View Full Version : Live at Red Rocks DVD question...

I'm watching this now and what the hell is up with this dvd? The editing is awful, I mean seriously what is up with all the edited in close ups that have clearly been filmed at another time because her makeup doesn't even match! Also, can anyone tell me if the dvd features the original sound or has it been dubbed over because I swear at some points the singing doesn't match her mouth.
I've watched this DVD before and I'm not as unhappy with it as I sound here... but the editing and weird syncing ruins some of this for me.
I think it's safe to assume that the singing on that album has been significantly tweaked, comparing how she sounds on that DVD with raw live footage from that era. I know some degree of tweaking is standard for concert DVD releases but Red Rocks gives a pretty severe treatment to her vocals. I still love it though. I treat it as one long, highly enjoyable music video. If I want a more "authentic" Stevie concert experience I go to the HBO or PBS specials. But sometimes the sound of the Red Rocks DVD just really hits the spot.

It's not the DVD's fault... it's Stevie's. She is the one who insisted on redubbing her vocals, and reshooting her close ups. Probably because she looked and sounded BAD at that point in her life. Remember, the Red Rocks show was supposedly the last time she did coke. So she was an especially hot mess. Thus, the concert DVD is a hot mess as well.
I imagine the prospect of a live DVD release must be pretty daunting for any artist at the best of times, let alone Stevie at one of the more insecure periods of her life. Concertgoers having a truly live experience are likely a much more forgiving audience than a living-room audience who are going to watch/listen to a performance over and over. However, I do think she could've tried a teensy bit harder to make this release at least feel kind of live. But then, the Tango DVD release suffers in much the same way. It seems like at that point in time, "live-ness" just wasn't what anyone had on the brain.

Haha yeah I thought so. I did wonder if her vocals were maybe not upto scratch at this point (I've not heard any of the raw footage from this concert, but I have noticed a difference in her voice when listening to songs from around the same time).
Don't get me wrong, I do still enjoy this DVD and, like you say, it should just be treated as one long music video which is how I will treat it when watching it in future.
I love the White Winged Dove concert that is somewhere on YouTube. Not sure if there is a DVD released of that particular show but there should be! Please tell me that video is more 'genuine' than Red Rocks?!

Ah ok, I shall blame Stevie then. It makes me wonder why they bothered releasing it at all... but I shouldn't complain really. Anything Stevie is appreciated really.
And yeah I read that Red Rocks was the end of her coke days and she apparently told her doctor she couldn't give up while touring as it would be too difficult so she vowed to do as little as possible during this tour and would clean up afterwards. Judging from this DVD I don't know if she stuck to her 'as little as possible' rule. Haha.

I'm happy to have it, though. However critical we may be of it, it is representative of her as an artist at that point in her life. And it's a particularly unique period for her, I think.

You're right ofcourse, on both counts :)

Somewhere here on The Ledge someone posted a long time ago an interview with someone who worked on the post production of the Red Rocks video and he talked about what a nightmare it was putting it together. It's a testament to his creativity that it works at all. Apparently it was like putting a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle together with all the various reshot footage and overdubbed vocals and such.
I thought it was funny that you mention her makeup but didn't mention her hair! LOL. It's all curly in the long shots but she's got straight bangs with streaks of red and blue on the sides in the closeups.
I was at a fundraiser over the weekend with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They are an order of drag nuns who do charitable works for the GLBT community. They were doing a fashion show called Project Nunway and one of the Sisters walked the runway in this incredible gown decorated with little while birds. At one point she took a bird off of the outfit and stretched out her arms just like Stevie before Edge of Seventeen, then threw it into the crowd. I laughed so hard because all I could think about was Stevie and that bird just sitting there and the look she gives, like "what the hell???" LOL.
If you watch her walking off the stage after the bird incident she demands to have the bird back. Someone gives it to her and it tries to fly away and she practically crushes the poor little thing and I swear she's going "it's MY bird... my bird"

I did notice the hair but it was the makeup that really stood out to me. Long shot, no lipstick. Closeup, lipstick, blusher, etc. I find it quite hilarious.
And I LOVE that bird bit where it doesn't want to fly away. It was probably petrified the poor thing. Will keep an eye out for the 'it's MY bird' scene next time.
I must say one thing I do LOVE about that DVD is the 'Edge walk'... although some of the crazed looks from fans does have me a little scared for Stevie's safety at some points. Haha.

I absolutely love the performance of BATB from this concert - Stevie is clearly struggling to even stand up, but my God, the delivery of the song is totally hypnotizing!

I agree. And the part with "If you know tell her, tell her now!" and then she does that wail and says "tell her now" in this voice as if she's just given up on everything. It's so heart wrenching.
I also love that version of Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You. I don't know if she got mixed up and forgot to come back on time for "So if not for me" at the end or she intentionally let the piano play for a bit before coming in but I think its a really beautiful bit and I wished she had kept that in. It's my favorite version of the song.
But Edge is a hot mess.

Well, I think she WAS a hot mess. I think she's much more grounded now. The closeups in the Tango video were so bad because they were so different from the kind of footage the rest of the band was shot with.

Wonder where that footage for the "reshoots" is stored?
Probably right behind the Buckingham Nicks' master tapes.

Omg. Tango concert is by far the worst. Way worse than Red Rocks. I can't even watch it.

I think they did a great job mixing the vocals. It's incredible how seamless it all is, audiowise. But it should be noted that maybe 50% of the vocals are dubbed over, the other 50% -- the actual vocals from the show --- are still there. "Edge of Seventeen" is a good example. It alternates between the two vocals -- the verses are the original and the chorus is re-recorded. They basically did what they do in the studio for her, take her best vocals from various sessions and cut and paste. Most of the tracks on Bella Donna are cut and paste jobs.

agreed. Red Rocks is a moment in time. Sure, the production has many flaws but you still get the essence of that show. Tango, on the other hand, is a train wreck. Stevie was just starting her 8 year Klonopin stint so I would think she wasn't that bad yet. I'm not sure why they felt the need to do all those dreadful closeups. I don't even mind the closeups, it's the fact that they're slowed down so much that bothers me. On the bright side, she does look beautiful in those shots...

By the mid '80s, concert films were foolishly made to look more like rock videos on MTV than concert films, which defeated the purpose.
Red Rocks and Tango are prime examples. It is rather funny though, that Stevie has different hair and make-up in the close-up shots than the concert footage.
They need to reissue the Red Rocks show on DVD with remastered audio and video - and none of that post-production crap, but just the actual concert.

Yes. I still listen to this on my ipod and get choked up. Absolute favorite version of this song, well- alongside with the one when she looks like she is crying through it? Can't remember which show that was from. Anyway, I've always wondered how much of the Red Rocks BATB vocals are really from the show and not added in because I love it so much. It would suck to find out that it wasn't a genuine live performance from start to finish. Actually, let's not burst my Red Rocks BATB bubble.
My favorite part is the Edge walk too (someone else mentioned that) and the little dance at the end.
