As Mick says, the backbone of the band.

It differs for each person, but even the chemo is not as bad as it used to be in the old days and that will be the worst part. So ... cheers.

As Mick says, the backbone of the band.

Absolutely. And the most beloved member, as well. The man is universally adored in the Fleetwood Mac community.

I'm guessing his wonderful sense of humor and calm demeanor will go a long ways towards his return to health. There is a lot of love & good wishes being sent your way, John. Get better soon!

Sorry Louie, but I can't agree with you on that one. Whilst I certainly wish him the best healthwise, that doesn't change the fact that I despise the man. I actually don't see why the band can't still tour Australia and New Zealand without him.

For right now, for 2013 he's not supposed to do anything. Once we get into the future those are other days for other decisions.

They cancelled New Zealand and Australia and should cancel Vegas, IMO. Obviously, there's time to get another bassist for Vegas, but I think they shouldn't.

Then, we'll just see the lay of the land towards the end of 2014 and 2015.

If John dies(I don't even wanna type that word :distress:) or recovers but can no longer preform or play bass, Mick can start a new band with a different name or do his solo stuff.

Fleetwood Mac without the "Mac" in the band will not be right.

Don't forget there may be contractual obligations.

I'm not 100% convinced that Live Nation just said "Oh GOSH that's a shame, well we certainly wish you all the best; don't worry we'll just write off the 50 million dollars we just lost." And God only knows who else expected to be getting a piece of the pie.

Also, don't forget there's dozens of jobs at stake. The roadies, just as one example.

Ok, barring anything that's related to this current tour. I don't want to "Fleetwood Mac to tour in 2015 with (insert name) on bass instead of John Mcvie" I doubt that Stevie would agree to it anyways. Not too sure about Lindsey.

This is something I have been thinking about all day. These people are all now in their mid 60s to early 70s. Clearly, the death of the Bobs didn't affect the Rumours folks. But John getting sick should shake them to the core, and hopefully make them put all their silly decades old ego fueled differences aside. It's time for all the power plays to end, and for these people to come together and rally behind one another.

As far as the future, Fleetwood Mac should absolutely, positively be put on hold until John's return. If for whatever reason he does not return, that should be the end of the band, period. John was the reason why Peter Green formed Fleetwood Mac. He is the absolute backbone of the band, it's reason for existing. There is no Fleetwood Mac without him.

John McVie is a member and namesake of this band we all profess to be fans of. There should be a little more respect shown during a time when he is fighting for his life.

John, I send all my prayers to you and your family and friends. Bob and I always had a sweet spot in our hearts for you and wish you all the best. We are counting on you to recover from this. You were always such a sweet soul. I am here for you and your family should you want to talk. Please know I have been through this and clearly know from both sides what you are going thru. I had a liver cancer scare several years ago and they misdiagnosed me and gave me 6 months to live. They were wrong. It scared Bob to death, and of course you all know what I have been through over Bob's illness, etc. I am here for you. I truly mean it. I beg all of you to send John prayers.

What if that's not what John wants them to do? What if he wants them to go on with another bassist (i.e. George Hawkins)?

It's really too early to speculate the band's future. That's probably the furthest thing from their minds right now.

Obviously if John wants them to go out with another player, then so be it. Not gonna deny that it's a bitter pill to swallow, if that's the case.

I agree.
It's easy to pin the success of Fleetwood Mac on Buckingham/Nicks; but I've often thought that the reason all these songs get under your skin so easily is because of John's bass lines. He really is a one-of-a-kind player. Mick Fleetwood is the heartbeat and John is the soul of this band.

Like a heartbeat drives you mad, in the stillness of remembering what you had...

I can't believe the disgusting comments from some posters on this thread. This was meant to be a thread sending John good wishes as he fights a horrible illness, NOT some talking shop where you speculate on the future of the band as if he's dead or talking over old mistakes he may or may not have made forty years ago. God almighty this place makes me sick sometimes.

And that, is indeed the bottom line. Let him get well first, the other things come in later.

While I also didn't appreciate the direction the conversation has went into, this announcement has also (unfortunately) brought in more questions, especially since we aren't really certain which type of cancer he has (only speculations based on second hand sources) and how serious it is (which will most likely be disclosed once they're ready to do so).

Hopefully everyone gets a Christmas present and John would be on his way to a complete and full recovery.

I am seriously saddened to hear this. When I saw them in Charlotte back in June, I'd already seen the band once before in 2004, Stevie solo in 2005 and Lindsey solo in 2011. The only thing different from this year was I was taking my long-time girlfriend with me this time in an effort to get her into the Mac. As a drummer, she knew my idol was Mick and that I loved the way he just went at it live, same for Stevie and Lindsey, but John I stayed mum on because I wanted to see if she got just how amazing he is with his playing and she did. About half way through the show, after Landslide had ended, she leaned over to me after the audience had died down before Never Going Back Again started and she said "Where did the bassist go!? He was so good!!!"

Now, every time we ride around in the car and The Chain comes on my ipod, she hums along with the bassline. John is the finishing blow of the band. Lindsey's guitar playing, Stevie's vocals and mysticism, Mick's insane nature behind the drums and then in, quietly, stealthily, comes John for the kill. You don't always know he's there but when you realize it, he floors you. If anything happens to John, I'd be extremely devastated. Fleetwood Mac just simply is NOT Fleetwood Mac without Mick and John. If one of them goes, the band in my opinion is done. Mick can go back to the Zoo or whatever, Lindsey and Stevie can become Buckingham Nicks and do their Mac and solo stuff together, but there is NO Fleetwood Mac without John or Mick. With that said, I'm wishing John a speedy recovery. I know its a sucky, sometimes long road because my father has cancer right now so this news hits fairly close to home, and I wish his family and the band all the best. Here's to a final Mac record or tour with John healthy and on board. Get well soon, sailor.

It is interesting though that when someone gets ill everyone suddenly thinks the very best of them. Now I have nothing but respect for John McVie and wish him well in his cancer battle, but sometimes I feel that it could be the devil himself and people would be upset if anyone said a bad thing about him.

You have to accept that when people get ill or die, there will always be those people who will say "good, that is what they deserve". You may not like it, and personally I think it is unpleasant, but it is a fact of life, and you can not stop someone from expressing their opinion on here whether or not you like it.

Also, pretty good chance that John McVie doesn't really give a damn what anyone thinks of him.

Best wishes and POSITIVE energy to John McVie and his family as they go through this tough time. I'm hoping that his treatment and recovery goes smoothly and as comfortably as possible.

Using the word "despise" about someone one has never met is a bit odd, at best. Particularly in a place where fans are expressing their prayers and well wishes.

Point taken. However, as a matter of fact I was rather thinking of friends or family of his who might see this and be upset. John has answered questions on this forum before and it's known as a hub of fan activity. One might not unreasonably look here to find positive vibes from the fans which might shine a little light on a dark day.

There are other threads to discuss John's past failings, or whatever it is people don't like about him. I simply was appalled at people peppering hate on a positive thread which was, I think, meant to send him only good vibes to get well.

Exactly. John may care what people think about him, but he doesn't care what people HERE think about him. Comments here are not going to upset him personally or impact his upcoming fight. This is not a tribute board. I know people use it like that, but it really is not one.

If people are baiting and trolling to inflame other people posting here, once that's determined, it won't last long. But the moderators are going to make that determination. If you're being attacked, action will be taken, but if John is, not so much.

Trolling will be handled. But if all a poster is doing is insulting band members, that's not wrong. It may trouble others, but there are plenty of places you can go where people will only pay honor to the public figure. This place has never been like that. So, I don't know why anyone would think it will magically change now. It won't. Reverence isn't required or particularly encouraged, here. You should know that by now. If you think fans shouldn't talk like this, then stop considering it a fan site.

As far as talking about John's future goes, we WILL talk about it, appropriate or not, until we see him on the stage again. That's just a matter of fact. It may not be respectful, but it's going to happen.

We love him, but he's at home with people who KNOW and love him and that HE knows and whose opinions he cares about. We are not those people. We have no idea what his cancer is, what the course of treatment is and what the prognosis is, so clearly our views are uninformed and will not impact those who do have information in any way whatsoever.

I don't quite agree.

A thread on this board was started to send a band member good wishes, and was meant to be positive. All sorts of guff is being put forth on other threads and in other fora about how unjust it is that so-and-so may not now be coming to wherever, and how John is no saint etc.

That we cannot have one thread untainted by the selfishness and bitterness of some posters is totally dispiriting; for that is what it is. Go elsewhere, to another thread, if you want to have the discussion about the future of the band. We know it is being talked about elsewhere.

One can come up with all the high-handed explanations one wants about freedom of expression or what you think the purpose of this forum is, but it doesn't wash for me. I just think it's sad; that's all, really.

Dear All,
I don't get a chance to post here often, but I just had to take a minute in the wake of yesterday's sad announcement about John McVie.

I've been scouring the internet for further news on type of cancer, etc., and found this article by United Press International (UPI), which states that it is liver cancer.

http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/Music/2013/10/27/Fleetwood-Mac-bassist-John-McVie-diagnosed-with-cancer/UPI-16501382906136/?spt=rln&or=2

Has anyone heard this to be definitely the case?

My former boss' father had it, and it worries me if it's what John has. My thoughts and prayers go to him and his family at this difficult time.

Best to everyone here,
Amy

I didn't say anything about Freedom of Expression. And you can be sad if you like, but the board is never going to be what you want it to be, so remonstrations won't help.

You can dedicate threads to different subjects, but we had one titled the cancelled shows and one titled open-endedly "John McVie" and they became a magnet for all sorts of discussion related to John McVie. Perhaps, if there was one titled "John McVie, Get Well Wishes" then all posts that were anything but could be moved elsewhere, but the bottom line is posts aren't going to be removed because you think they're disrespectful.

That article was written almost 24 hours ago. In this day and age, I think that a retraction would've been made by now. Liver cancer is probably the most likely candidate, for lack of a better word. However, until somebody from within FM's camp comes forward with more info, I'm not going to fully believe anything.

The bad perceptions we have of liver cancer only apply if it's not caught in the early stages. If it is, that's rare, BUT in John's case, we have to assume he passed a pre-tour medical examination just this year. So, that's reason to hope that nothing was at an advanced stage then and that it's really true it was caught early on.

I could be wrong, but I don't think a standard Physical and History battery would detect something like colon/liver cancer, unless there were specific tests performed due to symptoms. What troubles me (assuming the tweet is accurate) is the fact that the cancer has spread to the liver, which means that it really wasn't caught at its earliest stages. The big question is whether there is lymph node involvement or other sites of metastases, which makes the prognosis significantly cloudier. I suppose the best we could hope for is that they have caught everything in surgery and that radiation and chemo post-surgery would help to eradicate any residual lesions. And I hope John doesn't have to wear a colostomy for the rest of his life.

Well, the liver can regenerate if you only have to take a section. Also, if early enough maybe even a transplant is viable. Remember how many healthy and productive years Larry Hagman lived after a transplant.

What if that's not what John wants them to do? What if he wants them to go on with another bassist (i.e. George Hawkins)?

It's really too early to speculate the band's future. That's probably the furthest thing from their minds right now.

I agree 100% with this whole post. If Mick himself and the rest of the band members (including John) want to go on with out John, later on and after Australia (since that is cancelled), I don't see a reason in hell why they couldn't. Sure, he's the MAC in Fleetwood Mac, but just because we say Fleetwood Mac isn't Fleetwood Mac without him doesn't mean it's true. There can be many variations of Fleetwood Mac, and they can call themselves whatever the heck they want! :)

Yes it is ok. No, it's not a tribute board. John isn't actually a member of this board, although he did post here 10 years ago. He is a public figure and things are going to be said about him that people don't like.

Listen, you know that scene on Airplane where everyone stands in line to hit the old lady, with all of their different weapons in hand? Well, everyone here can stand in line and have ONE shot to hit the old lady that is Phil's controversial post. So, anyone who hasn't expressed their disapproval yet, step up and without attacking Phil personally, say you disagree if that's what you want to do. You can do that once, but we aren't going to have the same people continuing to post on this subject. I think that itself detracts from the "John McVie" topic. Enough.

We aren't going to have a series of posts saying.

^LOL. She wasn't an old lady after all. I'm confusing her with another character in that movie.

Another thing I was thinking following the liver discussion is you may have seen shows after London and I didn't. But just from the videos -- which I know don't give you the impression that attending the concert as a whole do -- the band has looked kind of happy and buoyant for most of the last month of shows.

I mean, not John, but Mick, Stevie and Lindsey. Vibes are subjective, but I would have expected them to seem a little different if they thought the outlook was very bad. Of course, the last Landslide dedication is another story, but I mean the shows before that happened. They seemed pretty bouncy.

Until it's confirmed by the band, I wouldn't believe anything that's coming out about John's cancer. Thus far we've heard liver, colon, and throat, and to varying degrees. The bottom line is that it's all rumor until official sources say what it is.

The fact that the Vegas show appears to still be on tells me that the band is optimistic that at least that show will still go on. That could also easily change.

But -- forgive me I am just quoting what I heard Sanjay Gupta say about Michael Douglas:lol:-- he was saying that the original source of the cancer matters. So, if it started as colon cancer and spread to the liver, then that's not the same as when it starts in the liver, survival rate wise. Although, like Ed said, if it spread from the colon that means it wasn't as nascent as we'd hoped.

I've only seen videos from the other shows and they did look pretty happy to me.

I think so. There was that one time where we talked about Stevie having a cold or something -- both Stevie and Lindsey having a cold. And Stevie seemed off to the people who were there. But after that, they've seemed kind of happy and I don't really think they're that good as actors. I think they must have been feeling positive about John, to be up like that.

I just say that about Stevie and Lindsey, because I've seen their moods change on stage. I can't really say about Mick. I honestly can't say that I've ever seen Mick act differently from one show to the other. I mean, I have to go by what he SAYS. I've never noticed a real change in his demeanor. I mean, he's somber when the mood calls for it (like after the Reno fight), but he can turn it right back on after the somber moment passes.

It's fun to remember him and John on stage playing when they come back from the encore. The way John always wards Mick off, puts up his hands. I am sure they continued to do that for the last shows. It would be fun just to have the last two shows in their entirety, now that we know.

And Stevie and John have some little routines too. They tip hats to each other and she bows to him a lot during GDW.

If the cancer has spread to any distant organs, things aren't really looking pretty good because it means it's already in a pretty advanced stage. :distress: But until we get an official word, our minds will not be at peace. Still hoping for the best and that the treatment he's receiving will help a tremendous amount regardless of his condition.

Mick is supposed to be writing a book for next year. I wonder what he will put in the book about this, while still respecting John. I know John wasn't particularly happy with some of the stuff said in Mick's last book.

Of course, John does talk about personal things when asked. It's just he does so few interviews. But when they do a group thing and they've asked him about his drinking and Christine, he's been forthcoming.

Sending you John, all the power and love to heal; selfishly for all of us fans because you so mean that much to us all...all these years ! Can't wait to see or hear you back on the stage with your bass guitar and while your at it, drag that sexy ex-wife of yours along for the ride again..we have waited too long to "believe in the five" again babies !.........Can I get an amen !!!

Of course, John does talk about personal things when asked. It's just he does so few interviews. But when they do a group thing and they've asked him about his drinking and Christine, he's been forthcoming.
Yeah, but that's all out there, anyway.

I've never really heard him talk about Julie or Molly.

I've never really heard him talk about Julie or Molly.

This is the only interview where, to my knowledge, he has mentioned his wife or daughter: http://fleetwoodmac-uk.com/articles/FMarticle0603.html. His part of the interview is way down at the bottom.

On the Best Buy CD he talks about Molly. How she did Rhiannon for a school production and she chose to do the loooong version of it.

Fleetwood Mac Cancels Tour as John McVie Undergoes Cancer Treatment

By ALLAN KOZINN

Fleetwood Mac announced on its Facebook page on Sunday that it was canceling a monthlong, 14-concert tour of New Zealand and Australia, set to start Nov. 10, because its bassist, John McVie, was scheduled to undergo cancer treatment during that period. The statement did not say what form of cancer the 67-year-old Mr. McVie had, and Liz Rosenberg, the group’s spokeswoman, said she had no further information.

Mr. McVie — the Mac in the band’s name — was one of the group’s founders, joining forces in 1967 with two of his colleagues in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the guitarist Peter Green (who left in 1970) and the drummer Mick Fleetwood, as well as a second guitarist, Jeremy Spencer.

Mr. McVie’s ex-wife, Christine McVie, was the band’s keyboardist from 1969 to 1998 (they divorced in 1977), and has joined them intermittently since then, most recently at a concert at the 02 Arena in London in September. The band completed a European tour on Saturday, just before posting its announcement.

The Facebook announcement includes a brief statement from the band, which includes Mr. Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, that reads: “We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best.”

The statement did not say whether a planned show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 30 would go on as scheduled, but tickets appeared to be available through a link on the band’s web page.

I definitely wish John the best, and was saddened when I first saw the news. I'm sure he'll fight through it, without a doubt.

And I don't disagree with you. At all! I cried a couple of times the other day, when we found out about the cancer. But barring opinions that we don't like, would turn this board into another Seven Wonders board...(note that it's now defunct!)

yes I can see that:nod:

I couldn't believe it when I saw he was ill - just as they seemed to be getting on really well and enjoying touring, and even Christine was out of hiding. Oh well....thats how it goes sometimes

Get well John!! and fast!

If you are going to say that John's personal life is his business and shouldn't be discussed that's fine just make sure you apply that rule to ALL members of the band...

Why wouldn't it apply to all members of the band? If Stevie announces she has a terminal illness, I shouldn't feel entitled to know what the disease is. That goes for anyone, whether they are famous or not.

I'm not saying John's personal life shouldn't ever be discussed - he is a celebrity to some extent, and he is somewhat in the public eye so it's unavoidable that people are curious. But discussing "are they or aren't they sleeping together" or "who was that song really about?" or "how much blow went up all their noses?" is one thing - health/illness is quite another (patient confidentiality ring a bell?)

Same for those wondering why we don't have more details. Why? Because it's none of our business.

I don't realistically see the band lasting any longer if either namesake member were to pop it. In the worst case scenario being discussed here Mick wouldn't want to do it, he's done projects in his own name without John before, and a certain former couple would probably breathe a sigh of relief at not having to work together anymore, though I'm sure they'd wish each other well. I remember one of the band (not sure which) saying in a late 80s British documentary that as far as they were concerned there was no reason why there shouldn't be a Fleetwood Mac while both Mick and John were alive. I'm sure the namesakes have a gentleman's agreement to retire the name should one of them pass away.

And note I'm not dissing anyone in the band here.

Fleetwood Mac: John McVie's undisclosed cancer was caught early enough and he is in good spirits

FLEETWOOD MAC: McVie's Cancer Caught Early

John McVie's undisclosed cancer was caught early enough and he is in good spirits -- at least according to John Mayall, who employed McVie in the Bluesbreakers before he left to join Fleetwood Mac.

Mayall told 94.5 3WS he called his friend and says McVie is "very optimistic and together on it because it's such an early stage that it is treatable... He didn't seem like an ill person on the phone."

As a result of the treatments McVie is undergoing, Fleetwood Mac's Australian tour has been canceled, but their December 30th show in Las Vegas is still on their schedule.

Has anyone considered the possibility that once John's health improves his priorities in life may change...Being told you have cancer is a big wake up call and he may decide that the time he spends with his family or boat are more important to him than FM and that it's time to retire...

I've thought about this at length since I heard he was diagnosed with cancer. If that's his decision, how could any of us not support it? He's been in the band 45 years... if he wants to quit, he certainly has paid his dues.

However, it just seems playing is in his blood. And with Christine's recent announcement that she wants to return to the band in a full time capacity, I can't see John wanting to turn that down. It seems to me like his nature would like the full circle of at least doing 1 more album/tour with Christine onboard.

I think for better or worse, he doesn't think that touring with FM is tantamount to leaving his family. They are his family, as annoying a reality as that may be.

I think one thing Christine may have found is, the idea of leaving FM to make up for the time that they caused you to neglect your blood relatives (clearly she wished she had spent more time with her dad in the end) doesn't really turn out the way you'd imagined.

She is very close to John Perfect and he sounds like her best friend really. He knows all of her stories and secrets. But I don't think being away from FM to make up for lost time with him really felt as gratifying as it probably sounded in 1997. And she has nieces and nephews, but she didn't watch them grow up. She watched Amy and Lucy grow up.

I know Lindsey begrudgingly said that he'd gone through more with FM than with anyone except his own family. Then he had to correct himself and say that he'd actually experienced more with them than his own family. That wasn't anything he said out of love. It was more hard truth and I think the reality is as long as he's not having to be cooped up in a studio with Stevie and Lindsey, when it comes to being on stage, he might feel just at home there than in Hawaii with his legal relatives.

Upon further reflection...

Maybe the cancer will be a big wake up call and he may decide that he's done dealing with the Stevie and Lindsey drama and will form a new blues band with Mick, Christine, and Rick Vito. They'll make a new album of originals and will constantly sell-out on the theater and festival circuit.

First I think we should wish John HAPPY BIRTHDAY:woohoo:

Second that's a great idea John, Mick, Christine & Rick in a blues band...When it comes to the blues Rick is a much blues man than Lindsey...Sorry but I prefer the Rick & Billy FM over the artsy LB FM and how about the slide that Rick played on Bob Seger's "Like A Rock"...

I don't think they will ever fully retire so this could be a little side project "The Fleetwood Mac Blues Band" they could play a little club for a week and put out a DVD like Jeff Beck did with "Live At Ronnie Scotts"
and check out Jeff's Bassist because Tal is great...

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/VC02wGj5gPw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Or they could just bring Rick in now and put Stevie in her "Tusk hair" and you could have this...
