View Full Version : Bob Welch/Fleetwood Mac ignores him

Are you really thru commenting on how Bob was left out of the RRHOF and how Mick Fleetwood and Fleetwood Mac delete all posts about Bob Welch on their sites and also all pics. What gives with this. Are you really going to put up with this. He gave too much of his life and love to that band:shrug::shrug::sorry:

Wendy, I'm so sorry about this. Bob's contributions to Fleetwood Mac on such great records as "Heroes Are Hard To Find" and "Mystery to Me" are sublime. I'm not sure what went down, but it would be great to have Bob recognized somehow.
Did Bob have a positive relationship with Christine McVie? Was she cordial to him? Does Chris have something to do with him being left off the short list for the RRHOF?

I'm not really sure what we are supposed to do. We have all signed the petition, we have been written all over the web that we feel it was an injustice that Bob was left out. Sadly I don't have any influence with either the RRHOF or with any of the members of Fleetwood Mac.
So what is that you want us to do, Wendy? What can I, as a carpet salesman in Australia do to change this situation? Because if I'm correct, probably nothing.

I am not through commenting on it or thinking about it. It upsets me a great deal. Unfortunately, as chriskisn noted, we fans don't have much influence on what the members of Fleetwood Mac do. If they did listen to what fans want, I'm sure a lot of things about the band and the history of Fleetwood Mac would be much different.
Please post here about all of the ways you feel fans can help. You may know of ways to influence that we have not thought about.

I hardly look at the official site, not sure why that is, maybe a lot of reasons, or I expect all comments there to be flattering. I ran into the obit in Mojo for Bob the other day and it seemed quite well written. It had an old quote from Mick Fleetwood about how the group wouldn't have existed today but for him.
The hall of fame was corrupted from the start for me with various non-creative executive nobodies enshrined into it early on, even some of whom really hurt the artists they profited from. I'm surprised if Stan Polley isn't there. I'm glad when people who cared about it were inducted though. I don't know how to communicate with the powers that be for either that hall or this entity that Bob helped to make a continuing concern, not sure there are that many who do. If it's just down to Christine that would be sad as I have always enjoyed her music a lot.
I know of a band that had an album recorded in the late '60s who are still fighting over it and that there are many people who would like to finally hear it, now that's a long time to carry a feud, so there are a lot of illogical nutty stories out there! Sometimes it does get to be impossible to laugh.

We all feel for you and loved Bob's music. I have three of his solo CDs and listen to one of them (The Other One) a lot.
However, I cannot support your attempts to discredit Christine McVie or any other member of Fleetwood Mac either here or on Facebook. We have signed the petition. If there are other constructive things one can do, great. But bashing and blaming members of the band is not one of them.

I don't want to discredit Christine McVie or her talent which cannot be argued. Her voice blended beautifully with Bob's and she is a terrific singer and songwriter.
But she is the reason that Bob is not in the Hall of Fame. Mick told me that the day Bob died when I asked him when he called. He also said the same to my friend Mike Lawson who was on the board of NARAS.
Mick also lied and told me he owned the name Fleetwood Mac and that Bob Would be in the RRHOF. He would see to it. Instead both of them have deleted Bob from all places on their sites as if he never existed. Check out I tunes and Mick's Wickipedia page he wrote and his site. Everytime someone posts on any of their sites that they would like to see Bob in the RRHOF, it is deleted.
May I suggest that there is something you can do. You can post on all FM sites and member sites saying you would like to see his name back where it should be and that you would like to see him in the RRHOF. See if yours gets deleted or not. Then you will know who is diminishing and discrediting:nod: who. I just ask you to do it in a kind and gentlemanly way as Bob would have done.

Wendy, you know I've supported you and having Bob in the RRHOF. I also believe that if it wasn't for Bob having them move to the United States, FM would be a forgotten blues band.
It's sad because Bob and Christine did a lot of work together. She even appears on his solo work after he left FM... and did live stuff with him as well. They really seemed to get along during the 70's. I'm sure the booze and drugs back in the day made for some grand fighting. But bottom line is: He deserves to be there.

It's a good idea to try to post on any of their websites. There are two recent threads (and many older ones) on this site now on the subject and all posts should be in one of those two threads (or the older ones). However, no new threads should be created. There will not be multiple threads on the same topic on this board.

This is the first I've ever heard of Mick owning the Fleetwood Mac name... but I guess it does make sense. Peter Green probably gave his half of the ownership to Mick many decades ago. However, I doubt Mick is the man behind the curtain who is systematically editing Fleetwood Mac history. I have never heard Mick say anything other than gushing things about Bob, and his absolute vital role in Fleetwood Mac history. My guess is Fleetwood Mac's current management or perhaps Warner Bros is at fault for this editing of the Fleetwood Mac story. They probably see more money to be made by "simplifying" Fleetwood Mac, and keeping the focus on the Rumours incarnation of the band. It's all about the almighty dollar, unfortunately.
If Mick has a fault in all of this, I would think it'd be the fact he's just too damned amiable, and wants to please absolutely everyone involved. I have no doubt he'd love to see Bob in the Hall. Undoubtedly, he also understands Christine's point of view on this subject as well. Unfortunately, I think the bottom line is if Christine doesn't want Bob in the Hall of Fame, then that's probably the way it will stay. Mick no doubt is not willing to stir that pot... I know in his heart of hearts, he wants Christine to return to the band, and would do nothing to jeopardize that. I don't think a single member of the band would challenge Christine on this subject, either. I asked John about Bob's omission from the Rock Hall some years ago, and he gave me a noncommital answer. And as another example of political powerplay, it now seems Christine wants to return in a partial capacity to Fleetwood Mac, but Lindsey is the one blocking that. And so it continues, ad nauseum. Fleetwood Mac is an exercise in politics, ego, and power plays.
Regarding Fleetwood Mac/their management/Warner Bros having any ownership/influence on this site, I wish the truth were as exotic as that. :sorry:

Please pray for John Mcvie and his family and friends. I tried to start a new thread, but I just don't know how, but I think he should have his own name up there with Mick, Chris and Steve and Lindsey. Please help me to post it if you know how. I am truly not to good at this. But we all need to discuss how he is doing.

During the lawsuit with Clifford Davis/Adams when he put out the fake FM and the band sued him that is when John and Mick became owners of the name Fleetwood Mac by court order.
Also, so you know Christine is the REAL reason Bob quite Fleetwood Mac. The day after she threw a drink in his face before a gig because he was the only male in the band that she could take her drunken hostilities out on without being hit back.
Just so you know, John was not any worse to Christine than she was to him. She did chase around the Holiday Inn with a butcher knife one night and scared Bob to death.

If you know any Fleetwood Mac songwriters pre 1975, I have spent three years trying to track down royalties previously published by their manager Clifford Davis/Clifford Adams, who wasn't paying Bob. I know who the publishers are. Tell these members or relatives to contact me in a private message on my facebook page - Wendy Welch.1232.
Thank, cause I know they want their money just as Bob and I did. Hope this helps some of the previous songwriters for FM.

Please stop posting such things about Christine. I love Bob's music and appreciated his thoughtful Q and A sessions. In neither of those sessions did he feel the need to share either story you recount above. Neither did Mick in his bio. If indeed either of these stories is true, there must have been reasons they decided not to share them, despite ample opportunity to do so: I suspect such reasons were tied to their respect for her. I wish you would do the same with these second-hand accounts.
I also highly doubt one person and one incident was responsible for Bob's decision to leave in 74.

Bob has written a book in his own words, verifying everything I have said in his words. It will be put out so I don't care what any of you say. It is backed up in his words about Christine, Mick and John and numerous witnesses. So don't even think about disputing me! I have no reason to diss anybody, it's just time you knew the truth.

What are the odds that John and Christine both chased each other around with butcher knives? That's a lot of cleaving for one family.
Aside from throwing the drink at Lindsey, we see Christine throw a drink at Mick too on video, but she is playing with him and he dared her. We often joke about Christine throwing drinks on this board. Once a person has a reputation for doing something even once, you can easily just add on an incident to the legacy like a "me too" thing.

It was Christine, not John with the butcher knife. She may have thrown a drink in Lindseys face as well, but she certainly did the same to Bob the day before he quit. And it will be in the book in his own words. I don't like arguin with fans, but I do know all the stories that Bob had typed up and that he told me over and over. I'm not arguing with you one way or another. I would love to see you publish Bob's book and then we'll all judge its content ourselves, as to what we believe, what we don't, what we question, and what resolves questions we've long had. We may come to conclusions that are correct or incorrect, but it's going to be a subjective thing on a person by person basis. Our standards for credibility all differ.
Either way, I think editing and publishing that book is one of the best things you can do to carry on his memory. I think that will make a greater mark than the RRHOF, when all is said and done.

I think we could accept the truth if it comes out in an edited book that we know were Bob's words. What is offensive to me is the way in which you are using these past stories as a weapon against Christine and, to a lesser extent, John and Mick, because Bob was slighted in the RRHOF. That was unfortunate. I would have Loved to have seen him on the stage with them that memorable evening! We all know he deserved it.
But your posts about such things he would have saved for his book seem in bad taste and are being used in a way he did not intend. If he had, he would have shared them with the fans already. So, once again, please stop these malicious posts.

You could have seen Bob on stage, if Christine hadn't refused to go on stage if Bob was inducted, as per Mick Fleetwood to me and Mick Lawson the day Bob died. Bob was working on the book and intended to share it with the fans, but he died. I will make sure it happens before I die,. Why do you think I am working so hard to tell the truth -- to hurt anyone, to help myself, or to tell Bob's story?

After 27 years of marriage, being together 24/7 the entire time, except for 1 month give or take 3 days, I think I know better than anybody what Bob intended and how he felt. I was his wife, his best friend, his manager , and we were the love of each others lives. I am doing all of this for Bob, it certainly doesn't benefit me to be disliked by you or anyone else that is in denial and doesn't want to know the truth. Bob loved his fans and he loved the members of FM, but he wanted the truth told. And I must ay that the truth is never in bad taste, it's just those that don't want to know the truth that are in denial. I am doing this to let you all know the real truth why Bob was not instated in the Rock Hall of Fame. The RRHOF picks the band and the owners of the name and members pick who is inducted. By the way, I don't think I have ever slighted John McVie.

I am one fan who is really looking forward to this book. So far I have enjoyed all your posts. You are refreshingly honest which is such a rare trait these days. I am very sorry for the loss of your husband. The love of my life committed suicide in 1998 so I know exactly how you feel and what you are going through.
Christine is the one member of FM who all the fans seem to collectively enjoy. It's almost laughable how certain fans put down Lindsey, Mick and Stevie but no one is able to say one bad thing about Chris. Then the entire community jumps on them. I have love and admiration for all the members of FM, but I won't throw stones at anyone who expresses a negative opinion about ones they don't like.

I look forward to that book, too. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And I'd relish the stories Bob tells because they were stories he wanted to tell. Not out of revenge for having been wronged.
And , Vivfox, for what it's worth, I have often felt uncomfortable by some of the things people have written about Stevie, too. Maybe it's a cultural cliche that I am more sensitive to a woman's privacy than a man's. Not sure. But definitely some of the comments about Stevie, particularly in regards to her sexlife and drug use, have made me recoil a bit.

Thank you all for being supportive to me. I truly am not coming from a place to harm anyone. You just all need to realize these are all people that are human and with a past just like you and I are. I am an open book, and could never take the amazing talent and what Fleetwood Mac has given away from the world. I just want to be honest and real, and try to keep up Bob Welch's legacy as he truly deserves. He was the best person I have ever had the privilege of knowing and I know what all he told me and has written is the truth -- not meant to hurt anyone, just to tell the truth to the fans. There is nothing harmful in anything he has said to me or in his book. He truly loved them all. But they are real people just like us. Don't forget that. They are icons, but shouldnot be put on a pedastal as Gods.

Surely you are not suggesting that Christine throwing a drink in Bob's face was the sole reason he quit the band. Maybe the last straw in an already tense and frustrating situation happening within the band at the time. I understand Bob quit because he wasn't happy with the lack of success they were having and in particular the situation with their manager and the faux Fleetwood Mac. You know, the litigation and all the other bull**** that was going on at the time.
If Bob and Christine didn't get along why on earth would she have collaborated with him on his succesful solo albums in the 70s. Hell, I believe that Mick, Stevie, and Lindsey even leant their support in his solo endeavors. I think about times when I saw them on stage with him like in Bob Welch and Friends at The Roxy(1982). By the way I love that whole show and "Sentimental Lady" is definitely a favorite of mine.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/cjH84W_-V1c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Which leads me to believe that the real reason Bob and the rest of the band had a falling out was the royalties fight that happened after this time. Not really sure of what happened there and why it particularly affected Chris more than it did Mick and John.

You are so wrong. Much will come out later. But you know NOTHING! about Bob and Christine's relationship. Mick was managing Bob and Chris did it for Mick as far as the Roxy show was concerned, but not his solo albums with Captol. Mick did not manage him at the time of his hits. Other than that you will have to wait for the book, but you were not there. It had nothing to do with the lawsuit with Clifford Davis or anything else, as far as Bob quitting the band. It had everything to do with personalities. But as I said, you only know what Bob said so politely to the press, but not the real truth. Quit trying to act like you were there or in the know, none of you know anything but the falsehoods that you read in the press. As it should be until the time is right to tell the whole truth. Christine was more vicious than you can ever imagine, nor than Bob or I could. We were both shocked at her actions over the RRHOF. By the way, Christine never collaberated with him nor did Mick, Stevie or Lindsey. Lindsey produced one song and Chris sang backup on one song. Mick had nothing to do with his solo albums with Capitol. So you are quite misinformed. No collaberation, just paid to sing and produce, big payments to them, I might add and royalties. They contributed nothing to the songwriting or lead vocals or guitars, etc. Lindsey is an incredible producer who I totally admire for all of his talents. I will say no more.

Thank you so much for explaining yourself. I have had to stand up to these statements ffor a long time and I must admit I overreacted, but it is so hard to accept the "no flies on me" Christine that everyone seems to think they know . It is just so not true and really sets me off. No collaberation, just paid to sing and produce, big payments to them, I might add and royalties. They contributed nothing to the songwriting or lead vocals or guitars, etc. Lindsey is an incredible producer who I totally admire for all of his talents. I will say no more.
I used the word collaborate loosely. Maybe I should have said 'worked with'. Sorry. ;)

And I too know that you're frustrated, Wendy. Trying to right the wrongs....
You know, Bob and Christine are my all time favorite members of FM. And I've believed every word you've said about Christine. It was heartbreaking for me to read, but I(unfortunately) believe it all.
We do hold these people up on a pedestal, hoping that they're saints. And of course they're not. They have as many faults as us common people. It's easy to forget that sometimes.
I'm not sure that I believe in actual justice happening, these days, but if it still exists, Bob will be inducted. Because it's the ONLY right thing to do. And we all know that.

Mick was managing Bob and Chris did it for Mick as far as the Roxy show was concerned, but not his solo albums with Captol.

If this is true, and I don't have reason to doubt it,
why would Bob want or allow Christine to
be involved at all on any of his projects?

Mick, Christine, and Lindsey all played on “Sentimental Lady,” with Lindsey and Christine providing backing vocals. In fact, I think Bob only played bass and sang lead vocals on that song. (The guitar playing is unquestionably Lindsey Buckingham.)
The others made contributions to “Three Hearts” as well. Mick played on “The Ghost of Flight 401,” Christine played and sang on “Come Softly to Me” and “Don’t Wait Too Long,” and Stevie sang on “Devil Wind.”
Also, Mick and Stevie periodically made cameos at Bob’s shows. Even John McVie made a cameo with Bob in Japan when McVie was playing with Mayall.

Thank you so much for explaining yourself. I have had to stand up to these statements ffor a long time and I must admit I overreacted, but it is so hard to accept the "no flies on me" Christine that everyone seems to think they know . It is just so not true and really sets me off. I apologize if I went off, but I do admit that this stuff just breaks my heart because I know how terribly Bob was treated by her before and after his death.
Funnily, my perception of Christine was never that she was "perfect" so to speak. I never had her on a pedestal or thought she was faultless. In fact, I embraced her faults. The things I admire about her never called for her to be kind or good. So, if I believed that she kept Bob Welch out of the RRHOF that would not change my view of her at all.
I urge you to get Bob's story out there in full, in context. So, we can read all of his thoughts, the ones that you've disclosed and others, together. Even if you can't get a publisher (or maybe you already have one), you can sell directly to fans and I think the initial interest that is sparked among the fan community would encourage a publisher to buy it. I know with Amazon publishing out there now and the other alternatives, sometimes authors can generate as much buzz on their own as they could if they had a book deal.
You could even try a kickstarter. I would certainly contribute.

But I always wanted to believe that she was kind and good.
But I always embraced her bad habits...the smoking(even though I hate smoking), but especially the fact she was never photographed without a drink in her hand. God, I loved that about her.

Oh, I never thought that or wanted to think that. I never got that vibe from her. I mean except with her dogs. I thought she was kind and good to them. Other than that, I just thought she didn't suffer fools gladly or at all. Never doubted she could go after those she thought had wronged her with a vengeance. Though I know that she, like anyone else, could be wrong about her opinions on whether she'd actually been crossed or not.
That's the thing. We all see the "truth" differently and that's why there are juries, to look at the credibility on both sides and come to an objective determination of what's true or not, to the best of their ability. Everyone has justifications for their bad behavior or I guess they don't see it as bad at all. Everyone thinks they were provoked into doing what they did. As an FM fan, I love to hear everyone's conflicting stories and get a big picture of things. The more info we have, the more illuminating. I mean, even if you don't believe something, it's always fun to know the perceptions that people like to have out there of themselves, because that gives you a lot of insight in and of itself.
But I always embraced her bad habits...the smoking(even though I hate smoking), but especially the fact she was never photographed without a drink in her hand. God, I loved that about her.
LOL. I have noticed that many fans like instances where the band members drink or curse or smoke (cigarettes or pot) and that makes me laugh. I don't know why people like that. I mean, I don't have anything against it. It doesn't make me uptight or disapproving. But it doesn't titillate me either.

Lindsey produced Sentimental Lady , but was not paid to play guitar on it. He may have played a few riffs, but please know Bob played guitar on Sentimental Lady unquestionably. And the others sang some backup, very little, I might add.
Also, the book does have a publisher, but I can't work on it until I close probate and straighten my affairs after the first of the year. But it will cover quite a lot, in Bob's words and those who were there. It will tell a story of how powerful and greedy people can take away history and the entire legacy of someone who truly earned that place in history. This book will be more than you every imagined. I will die making this happen if it is necessary. I will always love Bob Welch with all my heart and know how much he gave to the music world, without the help of anyone, although you may think otherwise.
For the rest of Bob's fans, I appreciate and love you for all the support you have given me. And for those who disagree, you just give me more strength to make Bob's true legacy known to the public and dispute all of your disagreements with me and inability to accept the truth. It will be told and I will not be sued for the truth!

Also you should know that NOW I don't believe that FM will ever see to it that Bob is inducted in the RRHOF. I think they have made their statement very clear by trying to remove him from their history. I truly saddens me. It could be done by Mick and Christine and John. The RRHOF is not responsible. As I have said before they pick the band and the band picks who is inducted. Mick told me over a year ago "I own the name, and it is not a matter of if, but when" regarding Bob in the HHROF. But that was before he needed Christine back in the bad. He was calling me every week and emailing me and now I receive nothing. I was very patient for over a year, and then realized I was just being shined on by Mick. He doesn't care about Bob, just his own pocketbook.
And that is what I truly believe and all of his past interactions with other members show that.

You might also like to know that Bob did many firsts with his successful album French Kiss and his hits. He invited FM to join him with his success to help them with their publicity, not the other way around. Bob Welch and Friends was the first televised special on MTV, not FM and friends. It is also illegally being sold along with Bob Welch and the Roxy and we have never been paid a dime for it. I have tried to track it thru many countries to get paid for this bootleg. There was an inhouse memo that neither could even be played outside of a video disc that belonged to Bob Welch or on MTV as an audio only, yet it is everywhere. Who's getting the money? I would love to know because Bob never got anything from the cd's. Also he hosted his own TV show, Hollywood Heartbeat, which had nothing to do with FM and it was quite successful for those of you in the know after his first solo album with Capitol.

The intro and the solo are absolutely Lindsey, as are all of the acoustic parts. Bob said as much over the years, and my ears agree with that. He said in one of the Q&As that Mick told him that "Sentimental Lady" is what it would have sounded like if he hadn't left the band.
To acknowledge the presence of the others does not tarnish Bob's legacy.

Bob seemed like such a nice guy. Someone you could probably have a good conversation with on just about any topic. I wish I could have met him!
I too think it is unfair that Bob was not inducted into the RRHOF. All his time spent with FM should be acknowledged. He was an influencial member and helped to bring about change within the band!
The only thing I can say is; be persistent!
Get another petition going that we can all sign. Get the word out there. Never give up!
Also,I can't wait to read the book! I hope it get's published soon. :)
Wendy, do you know if the 2 lps that Bob did with the band Paris, were released on cd in the states?
I'm curious about this as well. I hope they get released so I can own copies of them!

Good Gosh! Wendy sure gives the impression that Chris McVie was a tyrant! I did some checking into Bob's feelings on the band. I took another look at his interview with THE PENGUIN (which I'm sure you've all read). This is one of the most candid interviews I've read from Bob. Check it out. Here's a small excerpt:
The "vibeyness" of Mick, John and Chris, all three together, would affect anybody who was in FM...This would be totally separate and apart from any problems that Stevie and Lindsey, for example, were having between themselves as a "couple". Don't forget too, a band is not just a group of friends, but also a business, like a sports team with a specific purpose, so there are PROFESSIONAL jealousies and frictions also.
It's my understanding that Stevie and Lindsey were just on a small "retainer" for a trial period when they first joined FM. Mick, John and Chris at that point had the power to "hire and fire" them. As it became obvious through touring, that Stevie and Lindsey were the real "stars" of the reformed band, I'm sure the 'powertripping" got REAL thick. Stevie, from the very first drew enormous attention and got huge press coverage......she was a natural star. Christine, who had a habit of sarcastically "sniping" at ME when she thought I was trying to "ham it up" on stage, REALLY must have given Stevie some s--t for her "melodramatic" stage antics. Yet these same "antics", and the smoky tension between Stevie and Lindsey was what was helping the band get over big time. Christine, although she had more hit singles than Stevie and Lindsey, got far less attention. People also made fun of Stevie for the very things that were so attractive about her as a performer. Stevie was very "gushing" on stage, exactly the opposite from the much more reserved and ('scuse me) "constipated" English members. The "English members" were also always "pulling rank" on the "new" members, constantly subtly reminding them that THEY were the "original" Fleetwood Mac, THEY knew what Fleetwood Mac was all about, THEY would have final say as to what music got kept etc etc.
So Carol, I think that all of this is what Stevie means when she says her "life was made miserable"....Even after all this time, Mick, John and Chris STILL have EMOTIONAL control over the band. THEY are the true "prima donnas", NOT Stevie or Lindsey in my opinion...
As far as "fun", even in prison, you occasionally have "fun", and of course there were fun times in the S&L band... but the OVERALL vibe was..... miserable and......TENSE. And IN-tense...
Carol, I probably have a ton of "Stevie' stories, but lemme save SOMETHING for my book ! ;-)

Well, I certainly believe Bob regarding his experience in Fleetwood Mac. There is no reason not to.
However, nothing I've ever heard or read would lend me to believe that his experience was the experience that Stevie and Lindsey also had, so I find that whole quote from him is strange, in context. Lindsey and Stevie may have been hired help at first, but Stevie herself has said that if Christine ever thought anything she did on stage was over the top or silly, she never let on. She was probably thinking it, but Stevie never knew. I'm also not sure I would ever describe Mick Fleetwood as reserved.

I know for a fact, that Lindsey came to Bob right after he joined and asked him "how could you stand these people". Bob advised him to stick with the band when he said he wanted to leave and couldn't take it, and Bob told him he would do well, which Lindsey did. There will be more about that in the future book.

Nothing personal to you WildHearted but I have read many things that lead me to believe Stevie and Lindsey went through similar ordeals with the British triumvirate. I just think they have chosen to keep quite about it, as continuing members of the band. As far as the inner workings of the band, it doesn't matter if it's about the making of Rumours, Tusk, Say You Will, or the EP, fans assume every comment about band infighting is Stevie and Lindsey not getting along. Yeah, they even like to fan those flames themselves, but every comment Stevie has ever made about being put down or not being given much respect as an equal member of the band wasn't always a direct reference to Lindsey mistreating her or not respecting her work. She hasn't always specified who did what when. She's too smart for that. Sure she has said some things about Lindsey's misdeeds, but even when she hasn't named names, he is the one everyone assumes mistreated her during most of her career in Fleetwood Mac. I know that's not true. I can read what people like Bob have said and make different assumptions. I'm not saying your perceptions are wrong, just that fans can come to different conclusions drawing inferences from other's comments, rather than taking every word the bandmembers say as the only view. I don't give Chris a pass just because she has chosen to speak less than the others except John. It gives her a more neutral appearing character than the more colorful Buckingham and Nicks, but I wouldn't put it past her to be as jealous, spiteful, and egotistical as everyone thinks they are. They wear it well, but on Chris it seems like a bad fit to the fans who have read very little about her bad side. Wendy, I am really looking forward to Bob's unique perspective. He has both an insider and outsider view that needs to be shared. I hope you publish his book as soon as you can. God Bless you on your loss.

I can't believe that this would be news to anyone! Christine gives that impression herself. It's so obvious if you listen to her carefully. It really blows my mind that on this site, she is considered a Saint with no human shortcomings whatesoever. And I do not believe for a minute any of the public excuses as to why she left the band. "Read between her lines" and it's obvious that she was sick of the whole Lindsey/Stevie dynamic (and actually, I can't blame her for that, that has to be a lot to deal with), plus Stevie's back-up singers' (aka her "clique") being involved. It's not that I don't like her, it's just that I don't look at anyone in the band through rose-colored glasses. They are all human, including the perfect Ms. Perfect.

Maybe initially. There are two sides to that coin, though. The Brits had every right to pull rank.
Why Stevie and Lindsey worked well with the Brits I suspect is that they had that same sense of grandiosity, that sense of being on a "mystical quest...or appointment to Her Majesty" that the Brits had, to quote Bob. Also, they had each other for a little while. Like with any new situation, they needed time to adjust to each other.

Yeah, because it's not like she hadn't already publicly retired from the road in 1990 or made it clear in her lyrics that "Time" was going to be her swansong with Fleetwood Mac in 1995.
If anything, I just took her departure in 1998 as wanting to go out on top.

Maybe initially.
Certainly, after the White album. As Stevie says they had never made that much money before and I'm sure the Brits were letting them know, "if you want this good thing to continue, you better stay in line."
But by the time Rumours hit, I don't think they were pushing Lindsey and Stevie around. Well, they were pushing Stevie, but not threatening her with being fired.
That's how Lindsey was able to get Tusk, because they valued him so much and they knew that he knew it. As for Stevie by then they knew she was a concert draw and that her songs were hits, so they valued her too, but she has said that they treated her like the little sister and I think that's true. They were always telling her to be quiet and stop pestering them, so to speak. I mean, that's how she ended up in Sly's bedroom, more than likely. Someone probably said to her, "oh my goodness! Can't you just go somewhere and be quiet for like 10 minutes." I don't think anyone here ever thought that Christine didn't boss Stevie around just like everyone else. We've seen and heard her do it. So, it's no surprise it was going on when there was no recording or video as well.
Actually, I don't think most people think of Christine as perfect because she is an angel or saint. I think they think she is perfect, because she jams with the guys, sings like a starling, has a sarcastic sense of humor and a brusque streak. In most cases, she's not loved because she's good, she's loved because she's BAD. I don't think anyone ever thought she wasn't a drunk given to throwing drinks in peoples' faces back then. It's part of her legend.
As for Stevie, when she found her solo success, she enjoyed the power she had over all of them. That's why she said things like they were all like nervous cats on a hot tin roof, scared that her solo career would jeopardize FM. Even though she had FM hits from the very beginning, until Bella Donna came out, I don't think she or the rest of the band realized she could make it without FM.

I have never thought of Christine McVie as a saint or an angel. I believe part of her appeal to me was that she found a niche in FM during all of the incarnations.
I remember her saying she would get a bit cheesed that Stevie got most of the attention at first. But then she admitted that it helped her find her role in the band. Afterward, she admitted she wouldn't really want that much attention anyway.
Musically, I think she is very complimentary to most of the musicians she'd ever played with. She has a fantastically unique voice and a very quirky key style.
I think she was a bit more uppity than even Stevie was perceived to be. But then again, so was Bette Davis.

Well, at least as far as their Halloween costumes, that was 35 years ago, and should be taken with a grain of salt. Everything was about 25% as PC as it is now.
I know. I was just making a joke.

I'm curious about this as well. I hope they get released so I can own copies of them!
At the moment, I have to watch videos so I can listen to the songs. It's frustrating!
Vinyl copies are hard to come by and I don't have a turntable. :(
I'm in the same boat. I'll settle for cassette copies, but I'd prefer something that I'm more familiar with.

There is no U.S. vs. England as the British members moved to California with encouragement from Bob well before crossing paths with Buckingham-Nicks, but whatever...
Why do some go to simplistic extremes of someone being either a saint or a demon? It seems that way with the current president and all, and that sort of thinking is getting pretty tired.

Nobody is a saint and nobody is a demon. We all have a bit of both in us. Good people have done bad things, and bad people have done some good things.

I'm admittedly not a huge Chris fanatic (I enjoy her tunes and her role within the band but I have never been one to read up on the entire history of her personal life, etc) so none of my comments are in any way influenced by some burning desire on my part to paint her as a saint. I dont think she was one (nor anyone else in the band). Chris has never seemed cuddly to me, although that is obviously just a perception I've gathered from watching her in interviews and seeing her type of dry humor. In truth, although I love her presence in FM, I have no strong feelings regarding Christine as a person one way or another.
So no, my comments re: Bob attributing his experience in FM as being the same experience SnL had in FM have absolutely nothing to do with somehow backing up my own opinion of Chris on the "absence" of complaints. Stevie's complained plenty about being treated like a child, and I don't think Lindsey was all that thrilled to be on FM in the beginning in general. He certainly wasn't thrilled about John and Mick having him play the LP or play with a pick. I believe that they all three had a vision of what FM was and should be and that it wasn't just "hey Stevie, hey Linds, y'all take over now," from the get go.
However, my comment was responding to Bob's assumumption that Chris would have gotten on to Stevie about her on stage antics. Stevie has specifically stated that she never did, although she probably thought she was nuts. According to Stevie, she never laughed in her face at her twirling or told her to cool it with the melodrama. That's not an opinion based on the absence of a comlaint by Stevie. It's based on what she actually said about that particular situation.
I would be shocked if it was all sunshine and roses, but I just personally don't think it's fair to make a blanket generalization about people and their personalities and use that to inform every thought you have of them from there on out with no considerations. The thing about personality is that it's all very relative to the person you are interacting with. Dynamics within groups change as the members of the group change.

And none of my comments stem from any desire not to accept "the truth" about Christine. I don't care to whom she was mean.
I remember looking at her very awkwardly accepting those gifts in Japan and I thought to myself, "Wow. That's not a woman I'd approach if I was ever in the vicinity." I don't like her any less as an entertainer, just because I think she might be a prickly human being.
And I don't care what Mick did to anyone either. I always think he's doing something anyway. Right about now, I hope he's doing everything he can to get Christine back in the band, so hopefully his scoundrel ways are working on my behalf.
Go Mick!

The Paris albums were released on CD in Japan. You can find them on eBay, but they'll cost you.

The truth about Christine leaving the band is none of the above. She never liked touring as per Bob and didn't want to move to the US and go on with FM. Mick talked her into it, but by the time she finally left the band, it was because she simply did not want to tour anymore, no more, no less.
