beliefs we pursue.

It doesn't always matter whether you are trying to offend anyone. But my offence is pretty inconsequential at the end of the day. Romantic preferences are a huge part of adult life and they are something that I am demonstrably unable to change. When you say you don't agree with my lifestyle, what I hear is that you don't agree with my entire life. "Lifestyle" is a misleading term, because it implies that I am actually doing something. But no matter what I do, I will always have a "gay lifestyle", because I am gay. And when people have a problem with that, it permeates into my relationships and interactions with them. How I am treated at work by colleagues who do not wish to recognize the most important moments of my life, as an example. People's opinions are not just opinions when they affect me every day. And that is why people get "hate" for stating such opinions.

I do not think I will change your mind on this, but I am trying to paint a fuller picture for you.

And I just want to emphasize a point made in several previous posts, that it is not unconstitutional for a citizen of the US to get suspended from his job for statements made in the press. That happens every day. The constitution only protects them from being arrested for such statements. An elementary school teacher who releases a press statement saying he thinks children are basically stupid and annoying would be very likely to lose his job. And a reality star who's career is entirely based on being liked and makes controversial statements that may make many people like him a whole lot less faces similar trouble.

Another thing that gets me upset and I don't understand it, is why do some "christians"(quotes used for a reason) act or think like we're trying to force them to be like us? All most of us want us to be viewed as equal human beings. I also can't believe that some people think that this is a choice. Why would a person choose a life like this where hate and misunderstanding is common? One other thing, how does two people getting married or having cconsensual sex adversely affect another person's life?

I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant (it kinda is one) n but those 3 things are pet peeves that are all too common the general opinion here.

But how does a church that doesn't believe in anything other than heterosexuality, then look after members of their community that are biologically gay, transsexual etc? It seems clear that its not a choice, its just how you are born. Are you not allowed to go to church if you are gay or transsexual for example?

It really depends on the individual church itselfn how the pastor and congregation feels. I doubt that most churches would deny a person access, but they might not be very welcoming. You might be singled out.

I've been wearing boys clothes(I'm physically a female, mentally a male) since I was old enough to pick out my own clothes and thw church I went to growing up was ok with it.

Churches that I've spoken to that do not condone homosexuality say that they "welcome" gay members. Just as long as they are not actually having sex. It's pretty classy. Celibacy has obviously worked so well for Catholic priests over the centuries, I can see why other denominations and religions would want to hop aboard that gravy train. ;)

I don't know. As I've said earlier in this thread, if people believe that I am going to hell because their religion tells them to (which is really all the original post and controversy was about), I really don't care about that. It's when that belief starts to practically affect their operation in an officially secular society that I have a problem. Logic and reason need to rule in those contexts, and the "because of my religion" defense doesn't hold water. People have used religion to defend racism and slavery, too, let's not forget. And when those opinions affected secular policy, it was a problem.

Yes, his first amendment right was violated. It is purely unconstitutional for a citizen of the US to lose their job/get suspended because they answered an interview question in full honesty.

No offense intended, but this is wrong.

A&E has a constitutional right to not be a platform for ideas they don't agree with, and Mr. Robertson's rights to speak freely were not infringed. He can go on saying whatever ugly mean-spirited things he'd like to say.

Mr. Robertson is not employed by A&E - he's a business owner with his own company that will contine to go on long after this controversy blows over.

Freedom of speech does not mean you can speak without consequence.

A few years ago, before Debbie passed, we were two of the only three votes in this town against the defining marriage law that passed in Oklahoma - which outlawed same sex marriage...BUT, being that I am ALSO a Native American, I laugh at how tribes here in Oklahoma will ALLOW same sex marriage licenses to be issued as long as one of the two people is of Indian Blood and a tribal member, thus pissing off the STATE OF OKLAHOMA because each tribe is a recognizable NATION and the state of Oklahoma cannot do a DAMNED THING about it.

I think the actual shocking part of this guy's remarks was when he declared that blacks were happy before desegregation. To top it off, a GOP congressional candidate has said that this Duck guy is "the Rosa Parks of our generation." Right, Rosa Parks would have LOVED being compared to a man who said Jim Crow laws made people of color happy.

http://www.thewire.com/politics/2013/12/phil-robertson-no-rosa-parks-despite-what-congressional-candidate-might-say/356384/

What I find most interesting is the fact that conservatives are always calling liberals cry babies. Yet, whenever anyone shines a light on conservatives public ignorance, they are the first to cry that they're being victimized. Conservatives are all about personal responsibility... this Duck guy calling out blacks & gays publicly wasn't very personally responsible. Obviously he won't suffer legally from his remarks, but he may just suffer financially. However, I doubt even that. The same people who have rallied behind Chick Fil-A will be right there with him. His income in the next year will probably triple from people snapping up his paraphernalia.

Up until about 4 months ago, I was a semi active member of a Baptist church that I had been going to since I was 3. When I started coming to terms with myself and realizing who I was, I also realized how stupid and unrealistic some Christian beliefs are. I have to fake it because of my family. I hate having to keep my mouth shut.

Now that MANY of you are bringing one of my favorite subjects into this, where in our Great Constitution does it say that he (Duck Commander) has a Constitutional RIGHT to a JOB with A & E. He may have a First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech and to express his beliefs, BUT there is NO Constitutional right to a job on TV (or making ducks calls for that matter). The ONLY right either he or AE may have is a contractual right to enforce (or not) his employment contract. Trust me, AE has a contract with this GUY and his family as well to produce a show, pay royalties and all the assorted items that go along with contracts. BUT to say that he has a Constitutional RIGHT to the job (or the show) is ridiculous.

NOW, can AE fire him? I don't know, as I haven't seen the contract and can he fire (aka sue) AE if they choose to either cancel the show or NOT renew the show? Again, this is a matter of Contract. Offer, Acceptance and Consideration................(and breach).

As a practical matter, we can all debate whether Duck Commander should have just kept his mouth shut and went on with the show or AE should have just let this ride and made millions off of the family. Regardless, nowhere does the Constitution enter into what's going to happen on this issue. Its all a matter of Contract.

No one is debating whether he has a right to say what he did, as he most certainly does (as you and I also have a Constitutional right to Challenge his beliefs and statements). BUT please don't bring one of the greatest living documents ever drafted into an argument where it clearly does NOT belong.

This issue harkens back to two years ago with Charlie Sheen and Two and a Half Men and much earlier in 2003 when Natalie Maines couldn't keep her trap shut (one which she stated last year she does NOT regret) about President Bush. The blowback for all of them, including the two innocent Dixie Chicks was tremendous and its reported that her comments cost the band $$ millions of dollars (and its future for that matter). Remember, just because you can say it doesn't mean you should!!!

Well, I don't know what it's like to be mentioned as a sin in the company of people desperate enough for a thrill to do things to unconsenting animals (judgement call of my own, true)... perhaps I am totally off base for thinking that would be pretty offensive and ignorant? I haven't actually conducted a survey you see, like the Duck fellow has of all black people in the south when he was a child in the 1960s. But since the bible is brought into this what is wrong with when someone makes public their judgements of large groups of people that many will judge that person right back?

Polite would be... "for me homosexuality would be a sin." Just speak for yourself. I don't know of any christianity that allows people to speak for God, so you can quote your translation and that's it, and mine doesn't say what this person's says, it says the very opposite a lot of times in many different ways.

We all make mistakes and errors.

You would have been better off with purchasing an English grammar book and dictionary.

Wow. OK .I see it .

It should read .

I could of used them for a rag earlier today on a job.

I didn't even realize the errors until they were pointed out. We all do them from time to time. :) I don't know how many times I've edited a post on here because of errors.

I edited this post because I misspelled "they".

Yes I see that.

I dont recall mentioning this here on the Ledge.
As I see it .I'm doing better now then I was in school.
I had a bad time in school with a learning disability with reading and grammar plus some math .

With those issues in school I had to forfeit a dream career in radio broadcasting behind the mike.

Maybe thats another reason that I'm upset with all the crap programming that is on TV and radio.

An thanks to those to keep me on my feet with my errors.I do the best I can before I hit the submit reply button.

OK back to the topic.

I didn't realise that we had to use perfect English when writing in here?!! I certainly haven't been. It would get really boring if we were worrying about getting every message perfectly right...boring.....boring....boring...

Don't forget the fact that we're from different parts of the world. We spell things differently and use different phrases.

Yes! My intention was to respond humorously to what I felt was a needlessly snide comment. Now that the initial comment seems to have been deleted, I hope mine hasn't come off wrong. Sorry guys! I'm not an asshole! I swear! (I pretty much am, though)

I'm pretty laid back about spelling and grammar, as long as I can understand what you mean. If I can't, I will ask you to clarify. That's all it takes. No big thang, IMO.

Well I'm glad I just had a quick check on here. No no no...I didn't mind you post at all, I thought it was very humorous, and to the point in a really good way. I was thinking earlier, I hope my post didn't come off in the wrong way to Dex (it definitely wasn't a dig at you). It even crossed my mind to send you a PM. I enjoy your very well written posts and everyone else's who write in their own way. I just hated the thought of people holding back from posting.

Anyway, thanks for your message.... I really must get out of the house now... ;)

I'm sure there are some errors in here....but never mind.....

You're such a diplomat! :) I really appreciate the flavour you've brought to the forum since joining.

You can always PM me, m'dear. And that goes for anyone. Don't think about it too hard. I love the PMs. Seriously. It's borderline fetishistic.

OK, I seem to remember you mentioning how much you like them. I would have probably sent one today, but you addressed the issue I was thinking about. Next time I get the urge, I'll just do it! :D

according to what I just read Phil Robertson will be back on "Duck Dynasty" come Spring time, that is what A&E is stating...

Nothin' like controversy to make even more people want to watch it, good ol' publicity (Rather it is good or bad) brings 'em back each and every time:

'Duck Dynasty': A&E resuming show with Phil Robertson
Dec. 27, 2013, 5:39 PM EST

By Tim Molloy

"Duck Dynasty" supporters have won their standoff with A&E: The network has reversed its suspension of star Phil Robertson for making anti-gay comments, and he will not miss a single episode of the upcoming season.

Shooting will resume in the spring, and will be accompanied by a series of public service announcements "promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in 'Duck Dynasty,'" the network said.

The network suspended Robertson last Thursday after he compared gays to "drunks" and "terrorists" in a GQ interview in which he also said African-Americans were perfectly happy before Civil Rights.

But the network suffered a huge backlash from "Duck Dynasty" fans and social conservatives, who said it had limited Robertson's right to free speech.

A&E may face another backlash for the decision to cave on the suspension — but it tried to minimize it by dropping the news on the slow Friday evening between Christmas and New Year's.

The standoff created a catch-22 for A&E: "Duck Dynasty" is the most popular reality show on cable, but ignoring Robertson's comments would have made it appear insensitive. After Robertson was suspended, the rest of the cast put A&E in a bind by saying they couldn't imagine doing the series without their patriarch.

When A&E suspended Robertson, it said in a statement that it was "extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty.'"

"His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community," A&E added. "The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

On Friday, it explained why it had abandoned that decision.

"While Phil's comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the 'coarse language' he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article," the network said. "He also made it clear he would 'never incite or encourage hate.' We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.

"But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views," A&E added. "It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family... a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about."

A&E spoke with both GLAAD and the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition, both of which objected to Robertson's remarks. Jackson said Monday that Robertson's statements were more offensive than those of the Montgomery, Ala. bus driver who ordered Rosa Parks to give up her seat to a white passenger, a moment that launched the Civil Rights Movement.

But others rallied to Robertson's defense. The petition IStandWithPhil.com, which called for his reinstatement on "Duck Dynasty," yielded 250,000 signatures in a week.

Here's the full statement from A&E:

As a global media content company, A+E Networks' core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into people's home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals.

That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson. While Phil's comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the "coarse language" he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would "never incite or encourage hate." We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.

But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.

So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family.

We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.

I saw in the listings that they had a Duck Dynasty 'marathon' during the holidays. Lots of other specialty channels seem to do this marathon thing with other shows (I only appreciate it with some of the dramas I've missed being aired in chronological order).

I've still never seen more than a few seconds of the show, which puts it in the company of Honey Boo Boo and Toddlers and Tiaras, other shows that make white folks look goofy.
