I found this video on Fleetwood Mac News. It has a wealth of Stevie Nicks information in it including (a Beatles story, Reese Witherspoon, her up coming part on AHS) and her discussing if she wants Christine M
McVie back or or not which starts at 12.51

http://<iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/81241292" width="500" height="279" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe>

What is interesting to me, is Christine seems to think she has to be ASKED to come back into the band, but Stevie says NO she DOES NOT. She's part of the Mac in Fleetwood Mac so she can come back if she wants.

Which means if Christine just wants to show up to the tour rehearsals and say OK guys I'm back, I'm touring and I'm willing to stick this out for as long as I have too; everyone in the band would say OK there's the keyboard lets get going.

But my next question is what would happen to Brett if Christine came back??

As far as I have heard everyone in the band loves Brett and if Christine comes back they will have to find another place for him (because I'm sure they won't just let him go) and he might not be too happy about that.

Brett seems like a happy easy going guy but he may not be too happy being relegated to backup keyboards or guitar. That could also explain why (IMO) Lindsey has not seem to psyched about Christine coming back in the past. Lindsey's very loyal to friends and family (we all know he and Brett are very close) and if he thinks Christine coming back is going to upset Brett or cause a problem with Brett's position I can see him not being too happy about the change, but like Stevie said Christine is part of the MAC in Fleetwood Mac, so I don't think Lindsey will ultimately stop her if it's what she really wants.

Lastly, It seems that Lindsey and (now) Stevie fear that halfway though a tour Christine might quit again (maybe I'm mistaken but wasn't there talk of The Dance Tour, doing more shows in 1998, but then Christine quit and all that stopped) and that would defiantly be a problem, because even if the band can revamps the songs, the lighting, the stage production etc...and continue on without her the fans that don't get to see her with the band are gonna be pis**d off and the rest of the band members would have to deal with that.

Interesting.

I think you're right that there's a concern that Christine would quit again, not remembering how gruelling a tour can be, particularly fifteen years after she last did it. I would understand all of the others worrying about that: The Dance was, at some stage, intended to be a world tour, but they hadn't signed up for that yet. When it came time to talk dates and numbers, Christine honoured the initial 40-date contract, but chose not to extend it beyond that. However, she would not have said what she said to The Guardian journalist if she hadn't thought about that: she isn't daft. She's been in therapy, she's travelled with them, she is back to performing on stage, and she knows what it entails.

As to Brett, well, there would be a role for him, but of course it wouldn't be as prominent. I think he's respectful and smart enough to realise that if the creator of the keyboard parts he is playing wants to return to her role, then he should step aside. In any case, there may very well be an enhanced role for him, given that Christine may need help on her return, having not played for so long, and Brett could fill some of the spaces for her. Also he could still do singing and guitar; I get the impression he loves being part of the band, whatever part that might be, and wouldn't mind returning to the role he performed on The Dance.

It's interesting that you say Lindsey is loyal. That may be so, though I think Richard Dashut - on recent comments from various sources - might disagree.

But my next question is what would happen to Brett if Christine came back??

Same thing that happened to Jana Anderson when Lori Nicks came back: Brett will be shown the door. Or to be more accurate, he just won't be called.

If the band is really worried about Christine changing her mind and quitting before the next album and or tour are completed they can always put it in the contract...Think of it as a "Rock and Roll" pre-nup...

You really think they wouldn't call him back? I thought they would just have him move positions. In that case I can definitely see why Lindsey could have a problem with Christine coming back. 1) Brett is his buddy and I'm sure he's loyal to Brett. Also 2) If they drop Brett so Christine can come back and then halfway through the tour Chris decides it's too much and she leaves again they are scre**d. Because I doubt Brett would come back and save them and then they would be stuck with trying to find a new keyboard player.

I knew Jana never came back after the SYW tour, but I always thought she was suppose to just be temporary, not that they never called her back. I like Lori, but that's kinda cold they could have kept her and had 3 back up singers instead of 2.

Just so everyone knows I posted this video separate from Michele' s Billboard thread because there's a lot more in the video than Stevie talking about Christine. But since all the talk is about Christine the I guess we should merge the threads.

I think Brett still has plenty to do with Christine there. He was even playing on Don't Stop in London when she appeared. His saving grace is that he plays more than keyboards. Christine has a lot of songs that can use his layering on both guitar and vocals.

At first view I thought.... "Wow, Stevie sounds like she really doesn't want Christine in the band." I kind of thought her body language and voice did not lean on the positive side.....

but, now I look at it...and I think it is Stevie kind of saying.... "I would love for her to come back, but we have begged for years....and I just don't want to get my hopes up.....so I won't be disappointed." But, I know she must really want her to come back....

I know, if she came back. This would be massively huge for Fleetwood Mac.....like a huge massive tour production..... I sure would love to see those five together next year. It would TOTALLY make 2014. ;););););)

I dont see why not Brett can play on the side of Christine like some bands have two drummers, guitarists and keyboard players and so on.

I guess that the way it is.Music biz a place of business .Its a job .I've seen it happen everywhere.

If they dont need you. They will send you out the door with a pink slip.

I hope Brett stays.

They could easily screw him over and if they needed him in a clinch he'd be back with them so fast you wouldn't even be able to say boo. What better gig could he get than that of with Fleetwood Mac?

I think it's interesting when Stevie talks about a future Fleetwood Mac movie. She says the movie should start the week before she and Lindsey joined Fleetwood Mac, but shouldn't there be a little more back story than that, like Chris joining the band and Stevie and Lindsey marketing the buckingham nicks album that caused Mick to call Lindsey and asked him to join the band?

Actually Fleetwood Mac the band has so many unique stories that they could do a trilogy. First movie would be the beginning of FM before Stevie and Lindsey join 2nd movie would be when Stevie and Lindsey join up to The Dance when Christine leaves and the third would be FM beginning with SYW to whenever. They may even need to do a fourth movie like twilight did to fit it all in.

Exactly...I have a feeling that FM's next tour will be quite extensive...Even more so if Christine returns...With John's health scare and Christine's return and knowing this could be the last time "the 5" are together you can bet they will tour for all they're worth...

They could do that and I think if Christine rejoins certain members of the band may insist on it, but really if one member of the band decides it's too much for them keep touring and is unhappy I don't think anyone in the band would want to force them to stay and be miserable.

All of this makes me think that if Christine had not quit the band in early 1998 that they would have kept on touring in 1998 and I have seen many people post that they thought The Dance Tour was the best FM tour they've seen so far. So sad....

Well that would be a slap in the face. Your demoted and your pays cut just because one of the original band members is sick of her self enforced exile (I'm not being mean just looking at it from Brett' s posssible point of view) and wants to come back. I would be ticked off if it were me. However I doubt they would cut his pay too, that would be too much for him too have to take especially since he's done nothing wrong.

He's a journeyman musician; he doesn't, I don't think, have particular job security in any part of his work. So 'demotion' wouldn't be the right term. In any case, as I said on the previous page, he seems respectful enough to realise that he ought to step aside if Chris comes back.

It's not about having done anything wrong. I should imagine that, if Christine came back, there'd still be plenty for him to do as there was in 1997. She will need, as Michele says, the same assistance which she had then, and he can also play guitar and sing.

Yeah, you can't disguise... (sorry, LOL!) body language unless you're some kind of sociopath, which she is clearly not. Stevie's definitely showing some resignation about the issue. I agree with you that she isn't getting her hopes up. But I also think she has adjusted her view on the topic a bit in light of other opinions on the matter.

I met Brett a few years ago and he seemed like a pretty good, down-to-earth kind of guy. He'd understand if he had to step down. But I wouldn't feel bad for him because he plays guitar also, as Ulpian said. And there's always a role for him in Stevie's touring band.

I agree that as a working musician it's part of the job, but he still's a man and I don't know any man that would be OK with getting moved to to a back up position or having their pay cut. I mean logically it makes sense, but emotionally it still hurts.

Wow. Well, as a man I find that a little insulting. I'm sure you didn't mean it to be, so I'll run with it. As a man, if the job I was doing had been done by someone else previously, who had pretty much written the book on what I was doing and whom I respected and liked, I'd step back and take a different role in a heartbeat.

As for the pay, what do we know about financial arrangements? They might pay him the same if she came back but instead of doing the main keyboard parts, ask him to take on other stuff in addition to backing keys.

I just think from all I've ever read about him, in his words and others, that he would be totally fine about it. He has other streams of income from other musical jobs and, let's not forget, it's been a huge privilege for him to keep Christine's seat warm these last three tours, but - with great respect to him - that is all he has done.

Honestly, I don't think any guy I know would take it well (and by that I don't mean they would get mad or yell, but they would still be upset), even if they did understand why it was happening. I think Brett still has plenty to do with Christine there. People might not realize it, but there are a lot of keyboard modules and workstations in use at a Fleetwood concert. Christine had a backup keyboardist on the Tango, Mask, and Dance tours, and it was a full-time job in every case. The old-timer fans used to complain about all the "hardware" onstage. We were essentially complaining about all the keyboard equipment.

If there's anyone here who knows Brett, ask him whether he gets any workstation or "triggering" help from a second guy. Is he his own keyboard techie?

It would be interesting to know what Lindsey's say is on the matter. So far, we've only heard what Stevie's said he's said. But whatever his view, he has been giving her his opinion on Christine since Christine left I would guess, so I doubt he could make her overhaul her own views since September, if he hadn't influenced her in the 15 years before September.

In the program, Bruce Hendrix is listed as "key technician." I don't know if that is the same thing as a keyboard technician. Michael Kianka is a "key technician/programmer."

It seems like the success of The Dance tour took them (or maybe not them, but the industry) by surprise. I guess the promoters didn't jump on board until they saw how well those first dates went, then maybe that's when the offers started pouring in. But Stevie has spoken many times of all the money they could have made and how they spent the whole tour trying to change Chris' mind, offering her a kitchen, etc.

Let me say about Jana, just because she was dropped from Stevie's tour doesn't mean she would have been dropped from touring with FM again, if she hadn't gone public with her displeasure. When you are deciding how to trim the budget, the fact that Jana complained about you on social media doesn't make you really want to keep her.

They probably didn't need 3 singers anyway, but I don't think Jana did herself any favors. Don't get me wrong. I don't blame her. I might have done the same thing, but there are career consequences.

Funny side note-
I believe this/these interviews were shot at Barnes and Noble in a back room before the signing. We saw her security guy, Martie, in the store hours before the actual signing. Also, that IYD promotional sign behind her was in the bookstore in the morning, then disappeared later. We were able to get photos with it before that.

Michele

Well, Lindsey has been consistent about how he feels about the possibility of Christine returning. He tends to repeat what he's already said in previous interviews and this is the case with his most recent interviews (e.g. Rolling Stone), that Christine has burned her bridges and he enjoys the group now as a foursome. But as the prospect of her rejoining the band came back up in London, it seems like his position (relayed through Stevie) intensified. Stevie can be over-the top dramatic at times, but I don't think she's exaggerating about Lindsey's views. Given all we know about him, it seems more than plausible that he'd passively try to make arguments to discourage her from rejoining.

I agree that it would be helpful to hear what Lindsey's most current thoughts on the subject are. But I don't think they will be too far off from what has already been reported.

Yes, but wasn't that in the context of a brief return to do one song? I think his views on a full-time return would be different.

No, actually his shocked and pleased comment wasn't about her doing one song in London. It was about her returning full time. But he didn't think it would happen.

why would he be shocked that she'd want to return for one song?

his comment was exactly about the possibility of her full time return. he said he would be shocked if she'd want to return full time. shocked and pleased.

Stevie said that Lindsey said "come and go" with respect to the appearance in London and how it could have been more than one song. She didn't say he said it about a full time return to the band. So, even Stevie hasn't said what Lindsey's thoughts are on this yet.

Second, if Stevie said "coming and going" wasn't important to her in London, what has Lindsey done to change her mind about that in the few weeks that have passed? Why was she so against his point of view in September, but now he has "influenced" her to his way of thinking? They spent the whole summer together, but she still said coming and going wasn't a big deal to her at one point. She can change her own mind, without him changing it for her, since he hadn't changed it in the last 15 years where Christine is concerned.

The thing is, when Stevie said that coming and going was not important to her, Stevie was also talking about Christine coming on stage to appear in London. She wasn't talking about Christine's full time return to the band in September. Maybe her views have ALWAYS been that Christine should know what she's jumping in to before returning. Stevie was talking about how miserable Christine was 13 years ago and saying that Christine had toured since she was 17 and didn't want to do it anymore back then. Her recent comments about how hard stage shows are sound like hers and not like Lindsey's. She didn't just parrot the "come and go" line. She also tossed in a lot of arguments against a hasty return to the band that Lindsey has NEVER voiced in the press and they don't even sound like something Lindsey would say. He might talk about how horrible band politics and (in the old days) drugs were when they toured. He never said that touring itself was hard.

Plus, we recently saw with the Without You intro where Stevie said that Lindsey told her the band didn't want her, but only wanted him, that Stevie exaggerates what Lindsey says. Lindsey didn't say that on the video. Mick pointed to him, to indicate that the band wanted him and not a duo and all Lindsey did was mutter, "me? Me? Me?" From that Stevie gathered that Lindsey was telling her they wanted a "smoking" guitarist and not his hippie girlfriend, but that's not what Lindsey said. Stevie doesn't always recount Lindsey's words accurately. She intuits what he means and then elaborates on her own. There is some projection there, which is natural.

This reminds me of Sheryl Crow. Do you remember when Lindsey said that Stevie got upset with Sheryl Crow? He said both Mick and Stevie were upset with Sheryl. Mick and Stevie never said they were upset. Lindsey was clearly upset with Sheryl. I think he just put the words in Stevie and Mick's mouths. I don't know if Stevie ever told Lindsey she was mad at Sheryl Crow.

That's the case here. Christine has also confirmed that Lindsey didn't want her to do the first London show. I believe that. But whether Lindsey said she can' just "come and go" or not is a mystery. Especially, since Stevie is saying it now, as if they were her own words. Maybe they always have been. It's not that she doesn't want Christine to return. It's that she wants Christine to know what she's getting into. She is the one that said Christine looked at her with her big blue eyes and said she can't do it anymore and that touring was Stevie's dream, but it wasn't Christine's. She is the one who said she knew Christine was done and meant it. Maybe she is the one who wants to make sure Christine means it now.

You may assume that Lindsey has influenced her behind the scenes, but since she is the one who told us what Lindsey said in the first place and we've never heard from Lindsey, I don't make that assumption.

As for Lindsey's burned her bridges, he said all he meant by that was that Christine sold her home, divorced, moved back to England, etc. He didn't say that it meant that she could not return to the band. I think the connotation was clear to him, so I've never liked his repeated use of the phrase, but that's what we've heard him say all these years. We haven't heard him say "she can't just come and go." But you're right. He likes to repeat himself. Maybe one day we will hear him say it.

Aside from that, Lindsey likes to be blunt and irritating, so his views will probably be very straight forward and maybe unwelcome when we hear them. But there's no guarantee that they will be what STEVIE says they are.

Excellent analysis Michele. IN light of recent comments from the Nov 22, 2013 Guardian Interview, it appears fromthe "tenor" of what has been discussed is that Christine has NOT been formally asked to return and that the "one night gig(s) " were just that. Reading between the lines, there's a LOT of work to be done if and when she is to return to the band. Since these things are all legal, i.e. contractual anyway, there's a LOT to be hashed out for a future tour with her.

See the following quote: " Yet the group's singer, keyboardist and songwriter seems to have caught the bug and has said she would like to rejoin permanently. "I like being with the band, the whole idea of playing music with them," she said. "I miss them all. If they were to ask me I would probably be very delighted … but it hasn't happened so we'll have to wait and see."

She was obviously referring to a song she's written called "Illuminati" which is about her signing "Illume" in Cincinnati

What is funny though is this. If you listen to Dreams backwards you'll hear the words "Illumi-nonsense" as well as "They say witch but that's bulls***", and "There's no power in witchcraft."
So I guess we can fairly say that Ms. Nicks doesn't believe the John Todd story

Thank you for having a rational perspective on the issue. Brett was with the band before Christine left. It's not as if he was replacing her. All this bull**** speculation about his feelings getting hurt by possibly being regulated to his former position is just stupid. And it's not that Lindsey doesn't want Christine back in the band. He is just concerned about how committed she would be. I wish they would at least record another album with her. Stevie is very astute to mention how arduous a tour can be, implying that Christine has to have a strong constitution to take on that task. Though not exactly the same circumstances, she could record with the band sort of in the fashion she did with the Time album, with the expectation that she'll only appear in limited number of live shows.

Stevie addressing a possibility about a some future movie is typical Stevie blather that shouldn't be taken so seriously. Throughout her career there a many examples of her speaking and speculating about things that never come to fruition.

Why would anyone want to see some cheesy film depiction of their history? Most movies of that kind don't come off well. I rather have a well-done comprehensive documentary and/or a big fat book about them from some esteemed author.

I don't think his comments address separate issues…London, studio recording, touring. His view on Christine leaving the band has been the same since she left. I think he just prefers Christine being in retirement because it has let him have more creative control of the band. From Say You Will, to the EP, to being called the inspiration in the studio and the stage (according to Mick), he’s been the one in control. As a result, he’s been the happiest he’s ever been in years. And I don’t think it’s just because of his kids. He essentially runs Fleetwood Mac now. But that changes if Christine comes back to the band.

I attribute Stevie’s slight change in attitude (i.e. her latest interviews about Chris) on getting along better with Lindsey. It’s very apparent that they communicate much today than they ever have. They're willing to listen to each other. So I can see her empathizing with Lindsey and his concerns about Christine returning to the band permanently. If anything, I think that's what is coming across in her latest interviews, Lindsey's side of the story. I don't think he's completely against it, but I don't think he's totally on board either.

This is all speculation and entertainment. But that’s what we do as fans who post to a fan board. There’s no problem with talking about it, one way or the other.

But anyway, Stevie's comments about Christine are similar to what they were in 2003/2004 when she finally accepted that Christine wasn't coming back. So, I don't see anything new or newly "influenced" about them at all.

You think? See, I would say that's untrue. Christine said in 1997 (Best Buy) that they all form a bed on which Lindsey rolls around and does whatever he wants, so I think he always ran the band's stage show. The only difference is he got to do more of his own songs with her 1/3 gone and, of course, the piano was less a focal point. But in terms of the band's sound and arrangements live, I think he always had control of that.

He loses space and time (and songs) upon her return, but I don't think he loses control. And I don't think he was happy about her leaving in the first place. Going down memory lane, I want to point out that after she and Lindsey apparently had a big fight following SYW, Stevie's worse fears about performing without Christine had come true, but before that she was (publicly) promoting their quartet.

This isn't the first time she has talked about what a "rock" band they are. She was doing that in 2001. Actually, Stevie was giving those kinds of interviews before Lindsey was, because she was promoting TISL in 2001. She is the one who was FIRST saying what new things they could achieve without Christine. Lindsey said it too, but he was saying that in 2003 and 2004, not in 2001, because he wasn't being interviewed that much in 2001. So, she's not suddenly mimicing what he says about what they've developed into as a four-piece. She was saying that stuff 12 years ago. She is the one who said it originally.

"If you take Christine's synthesizers and organ out of the mix then the whole thing will go back toward the guitar so that's an exciting premise for all of us because we love to rock,'' Nicks says enthusiastically.

According to her, being a power foursome is her and Mick's idea. Not Lindsey's, based on this 2001 comment.

Mick [Fleetwood] and I are going to make this happen; we're the strong ones, and we're going to push this through if it kills us. We really want to do another record. Christine [McVie] doesn't want to do it; if that's what she wants, that's what she's going to get. But under that circumstance, Mick and I think it's very exciting, and Lindsey and John [McVie]. That pushes Fleetwood Mac back to being a power trio, basically; you take that lead keyboard element out and you are left with a more guitar-centered band. That's a very exciting premise to all of us, so I think it'll happen.

What I think is pretty great about the idea of having to move ahead without Christine -- because she really is not going to do it; it's ok, she doesn't want to, that's alright, it's her world, and it's her choice -- but without her, you take her out of the mix, then you're taking the synthesizer/organ out. You're also taking the trio of singers away, so the trio singers are going back to...what? To Lindsey and Stevie, to Buckingham/Nicks basically. The band itself goes back to being much more guitar orientated. It could go back to Blues; it could go back to serious ZZ Top Rock & Roll or whatever. It gives us, I think, a very interesting artistic thing to do with Fleetwood Mac now. I'm very excited about it, I will run "Trouble in Shangri-La" to where it ends, and when it ends I will probably go straight into the studio with Fleetwood Mac.

And I think the fact that Chris won't be there is very interesting, too. It'll be just Lindsey and me singing again, so that really goes back full circle to where we started in San Francisco.

Only? A lot can happen in a couple of months. It only takes one conversation to change anyone’s opinion about anything.

I don’t think she was clamming up about him. I think she was adjusting her views. My speculation is that she has started to accept some of Lindsey’s arguments. I also think Lindsey is passive aggressive. I get that impression from reading Carol Ann Harris’ book and watching him behave passive aggressively in the Say You Will documentary. So I don’t think he would ever bluntly say that Christine couldn’t come back to the band. Conversely, I don’t think he would ever completely welcome her back either.

But anyway, Stevie's comments about Christine are similar to what they were in 2003/2004 when she finally accepted that Christine wasn't coming back. So, I don't see anything new or newly "influenced" about them at all.

Whether she was influenced is my speculation based on her tone and body language when the interviewer asked about Christine. She could have been tired of answering the same question over and over again for all we know. Not everything can be explained by citing quotes from past articles.

You think? See, I would say that's untrue. Christine said in 1997 (Best Buy) that they all form a bed on which Lindsey rolls around and does whatever he wants, so I think he always ran the band's stage show. I never disputed that he ran the band’s stage show. I said that he basically runs Fleetwood Mac because he has full control over the stage and the studio. Maybe that’s always been his role. But without Christine's influence, the Fleetwood Mac albums have been sounding like his solo projects, which is probably why they aren't selling well. If Christine came back, I would expect the sound of the Fleetwood Mac albums to be more melodic and less edgy. Many Ledgies would disapprove of this, but they would definitely sell more albums.

Sure, I believe Lindsey was initially upset at Christine leaving (which of course he had no reason to be considering that he did the same thing 10 years earlier), but probably more so because she abruptly cut ties with everyone.

I wasn't reading her mind. I was reading what she SAID. You are the one who said she was saying it because Lindsey influenced her. I wasn't trying to get into her head. I was just listening to her words. You're the one who said they were someone else's words and I am just saying -- not really, because Stevie also said similar words in 2001. It's not just Lindsey who has said that.

No, but quotes from old articles on the very same subject can certainly indicate whether that is something that Stevie has said for a long time or whether it's a sudden change of viewpoint caused by Lindsey's magic influence over her from September to now.

As far as Lindsey's position in the band, Stevie has said that Lindsey had absolute control in the studio too. He was the "Ayatollah." From her point of view, he actually has less control over her output now than he did when Christine was in the band, because now they're more 50/50. She said in the old days that she was kept in the "back of the bus" by him. I think he's had control since Rumours hit.

I don't know whether he wants Christine back in the band or he doesn't want her back. I wasn't trying to divine what he thinks based on what Stevie has been saying about the Guardian interview. I think Stevie can have an independent position on the subject without having been influenced by Lindsey.

As for your point that SYW sounded more like Lindsey's solo projects, I would agree with that. I don't know if that's the reason for its low sales though. I think their age and the era contributed a lot to those poor sales.

Anybody else think they probably BOTH want Christine back, but are just really wary of the carrot that's being dangled in front of their noses being yanked away? Or perhaps, they just want to temper the fanbase (us) to not be terribly devastated if Chris doesn't actually return.

Exactly! They don't want to steal the thunder of any official announcements. Plus, I doubt they have any contractual agreements hammered out to make any proclamations just yet, either.

I don't think Christine would have told the Guardian she wanted to come back, if there hadn't been some kind of tacit agreement about it by the band.

Stevie talked about the Vegas gigs and Christine being on safari in January. Maybe they plan to do something contractually and officially in February, once all that is over and the extra time will give Christine one last chance to change her mind. But they seem to be on the same page, because Christine wasn't talking about returning to record (which seems to be in the works as well), but she said she wanted to live out of a suitcase again.

I definitely think they want to make a big announcement and have a grand Rolling Stone spread, or something, to herald the news. Michele

Yep. Stevie hasn't said anything about not wanting Christine back. All she said was that she asked Christine to make sure it's what Chris wants.

It was a joke. You sarcastically mentioned The Supreme so I threw it back at you. I wasn't accusing you of mind reading.

No, but quotes from old articles on the very same subject can certainly indicate whether that is something that Stevie has said for a long time or whether it's a sudden change of viewpoint caused by Lindsey's magic influence over her from September to now.

Like I already said, people can change their mind. And with Stevie, she does change her mind. She once said that she wasn't interested in recording a new solo album, but she changed her mind. Words are not set in stone. Opinions change in light of new information. We don't know what has been said since London because it hasn't been reported. There's obviously more to this that we don't know about yet. You're speculating and I'm speculating about things. Just because we don't agree doesn't mean what I present is inaccurate. It's just my opinion and interpretation.

The point I was trying to make is that he would have less control if Christine came back. In the December Mojo article, Stevie says, "[Christine's] the only one in Fleetwood Mac [Lindsey] was ever willing to listen to." So to me, that says that she had strong creative influence.

I don't know whether he wants Christine back in the band or he doesn't want her back.

Then why tell Mojo magazine not to use a line-up shot including Christine on the cover of their issue about the making of Rumours, which is what the writer says? I think the bigger reason is that Lindsey is extremely insecure and has a fragile ego. He doesn't want to be upstaged by Christine now that he has more control and influence over the band. This is my interpretation, not pulling something out of the divine.

As for your point that SYW sounded more like Lindsey's solo projects, I would agree with that. I don't know if that's the reason for its low sales though. I think their age and the era contributed a lot to those poor sales.

I think age and era were minor considerations. There are plenty of other artists who are just as old and older, The Eagles and Rolling Stones, for example, who still hit the platinum mark with new album releases. But when you try to churn your audience stylistically, some of them are going to drop off, which I think happened with Say You Will. Christine, along with Stevie's songs, helped bring their sound more to the center.

Say You Will just didn't sound like a Fleetwood Mac album. It sounded like a Lindsey Buckingham solo project, experimental and a little scattered. It also sounded dated in parts. Scaling down the number of songs would have helped. Overall, it was a mixed, incohesive work.

it did not. Lindsey's solo project, original Gift of Screws, had mixed styles but it was cohesive and far superior to SYW. if you are looking at it as a whole album (as opposed to a grouping of individual songs), SYW sounds nothing like GOS1.

for whatever reasons, the label would not let that album out in 2001, and instead *convinced* Lindsey he should roll it into the FM project. come to think of it, why did they let Stevie put her album out in 2001, instead of making her roll some of those songs into FM project too, and have FM album out in 2001 instead of 2003? which would make sense and be much sooner after the big bang of the Dance. i don't think i've ever heard any LB fan say GOS1 is not some of LB's best work, while SN fans seem to be very divided on TISL.

I agree. Gift of Screws isn't your typical Lindsey solo album, like Law & Order, Go Insane, or Under the Skin. His typical sound is not for everyone.

It comes down to what will sell. The label pushes Lindsey to use his most melodic solo work for Fleetwood Mac releases because they think it will sell better under the Fleetwood Mac moniker than if he released it on his own. I think Lindsey has capitulated on this a number of times because he knows there is some truth to it, and plus he will be guaranteed that his songs will get the exposure.

The label doesn't usually suggest that to Stevie because she can usually be guaranteed to sell at least 500,000 copies of her albums and several thousand copies of her retrospective. Her music is generally more commercial and mainstream.

Were we debating TISL? There's no doubt that some fans were split on TISL. Some said it was overproduced, some said Stevie's voice was noticeably more nasal, and some songs were quite bland and forgettable. I generally like the album because I grew up with a lot of the demos, so there were at least five songs that I was going to like no matter what. But sure, it's not for everyone.

That was my point. The question is, did they show him a line up shot that included Christine and did he say, "don't use that one?" Either way, Christine wasn't back in the band at the time. I don't connect that writer's Mojo cover comment to him not wanting her in the band. He may want her or he may not, I have no idea.

For this thread, I was reflecting on Stevie's Access interview, which isn't about what Lindsey thinks. It's about what she said about Christine needing to be sure it's what she wants, how touring is hard work and they've built themselves into a four piece without Christine. Stevie so frequently says "Lindsey thinks" or "we" or "Lindsey and I think" so when she comes out and speaks for HERSELF and doesn't mention Lindsey, I don't assume she's revealing his thoughts and not her own.

No, it didn't sound like Fleetwood Mac in many places, but it really couldn't sound like an LB solo album either, what with the 9 Stevie songs in it.

Also, I don't think he would have put both SYHA and BTLH on on LB album. Maybe one or the other. They were definitely using those songs, plus the single, Say You Will to fill in the gap left by Christine.

I actually never thought that the album sounded like 2 solo albums slapped together. I thought it sounded like a hybrid of Stevie and Lindsey, but that it missed key Fleetwood Mac elements. But even if Christine had been on board for the album, I don't think it would have sold that many more units in the world we lived in in 2003.

If FM had rushed out and recorded an album in 1998 to trade on The Dance's success, then I think that's when the five of them could have had a lot more in record sales.

No, it didn't sound like Fleetwood Mac in many places, but it really couldn't sound like an LB solo album either, what with the 9 Stevie songs in it.That album sounds like twelve albums mashed up. All the songs from different projects, studios, and eras, and the different producers and engineers—that album sounds like one of those anthologies, like "Great Hits From the '80s."

Also, I don't think he would have put both SYHA and BTLH on on LB album. Maybe one or the other. But as far as I can recall, he planned to. Both those songs were on the album he & Mark Needham presented to the studio execs. Maybe he didn't give it all that much thought one way or another.

I actually never thought that the album sounded like 2 solo albums slapped together. I thought it sounded like a hybrid of Stevie and Lindsey, but that it missed key Fleetwood Mac elements. To me, what it missed was that style of engineering—the complementary nature of EQ highs and lows—that Ken and Richard used to give Fleetwood Mac two decades prior. It was that quality that made Mac albums sound so clean and made them so playably easy to listen to in various settings, whether car audio or home stereo or Sony Walkman. No matter what setting, the Ken & Richard albums sound as if they had been mastered for that setting. The Say You Will album sounds cruddy—kind of tinny with that quality that makes sensitive ear drums pulse uncomfortably.

I'm just not a fan of his playing style and production work on his solo albums, which is the main issue. I think he tends to play frantically and his music gets buried in production. That's just not appealing to me. Less is more. I also don't find many of his solo albums very melodic, which is why I like most Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks albums. I own everything that Lindsey has released, but I don't listen to his solo albums very often, if ever after the first month of release.

I actually like OOTC quite a bit because it has more of a commercial sound without being overly produced. It's quite melodic and understated, like a classic Fleetwood Mac album. He does have some frantic moments on there, like on the bombastic "Doing What I Can," but he keeps it in check for the most part.

I think there's a difference between listening to what Stevie expresses in an interview and your saying, 'well she was definitely influenced by Lindsey.' I responded that it would be interesting to hear what Lindsey has to say on the matter and you claimed you already know what he thinks about Christine's return.

That's great for you, but I wasn't telling you that I know what Stevie thinks or what Lindsey thinks. That's what you're doing. And it's fine for you to think you know. That doesn't stop me from listening to the actual people or wanting to listen to them.

Time and chronology is more than in interpretation or opinion. It's a fact that the Mojo writer interviewed Lindsey before the London appearances ever happened, the writer didn't even know that Christine would be making a cameo in London. The Mojo FM interviews were in the January 2013 issue and were conducted before January. Long before there was talk of Christine's full time return to the band. Before Hawaii.

In fact around the time that Mojo interview was conducted, Mick and Stevie were saying they had to give up the dream of Christine coming back. The writer's interview with Lindsey and the band and even his subsequent interview with Stevie (which must have occurred in August or September) happened before Christine said she wanted to return to the band. So, you can't realistically bootstrap the writer's opinion onto what you think they think about Christine's return to the band.

Yes, Lindsey's feelings about Christine's leaving are consistent. I never said they weren't.

I don't think they've intensified though. I recall him saying strong things in 2003 that he hasn't repeated since.

Oh, I can accept a dissenting view. You weren't giving your view though. You were giving the Mojo writer's view. No, I don't accept that. Not when I can read what the Mojo writer said and point out that it's different from what you claim he said.

With this mojo writer you said he connected what Lindsey said to Mojo last year to Christine's return to the band full time -- something that no one was discussing until the Guardian said she wanted to return, that was AFTER we heard from the writer in August or September. So, there's no way the Mojo writer connected anything to Christine's return to the band full time. You were doing the connecting. You think that Lindsey's views about Christine appearing in London are the same as his views about her returning to the band full time. It's fine for you to think it, but there's no basis for saying this Mojo writer thinks so too.

The writer talked to Stevie about Christine's return for the upcoming London appearances.

[Mojo] The big Fleetwood Mac news is that Christine McVie is back. How involved has she been?

[NIcks] She’s just re-emerged to do one song. It could have been a few songs, but Lindsey’s very funny about that. Chris left in 1998 and we didn’t start Say You Will until 2002. It took us that long to figure out what the hell we were going to do without her or even if we could do without her.

[Mojo] Lindsey seems almost cross about Christine’s return. He said she’d “burned her bridges”, and asked MOJO not to use a line-up shot including Christine on the cover of our issue about the making of Rumours…

[Stevie]I think his words to us were, “She can’t just come and go.” That’s important to him, but it’s not quite so important to me. Chris is coming to Dublin when we go into production rehearsal, and she’s going to come on and do Don’t Stop the second two nights in London. Much as Lindsey adores her and he does; she’s the only one in Fleetwood Mac he was ever really willing to listen to he doesn’t want the first night reviews to be all about Christine’s one song, rather than the set we rehearsed for two months. But it will be wonderful to have her back up there, and from there, who knows?

I said I don't connect Lindsey's comments to him not wanting Christine in the band and you not only spoke for yourself but yourself and the writer: "Well, he did, and so did I. " That Mojo writer never said anything of the kind and interviewed Stevie before the London shows before it had come out publicly that Christine wanted to return.

Now, this is Lindsey's comment about Christine from last year and I went to find it to showcase the distinction between a discussion of Christine's leaving and a discussion, like the one below, of her return. They're really two different matters.

Ultimate Classic Rock,
http://ultimateclassicrock.com/lindsey-buckingham-would-be-shocked-christine-mcvie-rejoined-fleetwood-mac/

“It’s an odd thing for me, in many ways I’m having a better time in the band as a foursome, only because it opens up a range of things that I can do,” he continued. “Except for maybe ‘Don’t Stop,’ we don’t do a lot of her stuff. It opens up the amount of material we can play, it allows me to be more of a ‘guy,’ to be more of who I am up there.”

Of course, Buckingham hastened to add, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss McVie’s contributions to the group. “I would be shocked if she ever expressed any interest to do anything with us,” he mused. “Shocked and pleased.”

In Buckingham’s eyes, it’s all about what McVie wants — and that doesn’t include having anything to do with her former life as a pop star. “She ended up getting a divorce, she ended up selling her house in L.A., she moved back to England, she quit the band, she sold her publishing. She didn’t necessarily have to burn as many bridges as she did,” Buckingham explained. “Everyone sometimes wonders whether or not there might have been more of a middle ground for her to strike, not necessarily in terms of her staying in Fleetwood Mac. But she just wanted to reinvent herself. She seems to want to lead the antithesis of the life she led before, and I don’t pretend to understand such a radical change, but it was obviously something she needed.”

Yes, Lindsey's feelings about Christine's leaving are consistent. I never said they weren't.

I don't think they've intensified though.

I agree that Lindsey's feelings of Christine's leaving are consistent. I don't think he's intensifying his position, though... he's simply been elaborating his feelings this past year. He's referred to Christine "burning her bridges" since what, 2003? Maybe before that, in fact. However, lately he's simply delineating what he means by that. Her quitting the band, getting a divorce, selling her LA home, selling her publishing, moving back to England, etc.

I do wonder what Lindsey thinks about her possible return, though. She's really the only one in the band that completely calls him out on his sh*t. And like he said himself, her return musically limits him in multiple ways- his song arrangements for the band (both live & in the studio), setlist time, etc. So Lindsey's all-important ego may be victimized by Christine's possible return.

However, like the Destiny Rules documentary shows, Fleetwood Mac does mean a lot to Lindsey. I think he really wanted Say You Will to be the album that healed the band from his infamous exit following the making of Tango In The Night. Not just that, but to right all the other wrongs the band did to each other during their heyday. Perhaps Lindsey was a bit bitter that Christine's departure has denied that opportunity. But I would be willing to bet he's still very much wanting to set everything right with one more studio album from the 5 Fireflies.

I've seen this somewhere before but if Christine sold the publishing/copyrights to her songs won't they (FM) have to get some kind of licensing agreement from the holder of the copyrights in order for the band to perform the CM songs...So that could mean FM will have to pay someone outside the band if they want to perform their own songs...Is it possible that if they aren't granted permission they won't be able to play Christine's songs??? And I know that he was still in the process of buttering up Stevie and trying for a second EP. He may be still buttering her as we speak, but the odds that he was going to get any studio album were very slim. Stevie didn't want to do it. Now she will. Having Christine back may be his only way of getting an FM album at all, even if he only has 1/3 of the songs on it.

I don't know if he was disappointed with SYW, but if he was, this is a chance to give the world a more satisfying final word from FM.

There are a number of “rights” involved in a song that the copyright holder controls. These “rights” are licensed for use in a public performance, on a CD, in a film or TV show, in print, or on the Broadway stage. The copyright owner [i.e. publisher(s)] licenses these “rights” to other parties for the use of their song and in turn receive “royalties” (payment) for each use. The “rights” are as follows:
The Performing Right is the right to have your song performed in public (on radio, TV, live venues, satellite and internet radio, background music services, etc.) and is represented by a PRO, like SESAC, who licenses these rights on your behalf, and then collects and distributes performance royalties to both the songwriter and music publisher of the work. The majority of a song’s income will come from performing rights royalties.

The Mechanical Right is the right to “mechanically” reproduce or distribute your song on to a fixed medium, including records and CDs. The mechanical right gives you the ability to collect on the sale of a song to the public. The record company obtains a Mechanical License from the publisher for this use and is responsible for paying mechanical royalties to the publisher for each use. Many publishers utilize The Harry Fox Agency [www.harryfox.com] to handle mechanical licensing grants on their behalf, as well as synchronization licenses (see below). The record company pays royalties to the publisher who then pays the writer. If you are both the writer and publisher of a work, then the royalties would be paid directly to your publishing company, for both writer and publisher shares.

The Synchronization Right comes into play when your song is used in a film or as part of a television show. Your music is “synchronized” to the film, either in whole or in part. The producers of the film or TV show will negotiate a Synchronization Fee – “sync fee” – and will acquire a license from the publisher to obtain permission to synchronize the music. These royalties are paid to the publisher of the work who then splits the royalties with the songwriter.

The Print Right is the right to have your song used in printed form such as a songbook or sheet music. Print Rights are generally handled by a publisher who specializes in this area.

The Grand Right is the right of the copyright owner to perform or license others to perform their song in a dramatic matter, which advances the plot of the production in which it is included (such as a Broadway show). This requires a license from the copyright owner separate and distinct from, what is commonly known as, the “small” performing rights which SESAC represents (concert and live performances, incidental and background music on TV programs, and radio airplay, just to name a few).

Other Rights: The Sound Recording Performance Right is the right to have your sound recording performed in public (as opposed to the song or underlying composition embodied on the recording). Currently this right is limited in the U.S. to require that certain digital services --Internet radio, satellite radio and cable TV radio-- pay a royalty for the streaming of your sound recording. Terrestrial radio is not required as of yet to pay such a royalty. The Sound Recording Performance Right also allows for performers (both the main performer and background singers/musicians) on the recording to earn a royalty when that recording is used by these digital services. SoundExchange is the organization designated to collect and distribute these royalties to recording artists and record labels. For more information about SoundExchange go to www.soundexchange.com. If you are, however, a background singer and/or session musician go to the AFM & AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund at www.raroyalties.org. This organization collects royalties on behalf of both royalty artists and session performers.

What did Jana say about being displeased about the touring situation? Must have missed that one but that's nothing new! Thanks all.

She posted on Facebook that she wasn't invited to be part of Stevie's solo tour. She said she wasn't told directly. She heard it from others and she was upset.

The thing is, if she hadn't complained in the social media there is still a chance that she could have been invited on the next FM tour, even if Stevie cut her from the solo tour.

I just think you should not complain about your employers online. It will only come back to hurt you.

Thanks for filling me in on that,I really appreciate it. I always learn so much on this forum! I agree with you-if you have a problem with your employer you should discuss it with them directly, not on social media-even if your employer is Stevie Nicks. Also Jana said she heard the news through others-that could have just been a rumor and she should've known better IMO.

It wasn't a rumour. She found out she wasn't told about an upcoming rehearsal from another band member. That's how she found out she was no longer in the band. She was never told she wasn't needed any longer. They just cut her loose.

And don't get me wrong, I would feel the same way that Jana did, but even if your Facebook page is private, that's not the place to discuss it.
