View Full Version : The Guilty Pleasures Thread.
So, um, yeah, I just bought tickets to see Sarah Brightman in Calgary later this month.
And I feel awesome about it.
And that is so, so wrong in so many ways.
Also I find smokers kinda sexy.
So here's the place to talk about the things you love that your ideal self knows you probably shouldn't. Anyone have anything? Grape soda? Avril Lavigne? Fisting? It all goes down here. Maybe there's some kindred spirits among us.

I had to youtube that to see who you meant. Good choice!
But yes, mum's the word and all that. Maybe we should write everything in this thread in smaller text to indicate secrecy and shame?
I think I'm going to learn a lot from this thread about things that I shouldn't like but probably will. :) Highly educational.

The Nickelodeon show "Victorious."
I'm a sucker for singing and dancing, what can I say.

The closest thing I've got to a person's idea of guilty pleasure (which in my case, is not a guilty pleasure at all. hell, my username is from that show) is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I'm shameless with my pleasures, for the most part, so it's hard for me to think of one.

LOL.... dying of laughter!!!! Secrecy and shame!!
When you youtubed him, what song did you watch? Just wondering which song made you decide he was a good choice!
This was a great idea for a thread! I can't wait to see what others respond with.

 I sort of meant "good choice" for this thread. Rather than just "Oh excellent!" But I did find the song perfectly pleasant. Sweet and cheesy, which fits this thread to a tee. I can't remember which song it actually was though.

The thing about MLP, which I admittedly cannot understand the hype over, is that it's basically a decent show. There isn't anything to criticise there. It may seem like a strange choice to some, and admittedly I don't "get it", but I don't think you need to feel guilty about it. Wheras Sarah Brightman, on my part, has much criticism thrown at her which I happen to agree with, and yet I like her in spite of that.
Also, even after reading your discussion of MLP in another thread, I never put it together with your username. That's how obtuse I am. ;) Good to know!

Eww, really? I'm opened minded to so many things, but I think smoking is the most disgusting thing anyone can do. You might as well drop trou, and take a poop in the middle of the room, because I find them equally repulsive!

Well I imagine there's probably someone in the wide world of ours that would find that kinda sexy too.
Perhaps even on this very forum. Watch this space and see, I guess! ;)

Maybe because I know people who are guilty of enjoying it. A lot of the things I'm passionate about started as "guilty pleasures". The whole Buckingham Perfect thing being one of them, plus a few other pairings from many shows I watch. Now I just partake in everything guilt free.
Okay, except one pleasure of mine: reading blind items.

We try not to eat processed or artificial foods but every now and again I need some M&Ms. I love them.
Usually twice a year, Christmas and birthday, we order English treats we miss and can't find locally. I always get Walkers Thai Chilli crisps--my favourite junk food. Eating twice a year or so keeps it special and so I am almost glad they are not in every US shop.
When home alone I often blast the 'cheesy' 70s and 80s music--makes household chores more fun. Or, I like a bit of classic telly-esp if ill and needing a comfort.
I do have John Denvers greatest hits--he was fabulous! And, Sarah b is an amazing talent-will be a wonderful show!

That was enormously confusing, actually! But I wiki'd and now I get the idea. ;)

I love this whole post. Your positivity is infectious as always, jennifer. As an expat I can relate to missing certain snack foods. It seems these days like the biggest difference between western nations is the junk food available, and that's what people miss most! We're going back to Canada next week and my husband and I are most excited about eating at Wendy's. Classy stuff, huh?
I don't think I've ever seen Walker's Thai Chilli crisps though? Or are they those upmarket "sensation" ones which I tend to ignore at the supermarket? The world of crisps is a vast one!

They are one of those posh Sensations and so divine! We also import cheese & onion but I don't 'have to have' those!
We knew many Americans in London who missed Wendys. Funnily enough we met a franchise owner here who opened several UK Wendys in the 80s or 90s and most closed...because Brits didn't like square shaped burgers. True story and made me laugh. We are in Columbus ohio, which is Wendy's HQ so Wendy's is serious business round here!
Your Wendy's story has been confirmed by co-workers of mine! I don't get how square burgers could've been such a dealbreaker for people but that is indeed what people have told me as well. It just makes no sense to me that Burger King and McDonald's could've had such triumphant success here when they just don't cut the mustard compared to Wendy's. The world of big business is a mystery to me. But like you, I'd probably be far less excited by Wendy's if it was available to me all the time. It's all part of the mystique for me, now. ;)
I shall have to keep an eye out for those thai chili crisps next time I'm in the store! But I'm a roast chicken man most of the time.

woohoo, Jennifer! So happy to read you have JD's Greatest hits and that I'm not the only one! I like a lot of the cheesey 70's Top Forty songs.
Your comment about classic tv made me think of another guilty pleasure; our local PBS station here in the US sometimes plays an old British tv show called "Keeping Up Appearances". I love it! Sometimes I feel like I can't breathe from laughing so hard! Definitely another guilty pleasure of mine!

I like Wendy's too.
I think their fries are fantastically better than McDonald's, however not as good as a local franchise that we have around here (E.TN) known as Pal's Sudden Service.
My guilty pleasures would have to include:
-Loving certain top 40 hits on the radio right now "Roar", "American Girl" and Macklemore material.
-I am not ashamed to say that I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan
-I love Jenna Marbles videos
-Finally I have this weird obsession with collecting lipsticks. So far there's this huge bag of 50 tubes of chilled lipstick in my parents' garage fridge. I'm not much of an eye makeup person (really uncoordinated in that department) so I focus on my lips.

!!!!!!! Love Sailor Moon. Well, haven't watched in years actually, but think of very fondly. I took that show vureh srsleh throughout my adolescence. These days it's a bit too.... heightened, for my taste. But I still have much affection for it. And am enormously excited for the new series which is released worldwide this winter.
Loving all the Wendy's love! :) We are a healthy bunch, aren't we?

Mmm, Wendy's *drool*
I'm craving the Frosty now.
Chessy 80s music is the best. Speaking of, I was blasting Flashdance (What a Feeling) yesterday on the way to practice
Idk is having multiple celeb crushes on men 30-45 years older than me (Mr. Buckingham I'm looking at you.) a guilty pleasure or an odd preference? ;)

I wouldn't even call it an odd preference! I have little crushes on men 30-45 years older than me from all walks of life. One who works at the local shop, one the lead guitarist of Fleetwood Mac. I don't discriminate, I just like.
Re: Wendy's. I don't think I've attempted to eat anything other than their Spicy Chicken Fillet since I was about 12. I am seemingly totally devoted to that particular dish. Perhaps it's time I branch out a bit. The world of Frosties is a total mystery to me.

I'm utterly embarrassed to admit this, but when I don't feel well or when it's really cold outside, I still occasionally want my favorite childhood comfort meal: Chef Boyardee ABC's & 123's & a corn dog. :o And no, I don't dare read the ingredient labels... ignorance is bliss!

I don't feel so bad for loving canned tamales and cheez-its now.
I still love John Denver music too! He wrote some beautiful sensitizing stuff that also evokes the wood panelled lava candle '70s for me as much as certain Fleetwood Mac albums can.

When I'm sick, and I mean sick sick, my own personal wondercure is vanilla ice cream, with Welch's concentrated grape juice poured all over it. A couple of bowls of that, and I can cure anything. I swear to god. Cure anything. It repairs my body.

I enjoy both of those things, but the thought of combining juice and ice cream makes my head explode slightly. I'm just not sure.
Still, I like a root beer float now and again, so I suppose it can't be too different.
I'm embarassed to admit that I've never had a corn dog. Louie, is it something you'd recommend? Or would you advise me to stay away and not open that can of worms?

I swear, I'll drag my 104 temp body thru the grocery store, just to get those two things. Put myself back in bed with a big bowl of it, and I'm always better the next day. It's my own cure!
Corn dogs.....as a kid, I HATED them(I was a picky kid). I will eat anything now, but there's still some remaining prejudice against them.

Ha- try working there. I've worked there for two years, and we got sick of regular frostys, so last shift we mixed in mashed banana, peanut butter, and chocolate syrup. And we keep a secret book of crew member recipes hidden above a ceiling tile in the break room.

I don't feel guilty but I tend to not tell people I enjoy certain tiny tots tv shows... let's see, there is Pingu, Button Moon, The Mole Sisters, Shaun The Sheep, Yo Gabba Gabba, Nanalan' and even Bear In The Big Blue House (with a really loud NY accented blue mouse). Maybe I'm a sad victim of premature brain collapse but I find very simple stories with claymation or puppet characters entertaining. :o

Although it isn't exactly what one would consider "brain food", I have always had a penchant for cookery and home design shows. Programs like Homes Under The Hammer, Masterchef, Escape To The Country and good ol' Delia always make for a good rainy day inside.
My biggest "guilty pleasure" though, I believe is Roleplay. Not in the "Naughty Nurses"/"Safeword" kind of way, but I enjoy creating characters and interacting with those of people from all over the world, creating scenarios and losing myself in fantasy.

OK. I'm a bit of a film buff and my taste in movies is somewhat high brow. But having said that... I absolutely ADORE the Fast & Furious movies - something a lot of people find surprising about me. Especially the ones directed by Justin Lin. I own them all on Blu-Ray and I'm REALLY into them. I guess you could call that a guilty pleasure.
Also even though I'm nearly 36 I STILL buy 2000AD every week and Judge Dredd Megazine every month. I've got ten of the Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files books and I LOVED the Dredd movie with Karl Urban (not too keen on the Stallone one)...
and BOY do I dig a Stephen King book!
Are those guilty pleasures?
